and now I'm a high-school English teacher.
That's it?
I don't mean "that's it"
like that's all you got going on,
but what else about you?
Let's see.
I met my ex-husband at university.
I moved here when he got a job.
I quit mine when I had Morgan.
I just went back a few years ago,
so basically, you could say I took a long hiatus,
I lost myself in the process,
and now I feel like I have no idea what I'm doing.
[deep breath]
I bet you're glad you asked that question.
I am.
Your turn.
I grew up
in a small, ridiculously quiet town--
Mendocino,
about two hours north of here.
There wasn't really much to do, or going on, so...
...I started birding.
And then I fell in love with it.
[chuckles]
I'm glad you have time for a new hobby.
It's kind of exciting.
Yes, it is.
Now don't talk to me.
[whispers] Oh, that's right-- you're birding.
[gasps] Look yonder.
A scrub jay is in sight.
Oh, yeah, look at that.
[birds singing]
[Celeste] Toldja I saw one.
Indeed, a scrub jay.
Ha.
Good spotting.
Thank you.
[Celeste] Seven? In two hours?
[John] Hence the title "Patient Listening".
We got time.
Okay, speaking of time,
do you happen to have any to spare
on Friday night?
We have this school event.
It's a fundraiser.
Parents against teachers.
-What's the "against" part? -Bowling.
Oh, no, I'm out.
Really?
Only because I'm a terrible bowler.
Oh, no, no, no. You do not have to be good.
You just have to show up.
That is 97% of it-- I promise.
But, full disclosure,
I may have insinuated something
that makes this all a bit more complicated.
Okay.
You know how I teach high school?
Well, sometimes, I feel like
I'm still in high school with all the gossip,
and the drama and the people in your business,
trying to set you up because they feel sorry for you.
And then there were your flowers--
thank you, by the way. I hope you got my text.
It was just a little something.
And my co-workers saw 'em
and they thought I had a new boyfriend.
Okay. And, uh, to which you said?
Not a lot! They're a bit much.
And then, of course, they wanted to meet you.
-Your "new boyfriend"? -Yes.
I know, it's a lot to ask.
I just-- I don't wanna be that person anymore.
What-- What person?
The one people pity.
I just wanna go and I wanna bowl
and raise some money for the kids.
I'm in.
Really?
Yeah. I owe you.
[♪♪♪]
[Eva] Girl, you look great in everything.
What's the big deal?
Well, it's not every day
you have to get dressed for a fake date.
It's harder than you think!
Mm. No, not that one.
What? No?
You know, it's casual.
It's bowling,
so it's gotta be casual,
but cute enough for early dating.
Whatever that means!
[Eva] That's tragic.
Oh, please-- don't hold back.
[laughs] Hey, you called me.
[gasping] What about this?
[Eva] Oh! Better.
-But? -[door shuts]
Oh, it's Morgan! I gotta go!
"Better" wasn't a "yes"!
[termination beeping]
I can't do the same concept as every other artist.
It's the Junior Art Collective!
My... [sighs] My last one.
[Celeste] Hi, honey!
You're home.
I gotta go.
How was your day?
[sighing] Okay.
Except my art project is a disaster.
You get nervous every year,
and I know it's gonna be beautiful.
It's fine.
I just need to revise it...
in a vacuum.
Well, if you need my help--
That's not a vacuum.
I wanted to give you this.
Go on.
Open it.
You didn't need to get me anything.
I know.
I'm just excited for you.
Thanks... Mom.
But...
what if I made a mistake?
In choosing V.A.U.?
This has been the goal, the path,
for as long as I can remember.
I know.
You're so close. Don't second-guess yourself.
If it's too big, we can always get you a different size.

-Yes! How did you meet? -You know what, ladies?
Why don't we do this after we bowl,
