This is the best part of the day.

Game plan today is take out the vanities,

take down the wall.

No. Whoa!

I'm Randy spracklin.

Third generation builder, proud newfoundlander!

My team and I are building on one giant cliff

in the Atlantic ocean.

They don't call it the rock for nothing!

We fight the elements year-round

to get the job done.

It might be tough for some, but not for us.

Because when this is your view, it's worth it.

(Upbeat music)

Summertime in newfoundland is short.

So if you get a free moment, you gotta get out

and enjoy all of this!

You know what, it never really gets old

looking out over the ocean.

This is the mouth of brigus harbour.

There's always something to look at.

Problem is, you don't get to enjoy it as much

as you want to.

So, this is brigus.

So, we're doing a special project.

I came up with a good idea.

Why not go to the lighthouse, build a deck?

We want to build a platform

in memory of all the lighthouse keepers

so you can sit on the deck,

look out over brigus, look out over conception bay

and just enjoy the scenery.

Up over this hill, you got to watch out,

because this is where all the fairies live.

Fairies are, I guess little people and...

The name might sound good, but they actually do bad things.

So, if you go blueberry picking or even

if you're going for a walk, you definitely need

to have something to feed them.

If not, you can get carried away,

or they'll take you and you'll be wandering

through the woods for days and days and days.

People's after coming back, not being able to speak.

You know, people's after being brought out in the water.

So, they do unusual things,

not very nice things.

Back in the day, everybody, when they left the house,

they would turn your shirt inside out.

Another thing is, I forgot about, you can curse,

because they don't like cursing so, I guess that's why...

I guess newfoundland is known why you curse like a sailor.

Because of the fairies, you don't wanna get taken.

We made it!

We're here to the lighthouse.

It was a long hike, but it was worth it.

(Upbeat folk music)

Most lighthouses, you'll see red and white.

This is going up and down. Some more you'll look like...

Like a barber shop sign.

When you drive by, you want to make sure

that you've seen the lighthouses.

Hint why they painted them red and white.

It's definitely important to have this lighthouse.

You think, back in the day, there was no power.

So everywhere you looked was black.

This structure that we're standing in right now,

the old house was built 140 years ago.

Brigus kind of became a town in the 1600s.

So, there was many lighthouses all over newfoundland.

That's how we kept all the sailors safe.

You know, if it's a foggy night you don't want to run aground.

So, this lighthouse definitely keeps them safe.

So, that's why we still got 'em around,

they're still playing a big key it's just a little bit

more modern today. Brigus is a place

that everybody want to walk to.

So why not have a little place here

that you can hang out in memory

of the old lighthouse keepers?

Now, we just got to figure out how we're gonna get

material and build a deck out here.

We got to go from brigus harbour,

dock a boat, and then take a little smaller boat,

and come into these rocks and then unload everything.

That's the game plan, anyway.

If it's a windy day like today,

I don't think it's going to happen.

(Upbeat music)

A little more inland,

we're ready to start a really big job

for the hanlon family.

They just moved into a newer home in the area

south of St. John's called the goulds.

So it's a lot different from...

Where I'm from is brigus.

You know, this is a fishing community where I'm from,

and this is farming.

So, a little bit different what we're used to.

You see horses running around instead of fish!

This project is going to be pretty interesting.

This is a newer home, and I love

the older homes because they're challenging.

But this newer home got a lot of challenges too.

So, there's a whole lot to do.

- We love the bones of the house and the overall,

but we wanted to make it our own.

- We're really in love with the area.

We're in love with the outside

and, you know, a lot of space for the kids

to run and play and grow up.

We're really looking forward to making the inside

now a reflection of ourselves.

- So, we're gonna really tear this place up.

- Hopefully. (Laughing)

- For sure. For sure.

- We're gonna do all new floor,

we're gonna make a new mudroom, kinda move your door.

We're gonna dress your little sitting area up.

Make this place look like a million bucks.

This is kind of like a Florida house.

You know, one level, you know, sunroom in the back.

And the way it's all open. It's not what you see here

in newfoundland. So, we're gonna make it

a little bit newfoundland.

The minute you walk in the door

it's going to feel warm and inviting.

The sitting room will have a feature wall

complete with a two-way fireplace to really give it

a cozy feel for the family to hang out.

The spare room at the front will become

the new mudroom slash office space,

with a new entrance, steps from the front door.

In the kitchen, we're creating a bigger island

with a custom drop-down table,

perfect for family meals and big gatherings.

We'll spruce up the main bedroom with a large

custom headboard, but the major transformation

is in the bathroom.

We're gutting the whole thing and starting over.

We're creating a custom closet with loads of storage

and a separate vanity area.

Inside the bathroom, we'll remove all the walls

and create better flow with a stand-alone tub,

large custom shower, and vanity.

Just like the house, it's a big, big project!

We're gonna close up that door. Put in a new one

right there for a new mudroom, because I see you're hanging

your coats when you come in through the front door.

- That was one of the biggest things.

We've only been here a few months.

When we came, there was no closet.

Everything is kind of in the main entryway,

just as you come in.

That mudroom will really be key for us.

- We're also making your office, too.

- I'm definitely looking forward

to having a nicer space to work.

It'd be nice to have something

a little bit more updated for that.

- So, nice desk in front of the window,

so you can look outside, all built-ins.

Nice little bit of storage for you and the kids.

- We'll just have to train 'em to use it.

(Laughing)

- We got it all figured out in here.

Let's go look at your bathroom. - Sounds like a plan.

(Upbeat music)

- Big room when you're just looking up.

But when you're looking down, this tub is kind of

taking up a whole lot of space. Prime area for your washroom.

You still got a whole lot of doors. You know,

there's a door right here to a closet.

Door right there to the shower. - And then you open them all,

they swing in different directions.

When the doors are open you can't get by,

so you're constantly opening and closing doors

throughout the space. - Opening all these doors.

I'm wondering which one I'm gonna win something behind.

(Laughing)

- Yeah, what's behind door number two?

The toilet! (Laughing)

- This tub definitely looks like it's hard

to get into and not user-friendly.

- Yeah, it's a bit of a hazard for us right now.

We got the small kids. I mean, I'm a pretty

tall guy and I can just barely manage gettin' in and out.

You can only imagine little kids up running around here,

they're wet, the tile, it's just...

It's just not right for us right now.

- No. No, seems like a hard tub to get in and out of.

Definitely. And really no windows.

The only windows is behind that wall in your shower.

So to be able to take down that wall,

open it all up, bring a lot of light in here.

Perfect in the mornings.

- I think my biggest concern is probably

my oldest starts school in September,

so really wanting to try to get back

as soon as possible to get in a little bit of a routine.

- Next time I'm coming back is with hammers, crowbars.

- Yeah. (Laughing)

- Chris is like, "yeah, maybe." - No, we're ready.

- We're good? Alright, I'm on the way.

(Upbeat music)

(Randy): To do it all, our budget is 120 thousand.

But that September deadline is just around the corner.

We got probably like three months

to get all this done. It's going to be tight,

but hey, we're up for a challenge.

Every job is different, and that's what I love.

With the massive Reno at the new house in the goulds,

over in petty harbour

is a whole other kettle of fish.

We're adding a piece on the back

of this 100-year-old biscuit box house,

and converting the original main floor

into an open concept kitchen

and entertainment space.

(Upbeat folk music)

- There you go. Opened up.

- And over in St. John's...

Lord dynes!

We're after dealing with a century-old house

that's been fighting our renovation plans

every step of the way!

But we got the structural issues fixed on the inside,

which is a big relief.

It's just one problem after another problem,

so it'll have to start moving forward.

- It's a good sign of progression!

- On the outside, it's a different story.

- So the foundation looks like it was poured

at a couple of different times.

You got your oldest section which would be here,

made up of cement and large boulders.

And then you got your upper section here,

which looks much more modern.

But none of it's original I don't think, to the house.

- We love these old houses because even though

they're cranky, they've got loads of character

and are worth the extra effort.

(Upbeat folk music)

We're into the goulds today.

It's another foggy day.

But we're starting demo, and we're inside,

so it don't matter what it's like outside.

Game plan today is rip out that washroom,

take out that tub, take out the vanities,

take down the wall where the shower is,

where the tile is, break open the wall

where there are two closets, kind of make them into one.

Our game plan is to have everything done today,

demo-wise.

Too easy! (Drill whirring)

We're not allowed to smash.

We started in the washroom because that's where the

biggest demo is. That's where we gotta break up the floor,

move a lot of plumbing, move a lot of electrical.

We got me, Paul,

we got uncle al, al's my uncle!,

I didn't tell you that?! Where you been?!

Didn't you know al's my uncle?

- I guess no one knew that. - No one knew it.

- Lot of people I work with don't know that.

- Al's my father's brother.

- The wisest one in the family, right?

(Laughing)

- Al? He's awesome.

You know, he'll be able to go get whatever

he needs done and you never hears anything from him,

just, "here's the thing," when it's done.

- Now go leave me alone. (Laughing)

Randy was... okay.

Had a little trouble every now and then,

but wasn't too bad. He was mostly quiet

most of the time.

Which is strange. 'Cause he ain't quiet anymore.

(Laughing)

- You have to get a yaffle full.

Can't go through the door empty so you always gotta have

to have something in your arms. A yaffle.

Armful. Back in the day, it was an armful of fish.

Now it's wood. This is the demo moment.

It's the best part of the day. (Laughing)

Yah!

Did I frighten ya?

Easy.

With these newer houses,

demo is fun 'cause you're not

likely to hit any nasty surprises.

But at the same time, you're not gonna

find any treasures.

The tub should come out easy.

Should. We'll see what happens. They want to save it,

so we just can't go in and beat it up.

That'd be the easiest thing.

But hey, we'd like someone else to be able to use it.

- Yeah, it shouldn't be too much to it.

Disconnect the electrical, cut the plumbing, cap the lines,

and should be nothing to it.

(Chuckling)

- Oh!

Ah! Ah!

(Upbeat music)

(Randy): We're into the gould's today.

So, we're gonna rip out that washroom,

take out that tub, take out the vanities,

take down the wall where the shower is.

The tub should come out easy. Should.

High ceilings. Now, with ten-foot-high ceilings,

you figure you had a lotta room to swing.

Ah! Ah!

(Laughing)

I was kind of using my baseball golf swing,

but I was goin' up. Little did I know

there was a wire hangin' down on a ten-foot ceiling.

Every time I go for the big swing!

- Whew! - Oops.

- What's the odds? Should buy a lottery ticket today.

- Geez, don't you listen to dereck? The 10-10-10 rule.

Step back ten feet, take ten minutes

and size up ten things.

- I don't have time for that. I gotta get it done.

(Laughing)

(Panting)

- Oh!

- That's it!

- Close! - It's all them burgers

and chicken fingers. (Laughing)

It's amazing how when you take down all these walls,

how much more light it lets in.

It was a total sin the way that they closed off

this whole space and, you know,

made it so made dark and dreary.

They'll have such a big, nice, beautiful bathroom

when this is completed.

(Upbeat folk music)

(Randy): Just up the road in St. John's,

I'm back at the Robbins' century-old home.

We're about halfway into a big renovation

on the main floor.

The old kitchen's been removed

and will become Katie's new music room,

with enough space for her grand piano,

and a place to hang out.

On the other side of the house,

we're putting the new kitchen and dining room.

It will have a tonne of space for family dinners

or huge kitchen parties.

Now that it's opened up,

time to work out the plumbing plan.

- This is the location where the new kitchen sink

is going to be located.

(Randy): We're using the original chimbley

to create an amazing feature.

And just like us, Shawn, our plumber

loves a good challenge.

- We gotta get some plumbing drains out here.

We gotta get a vent out through here.

It's going to be quite interesting to see

it when it's put in place.

(Upbeat folk music)

I love working on the old homes.

It's interesting to see the history that's hidden

behind the walls and no one else have ever seen

for possibly 80 to 100 years.

You find something new every time you get into it.

It's always neat to see something that someone,

a tradesman, had left behind

somewhere maybe on the foundation.

A lot of people would leave nickels

as a good luck charm.

(Randy): On top of all that, the homeowners want to keep

the old radiators but give them a new coat of paint.

Looks like me, Paul and al drew the short straw

to get them outside and ready for pickup.

Oh, dynes...

This is very heavy. And this is like,

600, 700 pounds. Crazy.

We've got to try to get it out through the door,

in the back of a pickup, and dropped off.

We're gonna put rollers. You want to put that one

underneath that?

The electricians came up with a brilliant plan.

To put pipe underneath the 2x4 to make some rollers.

So we can roll it out the door. Like the Egyptians!

This is our pyramid.

They never fell down yet, so...

Woo! Easy!

Couple of bumps along the way but hey,

we can fix that.

- There we go. Geez, don't go any farther.

Best kind.

Thanks, man! Good idea. Electricians, good idea!

Saved the day! We got it out.

We'll leave it here now

and probably take it over tomorrow. But, hey,

someone want to Rob that, they can have it for the weight.

Upstairs, we've got some heavy lifting to do as well.

The two main bathrooms are about to be overhauled.

Huh, kinda makes you feel like you're under the sea.

Nice cast-iron tub! - It's nice,

we're hoping to keep that.

- We're just gonna tear out the tub.

We're gonna actually put in a shower.

- Listen, I'll leave it all up to you.

This can be a surprise, yeah. - Yeah? Okay.

(Rhythmic music)

I've got Paul and al on demo duty,

to get both tubs out of the bathrooms

so we can get started.

- He's taking away your bathtub, dragon.

- Ah, it's not quite his... (Growling)

Enough of that, is it?

(Rock music)

I'm gonna chop this tub out there now.

I was hoping to save it.

This would have been a great one to reuse somewhere else,

'cause these units be's expensive, but...

You know, can't fit it out, so honestly,

I'm gonna have to cut her out. One piece will be three piece,

before you know it.

- Ready? Go. - Take your time.

- Couple of more.

(Upbeat music)

(Randy): In the fish bathroom, the 500-pound cast-iron tub

has to come out in one piece

since we're restoring it.

Lucky for my crew, we've called in movers for this one!

Rather them than us!

Hey, look! The tub is gone!

That was a hard thing to move.

But hey, this bathroom is looking good.

Electricals' done. The plumbing. The tub is gone

to get refinished. Bring in the new vanity.

We're in good shape.

All we need now is paint and tiles...

And a new toilet.

So, this washroom is coming together now too.

If you never use a tub, custom shower is the way to go.

All we need now is flooring, tiles, and paint.

(Folk music cell phone ringtone)

(Crew): And do a jig! (Laughing)

(Randy): Outside St. John's. In the goulds...

Yeah!

The big renovation at the hanlon's home

has started in the main bathroom.

Demo went well. They are living through this renovation.

We're trying to mess up one part, get that kinda ready

to put back together, move to the next part of it

so we don't have the whole house to work.

Keep the demo contained. (Chuckling)

The big bathroom has a lot of space,

but we're going to make it work better for the family.

We're adding a new custom closet with loads

of storage and a separate vanity.

And on the other side, we knocked out the shower wall

that blocked the windows,

bringing in more light and creating a better space

for the tub and the shower.

It will make this bathroom feel even bigger!

Today is a good day. We got the plumber in,

he's gonna break out the floor. We got in-floor heat.

That's the thing we gotta be careful of.

Get all the drains ran and get all the waterlines ran.

Shawn got three days to get it done.

Electrician's coming in Monday, and then we'll be

able to start puttin' everything back together.

- Rig up the floor here in the centre for our drainage,

centre for our shower. We gotta cut this open,

break the concrete here, remove all this plumbing

and cap this off. Relocate everything.

And it's gonna work out. Mint.

- That's what the shirt says. (Laughing)

(Randy): The beauty about this washroom,

the way they had stuff placed out,

and the way the pipes run, it's not so much

that we gotta breakout to kinda run new.

So, where we're puttin' the shower, it was a sink.

Where we're puttin' the tub was a shower.

Where the new sink is going

is where the old sink was going.

- That works out perfect.

- When do you think you'll have 'er done?

- What time is it? (Laughing)

- Yeah, Shawn is our plumber and we've been doing work

for probably 15 years now with each other.

I really trust him, you know?

Just hopefully he don't have a sprinkler

made in the house when he hits the pipe.

(Mimicking sprinkler) - Lotsa water.

- Hopefully the water stays inside.

That's why you need to get the drains good.

- We'll get the drains good. - All right. Later on.

- See ya, bud.

Randy's had to throw in a few little surprise

challenging projects to me over the years.

I always pick up the phone when Randy calls me.

You never know what he's going to say

on the other end of the line.

Sixty-six.

The main concern now, because it's in a concrete slab

we do have to break up some concrete to rearrange some

of the plumbing. I don't want to do any damage

to the heating lines and if we do,

then we have to do a repair.

This pipe was a bit closer to the original

plumbing than we anticipated,

and we just about hit it, and could have caused a leak.

So, the less damage you can do with this in-floor heating,

the better it is for everyone at the end of the day.

(Light music)

(Randy): In St. John's, ros told me

she wanted the bathrooms colourful,

so we're starting with the cast-iron tub.

The tub is probably a 100 years old.

Just like an old home, it's worth saving.

And a lot of people around the bay agree.

So we've got the right people to do it.

- To do the cast-iron tub fully, inside and out,

the process is a meticulous sanding.

And then what we like to do is actually build up

the casting steel on the outside to give it a smooth finish.

The biggest challenge is trying to get the imperfections

that quite often are there, to give it the best output.

The colour was selected by the customer,

and then that gets put on over a primed surface

and it's cleared afterwards to give it protection.

The feet are an accent of the tub.

It sort of lifts it up and it shows

the colour that they've chosen.

So quite, often they'll do a colour of the feet

that will give it an accent.

Cast-iron tubs now in particular are actually

like focal points of bathrooms.

People want their tubs

because sometimes it's something that passed down

from parents, grandparents or whatever.

But one of the main reasons, people realize

the value of cast-iron as something to bathe in.

A fibreglass tub just doesn't cut it.

It's just nowhere near the same comfort,

the same feeling of when you're actually in the tub.

(Folk music)

(Randy): It's the weekend, so work for me

shifts to some home projects.

Today, I'm starting something special for the kids,

and the old man's on board to help out.

(Singing): Digging in the sunshine!

- You'll never be a singer. (Laughing)

Come on, boy. Get out and do some work.

I think if he had to pick up one rock,

he'd get the excavator. Huh?

- Today we're building a swing.

- That's the plan anyway.

(Upbeat music)

Someone better get this.

Randy got a shovel in his hand. - What?!

Kids want something to play on,

and their birthday is coming up. Two of theirs.

So I figured, why not?

We're doing it for ourself, so it's a win-win.

For me and my dad, we're always going at some kind

of personal project.

Even the kids like to get in on the action.

Wanna come help dig?

- Where is that green shovel?

Chip! Chip!

- There's nothing even resembles work

when you're doing it for yourself,

especially when you have the grandkids around.

- Where you at, shorty?

He got a, uh, looks like a tennis racket,

but it zaps little mosquitees.

(Laughing, mosquito buzzing)

(Upbeat music)

Right now, we're setting the posts.

We're going to put a big beam across,

and then hang three swings.

That side's gonna have a climbing wall,

and that's it for today.

- Yeah, it should be ready to use tomorrow, ready to go.

Hopefully.

Depends on if the flies drives Randy away or not.

(Flies buzzing)

(Choking) - Swallowed a fly.

(Laughing)

Protein, I guess.

- Me and Randy are always doing something

on the weekend.

Especially for the kids.

We don't always see eye to eye.

- No, no, it was eight inches of...

End to end.

- I only got six-inch posts.

You would think something that's eight inches would fit.

- That's a "oops".

Alright, let's go down and get that.

- The time we got to work with Randy, it's still fun.

No matter what.

And especially now when we're doing stuff for the grandkids.

It's even more exciting.

Throw the ball at mom. Throw it!

Whoa, good throw.

- Now buddy, that one's done. Swing away.

- Job well done. - It's a good day.

It's a win-win. - This is so much fun!

(Children shouting) - Today is a special day,

we're gonna celebrate Grady and Rhiannon's birthday.

(Upbeat music)

- Usually birthday parties stress me out,

but this year having it at home it seems a little more simple.

- Yes, boy. - Swing set done, look.

Everybody's having fun on it. That's what it's all about.

(Child shouting)

- I don't think... Did I ever make you swings?

- Uh...

Yeah, I think out in the backyard.

I know I had like, a little playhouse.

Hey!

- Wee!

- Having a party with 11-10 kids,

it's kinda like running the crew!

(Laughing)

- Lots of kicking feet... (Grunting)

- Ahh! - Oh

(children screaming) - It's chaos.

A lot of kids.

They're everywhere!

Oh, candles are gonna go out, probably.

Whoa, nice!

- The kids, they grow so quickly and god,

it's like it's overnight.

- Can I have some?

(Laughing)

This is an exciting time. You know, all the kids

running around, even though you might

have to wear earplugs every now and then!

But it's pretty fun, you know, seeing Grady

and Rhiannon playing with all their little friends.

Fun day.

Birthdays I remember was all good.

Then as you got older, then even more fun!

(Laughing)

(Upbeat music)

(Randy): In St. John's at the Robbins' house,

the bathroom upgrades are in full swing.

Ros wants to give both rooms a modern update

with big splashes of colour.

And to do it, we're bringing in some bold choices

for the floor and the wall tile.

It's going to look mint, and my go-to tiler, Jason,

is up for the task!

- Today, Randy's got us doing a patch quilt!

Basically, we're gonna do the shower

with all the pattern tile.

I'm quite familiar with it, because my mom used to make

patch quilts all the time.

Mom would be proud that i'm doing a patch quilt right now.

I can't wait to show her.

(Randy): Across the hallway in the fish bathroom,

the deep blue subway tile on the walls

has a deep-sea feel.

The install on the walls went smooth!

But the floor tiles, well,

that's a bit more of a challenge.

- We're making flowers out of two different colours

of tile like we have made here.

We'll take some hot glue and make the flower.

It is a little bit of an art form.

The timeline for this is yesterday!

But it's going to take us a full day just to do this floor.

Penny tiles are a pain in the butt...

Because they're hard to cut,

they wanna fall through the saw

when you're cutting them.

It's going to take a lot longer to do this room

than it would with just about any other kind of tile.

In the end, it'll be worth it. It'll look good!

- You know what? Jason, he's a trooper.

Look at the tiles that he had to lay.

From the penny tiles, putting little flowers in here,

to making a quilt. He did an awesome job, though.

You know what? It was a lot of work

to get these penny tiles down, all the tiles on the wall,

the other shower is all done.

So it's looking in good shape. The plastering is finished,

bring on the wallpaper,

bring in the plumbing fixtures,

we're good to go on these two rooms.

Work on the top floor is just about done.

The cat bathroom is really looking catty

now that the shower glass

and the plumbing fixtures are in.

Over in the fish bathroom,

with the tub back in place and the vanity restored,

we're replacing the old fish

with a new fish wallpaper.

It's still got that under the sea vibe,

which is cool.

It's been a lot of work getting to this point,

and I know Sam and Sasha, who helped with the design,

want a sneak peek to see how it turned out.

- I love this house. I feel like it has a really

great newfoundland vintage kind of feel.

It has the huge trims.

It has that fireplace in all the rooms.

That brick wall, it's beautiful.

- I definitely love all the character.

The high ceilings. I love that staircase.

It's really unique. It's going to be a beautiful

large space for entertaining.

It's going to be perfect. Really excited.

(Randy): What do you think?

(Sam): Oh yeah, it looks so good.

(Sasha): I love it!

(Randy): In St. John's, we focused a lot of effort

to finish the two upstairs bathrooms in the Robbins' house

time to give Sam and Sasha a sneak peek

before they help me tackle the design downstairs.

What do you think? - Oh yeah, it looks so good.

- Do you love? - Ah, love it!

- Isn't this fun? Well it was the fish bathroom.

- Yeah! And now it's still the fish bathroom

but it's like a modern take on the fish bathroom.

- A much cooler and nicer red-blue fish bathroom.

- Yeah! - Capelin on the wall?

- It's capelin on the wall! - Capelin on a wall

and a bird just staring at you while you wash your hands.

- That's cause he's waiting for the capelin to fall off.

- Exactly, exactly. (Laughing)

- The blue tiles... Such a great design feature

first of all, because you're going to get messy in here,

it's going to get wet, and we're able to kind of

keep that clean but then it ties into the capelin above.

What a fun space! - Oh!

Feels like you're under the sea.

- Perfect.

Well, I shouldn't say he had a struggle but...

- The tiler probably didn't like us for that one.

- No, it's a little bit of extra work but...

- Sorry! - It just ties in the space.

It brings that red in somewhere else.

- I love it! I think it's an amazing design.

It's such a little touch. It's a little detail.

Everything about this house is little tiny details.

- Well, it's bringing old new. Like this bathtub is old.

This vanity, we refinished that,

took all the paint off of it. - Love that.

- Ros had this really great piece.

It was just like a dresser.

And we were like, this would be a great vanity.

- So, Randy and the team sanded it down, refinished it.

We put a really funky kinda cool blue bowl on top of it.

Ties in. - This one's fancy,

but the other one is catty. Let's have a look at that!

- Woo! - I'm excited.

- So, what do you think of this washroom?

- Yeah, this really came together really nice.

- Didn't it? - What a fun space.

Look at this tile! - The shower room is bold!

It's fun! It's got a little bit of spice to it.

I like it. - It's a lot of pattern,

it's a lot of colour, it's a lot of visual interest

in a small space, which is a lot of fun.

- The wall looks amazing. How it ties around the shower,

nice clean lines.

We even put a new top on. Kept the old vanity

but painted it. - What a difference!

That cat toilet is gone but what we kept was the vanity.

But we changed it up big time. It's a beautiful green colour

with a new brown countertop with the sweetest bowl on top.

This white bowl with like beautiful little detailing.

- Yeah, the vessel sink's got some like,

rippling effect on the side, which is really beautiful.

Again bringing in texture against the wood countertop.

- I love that you were able to save that and just paint it.

That paint colour is beautiful. - So nice.

- The black hardware. - I love this space.

I feel like it's such a fun space, but it's also...

Although the walls have a lot of colour and energy,

it also is a little bit calming. This wood,

the soft tones throughout.

- This washroom worked out so good.

We never changed anything in this footprint.

If you remember, it was an old tub right there.

We hauled that out and made the shower.

So it works out good because it's still the old vanity,

toilet's still where it's to. - Yeah.

- It's great. It's nice to kind of see, because I think

people think you have to completely transform

your space, and you really don't have to.

- It's a great tip. Keep your layout,

and keep what you can.

Paint it, reuse it, yeah.

- You can turn out something amazing like this!

There's still a little bit of work downstairs.

- A little bit of work! - Just a touch!

- Just a tad bit. (Laughing)

- I'm trying to think which one of them

they'll like more, but I honestly don't know.

They're both two totally different feels. Both very cool,

different in their own way. - Let's put a bet on it.

Which one she's gonna like best. No, no, no!

- Fish. I say fish! Yeah. - Fish?

Twenty bucks? Or a feed?

- A feed! - Oh, my god!

- Feed. Twenty bucks says I'm gonna pick this one.

So, let's go find out so I can get a free feed.

- I'm gonna win either way because I'll just go.

- I'll buy your feed. - Thank you.

(Upbeat music)

(Randy): It's the weekend! And up in brigus,

me and my crew are gearing up for an awesome day

at the lighthouse.

- You take the big heavy stuff, Paul!

(Laughing)

- You know what? It's gonna to be an interesting day.

We're here early in the morning. I've got myself,

we got Nikki, we got Paul, and we got the old man.

So the four of us gotta build this bench.

(Gentle music)

There's not a lot of lighthouse that are actually functioning.

So, I came up with a good idea to build a bench

for people to be able to sit down, and some arrows

to show other lighthouses.

So, give back to your community.

A little bench. A little destination.

Fun project!

To make the job a little easier,

me and Nikki did a little bit of prep work back at the shop.

Because once we leave the dock,

travel all the way to the point

and then lug all the materials up the cliff...

It should be smooth sailing for the install.

Biggest concern right now is trying to make it to shore.

Trying to get in with all the gear,

and then we're able to start building it.

Once we're on land, we're good to go.

(Indistinct chattering)

- I always say don't flip 'er on the turns.

Let's hope she don't flip 'er in the water!

(Laughing)

- We're going to the lighthouse! - We're hiking up that big hill

and building a beautiful bench for the tourists

to sit on and enjoy the ocean.

I don't know. I could think of better things on a Saturday,

but this should be alright. - Oh geez.

The tides change pretty quick and the winds picks up,

we would be stuck out there and then we gotta hike back.

Hopefully we can get this in, out, this man can take us

back in today. - We'll get 'em!

If they're foolish enough to jump from the rocks

to the boat! - Oh geez.

- You know what? The weather's looking pretty good.

Pretty calm there now. That's the thing

with the weather, you never know.

See, we gotta walk up over that thing,

go down in the valley and walk right on top

of that hill over there!

- It's gonna be quite the trot to try to get up there,

that's for sure. I'll take the light stuff,

let the boys carry the heavy load!

- Plans are gettin' off now. We got a little boat

coming here now. We're gonna dock her

on the side of this one, load all the gear

into the small boat and run 'er to shore.

That's the plan anyway.

- Come on, spracklin, you can jump her.

- I don't care about anything else than getting

off the boat!

- Don't put her in the lake.

- Geez, don't lose the buckets!

(Laughing)

Geez, someone got bricks in that!

- Gives me the heavy thing!

- You just start walking.

- Put her down, that's all. That's good there, Nikki.

Lay her down flat.

- We're doing pretty good, you know? We're all ashore.

Gear's almost offloaded.

Can't ask for no better.

Nobody ended up in the drink yet!

- See how he used the word "yet"?!

- Anyway. We made it to shore.

- That almost went! - Quick catch, spracklin!

(Randy): We're going to the lighthouse

and we just gotta build this bench.

Anyway. We made it to shore.

Now we just got to climb up over that hill!

- Do we have to go that way? Can I go that way?

You can go whatever way you want.

- I'm going this way, good luck!

'Cause it looks easier! And it's further from the ocean.

- You get in the middle, old man, go up on top.

When I was a kid, I always made my way

out to the lighthouse. I grew up right here in this area.

I always made up a path. Now there's an actual trail

to get to the lighthouse so people go out there

looking at the lighthouse, looking out over the ocean,

watching the whales. Now we're just making a place

for them to sit down and actually relax

before they make that hike back.

- This right here just goes to show

that there's no job too big or too small for Randy.

He'll do anything.

Definitely having a break when we gets up there.

And I thought I went the easy way!

- Not hearing about loading the rocks!

I got all the buckets! Don't worry about it!

You get the heavy stuff up!

- Second trip on the go!

Getting gear up the hill!

My plan worked out good!

- So, we made it!

- Good job, b'ys. - This is a good place

to lay the bench. Look, you can sit here,

look out conception bay, look in brigus,

look up towards holy road, great place to sit down

and have a look. So basically, we got to take the cages,

lay 'em down, fill them up with rocks,

so you'll probably go get the rocks.

Three of us will start laying the cages together,

then start laying the benches on the cages.

Good thing we got it prebuilt, though.

- He wants red ones now. - Listen, buddy,

you don't get to pick your colour of rocks,

you're getting rocks! - There's red rock right there!

(Upbeat music)

Now we got our layout.

- Now we gotta just wait for rocks.

- Geez, we gotta be able to get this back up over the hill.

- Geez, I'll blow away here today!

- Now we'll take turns, 'cause I tell you what,

that ain't an easy job, even though Nikki jumped on it!

(Laughing)

- This is a really great spot. It's my first time out here.

I'm not much of a hiker as much as I like the outdoors,

so...

(Grunting)

- Whoa! Good catch! - Good catch.

- This is the piece of wood that's going in the gabion,

which is going to hold all the rocks.

This is what we're going to screw the bench to.

So, we'll get it in. We don't want to fill it too high.

We gotta put the rocks underneath it.

- Yeah, I want 16,

because if we leave leaves the two-by-six under this,

we're able to screw the two-by-six.

I'm at 16-and-a-half there now, roughly.

It's all about getting it even and all figured out.

There's a lot of moving parts.

You know what? Really windy day.

You almost can't even stand up. Good test on this.

Once we get it all built and get that pole in the air

with all the arrows, if it don't blow away

by the time we gets to the bottom of the hill,

we did a good job.

- Aw the wind, man!

- This pole is gonna be a bunch of arrows on it.

Five, to point to all the other lighthouses.

Now there's over 100,

we're not gonna put 100 signs, we're only gonna put five.

So, sorry to the rest of the towns

that don't have one!

Turn the other way though. - Keep turning, right there.

- No better day to do install than 60 or 100 kilometre winds.

If she don't hold today, she'll never hold.

You're gonna straighten that up, are ya?

- Oh yeah.

Oh lord dynes, look at that! - Ah geez!

- Look at the bubble!

- How about I say good job! - Right between the lines!

- Good job, eh boy? - Right between the lines!

(Upbeat music)

(Randy): You know, newfoundland is known

for their fishing stages.

And if you ever see a fishing stage,

you gotta have a pad to get out to it.

So, it's all made out of wood and then they have planks

inside of it. So, this is basically

like a platform to get to the fishing stage,

and the red is the little gangway to actually

get to the shed. And then we put some signs on there,

figure out where the lighthouses are, all good!

Ferry land right there.

So, it's gonna be pointing that way.

Then we got cape spear, we got bonavista.

We want to be somewhat correct. If someone uses this now

and starts swimming, we don't want them to get lost.

- Geography 101 here today! (Laughing)

- You know what, feeling pretty good.

We got it into shore. I figured that

was going to be the hardest part.

We got it in here. We got it all up.

We managed to get the rocks.

- Hey! - Everyone was pooling together.

Worked out good. - And nobody went swimming.

- We're not home yet. - Haha!

Oh, hey, b'y! - We're not home yet!

So, this is the final touch.

You know, we got locks, we got all of our names on it.

Ten years from now, you're able to come out,

see actually who built the bench,

so, let's click them on and make sure it's mint.

So let's try out the bench!

- Woo-hoo! - Geez!

- This is awesome. - Fine job we did today.

Made it out, got it done.

- Excellent. - Now we gotta make it back.

- Now we just gotta make it back.

- Can you carry me back? - Are we hiking back?

- You can jump in and swim! (Laughing)

- You can give me piggyback ride back too.

- We're gonna have to hike because with the winds

picking up so much and the waves, as you see,

they're white caps, the boat is probably

not going to make it to us. Probably get out here,

but we're not making it from land to the boat.

(Upbeat music)

- Yes cause I'm starved. - You buying the feed?

- No, you're buying the feed. (Laughing)

- We'll make a bet. Who can get back first?

(Nikki): Oh, I'm buying the feed!

(Laughing)
