soars high into the andes,
crosses vast deserts,

world's most volatile regions.

that that could have been us.

And I'm not really
ready to go home.

We need to learn from this.

To lose that amount

quickly it can be taken away.

2,000 kilometers
away, Quito, in Ecuador...

The second-highest capital
in the world, at 2,850 meters

above sea level.

It is also the closest
to the equator.

To reach it, the teams
must travel through the cities,

jungles, and mountain
ranges of Colombia

as they enter south
america for the first time.

But there's a more
immediate hurdle...

Crossing the notorious Darien
gap, a dense area of jungle

stretching 160
kilometers that connects

central to South America.

It's considered the
most dangerous place

in the western hemisphere.

Ruled by paramilitary
groups, the teams

will have no alternative
but to navigate

around this lawless terrain.

I would have quite liked
to cross the Darien gap.

we could die, so.

9:00 am, 12:00 noon, 3:00 pm.

If we can get
on that 3:00 pm one,

everyone's going to

Caribbean coastline,
lies the small port of tupile,

where the teams can catch
a boat and bypass the Darien

gap to enter Colombia.

A big part of this adventure
is to spend as much time

with my mom as I can,
as she's one of the biggest

parts of my life.

home, but in five years' time,

you'll be doing your own thing.

So I suppose I'm grabbing
onto him before he leaves,

and having this
experience before he goes.

So we have to get a boat.

There's only three a day,
and we two have missed it.

Dom and Lizzie would

we're bypassing one of
the most dangerous parts

of the world, the Darien gap.

side, it's just loads and loads

of tiny little paradise
islands with palm trees,

white beaches, and blue water.

And it is nice just to go
in-between the two of them.

The total journey
time from tupile to capurgana,

the first town across
the Colombian border,

is eight hours.

I have literally no idea.

For all we know, we
could be in Jamaica, so.

of their destination.

With unrest spreading, an

shutting Ecuador's borders and
making travel to the checkpoint

I'm a little bit
scared of horses.

I quite fancied
going to Cali

because Cali is the
salsa capital of Colombia.

It's a nine-hour bus today to
Medellín, and then from there,

we go to Cali.

Jo is aiming
to travel straight to Cali,

420 kilometers beyond
Medellín, all on buses.

Most of the time
I'm enjoying the race.

But then quite a lot
of the time, I'm not.

It's just like you go
through highs and lows.

And I think with eight
weeks I will struggle.

Going from Panama
to Colombia on a boat,

going from the islands
and the beautiful water

was absolutely amazing.

But then stuff like doing the
nine-hour, 10-hour bus ride,

I get so bored because
there's nothing to do.

And I can't deal with that.

So it's not pleasant.

Do you think it's got
anything to do with your adhd?

It probably does.

I don't know.

I've never been able to
explain why I'm anything.

When I adopted Sam
when he was six months old,

he was very hyper.

And he was quite
disruptive at nursery.

And in fact, the
nursery owner said,

did his birth mother drink?

And I said, well, yeah, she did.

And she said, oh, I've just
seen children a bit like Sam.

We went off and did
a little bit of research

and found this condition
called fetal alcohol disease,

or fetal alcohol effects.
