[low indistinct chatter]
I know it's difficult, guys.
I know, because you want to win.
I know that, guys.
I know you want to win.
But you have to learn to play football with courage.
Our best thing in our season is because it doesn't matter where we were,
we played with fucking character, with courage to play.
For what? For after the final.
What good is it if we arrive to the final
and don't do what we have done all season?
Because at the end, we'll have to go with that in finals
if you want a place in Champions League, guys.
And we have to show who we are. And that is the test you have to do.
If we play short here, always find Nico, Vinnie.
Nico, Vinnie, Dinho, Gรผndo.
You pass the ball to find them.
You pass the ball, because they run.
Then when they jump, the space is there. They don't jump, you're alone.
Turn, go, commit.
They don't commit. Why do you have to commit?
Because they jump.
If the ball is there--
When the ball is here, guys,
when we are in that position, we fast-pass.
Who is in this space? It's Kevin.
When the play is here, it's David. Okay, let's go!
[all] Come on, let's go!
Let's go!
[narrator] Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, knows how to win.
As a player and manager
Guardiola has been to the summit of the football world many times before.
Employing an attacking style dependent on speed and precision.
But this is the English Premier League.
The most competitive football league in the world.
And possibly the most physical.
Top class but brutal.
The question was, could Guardiola's beautiful game succeed here?
[Guardiola] To become the top, top, top team, you have to score the fucking goals, guys.
[narrator] This is the beginning of a nine-month journey.
In which Manchester City football club will compete in the Premier League.
[crowd cheer]
The Champions League.
Yeah.
And vie for two domestic cups.
All the time "the referee", Arsene! You shut up!
[narrator] Playing a total of 57 games.
That is the moment the real men, the real football players...
[Vincent] Here you go, have the ball. Come back and trail back.
-Feel like you can have a chance. -Think of the basics of football.
Just the basics.
[Guardiola angrily] Sit down! Nobody talk!
Sit down!
"We are tired!" Fuck you.
[commentator] The goals have been raining in.
We should exchange the signed copies with the players lawyer as soon as possible.
[Guardiola] I want to see my team. I'm not talking about win or lose.
I want the fucking records.
You are the best team in the world.
[commentator] It's a curling effort. And it's in!
Raheem Sterling!
[narrator] An embedded film crew captured every moment.
Offering a never-before-seen look inside the world of professional football.
Forty five minutes to be champion, guys.
Here we are.
[commentator] Gabriel Jesus for a record breaking goal.
[cheering]
[laughing]
Man City!
[team chanting indistinct]
[radio] Top of the league.
Top of the league.
[commentator] A brilliant full-back header!
Yes!
[commentator] The Manchester City captain.
[crowd cheering]
Come on, City!
[Guardiola] Making history is in front of our faces.
What we are living, we are not living anymore in our lives.
It's impossible.
[chanting] Hey!
[Guardiola] My advice: don't drop it, keep it.
Let's go, guys!
[theme music playing]
[narrator] England, the home of football for more than a century and a half.
Here, football is part of daily life.
Especially, in a city like Manchester.
For Mancunians, it's a religion.
[crowd cheering]
[Noel] I was in love with City before I was in love with music.
I was in love with City before I was in love my wife.
I was in love with City before I was in love with my kids.
It was the first thing that I loved.
[narrator] Manchester City was founded as a community club in 1894.
For the majority of their existence
they've competed in England's top division.
Which became the Premier League in 1992.
[commentator] Now... what can he do-- Leslie!
Leslie, he's not offside.
Manchester City are the champions of the first...
[narrator] In their first hundred years, City won only two league titles.
A team that often played in the shadow of local rivals.
Manchester United.
[narrator] But their fortune started to change
with the take-over of the Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008.
When Sheikh Mansour began to invest heavily in the team
and the community.
Mansour built one of the finest football facilities in the world
to house the first team...
the women's team...
and the youth academy.
In the decades since, City have captured two League titles
and three domestic cups.
[Noel] We kept this club going. There wouldn't be a club
if people hadn't supported them in the third division, for a start.
So we deserve it, fans of a certain age.
We deserve all that's going on now.
[narrator] Now they hope to become
the best team in the world.
Our ambition every year, coming in to every season
is to win the league.
And go and try to give it a shot
to go as far as possible in the Champions League.
So that's our mission this year.
[Vincent] Win the League, Champions League,
FA Cup, League Cup, World Cup.
It's the best year to look forward to.
[narrator] It's a daunting schedule.
But necessary when in pursuit of four trophies.
And expectations have never been higher.
[cheering]
[Sally] Ladies and gentleman, your manager...
Pep Guardiola!
[narrator] In the hopes of taking the ultimate next step,
Man City appointed world-renowned manager Pep Guardiola in 2016.
[Sally] Thank you for joining us. Just a small group of friends
to talk to you about your new job.
What do you think of the reception so far?
Not bad.
[crowd laugh]
All the time, the guys receiving need to set the ball.
When you receive, see how you can go!
It's two seconds, guys.
You are acting immediately. You are involved in the game.
If you have the opportunity to come in this country
to play the Premier League, you have to do that.
In terms of the show, in terms of the image,
in terms of many things.
That reason is the most followed
in Asia and all around the world.
[narrator] In his playing days Guardiola anchored the Barcelona team
that captured four straight La Liga titles and the European Cup in the early '90s.
As a manager with Barcelona, and later Bayern Munich,
Guardiola won 21 trophies in seven years.
[commentator] ...into Barca star man, Leo Messi.
Iniesta with a bit of space ahead of him.
Iniesta inside on his right.
Looking for Xavi. Still with Xavi!
It's in!
Barcelona have taken the lead.
We still lose. Simple pass, guys.
Passing the rounds gives us the confidence.
It gives us absolutely everything.
Focus on that. Short spaces. Focus on that. Okay.
[narrator] There were doubts that the ground-based
beautiful style of football that Pep perfected in Spain
would work in the physical English Premier League.
[Guardiola] Now control it, David. Now, come on, David.
Mendy, and cross, guys.
Guys, we make that the same.
The only pleasure I think, the only power that the manager has
every single day is to dream that his team is going to play the way he wants.
When the ball is going up and down, we put the ball there.
Not there, on the foot!
Now that player who sees all that, goes and runs in behind.
[Khaldoon] He represents everything we strive for.
He is a genius.
If I have to use one word, it is "detailed".
[narrator] It was an inauspicious start.
Despite multiple signings and a huge expense,
City failed to meet expectations in 2017.
It was Guardiola's first trophyless season as a manager.
[Omar] We thought that the team was automatically gonna start
winning and playing the beautiful style of football
that he developed at Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
Actually, the team started really well last season.
But it didn't have that continuity.
You know, to not get anything out of it with what quality we had
and what team we had was disappointing.
[Kevin] In football, if you don't win anything, it's always a failure.
It's not that we had the worst season, but obviously we didn't win anything.
So, in the end, people just care about winning.
[Khaldoon] It was very hard, I think, for Pep.
Last season was not easy for him mentally, psychologically.
[interviewer] You don't seem that happy that you've won?
More than you believe, I'm happy.
[Khaldoon] Pressure. I think the reality that he dealt with...
challenges that he's never dealt with professionally as a manager.
[narrator] Guardiola's only achievement, albeit an important one,
was qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
Which City secured in the last game of the season.
I remember people saying last season
this tippy-toppy football's getting on my nerves.
Pep knows what he's doing.
When he gets the players he wants, we will run away with it.
[Ferran] So what we have in this space seems reasonable.
But it actually means that we do a significant investment in three players.
I think, Txiki, there might be a type of player
that works for the Spanish League and doesn't work for the Premier League.
Because of the physicality.
[Txiki] We are also looking at the size of the full-backs as well.
And if you are small, you have to be very good.
We have to make some decisions today?
[narrator] This season, City have opened the check book.
Spending a reported 128 million pounds on three full-backs
capable of executing Pep's attacking style.
Danilo.
Kyle Walker.
And left-back Benjamin Mendy from AS Monaco.
[Benjamin] I like everything about this club.
And with the manager Pep Guardiola,
my trust is in City.
[Omar] In that position specifically, he was the number one target.
And I would say number one, far ahead of number two.
[narrator] Pep demands that his defenders
are as skilled with the ball as any other player on the team.
That includes new goal keeper, Ederson.
A Brazilian whom City signed for a reported 35 million pounds.
A record-breaking fee for a keeper.
[narrator] Along with new transfer Bernardo Silva,
they join a team of 25 superstars from 11 different countries.
A blend of different personalities, backgrounds and egos
must all come together under Guardiola for City to be successful.
This is their new home, Manchester.
And this is their new family.
[indistinct chatter]
Well, that's why you get paid 200,000 a week
to do this extra job, Kyle Walker.
-[Kyle] What is your job at this club? -Mainly looking after Delphy
who's got very big time in the last few years.
[all laugh]
What a bell!
I'm looking at your team next, mate.
What's happening, babes? You all right, yeah?
Call me, babes.
[Brian] This season there seems to be a really good spirit
both on and off the pitch.
There's a lot of young players that are growing. It's very vibrant.
There's a good togetherness.
It's a family. In the end, you spend
maybe more time here than you spend at home.
It's difficult to explain. It's how it flows in this team.
So I think it's very important.
[laughing]
Playing together as a team there's no selfish players
and I think that's...
a big part of it.
It's kind of like healthy competition in training.
That always keeps you motivated
to keep getting better and keep fighting for your spot.
And wanting to do better. I think everyone's got that hunger inside them.
[Yaya] We have to be together and close in order to make things happen.
I think everybody is expecting City to do well.
With the manager we have and players we have been signing this year.
We believe this year we'll win something.
[narrator] City captures seven points in their first three games.
Two wins and a draw.
But they're far from perfect.
Up next, a huge test against Liverpool.
A team City took only a point from last season.
They favour an attacking style like City
with three potent goal scorers in Roberto Firmino,
Sadio Mane, and Mohamed Salah.
[Guardiola] Good afternoon, guys, to everybody.
Today I'll explain to you what Liverpool do with the ball in attack.
This is a team that is so good running. They run in behind.
Okay. The concentration on the pitch is so important.
But just focus, today, on when the ball is outside closing the channel.
Those guys, Mane and Salah, playing in those positions.
When the ball is here, they make the move and put the ball here.
They are so fast.
Even when the full-back has to go, try to make that movement.
To close here, to play here. Okay?
[ambient music]
[security guard] Papa T to 24.
Can I get the electric bollards at gate 7, please? Thank you.
[music continues]
What I miss the most is being in the locker room before the game.
The locker room is the nicest place to be.
The second one is on the pitch.
When they are joking. When they are all together.
When they criticise the manager.
When they share the good and bad moments.
[indistinguishable dialogue]
[players indistinct shouting]
[commentator] Good afternoon and welcome to the Etihad.
The return of the Premier League.
Manchester City at home against Liverpool.
And what a game we have in prospects.
[heavy drum beats]
Looking to build. City need to contain them.
Of course, Guardiola's blueprint becoming more and more evident with each game.
City do indeed play possession-based football.
Highly attractive to watch... every game they've played this season.
Here's Agรผero.
Around the goalkeeper. Agรผero scores!
As he always does when Liverpool visit.
He has found the net all six times when he's played Liverpool at the Etihad.
[commentator 1] Clinically finished. Liverpool not looking too clever.
[narrator] City grab the lead.
Then Liverpool's attack, lead by Salah and Mane
threaten City's new defence, as well as new goal keeper Ederson.
[commentator] Salah into the area. Another great save from Ederson.
That was Matip. And here goes Mane!
And Ederson.
[suspenseful beat]
[whistle blows]
When you see it again from that angle. Catches him.
[beat continues]
[crowd clapping]
City fans rise to applaud off the number 23 goal keeper.
[commentator 1] Sadio Mane has been sent off.
[narrator] The sending off of Mane proves to be a turning point.
Against ten men, City quickly take advantage.
[commentator] Another free header, this time no flag.
Jesus has scored!
Manchester City lead by two.
[motivational music]
Fernandinho. He's in again! Sergio Agรผero. Unselfish!
Jesus is there to profit.
De Bruyne. Sanรฉ.
Here comes Mendy.
Sanรฉ! Lovely goal.
Glittering piece of team play! And a consummate finish to cap it off.
[music builds]
Walker.
Sanรฉ with no pressure on him at all.
And that's what he can do!
It was almost an invitation to shoot.
[commentator 1] That is an absolute peach from Sanรฉ.
[commentator] Five-nil in the end.
Manchester City heading to the top of the table for now.
[indistinct chatter]
[players cheering]
[all shouting]
["Bailando" by Enrique Iglesias]
[Pep] The lockroom is the nicest place. The nicest.
It's the only moment when I feel we are a real team.
I feel I am still a football player.
[narrator] It's an emphatic 5-0 win.
And fortunately for City, Ederson's injury is far less serious than it appears.
[narrator] Ederson has been an impactful signing.
But he's not the only one.
The new back line, starring Benjamin Mendy, is thriving.
[Guardiola] Yes, well done. Go, Mendy, go!
We scored a lot of goals in that period, because we had Mendy
help us to attack wide enough to have a lot of people inside.
[narrator] Mendy epitomizes Pep's style of play.
A left-back as comfortable in defence as he is in attack.
[intense classical music]
[Yaya] Mendy I think is special in this position.
Only he can provide the, you know, physicality,
speed and precision, you know.
[music continues]
[Guardiola] There are guys who take maybe a month, half a year...
Maybe one season to settle in the new city,
the new club, the new team.
And there are guys that do it immediately because of how they are.
[laughing]
[speaks French]
[Guardiola] Of course, I remember in the beginning
I was a little bit upset one day with the team
because they didn't enjoy, they didn't celebrate something,
and he sent me a message and said,
"Don't worry, coach, I will take care of my team."
[no audible dialogue]
[Guardiola] Sometimes, guys, when you play full-backs...
All the team but especially full-backs. If you go, and they follow you,
you can attack more.
Because, at the end, when we attack, and they defend here,
when you lose the ball, making the counter here is impossible.
From here, it's possible.
From here, it's so difficult.
Okay, guys, prepare well.
[narrator] Pep's new full-backs, Mendy and Walker
have had great success getting forward to create scoring chances.
[crowd cheering]
City's next opponents, Crystal Palace, have had trouble scoring at all.
On paper, this should be an easy game.
[commentator] Towards Silva.
Mendy well forward.
That could have gone anywhere.
[commentator 1] Man City are pressing. That's a vital block from Fosu-Mensah.
[commentator 2] Here's Townsend.
Mendy just lunged in.
[whistle blow]
It's nothing too serious, but he looks in a lot of discomfort.
[commentator 3] We've just seen Mendy straight away...
puts his hands on his knee as he punches. He'll be hoping...
I wonder as he went down there
whether there was a bit of hyper-extension there.
Whether the leg... Mendy sees insult added to injury.
Although it looks like he might be giving it a go, in terms of carrying on.
[ominous tone]
[commentator 2] That injury is really affecting him.
It looks like Mendy isn't going to able to carry on.
It's the end of the game for the 49 million pound man.
[narrator] It's a tough break for Mendy.
But it doesn't slow City down.
The Blues come away with another decisive victory.
Thanks, in part, to Mendy's cover at left-back.
Fabian Delph.
Who normally plays in mid-field.
[commentator] Delph. Oh!
Fabian Delph to round it off in style.
Manchester City, five, Crystal Palace, nil.
[Ferran] By today we will know the extent of the injury.
Mendy's injury.
And there is a risk that it's a long-term injury.
We don't know yet, but it's probable, right.
This might put us under pressure in the winter market.
So at the moment we're finding solutions
but worse case, Mendy is out for the season.
And worst case, we have to go to the market in January.
[narrator] Mendy is sent for further tests to a specialist in Barcelona.
Dr. Cugat.
He's my bro.
Jesรฉ. [laughs]
[narrator] It'll be months of rehab and recovery for Mendy.
[narrator] City have already been dealing
with the absence of club captain Vincent Kompany.
Who's been side-lined with his own injuries since the third game.
[Vincent] It's an injury, it's not a bad injury or the worse injury.
It's annoying, because it stops you in your tracks but, um...
You know, other than that it's cool if you know how to deal with it.
If you follow the process, if you, kind of, follow the path
to get back to full fitness. And then...
once I've done that I'll be back playing well again and helping the team.
[narrator] The six-foot-four Belgian international
signed with the club a decade ago.
He's been a fixture in central defence ever since.
A City captain since 2011.
[commentator] They've done it.
Manchester City!
[narrator] For all his exploits,
Kompany could still use a little assistance
with the more gruelling aspects of rehab.
[Vincent] Brandon?
-[Brandon] Yes? -[Vincent] Go on, get in.
-[Brandon] Fuck that. -[Vincent] Go on!
-Brandon. -[Brandon] What?
[Vincent] You've got no choice, you're going in with me.
Imagine that on camera, me and his body together.
-[Vincent] Come on. -Make me look even worse.
[Vincent] I need a partner in there.
[Brandon] Look at that difference in body shape.
-[Vincent laughs] -Look at that! [growls]
There you go.
In you go.
[Brandon muffled speech]
-You okay? -[Brandon muffled speech]
It's minus 130 degrees at the moment.
[cameraman] What's happening in there now?
So, basically, it's cold therapy. So they start off in the first room--
-[Brandon] How long? -You've got over a minute left, Brandon.
-Hang in there. -[Brandon screams]
The room they're in now is minus 130 degrees.
It's exceptionally cold.
It just helps with the inflammation, reducing sensations of fatigue
and just helps the whole recovery process.
So we use it match day plus one.
It is safe, yeah.
It is entertaining as well.
Yes, you've got 20 seconds.
-[Brandon yelling] -Make sure you go out the middle door.
[Donough] Okay, just watch the step coming out.
-[Vincent] Lovely. -[Donough] Good job, Brando.
That life is like a near-death experience in there.
It's what, 140 minus in there?
So... you just hope that the door opens when you want to get out.
[both laugh]
That's how we prepare for games in England.
Partner, thank you very much.
The result is afterwards you feel better.
[Brandon] Come on, come to the boot room.
Let's go.
[narrator] No team succeeds without a proper engine room.
Managers and players come and go
but the backroom staff can be around for years.
Yeah, I started when I was 16.
I finished high school and got straight into this.
I knew someone here, the kit man at the time.
Chappy. And he needed some help. So I just helped out.
And I went to Germany on pre-season in 2009.
But I ended up staying.
And I'm still here. [laughs]
[bucket scrapes]
So this is the boot room.
These are all the boots that they train in. Some may be matched.
This is where we hang them so they're together.
And then there's a boot steamer here.
So sometimes boots are a bit hard.
So sometimes when players get new boots, again...
they're really tight.
So we put them on here.
Sometimes overnight or sometimes for a couple of hours.
It stretches the boot.
So, see, this is Otamendi's boot that's been worn.
Worn down. He's worn them for quite a bit, so you can see.
As opposed to that. That's a brand new stud.
And that's a worn-down one.
So seeing as he's worn it a couple of times, and he's not--
And it's been scratched a little bit.
[Vincent] Brandon is kind of the heart and soul of the dressing room.
He has this ability to... take pressure off.
I would say the players are closer to the kit man, to the physios.
I'm very good with them.
Since day one, it's like...
sometimes for me it's nice to be away from football people for a moment.
It's different, you know?
For me, these are the normal people.
Ah, my leg. Look at that!
-That's not me. -I'm going to sue you!
-We got it on camera. -[Kevin] You got me.
-[laughs] -[Kevin] Ah!
Ah! I cannot do commercials today.
[Brandon laughs]
[soft guitar]
[narrator] With Kompany out,
one of the players stepping into a leadership role
is City's other Belgian international, Kevin De Bruyne.
A creative mid-fielder who has flourished under Guardiola.
[Guardiola] Kevin is a top player.
He's shy, he doesn't talk too much.
But on the pitch, he's completely different.
Kevin is a competitor.
Physically strong. He can do everything.
He doesn't feel the pressure.
Now he is one of our captains.
And he deserves it.
Because he takes a lot of responsibility on the pitch.
[Vincent] He's a quarterback, really. He knows the players and sees the game
before everybody else.
If he has a map of the game in his head,
he can just close his eyes and he'll find people.
[commentator] Intercepted by Kevin De Bruyne. This is David Silva.
He's got Sanรฉ to his left. He's got Agรผero in the middle.
[narrator] Earlier in his career, De Bruyne was a player
considered to have huge potential.
But at Chelsea his former manager, Josรฉ Mourinho,
didn't seem willing to wait.
I was only 20 years old when I decided to sign for Chelsea.
And I got my chances in the first few games.
I thought, okay, everything's going well. I played okay.
We won the games.
But then one day it just stopped.
And now you are speaking about Kevin De Bruyne.
You are not interested in the players that are playing.
You're interested in the players that aren't.
He was not selected. It was my decision.
Only 11 can play, and 18 to be on...
To be selected.
He wasn't selected, because I didn't like
the match he played...
against Swindon,
and I didn't like the way he was training.
But you have this tendency. You only ask about the guys that are not selected.
See you tomorrow. Thank you.
Yeah, knowing me, I didn't have much patience at the time.
I decided to go in January.
[narrator] De Bruyne played two seasons in Germany.
Where he became Bundesliga player of the year.
[crowd cheer]
Before returning to the Premier League with City in 2015.
Up next, City face Chelsea.
De Bruyne's old club, and the current Premier League champions.
They'll do so without left-back Benjamin Mendy.
[Mendy] Good afternoon, guys.
How are you? I send this video for you, my team.
All the best for today and win this game.
Because it is very important for the league.
And to stay in the first place.
So come on, City.
And good luck, everybody.
When the game starts...
give everything in your heart to win this game.
I believe in you guys. Ciao.
Any question? [laughs]
Good game.
[commentator] Welcome to the bridge for what is, in prospect at least,
the game of the season, so far.
[commentator 1] I'm hoping this has the flow that we've seen
from both clubs this season.
Because the goals have been on tap.
Woo! [gasps]
[commentator] Rudiger's header away, it came down for Fabian Delph!
[indistinct shouting]
[crowd booing and heckling]
[commentator 1] Fร bregas and Hazard.
Out by Ederson, firmly.
-And further out by Delph. -E-der-son!
[commentator 2] He hit it with good force, and Ederson was sharp enough.
Puts in a kick by De Bruyne!
[shouts] Go--!
[commentator] Courtois had to react.
[chanting indistinct]
[narrator] City dominate possession.
And it's De Bruyne who's at the centre of it.
[commentator] De Bruyne... Oh belter!
[cheering loudly]
De Bruyne!
[commentator] Absolute belter from Kevin De Bruyne.
[commentator 1] Sensational stuff from De Bruyne.
Once a Chelsea blue...
now giving Chelsea the blues.
City have scored at the home of the champions.
[crowd singing] Oh, Kevin De Bruyne!
[whistle blows]
[shouts] Yes!
Fucking brilliant, man!
[indistinct chatter]
[team cheering and clapping]
[team cheer louder]
[chanting] Hey!
[team singing] Oh, Kevin De Bruyne!
[team singing] Oh, Kevin De Bruyne!
[team singing] Oh, Kevin De Bruyne!
[Guardiola] They believe now they are good.
And I think that is not going to change this season.
So that doesn't mean winning the title or not.
But even if we are not able to win the titles...
They will know and we will know we are good.
That we are better than the other ones.
[unidentified player shouts] Mendy!
[team cheering]
Come on, City!
Come on, City!
[narrator] To be the best, you have to beat the best.
City have done that.
And after seven games, they sit at the top of the table.
[triumphant music]
But they'll soon face a stern test from a familiar foe
right on their heels...
and right across town.
[narrator] Next time, on All Or Nothing: Manchester City.
The stadium has history.
It's an old stadium. It looks like it's going to fall down.
[TV reporter] Bad news for Manchester City.
This does not look good.
[doctor] It's an injury, grade two of the biceps femoral.
And the proximal myotendinous union.
...and Raj, you go here.
[commentator] Raheem Sterling!
[crowd cheer]
Oh, my goodness!
[team singing indistinct]
[woman] Guard day means everything.
[man] I'm peeping we should beat them comfortably.
But it's United, anything can happen.
[shouts] Come on, City!
[crowd chanting] City!
[whistle blows]
