What happened?

I didn't lock the gate panel.

So she got out [sobs] and I guess she ran into the fence

because I just found her lying there all bloody.

So I just left her.

Usually, when things like that happen,

people look for someone to blame,

but you can't blame yourself.

I'll never forgive myself.

It's not your fault. Accidents happen.

By now, she's already crossed over the Rainbow Bridge

and is in paradise.

It's a lot prettier there than here.

Why'd this have to happen to me?

Why my animal?

I don't think anybody in the world will ever be able

to understand why we lose the ones we love,

but we just have to trust God even when it hurts

and know he has a reason for why these things happen.

We're just teenagers, but even Mom and Dad

and all the grownups in the world

ask themselves the same question.

I'm just giving her some space right now.

I'm gonna give her a few days out of school.

Maybe that'll help her feel better.

and feel like you're replacing it.

I just finished telling Cream Puff about his mother.

You know what's funny?

I woke up early this morning to go and feed Princess.

For just a second, I thought she was still here.

Yeah, I went out to feed Cream Puff, but he wouldn't eat.

I even tried grain, but he still wouldn't.

Let's go spend some time down at the beach.

I'll be in the truck.

My mother always taught me that if your neighbor

ever comes to you in need

and it's in your power to give them what they need,

you be there to help 'em.

When I was 12 years old, my neighbor came to me.

He was a 14-year-old boy.

He wanted to borrow my ax, so I gave it to him.

And I figured he wanted to chop some wood

for his family like I did.

But that's not why he wanted it.

He wanted to see how strong a turtle shell was.

Unfortunately, the shell wasn't strong enough

to withstand the ax.

I thought it was my fault for the longest time

'cause I'm the one that gave him the ax.

There I was, I was just trying to do a good deed

and something bad happened.

You know, in my heart, I was just doing

something good for my neighbor.

It took a long time for me

to realize that it wasn't my fault.

How'd you get over it?

Well, I felt so bad inside for such a long time,

I finally told my mother about it.

And you know what she said?

What?

She said, I was no more responsible for the actions

of others than I was for causing the rain to fall.

And I got over it real fast because, number one,

she believed it wasn't my fault.

And number two, she was right.

And so I'm gonna tell you the same thing

today that my mother told me.

"It's not your fault."

You couldn't control Princess running through the fence.

I know it hurts inside of your heart,

but we have to move forward.

Not only do we have to forgive others when it's tough,

we have to forgive ourselves.

And that's one of the hardest lessons to learn in life

and one of the hardest things to do.

And sometimes it just takes time.

But we're gonna start today.

Right?

I'm feeling okay.

Daddy took me to the beach today,

and we had a long talk about how it wasn't my fault,

and he made me feel a little bit better, I guess.

I still kind of feel like it is my fault

because I'm the reason she got out.

But he says not to worry about it.

And that I'll feel better eventually.

I don't know about getting another animal.

I'll probably get them hurt too.

I can't just forget about Princess.

I mean, every day she's there in my mind.

I can't stop thinking about her.

Sometimes I still see pictures of her running

through the fields playing.

I think it's just too early for anyone else right now.

Maybe with more time.

So I was really mad when he took me to the auction.

But then I saw her, and everything changed.

It was the most incredible moment.

Our eyes locked together,

and it's like she was asking me for help.

Suddenly I just forgot about everything.

All of my anger, all of my grief, and all of my sadness.

Because I knew in that moment

she needed me just as badly as I needed her.

So what kind of horse is she?

A baby Percheron.

When I look at her, she reminds me of Black Beauty.

The Amish started training her,

and she did great when Dad and I took her for a walk.

She seemed so sad at the auction.

And when she came here, it was like a weight

was taking off of her back.

Well, she looks happy and she let us groom her,

but I did notice how she jumped when my hand

got too close to her face.

She must have been hit before.

That's why she's scared when we raise our hands,

she probably thinks it's gonna happen again.

Either that or she's worried that we're gonna take her away

to another horrible place.

I think she's still kind of getting adjusted.

I mean, she's happy,

but she still doesn't quite know what's going on, I think.

Everything's still kind of uncertain.

So you do have a lot in common then.

What do you mean?

Well, you haven't brought it up,

but we all know you still feel bad about Princess

and that you're scared of being hurt again.

I'm getting better, but of course I'm still upset,

and I admit, I'm scared of hurting her like I did Princess.

If you hadn't lost Princess,

who knows what would've happened to Raven?

Another life wouldn't have been saved.

So in the end, Princess did save her life.

And that's a very special thing.

That is a nice way to think about it.

I just wish Princess was here with Raven.

She is here.

So, how did it go?

I do have some concerns with her eyes.

She's got some inflammation.

So I'm thinking it's uveitis.

What's uveitis?

Uveitis is the middle layer of the eye, the uvea.

And when that becomes inflamed, it damages the eye,

and eventually the horse goes blind.

Is it curable?

Unfortunately there is no cure.

But I did bring in some supplement for her

that could help prevent the inflammation.

Omega-3s are great for fighting the inflammation

and boosting the immune system.

And if this is an autoimmune condition

that her body was born with, it's gonna help.

Okay, girl.

Fall came quicker than we all expected,

and it's only gonna get colder.

I wanna teach you how to put a blanket on

because even though you might not like it,

you're really gonna need it.

My dad put up a new camera so I could watch her at night,

but it was too dark to really see anything.

So I thought Christmas lights would be the prettiest option.

Yeah, we were having trouble getting our two donkeys

to go inside the barn,

and I thought it was because it was too dark.

So I put some Christmas lights up, and they went right in.

Then you're up.

It's incredible to see

how fast a horse can come from being abused

and abandoned to loving again and finding happiness.

It wasn't that easy though, and it was a slow process.

But I'm so happy she walked into my life.

It's so great that you're happy again.

I didn't think we were ever gonna get Amber back.

It was like we healed each other.

Horses are healers.

That's what they do.

That's definitely true.

She was just worried I was hurt, but I was mad at myself.

She loved that vase,

and she knew grandma wouldn't be able

to buy her another one.

You had a hard time forgiving yourself?

I still feel horrible about it to this day,

but I did forgive myself

because Mom said nothing meant more

to her in the world than my feelings.

Mom said she'd feel sad if I kept feeling bad.

Of course I didn't want her to feel sad,

so I forgave myself.

how grateful I am to have you here

and that Amber would've never healed without you.

I don't think people realize that not just humans,

but animals are God's creation

and that the animals are just as special as the humans.

Horse healing is a powerful force of nature,

taking two damaged souls and connecting them by love,

though it is rarely easy.

Often, the ones involved have been broken past

all thought of repair.

And afterwards, learning to live again

is harder than whatever they had already gone through.

Finding the desire to live is even harder.

So the process of bonding with someone

as shattered as I was, as messy, complicated,

and sometimes presents more tragedy than before,

but it is beautiful.

After letting Raven into my life,

I found myself on this unstoppable whirling path of sadness,

regret, fear, friendship, and finally love.

Day by day, I found my broken heart wanting more

and more to be near this horse,

to share in her pain and find comfort

in the way she understood me.

How we, as two shattered souls, became one in love

and strengthened a bond meekly formed

amongst tragedy into something unbreakable and everlasting.

Something that will exist far beyond all reach

of disaster and be there for us to cling to if we find

ourselves at the bottom again.

And that is the beauty of healing with the horse.

Perhaps the most unexpected way to find love again,

but, in my opinion, the most wonderful,

because Raven is more than just a horse.

She is my most cherished friend.

We were there for each other as a beacon

of comfort in the darkness of which we were lost.

And after all that we have been through together,

nothing can take that away from us.
