Original subtitles

I feel this will be your lucky night, Mr. Sung.

Deal the tiles.

Am I at too much?

$100 ,000.

I call for the death, Kyle.

You throw that challenge in my face?

You, you fool.

There's no toy.

It's a puny wager.

You refuse?

No. I accept.

For them.

The death pile.

One play.

Quartile.

Winner takes all.

Loser forfeits his life.

Excuse me. Have you seen my grandfather, Mr. Sun?

Excuse me.

Have you seen him?

No.

Thank you.

I beg

you. For

every wager. From the time of reckoning.

Why Chang Kain walks out of the past.

But I want to fight.

So did your great -grandfather when he was your age.

He teaches his son wisdom at a Shaolin temple.

An evil force destroyed that temple. Father and son each believed the other

perished. Fifteen years later, they were reunited.

Now Kain faced new challenges.

And his son grew up.

Look, I'm not my father. I don't do kung fu. I'm a cop. That's who I am. That's

what I do.

I am King.

I will help you.

Right here.

The officer will take you home with some rest.

We'll be in touch tomorrow.

That's a hell of a way to find your grandfather.

Yeah, it's unbelievable.

You know, that's three in the past eight months.

It took him a long time to die.

Yeah, somebody enjoyed watching.

Officer, what time was the body found?

What are you doing here, Bob?

I know this man.

May I uncover the body?

Uh, uh, please.

It's not pretty.

Captain, call for you.

All right.

Yeah. Do you want me to talk to the DA about this? No, I will.

Yep.

I told you it wasn't pretty.

You see something?

Wait for us.

I have to perform the proper ceremony.

You will be abandoned.

You may remove the body now.

Why the ceremony?

The blood?

Certain kinds of death, right with the spirit, delay its passage.

The cuts, the way he was killed, you know what it means?

Yes.

Sometimes the manner of death has equal significance to the death itself.

The method of death, those cuts, it's a message, isn't it?

Wait. Did you get any of that? What the hell did he say?

I don't know.

But I got a feeling we're gonna find a lot more bodies looking like that.

I just hope he doesn't try to interfere.

Interfere, Willie?

He'll pretty much do what he feels is required.

I gotta go.

Mrs. Sung, I know this is difficult, but we're flying blind here. I need your

help.

Please, Mrs. Sung, talk to me.

Help me find your husband's murderer.

It's not a language problem.

Then what is it?

We need to talk.

Yeah?

So far, I don't know anything more about your grandfather than I did when I got

here. I mean, somebody has got to say something to me.

I've told you everything I know.

I flew here because I was worried.

I knew that he was in some kind of trouble.

But how did you know?

What kind of trouble? Did he say something?

He hinted in his letters that there was danger and that he feared for his life.

But that brought you running.

Detective, my grandfather and I were very close.

He was like a second father.

I want to find the people that killed your grandfather.

But I feel like your family's just shutting me out.

They're not telling me what they know.

Yeah, you're probably right.

It's the Chinese way.

We don't trust very easily.

How can I help you?

I want to know what you saw in that alley.

I saw what you saw.

All right.

But it meant more to you.

Don't hold out on me.

This is important.

What was so special?

About the dead man?

About those cuts?

Tell me what you saw.

Do you remember the lesson about

How do you see?

By the movement of the air.

First, there is the stillness.

Then at the first moment, you feel displacement in the air.

You strike out.

I want to do it.

And so you shall.

I will touch.

You will see.

Close your eyes.

We will both work in the dark.

Remember, you must not hesitate.

The first moment you feel the displacement of the air, you must strike

Tell me when you feel the stillness.

I'm ready.

I said, ready.

Can you see me?

In the stillness, I can see all things.

The flight of a bird.

The opening of an eye.

I was cheating.

Why would you compromise your honor for such a small thing?

I wanted to do it right.

A man who has no skills can be taught.

A man who has no honor has nothing.

You must guard your honor, Peter.

It is the most precious possession you will ever have.

It is the one thing that cannot be taken away from you.

I'm sorry.

No need to be sorry.

We are both now valuable as.

It is called the death of a thousand cups.

An execution which dishonors the vessel of the body as no other can.

The Chinese used to punish their most hated criminals in that way.

But it has been outlawed for many years.

It is no longer practiced.

There have been three of these deaths in the past eight months.

One death could have many reasons.

For many deaths, there can only be one reason.

That is?

There is a practitioner somewhere in Chinatown.

An evil now here that was not here before.

One amongst us who glorifies death.

The killings will continue.

Yes.

Triads. No.

This is one man.

The victims were all Chinese.

Too young.

His son was old.

Different professions didn't know each other. There's no common thread.

The killer.

How did he know them?

Choose them.

If you hear anything, anything at all, tell me.

It says to stop.

Yes.

It must stop.

Yeah? Hi, it's Jennifer Sung.

Jennifer. Listen, I have to see you as soon as possible.

Um, we need to talk. Can you meet me at the Port Street Marina?

Yeah, all right, all right.

And, Detective, please hurry.

I'm scared.

Okay.

So what's with the boat?

It was my grandfather's. He had a great hiding place.

Yeah, what was he hiding from?

Usually my grandmother.

So what have you found out?

If my grandfather kept any secrets, I thought they'd be here. And I was right.

I found these in the cabin.

Journals, business deals.

And when I was going through them, I found this.

Okay, and... And this.

What do you think? What does it mean?

I don't know, but somehow this is connected to these.

My God, that's them. That's the same car that was following me. I thought I lost

them.

Come on, we got to get out of here right now.

Come on, come on.

Oh.

Leave them. No, they were here.

Let's go.

Go for the cart!

the hell do they want with me?

I know you're nosing around.

You'll be safe here.

What about my family? Are they in danger?

They'll be fine.

I'll put a watch in the house right away.

I have to go out for a while, but I'll be back.

Just bolt the door behind me.

Don't answer the door or the phone unless you know for sure it's me.

This is tough, but you'll be fine. I'm not going to let anything happen to you.

Thank you, Detective.

It's Peter.

I mean, if you're going to hole up in my apartment, I figure we should be on a

first -name basis, right?

Plus, of course, that's moving too fast for you.

No.

I can handle Peter.

I need some flash money. Why?

Sung's death was connected to Pai Gao, a Chinese gambling game.

He lost big and couldn't pay?

Well, there's more to it than that.

I won't know unless I get myself a game.

How much flash money will you need?

A lot.

Will you tell me why we're calling this gambling money flash money?

Because I intend to win.

We all intend to win, kid.

Let's get the big ball rolling here, huh?

What do we got here?

You got a game going here.

Well, I'm here to meet a buddy.

Valdosta Sam?

Pleasure doing business with you.

Hey, Peter.

We need to talk.

Talk? I'm being ripped to shreds here. I'm surrounded by man -eating sharks.

Whichever one of you boys paid this young fella to put me off my game is a

fiendish devil.

Mark, I'm a fiendish devil. Now, fam, let's get the big ball rolling here,

And may Lady Luck shine her sweet peach -blocking smile on all our doors.

What have I got here?

Well, all I got is a little ten -high straight.

How's that going to ride?

You gentlemen don't know what you're dealing with, do you?

Peter, why don't you put up and sit down or shut up and get out?

See, if I know old Sam here, well... Peter, don't do this.

When Sam lays down a ten high straight, that means that you've got two pair of

probably aces. Peter!

You're holding a low straight.

You, you've got three of a kind.

Probably Jackson.

Now, there's a game in Chinatown.

Very dangerous.

It's a special game.

People are getting killed.

Cut up.

You know about it?

I may have heard a little something.

Yeah, well, I need to know where it is and how I can get in.

Even if I told you you couldn't get in, it's by invitation only. You have to be

a player.

I'm going to be a player, Sam.

See?

I'm going to be you.

And you're going to disappear.

You're right.

Good luck, old buddy.

What do you know about these?

I got time.

I know the game.

Right.

Okay, I want you to teach me.

I gotta learn everything by tonight.

Pai Gao is a very complex game, Peter, with many subtleties.

It takes great skill to master.

Well, like the man says, I'll play any game you can name at any amount you can

count.

Let me demonstrate.

I will prepare the tile, the deal.

I'm all eyes.

Good.

Where the hell did you learn that?

One makes friends with many skills in 15 years of wandering.

You were a professional, right?

The point is the complexity of the game.

As an example, I can read your tiles.

I have already read them without your notice.

No way.

You have a three, a six, a nine, and a five.

You're good.

You can play, Peter.

I cannot sing.

A son so ill -prepared into such danger.

Don't worry about it. I'll improvise.

I'm good at that.

And if I can't dazzle him with my game, I'll baffle him with my bull.

You gonna take this with me?

No. If they find out you have a gun, they'll know you're a cop.

All right.

It's a six.

It's a nine. Damn!

Can't get this.

Because you're pushing it.

Too impatient.

Here.

Close your eyes.

Now, just relax and let me help you.

These are cheater tiles. The bags are marked.

Just draw your fingers lightly over the surface.

Softly.

Like a feather.

There, can you feel it?

Oh, yeah.

Good.

You're not helping.

You don't like it?

What's happening here?

I think I've been cooped up too long in your apartment.

You know, it's amazing.

A guy saves your life and all of a sudden there's a whole new set of

I mean, I always thought you were attractive, but now you're just damn

uncomfortable.

I've taken advantage of the situation.

I know.

No, you don't.

I'm a cop.

And you... I'm what?

You're a person that needs my help. So help me.

Oh, yeah.

Jeffrey, I can't shine this.

Sign it.

I don't want you to.

Take me with you?

I can't.

You better.

You're never getting without me.

No.

You have a Chinese heart, but I have a Chinese face.

We need you.

What's this all about?

I am ready to play.

Quotient sent for me.

Go ahead in.

I'm going to head over there and see if I can make some noise.

I will play... There.

Why don't you hang with me?

I'm going to go over and throw it around, you know, play the big spender.

See if I can get into the real game.

I would not wish to inhibit you.

Stop it.

Sammy, trade perhaps?

Why don't you just stick with me?

Come on, follow my lead.

You are going to see one flamboyant loser.

Howdy, fellas.

Y 'all mind if we join your table?

Sure. Well, Val Delster Sam's the name.

I don't think anything's my game.

That's a rhyme.

Well, well, well. Have a seat, darling.

There you go, honey.

You're a real beautiful girl.

Take it all.

Let's get to know each other.

Big bet coming up.

May Lady Luck shine her peach blossoms on all your doorsteps, fellas.

Thanks. Now, let's just gamble.

Well, easy come, easy go.

I do like a quick game.

Let's try that again.

Double your poison, double your fun.

Yeah!

Well, watch it fly.

You know, this game puts bubbles in my sarsaparilla.

I'm going to have to... Excuse me a second, fellas. I'll be back in just a

smidge. Loaded for bear.

This is a vicious game. I'm completely wiped out.

Don't feel too badly.

We had on for 60 seconds. Oh, come on. At least I was going to croak. I lost

his money.

I mean, I thought I'd just attract some attention here.

Looks like somebody has over at your father's table.

Is this all yours?

Mm, thanks.

Look. Yeah, that's lovely.

Oh, look out. Mama locked the barn.

My daddy always says you're going to be a bear if you're a grizzly.

Really?

I'm sorry, sir, but that exceeds the house limit.

Whoa, partner.

That could choke a hog in wintertime.

I think my friend would like to reconsider.

Back down, bitch. You're gonna break the bank and don't be afraid to lose a

little.

That is my weight.

I'm sorry, sir.

There's a $50 ,000 bet limit.

You have over 100 on the table.

Limit?

I was informed of no limit. I was told this was a place to gamble.

Who makes these rules?

What are you doing? Back down a bit.

I'm sorry, sir. Those are house rules.

Change the rules.

I can't.

You call this a game?

This is church bingo. Child's play.

Take it easy, Pop.

You're going to get us kicked out of here.

I think you should inform your guests.

This is no place for real gambling.

This is kindergarten gambling.

Excuse me.

I couldn't help note your dissatisfaction, Mr...

Kane.

And you.

I run the games.

I am Ko Chen.

Well, I am not particularly impressed with your game.

Too tame.

I have been more stimulated by steamed rice.

Then perhaps maybe I could interest you in a more private

session.

By the game, or by the opponent.

May I bring my good luck charms with me?

Why not?

The table!

For a private match.

I think you're so comfortable, Mr. Kane.

This is very creepy.

Just stay with me. Don't leave my side.

Don't worry.

We can kill him here, or we can take him outside.

Patience.

There'll be plenty of time for that.

First...

I want to watch him lose, then die.

I will mix the tiles.

And what would you like to wager, Mr. King?

Everything.

I admire your style.

Then shall we make it a little more interesting?

With this?

The death tile.

Precisely.

You said you wanted... Stimulation.

Are the stakes too high?

Very well.

One plane.

Winner takes all.

One last nick.

You are Dean.

Four tiles.

A prayer.

A cleansing.

Time to turn your titles.

That is not the hand I dealt you.

If you were looking for something.

Clever.

Peter, do you feel a displacement in the air?

Enough!

Kane, prepare to die.

the mountain.

Oh, my God.

Thanks for everything.

Bye.

I wish you could miss your plane.

Well, the magazine had to get out.

It's my job.

Well, what do you think the chances of you flying up some weekend are?

I don't know.

Call me.

I think I can explain it.

I like that girl.

Somehow I sense that.

Perhaps your lady luck will leave her blossoms at your door.

You want a lift?

No.

By the way, Pop, don't ever call me that.

How did you know that I'd remember the lesson?

To kick out on cue.

I didn't.

But he had a gun.

I didn't see him. We could have been killed.

In trust, as in love, there's always the risk.
