The story of Grizzly Adams is big and
powerful and beautiful.

They call me Mad Jack.

And me and my burl number seven been
traipsing these slopes and valleys for a

long spell. So I know the story from the
beginning. My friend Adams was accused

of a crime he didn't commit.

So he escaped into the mountains,
leaving behind the only life that he

knew.

Now, that wilderness out there ain't no
place for a greenhorn, and his chances

of surviving were mighty slim.

There was no time at all, for he was
beaten down, ragged, and nearly starved.

Long about then, he come upon a grizzly
bear cub, all alone and helpless.

Now, Adams knew that little critter
couldn't survive without his help, so he

started right down that cliff, risking
his own life.

To save it.

Now that cub took to Adams right off.

And that was when he discovered he had a
special kind of way with animals.

They just come right up to him like he
was a natural part of the wilderness.

But that bear cub, he was extra special.

As he growed, he became the best friend
Adams ever had. And together, they

became a legend.

time of year for a mountain man is when
old Mother Nature wakes up after

sleeping the winter away.

You might say she springs to life.

It's then she pours out a flood of
energy and paints the wilderness with

beauty it makes a fellow feel like if he
ain't careful, he'll bump his head off

the clouds.

There's one spring I remember in
particular when my friend Adams invited

Robbie Cartman to spend Easter with him.

Now, I ain't much for celebrating
holidays. I feel it's mostly an excuse

working, but to Adams, Easter's
something special.

He works like a beaver preparing a
spread for Easter Sunday that I can

winter while I'm building up a monster
appetite.

And the thing I like best is them
delicious honey cakes he always makes.

That's why we was out looking for honey
on that early Good Friday morning.

Ben found the first honeycomb, but... It
was full of angry bees.

Hey, Adam!

I got one over here with no bees.

There she is right up there.

And there you be a buzzin'.

Just give me a hand and I'll get up
there and get it. No, don't climb up

Jack. We'll just knock you down with the
stick.

Now, what's Easter going to be like

without those great honey cakes of

have much left.

Except the wagon, which luckily was
damaged less than we thought.

But from the looks of things, Adams had
a mighty big problem on his hands trying

to climb down that cliff and bring the
hawk back up.

A man could be swept away in a hurry if
he was to fall into that raging river

down there.

Well, because a 600 -pound bear makes a
good anchor.

Boy, that's a fur piece down there,
ain't it?

How come the hawk is both sacred to him,
Mr. Jack?

Well, because the Coot and I are a
mountain tribe.

They live up close to the sky like the
hawk.

I've never been to their village.

Well, I've been there once or twice.

They live way back up in the high peaks.

They come down to the lowlands in the
wintertime where it's warm and then go

back up in the spring.

Right now they're camped over on the
river waiting for the snows to melt.

Does the hawk go with them?

Of course.

Just like your prayers go with you.

That hawk is the spirit of everything
good and great.

Easy does it, Adams.

Now, I knew Adams was the best there was
at what he was doing.

And nothing or nobody could have stopped
him from going down there after that

hawk.

But I've got to admit, my heart was
beating a little faster as he picked his

real careful -like on that steep cliff.

And I'm sure everyone else who was a
-helping and a -watching was thinking

same way I was.

That was it.

If anything went wrong...

My friend Adams was a goner for sure.

rivers flow free.

New leaves come on the trees.

The birds bring their music again.

Now it is that time, and our sacred hawk
will fly toward the sun

and bring us new hope for the month to
come.

With the help of our friend Adams, our
prayer will be answered.

Jack dances more like a bear than he
does like a hawk.

Adams was right, of course, but him and
me both knew we wanted to do anything

and everything that might help that
sacred hawk fly.

celebration of Easter to our people?

Before we start the Easter egg roll,
Chief Watani asked me to explain our

celebration to you.

Easter means a new beginning, new hope.

We call our Great Spirit God.

And many, many years ago, God sent his
only son down on the earth with a

for all people.

That all men should live together in
peace and in harmony.

But there were some people that feared
our Lord.

And they brought about his death.

Three days later, on the day we now call
Easter Sunday, our Lord arose from the

grave and returned to heaven with his
Father.

On this day, our Lord's spirit was
reborn again.

And we were given this day to remember.

And with it comes new hope that we can
overcome all troubles and start a new

life.

And just like you, every spring, my
people pray to the Great Spirit to

let the sun shine down on them and to
let the cruel winds pass over them in

coming year.

Today is not just any day.

Everything's alive and spring is on its
way.

If you try, you can reach the sky.

All your hopes and dreams are waiting
