My team and I are
building on one giant cliff

in the Atlantic ocean.

They don't call it
the rock for nothing!

We fight the elements
year-round to get the job done.

It might be tough for
some, but not for us.

Because when this is
your view, it's worth it.

(Paul): What do
we got this morning?

- This morning we got a
lot on the go. Many jobs.

We take it all on, you know,
from old, new. Whatever it is.

So today, we're
going to petty harbour,

we're trying to fill in
inside the foundation.

We're building like, a chimbley
chase on rennie's mill road.

Geez and the list goes on.

Sun is shining though,
I got my shorts on! Mint.

Vehicles. Worst investment
you can ever have.

(Laughing) The rust fleet!

With a lot of jobs and
a lot of people moving,

you need a lot of vehicles.
My fleet is getting a little

bit big. Means a
lot of maintenance.

Uh-oh. I got a
break light gone too.

Oh look, more maintenance.

You know, when you got
something broken or if you got a spot

that you need to be fixed
so, I went and got a sheet

of metal, welded it on... done.

But hey,

you don't get a job by
having a truck looking pretty.

(Laughing)

flip 'er on the turns!

- I won't.

- As my crew heads
out across the avalon,

I'm staying behind in brigus
to meet some new clients,

the buttons!

Their home is a
showstopper on the harbour.

And we're getting ready
to build a piece on the side

which needs to fit perfectly.

So, I'm here to meet
Wayne and Linda to go over

to finer details before we
bring in and start digging.

What a beautiful spring day.
- I know.

- Gorgeous!
- So, we're gonna...

Put a new add-on. For your
main bedroom, main bath.

- Yeah.
- On the main floor.

- On the main floor! No stairs.

- Yeah.

(Randy): The house has
been her for about 20 years.

Inside, it's in great shape,

but they wanted to
do a bit of updating.

So we're turning
the front entrance

into a great sitting
area for Linda to enjoy

a cup of tea and take in
the views of the harbour.

In the living
room, the fireplace

is being converted to propane,

and we're creating
a feature wall

with new stone
and floating shelves.

The whole main floor will
get a fresh coat of paint.

But the biggest transformation
is the new addition.

This is gonna be
their new bedroom

with loads of windows
to enjoy the view.

The new bathroom will
have a large soaker tub

and a custom shower.

This is a perfect retreat
they want on the main floor

and making it look like
it's always been there,

that's what we wanted to do.

This is gonna be the big Reno.

- Yes.
- We're gonna have a big

en suite and a big closet.

- Well, yeah. Big, big. Yeah.
- Big, big!

(Laughing)

It looks amazing
from the outside,

so definitely highlight
the way they got

that little bump up, the peak.

Make the outside
kind of blend in

and make it not look like
an add-on. That's the key.

- That's the key, yeah.
- Especially this one.

It's kind of unique to the area.

The boats, that's the first
thing they're gonna see coming

into the harbour. So, we gotta
make sure we make it unique

and blend well with the
house you already have.

- Yeah. Perfect.

- Timeline for us is
like two or three months,

you know, might
be a little bit longer,

might be a little bit faster,
depending on how fast

we can get materials.

The budget for this
place is going to be

like a $140,000.

Beautiful spring, so
we'll get the foundation in,

then we can start
actually building up.

Then you got a new bedroom.

(Chuckling)
- Sounds great!

- So, I'll go get the
excavator and get started

before we get winter.
- Great.

- Don't want to be building
in the winter. Too cold!

(Upbeat music)

Today, we're here at the buttons

getting ready to dig
for that new addition.

So I got pat, the
excavating guy,

coming along, getting
ready to go digging.

Hopefully we don't hit
nothing. Fingers crossed.

This is the Mark-out
for the new addition.

Right here is going
to be a bedroom.

We're actually going to put
a washroom in this corner.

Then we're gonna
break right in through here

next that window,
'cause that's going,

to move out the new
washroom. Done!

We do need a foundation,
something solid to build

this house on. So that's
why we got to dig four feet.

Plus, to keep it
below the frost.

The only thing is there's a
septic tank there somewhere.

So yeah, it's a little
bit nerve-wracking.

We don't want to hit anything!

- So, what is the plan?
- I got it all marked out,

18 by 20.

The only thing is
we got a septic here.

The septic tank is
supposed to be back there.

We're not going to hit
it, but the field runs out.

- And what are you
going to do with that?

When Randy calls me,
I don't always pick up

because this is the sort
of thing he asks me to do.

But, at the end of the
day he does pay me so uh,

that's a great
motivator in life.

So, am I right in saying
there's multiple lines here?

- There's definitely multiple
but I don't know how far out.

- Yeah. So, I mean, every
foot of pipe we tear up,

we've got to put back.
- Oh yeah.

- And I guess that
tree has gotta stay.

So we gotta work around that.

It always gets good with
you, Randy, doesn't it?

(Laughing)

- If it was easy, everybody
would want to do it.

- Randy is challenging me
today, but it's a nice sunny day.

So, you got to look
at it on a Monday

with a smile on your face

and hope it goes
well from there.

There's nobody actively
living here every day, is there?

This just gets

I'll go get equipment moving.

The history is when
Randy was a little boy,

I was doing work
for his grandfather,

his dad, and his uncle.

And then Randy comes along

and he makes the
company even bigger

and he keeps me even busier.

- Stuff is movin'!

- My other connection
is... One of Randy's

key employees happens
to be my nephew.

Randy says, "pat, have
you got anybody down there

that works for you that
wants more money?"

And I said, "Randy, I told you.

You can't raid my people!"

But anyway, I told
them about Paul.

I think they got together,
and Randy and Paul

have been working pretty well,

it seems to me, since then.

(Upbeat music)

- Not good!

So, there it goes.

(Upbeat music)

(Randy): Foundation at
the button's, out in brigus.

It's a really (bleep)
Situation now.

We hit that septic tank.

It's actually where we're
gonna do the add-on.

Unfortunately, we can't build
a wall over the septic tank.

So, that tank
gotta be lifted up,

moved outside the foundation,
and hooked up again.

Lot of work! One day
job turned two days.

It's the Monday blues!

(Upbeat music)

(Randy): Turned out looking
like it was gonna be bad.

You know, we hit a
little bit of a problem.

Pat's gone to get a new tank.

So, by the end of the day,

hole dug out, new tank in,

win-win! Foundation tomorrow.

So bad turned into good.

(Upbeat music)

With me tied up in brigus,
Paul's down in petty harbour.

- Petty harbour's a
nice little fishing village.

You got a lot of
scenery and you can see

the little fishing boats
as they go in and out

throughout the day.

(Randy): We're saving
a biscuit box house

that's over 100 years old.

Some think we should have
torn it down and started over.

But that's not what we
do. We love a challenge,

and this is definitely
a challenge!

(Paul): Al's outside.
He's doing the last little bit

of prep work because
we got the mini-mini here,

and I just picked up our
heavy-duty plate compacter.

(Randy): We're building an
addition for a new mudroom,

living room, laundry
and a washroom.

The original main floor

will have an open-concept
kitchen and dining room

with a large island
that'll have a beer tap

for Liam, the
brew-master homeowner!

Can't wait for this
one to be finished!

- There you go! Opened up.

- With the steel beams in place

we're ready for a special
feature for this open

concept design.

We got to pour a concrete floor,

which is going to be
finished. There's nothing going

over top of it. No
hardwood, no finishing.

This concrete floor is
going to be the finish.

In order to do that,

we gotta fill inside the
foundation with rock

starting with the bigger
stones on the bottom,

then topping it off
with some gravel.

But before the
concrete is poured,

we're adding in-floor
heat which is a perfect way

to warm up the
house and your feet!

We'll be adding 30
tons of rock and stone,

and it has to be fully
compressed using

a plate compacter.

(Motor starting)

We gotta tamp it down.
Every time that you put

stone down. We gotta tamp it,

make sure it's good and solid.

Especially when you're
pouring concrete on top of it.

This is gonna take
a few days to finish,

but it'll be worth
it in the end.

Duane, the engineer,
is here to sign off

on the process, and
ensure the foundation

is rock solid and
ready for concrete.

- I'm looking at,
say, at least two lifts

to get up to the rough grade
to get to our stone level.

(Duane): Right on. My
only real concern there

is if there's bedrock.
If this stuff is poking up

into our floor slab area
or into the granulars

underneath the slab, then
that's gonna be an issue.

You might need to get a
buster in to chop that down.

- Hammer it down.
- Or, yeah.

- Haven't hit bedrock yet!

That one there just
turned out to be a Boulder.

Well, not really a Boulder but
for this size machine maybe.

It's just me and the mini,

and just trying
to get things done

to keep ahead of the game.

My uncle owns an
excavation company.

So, when I was little and
used to go up to my nan's house

on a Sunday, my uncle's
house was right next door,

so I'd always have to
run next door and see

what uncle pat was at.
I'd spend a full afternoon

in there, in my glee,

because I got to operate
the backhoe all day.

And he's probably
thinking to himself,

"man, that's good
cheap labour." (Laughing)

(Randy): Back in St.
John's at the Robbins'

century-year-old home,

we battled through
many setbacks.

- I don't think there's
very much holding that up.

- Man, oh man, oh man.

This was our biggest hurdle,
trying to get this floor fixed.

But look at it. It looks
like a brand-new kitchen.

We're over the
foundation hump now.

The owners' daughter
Katie starts music school

in a few weeks, and that's
when they're all moving back in.

It's been a huge job.

We fixed up both
washrooms upstairs,

and downstairs,

we're flipping two major rooms.

The old kitchen was
torn out to make room

for Katie's new music
room and lounge area,

with plenty of space
for a grand piano.

The old living room
is now their big,

new, open-concept
kitchen and dining area.

We added a lot of new
plumbing and electrical

for the kitchen, because
there's all new appliances,

lighting, large island
for plenty of prep

and hanging out.

And we're putting a
sink in the ole chimbley.

It's gonna be a
catty looking kitchen.

Let's bring on the insulation.

(Upbeat music)

The insulation we're
using is a spray foam.

It doesn't take long to
do, which is a good thing.

Because Paul's ready
to prep the new kitchen

for some major installs.

- We got a lot of patching
to do. We want to try

and get this wrapped
up today, because plaster

is coming on Monday.

(Randy): I love the
feelin' when we can finally

move forward on a job.

And it's a Friday, even better.

This is why we
pick the locations

where we work. Deadly feeds

means good job.

Because if the job
goes bad, food don't!

Friday feeds are the
best, but getting the job

back on track is even better.

(Randy): Up in
brigus the addition

on the button's house
is well underway.

We're building a new
main-floor bedroom and bathroom

that'll have loads of
light and views of the bay.

We dug down below the
frost lin for the foundation

and our concrete
footings are in.

Next up, prep for
the foundation walls.

(Beeping)

- You got a battery, pat?

So, today I'm here
at Dr. Button's.

We're giving my uncle
and his crew a hand there

to get the icf put together.

Get it all set up so
that it's ready for pour.

You say 43 and
three quarters, Jim?

- Yes, sir.

- Icf forms are
insulated concrete forms.

The foam acts as your
form to hold cement in.

And it also doubles as
your future insulation.

We're getting the basement
poured and we're insulating

all at one time!

Grab a big yaffle
of form spreaders,

and we'll use that
for tying her together!

- Okay.

- Working with my uncle's
like a blast from the past!

(Laughing)

- Paul worked for
me for many years,

right out of...

Well, even before you had
graduated from high school,

I guess?
- Forget that.

You had me back
in middle school at it.

(Laughing)

- Look at all the
money you made!

He's a hard worker
and he's a great guy,

so I'm very proud.

(Folk music)

(Paul): I started off right
at the bottom from stripping

and cleaning the
panels, to working up

until I built my own
career around carpentry,

and taught me a lot
of well-rounded skills,

and you know, some
of them I use today,

and uh, some of them
I kind of try to forget

because I don't want
to go back there! Haha!

(Upbeat music)

- Okay, I have to
cut it short, Paul,

and go get the
rest of the material.

- Yeah. Next thing,
we'll be waiting on you.

- Be just like back
in the old times

when you'd drop

it's time to get a handle on
the main floor design details.

What do you think?
- Wow. This looks great.

- Yeah. So nice.

- Last week, me, Sam and Sasha

wrapped up the
bathroom finishes.

- This really came
together really nice.

- Isn't it fun?
- Fun space, hey?

(Randy): So now, we're
excited, but feeling the pressure

to get the main floor
looking just as good.

It took a lot to get here.
We ran into so many issues.

- Yeah.
- But we still got a long

way to go.

- Super excited about
this project. This house

is a huge transformation.

There's a lot going on.
- Yeah, I can't wait

to see ros' face in the end.
- Yeah.

- I love this kitchen, though.

The fact that they're
using the whole space

is amazing to me.
In newfoundland,

where do we spend
all of our time?

- In the kitchen.

- The owner ros loves colour.

Lots of colour.
- So, we're gonna do it.

She likes blue. We're
not afraid of blue.

- So, let's just do
the kitchen blue.

Let's do all the cabinetry
blue. So, we'll break it up

with a green island,
but we'll also bring in

some of that
creamy, buttery yellow

that will really complement
those colours really nicely.

- Oh, okay.

- When you mix
colours, it's all about

how you play them
off of each other.

So, by mixing blue and
green, it's totally fine.

It just has to be the right
blue with the right green.

And then we incorporate
that green again,

and we incorporate
that blue again.

So, when you actually
see our decor pieces,

you'll see that colour
come back through.

- So, what we're gonna do
here is we're actually gonna

put in some bench seating.
It's gonna be a great space

for the whole family
to come together.

It's gonna be a great feel.

- Sounds like a
whole lotta work.

- I know!
- Just adding it

to your list, Randy!
- Yeah, I know.

Let's see what door
number three got to offer me.

Let's drag ourselves over there.

- Well, this is not
as much work.

This is actually gonna
be Katie's classroom.

She's a beautiful musician,
she loves to play piano.

So, she's going
to play piano here,

and we're gonna do a nice
little seating area over here

for ros and the family to watch.

So, we're actually gonna
keep the stone wall.

The clients had
it here originally.

It's something they love
and they want to incorporate,

but it's a little cool. But
you don't have to rip out

your stone. You can
change it by your furniture,

you can change it by your
paint. So, just by adding

in some softer tones
and some softer pieces,

that'll really change
the feel of the space.

- What a cool
space it's gonna be!

- So, this one's pretty good.
- Yeah!

- I'm gonna go brief

couple of weeks away

before the family

There's still a lot of
construction to be done

and design details to deal with

it's raining cats and
dogs. Like, it's pouring.

And the beauty thing is,
if you got an inside job,

you jump over there
when it's a rainy day.

That's the breaks
of being a contractor,

especially here in newfoundland

can go outside again.

So, we gotta put subfloor down.

It'll give extra strength,
but also will make the floor

nice and flat.

It's an old house, so
nothing's really level.

Nothing is flat.

But we're going to
make it flat by putting

another subfloor. We
can make that happen

before we put down
the finished floor.

You're screwin' it
every four inches,

just because you don't
want a squeak. So yeah,

there's a whole lotta screws.

Think about it. That's
like a thousand screws.

(Randy): Jason's at a little
bit tangly of a job today.

He's puttin' down
floor, but it's just not

your normal strips.

It's like 32 inches
by 32 inches.

Big squares.

It's gonna look amazing.

perfect, so me and my crew

by moving ahead

on the button's house addition.

this floor framed up.

By the end of the day
today, it'll be all done.

It's gonna be an adjustment
for him, that's for sure.

installed and sheeted over,

When we're framing
and everbody's together,

it's so many things
you can be doing.

One could be nailing up a
wall. One could be sheeting.

One could be
marking out the wood.

- Plus, you need a
full team here to have

all the strength
to lift the big ones.

But it's not just our muscles
needed to frame up the addition

it's our brain power too.

The addition is 18 by 22.

sheet this on the ground

and lift it up as
a complete unit

than it is to try and
scaffold up and hang off

and put it together in place.

We got a small

My kids are on summer
holidays now from school

and my husband's home

kids, we love to do.

Very rarely do you go
out and not get your fish

out in brigus. It's
a big spot for fish.

A lot of boats actually
come towards brigus

to do their fishing. So, any day

you're on the water in brigus,
it's usually a big success.

ready to frame a roof

and you get to see you

day, and we're heading

around the bay to petty harbour
to prep the inside of the house

for the concrete floor,
which means machinery,

my favourite part of the job.

Today we're here. Me
and Paul is trying to get this

all filled in, ready
for the concrete.

So, the game plan is
kind of like the big stone.

Paul will be inside
with the mini.

I'll be in the skidster.
I'll pick up the small dirt,

dump it in through the
window. He'll spread it out.

Think she'll fit?

- Don't you like
living dangerous?

So, I measured the
skidster earlier this morning

and I know that it's a fathom.

A fathom is the distance
between a grown man's arms.

Tip to tip of the fingers,
so when you go like that.

It's approximately 6 feet,
so pretty much, you know,

it's less than what
my arm span is,

so if my arm span
will fit through,

I knew that it'd fit.

It's a newfoundland
way of measuring,

or maybe it's a fishing
way of measuring.

I'm not quite sure. I always
heard dad talk about it

growing up where dad
fished and grandfather,

and everything else.

Ah, a little tight, but
that'll be best kind.

(Upbeat music)

So, we're filling up with stone
because this concrete floor

is gonna be the finishing.

any cracks, so it gotta
be good and solid.

Which is why we're
using the big stone.

just rough bucketing

the material in. So, you know,

it's not as precise as inside,

trying to get everything on
grade, and everything level,

and everything smooth.

I just don't know
if it's a sensor

for low fuelling or not.

- We wore out the rental.

She won't make
nothing, will she?

- Well, she wasn't cranking.

So, I just shut the mini off
there, and she won't restart

so, I'm just going over
the obvious there now.

Just making sure it's not a
sensor or something stupid.

- Argh. It ain't gonna work.

Mini is dead in the water.

You know, it's a
rental, so we really can't

pick at it too
much. If it was ours,

we'd kind of probably
scrap it right here.

Right now. But it's
not ours to do that so,

call the shop!

We can take turns.

That's a lot of digging.

Someone's gonna
love a shovel and a rake.

(Upbeat music)

(Randy): In St. John's
at the Robbins' house,

things are taking shape.

Looking pretty good.
Dance floor all ready

in the speakeasy.
Jason did a nice job

laying it all out
through, so, looking mint.

Now we just gotta cover it
before the painters come.

Ros, the homeowner,
loves colour,

so we're painting
the original trim

and custom bead
board in the kitchen

a vintage blue.

And the grand staircase
is getting a lick of paint

to complement
the new blue walls.

With the painting done,

we're truly in the
home stretch now.

The custom kitchen is going in.

It'll have a ton of storage,
including a bar cabinet.

It's the same blue
colour that ros loves.

But the big feature
is the new copper sink

going into the old chimbley.

It's an idea that I thought
would look super cool.

And hey, it fits!

And looks mint.

(Upbeat music)

I'm gonna take
the floating shelves

and put them in
the back of my truck.

- We needs all the muscle
we can get. This is old.

And old means expensive.
- Yeah.

All packed up and ready
to go. Another long day.

Getting close on this one.

We're at the
final, final touches.

We gotta get roslyn and
the whole family back in.

They've been gone
for months now,

so I got the whole team on deck

we gotta finish
all the built-ins,

finish all the trim.
Hopefully they'll like it,

because with what
we started with

and what it is now,
been a long way coming.

It's taken almost four months
and a budget of $240,000

to update this old
newfoundland home

for the Robbins' family.

And we're almost done.

In the new music room,
Katie's grand piano

already looks right at home.

Perfect!

But there's more
heavy lifting to do.

- Ready?
- Ready.

- The original
radiator's been painted,

and the colour works perfectly

with the new look of the house.

We built this all in the shop.

Paul is gonna finish
all the assembly of it.

(Paul): A little bit of cutting
in there now to get that in.

- And then ready to
put a cushion there.

Dining room table.
Bring on the feed.

Mint.

You know what? We're
getting really close,

but I'm still concerned.
We got a big stove

that we gotta try to fit in
through that small little door.

The cabinets gotta be done,
the countertops gotta be done.

The heater's gotta be installed.

And all of that,
we still gotta have

the finishing touches.
We gotta fluff them pillows!

- This was a huge,
huge project for us to do.

It's a very special
home in St. John's.

- We wanna try and
keep as much character

as we can in this home.

It brings you back to
those old country kitchens,

but with a little bit of
a modern twist to it.

- People are always
nervous that you can't just add

different pieces together.
It's completely fine to mix.

It's all about the way
you do it. So in here,

we have the copper on the sink,

and then we have the
brass on the faucets,

and the combination is
actually beautiful together.

It gives you the warmth,
it gives you a charm.

Everything in this house
is gonna have so many

little details. I feel like ros
is just gonna walk around

for a good hour.

- It's gonna be like screams
and tears and excitement!

- We're hoping for tears.
- Yeah.

They're gonna be
just blown away.

- Feeling anxious.
It's all done.

So, fingers crossed,
they're gonna love it.

(Roslyn gasping)
- Oh my...

(Upbeat music)

- Feeling anxious.
Can't wait for roslyn

and the whole family to come in.

When you come to an end,
it's always a good feeling.

Especially what we started with,

finding that foundation issue,

so to be able to
have it all done,

bring the homeowners
in, feels good.

This is gonna be the first
time they're gonna see it.

The whole summer they
were gone. So, finger's crossed

they're gonna love it.

You know, we've been
gone away and haven't

beautiful dove energy,

kind of ties in the colours
that you're doing here.

in old houses

always had something on them.

The biggest surprise
honestly for me

is the music room. Just
because it's kind of like

my own little space
that I get now.

I just, I can't
explain it into words

how much I appreciate it.

I'm never leaving this room.

was the old kitchen.

Stove was right where you
are, took it down and exposed

that chimbley.
- For an old chimbley

that we couldn't see,
now we got an exposed

brick chimbley. (Roslyn):

It was a concern that the piano
was going to be almost too much

for this room, but I
think it's beautiful.

- No, it's perfect.

- Sounds good here.

was walking into the kitchen

and seeing the nice copper,
and the stone, and the wood.

It's absolutely gorgeous.

would have ever been
able to do that for us.

It's unbelievable.

Definitely feels good
looking back on it.

You know, where we started,
bringing in the excavator,

ripping everything up,
it was a head scratcher.

We didn't know
which way to turn.

Here was a house
that was sinking,

but you never even tell that
we actually ripped up the floor,

put a new foundation
underneath it.

It all looks like the house
was the original house

a hundred years ago,
other than with some

new stuff added.

- Wow. It's unbelievable, Randy.

It's really unbelievable.
- Yeah.

- I'm glad you love the kitchen.

Let's bring everybody in,

break out the glasses,

It's a great feeling
now that it's all done,

because I don't know if
it would rank as the most

challenging job I've done,
but it's definitely up there.

Anyway, they're gonna
throw us one hell of a party

and we're here to
celebrate with them!

(Excited shouting)

and it seemed like
there was no end,

we spent a lot of late nights

trying to get this project
on time and on budget.

But it don't scare us away.
That's what the team love.

We'll be on another project,
tearing up someone else's floor.

from having an
excavator in this floor.

I know you left as soon as
we brought the excavator in.

Gone the whole summer,
didn't want to see it. But hey,

the floor is solid
now, so let's try it out.
