[music playing]
[crying]
Come on mom, don't do that.
I can't help it, my little boy's going away.
[crying]
Hey, be careful with that, that's--
[crunch] Breakable.
Let's hit it, kids, our meter's running.
You promise you'll write?
I'll write, mom.
And you'll call if you need anything?
Except money.
I promise I'll call.
You be careful at that college, son.
Don't let them turn you into a Communist.
They'll never take me alive, Dad.
First time away from home?
Whatever gave you that idea?
[crying]
[MUSIC - EYE EYE, "OUT ON A LIMB"]
Come on, Mother.
Let's go home and get you drunk.
[crying]
We make our plans and fight like little children.
We trip and fall, and stumble in the dark.
Lovers try against what seems a little chance.
And we put back, what we take for ourselves.
Every precious second, I can't wait another second.
You come to me this time, stop your running away.
And catch me this time, for it could be the last time.
Here I am, out on a limb.
Out on a limb.
And look at me now, take a good look at me now.
Here I am, out on a limb, I'm out on limb.
Where's Hayes Hall?
Where's Brown Hall?
(BOTH TALKING) I don't know.
Catch me, catch me this time.
Here I am out on a limb, out on a limb.
Excuse me, could you tell me how to get to Hayes Hall?
[laughs]
With a line like that, you can't be serious.
[car starting]
[mumbling]
I didn't, I didn't s--
are you having engine trouble?
Not anymore.
Oh, good.
Want a ride?
GUIDO: My friend Snookie used to be in show business,
he's dead now.
They told me I could be a stand-up comedian.
But how could I do that?
What if my mother would come into the club
and hear me say dirty words like doodie, and screw off,
turkey, and stuff like that.
I would be humiliated, man.
[phone] Excuse me.
MAN: (ON PHONE) Guido, put that no-good kid of mine
on the phone.
It's your father, Mr. Dean.
Hi, Dad. Look--
MAN: (ON PHONE) Hey, how's Guido treating you?
Yeah, Dad, Dad, Guido and I are getting along just fine,
OK.
Dad, what I need is a favor.
MAN: (ON PHONE) A favor?
After that little escapade last weekend?
Your momma's still in shock.
She don't eat.
How could you do that to her?
She's known those girls since they was babies.
DEAN: Mom is overreacting again, Dad.
We just had a little fun.
MAN: (ON PHONE) Horse shit.
You stained the family honor.
What the hell is the matter with you?
DEAN: Well, I can't marry all three of them, now, can I?
MAN: (ON PHONE) What?
DEAN: Hey, Pop Pop, I'm sorry, OK.
About that favor, look, I'm gonna
need more money this year.
Tuition fees are way up.
MAN: (ON PHONE) What?
[music playing]
[beeping]
[revving]
Ow!
Great.
I'm sorry.
Just great.
Nice to meet you.
[beeping]
[revving]
Where's-- where's room 66?
The men's section.
Follow him.
[singing]
It's a pentagram.
To wards off evil spirits and creeps.
[revving]
Hi, I'm your roommate.
[laughing]
[sighing]
[gasps]
Dean!
Carrie, I knew you'd be happy to see me,
but I wasn't expecting this.
Dean!
So how was your summer without me?
Get lost, will you?
Whatever you say.
You know, I think you're being a bit hasty here, Carrie.
An opportunity like this doesn't come along every day.
I think we should seize it.
Yeah.
[slams door]
Gladys, good to see you!
Fuck off, Dean.
[whirring]
[pinball sounds]
My God.
I'll bet you're my roommate.
I'll bet this is my side of the room.
All right, Dean Roberts.
It's Hi, I'm Andy Co--
Oh, I hope you don't mind, better stereo separation.
Well, this is--
You're flexible, I like that in a roommate.
100 watts per side, digital programming.
It'll melt your brains.
Terrific.
[classical music playing]
Just listen to those strings.
Yeah, that's nice.
That's enough of that crap.
Destruction music, all right!
[rock music playing]
Ha ha!
[pinball sounds]
Hey!
[machine powers down]
I've killed for less.
Listen, we're going to have to lay down a few rules here.
I'm glad you brought that up.
Rule number one.
This means do not disturb.
Hi Dean.
Do you want to look at my portfolio now?
Oh but of course, but of course.
Step into my office.
Andy, great to meet you, guy.
See you around, OK?
You can't--
[music playing]
[interposing voices]
Gladys, Gladys, Gladys.
Oh, hi.
I can't believe it, my roommate decides to throw a party
on the first night back.
Oh, it's you.
I'm Andy Cooper.
Carrie Hanson.
Oh, I was-- it's--
it's just a doodle.
- You in fine arts? - Uh-huh.
I'm in Nicole Hubert's studio.
Oh yeah?
Me too.
Thank you.
So you're Dean's roommate?
Now how did you know that?
Well, everyone knows Dean.
His last roommate preferred that couch.
It's more comfortable.
[creaking]
Thank you.
[chuckling]
[chimes]
[moaning]
[laughing]
There she is.
Who?
Carrie.
Come on.
Ohh.
GLADYS: He's worth it.
What What is that?
He is so cool.
Good morning, ladies.
I'd like you to meet my new roommate, uh,
Andy something or other.
CARRIE: Cooper.
Oh, you two know each other?
Yeah, we slept together.
[grunting]
Let me give you a hand with that.
No, no, I got it.
See?
Oh!
Hm.
[rumbling]
[creaking]
[gasping]
Be careful, Andy!
Ah!
[wood collapsing]
Who is that guy?
What was that?
I see you started without me.
And how did this happen?
It was-- it was gravity, mostly.
But I helped.
[wood falling]
[class laughing]
No matter.
This is not a classroom, what happens
here is your concern, not mine.
For those of you who don't know me, my name is Nicole Hubert.
What we stress here is creativity.
You may do anything you like.
I only ask that you don't destroy the studio.
[crashing]
[laughing]
What a goof.
[bell ringing]
[interposing voices]
Hi, I'm Andy Cooper.
- Droid. - Wha-- what?
Floyd?
Droid.
Droid.
Is that-- is that your real name, Droid?
Names aren't real.
[revving]
- Who is that guy? - He's not sure.
DROID: Hey, watch it, asshole!
I like that in a man.
Say, uh-- hi.
Hello.
Thanks for sticking up for me earlier.
Yeah, well it was partly my fault.
There's a-- there's a cubist show down at the Sign Gallery
on Thursday night, I thought--
She's busy.
No longer lost, I see.
You are?
I'm An--
I'm Andy Cooper, ma'am.
Andy.
I've seen your portfolio, it's very good.
Thank you.
Well, I look forward to seeing more of your work.
Oh, wait 'til you see some of my work.
[laughs]
I've already seen you at work.
Excuse me.
[classical music playing]
It's a piece of shit.
Shh.
It's a piece of shit.
It is not.
Well, look at it.
It looks like a piece of shit.
Keep your voice down.
All right, so what's it called?
A piece of shit.
It's an expression of existence.
Oh, Robert lunch was lovely, as usual.
My pleasure.
Perhaps you're free Saturday night.
Perhaps not.
Mmm, pity.
Uh, excuse me.
Monsieur Cooper.
I would like to introduce to you a very dear friend
of mine, Mr. Robert Bley.
Mm-hmm.
And I believe he has an announcement to make?
Mm?
Oh, yes.
As you may know, my annual showing
of works by local artists begins next month.
Nicole has persuaded me to open the show to her students,
and I graciously agreed.
Unfortunately, Mr. Bley can choose only one of your works
for the show.
Naturally, if it's sold, the proceeds will go to the artist.
Minus my 50% commission, of course.
What is this, a contest?
Lesson number one.
Art is a business.
NICOLE: Any questions?
Uh, yeah.
How much is that thing?
$15,000.
Not bad for a piece of shit.
DEAN: Posed as well as painted, loaded with talent.
ANDY: You're saying that this is our art teacher?
What did I tell you?
This must have been one of Marcel's last major works.
Whatever, dynamite body.
Just dynamite.
ANDY: I was just admiring the color and the composition.
DEAN: Oh, bullshit.
You're looking at her bazoongas, just like I was.
I was not, I was thinking what it would be like to know
an artist like Marcel.
It would be fantastic.
Oh yeah, right.
So what was that about a cubist show?
ANDY: I was wondering if maybe you might like to go?
CARRIE: Oh, I cant, I'm busy.
Are you going to the mixer tonight?
Uh-huh, with Gladys, probably.
Well, then maybe I'll see you there?
Maybe.
[MUSIC - "THIS IS HOW IT'S DONE"]
Hard to be impressed, when you won't take second best.
So if you look at love I've won, this is how it's done.
This is how it's done.
- Ah, smell it? - What?
Hormones, millions of them, all over the place.
ANDY: Say, there's Carrie.
I got dibs.
Screw you.
Does that make me competitor?
I hope so, competition's fun.
Except when you lose.
I don't lose.
So if you look at love I've won, this is how it's done.
This is how it's done.
Good evening, ladies.
I must say, you're looking lovely.
Join you?
Why, thanks, don't mind if we do.
This fucking thing isn't working.
Tell you, there's a couple of strings missing off her racket.
Hi.
You know, you have a nice ass.
Thanks.
What'd you say your name was?
Helen Dobish.
Helen Dobish, Helen Dobish, that is a lovely name.
I hate it.
Me too, stinks up the place.
I'm glad you made it.
So am I.
You know that you are the most ravishing creature
on the face of the earth?
Yes.
This is for you.
It's beautiful.
Well, I had--
I had a subject to work with.
That was sweet of you.
Well, I'm glad you like it.
[scoffing]
[music playing]
Just ignore him.
Dean only hands out pictures of himself.
I mean, if you look at history,
it's obvious that men have been responsible for everything bad.
Have you ever stopped to think that Nam
spelled backwards is man?
That is heavy.
Thanks.
[music - "going, going, gone"]
You know, I'd rip the shirt off my back
for a dance with you.
And then we could work on your shirt.
What have I got to lose?
We'll discuss that later.
Want to dance?
Sure.
Baby, I'm going.
I'm in the lead.
Baby, I'm going.
I'm gonna get myself a ticket, on the first train out of town.
Ride that track, never look back.
You'll never, never see me around.
Baby, I'm going, ooh baby I'm going.
[punching]
Hi, girls.
Good to see you.
Dean, are you all right?
Campus life, God, don't you just love it?
Hey, Helen, wait up!
[laughing]
It's late.
I should be getting back.
Will Gladys be there?
Who knows?
Probably.
I bet that she isn't.
I really need to sleep tonight, Andy.
Would it spoil the friendship if I
were to give you a back rub? - Nice try.
I think we're taking this a little bit too fast.
Huh?
I decided to be the first one to say that.
I do have to go, though.
I have an early class, honest.
[kissing]
Hey, thanks for the painting.
[woman screaming]
HELEN: No, Dean, don't!
Dean!
What the hell are you doing?
DEAN: Go away!
Dean, please come in.
No, you're right, I'm scum.
Dean, don't do it!
Get out of the way, Andy, or I'll land on you.
[gasping]
Dean I'm sorry.
I didn't mean all those things.
I don't believe you.
I can't be hurt again.
Oh, brother.
It's all right, I won't hurt you.
Come inside.
Jesus I haven't seen this much shit since I left the farm.
[gasping]
Gladys?
Oh, I didn't expect you home tonight.
You and Andy looked like you were having fun.
Yeah.
What of it gets serious too fast?
GLADYS: Well, you could stop seeing him.
What if I feel the same way.
[knocking]
Who's that?
Some people I invited over.
Oh.
[interposing voices]
Gladys!
It's not Gladys anymore, it's Glitter.
Isn't he divine?
[shouting]
So, you popping Carrie yet?
I don't see that that's any of your business at this point.
Ha ha ha, sure it is.
I'm your roommate, you're supposed
to tell me all these things.
Listen, what's just thing, this big--
- Girls, go on. - And this over--
[interposing voices]
So look, give me all the juicy details, all right?
I want to hear everything.
Listen, if you're so interested in this,
why don't you just go and ask Carrie yourself?
I mean, I know you like her. - Ask Carrie?
What would I do that for?
I look upon Carrie as a little sister.
Oh yeah, I had a little sister.
You know how incestuous I am.
Hey, where's the library?
The what?
The place with the books.
Who cares?
[sirens]
[music playing]
You are so childish.
[crumpling paper]
May I see?
ANDY: I was going to do a sculpture, but I'm stuck.
I mean, I don't know what medium to use.
I really wanted to try something different.
Why don't you come to my office after class,
maybe I can help, hm?
Andre Marcel used to take hundreds of photographs
looking for inspiration.
Within them he would see a shape, or form, a composition.
From there he would feel what to do.
Andy, you don't think art, you see, and you feel.
Thank you.
[music playing]
Hey!
Cut that out.
Ms. Hubert gave this to me.
What's the matter, did I get your bad side or something?
I don't have a bad side.
I didn't see you in the studio today.
Do you have any idea how tough it is getting a court?
[music playing]
Running trying to help the hurt inside.
Bracing yourself for the coming of the end.
Baby, don't let a few faces bring you down.
You've got what it takes to make them smile again.
You've got to give gravity a good kick,
let them know who's boss.
Flip the coin, always know you're gonna win that toss.
You're electric, honey, when you smile.
You're electric, honey, all the way.
You're electric honey.
Oh, no, no.
[yelling]
You're electric, honey, oh.
You're electric, honey, oh.
You gotta give gravity a good kick.
Let 'em know who's boss.
Flip that coin, always know you're gonna win that toss.
You're electric, honey, when you smile.
You're electric, honey, all the way.
You're electric, honey, you're a trip, baby.
You're electric, honey, oh.
You're electric, honey, oh.
You're electric, honey, when you smile.
Hm?
[grunts]
Hm.
It's very '70s, wouldn't you say?
I don't remember the '70s.
Impertinent child.
Stuffy old fart.
Mmm, a very provocative style, lots of anger and energy.
Thanks.
But your backhand needs work.
[laughing]
Uh, quite a balanced composition, wouldn't you say?
Mm-hmm, mm-hm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
Oh, very nice.
Passionate yet pure.
A very striking balance.
Is it titled?
I'm calling it, "ambition."
Hmm?
Robert.
It's very nice, I like it.
Very fitting.
Mmm.
Ah.
Carrie, wait.
Forget about Bley.
Look at the junk that he had on display at his gallery.
What if I just don't have it?
Hey, Carrie.
I think that you paint beautifully.
You're prejudiced.
You bet I am.
Good.
[music playing]
[knocking]
DEAN: Hey Andy, come on, open up.
[gasping]
[knocking]
Andy!
Oh, well, clearing up our complexions, I see.
[laughing]
Can't we have a little privacy around here?
Sorry, I've got to get some things together for tomorrow.
Oh yeah, it'll be great to have some peace
and quiet for a change.
Oh, we're going to be taking off around nine.
Is that OK with you?
I'm giving here a ride home, it's on my way.
I forgot to tell you.
Well, I guess I better pack.
See you later, OK?
It's on your way, huh?
Hey, I'm just trying to help out.
[laughing]
Oh, f--
Don't worry.
[horn beeping]
No rush, kids.
Take your time.
He's just giving me a ride.
Hey Carrie, if we leave this car in one place for too long,
it starts to sink.
I guess you'd better go.
Guess so.
So long, An!
Hey, I'll be thinking of you when they bring
out the Thanksgiving turkey.
[screams]
Noogie!
[carrie screams]
[dean laughs]
CARRIE: Buzz off!
Please, stop this car, I don't want to go home.
DEAN: Hot on the curves, Guido!
[door closing]
Hi, Droid.
Yeah Merry Christmas, man.
It's Thanksgiving, Droid.
Whatever, it's all the same.
Hello?
[door closing]
Who's there?
Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt you.
Oh, you're not interrupting, I was just bored.
Aren't you going home for Thanksgiving?
No, home's pretty far away.
I know the feeling.
It's going to be beautiful.
[scoffs]
Andy, you have a remarkable talent.
Well, I had help.
You know, I'm famished.
Have you eaten?
Well, I-- no.
Would you like to have dinner with me?
It's, um.
Please?
I hate to eat alone.
All right.
[thunder]
[music playing]
Here, let me give you a hand.
You like the restaurant I chose?
Oh yeah, you know, all we had where I grew up
was a hunk of beef.
So tell me what--
what were those things that you ordered in the round dish,
and all the sauce.
Oh, escargot.
Escargot?
Snails.
Snails?
Snails?
[laughing]
I ate snails?
MS. HUBERT: Mhm.
You know, it's pretty Mean in here,
I don't really think we're going to need a fire.
Whatever you like.
Would you pour me a cognac?
Yeah, sure.
[music playing]
Where's mine?
[mumbling]
To inspiration.
Make yourself comfortable.
Oh, I am, I'm very comfortable.
If I were any more comfortable, I--
I'd be uncomfortable.
Is that the original?
MS. HUBERT: Mm-hmm.
It was a gift from Andre.
Oh, that's beautiful.
The painting?
Or the subject? - Oh, the painting, of course.
Oh-- you're very--
you're very, I mean--
I think I know what you mean.
You loved him a lot, didn't you?
You are very much like him.
I'm like Andre Marcel?
It's true.
Ms-- Ms. Hubert--
Nicole.
Nicole, this may sound a little crazy,
but are you trying to seduce me?
Whatever gave you that idea?
Well you're breathing all funny.
Now you've got me doing it.
[music playing]
Roll with it, make it quick.
I can't hold on.
Roll with it, make it quick, I can't hold on.
A world unto itself, hiding the way, not even fantasy.
And you, harder than steel, faster than light,
warmer than make believe.
And I don't want to fight anymore.
Don't push me or pull me.
And there's no better way of finding out the score.
I can't, I can't hold on.
I can't hold on.
I can't hold on, no.
I can't hold on.
Confused, out of control, we went too far,
demons do not foresee.
So why can't I let go, one thing's for sure,
you bring out the worst in me.
And I don't want to hear that song.
I know we've been cheated.
And love is so unfair, when the timing's always wrong.
I can't, I can't hold on.
I can't hold on.
I can't hold on, no.
[bell ringing]
Thanks.
[whistling]
GLADYS: Carrie.
Oh, have you seen Andy?
No. Guess what?
What?
Droid and I are moving in together.
Oh, congratulations.
He's found us a terrific loft, off-campus.
We can use it as a studio, and it's right next to a meat
packing plant.
Ooh, that's nice.
[grunting]
Put him down, Guido.
Guido, this is Andy.
You're not to hurt him unless he touches my stereo.
- Charmed. - Likewise.
Excuse me.
[italian music playing]
God, my life is over.
Where did you get that animal?
I inherited him.
From who?
Where'd you spend the weekend, in bed?
Well, so?
My uncle Lou.
Your uncle was in the mob?
Well, remember when you asked about the family business?
Are we talking about the mob?
Well, Andy, there's only one.
My family has the trademark.
And now my dad wants me to take over
my uncle's end of the business.
You mean like drugs and prostitution?
No, worse.
My uncle Lou was--
was in charge of investment banking.
Andy, what am I going to do?
I don't fit in with these people.
How would you like to go through life being known as Don Dean,
and kissing other men.
Seems mean.
I forgot to tell you the best part.
Guido's going to be staying with us.
Do you snore?
No.
Too bad.
Guido snores like a horse, don't you Guido?
That's what all girls say.
[laughs]
Guess who?
Carrie?
Well, of course.
Who else?
Ah ha, I knew find you hiding here.
Hiding?
No, no, I'm not hiding here.
It's wonderful.
Andy, it's just wonderful.
You must have been busy this weekend.
Not really, no.
I thought about you a lot.
- Oh yeah? - Mm-hmm.
Guess what? - What?
I missed you.
Nah.
[gasps]
CARRIE: Ms. Hubert.
ANDY: Hi.
I'm sorry.
CARRIE: Did you have a nice weekend?
Oh, yes, lovely, thank you.
Lovely.
Excuse me.
[music playing]
It's a long, dark day.
[applause]
Where we realize and understand that we've come so far.
Destiny lies close to home.
I will do what I can to keep my spirits safe and strong.
If I wall on the way, nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Love is fire, heat and stone.
With desire, ooh, we can hold on.
Oh no.
When there's anger, out of control.
I'm taking fire, oh, where there's anger out of control.
Hate is fire, love is stone.
[pinball sounds]
You're fucking up, Andy.
What?
I said, you're fucking up.
As in blowing it, fumbling the ball, flushing down the toilet.
Do you have a gift for us?
A gift?
I thought he said mi--
Oh, we're closed.
Get out of here.
Heh.
What do you mean?
Carrie's been feeling very neglected lately.
That's none of your business.
The hell it isn't.
She's ruined three good shirts crying on my shoulder.
We all know what that can lead to.
She's been crying?
Buckets.
So who is she, Andy?
Who?
Your little side piece.
Oh, please, you're talking to an expert.
I know the symptoms.
That is definitely none of your business.
OK, OK, just so long as you realize that makes
Carrie fair game now.
Stay away from her.
You're remember your cousin Frank?
- Uh-huh. - He's dead now.
He used to say that women were like the ocean,
and that guys are like rocks.
And the waves of the ocean smooth out of rocks,
and they break them down into little pebbles.
And then, the little pebbles get married.
[laughing]
You stay away from Carrie.
Wow.
[kissing]
See you later?
I don't know, they may need me down at the gallery.
Fine.
Who was that guy?
Oh, just a friend.
A good friend?
An old friend.
We went school in Paris, years ago.
Satisfied?
Do you love her?
Yes.
Then she must never know.
We should stop.
I know.
I can't.
[cork popping]
Whoa!
To a shining new artist, and his sculpture.
Thank you.
To desire.
Oh, desire, now, is it?
Well, it's good anyway.
Selling your first piece is very impressive.
Pan-Global Petroleum will present
the check at the opening.
Yeah, I still can't believe it.
Yes, As they rape the land, they gouge us at the gas pumps,
and absolve their conscience by supporting the arts.
Oh, and lining our pockets in the process.
[telephone ringing]
Oh, there's Nicole.
I haven't told her about the sale yet.
[whispering]
Oh, I forgot to get it.
Thank you.
Nicole?
I just informed your protege here--
[door closing]
Hmm.
[music playing]
Can I help you?
Bastard!
Liar!
Look the last thing that I wanted to do was hurt you.
Right, you didn't want to hurt me,
It's the truth.
What a joke.
First you say you love me, then you go
and knock up the art teacher.
You didn't care about me.
All you wanted to do was to get your fucking sculpture
that gallery. - That's not true.
I never-- I never want to see you again.
[crying]
OK, kid, let it all out.
That's it, come on, come on, just let it all-- oh, oh.
Yes, yes, I know, he's a dirty rat.
He really shouldn't have done those things to you.
NICOLE: How did you find out?
ANDY: Does it matter?
Why didn't you tell me?
NICOLE: I didn't think that you could deal with it.
I don't understand.
I wanted a baby, Andy.
I wanted your baby.
But I--
Wait.
You planned this?
Don't.
You mean I thought we had something special,
and now I find out that I was just convenient?
Well, what's the going stud rate,
Nicole? $7,000 and a gallery show?
[smack]
Well, I guess that's just the seal of approval then,
isn't it?
Andy?
I'm sorry.
GUIDO: Hi.
Hello, Guido.
You can't go in there.
What?
Ms. Carrie's in there with Mr. Dean.
Well, that bastard!
Let me in there, Guido, I'm got to talk to--
I've got my orders.
Come on.
Guido?
What?
If I ask you nicely, will you shoot me?
Sure.
Forget it.
With my luck, I'd probably live.
Though-- though you read women have little sensation beyond
the opening and the outer third of the vagina,
you're extremely turned on when your man thrusts deeply.
Is your case unusual?
A, yes, B, no.
[music playing]
I found your window wasn't broken.
Didn't look when you closed the door.
It was easier before, being alone.
You did something to my ordinary,
you gave it all a reason.
It's so hard to be here feeling so alone.
And when I close my eyes, I feel you are here, near me again.
And when I close my eyes.
[knocking]
CARRIE: Who is it?
Carrie, I need to talk to you.
(IN HIGH PITCHED VOICE) not Ms. Carrie.
That's me.
Get out of here.
I see your face before me often.
The way your eyes would soften.
But it's hardly there before it's gone, and I'm alone.
Is there healing in a memory?
Or is there only pain?
You return and I remain so alone.
And when I close my eyes, I feel you are here, near me again.
And when I close my eyes, I feel the air you breathe,
and hear you say my name.
What is this?
A formality.
This really won't be necessary.
If you don't sign this, I'll go to the department head.
I just want to get out of here.
Thank you.
Carrie, I-- what are you doing here, Glitter?
Don't call me that.
I don't have time for games, now, Glitter.
It's Gladys.
That Droid, he's such a big nothing.
Where did she go?
Do you know what he did for entertainment?
He'd go next door and watch them shrink wrap the cold cuts.
[peeling out]
[laughter]
Wait a minute, that's not the finish.
[laughing]
Then he turns to me, and he says, "screwdriver."
[laughing]
He says, "Screwdriver?
I thought it was a icepick."
[laughing]
You know who would love that joke?
Carrie. - Carrie!
Ah!
[laughing]
We should give her a call, there's
a pay phone just down the hall.
I don't think so.
Ha!
[laughing]
Where are you going?
I was just gonna get some more.
Oh, get me another one.
[crunching cans]
[belching]
Here's to Andre Marcel, you sure fucked me over.
Yeah but Andre Marcel does not screw around.
Since when do you know so much about art?
[bell ringing]
I'm a artist.
Are you serious?
Yes.
Well, do you have any of your stuff here?
Can I see some of it?
Well, if you promise that you wouldn't laugh.
Guido, I wouldn't laugh at you if you wore ballet tights.
[italian music playing]
Wow.
It's terrific.
You like it?
It's excellent technique.
Well, I was trying to capture the color
and the passion of the subject.
And the-- and the velvet enhances that.
You think so?
I Was concerned about that, but I think it works well.
It's very good.
Ooh, I'm so glad that you like it.
Thank you.
Guido.
What?
Artist to artist, won't you please tell me where Carrie is?
No.
Do you want to know why?
Because I don't think that you love her.
Oh, you're nuts.
Andy, look, you and me are serious artists, right?
Right?
Right.
Then how could you possibly care more about Carrie
than you do about your work?
Tell me that.
All right, then.
I'm going to have to beat it out of you.
What are you talking?
Andy, you're gonna hurt yourself.
I'm warning you.
What are you doing?
I'm not kidding.
You're crazy with love.
Tell me where she is.
[punching]
[punching]
GUIDO: My Aunt Blanche, she told me once, what goes around,
comes around.
So if you go around with two girls, one of them
is going to come around eventually
and clobber you in the nuts.
ANDY: Oh, God, I really messed things up.
GUIDO: The way I see it, life is a matter of making
choices and sticking to them.
Take me, my mother wanted me to be a bookie.
But I was a stubborn kid, I wanted to be a hit man.
What if you make the wrong choice?
There ain't no second chances.
That's the deal.
You make your choice, you stick to it.
[applause]
And a note of congratulations to Pan-Global Petroleum,
the purchasers of the work.
[applause]
That looks like a forest with a mirror coming out of it.
It's beautiful.
Well, it should be, Guido.
It sure cost me enough.
Now it is my pleasure to introduce the artist,
Andy Cooper.
[applause]
This is really a terrific opportunity.
It's probably more than I deserve.
A friend of mine told me that life is making
choices, and sticking to them. That's him over there.
As a matter of fact, he did this.
[muttering]
Oh it's-- it's all right, I deserved it.
Yeah.
There's a story about Robert Rauschenberg
and William de Kooning.
Apparently Rauschenberg went to de Kooning
one day, and asked him, if he could
erase one of his drawings, and then display it as a de
Kooning erased by Rauschenberg.
Well, de Kooning thought about this for a little while,
and then he decided that he could,
but only if he chose the sketch himself.
When de Kooning took Rauschenberg the drawing,
the only thing that he said to him was, "it's my favorite."
And then, Rauschenberg erased it.
I guess that with things worthwhile,
you've got to give up value, to get value.
My friend says that there are no second chances,
but I think that he's wrong.
Andy, what are you doing? Andy, no!
[gasping]
My commission!
[smashing]
Well, I don't know about you, but I feel a lot better.
You can keep this.
[music playing]
[sighing]
Now, will you take me to see Carrie?
Well, my mother told me never to argue with a crazy person.
And man, you are seriously crazy.
Heh.
She's here?
Yeah, if we're not too late.
Hey, man, hey, you smudged the car.
Hey, don't be rash.
Where is she?
Guido, help!
Not this time, Mr. Dean.
What did you do with her, you bastard?
Relax, she's gone.
Where?
Gone.
Went home, dropped out.
You and her, you weren't.
No, no.
You're a friend, I wouldn't do that to a friend.
Besides, she turned me down.
There's no accounting for taste.
Where is she?
She's probably on the ferry by now.
She's catching the six o'clock plane home at the airport.
That's across town, but--
maybe there's still time.
Guido, could you drive me to the ferry?
Let's go.
[music playing]
Coming through.
Wait!
Maybe I can help.
Thanks.
What are roommates for?
[peeling out]
So what are you gonna say to her when you get there?
It's me.
My cousin Tony--
you remember Tony, Mr. Dean, don't you?
Yeah, yeah, right.
He's dead now.
He tried to win this girl back, right?
So he cut off his little finger, and he
mailed it to her, with a card.
Well did it work?
No, she flushed it down the toilet.
[laughing]
Women, go figure 'em, huh?
Oh jeez.
We got trouble.
[cars honking]
[interposing voices]
Damn!
Andy, wait, we can drive around it!
[cars honking]
[people shouting]
[music playing]
[sirens]
Can't lose that girl.
Oh!
Can't lose that girl.
[screeching tires]
Can't, can't, can't lose that girl.
Can't, can't, can't lose that girl.
Can't, can't, can't lose that girl.
Can't, can't, can't lose that girl.
Can't lose that girl.
ANNOUNCER: Boarding at Gate C. Please have your tickets ready.
I can't lose that girl.
Can't, can't, can't lose that girl.
No, I can't lose her.
Can't, can't, can't lose that girl.
I can't lose that girl.
Hey, hey, come back.
[screeching tires]
Hey, I told you to wait.
Look, there's Ms. Carrie.
Oh my God.
I'm too late.
No.
Andy!
He's crazy.
He's in love.
Carrie, I love you.
[sighing]
I'm very happy for you lad, but couldn't you
have waited until we docked?
[bell ringing]
Carrie I just--
Carrie, wait.
[bell ringing]
Please come back.
Just don't run away like this.
You really hurt me.
Andy, I can't just forget what happened.
I know.
But can you forgive me?
Did you hurt yourself?
Yes.
Good.
Maybe we could try to start again.
Carrie?
I love you.
[music playing]
Well, what do you know, there are second chances.
What?
Oh, it's a long story, Mr. Dean.
It's a long story.
[laughing]
Come on, we'll go get you some chicken wings,
or souvlaki, or something.
Can I ride in the front with you?
Sure.
You got it.
[music playing]
Will you be my friend, can you forgive me?
I won't forget what I've done.
Yesterday's pain will be just the memory.
'Cause I know you are the one.
To try starting over, I know it won't be easy.
The hurting just can't be undone.
But this time's forever, I've learned my lesson.
'Cause I know you are the one.
What do you know, there are second chances.
Making it right is a start.
Finding true love in '80s romances
is easy if it's from the heart.
From the heart.
Tomorrow is ours, the feeling just gets stronger.
Our future together's begun.
Value for value, I now know the meaning.
And I know you are the one.
What do you know, there are second chances.
Making it right is a start.
Finding true love in '80s romances
is easy if it's from the heart.
From the heart.
I know that it's so easy if it's from the heart.
From the heart.
