Another delay, another day gone.

We're just a few days
from Tim and Valerie

moving back in.

(Nikki): What a difference!
Huge difference!

- Oh, Randy,
it's absolutely beautiful.

(upbeat folk music)

(Randy): I'm Randy Spracklin,

third generation builder,

proud Newfoundlander.

My team and I are building
on a giant cliff

in the Atlantic Ocean.

They don't call it
a rock for nothing!

We fight the elements year-roud

to get the job done.

It might be tough for some,
but not for us.

Because when this is your view,
it's worth it.

(upbeat music)

- The weather's warmed up now,

and everyone is getting outside.

Plus, they all want
their projects done.

I'm heading to a new job,

it's the Neils' house,
right on the bay.

This is an iconic house
in Newfoundland.

It's a saltbox house,
and the most photographed

in Brigus.

And we got a little
project we gotta do.

Actually, we got two.

So this is project number one.

As you can see, the concrete
is kinda decaying.

This concrete
is about 40 years old,

and next to the salt water,
and the salt air,

it's kind of doing
its number on the concrete.

So, the homeowner wants
to make it look nice and pretty

and a little bit more,

you know, structurally sound,

so we'll end up pouring
a new face

right over this old concrete.

It'll look like brand new.

This ain't the toughest part.

This is project one.

Number two is down by the water,

and that's gonna be
the real tricky one.

The new project
is trying to fix this dock.

We had a big storm this winter.

This was the biggest storm
I ever seen in my lifetime.

The wind was gusting 160.

There was a lot of damage.

It shut us down
for about a week.

And the waves came in,
and actually

took this piece of concrete,

and put it out in the ocean.

So, if you look down,

the existing piece
is down there.

So now we gotta try to fix it.

Getting concrete down here
is a big ordeal.

We got no steps,
there's no ramps,

there's no nothin',
just a wall of concrete

and a house.

That's gonna be
the tricky obstacle.

And this crack is pretty low.

Looks like we're gonna need
a boat for this job,

and it's gonna be tangly,

because the tides goes
in and out.

Hard working on that one.

We're putting Nikki
in the boat. She's the rookie.

Plus, you know,
she's out fishing all the time.

She got her sea legs.

(upbeat folk music)

I gotta figure out a lot
on this one

before we get started.

Plus, we have a lot
of other jobs on the go.

Down in the bay, we got
the 150-year-old Gushue home.

The two-story lighthouse
inspired addition

is all done. The deck is on,

and we only got two weeks
to get Tim and Valerie

back in their house.

Across town, me and my dad

are building my mom's
new house,

and that massive storm
shut us down.

Now that spring is here,

we're trying to get
back on track.

And up on the hill
looking over Brigus,

the Mitchells' residence
is coming along.

The two additions are built,

and the doors and windows
are installed.

Inside, the walls are down,

creating a big open layout.

Next on the list is that change
that Dave sprung on me

when I last saw him.

- So, the fireplace itself
will be changed too,

the actual unit.

- Okay, so that's a change. See?

- Listen. You're a contractor.
You love changes.

- I just love changes. What?
(laughing)

This is one of these projects

that keeps growing.

So, Paul and Harv
are here to help

with the latest change.

Yeah, so we're gonna take down

the rock on the fireplace.

It's gonna be a hell of a job
because that's like

two-inch-thick stone.

Now that the dividing walls
have come down

to create
the open-concept space,

Dave wants everything
to blend together,

so that old fireplace has to g.

Let's see if we can
beat this up.

- See if we get it down.

(upbeat music)

- Holy (bleep)!

Whoever put it on,
put it on pretty good.

- Yeah.

- It's on there pretty solid,

but it seems like the pry bar
is doing the job,

so we'll get a bigger crowbar
there now,

and start putting something
in behind it

and pry it off that way.

- I've been in this industry
20 years.

Randy's a good guy,
but, eh, he's particular.

He likes stuff done right,

which I like, 'cause I like
stuff done right too.

Paul is easy to work with.

There's nothing
he doesn't know.

He knows his (bleep).

There's no other way to put it.

(Randy): Easy!

That fireplace was supposed
to stay. It's a wood burning,

but the last time
I talked to Dave,

he said, "We're changing it."

It might be propane,
it might be wood.

Who knows?

We'll have to wait and see.

(upbeat music)

Down the hill on the harbour,

we're almost finished
the 150-year-old Gushues' hous.

It's been in Tim's family
for generations.

Beautiful character
on the house.

Look at the old handrails
and stuff that they got.

- Oh yes. We used to slide
down that as youngsters.

(Randy):
There's a lot of memories
and history

in this house for Tim.

We wanna save as much as we
can, inside and out.

We built a new addition
that was inspired

by Newfoundland lighthouses.

On the main floor,
there's a sitting area for Val

and anyone that wants
to drop in.

Upstairs, there's a new study
overlooking the harbour.

Or as Tim would call it,
the captain's quarters.

To preserve history,

we're keeping the old
floorboards and staircase.

You can't buy that anymore.

We're here trying to
prep the Gushues' stairs.

So, we gotta haul all these
tiny little staples out

so we can put a stripper on.

(upbeat music)

At some point, there was carpet
on this staircase,

and it left a real mess
for me and Nikki to clean.

Nikki's lovin' it.

- I don't know about loving it.

They're tedious.

Like, that's how tiny they are
trying to get out.

Excruciating.

Being the rookie,
we are the ones who gotta do

the job nobody wants to do.

You're the one who's got to do
the runnin' around

because they've already
got their seniority

and their experience.

Being so new and naive
and not knowing,

coming in and having
a good team to support you

and we has a good time.

If we didn't have a good team,

I probably still
wouldn't be here.

- We'll keep going.

(upbeat music)

(Randy): Now that we have
all the staples out,

we can start stripping
the layers, and layers,

and layers of paint.

- The process is pretty slow.

There's a lot of coats of paint.

The house is 150 years old,

so you knows now every year
at Christmas,

they're painting the colour
to brighten it up.

- Man oh man. How many layers
of paint is on that?

Way more layers of paint here.

- Mother...

- This paint remover only does
like 30 layers of paint,

so I guess we're at
the 30 limit.

There's still some
paint left there.

Definitely gonna need
to reapply down here, Nikki.

- Oh, for sure.

(Randy): It's good to keep
these old stairs

and the memories,

but this is misery.

Fifty layers of paint.
So horrible.

So horrible.

(Randy): Down the hill
on the harbour,

at the 150-year-old
Gushue home,

a lot of paint removal,
a lot of mess.

This is a lot longer
of a process than I thought.

He wants bare wood,

so we're gonna have to probably
give that another coat

or a little buff
with the sandpaper.

We'll try a couple
of different things

see which way works the best.

A little inland,
my dad and I

are finally moving forward
on my mom's new house.

Since we're building
it ourselves,

we're doing it for $200,000

if there's no more delays.

We got the foundation in,

and then we got hit
by a major storm of the centur.

It buried the site for months.

We got a big mess!

But not anymore!

Now that spring is here,

I called in Paul, Al, and Nikki

to get us back on track.

(Randy): They hate delays
as much as I do,

and plus it's for my mom,

and she's like family
to them too.

Today's goal is to get
the floor on and the walls up

so it starts looking
like a house.

Even though it's spring,
weather is still a big factor.

(thunder rumbling)

We're gonna be trying
to stick all these walls

we got framed up.

The weather's gonna be coming,

so we're in a race against time.

(upbeat music)

My mom's new house
is a two-bedroom

single storey,
with a cabin-in-the-woods feel.

You walk through the front door
with a large open-concept

kitchen and dining
with an island in the middle.

In the living room,
there's a bump out

for a fireplace.

One, two, three!

We got the full crew
here today,

just because the winter
been so harsh,

and we had so many delays.

We're kinda behind the 8-ball.

(Paul): Come back to me an inch.

- Framing is fun.
Framing's when you get

to see everything come together.

(Paul): Back!
(Nikki): And framing is fun

'cause we work very well
together as a team.

- Perfect.

- One, two, three!

(Randy): This afternoon,
we're supposed to have

a lot of rain and a lot of win,

and we won't be able
to do any work.

It's a good idea
to have braces,

and we'll have
a lot more braces.

We don't want this to blow down.

(Randy): Now that the walls
are up, it's great.

It's gonna feel even better

when I can actually
get my mom inside the house,

and she can start
living normal again.

(Nikki): Pull.

(thunder booming)

(Randy): The rain has started!

It wasn't supposed to be
until after lunch,

but not even close.

The only one that likes this
today is a duck.

(quacking)

We were hoping to get
most of the day out of it

so we could have all
the walls framed up.

It's another delay,
another day gone.

We're off to another
job site, though.

Can't stop for today.

(upbeat music)

(Randy): Across town
up on the hill,

me and Nikki's
at the Mitchell residence.

And we're nice and dry.

We're here to get
the fireplace finished.

(Nikki): Is this going
in here tight?

- Yeah.

We gotta install some
shiplap on the fireplace.

The Mitchell project is a huge
renovation.

We added two additions,

one for a new mudroom,

and the other
for a massive kitchen.

With an open-concept design,

the living room has to be
a showstopper as well,

starting with the fireplace.

It was big, bulky,
and out of date,

so the Mitchells
just wanted it to fit in

with the rest of the design.

So it's me and Nikki.

32 and seven eighths.
(Nikki): 32 and seven eighths.

- She's gonna be doing
the cutting.

She's got pressure on her today.

I'm gonna be doing the nailing,

and, uh, try to get
this fireplace done today.

- Off the phone!

- Ah! Ah! Ah!

It's not too bad.

The start process
to actually get going

is the hardest thing
with the shiplap.

We should be able to bang
this out in a couple hours.

- Seventy-three
and three-sixteenths?

- No, one eighth.

- Seventy-three and one-eighth?

(Randy): Shiplap is pretty
popular these days,

but it been in the East Coast
for centuries.

We've been doing shiplap
before it was cool.

With shiplap, the boards
are joined together

with a 90-degree notch

that's called a rabbet joint.

It's called shiplap
because the old-timers

build the boats
out of these old boards.

And the seal between 'em
was watertight.

Shiplap was used on a lot
of Newfoundland houses.

It kept that sideways rain out.

- You're not gonna need too many
more of them long ones.

- I'll need two more pieces.

(upbeat music)

We're using shiplap
on the Mitchells' fireplace

for a design feature.

It's a shout-out
to the Newfoundland ways,

and it's a way to bring
some old into the new.

Plus, Deana wants
that coastal feel.

(upbeat music)

Down on the harbour
back at the Neils' house,

we're getting ready to fix
the family dock.

I got Paul, Al, and Nikki

ready to build the forms
for the new concrete.

We're basically pouring concree
over the ocean

to fix the damage.

In order to do this, we're gona
drill a bunch of holes

into the existing dock

and put one-inch rebar
into 'em,

and that's gonna hold the forms
while we pour the concrete.

The forms are basically a box,

and that's gonna
hold the concrete

while it dries
for a couple of days.

When the concrete is all dry,

we can bust off the forms,
and then we're all done.

The challenge is doing it
from the water,

and that's where
we're gonna work from a raft.

That's where Nikki comes in.

- And we thought she was
gonna be good on a raft.

(laughing)

- Give me your hand!

- We're gonna build a raft.

We're gonna take two barrels
and build a frame around it

so we can get in the water
and, uh,

Nikki had two days off,
so she drew...

drawed the short straw.

- So, I've been off on
a little bit of a mini holiday

the last few days,

so because I missed the last
couple of days,

I'm the lucky one
who gets to go on the barge

and be in the water.
So, we'll see how that pans out.

(Randy): We couldn't find
a little raft,

and a canoe was probably
gonna be too tippy,

so barrels, and make a little
floating dock.

Put it on drill.

- Spracklin!
(laughing)

- It's okay.
You had two days...

- I'm on a bit of an angle first
so I can get it to go straight.

- She was on holidays.
We'll let that one go.

(laughing)

SS Nikki.

- Let 'er go.

- Dead honest?

Randy's got a bit
of confidence in me

because I've got my sea legs.

being in a boat jiggin',

Out on the side of the cliff,

to put me on this.

So, being used to cod jiggin'
and doing this?

It's chalk and cheese.

Now all jokes aside,

I knows we likes to have
a good time,

but don't go playin' no funny
tricks while I'm on that.

- No, no. You're not
goin' in today.

- If I'm goin' in,
you're comin with me.

(Randy laughing)

- Hold on to the wire.

Now you can haul
yourself across, right?

- Right there is good.

Stop movin' the boat!

Oh, hang on.

- Told ya, she got her sea legs.

Nikki has to drill
a half a dozen holes

into the old dock.

They have to be seven to eight
inches deep.

She got her work
cut out for her.

- It's hard tryin'
to balance yourself

and push at the same time.

Boys, don't go laughin' either,
because I'll jump off.

(suspenseful music)

I gotta move back
for a second, Spracklin.

- This is gonna be the worst,
'cause you're gonna have

a lot of rope out.

Uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh!

- Boys, I still can't hold!

(Randy): Down on the harbour
at the Neils' house...

Uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh!

- Boys, I still can't hold!

- Hang on, hang on, hang on.
Calm, huh?

(Randy laughing)

- Hey, young fella!

My leg is shaking here now.

This is my mind,
"Don't fall over,

(Randy): Nikki's doing
an awesome job

drilling the holes
for the rebar.

- Me arms is gettin' tired!

- Now we can start
building the forms.

- 'Kay.

- Perfect! Done!

- Done!
- Nobody fell in!

- And you didn't fall in.
- Good job on raft control.

- Hey, Nikki did all right.

She rocked that barge.

Got all the bolts in,
and she never fell in.

So next, we'll build
the forms on the water.

Here, do you want me
to get that one?

You don't want a blowout there.

A big blow out would mean

we're gonna lose all
the concrete out into the ocean.

Concrete got so much pressure

when it's actually formed,

and if we don't have it
bolted in tight and good,

the concrete can actually
push the form out,

and all run out
in the ocean.

If we have a blowout,
that's like a $2,000 bill

and another day's labour.

Nikki, I need it to be like,
four inches longer,

and then cut it...
- On a 45?

- Yeah, yeah, yeah.

It's going pretty good.

We still gotta bolt
on the bottom of this form.

The tide is coming in.

This morning, the tide out
was good.

It worked to our advantage.

Now that it's up,

our little floating dock
is almost level with this dock,

so somebody gotta sit down on it

and probably put
their feet in the water.

Probably gonna be Nikki.

Hopefully there's no
sharks around.

- Duh-nuh! Dun-nuh!

- So you're gonna have
to sit in the middle,

brace your feet against
the concrete.

- I gots like,
two-foot legs, man!

How do you expect me
to put my (bleep) out there

and my legs in here?

(upbeat music)

(Randy): Like all
of our projects,

this one is a real
team effort.

Nikki and Paul
is finishing up the forms...

...while I prep
for the concrete delivery.

Today went okay.

If it rains tomorrow,

in this scenario,
we can't pour concrete,

just because it'll make
it too wet. It's a no-no.

(thunder booming)

Sure enough, the Newfoundland
weather got us again.

Rain and concrete don't mix.

It sucks. I gotta push
for another day.

So, luckily enough,
the roof trusses

showed up at my mom's place.

No amount of rain
is gonna stop us at this.

Seems like this project here
been delay after delay.

We're here today, like,
soaking wet.

Not ideal. Nobody loves it,
but we're gonna get it done.

The whole house is completely
framed up now.

We have a big boom truck
to lift the roof trusses

one at a time.

So I have Al making all
the adjustments on the ground.

Paul and Josh are up on the rof

nailing the roof trusses
in place.

And Nikki,
she's gonna guide them in.

- You're the tag person?

Boom!

Stressed out!

Never done trusses, so...

- So keep a little bit
of a tension on it.

Don't ever get
your hands caught.

Don't get hooked up
in the rope,

like a fisherman.

in the rain.

Rain slows you down, generally.

But we're in Newfoundland!

You gotta be with the boom.

When you sees the boom,

an easy job for anybody.

And up there is just as hard,

so it'll be nice when it's done.

It's been a rough day,

me and Nikki is back
at Neils' place.

The concrete is getting
poured today

but as usual, the weather
is not in our favour.

It's been raining here
all morning.

The weather person said
it was supposed to be sunshine,

but we had a lot of rain.

Too much rain,
we can't pour concrete.

Big stakes,
because if the truck comes

and we can't pour, like,

the concrete is two to three
thousand dollars,

so I'm gonna be out
that money and, uh...

Not gonna be fun.

Not having this done today
puts us in a big bind.

- The work is done,
pretty much.

We just gotta get
the weather to hold off

so we can get it here.

Rain, rain, go away!

We need our concrete today!

(Randy): With the rain pushing
back on our concrete pour

at Neils' dock,

we could still move ahead
at the Gushues' house

down the bay.

Paul and Nikki
are installing the new floor

upstairs in Tim's
captain's quarters.

- Twenty inches?

- Nineteen
and fifteen sixteenths.

(Randy): The old master bedroom

is being turned
into a new office.

Plenty of room
for a desk and built-ins.

The new add-on is gonna be
a great spot

for Tim to look out
over the harbour.

- No pressure.

- With these old houses,
it's always a challenge

mixing the old with the new.

We're keeping all
the old floorboards

in the study area.

So, picking the new floor,

we wanted to compliment
the old flooring,

and not look so out of place.

(Paul): Don't push down so hard

'cause you're putting
the brakes on.

I've had a few apprentices,
you know,

throughout the years.

The big thing that makes
a good apprentice

over a bad apprentice

is their will to listen.

- So, I needs to come up
and put more nails in?

- More screws.

And just retain
the little bit of knowledge

that you're taking the time
to show them.

That's your prep.
Prep is everything.

That's a lot of qualities,
which Nikki got.

- I'm still learning.
I'm not as fast

as the rest of the boys.

My ultimate goal in doing this

is to be the journey person
like Paul.

- So now see if you
can make that squeak.

No more squeak.

- I wanna follow in his
footsteps one of these days.

It might take me
twice as long as him

to get there,
but I'm gonna get there.

(Randy): With the skies
cleared up,

the whole crew is back
at Neils' dock.

The weather is working out.

There's no rain. That's cool.
- Woo-woo!

We have a two-hour window

to get this concrete poured.

That's our truck!

Ready to go!

The concrete form's
next to the ocean.

It's two stories below
the ground level

and there's no easy access.

So, we had to build a chute
from the top level

to get to the dock.

It's like one big slide
for concrete.

Then we had to fill
the wheelbarrows full of cemen,

bring them over to the chute,

and put 'em down below.

Put a bit in 'er.

Not an easy job.

We got all hands on deck,

and a great assembly line.

The whole team loves
when we're all working togethe.

It's all comin together!

The concrete's going
in the form.

If anything's gonna happen
to it, it's when it's all

full of concrete,
that's the most pressure.

I'm not gonna say anything else
about it not going in the water

'til we're done.

(upbeat music)

Pouring the concrete
is the first step.

The next step is getting
them air bubbles out.

This is a, uh...

just an old stick

we use to plunge concrete
to make sure it gets in

every crevice.

If you leave air bubbles
in the concrete,

you're gonna create voids,

which is a structural no-no,

because salt water is able
to get inside,

and that'll break it to pieces,

and then we'll have
to fix it again.

So, we have to keep plungin'

until it's solid as a rock.

And when we're done,

we use it as a fishing pole.

I say start fillin'
the other side.

So, the hard part is done,

but we still have to fix
the walls on the upper deck.

Today went well. We started off

in the pouring rain
this morning.

Didn't really think we were
gonna make it happen,

but we did.

It's done. No blowouts.

- There's no easy job
when it comes to cement.

- No.

- The next step
is let this harden.

So, we'll come back
tomorrow morning

and strip all the forms off,

and hopefully
it all looks pretty.

(upbeat music)

Back at the Gushues' house,

we got the stairs
stripped, sanded,

and using white as an accent
to really bring it back to lif.

- Fill me up.

- The character on them steps
is 150 years old.

There's a lot of people
travelling

up and down them stairs.

Even Tim as a little boy.

So, you definitely don't
wanna paint over the treads.

It's a lot of history in
looking at that natural wood.

- What a difference!

A huge difference!
It's like chalk and cheese.

(Randy): So with
the painting finished,

I know Tim and Valerie
wanna move into this house

very quick.

So, we gotta move
on to the electrical.

And Steven, my electrician,
is here to help.

Puttin' the lights
where they gotta go here now.

Low turn chandelier.

You wanna make sure
that the lights

go in the right location,

so I'm just checking my list.

Study times three.

So, they go upstairs.

On the second floor

where the old master bedroom
used to be,

we're creating a new office
and a lookout area for Tim.

- What we'll do here now
is we'll find centre...

- Yeah.
- ...go 37...

- Yeah.
- ...and then whatever's left...

- Whatever's left,
we'll take it off?

- You'll halve that one.
- No problem.

- I'll build it to fit, kinda.

In Tim's study,

we're building a custom
wall unit for more storage.

It'll have special lighting
to showcase Tim's collectibles.

When we pre-build in the shop,

the measurements
have to be precise

in order to match up with
the lighting plan on site...

we hope.

It's definitely a great
feature wall for his new study

to be able to put items,

and it's gonna look good
at the end.

at the Gushues',

I can bring my team back
to finish the dock

at the Neils' house.

Today, we gotta unbolt
the anchors

that we had holding the forms,

get that off, then we're able
to haul the form off

and see what we got.

you were eating

This dock been a challenge
for sure,

especially with all the delays

and working
with expensive concrete.

to cut off the excess rebar

and then it's all done.

It turned out really good,
nice and smooth,

no honeycombs.

Fixing the dock at the Neils'

has been challenging for sure.

Retiring the barge.

Now that it's all done,
I feel good.

It's cool to work on
the most photographed house

in Brigus,
right next to the ocean.

We'll probably take on another
water project,

because Nikki got her sea legs,

we even got a barge.

(bright music)

And there she was,
on dry dock.

- Toodle-loo, barge!

(laughing)

(Randy): So back
at the woodshop...

...my dad's working on
the built-ins

for Tim's study.

- Get the table saw going.

- We're just a few days

from Tim and Valerie
moving back in,

and there's so much stuff to d,

including all the finer detail.

So, I called in Sam and Sasha

because they do amazing work

all over the area,
and it'd be fitting

to decorate this one as well.

So, this is an older home
that we're adding a piece on,

And it's really special
to the homeowners.

His father grew up
in this house.

It's a hundred and plus
year old house,

so it means a lot to him.
So we want to bring that

into the house.
- Yeah, oh I can't wait

to get in there and do it.
- Can't wait.

- We're also adding
a new covered patio.

Tim refers to it
as a front bridge

because he calls this whole
place a landlocked ship.

- Oh, that's perfect.
- Yeah, I love that.

So, on the new bridge,

we could do maybe some
rocking chairs,

some outdoor furniture.

- It's somewhere you're gonna
want to sit outside, the view.

They're right on the water.

- Sit down there,
look out over the ocean,

watch the whales.
- Yeah.

We really have to make that
a living space.

- Oh, yeah. I think they'll
spend just as much time

outside as inside.
- For sure.

So then, we have a nice
sitting area outside,

that's great.
So let's bring that feel maybe

into the living area
a little bit.

So when we go into
the living area,

is there any existing colours
that we're gonna be

working with right now?
- Yeah, the trim is blue.

- Okay.
- Think like blueberries.

- Okay.
(laughing)

- Brigus is famous
for their blueberries,

so I know Valerie
will wanna incorporate that.

- So I think it's really
important to complement

the blue trim, but we won't go
overboard with the blue.

- No. So maybe with
the blue trim,

we can bring in some wallpaper
to soften the trim

a little bit?
- Yeah, I think that would be

really nice, and a little bit
maybe a vintage feel

too with the wallpaper
where the house is older.

- Sounds Brigus!
- Oh, I love using wallpaper!

And then maybe in
Valerie's extension,

do some colours that complement
the blue.

- So soft tones.
- Yeah.

- So it goes well together,
'cause it's an open space.

- It is, yeah.

- So for Valerie's space,
I think the key for us

is to have really soft
furnishings.

- And maybe we'll use
some furniture

that has some curved lines
to kinda work

with the shape of the room.

- Sounds like a retreat.
Sitting back, looking out

over the ocean.
- Right?

- I almost wants to go there!
(laughing)

- We'll go in,
Randy's laying back,

having a time!
- A cup of tea.

- Now that you got a room
made for two of 'em,

but mostly Valerie,
let's talk about upstairs.

It's gonna be Tim's space.

As Tim called it,
the Captain Quarters,

and design a room for him.

(Sasha): I like the idea
of doing a study,

having his desk, built-ins.

(Sam): We can show all
his pieces then

in the built-ins.
- Exactly.

- It'll be like a little
museum of his pieces.

And also we can do
a colour that really complements

the blue that's happening
downstairs.

- Change it up a bit.
- Like a darker green?

- Yeah. I love the idea
of the green.

I think that would be
great, because I feel like

that colouring on its own
will kind of stand out,

so we don't need a huge
amount of other colours

and textures, decor-wise.
- Exactly.

All of his pieces,
his collection,

will speak for itself.

- It sounds like you ladies
got this!

- Oh, I think so!
- Oh, we're ready!

- I'll just go back to work,
leave you to it!

- You get working
on the built-ins.

- I know, right?
(laughing)

(Randy): So not a minute
too soon,

them built-ins is ready
to install.

- When my dad builds
something in the shop,

he loves to see that
project right through.

So, it's him and Al
putting them in.

Once they're up,
they'll need a lick of paint.

Don't leave any holidays.

Holidays mean when
you're painting,

you'll miss a spot,

because you went home
and had a holiday.

(Rand): Down on the harbour
at the 150-year-old

Gushues' house,

this $80,000 project
is almost complete.

We got all hands on deck
to get it done.

Today, I'm not the boss.

The designers are.

I'm just doin' what I'm told.

Hanging pictures.

So, Sam and Sasha
can put their final touches

on this amazing
150-year-old house.

- It was definitely a challenge

designing three very
different spaces.

Upstairs is really Tim's space.

Downstairs is Val's own space,

and then the living room
is kind of their space together.

- They have two totally
different personalities.

Such beautiful people,

but he is the captain,

and she is the lady.
(laughing)

The key with each room
is that we brought a little

piece into each room.

So, bringing the green
in from upstairs

down to the living room.

Bringing the pink from here
back into the living room.

So it all kind of tied together.

(Sam): The wallpaper
is very Newfoundland.

It's very Brigus.

It's by a Canadian designer,

and she actually came
to Newfoundland,

spent some time here,

and created
a Newfoundland collection.

It's got that beautiful blue
that is in the trim

and in the doors,

but also that really beautiful
soft green

that we've tied in
throughout the house.

- This house is extra special
to Tim and for Valerie now too

because Tim's father
was actually born in this house.

And for Tim and Valerie

to walk in and enjoy the space,

it means everything.

Well, what do you think
of your front porch?

(Valerie gasps)
(Tim): Oh, my.

Well, you've been busy.

(Randy): We've been busy!

(Valerie): Oh my gosh,
it's beautiful!

- Amazing, isn't it?

- I love it. What we like
to call the front bridge.

- Front bridge.

(Valerie): This is beautiful!

The furniture, the colours,
the flowers.

We really weren't expecting

the covered bridge to be
such a key part of our home.

But to see it transformed,

it's just gorgeous.

- Way back
when you started it,

there was no covering at all.

But in the pictures
that we could see

from about the 1890s,

it had the covered bridge.

In fact, my aunt
who is in her 100th year

remembers when it was removed

and wished that it hadn't.

So, she's still with us,

so she'll be happy
to see it back.

- Yes, well there you go,

we're puttin' a little bit
of history back.

- Yeah, exactly.

- Think this is beautiful?
Wait 'til you see inside.

(Valerie): Oh, Randy,
it's absolutely beautiful.

It's absolutely gorgeous.

It's hard to believe that this
was the same space, Randy.

- It is, yes.
- It's been totally transformed.

It's amazing.

This wallpaper
is just beautiful,

with the blueberries.

(Randy): It goes hand-in-hand,

the wallpaper
with the blueberries,

the blue on the trim.

- Blue seas and blue skies.

(laughing)
- It is, for sure.

- It's everything
we could have wanted,

and I think more.
- More.

- I absolutely love
how you've been able

to take what was here
in the 1870s,

and take it
to the modern times,

but not leave the past behind.

- That's what our joy is,
these old houses,

to actually build a piece on,

but keep a lot of the original,

like the staircase.

- Yeah!
- You used to slide down this

as a boy.
- As a youngster, yeah.

- It was a lot of work
to bring this back to life,

but it was well worth it.
- Oh, I think so!

- And can you imagine
them stair treads,

if they could talk?
A hundred years

of people walking up
over with their boots on.

- Well, I don't know
what house you lived in,

but there'd be no boots
going up that one here.

(laughing)

- So keeping them little pieces

is a great feeling for us,
and I'm sure it's great for you.

And even tearing down
this old wall,

we found an old hockey card.

(Harvey): Randy Moller.
- Oh yeah?

- Quebec Nordiques.

- Let's take a look
at your room.

- Oh, I'd love to see my room.

This is absolutely gorgeous!

It really captures
what I wanted here,

which was a lovely
feminine space.

I feel that here,
and oh my gosh,

there's just so much here
to take in!

This is where I want
to have friends and family,

sit, relax, have a cup of tea,

a glass of wine.

- That's a nice place for it.
- Oh, it's beautiful.

And what's lovely
is the room flows,

so you can just enjoy
all of the space.

- It's a beautiful space,
and it all started,

if you can remember
your coin ceremony.

- Yes!

- I think it's supposed
to bring good luck?

- Loads of good luck.
And did you feel you had good

fortune as you
worked through it?

- We did. We had a lot
of good luck on this one.

Everything went smooth,
and actually,

it was Nikki's first time

framing up this
one, her and Paul.

- Well, you wouldn't know it.
- So we had the whole team in

from the ground up, and...

it was just a fun
build to be in.

- You built an amazing piece
of additional property for us,

and now this space
is just transformed.

It's gorgeous.

- Even though the first level
is amazing,

we got another level
to go have a look at as well.

- Well, Valerie,
if you're free to cut us adrift

to go have a look at that?
- For sure.

- Can't wait to see it.

- Tim always refers
to this place

as a landlocked ship,

and it's always interesting
to work with homeowners

like that. So, for Tim,
this is his ship,

and I think we made it work.

She's stuck aground.

This is gorgeous.

- I love the colour.

The beautiful lamps there.

- Oh, wow.
- It's like your below-decks.

Well, well done.

I love what's done here.
The shelves are fantastic.

- We knew you had a lot
of artifacts,

so why not do a built-in
in this room?

- It's absolutely perfect
to gather up

all the little treasures
from all the little voyages.

(Randy): Me and Father
back in the wood shop,

Paul and Albert was here
putting them together.

So it was a team effort.

- Holy smoke. I love it!

It's absolutely beyond
what I could have imagined

was possible for this space.

Beautiful.
(Valerie): Oh, wow.

- It'll be a job to get me
out of it!

- It will indeed.

- I'm thrilled to death
with my space,

the ship's office,

and what I call
the captain's cabin,

where we have the panoramas
out the window.

This house, it was built
in 1870.

We still have the feel
for the old home,

but we've now been able
to take it

to the next generations,

and hopefully for another
century and a half beyond that.

- What you've been able
to do with our home

is really incredible.

- Oh, thanks.

- See, we got two great spaces.
There's only one final

thing to do.
- We must put a name

on this ship!
- Yes, indeed.

- Something that usually happens
with a ship,

they'll christen it,
so with this being

a landlocked ship,
it wouldn't be fitting

if we didn't have
the whole team.

And we're gonna name this ship.

- This home,
which has stood here

since around 1870,

has never received a name.

We have chosen
to give our home

the name Le Bleuet,

the French Canadian word
for blueberry,

the modest berry for which
Brigus is renowned

that helped ensured
our ancestors' survival

through the long winter.
