But mine is a letter
to my baby sister.

Dear Nikki, you're being born
into a world that's still

trying to figure itself out.

You see, I go to a school where
almost no one looks like me,

where they teach the words
diversity and inclusion

and put my picture
in the brochure

but still crop out my story.

They'll love your smile
but fear your tone.

They'll touch your curls but
never understand your crown.

They'll say you're
not like the others

and expect you
to say thank you.

I want you to live
in a world where

being Black or a girl or queer
is not a contradiction

but a celebration.

And if that world
doesn't exist as you grow up,

I'll keep fighting so it can.

Until it hit me

just how much
they always show up for me.

I was theirs from day one.

They gave me advice,

taught me it was okay
to reach for the unimaginable,

that I could belong in spaces
that weren't built for me

and still be me.

They showed me how to reinvent
myself and still stay who I am.

They reminded me
to use my voice to speak up,

to call things out.

They watched my back when
I didn't know I needed it.

And they knew
what was best for me,

even if that meant
letting me go.

But the most surprising
part of this all...

The brother I never asked for,

the brother I couldn't stand,

the brother I can't
imagine life without.

growth happens
when we're uncomfortable
