I want you to meet my friend.

There was nobody there.

She talked about picking
her father or picking me.

All of a sudden,
the fire took off--

whoosh.

Jada was screaming
bloody murder.

Andrew told me that there
was a bombing at his house

and that's how he died.

And she said I saw men
in robes and some of them

were holding tall sticks with
shiny gold crosses on the top--

It wasn't a story that I
wanted my son to be a part of.

She's remembering
not being Jada.

Doctors said,
there's something

wrong with your child.

Where was this coming from?

We were very scared.

This was probably one of
the most horrific moments

in my life, because there was
nothing I could do to help her.

My name is Mary Helen.

I grew up in
Martinsville, Virginia.

Martinsville is located
in southwest Virginia.

It was a really fun place to
grow up as a child, very safe,

kind of quiet and mild in
terms of crime or anything

that would not be
safe for children.

So it was it was a
great place to grow up.

I have two daughters,
Jemma and Jada.

My pregnancy with Jada was
unusual from the beginning.

I was just sick constantly.

I developed a hernia because
I just threw up constantly.

It was a very hard
time physically.

Three weeks before I was
due to give birth to Jada,

I was really, really sick.

I had a horrible chest
infection and a very severe case

of bronchitis.

And I just had a burning
heat in my chest.

It felt like I was
coughing up broken glass.

And then that morning at
4 o'clock, my water broke.

She came very quickly.

I was good.

She was good.

Literally, it was a couple
of pushes, and she was out.

We have always
called Jada the bird.

I nicknamed her that
because, when she came out,

the midwife joked that she
shot out so fast that she flew

across the room.

She was a quiet baby,
just smiled all the time.

She never really cried unless
something was actually wrong.

And she was a very
shy little girl,

very happy, but very quiet.

Their father was
from New Zealand.

And he left to go
back to New Zealand.

So from the time they were three
and one, then I was on my own

with them.

And they go to New Zealand
half the year to visit him.

Jada has been telling me since
she was about three years old

that she was glad she
picked me as her mother.

She talked about picking
her father or picking me.

This is something
she's been doing

since she's been able to speak.

There's that feeling
of "aw" and excitement.

And then you're
kind of like, ooh,

OK, that's not something
you hear every day.

Jada talks about having a
memory of life between lives.

As she describes it
in her own words,

it would be like
watching a slideshow.

And she remembered
seeing who I would be,

who her father would be, who her
sister would be, and that she,

more or less, hand-picked us,
and that we would be the people

that would best serve her
needs in her life as Jada--

kind of making me go, OK,
you're quite aware of what you

actually came here and chose.

It wasn't just a random
type of a statement.

She would back it up
with other things that

made me begin to think, OK,
she's really remembering

a different time.

She's remembering
not being Jada.

In our house, the girls
each have their own rooms.

Jada has never once slept
in her own room ever.

She would always
prefer to be with me.

And that generally
shifts down the line.

But this was something
very different.

She just couldn't go
to sleep on her own.

I'm Jada's sister, Jemma.

And I'm 12.

Jada always slept with me
or slept in my mom's bed.

It's been that way for as
long as I can remember.

It bothers me that she
comes into my room,

because I like to
sleep like a starfish.

It does worry me that she
can't sleep alone, because she

should, by this age.

But she's still too scared.

It wasn't a fear of the dark.

It wasn't one individual thing.

It was just this whole idea
of being left somewhere

by herself.

It's not a spoiled-type thing.

It's not a, oh, I just don't
want to sleep in my own room

kind of thing.

There's something else there.

I noticed that she had
a very difficult time

with being left on her own.

Jada would always
have me go upstairs

to the bathroom with her.

If I went upstairs
to the bathroom,

she would come with me.

Unless she was deeply
engrossed in a movie or a show

with her sister
sitting with her,

I could slip out and maybe
go downstairs and do laundry.

Jada told me often that
she was afraid to be alone.

Jada always and still does
want my mom to be there.

The weird thing was,
even though she doesn't like

to be alone, Jada doesn't
like crowds either.

She'd go into a crowd, but
she does not like crowds.

And she's very vocal about
not liking crowds either.

Even in the
schoolroom situation,

she would have 25
students in her class.

And for her, that's
just way too many.

She's gotten more
accustomed to it.

But she's still very
cautious if left in a crowd,

like, say, with her dance class.

What time are you
going to be back?

Are you coming back?

And she has another peculiar
thing where she will say,

do you see this turning out OK?

Do you see me getting
out of this situation?

As a mom, you hate to see
your child afraid of anything.

I just didn't know
how to help her.

My name is Michele.

I live in Virginia Beach.

And my son is Andrew.

Andrew is four.

Virginia Beach is very well
known for the ocean front,

a lot of fishing.

It's very well known
also for the restaurants.

I had a normal
pregnancy with Andrew.

There was nothing
out of the ordinary.

As a baby, Andrew
was very quiet.

There would be
times where he would

sleep for long periods of time.

It was very different with
him sleeping all the time,

because all my other
children were up every hour

and a half, every two hours.

I thought, OK, he's
wants to sleep.

And everything was fine.

But we became worried
when he would not

wake up for his feedings.

I was kind of concerned a
little bit because the periods

of time that he would
sleep was abnormal.

He lost
almost two pounds.

I had taken him to the doctors.

And the doctor said,
there's something

wrong with your child.

We were very scared.

They ran tests.

They did a brain scan.

And everything came back normal.

Eventually, everything was fine,
and he gained all the weight

back.

We were so relieved.

Andrew was more advanced
than my other seven children.

Andrew acted older than his age.

He was doing stuff
ahead of time.

He was walking before
he was a year old.

And he was riding a
bike at the age of two

without training wheels.

He's always
been very bright.

He'll have conversations with
you as if he were a little man.

Some of the things
he'll talk to you

about will kind of
put you back that it's

coming from four-year-old.

He just always seemed a little
bit well-behaved, not so

rambunctious as most
toddlers his age would be.

He was always well mannered
for someone as young as he is.

The other children always
played with each other.

Andrew played mostly by himself.

I didn't really think
anything odd of it.

All children are different.

I call this the
secret power push.

That
was his personality.

That was just the way he was.

It didn't worry me that
much until I heard him talking

to people.

I was sitting on a couch
watching TV at the time

that Andrew had come into the
living room and said, Mom,

I want you to meet my friend.

And there was nobody there.

He was adamant about it, telling
me, Mommy, you don't see him.

I don't think she really
knew how to take it.

And there's been other
occasions when he'll

say he's talking to someone.

It landed.

At first, I thought it
was imaginary friend--

until I realized
that it wasn't.

When my son was
born, he slept more

than any baby I've ever seen.

I had taken him to the doctors.

And the doctor said,
there's something

wrong with your child.

They ran tests.

They did a brain scan.

Everything came back normal.

He was more advanced and
learned things a lot faster

than your normal child.

But when Andrew turned three,
something strange happened.

When Andrew came to me
and introduced his friend,

there was nobody there.

He was adamant about it, telling
me, Mommy, you don't see him.

And I said, no, I don't see him.

I asked Andrew.

I said, who are
you playing with?

And I couldn't
believe his answer.

He said Uncle Mike.

She said, you're
talking to Uncle Mike?

He said, yeah, he's here
with me, and we were playing.

And he was watching over me.

And it had kind of taken her
back because her and her uncle

were very close.

I was in shock.

Andrew was only two years
old when my uncle passed away

a year prior.

He really didn't know him.

Andrew is not the kind of
child that makes stories up.

I asked him if he plays
with Uncle Mike often.

He said, yes, all the time.

My daughter, Eva, who
was eight years old,

she saw him talking to no
one and ran out of the room

and said, I'm
scared of him, Mom.

I'm scared of Andrew.

I couldn't see
what he was saying,

and I wondered if it was
connected to something bigger

than I couldn't explain.

One day in November, I was
in a kitchen making dinner.

And Andrew walks in and
starts crying hysterically.

My first question to him
is, Andrew, are you OK?

Did you get hurt?

But he was physically OK.

He wasn't hurt.

It took me a good 20
minutes to calm him down.

Andrew finally stopped crying.

And he asked me, Mommy,
why did I die in that fire?

I said, is this a dream?

Did you have a dream last night?

And he said no, Mommy.

I picked Andrew up, and I
consoled him and told him

that Mommy would never let
anything happen to him.

It really didn't seem to
help because he was so upset.

I kept holding him, but he
kept repeating over and over.

Mommy, why did I
die in that fire?

There was never any fire,
and I didn't understand

what he was talking about.

My wife called me and told me
he had approached her sobbing

asking her why he
burned in a fire.

She could see in his face
that he was very sincere.

And so she started
to cry with him,

trying to reassure him that
she wouldn't let that happen

to him.

I started crying.

As a mother, you never
want to see your child hurt

because the most important
job of any parent

is to protect your child.

I thought, at that age, that
it was very strange for a child

to be talking about death.

There is no way that
Andrew could have got this

from watching TV because we
don't let him watch anything

like that.

When I got home that
night, me and Michele

sat down and spoke more of it.

And she was able to get more
into detail of what he had came

to her and talk about.

The more he talked,

the more details he gave.

Andrew told me that
he lived in Georgia.

He kept saying semper.

And he wore military clothing.

And then he told me
how the fire started,

and I could not believe my ears.

Andrew had told me that there
was a bombing at his house

and that's how he died.

The way he talked to us, it was
like he was actually recalling

something that happened to him.

Where is this coming from?

Jada was always very
adamant from day one

about this knowledge that she
had chosen me as her mother

and that she had
chosen her father.

Jada has always been concerned
with the safety in our house.

If we burn a fire, she's
not afraid of the fire.

But she will ask, are
our fire alarms working?

Have you changed the batteries?

Is everything OK with that?

It's uncanny how she
fears for her safety.

And this is something that
has been going on for as long

as she's been with us.

I never really expected
her to grow out of this.

I always had the feeling that
it would come to a head someday.

I'm Shannon.

And Mary Helen and I have been
best friends since college.

I think Jada is a
wonderful little girl,

and I love both of the
children very much.

When I come and
visit Jada and Jemma,

Jada always has little stories
to tell me that things happen

to her in her dreams.

People come and visit her.

She hears noises.

And she just tells
me the stories.

But there are some things
that are just a little way

out there.

A few years ago, something
happened with Jada that really

freaked me out.

The girls and I had gone to
the Festival of the Fires

in Ireland for several years.

We had never participated in
marching in the parade or any

of the bigger events because
the girls were so young.

But when Jada was
six going on seven,

they asked the children
to be in the parade, which

marched around the big bonfire.

The girls were excited,
and they agreed to do this.

They got all dressed up.

They were carrying
flags and banners.

And the processional
started pretty far away

from where the huge bonfire was.

And it wound its
way up the hill,

and then eventually,
everybody went and circled

the big bonfire.

In keeping with
Jada tradition, I

had to walk alongside the
processional going up the hill

so that Jada would
even participate.

Everything was going
along smoothly.

And people were chanting
and singing and dancing.

And then they lit the bonfire.

And at first, you could
hear the crackling,

and the fire was kind of
building from the side that

was opposite to where
we were standing.

Then all of a sudden,
the fire took off,

and the entire bonfire was lit.

And within seconds, Jada
was screaming bloody murder.

And she was rolling around on
the ground just screaming help,

help, help, help.

I wasn't far away, so I went
running straight over to her.

So eventually, I had to
pick Jada up, throw her

over my shoulder, and carry
her the entire way down.

And this hill is a big hill.

I was pretty upset
seeing her that way.

She got in the car,

and it was like
she'd seen a ghost.

She was petrified.

So I drove home.

And I was trying to talk
to her the whole way home.

And Jemma was holding her
hand, and she was trying

to talk to her-- nothing.

I mean, she was
absolutely beside herself.

She had seen something.

Something had happened in that
moment that absolutely changed

her.

I didn't really understand
what was going on for her,

but I felt bad for her.

This was not simply the
case of a little girl being

frightened by a large crowd.

This was serious
to the point where,

if another medical
professional had been there,

they would have thought
she was having some kind

of a psychotic episode.

The whole thing was
incredibly distressing.

I have never been more afraid.

My son, Andrew, said
a bomb hit his house

and started the fire.

He told me he was from Georgia
and kept repeating the words

semper.

We were so confused and scared.

I began to wonder if he was
talking about a past life.

This is Virginia Beach.

We're in the South.

The South is very religious,
and the idea of reincarnation

is not accepted.

I'm Catholic, so I never
really thought that much about

reincarnation until my
son started telling me

his story about fire.

I just want to get
to the bottom of this

and see where this
fire actually happened.

I started doing research so I
could see if anything matched

Andrew's story.

He said there was
eight houses in a row,

and they were bombed and then
a fire, and they were all gone.

I found a story about two
children who had died in a fire

that their mother had set.

She was from Georgia.

She tried to kill her husband
but accidentally killed

her children.

The family lived
on an Army base.

Andrew had told me that
there was a row of houses,

and that would be
common on a base.

So that seemed like
a connection to me.

Although that story was kind of
close, there was no explosion.

So I decided to keep looking.

This is a really tough thing
for me to read these stories,

because I don't want my son
to have gone through something

like this.

But we need to solve
this not just for Andrew

but for our entire family.

Then somebody mentioned
to me what semper meant,

and it set me in a
whole other direction.

And then it became clear.

It wasn't a story that I
wanted my son to be a part of.

My daughter, Jada, talked
about choosing her parents

in heaven.

And Jada was constantly
worried about danger

around every corner.

This was probably one of
the most horrific moments

in my life, because there was
nothing I could do to help her.

The worst thing was that
she wouldn't talk about it,

so we had no way of
knowing what was going on.

I don't know if Jada was
unable to talk about it,

or she couldn't talk about it.

We couldn't get her to come
back into reality and to focus.

In the morning,
when she awakened,

the first thing I wanted to
know was, what in the world

happened last night?

She just kind of blanked me as
if to say, don't even go there.

Jada wouldn't speak of it.

As a mom, I wanted
to push Jada to tell me

what was going on.

But as a doctor, I recognized
that something else was

happening here, and it
was better not to push her

and to let her tell me what
had happened in her own time.

Jada has always
been afraid of crowds.

So it made sense
why she was nervous.

But the meltdown that Jada
had seemed out of proportion

for just being in a crowd.

Something was going on.

For days after the incident
took place, I'd periodically

check in with Jada and
see if she wanted to talk,

because her clinginess,
it got so much worse.

Mom?

And it was quite obvious
to me that this was not

something that was going
to go away overnight.

I spoke to some
friends and colleagues.

And the general consensus
was it was no big deal.

I shouldn't be worried and
that it probably would never

happen to Jada again.

About six months later, Jada
was taking a bath one Sunday

morning.

Mom?

And I was right
next to the bathroom

where I could talk to her
and she could hear me.

Jada just suddenly
called me and said, Mom,

do you remember that day?

Do you remember the fire?

And I hadn't thought about this
in months now at this stage.

And I said, yeah, of
course I remember.

And she said, do you want
to know why I got so upset?

And I was absolutely
flabbergasted.

I couldn't believe that she was
talking so casually about it.

It was like, again,
something had shifted.

It was like this awareness
just came about her,

and she could speak very
matter-of-factly about it.

She wasn't crying.

She was just suddenly ready
to tell me what happened.

Jada says to me,
Mom, do you remember

when they turned on the fire?

I agreed.

And I said, yes, I remember.

And she said, well,
I saw something.

What did you see?

And she said it was like
a movie in my head except

for it was outside of my eyes.

It was all around me.

It sounded like she was
having some kind of a vision.

I said, what did you see?

And she said, I saw men
with swords all around.

And I saw men in robes,
and they were white robes.

Some of them were holding tall
sticks with shiny gold crosses

on the top.

And she said they
were very, very scary.

They were going to make me die.

And so instead, I
walked into a big fire.

And I said, what do you
mean you walked into a fire?

She said, they were
going to kill me anyway.

I actually gasped and
fell against the wall.

It made complete sense to
me now how awful that night

must have been for her.

As her mom, I was
utterly horrified.

When Jada first started
talking about this incident,

I didn't have any
idea what to expect.

I didn't know if
this was now over,

if she had said what she
needed to say, and that was it,

and we'd never hear
about it again.

But what actually happened
was the floodgates opened.

Rather than becoming
frightened by this memory,

she suddenly became
very curious and wanted

to know more about it.

Jada started drawing
a lot of pictures.

It was worrying to see
this kind of artwork

turning up in Jada's drawings.

Obviously, this was something
that was on her mind.

A lot of people would say that
this is a kid with a very vivid

imagination.

When I heard the story from Mary
Helen, the mask, the whole nine

yards, there was fire--

I thought Jada had probably
just seen a movie on TV

about the KKK.

That is my only explanation
that I could see.

Once I began to connect
the night of the Festival

of the Fire with this picture
that she continuously drew,

I began to piece things together
from when she spoke of choosing

me, choosing her father, her
sister, some of these fears

and insecurities that seem just
a little bit beyond the normal

for a child.

All of a sudden, I began
to realize that we might

be talking about a past life.

My daughter Jada remembered
picking her parents.

And it seemed like
she was always

in a constant state of worry.

After a traumatic
incident at a bonfire,

she began having visions of
people being burned alive

by men in white robes carrying
shiny gold crosses on sticks.

This was definitely one of
the most horrific moments

in my life, because I was
completely and utterly

out of control.

I had no way to
help my little girl.

It was really painful
to see her that way.

And there was
nothing I could do.

I figured this had something to
do with religious persecution

because of the gold crosses.

Her drawings and her
descriptions of them

made it seem like it was
something that took place

in the Middle Ages.

I decided to focus on
the robe and the crosses

and the fire from her pictures.

My research ended up taking me
to a place high in the Pyrenees

in France to a place
called Montsegur.

A sect of people lived
there called the Cathars.

They were persecuted by the
Christians during the Crusades

in 1244.

The Cathars were a
group of people who

had very high moral standards.

They were persecuted by
the Christians for the fact

that they didn't follow
the Catholic Church.

High on a hill over 3,000
feet in the Pyrenees

was the last stronghold
of the Cathars in 1244.

And when I saw a
picture of Montsegur,

it looked strangely similar
to the hill of Uisneach

where the Festival of
Fires had taken place

and Jada had her traumatic
memory of being burned alive.

The Cathars were
given a choice where

they could have gold crosses
stitched to their clothing

and they would profess to
convert to Christianity,

or they were going to be
tortured and burned alive.

So in an act of defiance, the
last remaining group of Cathars

walked themselves into fire.

It took me a long
time to work out

exactly what about the
Festival of the Fires

triggered the memory for Jada.

Before, we had just
been spectators.

This time, they walked
towards the fire

the very same way that
the Cathars in Montsegur

had walked or marched themselves
into the fire at the end

in 1244.

So it was never a fear
of fire that she had.

It was this specific act
of walking to a fire that

triggered the memory for her
of walking in and being burned

alive.

We live in a small
town in Virginia.

And reincarnation is not
something we all believe.

I love Mary Helen and the
girls, but I just wasn't sure

if it was a past
life experience.

In the course of my
research, I discussed with Jada

what I had found out.

And it all seemed
very familiar to her.

She started filling in
the gaps in the story line

as I would tell her things
that I had read in my research

and discovered.

And she'd go, oh, yes,
and so-and-so was there,

and this is what
they were carrying.

And this is what it
looked like, and this

is what it smelled like.

And it wasn't just listening to
my story and nodding the head.

It was she'd heard this story
before because she'd lived it,

and she was telling me
what really happened there.

She knew that this was real.

And it wasn't too long before
I knew this was real as well.

I'm Jada.

I'm 10.

I got upset because
people were fighting,

and people had crosses.

Some of them were
in white stuff.

Some of them weren't.

I was really scared because
I could remember them.

They attacked me because
I wasn't Christian.

They tried to make me one.

They said that if I would become
one, they wouldn't kill me.

And if I didn't become
one, they would kill me.

So I walked into
the fire all myself

because I didn't want
them to push me into it.

When I'm at a big, big
bonfire like it was there--

when I got burned,
it was a big fire.

It wasn't just a little
fire that would burn you.

So when I go to big
festivals and a big fire,

it gives me the shivers.

When I'm around small fires
like a fireplace, I'm OK.

This whole thing made
Jada aware of her old life.

It didn't change her personality
like the way she got up

in the morning or her dreams.

It just made her more aware.

I want her to get help so
she's not so scared anymore.

There
is an element of closure

that still needs to take
place with this story.

I know that I need
to find a way for Jada

to release the hold that this
past life still has on her.

My daughter, Jada, believes
that she was burned alive

in 13th century France.

I want Jada to be able to
release these horrible images

about her past life that
are still in her head.

I can't say I'm on
board with reincarnation.

But I will always be on board
with Mary Helen and the girls.

What happened to the Cathars

in Montsegur in 1244 is a very
important part of history.

But I want Jada to be able
to put these memories to rest

and to be able to move
on with her own life

without having the weight
of that terrible death

hanging over her
at all times so she

can be successful in this life.

I'm going to ask Jada to make a
list of the things that affect

her from her past life.

And we're going to
take those, and we're

going to turn them to ashes
so that they don't bother you

any more.

OK?

What scares her, what
makes her anxious,

what makes her fearful in this
lifetime-- so what would number

one be?

Being alone, locking doors,
sleeping alone, the dark,

being in a crowd.

That's 10.

That's great.

OK, so here's what
we're going to do.

We're going to take that list.

And how about you
fold that up for me?

OK.

And now by putting
fire to that, you're

telling all those bad
memories from the past

that you're releasing
them and letting them go.

And it's time to get on with
your life as Jada today.

OK?

Awesome.

She was destroyed by
the fire in her past life.

But now the fire
will set her free.

And maybe, just maybe, I might
be able to sleep a whole night

alone in my own bed.

The man in the robe, will

from where he came?

And it can never hurt me.

My mom and I burned the paper
of the man in the white suit

and all my fears
of my past lives.

So I do think burning them
will help my fears go away.

I do feel more safe
now that I burned them.

Now that I've burned
my past memories,

I want to stand up for people
who need help in this life.

My son, Andrew, told
me that there was an explosion

where he lived.

And he died in a fire.

He said he was from Georgia and
kept repeating the word semper.

At first, I didn't know what
semper was until I researched

it.

Come to find out, semper fi
is the motto for the Marines.

Andrew had mentioned
wearing a military uniform.

I then typed in Marines from
Georgia killed when a bomb hit

their home.

And I couldn't
believe what came up.

The bombing of the
Marine barracks in Beirut

happened in 1983.

300 service members
lived in a building

that was hit by a truck bomb.

220 Marines and
21 other personnel

were killed in the bombings.

It was the largest
death toll of Marines

since the battle of Iwo
Jima in World War II.

It made me really sad to see
how all these families had lost

their sons.

But I wanted to keep looking.

I found a list of the Marines
who had died that day.

There were six from
Georgia, six young men.

I just wanted to cry.

I was so, so upset.

I really wondered if this could
be this story, if he could

be one of the six Marines from
Georgia that had died that day.

As a parent, I was
concerned for him

because he had recollection
of him passing away in a fire.

And anything I
could do to help him

understand, it was
definitely something

I was looking to do for him to
have closure so he could move

on with his life when he's
not even five years old yet.

He's not even in kindergarten.

I have decided to show
Andrew pictures of the Marines.

I want to see if
he recognizes any

of the people in the photos.

If he does recognize anybody,
maybe we can find a way for him

to let go of his pain.

If he doesn't recognize
anyone, I still

want to find a way to help him.

I want him to feel safe
in his current life.

I have to do this
for my little boy.

I don't know what will
happen if I don't.

Since age three, Andrew
has talked about dying

in a fire from an explosion.

He repeatedly said
the word semper

and told us he was from Georgia.

After doing a lot of research,
I have found a few stories that

match what Andrew was saying.

There was a bombing in Beirut
where six Marines from Georgia

were killed.

I do believe that Andrew is
experiencing a past life,

and the memories
are haunting him.

I decide to show him pictures
of the six Marines from Georgia

that had died in Beirut.

I'm hoping that this is
going to resolve his issues.

This will be our first step
by looking at the pictures

to get to this resolution.

was telling us about it,

it was very scary to hear
him talk about dying.

After Andrew saw

is, he's been talking

a lot about the cemetery
and how he wants to go

this trip to go well.

I am hopeful that Andrew can

to see Andrew at the grave.

To see him standing there
and being next to it

was definitely something
I wasn't expecting.

I feel that he got what
he needed out of it.

Seeing Andrew walking
around the cemetery

had made me feel relieved.

that me and my family

were able to make the trip and
do this for Andrew as a family

so he knows we're all here
to support him and be there

for him no matter what.
