That's cool.

I had him nailed three times this year.

Surveillance statements from my girls, he was pimping.

I had him cold.

We get to court, suddenly there's all kinds of delays, technicalities, lost

paperwork.

And he walks.

He's got someone in his pocket.

Been pushing the envelope lately. Thanks for coming along.

Ah, forget it.

I know begging Coombs is personal.

I heard what he tried to do to your sister.

He doesn't walk this time.

Talk about having someone in your back pocket.

Thomas Bartell.

District judge.

I'll be damned. So will he.

Peter? Peter!

Wait for backup!

Excellent taste.

As always.

I guess I owe you one.

No, we're even.

Maybe you owe yourself something.

Like what?

Like a vacation.

The grandson of Kwai Chang Kane walks out of the past.

But I want to fight.

So did your great -grandfather when he was your age.

He teaches his son wisdom at a Shaolin temple.

An evil force destroyed that temple. Father and son each believed the other

perished. Fifteen years later, they were reunited.

Now Cain faced new challenges.

And his son grew up.

Look, I'm not my father. I don't do kung fu. I'm a cop. That's who I am. That's

what I do.

I am king.

I will help you.

Okay.

Let's go.

I'm ready.

I'm ready.

I do not think so. You are not ready.

Like the tree in the forest, you must keep your roots

deep in the ground.

But at the same time, you can bend with the wind.

I'm coming at you.

You ready?

Okay, I'm not going to tell you when it's going to happen. It could happen

time. Oh,

man.

You...

stressed out.

Why do you say that?

It fills the room.

You know, I have been thinking of

taking a few days

off.

Are you talking to Blaisdell?

Because it just so happens I've booked a week off.

Well, then we have a happy coincidence.

All right.

There's a place called Three Mountain Lake, about 200 miles north of here.

Blaisdell used to take me fishing there a long time ago.

I've always wanted to go back. What do you think?

Fishing.

Sure be glad to see the tail end of Silbert here.

Your boys were circling the station all night long, just like a pack of wolves.

Boys will be boys, Charlie.

You're still in Silbert country.

Really? Gee, I thought this was the United States of America.

Your boys aren't going to do you much good where you're going.

We'll send a truck by tomorrow for the confiscated evidence. Hey, I figured I

was set up for good with my booze and smoke.

Private ride, Silbert.

Enjoy.

They ignored me yesterday. They're doing it again today.

Was it something I said?

Do not be so impatient.

Impatient? I'm starving.

Oh.

I'd shoot one if you hadn't made me leave my gun at home.

Care for one of these?

No, thanks. I'm not that hungry.

Josh, where the hell are we?

Am I experiencing deja vu, or have we seen this tree before, Josh?

You want to lead.

If not, then just... Sorry, Juana.

What's the matter, Cindy? Break a nail?

This is not fun for anyone, Gary.

Josh is doing the best that he can.

Or have you given up? Hey, come on, guys. Let's just hold it together now,

Keep going. Have a little faith.

I'm freezing.

Then keep moving.

Come on.

Hey, aren't we supposed to be talking about beer and women and baseball, fast

cars?

For what reason?

This is very traditional.

Ah.

Well, then let us talk about women.

You serious?

Female baseball players.

Female baseball players.

Who drive sports cars and drink beer.

How long before we hit the highway? Half an hour?

We'll be okay.

So this is Silbert country, huh?

You're going down for a long time, Silbert. I'm nailed for a truckload of

illicit booze. Now what's that, three to five?

I'm paroled in two.

An ATF officer who was a good friend of mine got hurt bad in that raid.

Clumsy.

Almost done, Wayne.

So what's the scoop?

Well, Joey's hooked up. Well, I got Danny on lookout.

So what do you say?

Well, let's do it.

Joey, hurry up.

I can't believe this. I just get a fishing.

Pop, what are you doing?

You are a fine fish.

Return. Wait a second!

Dad, what are you doing?

That was our... That was our breakfast.

That was my breakfast. I can't believe this.

Hello!

Oh, good. Strangers to share the moment.

No, they are too late.

That was our...

Boy, are we glad we found you.

You folks look like you've been on the trail a while. On the trail?

I'd say more like off the trail.

We seem to have, uh... Not that it's entirely my fault.

Actually, we're lost.

You don't have compasses or maps?

The designer hiking pouch they were in fell into the river yesterday.

I see.

Well, uh... It's about a day and a half to anything that resembles civilization.

Well, you have to take us there.

Please. We don't have any supplies. We haven't a clue how we're ever going to

get out of here.

There is a hunter's shack not far from here where we can find shelter.

Here it comes.

Daddy spotted the bus.

It didn't blow!

Come on,

we got you

Are we going to get anywhere anytime soon?

If I don't get to a shelter fast, I'm going to die.

Anticipating the end of the journey.

It holds its length.

It was supposed to be fun.

We wanted to recreate this trek that we did in high school.

Come to think of it, it wasn't that great the first time, really.

Yeah, well, memory has a way of playing tricks like that.

You think you know people.

Well, the real stuff comes out when the going gets tough.

messes with the Silvers. I told you to let it be.

To carry your brothers.

I'd do my time and come back to you. We've got you back now.

By killing those men in cold blood? I didn't plan that.

We'll warrant some murder now, Wayne.

That's your way of helping me and your brothers?

Of leading this family?

Somebody has to. If it's not going to be you, then it's up to me. There's people

coming.

It's here.

Beds?

No. The guy wearing the floppy hat looks like a guy.

You can't take any chances.

Hey! Hey!

Back it up! Hey! Back off!

Back off!

You shouldn't be doing that to Bobby.

What, do you want them to start firing as soon as they're in range? That's what

you do, isn't it?

Look, they're just a bunch of damn hikers.

And that's what we are when they get here. Nice, friendly outdoorsmen.

We're squatters, right? How will he explain our little gun collection?

Right, then we're hunters.

Now, will you let me handle this?

Why not?

You've handled everything so well up to now.

Bravo.

Are you folks lost?

Yeah, lost and cold and miserable.

Well, you ought to give these people their money back.

You're the guy, aren't you?

I am Kane.

He's a cop.

I saw him in the bait shop at Larkin Falls.

I'm sorry, there's no room in the inn just now.

Where else are we supposed to go?

Josh, say something to him. We've walked for miles.

He can't just turn us away.

Is that right?

So, you guys from around here?

We'd sure like to know the best fishing spots.

We don't live far. No, we're not from around here.

As a matter of fact, we'd appreciate being left alone right now.

No offense intended.

I think it would be best if you do as they ask.

And leave.

I will, uh... I will be along later.

Wait for me.

What the hell was that all about?

Come on. Who were they?

Did you feel the atmosphere in there?

It gave me the creeps, I tell you. We're just hunters, I can tell you that.

Why'd you bother to stay behind?

You are injured.

It's nothing.

If it was you, I'd best do what he says.

No.

You need help. He's fine.

It was pretty bad.

It was just a little hunting accident, that's all.

You best be doing what he says.

The bleeding has not stopped.

Unlike hell, it hasn't. I tried to tie it off the best I could, Dad. I didn't.

know, sir. I know.

It's okay.

Whatever you can do to help, sir.

What is that stuff?

Hey, what are you doing? You all right,

Pa?

This will only hold for a short time.

Are we just going to let them go?

Listen, everybody.

I think we got a problem.

Somebody in there made me.

I'm a cop.

I think it's best that you know that.

We got to get some help.

Are they going to come after us?

I am certain of it.

We must move quickly.

Please, follow me.

I'm telling you, Wayne, I saw him flash a badge when he was buying his fishing

license two days ago. He is a cop.

Bobby told you.

They were right here. We had them and you just sat there. I knew what you

have done. I wasn't prepared for the boys to see it.

You've taught me all my life.

Take care of the family. Take care of business. Protect your own first.

Not at the cost of others' lives.

Others' lives.

Wayne, what's happened to you?

Nothing's happened to me.

This family has to stay together and somebody has to make sure that it does.

Get the gun.

You stay here.

Right.

Until I'm dead.

Until I'm in this family.

Looks like they're headed for Corcoran's Gorge.

Cornered in there.

We'd pick them off like bottles on a fence.

Come on, Cindy.

Move it.

I'm doing the best that I can, Josh.

There they are.

Just like you said.

Don't break the chain.

Wayne,

figure

we hit anyone?

Well, let's find out, huh? All right.

Let's go.

Let's go, campers.

Come on.

There's no way out. We're going to have to go back.

We cannot.

They are approaching quickly.

I should have fallen when I had the chance.

I need some rope.

Hell, I got rope.

Think I'd go camping with Josh and not spend my last dime on state -of -the

gear? Ha!

Even if we rappel over the edge, there's no place to tie it.

Have you forgotten your lesson so quickly?

In the dark, all the forces of the earth may pull at you, but you will remain at

rest. But this is the tug of war.

How can you win if you don't try?

In war, as in life, there is a wrong way and a right way to compete.

Avoid anger and fear.

Embrace concentration and awareness.

And when...

It becomes inevitable.

Let go.

I

used to

climb, but... You gotta be kidding.

Okay.

Okay, who's first?

You have done this before.

Stay at the bottom and insist. Deal.

Okay.

They're just up the way, boys.

Now this ought to be fun.

I'd like to have some time alone with the pretty one.

Well, you can have anything you want, Joey.

Okay!

Climb down!

Come on.

You'll be okay.

What about you, Pop?

I will be fine.

Go.

Now.

I'm not looking down. Good idea.

Joey, hurry up!

I don't believe it.

Way to go.

Amazing. You have got to teach me how to do that, Pop.

Where'd they go?

Did you see that?

What the hell, man? He's got to be history. He just flew right over the

And we still got him trapped.

Okay, now they have to be headed for Larkin's Falls.

Come on, let's go.

Oh, this is great.

Come on.

Let's go.

Dad, they're headed for Larkin's Falls. You guys take the west, we'll take the

east. Do what you have to do.

Come on.

Leave me alone.

They are close.

Come.

You all right? I'm okay.

Dad.

That man probably saved your life.

Doesn't seem right what we gotta do.

I

must

go.

Prepare what defenses you can. I will return.

Hey, what?

Return? Where are you going?

What's he doing? I don't know.

You think Dan and Danny are in the E3 by now?

Yeah. Then we got him trapped.

What's that?

You better have a look.

Be careful now.

You hear me? Be careful.

Danny. Danny!

My

son.

Where's my son?

He is unharmed.

Why are you doing this?

I don't even know anymore, mister.

Survival, maybe.

Just keeping me and my boys alive.

Alive, yes.

But do they have hope?

Hope?

Our families have hope.

What do you know about my family?

You are a father.

And I am.

Our children are our future.

Some of your sons, their future is set, but not the youngest.

That's Danny.

Yes.

Come with me before it is too late.

Yes, sir.

Why are we building a pit? No matter the question.

Come on, Cindy, hurry.

I'm just so scared.

All I can think about is getting shot.

I saw it happen up close.

The guy was just lying there in the street.

Oh, he was in so much pain, and there was blood everywhere.

Oh, God.

I'm sorry for being such a wimp.

It's a heck of a time to start bonding.

Yeah.

I'm not much of a knot expert, but this should hold it.

You sure this will work?

Nope.

Just what I want to hear.

You got one of them.

right over the pit carrying that guy.

I get it. He's a hostage.

No.

He's the bait. We're going fishing.

To your place.

Hey, there's Dad.

Those bastards killed him. Where's Danny?

Bobby, take it easy. Be careful.

No, no, he's moving. He's moving. Be careful.

Dad? You all right, Dad?

Right, Bobby.

Stop him from listening to me.

Okay, let's move on while we can.

No.

We must wait.

It's over.

Give it up. It's hopeless.

We came to do a job.

You'll only make things worse, Wayne.

It can't be any worse than what you've already made it.

I really have lost you, haven't I?

You say you're doing this for the family.

You don't care a whit about this family.

Everything that's done is done for you and you alone.

You're a traitor to the Silver Man.

Wait!

Wait!

Hey there.

You looking for me?

Wayne, I couldn't let you kill anymore, boy.

Wayne, I told you.

I told him.

I'm sorry.

Come on, Danny!

Take her with us!

Danny!

Danny! I saw what happened. I'm not going to let them take you in.

Get the damn knife now.

But don't get her!

They already have, Danny.

If not these folks today, the feds a week from now, a month, but they'll get

Come on, Daddy, I'm helping. Let me help.

No, Daddy.

I'll kill her, I swear it.

Or what gain?

Only you have something to offer to your family now.

Hope for your father.

Hope for yourself.

Everything you have done has shown your love for him.

Do not let that go now.

Do not destroy him.

I'm sorry daddy.

I sense a certain peace.

Like a tree firmly rooted yet moving with the wind.

A concept I will attempt to comprehend.

We were just in the neighborhood and were wondering if you guys felt like

out for some Thai food.

Well, that sounds good to me if it's all right with Mel.

Sounds good to me.

You son of a gun.

You too?

My hero.

Anyway, we, um...

We got these things for you two.

We didn't have time to wrap them and didn't know which one to give to who.

So, here.

Well, my fishing days are over, but... Hey, that probably looked pretty good in

your hat, Pop.

Good luck.

Uh, thank you for the treat.

So, do you want to join us?

No, I think not. Perhaps another time.

All right.

Let's go then.

See you, Pop.
