Yeah weird, right? That's why I called.

(birds chirping)

Well, maybe he crawled to the creek and fell in.

Why crawl to the creek?

Why not to the road to get help?

Hm, and if he crawled, where are the hand prints?

Those do look like his boot prints, though.

[Daniel] Yeah.

And, Gavin Murphy.

Local, 33 years old.

Okay.

- So he's getting married. - Yep.

In about 40 minutes.

Yeah no, I couldn't believe it

when I heard about your breakup.

Heart went out.

Thanks, Frodo.

I mean, went right out,

like out of my chest and hovered there

like a hovering heart-shaped hovercraft.

Beth seemed like the one, right?

She did.

Although, you obviously thought that before.

Yeah, that's true.

Easy mistake to make once, or even twice,

or I mean, three or four times in your case,

How much we've got in common.

I've never really given it much thought.

Everybody's freaking out

Sorry to interrupt.

I'm DSS Mike Sheperd from the Brokenwood CIB.

And what the hell do you want?

I'm afraid I have some bad news.

There was a motorcycle accident out near Bushwell's Rise.

The rider was found deceased,

and is understood to be Gavin Murphy.

(people gasping) (gentle music)

I'm very sorry for your loss.

It's all right, Debbie, it's all right.

(Debbie sobbing)

(cameras clicking) (truck beeping)

It's at least a 50 meter crawl, or fall, or walk.

You never flew that far off your bike.

Thankfully, no.

A man encased in black leather.

It often evokes strong feelings of-

The Village People?

Of invincibility, or intrigue.

And when they put their full face helmet on,

there is so much mystique.

Who knows what lies beneath?

Well, I guess you're about to find out.

While you're at it, it'd be good to know

how much mobility he'd have after the crash.

Sadly, though, when he's on a slab,

I will have to cut through this soft, expensive leather.

The suit will be ruined.

Well, needs must.

Perhaps if the family don't want it,

you can turn it into cushions for your new house.

- Like, leather cushions? - Yes.

Yeah, no that's a nice idea, Gina,

but I'm actually going for more of a corduroy look.

Corduroy?

I see, very safe.

Where is Mike?

He is actually at a wedding.

[Gina] Oh my god, he's back together with Beth?

No.

She broke his heart, then walks him down the aisle.

This is the behavior of a minx.

Not his wedding, a wedding, the victim's wedding.

Letting the guests know that he won't be attending.

That's a relief.

- Excuse me. - No.

(blues music) (camera clicking)

- Andy. - Hey.

Serious crash guys said it was okay to move?

Yeah, go for it.

You want it down the station?

Yeah, around the back so the ESI guys can take a look.

[Andy] Sure thing.

(birds chirping)

Bloody tragedy, this.

Breaks my heart.

[Daniel] Oh yeah, how so?

I worked for Gavin's older brother, Jason.

He'll be a mess, mate.

I was supposed to be at the wedding, but I still had to stay on call, and

now I'm here carting away his death trap.

Well, clearly he was a man in love.

Named his bike after his fiancee.

Yeah, nah.

That's not Gav's wife.

It's not?

I don't know about you, but I don't know any self-respecting bloke

that would call his bike Debbie, let alone pink lettering.

Dead stall.

Right, so this is Debbie's bike.

Yeah, man.

Must've taken it for a spin.

That's what I'm saying, it's bloody tragic.

Okay, so Gavin Murphy, local mechanic and bike enthusiast.

Loses control of his bike, and crashes.

Except it was his fiancee Debbie's bike.

Correct, and why he would lose control

on a straight road in good conditions is curious.

Mechanical failure?

Yeah, maybe.

But it's a modern bike.

At first glance, it was well looked after.

CS crash unit will take a few days to assess that.

Okay, well we do know a passing motorist

called the crash in.

Akin was first on the scene,

and discovered the body lying facedown in the stream.

(ominous music)

There were drag marks between the crash site,

and the stream.

The imprints confirmed there were two sets of boot prints.

One was Akin's.

The other matches Gavin.

Yeah, we think someone found Gavin injured

and dragged him into the creek.

Without leaving prints?

Well, we have to consider the possibility.

Could this someone have been on the bike with him?

Well, it's hard to imagine anyone having the capacity

to drag anything after they'd been involved in that crash.

The passing motorist?

[Kristin] An elderly woman, never left her car.

[Mike] Has Gina estimated a time of death?

Um, no, yep she did.

Could you hazard a guess on time of death?

Think about what you are saying.

Guessing is hazardous.

Right, but Mike would like to know

the time of death ASAP, so.

The rigor mortis has fully set in,

so between eight and 10 hours for this man.

But for Mike's relationship with Beth,

I would hazard a guess.

It was over before it began.

I think she's just upset for you.

As we all are, about recent events.

Yeah, we know things must be difficult,

so if you ever wanted to talk about it?

Eight to 10 hours means

that the victim died before midnight.

His fiancee, Debbie,

belongs to a hobby motorcycle gang called Mama's Angels,

along with her mother, Mama Sass, who leads them.

They arrived in Brokenwood the day before yesterday.

About now, they should have been celebrating

Gavin and Debbie's wedding.

Instead, they'll be drowning their sorrows

at the Snake and Tiger.

Well, the bride must have been devastated.

You'd think so.

Actually, that wasn't the impression I got.

I'm very sorry for your loss.

After the initial shock, the look on her face was-

Come on, we need to sit down.

Almost one of relief.

(ominous music)

(pleasant music)

Oh, Debbie.

I don't know what to say, it's just too awful for words.

Thanks, Mrs. Baker.

I know that Gavin really appreciated all your hard work.

We'll talk soon about un-arranging the arrangements.

Now's not the time.

(Debbie crying)

Well, this is a first.

I mean, I've had weddings canceled before,

but usually it's because of cold feet,

or grubby affairs, not dead grooms.

Oh!

Oh my god, I am so sorry.

That was insensitive.

You and Beth, Detective, an absolute shock.

Is there no one in town who hasn't heard about it?

Not likely.

With Gavin and Debbie, that is a complete tragedy,

but, and also for you and lovely Beth,

but people will always get married.

It's human nature, as you know.

There will always be another wedding.

Well not for Gavin, obviously,

but for others.

There will always be another happy day, for others,

and maybe for yourself, at a later state.

Mrs. Baker, what can you tell us about the bride?

Oh, oh no.

Don't tell me you think that Gavin's death was suspicious.

I couldn't cope.

Well, we have to consider all aspects.

That poor girl been through enough.

Did you know that they were childhood sweethearts?

Life conspired to separate them,

and then years later,

Facebook helped them find their way back to each other.

Thanks.

- Yeah, thank you. - Mrs. Baker.

Good afternoon, I'm Detective Kristin Sims.

I believe you've met DSS Shepherd.

I appreciate this is a very difficult time for you all,

but we would like a brief word if that's possible.

If you must.

(somber music)

[Mike] I understand that you and Gavin

hadn't been together long.

We got together 10 months ago.

Yeah, but they've known each other for years, eh hon?

[Debbie] Since primary school.

Did you know he was riding your motorbike

rather than his own?

No, I found that out later on.

Even ironic, it's just-

Where the hell's my bike? Bastards!

All right, all right.

- Gavin took it. - What, why?

It was supposed to be a surprise.

He wanted to froufrou it up for you.

He should've been back by now, though.

That's all right, you can ride with me.

Don't, nobody's riding anywhere.

You guys have all been on the cans.

I called a cab.

Okay, let's go.

Hoss, you're on bike watch.

Tell Gavin when he gets back, we'll meet him at the lodge.

Would you describe him as a skilled rider?

He was the best.

This is difficult, but can you think of anyone

that might have wanted to cause him harm?

No, no one.

Detective, Debbie's just lost the love of her life.

I've lost a wonderful son-in-law.

Perhaps it's better if your questions could wait?

And hit up my girls.

They're not overly fond of police at the best of times,

and it's definitely not the best of times.

So, none of you knew Gavin very well?

Not until Debbie decided to get hitched.

Yeah, we were more her support crew, eh?

But he was really nice.

Might someone have it in for Debbie?

You know, hurt Gavin to hurt her?

No one would even try, 'cause they know

they'd have Mama's Angels to deal with.

All right, you guys seem pretty tight.

Angels that ride together, fly together.

Get it, 'cause we ride and angels fly?

Yeah, no I get the image.

No, not an image, for real.

You should've seen the way we stood up for Debbie

when that cow Trudy started talking trash about her.

A gang of Angels in her face shut her up.

What, she's lucky it wasn't worse.

Sorry, Trudy, who works here?

Was that her name?

I don't know. Maybe it was Thunder,

or someone else that Debbie was inside with.

Inside?

What?

Right, thanks.

You've been very helpful.

(tense music)

[Daniel] Gina?

I can't believe the pain he must have suffered.

Well, that's unlike you, Gina.

What is?

Well, you don't usually express sympathy

at this stage of proceedings.

I'm not a monster.

I feel his pain.

On the inside, he will be all broken up.

Do you mean he was dead at the moment he hit the ground?

What? He's not dead.

- I'm pretty sure he's dead. - Mike?

Mike, what?

No, this guy.

Oh, him.

Turns out, the cause of death

wasn't as intriguing as I hoped.

You sound disappointed.

For Mike, of course.

I can only hope he won't be afraid to get back on his bike.

This guy won't be getting back on his bike anytime soon.

Not him, Mike!

He has fall off his horse.

He needs to get back on his bike.

Gina, could we focus on the victim for now?

Of course.

But Mike was a victim, too.

He has been emotionally brutalized.

He needs our compassion.

[Daniel] Gina.

Here's what I know.

The injuries had nothing to do with his death.

As you might expect, his lungs were full of water.

This man drowned.

So he definitely survived the crash.

He would've been unconscious,

but he might have survived the night

if he hadn't been in the creek.

All right, then it's possible that he came round

after the crash, got up, and staggered down to the creek?

His arms and leg are broken in five places,

so revivable, but he wouldn't have been able to crawl,

let alone walk.

[Kristin] Was there a fight, or disagreement

between Trudy and the bride-to-be last night?

I wasn't here last night,

but there was nothing on the incident report.

Well, a few of the Angels seem to think that something happened.

As I say, I wasn't here.

But if there was a bit of biffle,

I'm sure Trudy would've mentioned it.

Right, so there was no fight then.

Eight of them versus Trudy.

All I know is they've been great customers

ever since they arrived two days ago.

Welcome to the Snake and Tiger, ladies.

Whatever you need, you just let me know.

Ah, a flower.

I used to ride in the younger days.

The 1972 Mach 4H2.

And you're alive to tell the tale.

Hey, I won't hear a word said against it.

So, how many cogs you got in your box?

We're just after a beer, old man.

The youth of today don't appreciate

the magic of the Mach 4 Kawasaki.

Okay, so a gang of women arrive out of the blue,

and cause no fuss.

To the best of my knowledge, yes.

Exactly what this town needs,

a bunch of fun-loving tourists.

Trudy here?

Eh... I think she's out.

You think?

Right, she's either out or not, which is it?

I think she definitely said

that she was thinking about going out.

- Andy. - Hey.

Introduce you.

Jas, DC Chalmers,

dude I told you about from out at the pickup spot.

[Daniel] Sorry to hear about your brother.

He's all right, lad.

Andy, get me another beer, would ya mate?

Sure.

About time you lot showed up.

- [Daniel] Because? - [Jason] Because my brother's been killed,

and it wasn't an accident.

What makes you say that?

Because he's been on a bike since he was five years old.

I mean, yeah he liked to speed,

but why would he suddenly crash on a straight road?

- I wondered that. - Good.

Because somebody did this.

Tampered with the bike, or something.

Any ideas why someone might want to do that?

We get a fair bit of flack in our job.

Disgruntled customer, something like that?

Yeah.

And you wouldn't happen to know why

he was riding Debbie's bike that night?

He was bringing it back here.

He was gonna deck out some mirror chrome rims for her.

He wanted it to be a surprise.

On the night before the wedding?

Have you checked out his missus? She was born to ride.

They're all about the bikes, that lot.

Well even so, he'd been drinking at the pub.

Hey, if I know one thing about my brother,

he never drank and rode.

Never.

Good to know.

Is that all?

(tense music)

I'll tell you this for free.

You find him fast, or I will.

(tense music)

According to Jason Murphy,

Gavin snuck out with Debbie's bike

'cause he wanted to fit it out with flash new rims.

As evidenced by Mama Sass.

Yeah, it was his wedding present to Debbie.

She would've preferred the pink,

but the mirror chrome, that was Gav's call.

It was top of the range, it was sexy as hell.

You know, he created this whole plan just to keep it a secret.

I need to get onto it now.

Are you sure, hon? It's getting late.

Just put them on the table tomorrow

with the rest of the presents, and enjoy yourself.

She's having a good time.

She won't even notice I'm gone.

And if she does, just tell her it's tradition

for the bride and groom to sleep apart before the wedding.

Just a big softy underneath, aren't you?

Here you go.

Thanks, Mum.

Hey, Mama to you.

[Mike] He was heading to his workshop?

I don't know, I never asked.

And of course, he never came back.

So, Debbie doesn't think twice

when she doesn't see Gavin again.

She expects to see him at the wedding.

Meanwhile, he's lying injured in the bush.

These Angels, maybe they're not

as hardcore as they present.

I mean, responsible drinking at least.

I've been doing some digging into their values.

They seem to spend most of their time

driving up and down the country

doing bike displays at charities and events.

Set up by Mama Sass five years ago,

they currently boast 25 members.

Many of whom would know how to tamper with a bike.

Yeah, but if Mama Sass was the only one

who knew Gavin was taking Debbie's bike,

then surely that means Debbie was the intended target.

But if she was the target, why would someone drown Gavin?

According to Gina, he was alive

when someone dragged him into the creek.

[Mike] We're sure about that?

Yeah, because Gavin's boot prints are there,

and according to Gina, he wouldn't have been able to stand.

So, we have a drowned guy who everybody liked,

but with no obvious motive.

Well, Trudy might have had a problem with Debbie.

Apparently, there was some aggro between them

at the Snake and Tiger, but

when I asked Ray about it, he just downplayed it.

Would Trudy know how to sabotage a bike?

I wouldn't have thought so but, you know, it's Trudy.

Perhaps in Brokenwood Women's they studied

"Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance."

Now here's a fun coincidence.

Guess who was in Brokenwood Women's together?

Trudy and Debbie.

[Daniel] What was Debbie in for?

Assault, and fraud.

So, our grief-stricken bride

isn't all sweetness and light.

Yeah, but it's not just Debbie who was inside.

Every single member of Mama's Angels has done time.

(blues music)

Of the 25 members,

only eight were in Brokenwood for the wedding.

The others were part of a parade in the city,

which leaves us with our bridal party.

Debbie, fraud and assault.

Mama Sass, fraud, theft as a servant.

Young Hoss, GBH.

Stevie, manslaughter and EBA.

Bella Donna, little bit of everything really,

from shoplifting, to possession, to public nudity.

Certainly casts the Angels in a whole new light.

Gotta love an ironic gang name.

None of them have form for murder.

Maybe Debbie knew Gavin was taking her bike,

and grabbed the chance to sabotage it.

And Mama Sass lied about the surprise wedding present

to cover her daughter's tracks.

But, why would Debbie wanna harm her fiance?

Maybe Trudy knows. Maybe that's what the argument-

I wanna see it.

I wanna see the murder weapon.

- I have a right. - Take it easy, sir.

I wanna get a look at that bike that Gavin was on.

Okay, Mr. Murphy, settle down.

No, no, no, no, no.

If you're all gonna sit around on your asses,

then at least let me prove that somebody's-

Mr. Murphy.

How about we grab a cup of coffee, have a chat?

It isn't right.

Whoever killed my brother's still out there.

Are you guys doing anything about it?

Jason, we have an investigation into the accident-

Accident?

What makes you think that someone killed your brother?

It's in my bones, mate.

He was my brother.

I mean, you sense things.

- He's been messed with. - So you don't have any proof.

But that's why I need to get my hands

on that bloody machine.

I will know straightaway.

Our serious crash unit are due to examine the bike soon.

Soon?

What does that mean?

I can't let you anywhere near the bike

until it's been examined.

It's standard protocol.

He had everything to live for.

Like his life with Debbie?

He had this whole big wedding planned.

You should've seen how excited he was.

We're gonna be escorted to the venue by Felons on Bikes,

then when we leave the lodge, we'll walk through a motorbike guard of honor.

And that'll be the Angels revving their engines,

and releasing balloons and 24 black doves.

24?

Yeah, one for each year we've known each other.

And black doves, I'm guessing they could be pigeons?

No, they have to be doves.

Oh yeah, the cake.

Right, the cake.

You said shaped like a fat skin.

So a big, black cake that looks like a tire?

Correct.

You haven't changed your mind, then?

What did you think of Debbie?

Good match for Gavin?

Debbie?

She's fine.

Why do you ask me that?

Just curious.

I've always liked Debbie.

She's a good sort.

[Mike] So as far as you know, they were in love

with a bright future ahead?

Yeah.

When the crash unit is finished,

I'll let you know if they found anything.

That's the best you can do, is it?

It is, until we know more.

(blues music)

(birds chirping)

Looks like you're packing some horsepower.

EVO or carby?

[Hoss] EVO.

Nice.

- He owns a bike. - Oh yeah?

- [Hoss] Wouldn't have picked it. - [Daniel] A Triumph T100.

Good luck with that.

Yeah, good luck. See you in my dust.

Eh... We're actually looking for Debbie.

- Is she around? - She's gone out.

That fight she had with Trudy Nielsen yesterday.

Know what that was about?

Dunno.

- What fight? - Yeah, don't know.

We already know that Trudy and Debbie had a row,

so if you could just tell us what it was about,

we don't have to bother Debbie.

And denying it makes you look

like you're hiding something, so.

We're not big on talking to cops.

Right, your criminal past.

Emphasis on past, bike man.

And even if the fight was suspicious, which it wasn't,

Angels don't narc on Angels.

It's Mama's number one rule.

Number two is stay on the straight and narrow.

We're good girls now.

Khm... Sorry, my colleague didn't mean to bring up your

criminal records. He's...

He's kinda new.

So if you could just tell me where Debbie is,

that would be a great help.

At the chemist.

Oh, is she unwell?

Yeah, she's got really bad morning sick...

Bowel issues.

(Kristin scoffs)

(tense music)

(rain pattering)

So they're definitely hiding something.

The pregnancy, do you think?

Even if she was pregnant, who would care?

Unless, the baby isn't Gavin's.

Maybe, but even if that was the motive,

Debbie would have no way of knowing for sure at this stage.

Well you just hope for the best, right?

So, a glamorous lady gang,

all of whom are capable of sabotaging a bike,

one of whom has a problem with Brokenwood local, Trudy,

who has done time for murder.

Manslaughter, wasn't it?

No, good lawyer.

Aside from here, there's no obvious suspect.

Well, I wish I could help, but I'm new.

(Kristin laughs)

Come on, Ray. We need to talk to Trudy, where is she?

On leave, a nice well-deserved holiday.

Oh, a nice holiday?

Like at your house, perhaps.

Now how would that be a bloody holiday?

No, she's away.

- But didn't tell you where? - No,

but knowing Trudy as I do,

no doubt somewhere surprising.

- Such as? - If I knew that,

it wouldn't be surprising, would it?

Could you let us know when you hear from her?

Of course.

No worries.

Thanks.

(ominous music)

I don't know how long I can hold them off.

I'm so sorry about all this, Ray.

You need to tell me what's bloody going on.

(blues music)

(truck rumbling)

- (Kristin knocks) - Hey.

I was just about to go over and get a coffee from Frodo.

- Do you want your usual? - Yeah, sure thanks.

(chain rattling)

You're up and at it early this morning.

You know what they say,

married to the job.

Do they say that?

Who, who is they?

(truck rumbling)

(door slams)

(truck revving)

(gate clattering)

(blues music)

Well, that's a first.

Yeah, but not entirely unexpected.

He overtook me on my way here, driving like a demon.

I'll take care of it.

Be my guest.

Jason, step away from the bike.

Come on, man!

You're in enough trouble as it is.

Listen to me, the clutch cable's been cut through.

You can see it.

When your clutch goes, you lose control.

I know what happens when a clutch cable goes.

Well, there you go.

And bets on the ABS was disabled.

Yeah, well that's for the serious crash guys to determine.

Gavin would've skidded unchecked.

Someone set him up to crash.

I know it looks suspicious,

but you know what looks even more suspicious?

You breaking into police property.

I'm just doing your job for you.

Messing with evidence makes my job harder.

Jason, you're grieving Gavin, I get that.

But vandalizing a police station

is not something that we can ignore.

I'll sort out your gate

when you arrest someone for my brother's murder.

Yes.

Throw him in the cells and let him cool off,

and then book him for willful damage.

Thank you for coming in again

on such short notice, Mama Sass.

Anything I can do to help.

Just call me Steph.

Okay, Steph.

This is delicate, but I hope you can shed some light on

some of your Angels.

Yeah, what do you need to know?

Primarily if any of them had a problem

with Debbie or Gavin.

None, we support each other, that's our creed.

[Mike] So you don't think any of them

would've sabotaged Debbie's bike?

I don't know anybody that would've done that, or why.

Maybe for the same reason that someone

might disable her bike's antilock braking system.

Ah, no, no, no, that's standard.

We do that all the time.

I mean, you wouldn't be able to do skids or wheelies

unless the ABS is turned off.

Good to know.

Did any of the Angels

leave the party at the Snake and Tiger?

Erm... Not that I saw.

Detective, if you're suggesting that any of my girls

would hurt another Angel, you're insulting my intelligence.

We look out for each other. We don't turn on each other.

And underneath all of the staunch posing,

and the glitzy glamour,

we're just a bunch of good time girls that like to ride.

I don't know whether you've ever been out on the open road

strapped to the back of a big bike, but I tell you what,

it's a freedom like no other.

[Mike] I imagine so.

[Mama Sass] You don't ride?

Holden Kingswood 1971, four doors and a cassette player.

Old school, eh? Nice.

You know, actually thinking back,

the only aggro that I saw directed towards Debbie

was from that woman at the bar.

Trudy Nielsen?

Look, I hate to diss another sister,

but we both know she's done time for murder.

To be fair, all of your gang

has done time for one thing or another.

Sure, we've done time.

I formed Mama's Angels to give sad, abandoned women

a place to belong after they got out of prison.

Which is where Debbie suffered at the hands of this Trudy.

Suffered?

Look, they shared a cell together, for a time.

And Debbie told me that it was a rough ride.

(eerie music) (women grunting)

You call me a narc again, I'll put your head through these bars

like a slice of bread in a toaster.

(Debbie coughing) Please, Trudy, Trudy.

I'm sorry.

Trudy Nielsen assaulted your daughter?

That's how she told it,

but the point is, nobody wants to go back,

especially not Debbie.

I mean, the only reason why she was inside

was because she was trying to protect me.

You're suggesting she lied to protect you?

My daughter is not a liar, Mr. Shepherd.

She's many things, but she's not that.

She defended me physically.

She interceded, and somebody got hurt.

Now that should've been seen as self-defense,

- but it wasn't. - I see.

I'm dedicated to making sure that these girls

stay on the straight and narrow,

and I can only hope

that any decent police officer would support that.

(blues music)

[Bella Donna] Thank you.

You seem to be getting on with the tourists.

Ah yeah, they're great.

I've been run off my feet since they got here.

And I met someone kinda special.

Oh, have we been discovering our romantic side, have we?

No, no, I've always been a romantic.

Just never found the right person to share it with, 'til now.

- Usual? - Yeah, thanks.

Seem to be a interesting bunch.

Pretty chill for a gang of scary ladies.

Not Bella Donna, though.

She's not scary at all.

You heard any arguments?

No.

Really?

Nothing at all?

Totally, nothing.

Hm.

Unless,

look, does it count if I saw something,

but didn't hear it?

What did you see, Frodo?

Well, the first day they got here,

I may have seen something.

For you, on the house.

Really?

That is so sweet of you.

Anytime you need a coffee

when you're in town, I'm your guy.

Couldn't quite make out what they were saying, but

it seemed kind of intense.

It was a real dust up. (coffee splashes)

And a waste of a good oat milk latte.

Wait, sorry, just hang on a minute.

Who chucked a coffee at who?

Look, the only name I know is Bella Donna.

But the curly-haired one threw it at the one who was getting married.

And you haven't seen either of them today?

No, but I see Bella Donna every day like clockwork.

I really think something might be happening there.

(tense music)

- Excuse me. - Yeah?

Hi.

Is Debbie not with you today?

Nah.

- You know where she is? - Nah.

I understand there was a bit of an altercation

the other day, between Stevie and Debbie.

Stevie chucked a coffee at Debbie?

- Do you know why? - Yeah,

so it was kind of funny-

Stevie didn't throw it.

She tripped.

That's all.

Yeah, she tripped,

and it went all over Debbie.

- Kinda funny. - Huh,

Sorry.

My mistake.

- See ya, Frodo-licious! - Bye, my bike babe.

(bikes revving)

Why would Stevie throw a coffee

in the face of the bride-to-be?

Maybe she doesn't like oat milk.

I've never understood it.

Or Debbie just has a knack for getting up people's noses.

Mama Sass assured me that everything

was happy happy joy joy in the gang.

So she either doesn't know what's going on-

Or she's covering for someone.

Well either way, she's adamant that none of the women

would mess with Debbie's bike.

How far away are we from confirming

that the clutch cable was cut?

SCU are on it.

We should know very soon, but I'm inclined to believe Jason.

We now know that Debbie

was fighting with two people, Stevie and-

We'd like to see Detective Shepherd.

- Say what it's about? - It's okay.

Ray, Trudy.

How can I help?

Go on.

My sister has something she'd like to share.

(tense music)

[Mike] Well?

Yes, there was a minor altercation

on the premises of the Snake and Tiger.

Well, if it was so minor

why didn't you mention it when we asked?

Well, Trudy had only just informed me.

The Snake and Tiger

is an aspirational drinking establishment.

We don't condone violence in any form,

nor want to be known as a house of rough and tumble.

This altercation was between you and Debbie Cusack?

What prompted it?

She's just someone I knew, back when I was-

When you shared a cell in the Brokenwood Women's Prison?

How'd you know about that?

[Mike] I've heard one side of the story. Now I wanna hear yours.

[Trudy] For a time, we shared a cell.

(lock clicks)

Debbie got it into her head that I'd dobbed her in.

- Debbie. - Loose lips Truds.

It wasn't me.

[Debbie] Oh, I'm sorry, I stand corrected.

- It's lying loose lips Truds. - I don't narc.

(both grunting) (intense music)

If I had a shiv right now, I'd slit your lying throat!

I didn't say anything!

Liar, I've just done 14 days in solitary because of you!

(Trudy groans)

Had Debbie bashed someone?

I'm not confirming or denying anything,

other than to say she's pretty aggressive.

Don't believe me, I don't care.

You wanted to know about the fight, and now you do.

Who started it, the fight in the bar?

She did.

I told you, she had it in for me.

(ominous music)

If I were you, I'd find somewhere else to drink.

Is that how you greet all your customers, Nielsen?

[Trudy] We're not in prison now, Debbie.

You don't get to push me around.

We're not going anywhere.

Sisters, meet the piece of crap narc I told you about.

I didn't narc.

Why can't you get your stupid head around that?

Better watch what you say to her.

Or what?

Why don't you all just get the hell out?

So that's all it was, was it?

Just a bit of push and shove.

A minor altercation, and Trudy did the wise thing

and removed herself from the situation.

You left work?

I went outside for a bit, to cool off, calm down.

She was counting backwards from 999.

[Kristin] That was very restrained of you.

It was an old trick our mother taught us

when we used to scrap as kids.

Unless it got really bad,

and then she'd lock us in the outside lavatory.

Usually Trudy being the more feisty one.

What?

I'm just saying, if you had've smacked that biker girl,

you would've dealt with her good and proper.

Which you didn't.

That's right, I didn't.

So your old life turned up in your new life,

and you ordered them out of town.

I suggested they drink somewhere else, that's all.

Or, did you threaten Debbie to get her to leave?

Ah, that'd be nice and easy, wouldn't it?

The ex-con threatens Debbie.

Oh, she must be the one that murdered her fiance.

Who said he was murdered?

I don't imagine you're interrogating people

for the hell of it, Detective.

(blues music)

[Kristin] Excuse us.

So she attempts to injure Debbie,

because no bride means no wedding,

and they all leave.

But, accidentally kills Gavin instead.

Hm, Trudy is a schemer.

Except-

[Kristin] Except why would Trudy, of all people,

waltz in here and hand us the motive on a silver platter?

Serious crash have confirmed that the clutch cable was cut

in such a way that it would've given out

after a few minutes of riding.

- Great. - (phone chimes)

Oh, Gina wants me.

She's always wanted you.

Down at the mortuary.

- What? - No, nothing.

No, what?

Do you want backup?

Why would I want backup?

Well, she knows you're single again.

She might throw herself at you.

At the mortuary?

That's her happy place.

I don't need backup.

Okay.

But, if we don't hear from you in two hours,

I'm calling in search and rescue.

Okay, bike guy.

How difficult would it be to cut a clutch cable?

Not at all.

Hard part is cutting it somewhere the rider doesn't notice.

I mean, do we buy that Trudy would know how to do that?

There's two things we know about Trudy.

She's got game, and she knows

how to meticulously plan a murder.

And we never saw him again.

Thanks.

(tense music)

What happened to your boss?

He had to go to the morgue.

No, guess we're all destined there one day, hey?

Ever owned a motorbike?

No.

- But you have, Ray. - Yeah,

in my youth, when they made real bikes.

So?

Did you ever watch Ray

tinkering with his bike in his youth?

No, why?

Because somebody tampered with Debbie's bike,

and that caused Gavin's accident.

Then, maybe you should speak to people

who actually own bikes.

I don't know, maybe like that group of bikers in town.

Nah, but we wanna talk to you because so far,

you're the only person that's had a problem

with those same bikers.

But I haven't done anything.

[Daniel] Apart from getting into a fight with-

Hey, hey, steady on.

She clearly said it was a minor altercation.

A disagreement between ladies.

With someone you despised.

And you were at the pub the whole night?

Of course I was.

Like Ray said, I went outside to cool off.

796, 795.

And then, stayed out the back.

And after it closed, go anywhere?

- [Trudy] Like where? - I don't know.

For a drive.

I'd like to go now.

Yes, I think we've been more than generous with our time.

Okay, sure.

But, if you do remember anything suspicious

happening that night, please let us know.

If we get confirmation

that Debbie made Trudy's life a misery,

we could be looking at a revenge gone wrong.

Mm, need to get Debbie's side of that prison story.

Yeah, well be helpful if I could actually find her.

Ah, you want me to come with?

I'm gonna say no.

Well, I just don't think the Angels particularly warmed

to your riveting story about EVOs and carbys,

or whatever it was.

Well, give it time.

I'll get them raving about farkles.

Yeah, well let's not pretend like that's a thing.

What do you get if you cross function with sparkles?

Function and sparkle.

Really, farkle?

Bling-bling, motherfarkler.

(gentle music)

[Gina] Mike, I want to show you some flesh.

Flesh?

[Gina] I found this tiny fragment of skin

in the zipper of the victim's boot.

And it's not his?

Exactly, this is the exciting part.

I went all over his body with a very fine tooth brush,

and I couldn't find any cut or scratch

that matches this fragment.

It was gouged out by the zip as someone pulled the boot on.

So it likely came from someone's hand.

Or finger, perhaps.

You want to have a look under the microscope?

I'll take your word for it.

Okay, I will send it to the lab

and hopefully they will find out whose skin it is.

As soon as I hear something, I'll come for you.

Thanks, Gina.

Mike, I want you to know that I understand

how hard it must have been, losing Beth like that.

Thanks, Gina.

I appreciate it, but I don't need to talk about it.

You must. You must let it all hang out.

I'm good, thanks Gina.

But, your snake tooth.

Beth asked me to return it.

Oh, my lucky charm.

(Gina speaks foreign language)

Meaning?

Unlucky for some.

(upbeat music)

(gentle music)

Ah, hiya.

Is Debbie back?

Inside.

Thanks.

[Angel] Let's get the bikes covered up.

(people chattering on TV) (people laughing on TV)

[Man On TV] Hey lady, could you move a little faster?

(people laughing on TV)

(Debbie laughing)

(tense music)

Sorry to interrupt.

Do you have a moment to chat?

Trudy Nielsen told us a lot

about your time together in prison.

Like to get your side of the story.

You think Trudy had something to do with Gavin's accident?

Do you?

Wouldn't put it past her.

Well, she said that you made her life a misery,

so perhaps she was trying to cause you some grief.

If she touched my bike, I'll kill her.

Because by touching your bike,

she caused Gavin to crash?

[Debbie] That's what I meant.

Mm-hmm.

The truth is, I didn't actually have a serious issue with Trudy.

I just needed to get out of circulation for a bit.

I was finding prison life kind of stressful.

So you wanted to go into solitary?

I couldn't say that publicly,

'cause it'd make me look weak,

so I made up a story about Trudy dobbing me in.

Did you ever put Trudy in a headlock,

then threaten to slit her throat?

Had to make it real, you know.

So that's a yes.

Did she ever threaten to ram your head

through the prison bars like bread in a toaster?

- Who told you that? - Well,

[Kristin] doesn't matter who told me, but is it true?

Didn't happen.

I'm beginning to understand

why Trudy didn't want you in the pub.

I did get a bit pushy, 'cause I didn't want her blabbing

about my private business in front of the other Angels.

I'm Mama Sass's daughter.

I have a rep to maintain.

Right, but it's okay for some of your private business

to be out in the open.

I take it this thing with Stevie is new?

I don't know what you think you saw.

I saw two people intertwined on a couch,

looking very comfortable in each other's space.

Stevie was comforting me.

In case you missed it, I'm grieving my dead fiance.

Although you're not wearing your engagement ring anymore.

Give forensics a hurry up on that skin fragment.

Thanks.

- (Kristin knocks) - Hey.

Ready to hear a new theory?

I just interrupted Debbie and Stevie

looking like a very comfy couple, it was undeniable.

Though, Debbie did.

So, what if the bride-to-be was having an affair?

[Daniel] And wanted the groom out of the picture.

And if not her, it's fair to assume

that someone would have a problem with an affair

so close to the upcoming nuptials.

And presumably, that person wasn't Trudy.

What about Jason Murphy?

What about him?

Well, if Debbie was the target,

maybe he wanted to protect his brother from a sham marriage.

And inadvertently killed his own brother in the process?

Or more likely, what if Stevie

wanted Gavin out of the picture?

Was Debbie forthcoming about the pregnancy?

Not entirely.

Oh, I understand you might be pregnant.

Who told you that?

Someone let it slip.

Is it true?

Congratulations.

[Debbie] Hardly a time to celebrate, is it?

No, it's true.

It's a tragedy Gavin won't be here to support you.

Ah, sorry, assuming that the child is Gavin's.

Whose else would it be?

Which wasn't exactly a yes.

I think repurposing this

for Gavin's wake is a wonderful idea.

A phoenix rising from the ashes.

Christ.

He hasn't even been cremated yet.

Oh, I'm so sorry.

That came out wrong, I only mean-

You mean, what else are we gonna do with it?

Yeah.

And it is black.

I'll talk to Jason, see what he thinks, yeah?

[Kristin] Sorry to interrupt.

Detectives.

We're just in the middle of organizing

the catering for the wake.

Gavin's wedding cake?

Well, we thought he'd like it to be eaten.

Put so much effort into the wedding arrangements.

So eager to be married.

Debbie didn't have to do a thing.

I thought brides liked to be

all over wedding arrangements.

Well, he wanted to do it all for her.

Was a very modern man.

We can confirm the details later.

[Mama Sass] Yeah, sure.

[Kristin] We were just actually looking for Stevie.

I don't keep tabs on everybody 24/7.

They're grown women.

Why don't you try the mobile coffee shop up the road?

Look, we're really exhausted.

These questions, constantly?

They're not helping.

We'll be brief.

What can you tell us

about Debbie's relationship with Stevie?

What?

Debbie and her involvement with Stevie Johansson.

What, you didn't know?

This is a load of,

you know that she was about to get married.

So, what is it?

You guys see a bunch of empowered women on bikes

and we're meant to be lesbian, is that it?

My daughter loved Gavin.

He's not even buried, and here you guys are,

spreading salacious garbage about their relationship?

I guess I expected better.

We can't be the only ones

who know about Debbie and Stevie.

Agreed, it's hard to keep a secret in a gang.

And what Mrs. Baker said about Gavin

taking control of their wedding arrangement,

that's unusual, right?

In my limited experience, yes.

(Kristin laughs) Limited?

Come on!

So, how involved did you get in your wedding details, then?

Uh, I was happy to take a step back.

Or, maybe you see a straight guy who's interested in cakes

and you think that's odd, is that right?

Guess I just expected better.

Yeah, that was a deeply uncomfortable burn.

(doors slam)

(blues music)

If it is just a fling, that's one thing.

But if it's been going on for a while,

I buy Debbie and or Stevie wanting to get rid of Gavin.

And you know what they say,

unlike the pyramids, love triangles are not built to last.

- Do they? - Mm-hmm.

Who said that?

Well, I don't remember,

but maybe it's the same they

who said you were married to your job.

(blues music)

So.

Who's they?

My ex-wife, Debra.

Actual ex-wife?

Actual, yes.

She signed me away,

along with Beth's ideals of marriage.

She sabotaged you?

No, she told the truth.

I am married to my job,

and in this marriage, there's only room for one.

And I'm okay with that.

But that's just me.

Here endeth the lesson.

Here we go.

You are the sweetest guy, Frodo,

giving us all these free coffees.

Delicious ladies deserve delicious coffee, right?

Mike, Detective Sims.

This is Bella Donna, and Young Hoss.

They're two of the Angels that are in town.

- We've met. - [Mike] Greetings, all.

Yep, we've seen a lot of Brokenwood's finest

over the last few days, haven't we?

Always seem to be sniffing around.

[Mike] Actually, Young Hoss, I'm interested in Stevie.

Oh yeah, that doesn't sound creepy at all.

(Bella Donna snorts)

Know where she is?

No.

[Kristin] So you have no idea where Stevie is, or Debbie?

Better get on.

Aren't you all staying together?

[Bella Donna] I guess they're hanging out somewhere else.

- Because they're a couple? - Maybe.

I never know if it's still a secret or not.

And how long have you all been holding onto this secret?

[Hoss] How is that any of your business?

It's our business because we're quite keen

to find out who killed Debbie's fiance.

(suspenseful music)

I think it's been about a year.

Thank you.

A year is a long time.

That's not a recent fling.

So, jealous Stevie wants to stop the wedding.

And is well placed to make it look like an accident.

But hang on, everybody else seemed to know

about Debbie and Stevie.

So, Mama Sass must know.

Which means she lied.

[Kristin] And she's all about protecting her daughter.

Yeah, but from what exactly?

Another jail sentence?

Oh, oh, what a day!

On my fourth coffee.

Stress, you see.

I told my doctor, my heart rate is banging

faster than a sailor in a South Seas brothel.

Apologies, it's just so awful isn't it?

I mean, I've had grooms die on their wedding night,

but at least they went with a smile on their face.

Mrs. Baker?

Sorry, sorry, yes.

We were just debating your comment

about Gavin being a very modern man.

Oh, well, he was.

Organized, decisive,

wouldn't let Debbie worry about a thing.

As I said to Mama Sass, when she gave me the CD

the night before the wedding,

he even had the music all ready, fully under control.

And also, you know, the history with the brother.

I thought that was very, you know, modern.

The brother?

Well in the past, a while ago, about five years back,

around the time that Jason and Gavin lost their parents,

oh that was very sad.

Drowned in a whitewater rafting accident.

Back then, Debbie used to go out with Jason,

the brother, the towie.

So, that's how she knew Gavin, through Jason?

Yes, and I thought that was lovely

having him as the best man, very modern.

No hard feelings or anything.

(ominous music)

(birds chirping) (pleasant music)

Mr. Murphy.

Thought you'd be at the station, working on our gate.

I thought you'd be out tracking down my brother's killer.

I am.

What are you suggesting?

All I'm suggesting is that maybe you can help

with some background?

Did you notice any friction

between Debbie and Gavin leading into the wedding?

What's that got to do with it?

You can't think Debbie had anything to do with this.

We have to look at all possibilities.

I suppose there was the odd argument,

but I just put it down to pre-wedding nerves.

So, nothing to suggest

that Debbie had been seeing someone else?

What?

Who?

I'm not at liberty to say.

No, never.

Well, if you haven't heard anything,

then maybe there's no truth to the rumor

that she has a special friend.

Christ, mate.

She only hangs out with the Angels.

I mean, where would she even meet...

Wait.

One of the other women in Mama's Angels?

Get outta town, it's not possible.

Why do you say that?

Because she's not that way inclined.

[Daniel] You sound like you have it on good authority.

I know enough.

How well do you know her?

Well enough to know that's not her style.

Okay, it's safe to say that people change over time.

Say, over five years, people can evolve.

I've had enough of this.

If it was true,

which one?

- That's not for me to say. - Which one?

Mr. Murphy, that's not for me to say.

(gentle music)

(engine rumbling)

(tense music)

(door slams)

(door slams)

(engine rumbles)

Of all the people upset about Debbie's affair,

Gavin would've been the most put out.

Maybe he found out about the affair and threatened Stevie.

I mean, everyone else is either lying about the affair,

or refusing to accept it.

Or Jason found out and tampered with Debbie's bike.

Jason's a hothead, but he looked shocked when I told him.

Besides, he strikes me more as a guy

who'd have a go at Debbie directly.

Maybe he still holds a flame for Debbie.

[Kristin] Takes out his own brother deliberately?

And he knew about the fact

that Gavin was planning on taking Debbie's bike that night.

That towie's causing trouble at Frodo's.

(ominous music)

[Bella Donna] Put it down, dickhead!

[Jason] Not until one of you tells me

who messed my brother around.

- Put it down! - Just put it down and maybe

we can arm wrestle or something.

That's hardly a fair fight, bro.

You wait 'til Mama Sass hears about this.

She will skin you alive.

[Jason] Give her a call, then.

Maybe she can tell me what I wanna know.

- Mr. Murphy. - Ah, here's trouble.

[Daniel] Put the bike down.

He knows, but he can't tell me, or he won't.

Digging yourself a very big hole, Jason.

All of you know, and you really oughta tell me.

(crane clunks)

Don't.

(crane clunks)

- Well? - All right!

Stevie.

There you go.

Wasn't so hard now, was it?

Stevie, hey?

Big, bad Stevie.

Two trips to the cells in one day.

Keep it up, and you'll wanna redecorate.

Yeah, well you weren't gonna tell me, and I have the right to know.

Right to know who was sleeping with your brother's fiancee?

- Yeah. - Or your ex-girlfriend?

Same thing, right?

So, how did you actually feel about that?

[Jason] About Gavin being cheated on?

No, about your brother marrying your ex-girlfriend.

Must've raised some interesting feelings.

Come on, man.

It was ages ago, plus she's up the duff.

- By Gavin? - Yes, by Gavin.

Listen, you're looking under rocks that were turned over years ago.

Well, we'll have plenty of time to reminisce

while we hold you overnight.

Overnight?

On what grounds?

Ignoring previous police bail conditions,

willful damage, disorderly behavior.

You want me to carry on?

Just find out who killed my brother.

We will.

If we haven't already.

(tense music)

You're gonna have to stop these visits.

People are gonna start talking.

I'm used to being gossiped about.

As am I.

I don't doubt it.

Could you give us a moment?

So, yesterday.

Why didn't you tell us you knew about Debbie and Stevie?

I knew I should've have lied to you.

My daughter's been through enough, okay?

She doesn't need people gossiping.

Besides, it was nobody's business.

Her and Gavin, they've got an understanding.

- Gavin knew? - [Mama Sass] Come on, Detective.

We've seen a few sunsets.

We both know the old school rules

don't necessarily apply anymore.

[Mike] And he was fine with it?

Well, everyone knew it was a fling.

You know, last taste of freedom?

Stevie see it that way?

[Mama Sass] Yeah, well I'm sure that Debbie made it pretty clear.

But someone in your group wasn't cool with it.

Unless you can think of another reason

why someone would cut the clutch cable on Debbie's bike.

So you're positive that's what happened?

[Mike] It's been confirmed,

and I know that you'd want to know

if someone was capable of doing that in your group.

You're damn right I would.

(tense music)

(bikes revving)

Mama Sass claims that Gavin

knew about the affair, but didn't care.

I take it she didn't offer any insight into who did care.

Fair to say we have a small problem with gang loyalty.

Well, according to Bella Donna,

first rule is Angels don't narc on Angels,

especially to cops.

So what if more than one of them was involved?

Have you ever wondered how many of your friends

would help you bury a dead body, no questions asked?

Can't say that I have.

Let's say Stevie wants Gavin out of the picture.

She sets up the accident, but it all goes pear-shaped.

And enlists her loyal gang mates to help her out.

Well, that would explain why they've all been so tight-lipped.

Nothing bonds a group more than a secret,

especially a big secret.

It would also explain

why none of them are cut up by Gavin's death.

Mike, I have good news, and bad news.

The lab has come back

with the DNA results from the skin sample.

And?

They don't match any DNA on record.

And the good news?

The skin definitely comes from a woman,

which does not surprise me.

Any Angels not in the system?

Well, they're all in the system,

but none of their crimes required any handover of DNA.

Well, my money's on Stevie.

Or Stevie and friends.

Let's locate Stevie.

(pleasant music)

(bike revving)

[Kristin] Someone's letting off steam.

Perhaps if I waved a checkered flag,

she'd come in for a pit stop.

(bike revving) (tires squealing)

(tires squealing)

[Stevie] What?

You're a hard woman to pin down.

- [Stevie] Can't have looked very hard. - Oh no, we did.

We've been wanting to talk to you about Debbie,

so we can do that here, or at the station.

[Kristin] You look upset.

Just the wind.

What do you wanna know?

The night of the pre-wedding shindig

at the Snake and Tiger, what were your movements?

I was at the party, and then went back to the lodge.

[Mike] And you didn't leave the party at any point?

Look, I had nothing to do with Gavin's accident, okay?

But you must've been pretty happy about it.

With Gavin gone, Debbie was free to be with you.

You've got no idea what you're talking about.

[Kristin] You seemed pretty cozy on the couch the other day.

Yeah, cozy when it suits her.

If Debbie genuinely wanted to be with me,

then she never would've agreed

to go along with this sham wedding.

Wait, you're saying that Debbie didn't wanna marry Gavin?

[Stevie] She did and she didn't.

Mind telling us why?

He's a controlling pig.

She wanted to end it, didn't know how,

and it was the baby, and

she was just too bloody gutless to go through with it.

So someone took matters into their-

But it wasn't me.

I swear.

(ominous music)

(camera clicking)

Are you gonna tell me what you're looking for?

That's not how it works, as you well know.

Is this even legal?

- Maybe I should get a lawyer. - You're not under arrest.

We're just trying to rule you out, hopefully.

I told you, I didn't like the guy,

but I didn't cause his accident.

You see?

That wasn't so painful now, was it?

I can't see any cuts or nicks.

Okay.

Gavin found out about me and Debbie about a month ago.

[Kristin] And it had been going on for a year or so?

Help me out.

Debbie was involved with both of you.

She and I got together first,

and then she freaked out

because she didn't want to be out as a lesbian,

and we broke up over it.

[Kristin] Then, presumably,

got together with Gavin on your break?

He was an old flame.

He was keen as to get back together with her, and

I guess they were happy for a bit.

Until you two started seeing each other again?

Well, it was impossible to stay away.

We were seeing each other every weekend, and

on every trip.

Debbie kept saying she was gonna end it with Gavin,

but the closer it got to the wedding, the worse it got.

How can you go through with it if you love someone else?

It's just, it's crazy!

It's all organized.

He's gone to so much trouble.

No, you have to stop this.

What if I don't have to?

What if once this is all done and dusted

we can just carry on, like before?

In secret?

No, if you wanna be with me,

then just break up with him, hm?

Please!

We'll make it work, I promise.

It's just not as simple as that.

I'm having a baby.

I knew she was worried about the baby,

and I tried to convince her that we could raise it together.

But she didn't want that?

She did.

But she was afraid of what Gavin would do

once he found out she was pregnant.

Gavin.

Found the texts, Debbie.

I'm not stupid.

It's nothing, babe.

You're just making a big deal out of the texts.

"I miss you so much.

"You're my sun and moon, Stevie."

Nothing?

Who the hell is this guy?

- It's not a guy. - Oh, come on!

How can you lie to my face?

You're my best friend, Debs.

Please don't do this, just tell me the truth.

Stevie is one of the Angels.

(phone clatters)

It stops now, do you hear me?

Do you hear me?

(pen scritching)

Mama Sass implied the same thing about Gavin.

Mirror chrome rims when paint would've been better.

He sounds like the my way or highway kinda guy.

Do you think Mama Sass could be covering for Debbie?

I don't know.

We don't have anything concrete

that points directly to her.

And given what we now know,

the person who benefits most from Gavin's demise is Debbie.

(rock music)

Lookin' good, lookin' fine

No why we think that you're cheating on your wife

Well I've been praying

To the porcelain god

Hold my hand

Kiss my neck

Every time we make the same mistake babe

I keep praying to the porcelain god

And I can't keep this shit down anymore

What's Stevie doing here?

[Mike] This way.

So, you and Debbie heard about Gavin's plan

to take her bike during the party,

and saw an opportunity to make sure he crashed it.

- [Stevie] I would never do that. - I mean, makes sense.

An accident would postpone the wedding,

and buy you both some time to work out what to do next.

So.

Whose idea was it, Stevie?

(ominous music)

Okay, well, guess we'll just have to ask Debbie.

She's only down the hall.

Is that supposed to intimidate me?

No, I'm just saying if she does say it was your idea,

then it's not gonna look very good for you, is it?

But she won't say that, because it didn't happen.

We never had that conversation,

and we didn't touch the bike.

Any idea who might've tampered with your bike?

Seems like you and Stevie were the only ones

with a good reason to injure Gavin.

Well, this is garbage.

I would never have hurt him.

So you didn't hurt him when you cheated on him with Stevie?

I don't know what you're talking about.

Stevie told us about your relationship.

About how the course of true love never did run smooth.

We were sorting things out.

Are you sure? It sounds like Stevie

was still pretty upset about the wedding.

So what?

Doesn't mean she tried to kill him.

How are you so sure?

[Debbie] Because she's the best person I've ever met.

She'd never do that to me.

Not even if she was trying to save you

from a marriage to a bully?

We know there was another side to Gavin,

a controlling side, a violent side.

That can't have felt good

as you were thinking about your life ahead together.

(officer knocks)

Senior, we've got a situation.

(tense music)

Because of your idiotic harassment,

my sister is now being threatened with violence.

- Okay, settle down. - No I won't settle down!

She told me they came right into our pub,

which is no way meant to be a house of rough and tumble!

I hear you've been narcing to the cops

to get back at Debbie, eh?

I didn't tell the cops anything they didn't already know.

I'll find out what you did.

You know what happens to narcs, eh?

That kind of intimidation cannot go unanswered.

I want it sorted out now!

Wasn't the story that Trudy

hadn't seen anything incriminating?

So, what could she have possibly told us?

Well, yeah.

That's right.

But my point is, she's being threatened.

Did Trudy see something dodgy, Ray?

When she went outside to cool down and count backwards?

Did she see something?

Not that she told me.

Maybe you should ask her yourself.

So I'm free to go, eh?

You are.

Told you.

Wasting my time.

You're free to go, on condition

that you don't make contact

with Stevie Johansson, or Debbie Cusack,

or any of the Mama's Angels group for the next 28 days.

Understood?

Understood.

(tense music)

[Daniel] As I was saying, are we all good?

(door beeps)

(people chattering)

We're here to talk to Trudy.

Well, she's not here.

Okay, come on Ray.

She's not, she's in hiding.

And don't ask me where, because I don't-

Because you're no narc.

Well, yeah, obviously.

But also, I don't know.

So she's not here, fair enough,

but she did see something, didn't she Ray?

Ray, if she saw something.

She won't tell you, it's her code.

I get that, but she might've told you,

and therefore you can tell us.

- Why would I do that? - Because you have no code.

Whoa, steady on.

I know the difference between right and wrong.

[Mike] Good, then do the right thing, Ray,

and help us help Trudy to sort this ugly business out.

(Ray sighs)

All right, but this didn't come from me.

You need to tell me what's bloody going on.

(tense music)

796, 795.

That night when she went out to cool off,

she may have seen someone fiddling with a bike.

Then again, they're always fiddling with their bikes.

And don't ask me which bike, because I don't know.

I'm more interested in which Angel.

I dunno, by the sounds of it,

an average sized brunette one in leathers.

Well, that describes half the bloody gang, Ray.

Whoever tampered with that bike

is at least partially responsible for a man's death.

Think harder, Ray.

Did Trudy mention anything else?

(crickets chirping)

A tattoo?

Yeah, Trudy mentioned that

because it was weird to her, but not to me.

Dilli-something?

As an ex-biker myself, dilligaf is a statement of pride.

An existential point of view.

Aspirational, you might say.

Sheesh, that takes me back

to my full length brown leather overcoat,

and my flying goggles and jodhpurs,

cruising around town I was known as Kawasaki Ray.

(people chattering)

(tense music)

Dilligaf is a common biker's acronym.

It stands for "Do I look like I give a."

Oh.

We just want a quick chat.

I wouldn't if I were you.

Whoever cut the clutch cable on Debbie's bike

knew that Gavin would crash.

And we have a witness who places you

doing something to Debbie's bike that night.

Question is, why?

What was your intention, Tonya Lee?

I have the right to remain silent, you know that.

We also have a skin sample

that places a woman at the murder scene.

It's from a cut or a scratch.

Probably a bit like those.

I work on bikes.

I nick my hands all the time.

If we took a DNA sample,

it would match our skin sample, wouldn't it?

Well good luck getting anything from me.

And if that bitch Trudy told you

that I messed with Debbie's bike, she's lying.

We know it was one of the Angels, so if not you, then who?

If you think I'm gonna throw

one of the gang under the bus, you're dreaming.

They're my family.

Well, she certainly looks capable

of dragging Gavin down to the creek.

Senior?

Ah, Miss Cusack, come through.

I asked you to back off nicely.

Instead you bring my daughter down here for more questioning?

And Stevie and Young Hoss?

[Mike] Well, we are investigating a homicide.

That they had nothing to do with.

I want you to release Young Hoss now.

She'll be free to go, once we've finished our questioning.

Now maybe you're giving them special treatment

because they're ex-crims.

If I come back down here, it'll be with a lawyer.

You're welcome to do that,

but what you should consider is that one of your Angels

has strayed back to the dark side.

Somebody killed your future son-in-law,

and what I find odd is that you don't seem

to want us to find out who it was.

(Mama Sass sighs)

No, no I don't.

Of course I don't.

It's because I think I know why.

I've been worried about her for quite some time.

[Mike] Young Hoss?

She's got a short fuse, impulse control.

When I brought her into the gang,

she was fine at first, but she's got a violent past.

[Mike] And you tried keeping her

on the straight and narrow?

Maybe she needs help beyond what I can give her.

And why would she have it in for Gavin?

She didn't want Debbie to marry him.

He ripped her off in the past.

Dodgy bike parts, or something like that,

but she didn't trust him.

And you didn't share her concerns?

No, but I wished I had've taken them seriously.

This is gonna kill Debbie.

She's one of her closest friends.

Yeah.

Maybe, maybe she didn't wanna kill him.

Maybe she just wanted to hurt him

so that the wedding would be called off.

(tense music)

Mama Sass has just been in

with an interesting story about you.

About how you hated Gavin and didn't want the marriage to happen.

Because he was a bullying pig.

[Kristin] Is that why you tampered with Debbie's bike, then followed him?

You found him at the crash site,

and were shocked to find him conscious and alive.

He pleaded with you to help him,

but you saw the chance to be rid of him for good.

So you dragged him to the creek, and held him under.

What, no.

You pulled on his boots to make it look

as if he staggered down to the creek and fallen in.

But you caught your hand in the zip,

and once we compare your DNA with the skin found in the zip,

we'll have everything we need to prove it.

That all sound about right?

I want to talk to Mama Sass.

She's gone.

Trying to work out how to break the news

to Debbie and the rest of the Angels.

They'll cut me loose.

Well, what's done is done,

but you still need to tell us what happened.

(recorder beeps)

Exactly what happened.

(tense music)

What you said.

Exactly like that.

Because I hated him.

What do I do stand here

All right.

Least we get a formal statement, then.

Stand all day on a concrete slab

My feet are aching don't get a break

Singing what do I do

What am I to do

What do I do

What am I

To do

- Usual? - Yeah, thanks Frodo.

Hey, what's up with the face like a dropped pie?

Bella Donna's leaving this evening.

I thought she was gonna invite me to go with her.

[Daniel] Oh, sorry mate.

I'm beginning to think she only liked me for my coffee.

Aw, I'm sure that's not true.

Well, it was free.

The thing is, Frodo, girls like Bella Donna

have a boy in every town.

Out of all the guys in Brokenwood,

she chose you to hang out with.

Yeah, I never thought of it like that.

But she's still the one that got away.

So, is it just me or was that the easiest cough

in the history of all coughs?

Yeah, I'll admit I'm surprised Young Hoss

didn't put up more of a fight.

It was too easy.

Yeah, she seemed shocked when we described how Gavin died.

It was like she was hearing it for the first time.

Because she was hearing it for the first time.

Frodo, I know it's my fifth one today,

but I assure you I don't have a problem.

Mrs. Baker.

Oh, Detective.

Nice to see ya.

You said that Mama Sass gave you a CD

- on the night before the wedding. - Yes,

but as I said to her,

Gavin had already give me all the music.

Very definite about which track when.

And to be honest, it was all one on of those

stick it in sticky things.

- Memory stick? - Exactly.

Wish I had one of those.

Brain like a sieve sometimes.

Yeah, don't we all?

Where was this?

At the Snake and Tiger.

I popped in to wish the girls good luck,

and I bumped into her on the way out. There you are.

Just popped in to wish you all the best

for the big day tomorrow.

I just popped back to the digs

to get that CD for you for tomorrow.

Oh, but Gavin has that sorted.

I mean, what was I gonna do with a CD?

Thanks, Mrs. Baker.

We're off.

Hey, we'll get those coffees to go.

Young Hoss was nowhere near Gavin when he died.

She agreed that Gavin was pleading for help,

but Gina confirmed

that he would've been unconscious throughout.

I think she cut the clutch cable, but she didn't kill him.

Well then, who did, Stevie?

[Mike] Who would Young Hoss do anything for,

and who was overly protective of Debbie?

(ominous music)

Mama Sass told me herself

that Debbie only ended up in prison

because she was protecting her mother.

Because she was trying to protect me.

And we now know she left the party.

What if Mama Sass was protecting her daughter from Gavin?

Because if Stevie knew he was a bully,

then Mama Sass must've known.

Mama Sass was desperate

to stop her daughter and unborn grandchild

from being tied into a bad marriage.

[Mama Sass] Here you go.

She knew that Gavin was taking Debbie's bike,

and so convinced Young Hoss to mess it up,

knowing that the accident would postpone the wedding.

Bottom line is, Young Hoss would do anything for Mama Sass.

But that's where Young Hoss's involvement ends.

[Kristin] Because it's Mama who leaves the party

on an innocent enough mission.

Hey look, I'm just gonna shoot back to the house

to get the wedding CD for Mrs. Baker.

[Kristin] But that isn't where she's going.

(bike rumbling)

(ominous music)

(ominous music continues)

[Mike] She suddenly sees an opportunity

to protect her daughter for good.

[Mama Sass] Ah.

Then she sets about covering up her tracks.

(eerie music) (crickets chirping)

(water splashing)

(Gavin burbling)

(horror music)

(somber music)

(tense music)

Mama Sass is like the patron saint of broken women.

Hey.

Come here.

She has no tolerance for bullying men,

especially when it comes to her own daughter.

You dodged a bullet, my girl.

I hope you know that.

Mama Sass set the whole thing up

so that Young Hoss would take the fall.

We have a witness that saw

Hoss tampering with the bike, and a confession.

What have we got on Mama Sass?

Hey, dry those crocodile tears, okay?

Yeah?

Let's get outta here.

You guys right? Let's go.

Nothing, unless we can match the DNA to that skin sample.

(lights clicking)

Although with a confession from Young Hoss,

the court will never compel Mama Sass for her DNA.

(kickstands clink)

And there's no way Young Hoss will ever narc on her.

True, but we can get Young Hoss's DNA,

and at least prove that it wasn't her who drowned Gavin.

Although, that will take days.
