This last week has been tough at times,

and I think this makes it worth it.

It makes it worth it, yeah, exactly what I thought.

Now the engines are fully burning,

I kind of feel like I'm really to get going.

Bit nervous, cos I don't know where we're going.

For the teams already in town...

I'm in need of a drink, Dad.

...a 36-hour break before they can move on.

I'm hoping the next leg we don't have to go up,

because, A, it's colder, B, it's more remote.

There's nothing there except polar bears. Exactly, so I don't want...

...the first team into Dawson City, Tricia and Cathie, are first out...

Third check point is Banff. At least I know where it is.

Perched in the Rocky Mountains 4,500 feet above sea level

the highest town in Canada, Banff.

A picturesque resort set amongst jagged peaks and glacial lakes,

such as Lake Louise, world renowned for its tranquil, turquoise waters.

The third checkpoint is 2,700km away

in the province of Alberta,

and on this leg, there is a need for speed.

"The team that reaches there in fifth place

"will be eliminated from the race."

Yeah, but we've got 48 hours on the others.

25 and two places haven't come in.

The threat of elimination means that every decision counts.

Their first challenge will be to get out of the Yukon

and back to civilisation by joining the Alaska Highway south.

Next to no public transport means teams face a stark choice.

Hire cars are costly, endangering race budgets,

while car sharing, although potentially cheap,

can be slow and unreliable.

Obviously we had that big spend with the car, we are over budget.

We've got to be careful, haven't we, this one? We do have to be careful.

We can hitch as much as possible.

Then the teams will need to choose the best way to approach Banff,

by traversing the Rockies themselves,

or by circumventing them, passing through Alberta's major cities.

Right in the middle of the Rockies. Oh, my God, that's awesome.

If we did go down the city route,

the transport's going to be more reliable,

but I'd hate to come so close and not actually

come through the Rockies, that would... I'd be gutted.

It's got to be done.

Cos if we go to Edmonton, it's going to be like going to Cardiff.

We need to get out of Dawson

as quickly as we can. As quickly as possible, yeah.

I think people will underestimate us.

Haul backs enable hire firms to move their vehicles between branches,

sometimes in exchange for free rental and fuel.

Oh, my God. If we get an RV we don't need to bed and board,

cos you can sleep in the bloody RV.

It could be game changing.

You can completely drive from here to Edmonton in 28 hours,

if you don't really stop.

Going to the gym, when I used to run on the treadmill

I used to have, like, private wars with people, without them knowing.

That is a long way to go. I mean, this would have been an ideal time

to have a car, wouldn't it, but... It's going to be so expensive.

Yeah, that's why we need to get a lift this morning

so that we can get to Whitehorse early afternoon

and then we go straight down to Watson Lake. We need to move quick.

I'm anxious, I'm nervous, I'm under pressure.

It's a challenge to get out of this city, it's kind of the Dawson vortex

and I've had friends who haven't been able to get out for months.

But me and Micky, I think we're in a really good place,

and beginning to gel as a team,

and I feel like this could be the beginning of something.

I'm just praying we get a lift.

If we was here all clay it would be soul destroying.

I think we knew the elimination was coming. Yeah.

And we're in fifth place at the moment, so, urn... Doesn't bode well.

having spent more of their budget than any other team.

We've blown the budget on the first two legs,

but we could catch up by renting a car.

So, pick up a hire car at Whitehorse, down to Edmonton,

drop off the car. That would be crap from my perspective,

because I would really like to see Lake Louise,

which is on the other side.

This is the knockout stage, all right? Yeah,

but also please be aware that that is the one place

that I wanted to go since we started this trip.

Right.

Kevin's objective, the city of Edmonton,

is on the other side of the Rockies to Claudia's must-see Lake Louise.

If common sense prevails as it should do,

and if we do see an opportunity to get in front of the other racers,

then I think we'll take that.

But then equally if there's an opportunity to see something,

then I want to take that.

We've got the hire car, so we need a paid job definitely,

cos that paid job will hopefully pay half of what we're going to spend.

I know her brain is fantastic, full of great ideas but...

...this is a different ball game,

this is about using your life skills.

This is serious shit,

get rid of the heart, now start thinking with our brain.

My clad always has to have the last word, always thinks that he's right.

We'd better get through if we're doing this,

because I'm missing out on the one thing I came to Canada to see. OK,

but that's what I'm saying is, we can't afford to go there.

I really hope that on this trip he'll listen to me

and hopefully make some joint decisions on this.

Tricia and Cathie first met aged 13,

when Cathie's family moved from Plymouth to Aberystwyth.

I was really worried about that first clay in the new school

because I'd been bullied previously.

I didn't know whether I would make friends and I remember

and he was like, "What's the matter? What's the matter?"

And I said, "I had a really nice clay."

Ancl obviously with Trish it became a very special friendship.

While the leaders sit still...

I am draining out the bodily fluids, of which there's lots of it.

...Monique and Ladi have reached Grande Prairie.

In all honesty, I would have liked to have got further,

but I can only be so many hours on the road.

But a break from driving does not mean a break from the race.

Ooh, there's a tampon wrapper on the floor.

There's nothing wrong with cleaning at all,

there's a long line of people in our families that have cleaned

for a living and it's just something that you just have to do sometimes.

Following up on an ad in the job's directory,

they're pulling a shift at a local barbecue joint

in exchange for some readies and potential perks.

This means that if we need to have a great push at the end

to get to Banff, then we'll be able to splash the cash to get there.

And, hopefully, we will be fed barbecue.

Amazing.

It's not the worst, but my foot's really, really hurting.

Monique is moving into another phase of her life,

she's finding her feet in terms of her career and world of work,

before you know it, she might be getting engaged and married

and children, and then, you know,

that time with her will not be the same,

it will be a different dynamic.

I think this race will be almost like a last hurrah, just us,

while she's still my princess.

and think that she can just conquer the world

knowing eventually we'd play each other.

The other sport was tennis,

he trained Michael to be a double backhander drop shot player

and trained me to be a forehand hard server,

so... completely opposites working against each other.

Unfortunately, it's also had a knock-on effect

with who we are as people.

My dad passed away when I was 20

and then Micky went off to uni and I stayed behind,

but never dealt with the whole losing my dad,

I just put it into the back of my head

and me and him just didn't spend time together.

We didn't talk to each other about it, we just left it.

So, this is kind of like healing for you both?

the brothers decide to bed down

in the great outdoors for the first time.

There's not going to be many bears round here, it's a populated area,

so for you, it's a good first introduction to camping.

Rising unexpectedly out of the wilderness,

North America's northernmost large city,

the capital of Alberta, Edmonton.

A perfect place to spot the Aurora Borealis in the wintertime,

and in the summer enjoy up to 17 hours of sunshine a day.

This is it. Done 2,000km which is the longest I've ever driven

in 48 hours, really.

It's within striking distance of the checkpoint -

but Zainib and Mobeen will have to cover the final 400km

under their own steam.

This is literally the last bit to get to the checkpoint.

Originally a fur trading post,

now the bustling focal point to the largest of seven national parks

in the Canadian Rockies, and just 290km from the checkpoint in Banff.

Let's just hope that we haven't just missed the bus.

We have one bus every day, it left at 1:35 this afternoon.

Ancl that's the only way to get to Banff? Yes.

We're a pretty remote town.

It's an elimination round and we need to get...
