used to be grown up.

I think this is the
third time I come back.

She communicated
with her brother Justin who

had died.

He goes, I
was 14 and they wouldn't

let me join the military.

That's when the
anxiety attacks started.

He came up
to me and said,

I remember when I was your size.

There's no way a five-year-old
could know that women went

to work in the city.

She said, I was
writing a letter to his wife.

There was a loud noise.

And I was killed.

He looked at me
and he goes, Mommy, I'm

going to kill them.

I was scared.

What he said next shocked me.

There was nothing I could
do to make her feel better.

My name is Jennifer.

I live in Ottawa, Canada.

Ottawa, it's a lot
of government jobs.

You've got the parliament.

You've got lots of politicians,
embassies of all kinds.

So you've got a lot of culture.

It's a very quiet
neighborhood that I live in.

It's very residential.

It's in the heart of the
city, yet it's next to nature.

We've got the river
that we walk out to.

We have nice trails and
paths that we walk right

by the river.

So it's really nice.

My daughter Jamie Lee, she's 20.

And my son Shane is 10.

When Shane was born, it
was a difficult labor.

I was so happy that he
was no longer in my belly.

Having my son in my arms
was an amazing feeling.

The pregnancy being rough,
finally getting to hold him

was really, really relieving.

Because it was rough.

Shane as a baby,
he was different.

When he was about
six months old,

I was holding him
in my arms and he

had tried to touch something.

But I tapped him
on the hand, very

lightly, just a little tap,
said, no, don't touch that.

And he smacked me in
my face with his hand.

I'm like, maybe that's
just a jerk reaction.

In another instance, I
tapped him again on the hand.

And again, he smacked
me right in the face.

His first reaction
from the time

that he was maybe six
months to a year old

was just hit right back.

He did not take any kind
of form of like, nope.

He just hits.

Most kids, if you
give them a tap on the hand,

they don't turn around
and hit you back.

But Shane would every time.

Shane had a really strong
sense of right and wrong

when he was very little.

And that sense of
justice and getting even,

that's what I would say, getting
even, where most children don't

have that sense of getting
even, like an eye for an eye.

But that was Shane.

Shane was you hit me, I hit you.

When Shane was about
2 and 1/2, that's

when I noticed there was
something really different

with him.

He had a thing for guns.

He wanted to shoot
everything with guns.

He thought guns were toys.

He wasn't watching
any gun shows.

He wasn't watching other
than a few cartoons.

There was nothing that would
really get him into wanting

to play with guns all the time.

But he had in his mind he
wanted to shoot everybody

and everything.

And he just wanted guns
and he was like shooting.

And he wanted to shoot.

Anytime he could get his
hands on stuff where he could

make a gun, he would make them.

He would always build things
and put them together.

And somehow it always
turned into him

making guns and weapons,
which was kind of odd.

And I
would say, that's not

normal to have to tell a child
night after night after night

that guns are not toys, that
they hurt, that they kill.

And finally, I got
through to him that night.

I said, Shane, what if somebody
shot Mommy and Mommy went

to heaven and you
never see Mommy again?

And then his face just changed.

He looked at me and he goes,
Mommy, I'm going to kill them.

I was shocked.

When he first looked like
that and I noticed the depth

in his eyes, it was scary.

Because you're like,
that's not a child's look.

Children don't have
that kind of anger.

It didn't make sense.

For that split second,
it took me aback.

It was freaky.

I had raised my
daughter, my nephew.

I've had many children around.

I have never, ever had to
tell any kid that guns were

dangerous every night.

I'd them once or twice,
guns aren't toys.

You don't play with guns.

It is terrifying to
think that your son is

persistent about wanting
to play with guns.

It's not something you tell
anybody about, kind of keep

that on the hush-hush.

But I was worried.

I'm like, was he born that way?

I had no clue what was going on.

I was worried because I'd never
seen that kind of behavior

in another child.

My name is Rebecca.

I live with my husband
Michael and our two kids

in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Indianapolis is a great
place to raise your kids.

There's lots of things to see.

It has history, a lot of close
communities, big families.

It's a very nice place to be.

My first born child,
his name was Justin,

and he passed away due
to a genetic disorder

when he was three years old.

He had a seizure disorder
which left him in a coma.

And the seizure disorder
and not enough oxygen

actually caused his death.

When I got pregnant again,
I was extremely nervous

because of what had
happened with my son Justin.

The geneticist that
I saw had told me

that there was a
one in 10 chance

that the condition that my
son had could happen again.

To my surprise and relief,
I had a healthy baby girl.

Taylor was born a month early.

She decided to come the
day of my baby shower.

She was born normal,
eight-pound, seven-ounce baby.

I was so excited to
have a healthy baby.

I had hope.

And it felt like a brand-new
beginning to my life.

She could walk.

She could talk.

She was very advanced
in everything she did.

Potty training took a week.

Never had to teach her how
to hold a crayon, a pencil,

pick up a fork.

She knew how to do it.

She just did it.

When Taylor was in elementary
school, I met her mother.

And they came into my life.

I have a really good
relationship with Taylor.

She's more like a daughter
to me than a step-daughter.

We get along extremely well.

Around the
age of four, Taylor

started showing signs of
behavior that was kind of odd.

Taylor had
hypersensitive hearing.

Fireworks, we would
have to stay in

and she would look
out the window.

Thunderstorms were the worst.

She could feel a thunderstorm
coming a million miles away.

I was scared.

But that was only the beginning.

One night I was
reading and Taylor

used to do this with her hands.

She would wiggle her fingers and
she would stare at the ceiling.

And I had seen her do this
on several occasions before.

But this time it was
really noticeable to me

because she was talking.

And I looked over at Taylor.

And I said, who
are you talking to?

And she said, Justin.

My blood ran cold.

Because Taylor knew
nothing of Justin.

And I said, what are you
talking to him about?

And she just said, things.

And I said, OK.

And she just continued
to play with her fingers.

There is no way that she
could have known about Justin

because it was a very painful
experience for me to go through

and a very painful
experience to talk about.

And she was at the age that
if I explained Justin and what

happened to him, there is no way
she would have understood what

I was talking about.

So at that moment, it
made me feel nervous.

But at the same time,
it was comforting.

And that helped me believe
that Justin was in a good place

and that he was
talking to his sister.

The night that Taylor told me
that she was speaking to Justin

was the first night that I
realized she was speaking

to somebody that was dead,
that she had never met,

that was not in the room.

But I did not know at that
point that that would not

be the last time.

This was something
totally alien to me.

And I didn't know what to do.

My son Shane didn't
act like other children

from the very beginning.

Shane had a sense of justice
from a very young age.

What's right, what's
wrong, and getting even.

But my main concern for Shane
was his fascination for guns.

I was really doubting
myself as a parent.

I was worried.

I was honestly worried.

When Shane was about six, we
went to a Boy Scouts meeting.

And there was a guest speaker,
a soldier in fatigues,

dressed up, standing there.

And Shane says, oh,
Ma, is he for real?

Can I go talk to him?

Come with me.

I need to talk to him.

Is he for real?

Can I talk to him?

I'm like, holy crap.

All the other kids are
running around in the gym.

They couldn't care less about
the guy standing up in front.

Shane's like [gasp].

He's like frozen.

He's like, oh, my god.

He stayed by that guy's side the
whole Cub meeting, fascinated

by the soldier.

I was confused.

This one day, he said something
that really shocked me.

This one morning
in the spring, I

was getting him
ready for school.

Shane was sitting down at
the table eating his cereal.

I was getting his
lunch ready for school.

And we're just chit-chatting.

And all of a sudden he
looks at me and he's like,

mom, did you know I
was a grownup before?

So I looked at him like, what?

He goes, yeah.

He goes, I used to be grownup.

Because I think this is
the third time I come back.

I didn't know what to answer.

I didn't want to
dismiss it either.

I just didn't know
how to respond.

I didn't think of anything other
than where's this coming from.

It was so matter-of-factly the
way he said it to me that I

knew there was more to it.

But I wasn't ready to
hear it that morning.

I definitely
thought that Shane just

had a very good imagination.

Creativity runs
through the family.

So I thought he was
just adding onto it.

We grew up Catholic.

So you die, you go to heaven.

And that's about it.

We've never talked about any
past lives or reincarnation.

I mean, it's not a
common conversation.

He wouldn't have heard
anything like that.

When Shane was three and I was
13, he came up to me and said,

I remember when I was your size.

I just looked at him.

I was like, no, you
are smaller than me.

You're my younger brother.

You've never been
taller or my size.

He was like, but I have been.

And I'm like, that
doesn't make any sense.

No, you couldn't have been.

So a couple of
weeks passed by.

And then on the weekend,
again at the breakfast table,

I sat down, I said, Shane.

I go, you remember when you told
me you were a grownup before?

He was like, yeah, I remember.

I was 14.

And they wouldn't let
me join the military.

I wanted to join the military
but they wouldn't let me join.

So he started saying,
Mom, you know the war,

the war when all the
girls went to the city.

Instead of answering,
yeah, I know the war,

I answered him with a question.

I said, well, why did the
girls go to the city, Shane?

He said, well, to work, Mom,
because all the guys were gone

to war.

And that's when I was floored.

There's no way that a
five-year-old could know this,

that the reason that the
women went to work in the city

was because the most of the guys
had been drafted to go to war.

That was World War II.

I had no idea what
was going on at that point.

My mother and I never
talked about war around him.

And he just knew all about it.

What he said next shocked me.

He said, Mom, I was shot.

I couldn't believe
what I was hearing.

It was unreal.

When my daughter
Taylor was around three,

she communicated with her
brother Justin, who had died

five years before she was born.

I was wondering what was
happening to my daughter.

I was scared.

This was something
totally alien to me.

And I didn't know what to do.

But that was only the beginning.

When Taylor was five,
we moved to Indiana.

And that's when the
anxiety attacks started.

Taylor stopped sleeping.

She basically was having
horrific nightmares night

after night after night.

Michael woke up in the
middle of the night.

And I heard screaming
from the kitchen.

And it wasn't Taylor.

It was Michael.

My first instinct
was that someone was there

that shouldn't have been, a
robber or someone breaking in,

someone there to harm us.

I walked out to the kitchen
in the middle of the night.

And there was Taylor standing
there, not doing anything, just

staring at the stove.

I didn't know what to make
of what Taylor was doing.

I thought she might
have been sleepwalking.

She was just standing there.

About a week
went by with Taylor

not sleeping and
repeatedly being terrified.

This was not night terrors.

Her nightmares were so
horrific she could not sleep.

What got me to
the breaking point

was one night when she came
in my room and she said,

Mom, there's a ghost in my room.

Rebecca told me about
some of the things

that Taylor had been seeing.

I had a hard time believing it.

I don't really believe in life
after death and supernatural

stuff.

I figured that
Taylor's lack of sleep

caused her to have
hallucinations and see things

that really weren't there.

I thought my
daughter had a mental problem

at that point, with her seeing
ghosts, with her sleepwalking,

with her being terrified night
after night after night of not

sleeping, and being miserable.

I couldn't help her.

And she was exhausted.

And she was falling
asleep at school.

And I had to take
her to the doctor.

She was diagnosed with
generalized anxiety disorder.

It means just anxiety, period.

It's not due to trauma,
not due to abuse.

There was no cause to it.

She has a level of anxiety that
I have never seen in anybody

before.

As Taylor got older,
the nightmares got worse

and the anxiety continued.

It got worse and worse
and worse and worse.

Seeing my daughter like
that was really hard on me

because you want to
help your children

and you want to stop
whatever pain they're in.

And there was nothing I could
do to make her feel better.

I felt sorry for Taylor
for not being able to sleep

and always being anxious.

And I just assumed she would
eventually get over it.

I wasn't sure
what was going on.

Nobody could tell me what was
happening with my daughter

until one night she
came to me with a story.

And I had my answer.

I could not believe
what I was hearing.

My son Shane had a way
of speaking that made you think

he was much older.

He was also so obsessed
with guns and the military.

One day he told me that
he'd lived a previous life.

But the real surprise came
when he actually told me

that he was shot and killed.

I had a feeling he needed
to tell me who he was.

That person was still in there.

And he'd been holding back
for a couple of years now.

Then things escalated.

He goes, Mom, I was shot.

He goes, and it burns.

It burns so much.

He was holding his
middle section.

And it really burns, Mom.

For me in my head, I was
like, is my son actually

telling me this?

Is this really happening?

I'm still catching up with
trying to make sense of what

I'm hearing, to actually
understand any emotion

that I was having.

I'm like, oh, my god.

It sounded like a soldier that
had been to war that had been

shot and was retelling his story
from the grave through my son.

When I found out that
he had been shot before,

it literally-- just complete
utter silence within me.

How do you even comprehend
that you can die?

No one in our family or friends
had died around the time.

So why did he know about it?

Where did it come from?

There is no TV show.

We don't have any family
members that are veterans.

There's nobody around us
that talks about this.

It's a surreal feeling because
you know that that little child

in front of you didn't actually
feel that, but he remembers it.

You know that your child
was never shot because he's

in front of you.

But he remembers how
it feels to be shot.

I'll never forget
him telling me.

Shane couldn't
lie for the life of him.

Anytime he would go to lie,
he had this giant smirk

on his face.

So when he would
say these things,

we knew couldn't be a lie.

After he told me and I started
processing all the information

and linking it to
all of his behaviors

early on as a little baby from
smacking me if I tapped him

on the fingers to this
obsession for guns,

everything was clicking.

It was like, oh, my god.

Other things that
happened up until then

suddenly made all the
sense in the world.

Now I know why.

That was a past life.

That's why it's
affecting him now.

It's not who he is today.

It's memories that are there.

For me it felt like a relief.

OK, there's no way around it.

This is for real.

He was there.

There's no way he could know
this without being there.

You know, he's carrying
all this with him.

And then he started
talking more.

And he goes, Mom,
how does it work?

Do you shrink back into a baby?

And I was like, whoa,
well, I don't know, Shane.

I don't know how it works.

How do you answer this?

How do you give him
a straight answer?

I'm completely clueless.

Taylor has communicated
with spirits her entire life

and has come to me with
fears that I can't explain.

Taylor was afraid of
fireworks and could not

sleep through the night because
of the horrific nightmares

she was having.

The nightmares were continuing.

The lack of sleep
was continuing.

It was starting to
affect her schoolwork.

It was starting to
affect her home life.

She was depressed all the time.

And it was so frustrating
because we couldn't do anything

to help her.

Nothing could have prepared
us for what happened next.

She came to me in the
middle of the night.

She was stark white.

She was sweating.

And she was absolutely
beside herself.

And she said, Mom,
something happened.

And I said, what?

She said, I had a nightmare.

I was dreaming but I
was looking at myself.

And I said, what do you mean?

And she said, I was looking
down on myself and I was a man.

I was a skinny, white
man with sharp features.

And I was writing a letter.

She remembered being a man.

That's when I knew that
it was a past life.

It was a totally
different experience.

I 100% believed in
my heart and feel it

in my bones that this actually--

I know it happened to her.

I don't really
believe in past lives

or anything really supernatural.

If you can't show me
something, I don't normally

believe it if it's not
right there in front of me.

It's the same with
my police work.

If you can't see it
and you can't prove it,

I don't really know if
I can think it's real.

The more we
talked that night,

the more memories started
coming back to Taylor.

She clearly remembers
that she was a man.

She was wearing an oversized
white shirt from centuries ago.

She was writing
with a feather pen.

Taylor remembers the
writing being long and thin.

The paper that she wrote on
was more cloth-like than paper

that you would write on today.

The only light that
she had was a candle.

But the main thing
that stuck out

was she was writing
a letter as a man.

And what was upsetting
Taylor and haunting Taylor

was the fact that she was
prevented from finishing

and sending the letter.

My daughter Taylor,
her entire life

has been riddled with anxiety.

Taylor came to me
one night and told me

that she remembered being a man
with dark hair, sharp features,

and that he was
writing a letter.

Taylor and I sat down
on my bed one night.

And we started talking
about everything.

I decided that it was time for
me to ask her all the questions

and dig deep.

Because I knew that
this was all connected.

During our talk, Taylor started
to remember more and more

stuff.

And then she came up with
the name Matthew Kopple.

And she said, Mom,
that's who I was.

I was Matthew Kopple.

Taylor got hysterically upset.

And I said, what is it?

And she said, Mom, that
letter was important.

And she was sobbing.

She said, I was writing
a letter to his wife.

She said, I got out of my chair
and I stood behind my chair.

And I turned.

And there was a loud noise.

And I was killed.

When Taylor told me that she
was killed in her past life,

I didn't feel scared or sad.

I felt relieved that now I could
connect her fear of loud noises

to her past life.

That's the answer to all the
questions that I had wondered

about for all these years.

It had gone on for so
long, her living in horror,

living in fear,
and all the pieces

were starting to
fall into place.

My name is Taylor.

And I am 16 years old.

My inability to sleep started
when I was around two or three

years old.

And I've always had a really,
really vivid nightmares,

ones that just seemed too real.

And I'd wake up in the middle of
the night in like a cold sweat.

The first time that I remember
having a past life memory,

I could feel everything
that he was feeling.

And I remember standing up.

I was really, really frustrated.

And then there was a loud boom.

And I woke up.

And it just sort
of clicked for me.

Yes, that was it,
that I was this man.

And I kind of
wanted to know more.

After our
talk, I went online.

And I was able to find a
Matthew Kopple that was killed

in the 1700s in his home.

I also found a Henry M. Kopple.

What I would like to do is
show them both to Taylor

to see if it sparks any memory.

I feel like my past
life has started to affect me.

It's still attached to me.

It still has the same fears
and the same emotions.

What was upsetting Taylor and
haunting Taylor was the fact

that she was killed before she
was able to get that letter

finished.

That is the main anxiety that
I believe my daughter had.

Whoever Matthew Kopple was,
I believe is to this day

a part of Taylor.

But I believe it's a part of
Taylor that needs to be let go.

I truly in my heart believe that
all of the events, the trauma,

the anxiety, the pain,
the sleeplessness

is because Taylor has unfinished
business that she needs

to let go of.

For me, it's not about
what's causing Taylor have

her anxiety.

It's about her getting better.

I think Taylor needs to
finish the letter and let it go.

I do feel that I have
unfinished business to do.

I know I need to
finish that letter.

I don't want to be held
back anymore by this.

My son Shane told me
that he lived a previous life.

And he wanted to join the
military when he was 14.

I was beginning to believe
that he might be remembering

a past life.

I started doing some research.

And I couldn't
believe what I found.

I was sure it was World War II
because World War II was really

renowned for when the women
started working because so

many men were drafted.

From what Shane told me, it
couldn't be in any other war

but that one.

16 was the age of enlistment.

He was 14.

He wanted to join.

They wouldn't let him.

He would definitely have
lied about his age to get in.

I started doing more research.

I found this story
about a young boy,

his name was Reginald Earnshaw.

And he enlisted at the age of
14 in the Navy from Britain.

I found that Reginald Earnshaw
had lied about his age

to get in at 14 because the age
of enlistment was really 16.

And he died.

He was the youngest
casualty of war.

The ship that he was
on came under fire.

And a friend of his
tried to go to the boiler

room to pull him out.

But it was too hot.

They couldn't get him out.

It makes me wonder when
my son said that it burned

that something hit him, did
he get shot at the same time,

and then stuck in
the boiler room?

Was he burnt?

Is that why he felt
that burning sensation?

It's shocking that there is a
story out there that resembles

what my son's been telling me.

And I'm wondering,
could that actually

be the boy that needed
to tell his story?

Could it be?

Taylor told me that
she was killed in her past life.

The man in her past
life was prevented

from finishing the letter.

I do feel that I have
unfinished business to do.

I know I need to
finish that letter.

I don't want to be held
back anymore by this.

Whoever Matthew Kopple
was I believe is to this day

a part of Taylor.

But I believe it's a part of
Taylor that needs to be let go.

What I would like to do is
show them both to Taylor

to see if it sparks any memory.

Matthew Kopples.

memories that were triggered

from all of the stuff
that's happened today

will help her to close
it and be done with it

and help her write the letter.

And I think that the
letter is the key.

I feel so much closer
to who I was in my past life

now, and know that I need
to write that letter.

It's going to be sort
of a farewell note

so that I'll be able to
move on with my own life.

She knows that
it was to his wife.

And she thinks that it was
some kind of goodbye letter.

It was almost a desperate
act of this man trying

to get a final letter
to his loved ones.

I do hope that
writing down and finishing

and releasing everything is
going to bring me some closure

and I'll finally be at peace.

We have enough facts to
know that this occurrence did

happen.

It was a world war, after all.

little boy in World War II.

His name was Raymond Steed.

And he also lied about
his age to get in.

He was 14 when he died as well.

I haven't told Shane what
I found during my research.

My name is Shane.

And when I see
things in my memory,

it's triggered by something.

But I don't know how.

They come for a couple of
days and then they're gone.

I've actually felt being
shot during the night.

I woke up because I felt
something hit my chest really,

really hard.

I felt a pain for
about five seconds.

And then it just went away.

I can't imagine being
the mother of that child back

then and to lose my child
that way at such a young age.

Must be horrible.

I like the military
because you can fight

for your country and you can
help other people instead

of being afraid.

I don't have
anything against my son joining

the military.

But I want you to join
it because of Shane.

It would be cool to find out
who I was and compare myself

with my past and my present.

I'm going to show
Shane two images of soldiers

that died at the age of
14 during World War II,

to see if it stirs any emotion.

What if one of the
pictures is who he was?

He's never seen them.

I've never shown them to him.

So we'll see how
he reacts to that.

And we'll take it from there
and help him find closure.

If I had the chance to
know who I might have been,

I would like to know.

My son Shane
believes that he was in a war

when he was 14 and he was shot.

I'm a little worried that
history might repeat itself.

I'm still concerned about Shane
wanting to join the military

to finish the war that
wasn't finished for him.

It concerns me.

I want him to live
his life and not

finish someone else's business.

If Shane decides to join the
military when he grows up,

I'm going to be with him all the
way as long as it's his choice.

some closure on this and just
put it behind and be Shane

to get closure for him.

So these two boys, they
both passed away at age 14.
