Here, I got something.

I got something. That blue truck.

Forget it, forget it. It went past.

You're a little jumpy, Marvin.

Yeah, well, I get that way on stakeouts.

It's called anticipatory anxiety.

What?

Yeah.

That's what it's called.

Come on.

Yeah, it's the truth. It's in all the books. Look it up.

You know who else gets it?

Um, no idea.

Fisherman. Get out of here.

I'm serious.

They sit there all day, looking at a barber.

Waiting.

Anticipatory anxiety.

Makes them crazy.

It's you that makes me crazy, and it's Jacob.

What? Listen.

Don't start this.

I don't hear anything.

Pete, what?

What the?

Dad, what are you doing? How did you find me here?

You must come with me.

What is it?

It's important.

I'm on duty. I'm on a stakeout here. Can this wait?

We cannot wait. You must come now.

Marvin, look, I called Colleen to get her to cover me.

Dad, you gonna tell me what this is all about?

They followed you.

They were not following me. They were following you.

Dad, what is going on here? What's happening?

We have no time to discuss it.

Come with me now.

The grandson of Kwai Chang Kane walks out of the past.

Well, I want to fight.

So did your great -grandfather when he was your age.

He teaches his son wisdom at a Shaolin temple.

An evil force destroyed that temple. Father and son each believed the other

perished. Fifteen years later, they were reunited. Now Kane faced new

challenges.

And his son grew up.

Look, I'm not my father. I don't do kung fu. I'm a cop. That's who I am. That's

what I do.

I am king.

I will help.

I would like some conversation.

When you get as old as I am, visitors are rare and always welcome.

Do not deny me.

You know why I am here.

Why I have come to this city.

I don't know. Tell me.

As I was wandering, I heard rumors of

a child, a boy, born under the

sign of the tiger in the hour of the fire.

The whispers

So why is this point so important to you?

You weren't searching for me.

No.

I am here.

So what will you do with him?

The decision is not up to me.

Then whom?

The council.

What council?

What is he talking about?

It does not concern you, Peter. It does concern him as much as it

concerns me.

Your participation will be...

Heath will not even consider it.

If the decision is not yours to make, take us to those

whose decision it is to make.

Oh,

I know these guys. It's David Chow. Big uptown lawyer, that guy.

Dr. Kwam, GP, lives around the corner from your place. I know these guys. The

other guy... For 70 years, since the revolution, this council,

in many guises, has nurtured and protected

the imperial line.

Many have stepped forward to offer what they could

to assist us.

Today, Kwai Chang Cain has stepped forward and we have

considered his request.

Kwai Chang Cain, your offer has been

rejected.

Why? Are my skills considered not useful to you?

It is you.

You are unworthy.

Okay, we're going to war here.

I don't even know what the hell's going on here, but whatever it is, nobody's

going to call my father unworthy.

Peter, it is not the man.

Who is unworthy?

It is the lion.

The lion?

There is a great shame, a curse upon our family.

Your grandfather?

Yes.

Your great -grandfather was orphaned as a young boy in China.

He sought refuge in a Shaolin temple.

Though not of pure Chinese blood, Kwai Chang showed great reverence for the

temple, and Master Khan allowed him to study there.

Master Po, a man of great insight and gentleness, befriended the boy, whom he

called Grasshopper.

Master Po saw in Kwai Chang great potential, not just as a skilled

as a gifted spirit, capable of rapid ascension to enlightenment.

And priesthood.

But one day, the emperor's nephew, an arrogant and evil young man, shot down

Master Poe, murdered him without problem.

Your great -grandfather could not accept his death.

He avenged Master Poe's death.

He killed the emperor's nephew.

And then, he fled to America.

And that is how the shame And the curse came upon the Lion of Cain.

I have always wished to erase that guilt.

And if I cannot, then you must.

Wait a second, Pop. Haven't you ever heard of a father's sins not being

on the son? To be associated with you, no matter how slight that association.

will only bring doubt and dishonor.

But if you, here assembled, cannot allow old debts to be repaid, what hope

is there for the future?

You are sworn to protect.

Without absolution, what chance is there for any of us?

You expect the child to be honored.

Deny me my chance to regain my honor and the honor of my child.

You will serve as a protector to Pujaya?

Yes. To their death?

Yes.

It is agreed.

And what of my son?

He is a young...

Luo Yan, an outsider.

He's a man of the gun.

He will put it aside.

Without his gun, he's unskilled and would be a hindrance.

Do not force me to do this, quite young Cain.

He is your son, and I also love him.

He has the right to prove himself, oh Jaya.

This will not be a test.

It will be an execution.

That is a chance we must take.

Oui.

What are you doing?

Another dragon's wing?

Those marauders out side by side?

We're on the same team, buddy.

Well, that was worth a try.

Pop, I just got a chance.

You have one chance.

Use it correctly, and it will be enough.

Remember the unexpected.

How can I succeed against them?

Connor's too skillful.

Too powerful.

I'm going to be defeated.

Perhaps.

What should I do?

How can I win?

certain expectations.

Yeah, I'm gonna knock my head off.

We do have expectations.

Yeah, he's gonna knock my head off.

Exactly.

He expects you to fall into a defensive shell to

back away from his attack.

To do what is expected.

The perfect ingredient.

Yeah,

I'm coming.

Be right with you.

Dad, this is not my turf.

I'm not good at this.

This is disgusting.

He's a coward.

So this is all about the guy that lives here?

Yes.

Who is he? Who could be worth all this?

He is the heir.

The heir to what?

The heir to the Chinese throne.

He is the next emperor of China.

Look at this place.

In case nobody told you, the communists phased out the emperor's job.

Since that time, some of us in the community have safeguarded the

members of the royal family here, donating all they could to provide what

needed, preparing for the day when the regime in China will fall.

We believe now is the time.

When the government falls, there will be We need a figure

to pull everything together.

The emperor?

Yes.

It's strange. You pass by this place on the street.

You'd never know all this was in here.

It is Rebecca, an apartment in a forbidden city.

He lives in a traditional way.

The next few days...

It will be very dangerous for him.

There are those who wish his head.

Two days?

Yes.

Well, that's not so bad.

I will leave you here.

Wait, wait, wait a second. Where are you going to go?

You should stay here.

There are people I must find.

Pop, no. I find people.

It is better.

This is Emperor.

He has been with him.

Best teacher.

He has learned science from a neurosurgeon, math from a nuclear

We keep as much emphasis to his physical development as we do to him

intellectually.

Come, I will introduce you.

Remember, for whom you are speaking, you are in the presence of the heir to the

throne of China.

You blocked all my hits.

Don't block them!

Looks like a little brat to me.

Xinling, this is Peter Kane.

Who?

Peter Kane.

He's here to protect you.

Doesn't seem like much of a protector to me.

Cute kid.

Hey,

pal.

You know, it's easy to play rough when no one's allowed to hit back.

Someone should have taught this kid not to throw cheap shots.

What does that mean?

That means what you just did to me.

That was a cheap shot.

You know, it might work for you in here, but it's not going to work out in the

streets.

I've never been out there.

The A has never been out of this apartment, just as his ancestor never

The Forbidden City.

You've never been outside?

What about friends? What about kids his own age?

For obvious reason, that has not been possible.

What did you say I did?

Cheap shot?

Yeah.

Come on.

Give you another chance.

Oops.

I'm here to protect you, not to kick your butt.

Though from what I've seen, you could use a good butt kicking.

You don't approve of me?

No, I don't.

Leave!

You know, for all the lessons that this kid has been taught, you'd think

somebody might have taught him some manners.

You stay.

Please.

You know, you are the first person who I've met who is not Chinese.

I'm part Chinese.

I'm a fourth.

But you are not like the others who come here.

Probably not.

You're very different.

Probably so.

What do you do out there?

I'm a cop out there.

A policeman.

I see.

Yeah, what do you see?

I now know why you are here.

I know more than they think I do.

Yeah, I'm sure you do.

No, I do.

Come. I'll show you.

You know, almost no one is allowed in here.

I'm honored.

I guess.

What I'm about to show you is a secret.

You can't tell anyone.

Okay.

Promise?

Hey, you don't trust me, though. Show me.

No. I trust you.

I made it myself.

It's a radio.

The plans were in one of the books they had me read.

That's strange.

They teach me all about the world outside.

But I'm never allowed to leave.

Mostly it's music.

It is too fresh.

Did I say that right?

Peter will make an effective Ujaya.

Yes.

Keep them busy while we search.

There will be at least two separate groups of assassins.

Yes. One group will be Asian. The other will not

be. The Chinese assassins will be...

The Lucheng assassins are relentless.

They embrace death.

And fear only failure.

And they search for an animal in the woods.

What do you look for?

Where they forage.

Exactly. I want to show you something else.

Come on, it's through here.

I found this space in the wall a long time ago.

Nobody knows about it but me.

And now you.

Come on.

Hurry, they're getting out. Who is? The school kids.

This window was painted over, but I scraped a hole in it so I could see.

Take a look.

There's a school somewhere down there that gets out this time of day.

I love to come here and watch.

See, you said I didn't have any friends.

These are my friends.

I know their names.

Well, maybe not their real names, but the names that I have given them.

I've watched them grow up.

I've seen them have fights, make friends, break up.

I've seen them sad and happy.

from this window?

Yes.

I come here whenever I can.

That's why I have to be so rude to everyone so they will be afraid to come

my room.

When I tell them not to bother me... They don't bother you.

No, they don't.

It disturbs me to be that way sometimes, but...

The ceremony's going to be soon.

The Ascension or whatever it's called.

Maybe they'll let you out there and you can meet some of your friends and you

can find out their real names.

No.

Once I am elevated, not even this will be allowed.

That's too bad.

I need to do a full search of the house.

Top to bottom. I need to know every entrance and every exit.

What's down there?

A root cellar.

I'm sure the ancient knows what he's doing, but this place has more ways in

out than a train station.

Kind of breaks your heart, doesn't it?

What?

It's been late.

I don't understand.

Being cooped up in a place like this, it's just a kid.

It's like being in a prison.

He's the heir, which justifies everything.

Yeah.

Get laying.

If you're looking for a 17 -year -old, this is the place.

The mall.

Hey.

Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.

Hello. Hey, we gotta get back.

I know.

I had to see it just once.

To walk around.

Yeah, well.

Personally, I don't know what you were waiting for.

Well,

when I found out the ceremony was only two days away, I figured this was my

chance.

Well, you had a lot of people worried about you.

I know.

We can go back now.

It is what they call an irresistible impulse.

Yeah. Well, I've had a few of those myself.

Wow.

Look at this.

What, do you like this?

Well, let's see if we've got any room left in this.

Come on.

Okay. I can't believe this. This is your first piece of pizza.

Okay. Begin.

What do you think?

They are great.

They meant the pizza.

Oh.

It's not what I expected. I thought it would be sweet.

You want to meet them?

No.

No.

Hey, girls.

Girls? Excuse me.

Hi. My friend and I are doing a survey on, uh...

On pizza.

No wonder I never get a date.

Anyway, we thought we'd like to ask you a few questions. Do you mind?

I don't know.

What do you think?

Yes.

So much for shining.

That's a great jacket.

It's really cool.

My name's Tiffy Abbott. This is Jean.

Hi. Hello. I love your jacket.

I am Finn.

Sunny. Hi, Finn. Hi, Sunny.

Hi.

It's really nice. Where'd you get it?

Thor. I'm Peter.

I like it a lot.

So did you come here often? Never mind.

Um... No.

No?

Man, was I ever really that young?

I have found what we need.

Me too.

Mr. Wong sold his entire stock of coli ginseng.

Then we do not have much time.

I don't get out too much, no.

No? No. Oh.

We should go now. Yeah, it's getting late.

You have to leave?

Yeah, but we'll be here tomorrow.

If you're here, um, I mean, if you're going to be here, maybe we could meet or

something.

I don't think I can.

Maybe the day after?

Actually, the day after he becomes the emperor of China.

All right.

Um, well, it was nice to meet you.

See you later. Bye.

Pretty smooth.

Sunny.

Okay,

let's go this way.

We got a bull.

What?

Bull. What? Run, run, run, run, run, run!

Okay, I'm gonna handle it. If you get back in the corner, we'll get their

attention. You get away and get back to the house, alright?

You got me? Yeah.

What are you doing?

I'm leaving.

This is the only way out.

These guys are gonna hit you back.

Only if I allow it.

We're not going straight back to the house. Great.

No, no, not great. Don't be enthusiastic about this. We're going to go back and

see the ancient and my father and find out what they want. Let's go.

Gerald, what the hell happened here?

At this point, somehow, that doesn't surprise me.

Is my father here?

No.

Okay, thanks.

Wait.

I mean, he'll probably be right back.

You can stay.

No, we, uh, we gotta go find him. Thanks.

What? No.

What are you doing?

You took him from that sacred place.

It's over.

Everything.

What have you done?

You must return to the house. No, the house is being watched. They followed

Those men were after me.

After him.

And they weren't Asian.

They were from the Western world.

Hired killers.

Have no nationality.

In any case, you dealt with the first crude attack. The real killers have yet

strike.

We have located your assassins, my prince.

Now, say the rest.

Say the rest, Pop. You're going to try to take them out.

Now, how do you know where they're going to be?

Chinese takeout.

The best assassins are the Lo Chang.

They were smuggled into the country, and they have been here for several days,

training and acclimating.

It seems Western food does not agree with their systems.

The warriors of Lo Chang are addicted to very spicy food.

Too much even for me.

Very few places prepare it. You two checked out.

Chinese restaurants for very large orders of spicy takeout.

And the herb shops for men ordering a large amount of coli,

ginseng.

And this detective work obviously paid off for you.

Yeah.

Like the Hardy Boys.

The Hardy Boys.

Detective... Never mind.

Okay.

You stay here.

Okay, um...

I'm going to go with them.

They're going to need my help.

No, I am going too.

That is not possible.

I am expected to be a symbol for a country.

To be one all revere.

To be honored.

To be treated as the one closest to God.

If I allow you to fight my battles, how can I consider myself worthy?

Or anyone else?

This is something I must do.

And I will not allow you to interfere.

You ready for a little search and destroy?

Absolutely.

Don't worry.

Whoa, okay. There's two of them.

I'm not big on heights Go

that way

Oh

that position

I am sorry.

I did not mean to fuck you.

When a mongoose is young, the cobra is his toy.

When he's old, he should not play with cobras.

Keep your

head

on the floor.

How?

You hear him?

Dad.

Dad, what are you doing?

Preparing.

For what?

You're fine with...

We took out the assassins. We cleared our family name.

The ceremony's tomorrow. It's over.

It is not over.

It is not yet.

Be gone.

Hey, watch it. Watch it, Pete.

What are you doing?

Building in. What does it look like?
