It's one of the great mysteries of World War II.

has gotta be buried in that mountain.

infamous Japanese general Yamashita

allegedly buried thousands of crates

throughout the Philippines

near the end of the war.

‐ They were just taking anything of value

gold, silver, weapons,

even military secrets.

Yamashita's treasure could be anything.

‐ Peter Struzzieri and John Casey

are searching for Yamashita's treasure

following a trail of symbols and markers

across a remote mountain in the Philippines.

‐ Now that's a frickin' pyramid.

‐ They believe the mountain could hide a labyrinth

of treasure tunnels.

And now scans suggest one tunnel may lie right beneath them.

The only question is how to access it.

‐ It's actually the Golden Lily symbol

showing us a back door.

‐ Golden Lily symbols may point to both a front door

and a back door to the tunnel,

but they are blocked.

So to get to the tunnel, they will dig straight down.

Brad and Jeremy move their equipment into position.

‐ Fire it up. Let's get to work.

We're gonna find this void.

‐ Yes, sir.

Oh...that, that digs pretty good.

I hope it stays like that.

‐ While Brad and Jeremy excavate the back door,

Peter, John, and Martin meet at base camp

to discuss their next steps.

‐ Guys, I think working from the top

and going straight down is the best way to go.

‐ And what if they hit that super hard layer at 35 feet

where we chewed up all the drill bits?

‐ Hold! Hold!

‐ We gotta stop.

‐ What the hell did this thing hit?

‐ Whoa, that hit something awful hard.

‐ How's it gonna get through that?

‐ Hopefully it's just one really hard boulder

confined to one spot.

And maybe with the excavator, we can avoid that.

‐ Okay, well that sounds great.

That might be the safest way to get down there.

‐ We don't have to mess with the rocks at the back door,

and I'mI'm a little afraid of those.

From my research, General Yamashita

would've protected this back door.

So we have to be very careful when we take it apart.

And then they probably have a map or schematics

on how to get in here, which we don't have.

‐ The team already found a World War II‐era

explosive detonator in a nearby cave.

‐ Hold, hold, hold!

‐ To avoid triggering these types of booby traps,

Martin believes the Golden Lily

may have drawn up detailed maps

to safely navigate the tunnels

and retrieve their treasure after the war.

It is possible that it was this type of map

that Roger Roxas used

when he found his Golden Buddha in 1971.

But the team has not recovered a map

that corresponds to their mountain.

‐ All right, so with that said,

any other ideas about what to look for?

‐ I think we're, you know,

I think we should still look around the waterfalls

to see what was on top of it and behind it.

It could very well be there.

I'm convinced there's something there.

‐ Well, that'd be a good deal

because you've got so many symbols right down here

from the Golden Lily.

You have the two face markers,

you have a box marker down there,

and you have the bottom of the waterfall

where you have that turtle marker in there.

So, I think that's a good idea.

‐ Yeah, we also got that big hit,

that bit metallic hit with the magnetometer

18 feet behind the wall.

‐ Oh, yeah, good signal, good metallic signal.

‐ We should get back up there, take another look.

‐ We definitely gotta go back there.

There's no doubt in my mind.

There's definitely something significant,

and I will find it.

‐ John and Manny head up to the waterfall

to re‐examine the area for additional clues.

‐ We need to find the entrance to this tunnel.

It's gotta be here somewhere.

What am I not seeing?

Weeds are covering it, something's up.

All these markers are telling us here, somewhere,

that tunnel network's here.

I'm gonna drop down on this little ledge here

and check this whole thing.

And then I'm gonna move up and check the next fault line,

and the next one and the next one until we find it.

‐ Meanwhile, back in the U. S.,

researcher Bingo Minerva

is on his way to visit attorney Dan Cathcart who claims

that he has information that may be useful to the team.

Weeks earlier, Peter had a meeting with Henry Roxas

whose father, Roger,

reportedly discovered a portion of Yamashita's treasure

only to have it confiscated by the Filipino government.

Cathcart represented the Roxas estate

in a landmark civil case

against former Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos.

Dan Cathcart has been in ill health in recent years

and requested his co‐counsel, Ward Jones,

join them for this meeting.

‐ Hello. ‐ Are you Ward?

‐ Yes. ‐ Bingo.

Good to finally meet you. ‐ Oh, nice to meet you.

Bingo, this is Dan Cathcart.

Dan Cathcart, Bingo. ‐ Dan, good to finally meet you.

‐ Nice to see you.

‐ So, how did you get involved in this case?

‐ After allegedly finding what became known

as the Golden Buddha and a cache of gold bars,

Roger Roxas was reportedly robbed of his treasure,

beaten and jailed for several years

by members of Marcos's regime.

Nearly 22 years later, in 1993,

while President Marcos was in exile in Hawaii,

the Roxas family won a $22 billion judgment

against him for false imprisonment,

torture, and theft.

Since then, the case has been mired in appeals.

But the Hawaii Supreme Court's decision

was a significant public acknowledgement

of the existence of Yamashita's treasure.

‐ Who is Bob Curtis?

‐ And these depositions here, these are all sworn statements?

‐ Uh, may we have the witness sworn, please?

‐ Do you solemnly swear the testimony you are about to give

in this cause will be the truth, so help you God?

‐ May we get your name on the record, please?

‐ Bob Curtis was an American mining engineer

who claims he was contacted by President Marcos

to help him launder his gold.

It was Curtis's first‐hand accounts

of Marcos's enormous stash of treasure

that aided Dan Cathcart in proving his case.

‐ According to Curtis's testimony,

Marcos told him of the vast amount of gold

he had already recovered.

And Curtis learned of the existence

of numerous other treasure sites yet to be found.

‐ To further prove his case,

Cathcart followed the trail of money

associated with Marcos's finances

during his time as president of the Philippines.

‐ I see, banks depository.

‐ CIA?

‐ Do we know why they were involved?

‐ Did you have any trouble investigating

any parts of this case because of that,

because of CIA involvement?

‐ Your office was bugged?

‐ Oh, wow.

‐ Really.

Dan, Ward, I appreciate greatly

the amount of information you've shared with me today.

I was actually wondering, is it okay if I take,

you know, some of these case files with me,

do a little bit more research on?

‐ Awesome. Well, thank you for that.

The meeting with Cathcart went really well.

I left with a ton of information.

I think the biggest takeaway was the U. S. government

may be involved in treasure hunting

in the Philippines.

I mean, really, how far does this go? Who knows?

I can't wait to get back and discuss this with the guys.

‐ Back in the Philippines,

Brad and Jeremy are clearing the ground

and beginning to dig down to what they hope is a tunnel.

‐ II can't wait to see something

come out of the ground here.

Now, this definitely is not the prettiest hole I've ever dug.

It's probably one of the hardest holes I've ever dug,

but I'll tell you what.

It doesn't have to be a pretty hole

to find treasure in the bottom of it.

It'll be a beautiful hole then.

We've got some really large, large rocks to handle,

but we can do it, we can do it.

It's a little bit of time.

‐ Back at base camp, Bingo updates Peter and Martin

about his meeting with attorney Cathcart.

‐ Hey Bingo, how you doin'?

‐ Hey guys, I'm doin' good.

I sent you a bunch of information

from the interview I did with Dan Cathcart.

In particular, I want you to check out

the deposition on Bob Curtis.

Now, he was a key witness in the Roxas Case.

He had quite a bit of information

on Yamashita treasure sites.

I think there's gonna be something on there

you're gonna want to see.

‐ Okay, we'll take a look at that.

‐ Wow!

That's right where our mountain is.

‐ I mean, that's definitely right in our region.

‐ Isis that the same mountain that he's talking about?

‐ You know, I don't know if it's the same mountain,

but it is definitely same region.

I mean, it's just further confirmation

that you guys are probably on the right path.

‐ That's good.

‐ Exactly, further confirmation,

that's what I needed.

So maybe this means that Marcos knew about our mountain too.

‐ Possibly, also the CIA.

‐ How is the CIA involved in this?

‐ Well, Cathcart seems to think that the CIA

were following the Roxas case pretty closely.

He thinks they may have wanted to profit

off of Yamashita's treasure.

‐ Well, that's a pretty bold claim.

I'm not sure that I accept all of that.

‐ You know, I'm not totally convinced yet, either.

I mean, Bob Curtis and CIA ties,

I mean, there's still a bit of research there to do.

‐ This Curtis guy seems to be a very interesting character.

We need to learn more about him.

‐ Meanwhile, at the waterfall,

John and Manny have been searching

for a way to access a possible tunnel

behind the rock wall.

‐ Gotta be a way.

There's something I'm missing.

I just gotta keep looking.

‐ John discovers what he believes

to be a man‐made marker.

‐ I cannot believe it.

You know, I'm just baffled.

‐ Just looks like a stone with a lot of holes in it.

‐ Well, there'll be one way to find out.

I have to talk to Martin.

‐ Meanwhile, above what the team is calling the backdoor site,

Brad and Jeremy continue excavating,

hoping to access the void space

that lies 40 feet below, according to ground scans.

‐ Ah, dammit!

It just won't go.

I see something a little odd.

Oh, for sake, cap off of a rock.

I actually thought that was maybe a bowl or a plate,

or maybe a helmet piece.

Ah, wishful thinking.

Gotta keep my eyes open for anything.

I'm looking for treasure.

‐ Back at base camp, John joins Peter

and symbols expert Martin Flagg

to share his discovery at the waterfall.

‐ Okay, I come off the top of the waterfall

and come down the first face of the rock,

and there's a ledge there just wide enough to walk on.

It's hard to tell in this picture,

but it is cut back into the rock.

And all those little holes are like

almost perfectly drilled in there.

‐ What does it look like to you, Martin?

‐ I've never seen anything like this.

If I had to take a guess, I'd say it would be a drain,

or an air vent.

‐ I've been watching the depositions

of Bob Curtis at the Roxas trial

and he mentions this site called the Teresa‐2 site.

‐ They didn't dig a hole.

They dropped down through an air shaft

to get to the treasure site.

‐ The Teresa site is one of 175 locations

that allegedly contains Yamashita's treasure.

Bob Curtis claims he discovered it

with a team of Americans

working with Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos.

According to Curtis,

the main entrance had been blasted shut.

But his team gained access via one of three vertical shafts.

Then recovered 23 truckloads

of gold bars worth nearly $8 billion.

Now Peter and John are hoping an air vent

might also be their way

in to whatever lies behind the waterfall.

‐ So a vent.

That's a really good theory.

I like it.

You know, we've been looking

for horizontal tunnels underground.

Every big tunnel would have an air shaft.

If this symbol means air vent,

it's gotta be close to where this marker is.

‐ You gotta get back up there and check this out.

‐ I'm all over it.

‐ Back in the United States,

after meeting attorney Dan Cathcart,

and hearing of a possible CIA connection

to Yamashita's treasure,

Bingo's research has led him to JD Foringer.

‐ Hey, JD? ‐ Yes, sir.

‐ Great to finally meet you. ‐ You too, thanks.

‐ Thanks for having me.

‐ JD Foringer served for over 20 years

as an officer in the United States Navy.

He has spent almost two decades

researching possible connections between his brother,

Yamashita's treasure, and the CIA.

‐ A lot of cool stuff you got here.

‐ These coin holders represent

the different ships that I was on.

The USS "Midway," that was my first ship.

"Midway" was named after the Battle of Midway,

basically our first major battle

after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

And "Midway" always went to the Philippines.

And that's how I was overseas

when my brother was in the Philippines

and I was able to visit him.

‐ So can you tell me about your brother?

‐ Alan was a super patriot.

He graduated from Duke University in 1976

summa cum laude, political science and economics.

He always worked these sales kind of jobs

that didn't anchor him to one location.

It had him on the road a lot.

This picture shows him in the last year of his life.

And this is with some of the family members

that he lived with in the Philippines.

He was there 'til his death in 1991.

He was my big brother and it hit me hard.

So I started researching at that point

his life and death.

My brother was an officer

in the company called Nippon Star.

Nippon Star was the company

that my brother and others were involved with

to search for treasure in the Philippines.

‐ According to JD, Alan Foringer was an officer

in in a corporation called Nippon Star.

Throughout the 1980s,

Nippon Star's publicly stated purpose

was to search for and recover Japanese treasure

buried in the Philippines.

Among Nippon Star's members,

retired Major General John Singlaub,

one of the founding members of the CIA.

‐ It's not hard to make the connection to me

that the CIA is involved with Nippon Star.

General Singlaub, who was a two‐star major general,

a Green Beret,

and he was one of the fathers of the Special Forces

in that covert, clandestine warfare that exists today.

But he was also a business partner of my brother's.

And I actually met him in October of 1986

when I visited my brother Alan.

He was living in the same house.

‐ Wow, that's crazy.

‐ I visited Alan three times

while he was in the Philippines.

I travelled with my brother

and I did get to see some of those treasure hunting sites.

‐ What else did you see there?

‐ I know that they came across booby traps.

There's markers on every site.

The Japanese left markers so that they could figure out

how to get back to the gold.

The Japanese sealed their treasure vaults

by filling them with very hard concrete.

‐ This is getting really trippy.

I have a team in the Philippines right now

and that's basically what they encountered.

So this is all really compelling stuff,

but do you have documents

or any other proof of CIA involvement?

‐ Ah, come with me. Let me show you some things.

‐ In Virginia, researcher Bingo Minerva

is meeting with JD Foringer, whose brother, Alan,

was allegedly an officer in a company called Nippon Star,

which was reported to be treasure hunting

in the Philippines

and that JD believes had CIA connections.

‐ So, I've got, you know,

quite a bit of information here

that I've collected through the years.

I have an Office of the President of the Philippines

Presidential Task Force,

"Attention Mr. Alan R. Foringer,

"July 17, 1986, Request for Permit to Search,

Excavate and Recover Japanese Buried Treasure."

‐ So this is Nippon Star basically asking

for a treasure‐hunting permit. ‐ Correct.

‐ I'm really trying to understand,

where did the rumor for Nippon Star

being a part of the CIA come about?

‐ Through my research,

I found out about a website

that was written by Mark O'Brian,

which was a pseudonym for Bob Curtis.

‐ Did you say Bob Curtis? ‐ Yes, Bob Curtis.

Yeah, have you heard of him?

‐ I just had a meeting with one of the attorneys

from the Roxas case

and he had some deposition tapes on Bob Curtis.

What did they want from Curtis?

‐ Bob Curtis claimed to have the maps for 175 sites.

‐ Gotcha.

‐ These are a box of tapes recorded by Bob Curtis.

For the meetings, the three days of meetings that they had,

all the principals for Nippon Star

and Bob Curtis.

‐ According to JD, members of Nippon Star

wanted to meet with Robert Curtis in 1987.

At Curtis's request,

the meeting was held in Hong Kong.

‐ So how'd you get these tapes?

‐ Uh, these came from Bob Curtis's house

and he gave them to an investigative journalist

for the "Las Vegas Sun," who entrusted them to me.

Bob stated that he wanted to tape record the conversation

for posterity, or just for the record.

At first, he didn't want to get involved with it all.

Because he was convinced after hearing Singlaub's name

that it was a CIA initiative

and he didn't want to have anything to do with that.

But my brother convinced him to join the group.

‐ Let's give a listen.

‐ Who's talking here?

‐ That's Bob Curtis.

That's my brother, Alan, speaking.

‐ Okay.

‐ Man, that's pretty muffled.

So, your brother's definitely on these tapes then.

‐ He definitely is.

‐ Man, I would love to talk to him.

I mean, it sounds like he was really well connected

with everything that was happening.

‐ Essentially, I think Alan knew too much.

I believe he left Nippon Star

in late '89 or early 1990.

My brother was 37 years old, in good health,

very physically fit, worked out a lot.

He died of a heart attack out

at the Marianne's Doctors Hospital in Manila.

‐ Do you believe there was any foul play there?

‐ I can't say with certainty.

I have suspicions, but I don't...

I can't prove it.

‐ Wow.

According to JD,

there's a lot of evidence there

to support that his brother was, in fact,

treasure hunting in the Philippines.

I'm gonna clean up the audio on these tapes.

Hopefully, I get some more information

out of them. If there is anything there,

I can't wait to tell the guys.

So, a lot of that, to me,

seems really far out there. ‐ Yes.

If you want to know more about the CIA's initiatives

in the Philippines, then I know a guy

that's very familiar with the CIA.

But I believe I could hook you up

with his point of contact information.

‐ Yeah, I'd appreciate that.

I mean, any leads we can get.

‐ Meanwhile, in the Philippines,

John returns to the waterfall

where he recently discovered a marker

that the team believes could be a symbol

pointing to an air vent.

‐ I am extremely excited about this find.

This vent marker is right here.

To me, there would be an air vent

or an air shaft right below it.

So, if I dig one hole here,

I'm hoping that pops into a tunnel.

‐ The team's theory is that the symbol

comes from the Golden Lily,

the secret society believed to be created

by Emperor Hirohito

and run by Imperial princes

who tasked Yamashita with hiding the treasure

and marking the burial sites with their coded symbols.

This symbol may indicate a vertical air shaft

leading down into a tunnel network

behind the waterfall.

‐ Time's a‐wastin'.

Ah, right in my way.

Oh, this damn thing is just right

in the middle of everything.

Can't even get your shovel in there.

Just gotta get this rock outta here.

Otherwise, I'll be fighting with that

for the rest of the day when I need to make a hole.

We're really having a hard time

digging around this big rock here.

If we don't get it outta the way,

we're gonna be here forever.

It really needs to go.

I want to get the backpack drill up here and drill this.

‐ Let's go to work!

‐ In order to remove the boulder blocking their progress,

John plans to use a backpack drill

to bore 8‐inch deep holes into the rock...

which they will then fill

with a non‐explosive demolition agent.

This liquid will cure and expand overnight,

hopefully breaking open the boulder.

‐ I'll just mix it up real good.

It's gonna almost look like a slurry of water.

‐ How long's it gonna take? ‐ 18 to 24 hours.

All right, 24 hours,

the thing should be cracked up in big pieces.

And we'll just take the chunks and chuck them out of the way.

‐ While waiting for a demolition agent

to crack open the boulder blocking their digging,

John returns to base camp

where he and Peter receive an update from Bingo.

‐ Bingo, how are you?

‐ I'm doing good, John.

How you guys doin'?

‐ Doing good.

‐ So, how'd your meeting go with JD?

‐ Well, I found out that JD's brother Alan

may have been working

with Bob Curtis in the Philippines.

‐ Is Bob Curtis still alive?

‐ You know, unfortunately, he passed away a while back.

Otherwise, he would've been a really good source

of information for us.

JD gave me some audio files

that he claims are of his brother Alan,

Bob Curtis, and some other individuals of Nippon Star

and they were discussing Yamashita treasure sites.

The tapes themselves, they were a bit degraded.

But I cleaned them up as best as I could.

I've sent them to you already,

so you should go ahead and take a listen.

‐ We're gonna play it right now, Bingo.

‐ Real interesting.

‐ Do you realize what this means?

‐ That could be our mountain.

‐ Boxes? How many?

‐ This is really interesting stuff.

‐ Back at the waterfall,

John and Manny return to see

if the non‐explosive agent successfully demolished

the boulder blocking their progress.

‐ Ooh, Manny.

‐ Oh, it worked!

‐ It's looking good, Manny. Wow.

Just watch your eyes there.

Just cracked it like it's nobody's business.

Bombs away. First piece gone today.

‐ There it goes!

‐ With the boulder in pieces,

they can now clear it out of the way

to dig down into what they believe

is an air vent leading to a tunnel.

‐ Timber!

‐ With this rock outta the way,

we can resume what we were doing.

Get our ass down there, keep digging.

Yeah, we're gonna get down this vent.

There's just no doubt in my mind.

And we'll get into that entrance.

It's down there. All right, Manny.

Well, we got plenty of room to work in now,

so why don't you hop out?

I'll take first dibs at it and when I get tired,

I'll swap. ‐ All right, call me.

‐ Meanwhile, Brad continues the excavation

above what the team believes

is a tunnel connected to the back door.

‐ She's pretty solid.

I can't get through it.

Peter. If you have some free moments,

could you come down to the excavator, please?

I can't penetrate it.

Everywhere I try and go in,

all I do is get rejected.

You can see where I've been digging against it.

‐ Yeah. ‐ See that?

‐ Have to find another way, guys.

‐ I think I'll move over here,

give it another try, dig another hole.

Maybe we'll get lucky.

‐ We have reason to believe

that on the other side of this bedrock,

there is our tunnel.

But it's gonna be hard for us to get through this slab.

I'm gonna have Brad dig around the edges.

And maybe he can penetrate it from the sides

and we can avoid going directly down

through the center of the slab.

‐ In the Philippines,

John and Manny are continuing their dig

at the waterfall after removing a large rock

that was impeding their progress.

‐ There we go.

‐ There it goes!

‐ They are attempting to reach

what they believe to be a vertical air shaft

running down to a tunnel behind the waterfall.

I think a lot of this dirt

just came over with the rainstorms

and whatever. I don't know.

Now the water on that side

is seeping over to my new side.

Our digging here has pretty much slowed to a crawl.

If this is an air vent and it's flooding,

we may not be able to get in here.

I'm on the rock about two feet down

now in the hole.

And some of the water from the other side

is now seeping across.

It's just turning it into chocolate milk now.

So it's hard for me to see what's down below,

what I'm actually digging into.

And it's gonna come to a point

where I'm not sure how much more we can dig here.

The bottom of the hole is filling up.

If this was a vent, this is not gonna be the way

we're gonna be able to get in.

This is trickier than we thought.

We may have to rethink our whole strategy.

We may not be able to get in this way.

I think we're at the limit of what we can do here.

‐ Meanwhile, Brad is trying to dig

around a section of rock he encountered

while excavating the area by the back door,

attempting to reach the void space

the team believes is 40 feet below the surface.

‐ I can't get around it.

Everywhere I try and dig, rock hard.

‐ That's some hell of a stone, whatever it is.

That's really solid.

‐ I think we've come to an impasse.

I don't see it happenin'!

‐ After days of digging and repositioning

around the void's location,

the team appears to be unable

to reach the potential tunnel through this site.

‐ You're just gonna tear up that excavator.

‐ I know.

‐ I don't think it's gonna happen.

‐ No.

‐ I can't move it, I can't dig it,

I can't dig around it.

‐ You think we can get through

maybe using a jackhammer?

‐ It'll have to be the jackhammer of God.

‐ Well, I'm not sure if we can get a permit

for something like that.

This is like an impossible task for us to do here.

We're not gonna be able to do that.

‐ What do you wanna do?

‐ I think we should find another way

how to get into the back door,

other than going straight down here.

This is, uh, this is beyond our means.

We can't do this.

‐ Unable to dig any farther,

Peter heads back to base camp

to regroup with John and Martin.

‐ Well, guys, this is what we were afraid of.

The area just above the back door

is practically impossible to get through.

It's a solid mess up there.

So if you have any other ideas,

now's the time to bring it up.

‐ Well, explosives are out,

can't use those here.

Maybe we can get hydraulic jackhammer for the excavator.
