Thank you.

Hey, talk.

Hey, talk later, okay?

I've got a friend in some serious withdrawal. Can't gonna help him. He

score what he needs because it's not around.

He's really hurting.

Yeah. The friend's not alone. That's partly why I wanted to talk to you.

a whole lot of people suffering right now. Drug supplies have been cut to a

trickle. I got, uh... We got a problem.

Precinct jammed up like a damn convention.

They gotta knock over five liquor stores instead of one just to get a fraction

of what they need.

You saw what happened at the precinct yesterday. Tempers are flaring.

I have seen the pain in their eyes. I have felt the terror in their hearts.

not like you're going to see, Pop.

The absence of one little drug causes all this suffering.

Well, they're bringing the plate chain cane.

Oh, yes.

The pain, Master Kane, it is getting worse.

Give me your hand.

There.

They are better now?

Yes, yes.

Yes, more better.

Thank you.

What's that all about?

Uh, Art Wright.

Guy looked pretty limber to me.

He is now.

What is it you need from me?

Okay, the DEA agent thinks that the guy behind this operation is ethnic Chinese.

From Hong Kong. His name's Chang Lu Ma. They have no photo on him, no ID, no

nothing. Just rumors and speculation.

We believe that he's the guy that's handling this operation.

There's a lot of why's to the story, but the bottom line here is that he's

coming and we want him.

What do you need me for?

Okay, his people speak the Think Yang dialect.

You mean the ancient language of the warlords?

Yeah. I just, it's like a secret code.

I thought it might be a way in.

You speak the dialect?

A little.

Well, someone told me that Lumar frequents a certain nightclub when he's

town. Thought maybe we'd get lucky and find him there.

I need you to be there to hear and tell me if anyone's speaking the dialect.

You just got to spot him, point him out, then you can split.

But, Pop, I need you to work undercover for me.

I am to work undercover for you.

Right. What do you think?

I thought it was going to take a lot more convincing than that. No one should

allowed to profit from so much suffering.

Jane, please.

We've got a patient waiting for you.

I'm sorry.

My friend is really sick.

God, undercover with a priest.

I've done crazy things.

The grandson of Kwai Chang Kane walks out of the past.

Well, I want to fight.

So did your great -grandfather when he was your age.

He teaches his son wisdom at a Shaolin temple.

An evil force destroyed that temple. Father and son each believed the other

perished. Fifteen years later, they were reunited.

Now Kane faced new challenges.

And his son grew up.

Look, I'm not my father. I don't do kung fu. I'm a cop. That's who I am. That's

what I do.

I am King.

Could be a couple of days.

Could be here already.

Problem is, we don't have a location.

And we don't have a line on Chang Lu Ma.

Who's this guy?

He's going to help us ID Lu Ma.

He's not a cop.

No. No, he's my father.

Your father. How cozy.

You see, Jack, this is what happens when you get involved with local.

Let's just not forget that you boys from Washington contacted us first.

Confident backup.

How solid is the information on Lumont's club?

Solid.

Fine.

I'm trying to turn this into something instead of leaving it sitting on the

table getting soggy.

My father speaks the Think Yang dialect.

Does anyone else in this room, in this country, do you, Jack?

You got one shot at nailing Lumont, and that's what my father's helped, so live

with it.

You will.

The jerks say I think it's a transmission.

No kidding.

The damn thing's lying all over the damn highway.

Well, at least you got here on time.

I don't need to make enemies of the authorities.

That's the only reason I'm going along.

You're going to be the maitre d'? Yeah.

Come and pick out a dress.

and my model is cloud.

The men are women. The women, men. It's nice. It's fun. Everyone chills good.

Voila. Brad?

Yes, Mr. Daryl.

This is Peter.

He's new.

He will help you dress.

Think the wedding gown.

No disrespect, guys, but I don't think a gown will fit.

Pop, help me out here.

Could he not be a waiter?

How rich is a woman, Mr. Kane?

Women who are taken as men.

If he does not change... They will think he

is a woman.

Yes,

that works.

That works. Get him ready, Brian.

We'll get you into makeup.

Makeup? Actually, cops don't wear makeup. It makes the other cops nervous.

What about your costume?

Busboys can be whatever they like.

Oh, you're going to look wonderful.

Okay, my hair's fine.

Thank you.

What about... Look, look, high rollers. What about them?

They invite scrutiny.

A man who does not wish to be noticed does not announce his presence.

That one wears the shroud.

This is true.

He is concealed.

Yeah, well, in a place like this, who knows what the truth is?

the truth the truth you say

that all our training is really a search for the truth yes

yet the truth of the Tao cannot be known

or touched or described but then how will I know when I

found the truth how do we even know it exists

On a summer day, do you not feel the warmth of the sun

upon your skin?

Yes.

Then is it necessary to look at the sun

in order to know that it is shining?

No.

I couldn't anyway.

It's too bright to see it for more than a second.

Is it not better to be content with the sun's warmth than to be blinded by its

light?

What we seek cannot be gazed upon.

Look too hard for the truth, and you will be blinded by that as well.

Then how will I find the truth?

I know it's not a hunch.

Excuse me.

Here you go.

You're on.

And without

you,

my darling, I would be lost.

Stay close to me.

recommend. Your hand moves with the speed of a cobra's bite.

We've been served well.

It is proper that I reward you.

Please.

was revealed by the movement.

Son of a bitch, they made him.

He blew it. Your daddy blew it.

My, my, my.

A Shaolin priest.

Here, working as a busboy.

What should we make of this?

Well, Shaolin?

It's over, damn it.

Tell me, Shaolin, why is the priest working as a busboy in such a place with

people like this?

It does not matter where I work.

I work.

Yes, a Shaolin does not exalt the king or denigrate the pauper. He does not

judge. He accepts what is.

You are wrong.

Am I?

We accept what cannot be changed.

You are Shaolin indeed.

Your words entangle the mind.

Delightful.

Sit down, Charlene.

Please, tell us what happened.

Why you're here.

It must be a great story.

Please, sit down.

Is that Lumar?

Stay here.

I'm waiting. Do you wish a story?

Or do you wish the truth?

It's wonderful.

Whichever entertains.

14 needs a clean -up.

I'm more help. He's occupied.

Good idea.

Begin anywhere.

Two miles.

Well.

When I was a child, a great eagle swept down from the sky and took me

away to a place of unspeakable danger.

I was given the choice.

To surrender or struggle.

And which did you choose?

Perhaps I have not yet chosen.

Perhaps that's the last choice we all make.

Or the first.

You bear the scars of sacrifice and discipline.

Do they still have meaning for you?

Do you still call yourself a priest?

Behind it, humility.

There is a great arrogance. And that's what gets you killed.

Chen Luma had killed a Shaolin once.

Forgive my friend.

Forgive me.

It was self -defense.

I was younger.

The Shaolin was the enemy.

But I know now that it's not true.

Besides, his skills were...

Overrated.

But that was then. Now, seeing you here in this place, that must be my luck.

It is said that a Shaolin gathers sorrow and gives joy to all he touches.

He gives joy to those who are prepared to receive it.

You have not answered Luma's question.

Are you still Shaolin?

Well, let's see.

You're still Shaolin.

Imagine finding a Shaolin here in this place. What an omen.

I want you to come with me.

I cannot.

I have work.

This?

Do you have a dream, Shaolin?

To feed the poor?

To build a shelter for the human refuge that littered the streets?

I will help you.

Use me, Shaolin.

Why do you offer me so much?

A man never knows where he will meet his luck.

You are my lucky Shaolin. And right now, in these next few days, I need that

luck.

Do not refuse this simple request.

That would be very unlucky for both of us.

Yeah.

Oh, thank you.

Oh, fuck.

It was a great night.

Green, this is Blue. Lumar's leaving. Begin pattern surveillance.

They're going to kill him as soon as they see the headlights.

Detective, you and your father have done a fine job, and you have our thanks.

Peter, now it's time for us to do our job.

Let me get him out of there. I should have thought of that before I went with

him. Don't worry. Everyone out there will know that your father's a civilian.

I'll see what happens when you guys start shooting. The civilians are the

to go. Now I'm going to go get him. Not yet.

We got a local coming out. Somebody stop him.

Stay with Lumar.

That kid's not going to make it out of the parking lot. Let's get going. Let's

go. Move.

All this must seem rather excessive to a man of simple means, Charlene.

The seat is comfortable.

I'm a commodities trader.

We are on our way to a meeting.

Other traders, dealers, very clever men.

Tough negotiators.

This is a very important deal for us all.

At such times, tempers can flare.

Your presence is for love.

And I'm a man who believes in love.

Isn't it gorgeous?

It's beautiful.

Shaolin, come here.

I intend to bring it back to Hong Kong to fly our champion racehorses.

Do you think $16 million is too much to pay for a stallion like this?

$16 million of anything is more than I can comprehend.

Of course it is.

but it is nothing to me.

Not for the privilege of owning such a remarkable creature.

You want to D those guys, Hamlin?

That's a negative, Tony.

Dealers, locals.

They're setting up to buy. You DEA guys, I tell you.

What do you want, names and shoe sizes?

Keep out of this, detective.

If you want to watch, that's fine.

Just shut up and stay where the hell you are.

Do not take your eyes off me.

Mr. Schuman, this way please.

Are your people secure?

Customs people bought and paid for.

You sure you can handle five tons?

We can handle all you can give us.

I'm sure this will be the first of many successful transactions.

Are you really a priest?

A priest helps people.

Do you?

I was 12 when I was adopted by Luma.

I remember my father counting the money and telling me to be a good girl.

I became real good.

But I knew I wouldn't last.

Luma has a new love.

I've seen it, girls, just go away.

Never come back.

I learned everything I could, the business, all the players, where the

was, everything.

He came to rely on me to keep it all sorted out. I became indispensable.

But that is not what frightens you.

You're right.

It's this new deal.

Structure is brilliant.

The goods move through seven countries. Change transport methods ten times.

Minimum personnel information. Totally compartmentalized. Foolproof.

He could run drugs for a thousand years and never have to worry about being

caught.

The only person he has to worry about is the one who knows how it all works.

Me.

I've seen that look in his eye.

I've seen it before and I know what it means.

He's going to kill me.

Help me.

Please.

The lamb is indispensable to the wolf.

One dies so the other may feed.

It's done.

Enjoy.

Until tomorrow, Mr. Schumann.

Good night.

Avalon, I want you on those locals when they leave.

Green is staying on Luma.

Roger.

I'm sorry.

Of course you do not understand.

We're finished here.

Please.

Good boy.

Here they come.

This is cozy.

You always bring the whole family?

Is there a problem?

No, no problem.

Interesting place to keep your stuff.

My goods are perfectly safe.

In plain sight, yet impossible to see.

What I bring here, I can leave here without concern.

Well, let's get on with it then.

My banker is as punctual and as impatient as you are.

Hello.

Well, thank you very much.

No, I understand.

Everything is fine at this end?

Yes, thank you.

A recent innovation in the business.

My friend here can hardly be expected to carry around the amount of money

required to close this deal.

In the past, such a thing invited temptation to betrayal.

We use escrow agents now.

The money has just been released and wired into one of my overseas accounts.

Neat and clean.

The way men of honor do business.

True going, sir.

By all means.

Connie, join us, please.

You too, Sheldon.

Yeah. I don't trust him.

Freeze! Hold it! The agent!

You're under arrest!

We'll set up this deal. We can all retire.

Connie, you're trembling.

I'm fine.

Pop, the DEA is going to blow this place apart. Let's go. Let's get out of here.

I cannot.

Why not?

The girl is in danger of losing her life.

Oh, come on. She's an accessory. Let's go.

I promised I would help her.

I will not leave now.

Where's Danny Ho?

You always bring it in in tax or price?

A ship unloads 500 bags of rice at a time. Maybe 10 of them contain my

The incorruptible customs official is like a drowning man then. He cannot stop

and admire the coral.

Beautiful color.

Well, it sure ain't great.

China white.

The finest heroin on the market. I can guarantee its purity.

This will be very, very good for business.

Well, my standards are high.

That's the key to any successful adventure.

A tyrant measures his success by the blood of others.

Pardon me, Charlene. You tell yourself it's no different than trading in grain

futures.

You speak of escrow agents, bankers, men of honor.

You deal in the blood of innocents.

Hey, I don't have time for family disputes.

Settled it outside or something.

Excuse us. Connie is opinionated.

She is correct.

What are you doing, Shaolin?

Preventing you from killing her.

Connie?

She's my right hand.

The operation is in place. The system is up and running.

You're safer than you've ever been.

You don't need me anymore.

I know I'm dead.

Hey, deal with this in your own time.

We don't need that.

Well, then let's get this done. And keep these two out of my way.

Okay.

All right.

That looks thrilling, Shaolin.

You are a pleasure to watch.

Not unlike that Shaolin I killed years ago.

I watched him, too.

Learned as he fought other men.

Finally, I saw his weakness.

A fall that told me how easy it would be to defeat.

You have that flaw.

Shaolin left a question.

Attack him and you have no chance.

But force him to attack.

And all his training will not save him.

You will lose now.

Ben is going to come by and thank you in person.

To the herbs, not I.

I just came from court.

Connie's testimony is going to rip Lumar's entire network to pieces.

And Connie?

She got immunity. She's lucky.

She has already paid a heavy price.

Her scars will not heal easily, but they will heal.

to talk to you about something.

Each minute of life is a precious gift.

I would gladly share any gift I have with you.

It's never just yes or no with you.

I wanted to talk to you.

I wanted to talk to you about the 15 years.

All that time that we were separated.

See, I figure...

First, I thought you spent it in another temple, but that's not true. You know

things. You know things that they don't teach you at a temple. You know stuff

about street life.

Other things. I just want to know where you were.

How did you live?

It was, as I told you, a time of wandering.

That's too vague. Come on. I told you all about the orphanage. I told you

my foster parents. More specific things about my life?

Yeah. You did.

Well, do the same for me.

If it is that important to you, walk with me, and I will tell you of that

journey.

I don't want some fairy tale about being snatched up by an eagle. I want the

truth.

Perhaps that is the truth.
