Original subtitles

At times like these, the beginning of a school year,

it's appropriate to give a speech of welcome. Oh,

I'm not sure that's appropriate in this instance.

I think a speech of warning would be more to the point.

I think you all should be warned and then told where the exits are.

And you could all run for your lives , if you don't already know it.

My name is Philip Tenhouse, and this is my wife Margaret.

And on behalf of both of us and the staff, we wanna welcome you to Harrad.

I'm very happy to see that you've all, most of you, at any rate,

have met your roommate, and I hope that in the short time that you've had,

that you've found to be people that you'd like to know better.

The question that is written on some of your foreheads and is palpable in the

room right now is how were these selections of roommates made? Well,

the answer for the time being, at any rate, is going to have to be,

they were made very carefully,

and you're gonna have to trust us in this matter. This year.

We're all of us gonna be embarked on an adventure into the unknown?

In technical language,

it would be called a controlled group experiment in

pre-marital relations,

but in real language, simple language.

It's that we're going to be exploring ourselves through

others. Now, during this year,

you're going to be expected, not really expected.

You're gonna be encouraged to have sexual intimacy as a

necessary and good element in the art of loving,

which we feel is not only physical, but spiritual.

We're gonna be asking some very difficult questions,

and hopefully we'll get some answers. Questions like the words, adultery,

fidelity to one partner, exclusivity in marriage.

Are these words operative in today's society,

or are they inoperative? Is love with a stranger,

satisfactory or unsatisfactory?

Can a free society remain truly free without a constant

renewal of its values? Now,

we don't claim any originality in this quest. I mean,

it's been going on for centuries. Socrates said, by all means, get married.

You get a good wife, you become happy. If you get a bad wife,

you become a philosopher. .

This year we hope to find that it's possible to have both those elements,

the intellectual as well as the physical. In one marriage.

You will, of course, during the course of the year,

have the option of changing your roommates,

but that's gonna be limited to once a month,

and it's gonna be an inflexible rule, no exceptions made,

because we feel very strongly that one month is the minimum amount of

time necessary to get to know another human being. Well,

that's about all I have to say, except good luck to all of us.

Margaret.

Well,

I'd also like to welcome you and to answer a question I've heard many of you

asking each other why so small a class.

We felt that during this first year especially,

our chances for success would be far greater with a small select group. We,

of course, hope that in the future, enrollment will assume a normal level.

You are the charter members.

Our door will be open to you at any hour for consultation or to help with any

problems that you might have. Please feel free to come and see us.

Please do. Are there any questions? Yes.

Dr. Ted Hausen. I have a question.

Yes, Simon. When do we eat?

How do you think it went?

Hmm?

How do you think it went.

Phillip? I think it went very well.

Yeah, we're on our way, honey. The first day,

Margaret, do we know enough? You know,

as I was talking to the kids, I kept seeing Valerie Latrobe.

Every time I think of that girl, I get the shakes.

And she tested out so well in the written mix. Oh.

Thank God for the personal interviews. That girl had been accepted.

10 minutes later, she would've been screaming rape and running.

And 10 minutes after that,

the board of directors would've been down on us with tar and feathers.

John Cosworth never would've allowed that.

Oh, but there's a limit, honey. There's a limit.

How many more Valerie Latrobe's do we have upstairs? Right now?

You weren't at that second board meeting. You know,

not only were they not gonna give us the money,

but I was being accused of being a sex fe,

having a master design for undermining the morals of America's youth.

They're tied of the past. They're afraid most people are.

Well without John Cosworth, we wouldn't be here today.

That speech he gave defense of the project was pure Daniel Webster.

He believes in you. He knows a new concept always carries a great risk.

Philip, we have the best professionals in 26 years of experience between us.

Yeah, we do. Don't we?

Sheila, come in. Oh, yes. Sheila, I'm sorry to disturb you. It's all accident.

Would you like a glass of wine? Oh, yes. Thank you.

You getting settled? Mm-hmm. .

Has my roommate called or anything? No,

but I'm sure he is on the way. Well, do you think something's happened?

Like he changed his mind or something? Sheila, he wouldn't do that.

We expected some of the girls to change their minds maybe, but not the boys.

Oh, hi. Yeah. I'll do everything with you. Me?

Oh yeah. Fantastic. Uh, oh. Listen,

I gotta go now. Uh, I'll see you later.

A bunch of crap.

How you doing in there? What I say? How you doing in there?

Are you okay? Oh yeah. Fine. That's good. You can come in.

Oh, there you are. How you doing in here? Fine. How you doing?

I've just been outside checking out the place, seeing, uh, everything was okay.

And is it Oh, yeah. Yeah. Everything seems to be, uh, okay.

Do you want me to leave? Leave that? No, no, no.

I want you to stay. I mean, if you're not finished yet,

I could go in the other room if you wanna do something. No, listen,

living together, we'll probably be doing a lot of this. Right? Right. Uh, so we,

uh, I as well get used to it. Yeah, I guess so. Sure.

You know, it's funny, when I first saw you today, I thought you'd be stuffy.

You know the kind of guy who lines his books up according to height? Nah. Never.

Is that what you thought? Yeah. . Isn't that silly?

Uh, what would you do if I turned out to be like that? But you're not.

I know, I know. But let's just say that I was. I think I'd like you anyway.

I'm going to bed. You can stay, uh,

just a little while longer.

Can we.

Figure out the room stuff tomorrow?

Uh, sure.

Tomorrow.

I wonder if 10 Hausen expects us to sleep together tonight.

Well, I know.

Harry.

Yeah.

You do line your books up according to height, don't you?

Yeah.

You don't have to play games.

You.

Sly God, you do that.

I be you for a fuck every time. Hey, pardon me?

Is is that the road to her out there? Yeah.

Two and a half miles straight up the road. Can't miss it.

Oh, well. I was out a cigar.

I didn't know you smoked.

Oh yeah. A couple of years now. It, uh, helps me relax.

So, uh, what kind of guys are you used to?

What do you mean used to?

Uh, I mean, what kind of guys do you usually date?

Oh, arsonists, smugglers, thieves. Guys like that.

What do you think I'd do? Someone I get along with we're computerized.

You know?

Did you expect someone like.

Me? Well, no, I didn't expect someone like you. You see,

I knew that they put similar people together and I thought to myself, self,

my God, I don't wanna get a girl that looks like me.

Are you disappointed?

No. No. I'm not disappointed. But you must be though. I mean,

I'm sure you didn't expect.

The creep You think you are.

I just thought if you were gonna put yourself down so much,

I'd see if I could help. Isn't that what a friend is for?

I guess it pays to know your friend.

Harry, why don't you put out that dumb cigar?

You're only gonna make yourself sick.

Why do you do things like that? Just be yourself.

I wanna know you.

Guess. I'm just not the type of guy who goes around laying every girl he sees.

That. I, I I.

I.

Don't have much experience at this.

Somehow I sense that.

What do you expect me to do?

You're grown up now, Harry.

We'll do what you want.

Keila Grove.

No.

I know you're not.

It's Stanley Cole, aren't you? You're not. Sheila Grove next door.

Listen, we try to be pretty hang loose around here, but when the door is closed,

it usually means something private is going on.

Be a lot easier. If you took your pants off first.

Hey, you.

Hey, you got a license for that?

I'm the second floor monitor. You should be in bed.

What are you? Some kind of weirdo.

Hello?

Hello?

Hi.

You're Sheila Grove. Yes, you Stanley Colt.

Nice to meet you.

It's nice to meet you.

So, uh, what's happening? Did I miss much? Just the first.

Meeting and dinner.

.

Oh yeah. Dinner

and you threw in there.

Oh yeah, sure.

They passed out the schedules yoga class. First thing in the morning,

seven 30 in the nude. But you don't have to go if you don't want to.

If you talk to Dr. Shepper

and human values class in the afternoon, that's all for tomorrow.

Hey, who's the couple next door about Terry and Beth,

how come you're late?

What?

Nothing.

Well.

I hope like hell, 10 s isn't pissed.

Oh, is it? All right.

Sure.

I'm so goddamn tired. You coming to bed?

Um, yeah, in just a minute.

Okay. Talk to you in the morning.

Uh.

Oh. No physical exercise hasn't right in place. That is the issue.

Well, I wouldn't worry about it. Wilson, Sheila feels the same way you do.

And 10 houses said she could lay out a day or two, didn't he? Yes.

He said I could. If I went and talked to Dr. Ebner about modesty.

I don't want you to think I view my body as a shrine. Nothing as medieval as.

That. Well, that's good. That's, that's very good.

Wilson. I simply find it questionable. Done in this matter.

You simply don't want anyone to see you naked.

And am I to assume my personal needs have no bearing in this?

What else besides personal needs is the issue here?

Why don't you talk to Dr. Ner about it like I'm doing? Well,

I'm going to the library. See you in human values.

Class.

Okay? Hmm. Listen, um, Barbara,

how do you feel about all this?

Oh, I don't mind. I think it fits right in.

Well there, Wilson. You see.

My objection is not to the concept of exercise. As a matter of fact,

the Latin principle of Inc. Concordia ance at Corpus is quite valid.

But I think the requirements that all exercises be performed in the nude is

dictatorial, to say the least.

Well, I think we should learn to view our bodies without embarrassment,

without any Victorian sense of, of guilt or modesty.

Ah, come now.

Don't you find it rather p that we're informed of such a requirement after we've

already gotten here? Uh,

I think the degree of disrobing should be left to the individual.

Now, you may be right there, Wilson.

I just find it rather difficult to compromise my sense of judgment in this

matter.

Well, I don't see why your body can't be as shrine when certainly Barbara's is.

Oh.

Wilson is so modest. It's not so much a question of modesty.

It is a matter of aesthetics. Well,

I'll see you later. Where would.

Where.

Would one find this? Dr. Shep's office. One.

Would try the main floor right next to the infirmary.

And then through the chest instead of just breathing shallowly through the

chest. Okay. Everybody ready? Taking all the energy. Take the air around you.

Take a deep breath slowly, slowly through your nose.

Rotate your hands. Take the energy in from the ground

through the palms of your hands, through your fingertips.

Take all the energy in from the sun.

Suspend your breath.

Yeah.

Push all the toxins down and into the earth.

Take all the energy in from the earth.

Stretch out this time rather than up. Open the back.

Suspend your breath.

Okay.

All right, let's, everybody hold hands. Okay,

we're gonna pass a couple of zooms around. But remember,

you've gotta make contact. It doesn't count unless you make contact. Okay, zoom,

zoom.

Zoom.

Zoom, zoom, zoom, zoom, zoom, zoom, zoom. Right zoom.

If you're on the zoom, we're gonna go real fast this time.

Make contact.

In the Polynesian language.

The word for marriage means to try in the English language.

The word for marriage is wedlock. Now,

in spite of the suspicious sound of that word,

civilized societies have taken on a one-to-one relationship of wedlock as the

proper arrangement between man and woman. Now, this may be proper,

but it's also inflexible. And as a result,

people in wedlock tend to depend upon each other for all of their emotional

needs,

as if one person could satisfy all the needs of another in or out of marriage.

But don't you think that's a possibility?

The two people can completely fulfill each other? Well, Sheila,

that's society's ideal. And certainly this relationship can exist.

But more often,

rather than sharing and meeting the needs of another

marriage means two people sharing only their loneliness together. Hmm.

My parents should be here, .

Well, and in many cases, this has worked control of families,

of children, of responsibility, but it's also a legal contract.

What's wrong with the legal contract? Well, the contract can imply ownership.

Ownership implies something to be jealously regarded.

A jealousy under these rules is sometimes regarded as being good.

It means you care.

And so a destructive emotion like jealousy becomes a feeling worthy of

expression. Now, in reality,

we know that jealousy is repression and frustration.

Unfortunately,

these feelings are sometimes idealized by young people under the notion that

these are signs of romantic love,

assuming that marriage is based on these strange ideas.

What is the proper approach? Alright,

should the approach be a string of affairs, conventional marriage,

group marriage? I think before we decide,

we have to root out some archaic attitudes. Uh.

Excuse me, Mrs. Tenus.

Margaret.

Uh, excuse me, Margaret. Archaic attitudes. What do you mean by that?

Oh, hate, jealousy, possessiveness,

feelings of inadequacy. Some forms of guilt,

destructive attitudes that we have come to accept as being normal.

I think we all agree with that and have gone beyond it to some extent.

We wouldn't be here, do you? Sure. Sure. Yeah.

I think we're a pretty well liberated group. Do you all agree with that? Sure.

That's great. That means we can move a little faster in this thing.

We're gonna the using a device in these classes from time to time,

called the improvisational technique. So let's get with it right now. Stanley,

Sheila, would you stand up please? Harry Beth up.

Please don't be frightened by this at all. It's a very simple technique and, uh,

we're gonna try one that's not complicated at all. Now, in this exercise,

we're gonna deal with one of the facets of the word love. Well,

we're gonna deal with that word a lot in these classes because it's one of the

most powerful influences in all our lives. Now, this one's gonna be simple.

It's kind of a tuneup. It's going to be a pretend situation. And,

but I want you to function in that situation as honestly as you can,

okay? Mm-hmm. . Okay? Alright.

Now we're gonna have to get a little more space.

So let's get this table outta here, Stan, right?

Excuse. Good.

Well, I've never done this before. I know why I'm nervous.

I don't mind telling you. I'm a little nervous myself. .

Now, in these pretend situations,

we always use all the truth that's available to us. Now, one truth is that, uh,

Sheila will be with Stanley and that Harry will be with Beth.

Another truth is that you've known each other for one day.

Use that I think you've come to know each other at least reasonably well. Now,

the pretend situation is that all four of you're gonna go to a dance.

Stanley's bought the ticket. Oh, wait a minute. I forgot something already.

Sheila. Harry, come with me.

Now. When the dance gets started, I want you to, to dance with each other.

Now, when I call an end to the exercise, I want you to ignore me.

You understand that? I want you to go on dancing as though I've said nothing.

The reason for that is you're going to pretend that she's turned you on during

the course of the exercise,

and you are going to pretend that he's done the same to you.

So when I call an end to it, don't pay any attention to me.

Just use terms of endearment to each other. You'll hold each other close,

but ignore me. Okay? Right.

This is after you say, stop.

That's right.

And they don't know that we're gonna do this.

Well, no, of course they don't.

But I think they're gonna see right through that.

Well, of course they're, but I'm gonna get their initial reaction to it.

Okay? Okay.

Okay. Don't expect much when I'm really acting something .

Just have fun with it. Come on.

Let's go have fun.

Alright? Now you're on your way. As I said to a.

Dance, uh, Dr. 10 Allen. What? I don't think this is gonna work too Well,

why not?

How about if Beth is with me and Sheila and Harri are together?

Why?

No reason. I just think it'd be better. Well.

This is supposed to be real life, and that's not real. That's.

Right. Well, I know that Harry, but okay. Okay.

Okay. Nevermind. We'll do it the other.

Well, I'd like to know why you wanna do it your way.

No, it doesn't matter. It's just an idea. Well, I'd kinda.

Like to know myself. It might be better.

That's dumb. Dumb.

He isn't dumb, Stanley. Tell them.

Okay,

Beth wants to leave Harry and move in with me.

We were gonna talk to you about it later,

but I thought for the purpose of the exercise.

God dammit. Now she didn't even give me a chance.

Look, Harry, I know this isn't the time, but man, you kept after me.

No, I agree. This isn't the time we'll talk about this. No.

No, no, no, no, no. I wanna talk about it now. Do you really wanna do that?

Well, Stanley thought it was a good idea.

Well, Stanley thought.

Oh, come on Harry. Don't fall apart, man. You know,

this is gonna be happening a lot here. We're not gonna be the last.

Don't give me that crap. I saw in yoga class this morning.

I saw what you were doing. You only want one thing from her.

Now wait a minute, pal.

No, you wait a minute. I saw you looking at her. I even saw you smiling at.

Her. Hold it. Everybody hold it. Thank you, Stanley. Very well done.

Harry. It was all part of the exercise.

.

Right?

But how did he know to say that?

Well.

Dr. 10 Ien told Stanley when they were moving the table.

And then Stanley told me when he was talking to you and Sheila.

.

Just.

Play acting. Not a word of.

Truth.

Play acting.

Horse piss. Harry, I'm sorry. I,

I victimized you. I want you all to know that I will never,

ever do that again. I.

Hope not .

But I had to prove to everybody or try to through you that there's not

one person in this room that is truly,

truly liberated.

You almost came to blows with Stanley over a girl that you've known she day.

Have I made my point?

Hi.

How'd you like to help me move in?

Sure.

Keep reading honey. You'll get there.

You won't.

You'd like it here?

I don't know.

There. What in the hell is that?

It's Gorkin.

Oh, is it a boy gorkin or a goil? Gorkin. .

Well, it gets stubborn and mean if you don't feed him on time.

So it's definitely a boy.

Good. He can keep my little lady's company.

You like Beth, don't you?

Yeah, I like Beth fine. I like you fine.

Here, lemme show you something.

What is it?

Magic.

.

You can't get 'em too close together. Or some of them would die.

Kinda like people, huh? Sure as hell wouldn't make it at this joint, would they?

Okay, listen, do me a favor. Close that shade, would you?

I'm gonna have to regulate the light. Okay?

Okay. Now for the magic elixir,

my own special formula, you know, calcium, water and vitamins.

If you give 'em too much, I'll go right through the ceiling.

Would it be good for gorkin too?

Yeah. Put 'em over here. Give him a little squirt.

I.

I'm sorry.

It's okay. Come on, let's get to wet.

What's the matter?

Do you like a girl who makes it right away?

Yeah, if I'm the guy.

Do you think maybe we could wait till it's right?

This isn't right.

Dr. 10 Sen thinks relations with strangers are unsatisfactory.

Well, not always.

That's what he said.

Yeah, but that's 'cause he forgot about the Eskimo.

What?

The Eskimo. See, when a stranger goes to visit an Eskimo,

he gets his wife for the night.

Now that's the friendly thing to do and it's bad manner to refuse.

I don't think it's better to be strangers.

Oh man.

If you really want to, I will.

If it's important to you.

Is that better? Yep.

Yes. Thank you.

How come you wear that?

Oh, no, no, no, no. Don't cover yourself. You are beautiful.

You knew this Archie.

How the hell did you get the hair?

That's a good question.

This can be a big responsibility. Look,

let's hold off on this for a while.

Stanley. I really want everything about us to be right.

I, I can see that.

It's important to me.

I don't think I'm looking for that kind of thing. Do you know what I mean?

I think we'll go talk to Dr. Tanhausen about, uh, some classes I wanted to take.

Yeah, here it is. Okay, I'll see you at dinner. Why are.

You going?

Well, if I stay here, I won't be able to concentrate.

I'll be thinking about you.

Is that so bad.

Right now? It is. Yes.

Would you rather be with somebody like Sheila?

No, I think I'm very lucky you have gotten you.

It's just that sometimes I think we're all in the test tube here with 10 hours

walking around saying you will perform and you feel enjoy it.

Harry.

Yeah. Guess that's not too fair.

You know, you could use a little more self-confidence.

Yeah, I could use a lot of things.

Then why haven't I asked for a replacement?

I don't know. Beth, why haven't you?

Because I trusted 10 Hausen to make a pretty decent choice.

And I think he did.

Yeah. But it was still his choice, not yours.

His choice got us here after that. It was my choice.

Hurry, grow the mustache.

Okay. Okay. I'll grow the mustache, but it'll tickle.

Well, maybe I'd like to be tickled.

You'd like to be tickled then Come here, Harry.

Sometimes I think I'm a very sensuous person.

Yeah.

I remember one winter when I was little,

I drove off all my clothes and ran out to the backyard. Snowing like hell.

Drifts four and five feet high.

I started to dance around in the snow until I wasn't me anymore.

I was the snow. And the snow was me freezing cold.

But I didn't care. Didn't you catch cold? I think I did.

Oh.

I thought you were.

Wilson. No, I'm not.

Oh, yes. I can see.

You're aamp collector.

Yes.

So why? I have a whole set of us plate blocks at home.

Everything except the dag hammer sold issue. You know the inverted one?

Sure. I know that one. I have it.

You do? Well. Can I see it sometime?

Sure. The whole set, huh?

Yeah. Oh, well not, not all of 'em. Not all the way back.

Some of 'em get pretty expensive, you know.

Yeah.

Wilson told me that you were studying marketing here.

That's right.

So am I. And what you see,

the thing is I have to register tomorrow and I was hoping that maybe you

could tell me what courses are best.

Well, sure. Let me see.

By the way, where is Old Wilson?

Oh, he's at jogging.

He decided to lose a little weight.

Oh, now that's terrific.

We're all here to see each other's minds and bodies in the most beautiful way

possible, aren't we?

Yes.

Is that the one you were looking at?

Yeah.

Tanika 1968.

Yes. How did you know the year?

Oh, I dabbled a little in foreign countries.

That's terrific.

You certainly don't need to lose anyway.

Neither a you, you.

When will Wilson be back?

About an hour.

Do you remember the presidential issue of 1957?

I have some of that.

Did you ever notice the air in Jefferson's face?

The booklet pain issue?

Oh, the coil.

The coil. You have one of those two.

Two.

Yeah.

I can only assume Stanley,

that you think what you're doing is only in keeping with the spirit of Harriet.

He came in to talk about marketing.

And that I am expected to embrace that spirit and feel only joy.

You're trying Wilson. And and that's the important thing.

I've always been a man of peace, but I'm still a man of honor

is pleading. Uh, thank you.

What happened to your jogging Wilson.

Blisters? I couldn't run anymore.

I'm sorry, Stanley.

No, no, it's okay.

It's okay.

Well.

So I'll be going.

That was wonderful, Wilson.

Oh.

Well I talked to Sheila and she's been trying really hard to break loose.

But it's just that Dr. She hasn't been able to reach you yet.

I haven't even seen her on the floor.

Yeah, I know. Look, we just gotta give her more time. She's getting there,

but she just needs a little more confidence.

I'm glad you're so patient, Stanley. But,

but are you sure her is the right place for me behind her?

Well, 10 Hausen thinks that this is an experimental laboratory.

You know what happens to monkeys in experimental laboratories

now if we don't wrap the legs together, they'll come apart there.

What do you think?

It's fine.

It's fine. What do you want me to do, Sheila? Put 'em back like they were.

No, it's all right.

The thing I like best about you is your wild enthusiasm. See you later.

I'm going for a swim.

You made it this far.

I'm trying.

Yes you are.

I've got no reason to be ashamed.

Hear an absolute miracle.

If you stay this close to me, you gonna turn me on?

I maybe gonna go for running around nude here,

but I don't think anybody's done it in the pool yet.

Now either we start swimming or we start.

Well, I see you're giving up the old Harry College track. That's about all,

but don't worry about it. It was hard for me too. Thank you. It's okay. .

She's gonna be fine still. You just gotta give her a little more time.

That's all. I know exactly how she feels. Naturally.

I'm over it now. But at first I had the,

the damnest notion that with all these naked girls walking around,

I might just get a little worked up and maybe, uh, uh, stick out.

You know? Yeah.

Yeah. Sure. I've thought.

About that once or twice in myself. Yeah.

Well it almost happened to me in exercises. No kidding. Yeah. Well,

at first they panicked me. Then I got this terrific idea.

I started thinking about Marybell Rhodes and Bam. Who's Marybell Rhode. Oh,

my high school math teacher. No way.

You can get worked up thinking about Marybel Rose.

.

I that you haven't by any chance changed your mind about what?

About coming home. My folks would really like to meet. Oh, Harriet. I'd.

Love to,

but could we make it some other weekend to have that report due in history?

And I have to read that book that Dr. signed,

but we'll do it next weekend. Maybe.

Good boy, you.

He thinks it's gonna work for the whole damn world. Well.

Why not? Dr. Tenon thinks we can change ourselves.

Oh, sure he does. Sure he does.

If he picks the roommates and he sets a one month rule and he says we have to

run around naked, he's got himself a brave new world here.

Who knows? Maybe just likes to see a lot of naked, young bodies running around.

And you.

Don't.

Harry, you don't exactly concentrate on exercises during exercises. Well,

neither do you. What are you talking about?

That's got nothing to do with anything.

What difference does it make? We all look at each other.

We are naked for God's sake. It's natural.

And if 10 Hausen turns out to be a 30 old man,

he's no worse than the rest of us.

Well, no, he's got Margaret. I wonder if the one month rule applies to Margaret.

Screw you. Stanley.

Do I have your permission?

I'm not Harry's property, are you? Sheila's property.

How are you two Getting along. Oh, fine.

Is he the greatest thing that ever climbed in the bed? Well on. You see,

I couldn't know. Well, God damn,

that's not the way it is. Stanley's helping me.

Maybe there is something to you, Stanley.

But you still don't feel right about it.

That's not it, Stanley.

I mean, it's not you.

My plans are gonna be up in a couple of days.

That's pretty quick, isn't it?

Yeah.

These little ladies on care. Comfort, encouragement.

Love.

Not to mention sunshine, water and vitamins.

My wife should be so lucky. Or a roommate.

Yeah, you can have four drops. That's all I can spare.

Do you ever think you love somebody, Stanley?

Yeah.

Not right away.

Oh shoot.

You don't wait for someone to give himself to you before you start moving with

him. You jump right in and take your chances.

What if it never happens?

Well, so what? So what if it never happens, then it never happens.

If I'm not right, then you can find somebody else. It's, it's no big thing.

Just still wanna make a mistake.

No, you're already making a mistake. What? You only see so much,

it's, it's like you got tunnel vision.

Leave me alone.

I get the feeling that you've been saying that a long time.

Do you know a female alligator lays a million eggs at every

spring?

No, I don't.

And a male alligator comes along and he eats most of the eggs.

The top of me. Never. No.

That's awful smart.

Why.

You realize that? If we didn't come along and eat those eggs,

we'd be up to our ass. And alligators. .

I'm thrilled the way my mere presence brings out the poet in you. Salmon.

No, I was just thinking

how animals don't get all hung up over loved the way people do.

Well that's not true.

No.

No leopards. For instance, if a leopard's mate dies,

the other one never takes another. Sometime he grieves so much,

he just stops eating and dies.

No kidding. That's.

Right.

Sheila would make a great leopard.

I think you'd make a great alligator.

How can you say that?

Just a wild guess. And I've known you a few days.

By the way. They're good.

Yeah. What.

Shooting marbles this.

You make a great bunny route now. Hey, wait a minute. Wait.

That was supposed to be a compliment.

Yeah, I know.

You gonna uh, you gonna tell Harry?

Of course.

You aren't afraid of nothing. Are you?

Well, I respect him. I'm not gonna lie to him. Are you gonna tell Sheila?

Are you kidding? I have a dead leopard on my hands.

You're kind of quiet today.

I'm thinking about you. What about me? Well,

like why you said yes that first day when you really didn't want to.

I guess I did that. I want you to run away. It's that sort of attitude.

It can send a man running faster than anything I know.

Well, that's progress.

If you can do it with Thera and cheese is half price. If not, you pay me double.

Hey Jack. It can't be done. It can be done. Alright? Now is there a trick to it?

A trick? I don't know. More like the Lord Nature. I think it's .

I bet you spin it the right way, the way it'll be at one end.

And you could stand it up. Yeah,

but it's still round on both bottoms don't matter.

It's got something to do with the weight. Now. That's gotta be it.

What are you gonna have? Uh, squab and wild rice is on a special today.

We'll just have a cheeseburger. Get some season besides Squaw.

Makes me burn . Hey Jack. How about a little service over here?

Be right with you. I'll be right back. Don't cheat cheese. I, how can you cheat?

Okay, kids one, do you have Alex's gonna have a couple of cheeseburgers and uh,

two cups of coffee. Two cbs, two seeds. Jack,

what's going on with that egg over there? If you can stand it on end,

you pay half price for your meal. If not, you pay double.

Ought to be a cents for a smart young fella like you. Sounds fair enough?

We'll get the egg. I'm a physics major.

Physics major my mind. Stanley,

you not a physics major. Whatcha

well, how many tries do I get, Jack? I give you a three.

Does it matter which end? Either end

These kids from Harrad Smart as whips.

See, I told you that's how it's done.

Okay.

I've been had your son. So old nature.

You could have a green come by. Let's go.

You are beautiful.

So are you. Listen.

I gotta go to.

The.

That's a good trick.

So you're from her. Hmm? I bet you can do lots of tricks.

, forgive me. I really should have introduced myself. I'm Sidney Bauer.

Please. Could you go away? My friend will be back any minute.

Oh yes, your friend.

It brings a girl like you with a joint like this and orders cheeseburgers.

Let me show you what a good time is really mean.

Of, please, Mr. Bower.

Sydnee. I didn't get you. Alright,

I guess all I really need to know is that you're from Har, right?

What does that mean?

Everybody knows what that means.

No, everybody doesn't know.

Oh, well cut the crap, miss Purity.

That school up there is teaching sex. I'm willing to pay the price.

Listen, Mr. Bauer, that school is teaching kindness, compassion, patience,

understanding things you probably laugh about at stag parties.

All you want is a female body. And that has nothing to do with me or Harrad.

You are a dirty choke Mr. Bauer.

Very good. Run along.

So we're talking business.

Alright, let's talk business. You want the girl, right?

50 Bucks.

And I like that cake.

Why should I deal with you?

I could make trouble.

Okay, you've got it.

Come on. Hey,

a cheeseburger

Stanley.

Whatcha doing?

Hey, uh, sunny. Six 50.

And the cave. There you are. Come on honey.

Come on.

It's all right. Go.

Ahead Stanley.

Don't worry. I.

Stanley, where are we?

You forgot your purse.

Alright, let's get your purse.

Get in.

God, you are getting to be a big responsibility. Oh.

You could've left me there. Yeah, I could've.

Can we make love tonight?

Listen, you don't owe me anything.

It's not a payment of debt.

Yeah. Well I think it is.

What is it? I decided some things about myself.

Maybe you're phage owe me something.

You got any ideas yet?

Yeah. One.

And it has nothing to do with Maslow or the psychology.

Now wait a minute. Wait a minute. This report is due in two days. Oh, but.

Maslow likes peak experiences. Spontaneous action.

But only if they're real. You know,

I think the only people who really have pure spontaneous action are kids who

haven't yet learned how to build up any defenses.

Yeah.

What I'd really like to do,

I'd like to meet the kid that I was when I was five years old,

because I think he's the only person on this planet who knows who I really am.

Yeah. That'd kind of be like starting all over, wouldn't he?

Well, sure. It'd be like turning yourself inside out.

And who the hell knows how to do that?

Like this hair hurts. God. What? . Well, look at it,

Stanley. It's a miracle of creation.

There's a thousand living cells in there relating and interacting.

You just think that hair comes from a creature that is absolutely

unique. I mean, you're an amazing person.

You're singular in the history of mankind. Well, I.

Okay, so to understand that kid that I, when I was five years old,

I gotta see the world in a grain of sand and heaven in a wildflower. Yeah,

Blake.

Wow. If we could really do that, I mean, we'd be on our way.

Oh, why would, that's it. That's the idea.

There. That's it. I.

Mean, we could start with that quote.

Yeah. What you do is, wait a minute, what time's your next clock?

Three o'clock. American.

History. I got English lit at four. We gotta move. We got.

Time. That's right.

That.

Quote. It's just like that one doctor 10 out fast today. But Maslow said.

We talked about you.

Very thoughtful.

Harriet. Doesn't mean I don't care for you.

Tenhouse would be happy to hear you say that.

You should be happy too.

Beth. Your honesty makes me happy, but your judgment is killing me.

Hi you guys. I've been looking all over for you. Hi Sheila.

Stanley and I are going on a picnic. You wanna come?

Stanley wants us to come.

Sure. Why wouldn't he?

Uh, no reason.

How are you and Stanley getting along this weekend was the turning point.

I think.

It was.

Oh, you were away. Didn't Beth tell you what happened? Yeah,

Stanley and I are closer now than ever.

I think I'm really beginning to see what Harrad means.

What's the matter? You too mad at us or something? No, Sheila.

I think it's wonderful. Oh, thank you. You gonna come? What time?

In about an hour? We'd love to Okay. Meet you. The front steps. Okay.

She love all people.

Don't you feel silly?

Yeah. It's always the quiet ones. Why is that?

They're often more mature.

Well, if she can do it. So can I.

Ah.

Oh, she's tall. Oh.

Bunny jo.

Yeah, she's pretty good.

Here. Sheila. Check it out.

You know, I think 10 Hausen expects something to happen among all of us.

He's really been pushing it in human values class.

I know. I'm really excited to be here. I didn't think so at first. Even.

You know, I had some stuff last year that was, uh,

said to be tended by the Shaw of Persia. Yeah.

Supposed to come from his own personal garden. He should have tried that stuff.

And it knocked your socks off.

You know, Sheila,

I still can't get over how quick you got into the whole Hart philosophy.

It's amazing.

Well, Stanley helped me a lot. .

Well, you've helped me a lot too. Yeah. Jesus.

I really feel dumb now when I think about how I acted,

when Beth told me about her and Stanley, of course you guys did bend the rules.

Little after all. There is that one month thing.

I don't understand.

What about Beth and Stanley.

Getting.

Stanley?

I was gonna tell you about it tonight.

Comfort, encouragement.

Love.

Love.

Wait a second. I, I thought you knew all about it. You said you did. I mean,

she did.

Say she did, didn't she?

I didn't know Harry.

Damn. Hey, step

Sheila.

Say what you came to say Stanley. And leave.

Oh, come on. How the hell do you say something like this?

It's easy. You just say, Sheila, I'm so sorry. I'll never do it again.

Sheila. I'm sorry. I'll never do it again.

Yeah. Very good. Now go.

Sheila. I said I was sorry. I meant that.

Oh, I see now. I suppose the salesman goes to work.

God.

Dammit. Don't you think I have any honest feelings at.

All? Don't you talk to me about honest. You and Beth Hillier.

Beth Hillier has nothing to do with you. Well, maybe.

Not, but lying does.

How do I know you haven't been laying every girl in hair that would listen to

you? Maybe I'm six or eight on you list. Maybe you keep it short.

I don't know why I didn't tell you it was dumb.

That's the most guilty thing you've said so far.

Maybe you do have some human feelings.

I don't know.

Seems like a long time since I felt very much of anything.

I don't quite know how to handle it.

Sheila, if I had to tell you what I was doing here, I don't know if I could.

But here I am.

Jesus Christ. Maybe it's better if I don't feel anything at all.

How many other girls were.

There? There weren't any other.

There was one Barbara, and then I didn't do anything.

'cause Wilson walked in on me.

Is that what you got the bloody nose?

Yeah.

You are the first boy I was ever close to.

Just about the first human being.

I guess really caring about someone is dangerous.

I guess it is.

Sheila.

Can we forget the thing about Beth?

Hi Stanley. I looked all over for you. Do you have any more classes today?

Yeah. Biology. How about you?

Economics. Hey, listen, Stanley, I'm.

Sorry about yesterday.

I love you once.

Oh man. Don't worry about it's, just forget it, huh?

Yeah, but I hate to have you think get on the kind of go.

Hey, I told you. Just forget about it. Besides, it's not your fault,

it's mine.

The Ace Trucking company's over at the Ice House.

How about you and me going over for a couple beers? Sure.

Repent. Yeas. Sin

judgment as near you can be saved.

I was, I was a jealous woman.

I going from town to town, city to city,

never sleeping in the same bed two nights in a row.

Hallelujah.

I was a wicked wanton woman

going from man to man. Never satisfied.

I drank and I smoked. I, I sw naked from chandeliers.

Oh, oh. The moonlight.

The moonlight used to Glisten is the sweat poured off my naked breasts,

my thighs,

my thighs quiver with the life as men.

Thank you.

Thank you. We appreciate that very much. We're gonna move, uh,

writer swiftly into the, uh, second part of our show, which is improvisational.

And this is where we, uh, ask you to, uh, come up with an idea for a scene.

And then we try to improvise something based on your idea. And, uh,

we work in an area we call Pet Peeve. So if anybody has one,

just yelling out and uh, we'll do something. Pet peeve, group marriage,

street walking. Group marriage. Uh, don't we, uh,

have some people here from the Hart School? Yeah.

There are some people here from Hart School. Uh, listen, I have an idea.

We don't know too much about it. Uh,

could could somebody from the school come up and sort of advise us and maybe be

in the scene? Is there someone who would like to do that? Cynthia?

Yeah. Come on. You go ahead on.

Get up on, come on, come on.

Come on, come on.

Have a nice hand for Cynthia.

Okay. Is that the school where the guys have girls for roommates? Yeah,

that's right. When I was in school, my roommate was a shot putter. Oh,

is that right? And a street Walker. . That's enough of that,

Greg. Okay. Um, why don't you, uh,

go over with a group over there and join them over there.

We'll try to come up with an idea, I think here for, uh, group marriage.

We have an idea. Okay, here we go.

Oh, Cynthia. Hi. Hi. How are you? Good. Okay. I'm sorry. I'm not ready yet.

I'll be with you in a minute though. Okay. Oh, hey,

I just wanted to drop by earlier.

I wanted to really find out what was happening around here. You know, Mrs. Uh,

Tenhouse and, you know,

back at the school said you really had a great group marriage. Yeah.

She heard about it. . I haven't been this happy since I was a kid. Yeah,

I really wanted to see it. But, uh, doesn't it take a lot outta you? Well,

I get a lot in return, you know, it works itself out. bad. Oh, good.

Morning. Good morning, dear. I'm sorry I was so restless tonight.

Oh, I'm sorry, dear. I'm sorry. There's nothing for.

Breakfast. That's all right my dear. The Lord will provide.

So really, really, you haven't met Cynthia? Hello.

Blessing. Welcome to our house. He's.

Just very spiritual. He fills all my spiritual needs. Oh, Billy honey,

good morning. What's the matter?

What's the matter?

No, I cried all last night after that little talk we.

Had. You shouldn't get so emotional over things. Bill, I'm drained. You are?

Huh? I feel like a rag. No, you look fine. You're a little puffy. Oh,

am I ? You haven't met Cynthia, have you? No, she's right behind you.

Dear. Oh, this is Cynthia, my husband, bill. Hi. Hi. How you do?

Very emotional. He takes care of all my emotional needs.

He understands women so well. Emotional job, Michael.

Good morning There.

Up early. Hi. Yes.

How are you dear? Fine. Listen, there's a book that I want you to read.

I thought of it last night. Uhhuh and many loves of Fatty are Buckle. Oh,

that sounds, oh yeah. Oh yeah. That sounds.

Great. You haven't met Cynthia, have you? No, I haven't. This is my husband,

Michael. He brilliant one. Very nice to meet you.

I am intellectually taken care of. You got, um, intellectual, spiritual,

emotional, physical needs. What do you do about physical needs?

Dingdong.

Come in.

Nope, man.

Hey.

Make the word adultery, for example.

Now it's a power word in our society. God knows. Now,

what is the onus that is attached to the word adultery?

Is it in fact that society through the agency of the spouse fears that

she or he is being rejected by his or her mate?

Or is it fear that that spouse that commits adultery

is simply sharing his or her love with another partner,

possibly at two or three or four?

Now we happen to believe that that is not only possible,

but absolutely necessary. Now,

we all know,

I think every one of us that a human being has to have another person

and has a need for another person, be the center of their lives.

But if that contract is so exclusive and so

restricting and imprisoning,

then what we do in essence with that kind of contract is draw the curtain on

life. And we tell the world in effect that we cease to grow. Now,

Nietzsche tells us that if the values of a

people change,

society must meet that change or face stagnation and decay.

More succinctly stated. You're talking about group.

Marriage, Diane. That's right Wilson.

But there are many more problems than the spiritual and the emotional.

But wouldn't that take a lot of emotional reconditioning? I mean,

say for instance, I'm married and have three wives.

Now I don't find that a disagreeable idea. ,

but that would mean that I have two other husbands to contend with.

It's interesting you use the word to contend with, but you're right. Of course.

That's why we're here. We wanna find a way.

I don't.

Know. What don't you know, Sheila?

Well, it's not that I disagree with the principal. I mean,

I guess that's why I'm here.

But I just can't imagine sharing the man I love with anyone or anything.

Sheila, would you say that you're possessive?

No. I wouldn't call it that.

No, I agree. I I wouldn't call it that either.

I think I'd call it consuming Sheila. Look,

what if the man, your man,

what if the quality of his love is not the same as yours?

What do you mean quality?

The nature of his love. You know, we give love.

We usually expect,

or I feel demand our love be returned.

The same kind of love that we have given the same quality. Now,

what if your man's love is not the same as yours?

Well then I don't see how he could really care for me.

Now, you wouldn't be losing him. You understand? I mean,

he'd just be committing himself to others as well as to you.

Mind a personal question? No, no ones.

How can you head up a school.

Like Harrad and teaches philosophy when you're rather exclusively married to one

woman?

That's a good question. Wilson,

Margaret and I worked at it and I think I'm balanced rather successfully.

But we got to understand something that just one couple would not be

scientifically meaningful. We'd had to have controlled experiments.

But more than that,

you've also got to understand that Margaret and I represent the past

and you represent the future. Dr. Tanhausen, I have a question. Evan,

could it hold until we're gonna talk about this some more tomorrow.

But in the meantime, would you all try and get with, uh,

O'Neill's Summer Hill There copies for all of you in the library and see you

tomorrow. Sheila, uh, Stanley,

see you moment.

I just want to commend both of you for the fine work you did on that report.

You both turned in on Maslow's book. It was good work. Thank you.

I've been thinking of assigning other projects to roommates to work on together.

You think it's a good idea? Yeah. Yeah.

It's probably a very good idea. Yeah. Say to you,

play badminton. Badminton.

Margaret and I are gonna play a couple of sets this afternoon.

Wonder if you'd like to join us. Well,

it's okay with me. I don't know if Stanley. Yeah, sure.

It's okay with me if you want to. If you don't want to. It's all right. No,

I didn't say it wasn't all right. I said it was all right. Alright.

Alright. See you in about now.

Alright, play another one. Give you a chance to get even, get even.

We're gonna demolish you this time. Alright sir? Uh.

Why don't we have some ice tea?

Oh, we haven't got enough. We've gotta get back to the office.

Hey, how about we change partners this time?

Bless the old carrot spirit Stanley. Alright fine. She you wanna take 'em on?

Good.

Good.

No thanks. Thank you.

Was Wilson outta line with that question about you and Margaret Wilson? No.

It's a normal question. Bothers.

Stanley. If Phillip and I were younger, we'd probably be students at her.

Does that answer it for you?

It says it. Come on. We've gotta hurry. Let's go. Sheila,

come. Okay, here we go. Bobby served.

You.

Got the put on Stanley. I've got the bird here. Let's go. Alright,

1, 2, 3. There it is. That's it.

No honey, honey. You all right?

Yeah. Fine. Oh, thank you sir.

Alright. Didn't go over enough up. One, two.

Hi.

Hello Stanley.

Margaret. Um, I'd like to talk to you if you're not too busy.

Certainly. Would you like to go to my office?

No. I guess I'd rather walk, you know, fresh air and all fine.

Of course.

Sheila talks to you a lot, doesn't she?

Yes, we've talked.

She talk about me.

Mostly about you.

Well, how does she feel about me?

Well, there's some problems, Stanley.

When did she tell you everything?

Pretty much.

How do you feel about it?

Oh, we're talking about Sheila. Not me.

. I know, I know, but I'd like to know how you feel about it.

You broke some rules.

Do you mind?

Yes.

Well, why didn't you do anything about it?

Because Kailynn thinks that you reformed.

What do you think?

I think you ought to tell me the real reason why you wanted to talk to me.

How long have you and Phillip been married?

12 Years.

12 Years to each other. All that time.

Why do you wanna know ?

You're a very attractive lady.

And you'd like to add me to your list of conquest.

What?

But with all that boy's charm and irresistible sex appeal,

you thought I'd be easy, didn't you?

No. No. That's not the way it is at all.

Listen, why not run off to the weeds with a swinging wife,

with a swinging director and knock off a face? ? Why took it so long?

I don't know. . I guess I just didn't think of it right away.

Boy, you never know.

No, you never do Not till you try. Where should we go?

I don't know.

In there.

There's so much more together than most of the other girls here.

Well, most of the girls are still looking for their place in life. I found mine,

Stanley?

Yeah. What's the matter?

I've got an idea

standing. Why don't we do it right here?

Right here? Yeah, it's right here. But we're out in the open. I mean,

the building is right back there.

Oh, that's all right. You know, sometimes when Philip and I are at a party,

we get into a hammock over the swimming pool and turn all the lights on.

No, you know,

I can't think of a better way to exemplify the real freedom of Harrad.

Come on Stanley. Get those clothes off. No,

I'll let you do this. That's the way we do it.

Come on Stanley. You don't have the balls for this.

You could get your name on a plaque.

Alright, I get it.

Do you,

you know, you came to Harrad thinking this is going to be a sexual gymnasium.

Lovemaking to you is like a stallion. Mounting a mare Stanley,

real people make love with their minds and their understanding,

not just their bodies. And one more thing.

Philip and I have been married for 12 years,

and yet we preach the Harrad philosophy.

So why do I go to bed with him and not with you? Because I like him.

What do you think he'll do?

I don't know.

You were pretty rough on him, weren't you?

Maybe. Why did he do it?

Oh,

I think he was testing us both the validity of the entire project.

We knew it might happen.

Are you going to dismiss him?

I want to help him. If he stays, he can infect the entire group.

If I dismiss him, the board of directors will be down on it.

God dammit. What do you think I should do?

I think that's why he did it.

Make trouble for it.

No, I think he's afraid of obligation. Harrad was the perfect solution for him.

The owner says to leave then it isn't his fault. Right?

I don't know. I can't prove anything.

I.

I think I'll talk to him.

You are running, huh? Well, you do. You'll do it on your own.

I'm not gonna be your alibi Stanley. I'm not gonna expel you.

Into the night into tomorrow.

Go gently. Sweet.

Go gently.

Go gently. Sweet. Stranger.

Gently.

You.

Jack. Jack. What time is it now?

25.

You think she'll come? She'll be here.

Go gently. Sweet stranger. Go gently.

You want some more?

I wake up in the morning just to face another.

Empty day before me.

The same old story.

You know, you've got it whipped. No ties,

no promises. You don't belong to nothing.

It's really terrific.

Yeah.

Terrific.

Look,

the mirror at the eyes of someone looking back at

me, A lonely man.

It's over the time we talk and laugh.

Now a drink my coffee alone

that's living in the past.

Close my door and turn the key and.

Leave.

My empty home.

People ask me how I feel. I say, okay.

I must be lying the inside. I'm dying.

The weather on radio

says that today the sun will shine,

but it feels like rain. It's all,

it's all been said and done.

Not so easy. Hello?

Hi.

Ya.

Hi Stanley.

Hi.

Hi Stanley. I thought I had someplace to go.

Found out I didn't.

I'm staying. It's over

and nothing stops the pain.

Close the door and turn the key.

And leave.

My empty hole.

Now I wake up in the morning. No more empty,

useless days at day.

No saying on story zoom.

Look into the mirror at the eyes of someone

smiling at

zoom. It's zoom

so hard, not alone. It's

what we've got. Will close the door and turn the.

It is not over.

And what we've got will last close the door and turn

the key in. My happy home.

It's not over.
