Until 1969, Marseille's School of Fine Arts,
is located downtown, in the Palais des arts, Place Carli.
It then moved inside a campus,
built on the outskirts of town,
near the Massif des Calanques, called Luminy.
The architect, René Egger, designed the building.
The School of Fine Arts is composed of a central courtyard,
behind which are located stairs
that follow the natural slope of the hill.
They lead to different workshops.
There's one for clay,
one for iron,
for silkscreen printing,
for photography,
and one,
two,
three,
four for painting and sculpture.
The young lady you see here is me.
I mean no, it's not really me.
We hired an actress to play my role.
Most of the students live downtown
where there are many bars.
They like to meet there to spend a large part of the night.
The nights are sometimes as full as the days.
And the discussions as long as the walks.
Right near our school
is another building.
It is the school of architecture.
A footbridge connects the two schools.
If we pay attention to it,
we notice it isn't very used.
As a matter of fact,
students from the two schools don't have classes in common.
We share the same library.
But it is not the best place to get to know people.
We can also run into each other
when going to the school of architecture's cafeteria.
Want some water?
This scene was shot at the school of fine arts' cafeteria,
because it wasn't possible at the school of architecture.
Hi.
- Hi. - Hi.
- Did you get my message? - Yes.
- Can we talk a minute? - Yes.
I didn't know you went out with him.
What are you talking about? I don't.
You can tell me.
Well, no...
We just met downtown, he was taking pictures on the old port.
He's very nice.
Admit you like him.
No. I mean, I don't know. Maybe.
- Be careful, though. - Careful to what?
Not to throw yourself into the lion's mouth. He's got a reputation, you know.
A reputation?
I heard things about him.
Apparently, once he got what he wanted,
he disappears.
You don't hear anything from him.
Even if you call, send messages...
He doesn't answer.
Who told you those things about him?
It's Sandrine.
Sandrine?
She's a friend of Julie's.
I don't think you know her.
She went out with him...
He made her believe in the great love.
She was crazy of him.
And from one day to the next...
Nothing!
How do you mean?
Well, nothing!
No more signs of life.
She ended up running into him near the school
and he acted like they didn't know each other.
It was hard for her to get over it.
She said he'd done that with other girls.
- It's Sandrine who said that? - Yes.
So that's only one testimony.
I'm not going to be suspicious on behalf of one testimony
from someone I don't know. - Just remain alert!
I assure you that talking with him
I was struck by his sensitivity.
He's very mature.
Very calm. It doesn't match your description of him.
Far from yesterday's schools,
students can give free rein
to their imagination.
But some students
rather get their inspiration from what's under their eyes.
As for me, the most important
is to get inspiration from what we live.
Do you often leave the radio on?
I don't like entering a silent place.
Is it a rent or your own place?
It's a rent.
Is it expensive?
It's okay.
You've got a nice view.
...only because men lost habits
and were like drunken people.
And what's new about the modern ones,
starting from that modern turning point,
that I locate in the 18th century,
is the reversal of this issue,
that matches the reversal of the Western metaphysics.
Which is the moment when
passions are being freed
And they'll be freed, especially...
Sure you don't want coffee?
I don't drink coffee.
I don't need that to wake up.
And do I look tired?
No. Do you want a hot chocolate?
No. Do I look like I drink chocolate?
Did you see my other sock?
It's here.
See you tonight?
No.
- I'm sorry I have a family meeting. - Okay.
And tomorrow, you're free?
I don't know.
You don't know?
Yes, let's meet again.
- At 5 PM? - Alright!
I have an idea.
Do you know the botanic garden?
That Sandrine who told you these things about him,
maybe she imagined things.
He never called her back. It's a fact.
Maybe she scared him.
She's very sweet.
It doesn't mean anything.
When a relationship is being consumed,
we see things in the other that we didn't notice before.
It can be things we're afraid of, like I don't know...
Obsessions, anxieties, odors.
Maybe he saw in her something that scared him.
Then why would he have disappeared without explanations?
I admit it wasn't very chic, but maybe he was afraid of hurting her.
Or maybe he told her something she didn't want to hear,
so she made him look like the bad guy instead of questioning herself.
It's easier to blame others than to face reality.
- Hi Célia. - Hi.
- How are you? - Fine and you?
Good.
You don't know Aurélie, a friend of mine.
- Hello. - Hello.
It's Sandrine!
We were talking about you.
- Talking of me? - I was telling her that...
That you lived in the same building as Sophie.
You're a friend of Sophie's?
Yes, a little bit.
So you're the one sharing a flat with Max?
No.
Because I remember your face.
Well...
- See you! - See you!
- She's the Sandrine with Olivier? - Yes!
What a crazy coincidence, I talked of her and then...
But you see...
She's a perfectly normal girl.
I don't see what he could have been afraid of.
I'm sorry, the bus was stuck.
It's okay.
Why are you looking at me this way?
Because I like you.
A lot.
And you?
Do you like me?
I don't know.
What should one do to seduce you?
A chocolate eclair.
I'm slowly working my way up.
I get to your wonderful feet.
And then...
I get to the treasure.
There's still some?
I was scared you wouldn't like me.
See you tomorrow?
Yes.
- Will you be there? - When?
Tomorrow.
Of course I'll be there. Why do you ask?
I was scared you wouldn't come today.
Really?
Yes.
Why?
Because of your reputation.
What reputation?
Of leaving girls without notice.
I've never done that.
It's nonsense!
It's true?
Sorry.
What about not leaving each other?
What if we stayed together?
I don't go to my training to stay with you.
What do you say?
I don't know. I have work tonight.
I'll be next to you so if you want someone to kiss, I'm there.
- Meet back here at 4 PM? - Alright.
I'm sorry I have to go.
Wait, wait!
I wanted to tell you...
See you later.
- I have to go. - Okay.
It's about the accident.
There's the accident and when something happens...
During classes, students,
alone or by group,
talk about this and that with their teacher
about their artistic work.
When coming back from Canada I was trying to stop doing performances.
We learn to always question ourselves.
And we know that certainty
is the enemy of truth.
Hello. It's Olivier. Please leave a message.
...that everything possible would fit,
and even what's impossible, next to reality.
...that seems he wanted to
achieve perfection that...
Hello. It's Olivier. Please leave a message.
...live in the heat.
For her, only life at its maximum
of intensity was worth living.
And when she had...
I left you messages, you didn't even answer.
I'm sorry. I was focused on my project,
I didn't mind my phone.
- I hope you're not mad. - No.
I thought you were focused on Olivier.
Did you see each other again?
No.
He offered me to go to a concert but I didn't go.
Why?
I didn't really feel like it.
You seemed to like him.
I said that out of provocation more than out of attraction.
Did he call you back since?
Yes several times, but I didn't call him back.
I'd be embarrassed to run into him at school,
because it was rude of me.
It's not because of what I told you?
Let's say it mattered.
I'm touched you followed my advice.
It's normal to trust friends.
I have to confess something.
I felt bad about telling you all this about Olivier.
Maybe his feelings for you were sincere.
Maybe he'll change attitudes the day he falls in love.
I acted suspicious when in fact,
I don't really know him.
It's not because someone misbehaved once
or even several times,
that we can draw any definitive judgements.
You see what I mean?
He deserves a second chance.
Maybe you missed out on a love affair because of me.
Don't worry.
I have no regrets.
I know I'm still young,
and that life's ahead of me.
But I am sometimes scared to get lost
and to take wrong directions.
A teacher reassured me, by saying
that it isn't the directions that matter.
But to live fully every detour we take.
