I'm Alex Taylor, and this is
Lucky Costa.

Hello.

-Where are we?
-We're in the cut.

Actually, we're cut adjacent.

OK, so there's one thing that
least money, our '72 Nova,

and the Typhoon have in common.

I'm gonna go with
the amazing appearance.

It's the fact that they both
need paint.

They both do need paint.

In the pursuit of doing stuff
right on this, we're actually

sending this one off to get
paint work done professionally.

It's gonna be nice.
It's gonna be pretty.

Sending it out to get
it painted.

Nice.

But you remember professional
race car driver?

I am.

We're gonna be
professional painters.

Ooh, I checked my resume.
I did not see that on there.

Ah, funny, because I wrote it
on there this morning.

-Really?
-Yeah.

-Pencil or pen?
-Sharpie, actually.

-I guess it's permanent.
-[Alex] Permanent marker.

So we're gonna try our hand
at paint and body

on the Typhoon.

The whole idea here is to find
out how much money we can save

by doing it ourselves and see
if the effort that's involved

is worth the savings.

Maybe you have a car at home,
you and your buddies wanna

get together one weekend
and paint your car over

a long weekend.

We're gonna do that same
thing and do the best paint job

that we can with the little bit
of time that we have.

What she said, for sure.

No, I have such high hopes
for this.

We're gonna actually do it
proper with jambing the car,

meaning that we're gonna
paint all the door jambs so

you don't open whatever color
we go with and see black door

jambs and all that.
-So it's a color change.

-We're doing a full
color change.
-OK.

[Alex] So in an attempt
to do that correctly,

we've taken the car
pretty much

all the way apart,
minus a few pieces,

and then we're gonna
sand it all,

then seal it with
a sealing primer

for a nice base
to work from.

Then we're gonna
spread filler,

sand filler,
and then once

it's all flat
and smooth
to our liking,

we're gonna
spray it with
a sanding primer,

and then sand
some more

for an even
smoother finish.

Once that's all done,

we're gonna
seal it again,

then we're finally

going to get
to lay the color down.

Even though we have a brand
new shop, they were frowning on

the whole idea of us blowing it
up with Bondo,

dirt and overspray.
-By they, I meant us.

Yeah, us.
We'd have to clean it.

-Yeah.
-We're gonna be doing a lot

of it out here in
the vacant parking lot.

I'm OK with it.

Now, don't come at us 'cause
there's like a hundred

ways to get this job done
and everybody's got

different opinions, but...

For every five tips
we give you on how to

do it, we're gonna give
you six tips on what not to do.

Maybe, maybe, but we're gonna
give you reasons why

we're choosing to do the methods
that we're choosing to do.

And then depending on how it
looks at the end, we'll either

cut and buff or start
assembling it.

So it's a four-day auto spa.
Yeah.

All right, so we're gonna get
started on this.

We have a lot of work ahead of
us, and then later in the week,

this one is gonna get sent off,
and it's gonna get a full

cosmetic treatment.
-To other professionals.

[Alex] We're gonna compare
the paint jobs,

take them on a cruise up to
Bob's Big Boy

to show off our work,
and we're gonna check out

the other paint jobs
and what they might have cost.

Yes, please.
Car keys and starch.

Yeah, you know
what I was thinking?

It's kind of like us
versus them.

Versus who?
A legitimate paint

and body shop?

-Yeah.
-Or us against Bob's Big Boy?

No, us against the paint
and body shop.

'Cause that's me -- us versus
a burger, me versus a burger.

I come out on top every time.

Well, then, I mean, just carry
that attitude right on into

the paint job.

[Lucky] So we just got done
unloading everything out

of the back of the Typhoon.

By everything, I mean,
doors, glass, moldings,

trim, cladding.

This is all the side cladding
for the car.

Rear pieces, as you can see,
these are like the bumper

extensions that go on the side.

This is supposed to be three
and a half feet longer.

We're sending stuff out
to Sportmachines.

They have a procedure over
there where they have a mold of

some sort that puts
these things back together.

You put the original stuff
in there, it fuses them back

together, makes them like new,
makes them pliable, takes care

of stuff like this, which...
Oh, um.

I'm interested to see that.

So if you have a project at
home that you're considering

having painted, do yourself
a favor, and I'll do the body

shop a favor too,
take it apart,

take as much off as you can.

Take off the bumpers, take off
all the molding that goes

around the doors,
the rubber that goes

around the windows.
It's not very difficult.

Take off the rear view mirrors,
the lenses, all that stuff.

You take it apart,
save yourself some money,

get a good job,
they'll appreciate it.

You'll appreciate it.

[Alex] First thing on the list,
we're going to sand all of

the panels to create a textured
and clean surface for our first

coat of epoxy primer
to bond to.

We're gonna start with
an 80-grit sandpaper,

which means it's a little bit
more coarse.

So the lower the number,

30, 40, 50, that's more of
a grit and more sharpness than

the higher the number.

So we're gonna start with
an 80, which will knock some of

the rough stuff down.
I'm gonna start with a DA.

Some people think that Bondo
has to go direct to metal.

So, Bondo is a DTM --
direct to metal.

That's what they call it,
which that would be

a mechanical bond where
the Bondo is actually going in

and gripping to like a, say,
you ground it down

with 36 grit.
It's got something to grab to.

There's also the school of
thought that you put Bondo over

a epoxy primer or etching
primer or something like

a paint as a base.

And that's the way
that we're gonna do it.

So that's called
a chemical bond.

We're not actually gonna
primer it.

We're gonna use our paint
here as kind of that base.

The Bondo is going to use
the acid that's in it to melt

into, for lack of better terms,
melt into the base that

we have here.

All right, we got a lot of
the 80-grit pass done.

We have a lot more of
this process, the same thing,

different grit.
We won't bore you guys.

After this, we're going to be
sealer, Bondo, primer.

-It's going to be
a lot of fun.
-So much fun.

[relaxed music playing]

Right.
You know where we're going?

-I do.
-We're in the South Bay.

-Yes.
-And we're going to go
get paint.

-Paint.
-South Bay paint.

South Bay paint.
Duh!

What a day!

You know, we're missing
a couple more things

than paint.

While we are doing this in
five days, we snuck in while

our camera crew didn't wanna
sneak in last night.

-And we got ahead on some parts.
-[Lucky] Exactly.

All the doors have been prepped
on the outside,

and they're sealed.
-[Alex] Yep.

[Lucky] The tailgate is sealed.
Those are all flat panels.

There's not a lot of glory in
any of those.

I got one word for the roof.
Cowabunga.

-[Alex laughs]
-Amazing waves up there

Unfortunately, this car
has had some hands on it.

It's got, I don't know,
how many different types

of paint, so sealer is gonna
be important.

-Yeah.
-And then primer.

High-build primer.

-Yep.
-And then the fun part.

Yeah, so you'll notice
a couple parts of the car have

already been sealer primered,
but we have plenty of sealer

primer to shoot,
and then Bondo,

and then sanding primer,
and we're gonna do that,

like, a whole bunch.
-All right, you ready to go?

-Yeah.
-All right, let's go.

OK, we got the supplies.
Now we get the fun.

All right, well, we made it
back, huh, Alex?

We made it back.

[Lucky] If you're doing
something like this at home,

one of the biggest parts is
the prep.

[Alex]
Not only with just sanding,

but also as far as masking,
how you mask,

the quality of your materials,
it's not all the same.

Masking allows you
to only get paint

where you wanna get paint.

Or, like what we're doing right
now, it's to keep sanding dust

out of the interior so that way
we can minimize

cleanup work later.

I always thought spray
and pray was bring out

the nitrous oxide,
put in a big pill,

push the button, and pray.

Apparently, it's something else
to body and paint people.

I'm sure I'll get it by the end
of this episode.

Either way,
what we've ended up doing

is doing a bunch of body work,

prepping the Typhoon,
getting it ready for some paint.

Some of the fun part of doing
that, and I'm using the term

fun loosely here, is running
air hoses and making fittings

and making sure you're not
spraying water with the paint.

There is a small problem
of condensation.

If you have a compressor really
close to where you're actually

using the gun, the air coming
out of that tank as

it's getting pressurized creates
a certain amount of heat.

There's condensation,
there's moisture in it.

You need a way to filter that,
all the debris and contaminants

out of it, and prevent it from
spraying water, which I'm sure

you've seen if you used an air
hose close to where you're

standing, where the compressor
is, you're spraying the dirt

or something, you'll see
moisture coming out.

There's a thing called
a water trap and air dryer.

And that's exactly what
we have here.

All compacted into one thing,
including a regulator,

which is important.

We got this one for less
than 200 bucks online.

I put a couple of fittings on
either side so we can use

a conventional air hose into
this side and then use

a shorter air hose, just plug
it right into this.

But you don't want it laying
down, you want it standing up.

So I might build
a little stand for it.

I believe these hoses actually
supposed to go to a sensor that

determines how much moisture
is in there

and open them automatically.

I will be the sensor.

When I see the filter starting
to get full, I will just drain

the water myself.
However...

don't think we have
the equipment here.

Fortunately enough, I do have
some old air ride stuff.

I'm just gonna heat the end
of it, close it off,

and this will be the valve.

I think it's good.

Let's put some air in there
and see if it works.

OK.

The only thing,
leaking is our hose.

Let me put that in
a no-leak position.

[tool whirring]

[whirring slow then fast]

[whirring faster]

[whirring slows]

Scene.

[Alex] Now, when you're spraying
paint, that paint is coming out

with air pressure behind it.

So make sure you get all
those nooks and crannies

where dirt may be hiding,
'cause it will find its way

into your paint job.

So we're gonna blow it all
off, and then we're gonna go

through and wipe it down
with wax and grease remover.

So basically, it gets any oils
from your fingers, oils that

may be on the car, just any
residue that may be on there

that would affect
the paint job.

It's gonna get that off.

If we were doing the final
paint, we'd go through with

a tack cloth.
We're not doing that right now.

We'll show you that at
a later point.

And now we finally get to spray
something -- an epoxy primer

that seals in all of the layers
of old paint and body work

and creates a fresh uniform
surface for all

of the upcoming work
to build off of.

So for our epoxy primer here,
we have -- Ew.

[Lucky] We have "Ew."

-So for our epoxy primer here --
-We have Ew.

-Did I do that right?
-Yeah.

I'm learning now.

So this is Arkansas
fiberglass training.

-Ew.
-We have Ew.

Instructions say that we're
going to go one-to-one mixing.

These cups are cool 'cause
they're like speed mixing.

So it's like if one-to-one
or like our other stuff is

one-to-four or four-to-one.
-[Lucky] Four-to-one.

Four-to-one.

So you can do the different
quantities here.

So we could go down here one.

And if you go to the other one,
that would be one-to-one with

a smaller quantity.
But we want a lot.

So we're gonna do
five and five.

-We're going in deep.
-You ready to make a mess?

Count me in.

-Can you see it?
-Oh.

All right.
And the mess has begun.

All right, now we're gonna mix
the primer

and the activator up.

So then we put a strainer in
to get any of the chunks out.

[Lucky] That should go
to just over five.

That's all of it.

[Alex] So we have acetone slash
paint thinner.

Lucky's gonna run it
through the gun,

get a spray pattern figured out.

Also, that way it's not
just shooting...

[Lucky]
Yeah, yeah, it's a new gun.

It might have some
cardboard in it.

The patterns are
clean and crisp.

If you tighten the pattern all
the way down, you know

it's a nice little bullet.

Then you can adjust the amount
of material versus air.

Turn the air pressure up.

You were able to blend between
material and air.

Turn it down and then open
the fan up.

Able to shoot a lot of material
or no material at all.

So I think it's gonna work good.

-So today was a day.
-We did a thing today.

Basically, where we have it
right now is we've got an epoxy

primer on this, two coats.
-Correct, at least two coats.

-Yeah.
-Three coats in some spots.

We're gonna let it dry
overnight, and we'll be back

bright and early, hoping that
we have everything we need.

-Ready?
-Yeah.

High five!

[Alex]
Our goal today is to complete

the body filler step
of the process.

This is a really important step
because getting the body panel

straight and smooth will not
only make the sanding primer

step tomorrow much easier,
but it will also make

the overall results way better.

So, what I'm getting ready
to do this morning

is just hit it with
a long board.

So, this is a nice flat
surface, so you can see highs

and lows as you go over it.
I've sprayed a guide coat.

I've just -- black paint on it.

And I'm just gonna use that
so that way I can see where

the highs and lows are.
-Yeah, the grays.

OK, but the black
didn't dry all the way.

[Alex] Unfortunately, we had
some bad chemical reactions

to what we sprayed last night.

The epoxy primer just did not
harden properly on some spots

on the doors, and that forced
us to strip the doors back down

and re-spray them today.

So, we still have one door that
needs to be hung and sprayed,

but we're kind of a little bit
out of room, so we're a little

behind schedule
on these pieces.

We'll have to wait to do body
filler on these in the morning,

but our body over there is ready
to start the body work process.

So, one of the things about
painting is you're basically

juggling a whole lot
of moving parts

at different stages at one time.

So, you just gotta be able to
maximize your time the best

you can for the situations
that present themselves.

But we have officially entered
the next phase of our project,

sanding the epoxy primer,
which will get it ready for

whatever needs to stick to it,
either Bondo or sanding primer,

or in our case, both.

OK, so I've used the DA
and some 180 to buzz off

sort of the surface of all the
sealer that we put on the car.

We weren't really concerned
about the texture that we were

shooting, knowing that we're
gonna be knocking it down.

After this, there'll be body
work, and then we're gonna put

the high-build primer on it.

So, some things are fun,
and then some things are this.

So, right here, when we started
sanding, I was able to actually

pull sheets of our epoxy
primer off.

You can see under it,
the layer below it had

gummed up, and it was nasty,
and it was not gonna stick.

So, long story short,
went ahead

and took this down
to bare metal.

So, I'm gonna get this nice
and sanded down with a good

80 grit, get it as close as
I can get it, get all the nasty

gunk off, for the most part it
is, and we're gonna

modify, adapt,
and overcome our situation.

So, we have our body filler
right here, and then we have

our hardener in this tube.

Kinda like seasoning in
the kitchen, you know?

But for real, the more you put,
the faster it kicks.

By kick, I mean harden.

At some point, Bondo gets to
the point that you can't work

with it.
So, I'm gonna start here.

So, basically what you're doing
is you're taking your hardener

and you're kneading it into
your Bondo.

Bondo's done in layers,
and you wanna try to catch it

to sand it while it's still
somewhat soft, for lack of

a better term, or else you're
gonna have a lot harder time...

sanding it.

So, you wanna get it smooth,
but you don't wanna wipe all

of it off that you're
putting on.

So, basically the way
it works...

is you're getting
your low spots,

but you feather it out
as you go,

needing less as you move out.

So we grabbed the door
that was hanging over there.

We haven't sealed this one yet,
so it's kinda OK.

This is lined up right here,
and you can see the whole

bottom right here is not quite
lined up where it needs to be.

So what we're doing is using
the door as a guide

for the spreader.

Are you a baker
in your free time?

This looks like a fondant.

[Lucky] The line looks good.

Now we're going to "filet,"
is that the right word?

Filet the door free and then
seal the door, hang it up.

I'm just thinking about
the fact you've said

"filet" and "fondant"
in a matter of 20 minutes.

[Lucky]
Fondant, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Hey, I'm
internationally known.

[Alex] Holy shmoly.

We actually feel pretty good
about where we're at,

even though we ran into
some bumps along the way.

We have the body itself ready
for sanding primer,

and then this is ready for us
in the morning.

So, what we'll be doing is
we'll be bouncing

back and forth.

We'll do sanding primer on
the body, body work over here,

back and forth, back and forth,
and by the end of the day

tomorrow, we'll have both of
these components,

all of the groups
in sanding primer,

fresh, ready to go with
a sealer primer on it.

That way, the next day we can
come in and get color on this.

So, we're making progress
slowly but surely.

This is where you laugh at us.

I think our budget is
in the eight grand area.

-Yeah.
-But that's not just prep

and masking, that would need to

include paint and clear.
-OK.

OK, you're asking a lot.
But anything's possible.

So, color, are you guys
thinking the same color,

are you thinking of
changing color?

I think this is the original
blue, right?

I don't think it's -- I don't
know if it's original,

but I really am fond
of this blue.

[Mark] So let's walk around
the car and take a look.

-And see what we're looking at,

because there's things
that you can see

and things that you can't see.

Areas like this, I mean,
this is easy stuff.

This is just clear coat
going bad.

So that's where, when budget
comes in, how far do we strip

certain things?

Like continuing to walk around
the car, you know,

there's a couple of other areas
that are gonna jump out,

which is typical for older cars
like this.

Not changing the color up
too much.

And we disassemble everything.

What do you think?

I think, judging by what I'm
seeing here, if you guys are

gonna do all that, I could
probably turn this around in

a couple of weeks.
-Couple of weeks?

-That's nice.
-That's impressive.

A lot of times, a lot of shops
are not going to be as on top

of it as Jack's here and gets
you in in a couple weeks.

You did the Grand National.

You guys did a great job in
a short period of time.

-So I have full trust...

[Alex] All right, so I'm done
with Bondo on the body.

Really happy with
how it's looking.

Got the nice body line,
door jamb.

Everything's starting to look
good again on this side.

So I'm gonna go ahead
and blow all of this dust off.

Also, even though this is
a base and you're gonna be

like, "Oh, I'm putting sanding
primer over the top of it,"

the smoother you can get
this finish, the less likely

you run the risk of having
those sanding marks come through

at a later point in time.

We are at the point of doing
our urethane primer, which is

what we keep referring
to as a sanding primer

or a high-build primer.

So, when we say "high build,"
very self-explanatory.

You're gonna put a couple
layers on, and it's going to

build in thickness.

That way, you have some
material to take off

and get flat.

This one is a little bit
different mixing ratio

than our epoxy primer.

This is a four-to-one,
so we put four parts of primer

to one part activator, hardener,
whatever you wanna call it.

♪♪

[sprayer hissing]

I would say that was fun.

And under different
circumstances, probably

would be.
So let's have a quick lesson.

One, if your paint looks chalky
and dry before you even get it

in your cup, stop.

So we are using a little
bit more...

budget-friendly...

interpret that how you'd like,
paint for our vehicle here.

I had about that much reducer
and I need like

that much reducer.

And so, anyways, I took
reducer, which basically is

just thinning down your paint.
You could use acetone.

You could use lacquer thinner.

But reducer is basically
usually based

on different temperatures.

So the hotter it is,
the longer you need to spray

your paint, so you get
a higher-temperature reducer.

I don't know what mine was.

It literally just
says "reducer" on it.

So I put reducer in it,
got the primer thinned down.

I'm gonna go clean this up.
It's a mess.

Let that dry for a little bit.

Get ready to sand, get ready to
prime, get ready to sand,

get ready to prime, get ready
to sand, get ready to prime.

[chill music playing]

Man, this is fun.
Whose idea was this?

It is kinda fun.
You're having fun, right?

-What?
-Yeah.

Oh, yeah, I'm having
a "ba-last."

Well, we'll be here
for quite a while.

Or at least I will.

Yeah, every time I get
something done, thinking,

"Oh, OK, we're good,"
she comes behind me.

Psst, psst, psst.

That's great.
Do it again.

Wait, here, take that.

All right, with that said,
now we're going in with 320 to

get the surface even smoother,
that way our next step,

the color, is going to be
nice and smooth.

Couple spots where I've sanded
through, I'll do another coat

of sanding primer, get it nice
and smooth one more time,

and then it's time for color!
-Alex.

-Yeah.
-High spots and low spots?

Yeah.

This is the low spot
of this episode.

[Alex] So we have a couple
colors to test here.

We've tried to pick colors that
have a little bit

of depth to 'em.

We don't want a metallic
or a dark, dark color.

Yeah, cool thing about
the spray can is they actually

mix the paint.

It's not just off-the-shelf
rattle can paint.

Mix it, they put it in the can,
and then they pressurize it so

that we can actually do a fan
pattern and very much

like mixing it yourself.

[Alex] And we wanna go
single-stage paint,

meaning we don't have
to put a clear coat

on this when it's all said
and done.

And you'll see what we're gonna
spray it on when we get there,

but that way you can see
what the color looks like on

the, like, different lines.
-Right, right.

And, yeah.
So with that said, let's go.

-Ready?
-Yeah.

Just throw that in your frunk.

We're gonna shake that paint
as we drive back.

[Alex laughs]

So we went through a large
swatch of virtual plethora of

paint possibilities, right?

Are you just trying to use
big words?

Yeah.
Like dunkelgrün and hellgrün.

We looked at some dunkelblaus,
some hellblaus.

[with foreign accent]
Some orange,

which is pronounced exactly
the same in any language.

Some gelb.

I think I like this blue
better than that blue, though.

I do, too.
This is hellblau.

Hold on.
Maybe you should go upwind.

I don't know a lot about
painting, but I know you're

supposed to be upwind.

'Cause when the police get
there, they're like, "Hey...

who painted the blue?"

♪♪

[Lucky]
Um, what do you got there?

[Alex] I got green.

I got [with foreign accent]
"orange."

-I knew it.
-[Lucky] Just fun to say.

♪♪

[Alex] And now, all we have
to do is this side.

[Lucky]
A super important part of
painting a car is dust control.

Working outside, you can expect
to get some dirt in your paint.

There are a couple of options
to help manage the dust.

One of them would be renting
a paint booth.

Shopped around, and I saw that
there was 125 bucks for

three hours.
It seemed super reasonable.

The other option would be buy
one of those inexpensive,

inflatable paint booths
off the internet.

They look like they're gonna
manage the air.

There's filtration.

The one thing we've not talked
about yet is overspray.

So it's gonna keep the overspray
and the whole shop down.

Those were only
a thousand bucks.

We got one of those
because we're going to paint

more cars in the future.

If you're only gonna paint one
car, maybe you're looking

to rent that local paint booth.

OK, we may have overdone
it a little.

OK, body work is done,
as done as it's gonna be.

I think that's like, we're at,
I don't know, probably 20 hours

of sanding and Bondo time.

So when I say four days,
or when we say four days,

it's four full, legit days.

So now it's time to get ready
to unmask this, and we're going

to head inside, prep it,
all that good stuff,

and probably re-mask it.

[Lucky] Hey, can you guys settle

-Huh?

I'm trying to rest here.

Are you kidding me?

This is a private residence.

That's actually pretty nice.

So 13 feet, this is
where the back

of the car is right here.

OK, and that's with it all
the way nosed up?

-[Lucky] Right.
-[Alex] The purpose of

this paint booth
and why we're not just

doing it out there is one,
because we don't wanna get

paint everywhere
outside, but two...

Previous episodes of
"Hot Rod Garage,"

we learned this lesson.
-[Alex laughs]

Two -- we wanna have a nice
controlled environment here

where the stuff out there is
not getting in here.

So that's why we've dusted
the stuff off coming into this.

We wanna keep this
nice and sanitary.

[Lucky] Yeah, sterile,
as sterile as possible.

[Alex] Yeah.

All right, so now that we have
everything in here,

we did a wipe down on
the outside with the dust.

Now that we're finally starting
to be ready to button up

the booth, doing a final
wax and grease.

I'm wearing gloves because if
your fingerprint oils get on

here, it could show up
in the paint.

There's still some low spots
that I don't like,

but it's pretty flat.

So on these spots where you see
different color,

the color isn't so much the big
issue that you're gonna have

when you get to your paint,
where you're gonna see

splotching, but the different
textures is what can get you.

So metal, different kind of
paint, primer, all of that.

So it's really important.

The next step we're gonna do
after this, well, we're gonna

tack with a tack cloth
after this, but after that,

when we actually go to spray,
the sealer that we're going to

do is gonna help
even that out.

So what I'm gonna do first
is take a sealer

and go over the spots,

spot spray those different
areas, and then do one more

final pass of sealer.

So that way, it'll kind of lock
everything in,

smooth those textures out.

A million different ways to do
it, but that's how we're doing

it, and hopefully that
helps you.

[Alex] All right.
It's go time.

I'd be lying if I didn't say
I was nervous.

I am nervous because
it's like the make-or-break.

And I already know I'm gonna
be too hard on myself.

So I'm trying to go easy
on myself.

So the first coat is important
'cause it's forming a tack coat.

So that means that you wanna
go with a medium coat.

So not too light,
but not too thick.

'Cause the first coat
is gonna be

the most susceptible to runs.

And then after that, you can do
a thicker coat 'cause it's not

going to run as easy.

So, I'm new to this.

I know what I need to do.
It's just the actual technique.

I'm gonna suit up, go in,
and start out in the door jambs

to try to get a feel for
the gun and how the paint's

gonna lay down.

And the last week of work comes
down to the next three hours.

[Alex] All right, so first coat
is on, and I'm actually

really happy about it.

The paint is laying down really
well, and the bodywork isn't

actually that bad.

So, of course, there's always
more that you can do,

but what you see behind us
isn't TV magic.

We legitimately have done this
in five days.

I've had many late nights
of those five days,

very little sleep this week.

So it's been long days,
but it's doable.

Where we're gonna leave this
off is you guys can --

you guys can go home.

By home, I mean stay on
your couch or wherever you're

watching this for a couple
more seconds.

I'm going to be in here
for a couple hours.

You don't have to watch all
this paint.

It's gonna be more spray,
spray, spray, cloud,

green, spray, spray,
spray, mixed paint, green.

It's not gonna really change
looks for you guys until later

once we get the cladding on.

With that said,
I'm going to go back in,

get another coat of paint.

Most likely, I'm gonna end
up laying three coats.

That way, we have a nice,
thick paint.

And we will see you guys
in a second.

So, it's been a few weeks since
you've seen our Typhoon sitting

in the paint booth after
we finished spraying it

and unmasking it.

We got the cladding back,
got it painted, and then got

the Typhoon reassembled.

We even got some fresh gold
wheels to go with our green

paint, and I have to say,
it's looking really good.

Turns out, the ventilation in
our blow up booth just did not

cut it when we came to spraying
a really heavy coat of paint.

So, unfortunately,
there's a light coat of

overspray on part of
the panels, making some of it

look a little bit flat.

While this will all cut
and buff at a later point in

time, and it's going to shine
up really nice, this really

truly is the result of five
days of paint and bodywork.

And I have to say,
pretty impressed with it.

Now, we're headed off to Jack's
to pick up the Nova,

and then we're going to head
over to Bob's Big Boy,

put both of our paint jobs on
display, and then see if we can

find any other home-sprayed
paint jobs there.

So, interestingly enough,
we have a fuel pump that has

got some kind of problem.

There's a ghost
in the machine.

At idle, it's not got a lot of
fuel pressure.

It's only got, like, 25.
It should have about 45 to 50.

-So let's just keep driving.
-[Alex] It's just at idle.

Right.

It drives good
when it's driving.

It's the whole, like,
getting to that part that's

the hard part.
-Yeah.

-I think we made it.
-We actually made it.

I don't know if we'll leave
here, but we made it here.

If I was toast, I would be
done right now.

-That was a long drive.
-It was.

It was very scenic, very fun.

I see something, though,
that looks a little bit better

and potentially running
a little better.

-[Alex] Look at this thing.
-Look at this thing, buddy.

OK, hang on.
Do you remember?

-This was red.
-[Lucky] This was a red hood.

[Alex] This is pretty heavy
on some sparkles.

[Lucky] Yeah, this is a GM,
like, metallic.

[Alex] Yeah.
If you get up real close,

you can see it.
It looks really good.

So we took ours
completely apart.

-Yeah.
-And it looks good.

-Yeah.
-Don't get me wrong.

-It looks great.
-Yeah.

It doesn't look like this.
And we just threw him the keys.

Yeah, I agree.
I am going to probably sound

partial, but I am very partial.

I actually am very, very,
very proud of our Typhoon paint

job, because the spray looked
freaking so good at 2 AM

After that, I started spraying
real heavy coats.

There was so much overspray
that just there was no

ventilation in the booth.
It ended up falling back on it.

And so there's some spots that
are a little rougher

than we'd like.

So I'm not a fan
of that paint booth.

And I honestly feel that
if we had time,

I actually feel confident.

I don't care about what anyone
else says.

I feel confident in my skills
that I could've done a killer

paint job with the bodywork
that we did.

Oh, no, the bodywork
looks great.

[Alex] Yeah -- But the spray
doesn't look that bad.

[Lucky] No, the spray looks
great too.

It's just the overspray
that's all over it.

It's not you.
It's on the paint booth.

[Alex] Thanks.
But this is definitely...

Note to self, you can't paint
a car in a bouncy house.

This definitely, though,
looks really good.

It's a lot more complicated
paint than what we did.

[Lucky]
And it's also done, like,
in a professional facility.

-This is what they do.
-[Alex] Yeah, it looks good.

So, yeah, I know how you feel
about it.

-You know how I feel about it.
-Yeah.

What did you think once
you got it here and actually

got to take some pieces apart
and look at it?

You know, as always, it was
more work than we thought.

-They always are.

[Mark] But you guys stepped up
and put a bunch of brand new

trim on it, which really helps.
I like the color.

I think we came real close
to what the color was.

[Alex] Oh, it looks great.

The color is one of
those seven layers of blue

that it was, and this is the one
that I liked.

-You somehow read our mind.
-Is this like a Marina Blue?

It's close to Marina Blue.
It's actually a special mix.

-And this is two-stage, right?
-Yeah, base gold, clear blue.

So how long did you have in
this from the time it showed up

to the time we're taking it?
-Three weeks, probably.

Do you feel -- were you guys
consistently on it

for that time?
-Nope.

You can't be.
You have to get on and off it.

You gotta give it time to cure
once you sand it down

and prime the stuff.
We didn't strip it.

We stripped areas on it,
and then we primed that.

[Alex] I am happy with it.

[Mark] Yeah, I'm glad you guys
like it.

I was happy to take care
of it for you.

this truck?

Did you paint your car,
or did somebody else paint it?

I painted it.

[Alex] So how long do you have
in your restoration here?

22 months.

[Alex] How much do you have in
it, do you think?

Probably three.

Is that accounting for what
you would think of

as your labor, or is that
materials only?

-Materials only.
-[Alex] So that's interesting.

I have to also ask,
what year did you paint this?

-2009.
-Wait, what year were you born?

-'97.
-Oh.

Maybe a sensitive subject,
but how much do you think

you have in paint
and body work?

Oh, yeah, this is good,
'cause you sent it to a legit

shop that does high-end
work, yeah.

Close to 20.

[Lucky] Plus, this is a super
expensive color.

-Absolutely.
-[Lucky] Yeah, yeah.

[Alex] Would you say on yours,
is it the typical rule of a 50%

material cost, 50% labor?
How would you split that?

It used to be like $3,500 just
for the material for the paint.

-Now it's close to $6,000.
-Yeah.

And that's on a good day,
I feel like.

That's on a good day.
That's on a good day.

So that kinda changes on
an ongoing basis.

[Alex] Overall, it was a really
good time.

I think we learned a lot.

I have personally grown up
in the paint, the, like,

show-car world.
My dad does --
-That's your thing, yeah.

Yeah, my dad, like, grew up
watching paint and everything,

and I think based on walking
around this car show,

you can hear a very wide range
of prices.

There was stuff from super
high-end to I did it myself.

Let's talk about the cost
of ours.

This over here, which we had no
labor costs, 'cause we were

doing it ourself, we did have
to buy all the supplies,

all the materials,
all the tools,

'cause we didn't have that.
-And a paint booth.

And a paint booth, which was
$1,000 on its own.

We were into it about
$6,000 total.

Parts, materials,
and equipment and everything?

Yeah.
Now, keep in mind, that's lower

on the materials list on some,

a little mid-range on
the actual color paint.

We did get a little love from
South Bay Paint just because

we deal with them often.
-Yeah.

And we also got pretty good
tools to work with.

So keep that in mind.
Over here, though.

-Did you just call me a tool?
-I did not.

-All right.
-But you thought it.

-OK.
-And if the shoe fits...

-That's all I gotta say.
-OK.

All right, the Nova at Jack's,
because they're our friend over

there, was right at $9,000.

Now, keep in mind, this car was
not stripped all the way down.

There was still a lot of work
done to it.

So we just say that to say
you could have anywhere from

a couple thousand dollars
to $20,000, $30,000, $40,000.

Both of these are very
reasonable for

the results we got.

I've seen some crazy expensive
paint jobs.

I mean,
you get over $100,000.

But we won't go there,
'cause that hurts.

So if you're going to look
at doing a paint job,

there's a couple of things
to consider.

A -- don't be scared.
Just do it.

Do you have any artistic
skills, patience,

or potential ability to do
a good job?

I'd like to take those dollar
savings and put in the work any

day of the week.

I personally enjoy doing
paint and body.

I do not.

We have very different
experiences with both.

-Yes.
-But we have two painted cars,

and two that look a whole lot

better than they did when
we started this episode.

That is very true.

And I am driving the coolest
one, in my opinion.

We have a lot of people
