(guitar music) (feet clomping)

- [Announcer] Sound speed.

A mark. (group laughing)

And board on scene.

(announcer speaks faintly)

B mark.

- Camera's set - Band's set.

- [Announcer] We're recording.

- [Crew Person] Do we have all full stage, Hans?

- [Announcer] Okay, cut.

Standby and,

(clock ticking)

- It is time.

(groovy music) (latch clicking)

(bell ringing) (door creaking)

And I'd like you to meet her.

- In Ankara, I once met a magician

and his show was unlike anything I'd ever seen.

Such tricks, such incredible imagination.

And the audience clapped like

we had seen the resurrection itself.

And the next night,

he was at the bar at my hotel.

And he sat with his cards and his drink,

and I should have left him alone,

but I couldn't.

(cards shuffling)

- Normal deck?

Please.

- [Miss Flower] How do you come up with such tricks?

- A magician never reveals his secrets.

But lemme tell you this,

I spent my life around extraordinary things,

extraordinary places, extraordinary people.

(groovy music continues)

Are you extraordinary, Miss Flower?

- Are we extraordinary, Miss Flower?

(dramatic music)

- [Narrator] When was the last time you received a letter?

An actual handwritten letter,

maybe from a friend, maybe from a lover

where there's their sent and the ink bleeding onto the page?

A personal, private, permanent connection

with another human being.

Letters are more than just words on a page.

They're time capsules filled with fears, dreams,

laughter and tears.

They're souvenirs of who we were and who we hoped we'd be.

After Miss Geraldine Flower passed away,

her daughter found a box filled with hundreds of letters.

It is a real treasure trove.

These letters then made their way into the hands

of Miss Emiliana Tarini

and more importantly, into her imagination.

(groovy music continues)

- To be honest, I always know when a song is waiting for me.

It hangs over me,

right here just out of reach like a spectre.

But sometimes you're scrambling around

trying to feel something and you get kind of desperate.

You are waiting for something to ignite

and burn a hole through

and lead you right to the end

to commit, to obsess.

This box of letters did that to me.

- [Miss Flower] I can see you think you know me better now.

- We all know you now.

I mean, you were here for all to see.

- What did you find?

- "And so we shall meet in December,

where the pines rise

and there, we shall marry." - Which we didn't.

- Well, poor boy.

"I am in withdrawal from you.

I shake like a Prague junkie." (Miss Flower laughs)

- "Like a Prague junkie," really?

- Ah.

This the,

"The light here is dim and low gold."

- Was he, - "The only illumination

is the memory of your hands on my-"

- Enough?

I was hooked.

I mean, there's enough love in these letters

to fulfil a person for 100 years.

- Come on. They're just letters.

- Letters open people up in ways that

nothing else really does.

- Well, when I read them,

I feel like I'm living your life.

There's mystery, excitement,

the men, the obsessions.

And the first letter I picked up was "Miss Flower,"

what we call "Miss Flower" now.

And reading that letter was exhilarating

'cause it was kind of this 60, sexy, funny,

witty, passionate and that was the letter,

before I read any others, that ignited this idea that

I wanted to go to the studio and write a song from it.

- "As the day dawns dark and windy,

with a hint of a splash or a shower,

there is only one thing on my mind,

a warm kiss with Geraldine Flower.

Edgy.

It may not be Shelly, Keat or Byron,

but it's not bad for so early in the morning.

You are, I imagine, still in bed.

So I sit here and contemplate

how our last night, a night to remember.

The chemistry was wonderful.

Even Cockcroft and Walton splitting the atom

does not compare.

There are so many images

I can't decide which one I will enjoy the most.

Will it be the gaze of your eyes across the table

or your unique way of polishing Joni Mitchell

before playing her?

I've just finished mowing the lawn.

It remained a labour less of love than necessity.

As I swept backwards and forwards

striping my way from one border to the next,

I needed a little stimulation to keep me going.

And so I thought of you.

I imagined you as so many things

and then as a wine.

How would such a wine taste?

From where would it come?

I consulted the world Atlas of wine

and it told me Australian wine is hot right now.

That sounded promising as there's

certainly a warmth running through your veins.

So please Miss Flower, be gentle with me.

Let me take a few delicate sips to start with

before I drain my glass dry.

I look forward to our tasting.

- Let us begin with the question,

who is Miss Geraldine Flower?

Born in 1947 to parents who met in Britain during the war

but came from opposite sides of the world.

Her father, Jack, was in the Air Force

and came from Australia.

Her mother Audrey was in the Wharf,

and came from Dublin, Ireland.

Their three children, Paddy, Geraldine and Mona

grew up in Newcastle and Sydney, Australia.

Geraldine attended Abbotsleigh, a progressive girls school.

The Headmistress, Betty Archdale,

was an extraordinary woman.

During the war, Archie headed a team

of female code breakers.

She captained an all women's cricket team.

And at Abbotsleigh, she reformed discipline

and introduced sex education.

Miss Archdale provided a written reference for Geraldine.

(dramatic music)

"To whom it may concern.

Geraldine Flower has been at Abbotsleigh since 1960.

Geraldine is an intelligent girl.

She passed the intermediate in 1962

and is sitting for the leaving this year.

Geraldine has great vivacity in boys.

She's still lacking in self-control,

but when she learns to concentrate,

she'd do very well indeed.

Geraldine is charming and friendly

and gets on well with everyone.

Your sincerely, Ms. Archdale, Headmistress."

at the Australian Broadcasting Commission,

then at the Macquarie Broadcasting Service

where she earned a glowing reference.

And it seemed as if I was going to have

to do the whole bit on my own.

And at first, I refused to think about it.

And then as it got closer and closer

to my court appearance, I was gonna go right out of my mind.

All I wanted to do was hit my head against the wall

just because I was so boggled

every time I thought about what I was gonna say,

and even if I was able to speak.

Because on the night that I was arrested

and taken down to Chelsea Police Station,

I was so frightened.

I couldn't even get my name out.

So on Sunday night I sat down

and I tried to think rationally

and decided that no matter what,

regardless of the cost,

I must get myself a solicitor.

And I would phone you to see whether or not

you could lend me something to ease the problem.

The money you've lend me is such a good help.

I have 30 days to pay the fine,

but I also owe the flat agency 20 pounds

and 20 pounds for the month's rent due tomorrow,

and an overdraft,

as well as various clothes of mine,

and various dry cleaners all over London

that I can't afford to get out. (chuckles)

Oh, plus 10 pounds on the telephone

and 15 pounds to the solicitor.

It's all been so costly.

I've been in a complete state, I can't tell you.

Plus I'm still owning up about Reggie.

And John, Reggie's best friend, is all hung up about me.

And back in the flat, Ruby is close to a nervous breakdown,

crying, moaning, tearing at her hair all the time

'cause she's hung up about this friend of mine, Danny.

Life is just so bloody complicated.

Jesus, it's all too much.

London is too much,

and I would love to wander a bit.

My feet are so itchy."

- I feel I should clarify a few things

about that letter to my brother.

It's a crazy stupid story.

I was sharing a house with my girlfriend and these two guys.

And one of them was pushing hash

and he gave me some Turkish,

which he said was too nice to sell.

I've never been that into it.

So I've put it in my handbag, forgot about it.

Oh God, they thought we were the straightest birds ever.

We moved out soon afterwards.

And moonlight lit.

(lighter flicking) (gentle music)

And one night, I was working late

and I had to trek down to the 24 hour post office

in Trafalgar Square.

I was completely plasmarized.

So this guy helped me stick all the stamps on.

He asked me to have a drink with him

and I thought, "Well,

yeah, he's quite nice looking,

very well mannered."

And afterwards he said,

would I mind if he saw me home as he had nothing to do.

So we go back flat and I gave him some coffee

and he starts telling me all about hash

as though he is the biggest head in the scene.

And I tell him about the stuff that I've been given

just by way of conversation.

And he reckons that we ought to roll a joint then and there.

But I refused.

There was something that made me wary of him.

So I told him straight that he must be gone.

The next day he rings up and he invites me out to lunch

and I say, "No, I can't make it."

Come Sunday, the doorbell goes

and it's this bloody bloke.

So we have some coffee and talk and then,

then things get kind of paranoid

and he tries to race me off.

And I tell him, "No, it's just not on."

And he gets quite vicious and sarcastic.

Come Monday, he rings me and says, I've gone off him.

And I said, "Look, I was never on you."

He calls me a bloody provincial bitch

and slams the receiver down.

That night, when I got home from work,

there were these three CID detectives waiting.

They take my handbag, find the hash and arrest me.

I'm taken off to Chelsea Police Station shaking all over.

I needed to borrow money

because the bloody magistrate refused me legal aid.

My solicitor was great and told my boss,

who's quite an impressive guy,

and said he would testify for me

and wouldn't hear of me being deported,

which was my big fear.

- Letters weren't the only thing that we found in that box.

Exhibit A.

- [Miss Flower] That's my song from Harold.

We met when I was working

for an in-flight magazine in the Caribbean.
