And as brand ambassador, if you happen

start properly today on the Condor.

The one -of -a -kind racing GT car
prototype that I went to look at a while

was built back in the 60s.

by Brian Winfield, who was the legendary
Ford engineer stroke designer.

The car is now owned by his daughter,
Kate.

We couldn't start on the mechanical work
before because we needed the skills in

the workshop. We have now with Matt.

The bodywork and paint and stuff are
done.

The mechanical work is going to be next
level.

First job probably will be getting a new
engine fitted into it for the first

time, which is going to be a challenge.

What they need is me to inspire, lead,
generally irritate. And I'm going to go

and do that now.

So, gentlemen, this is it. The condor
has landed. Yeah.

How are we feeling?

Yeah, we're just going through it now,
going through the aftermath.

There's only one ever been made, and
it's our job to get it back up, running

together.

Matt, we did promise when we had that
initial conversation, mate, you join us,

you get to work on unusual stuff.

What's more unusual than the one -off?

I assume there's a comprehensive
workshop manual. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No,

nothing. There is literally nothing.

And actually, this is going to be quite
the challenge. Are you always this calm

within your job? Because we don't know

We like a massive panic, run around,

condor to be honest i've never heard of
it i've heard of brian wingfield he's a

bit of a legend in british motorsport it
seems like it was a bit of a labor of

love for him but it never quite got
finished so we've been tasked to finish

work of probably one of the best
designers in british motorsport history

pressure i don't think i've ever worked
on a one -off car before at all i worked

on a few that probably should have been
made once and then binned off but not

one like this and there's literally two
pages of information on it on the on the

internet it's going to be a lot of
thinking on our feet putting our heads

together see if we can get it finished
hopefully we can

that

in there It's actually quite a rare car,
Lotus Europa.

They didn't make many.

That's even more rare because it's the
last one ever made.

The client commissioned us to conduct a
complete restoration of it about a year

ago. And every week we thought, right,
have we got anybody who can get on the

Lotus? No, we can't. So now from today,
having John in there on the body of it

is just, that's...

what I should have done all along.
There's no increase in the overheads of

building. It's the same building, but
with more work and more money being

generated in it. I'm finally getting it.

This feels good.

For a long time, I've actually wanted to
work here.

The quality of the cars, to be here at
the smallest cog doing them, especially

for Richard, is just sort of once in a
lifetime.

My dream job, really.

Can't quite believe that we're doing
this car. I'm really looking forward to

getting the paint on it, especially with
it being silver.

um because there really wasn't very many
done in that color there's not many

people that really enjoy working on
fiberglass but i like the challenge

so

it wasn't that long ago that well i was
influenced by hadrian like an idiot and

allowed him to persuade me to buy a
stanley steam car That's like the 105

-old steam -powered car.

And then we set about getting it going,
and who knew? Trying to get a 105 -year

-old, basically mobile pressure cooker
working is a bit complicated.

H, it's on fire.

Yeah, I mean, there was fire, but we did
eventually get it going.

But then since then...

Because Hadrian's been so kindly helping
me out with the workshop itself, time

has been a bit short for him to work on
the steam car. But now we've got the new

recruits in, he's got a bit more time to
get back to it, which is good, because

I don't want it to stall and be another
languishing project.

So I want it to work. We're going to get
there.

Right.

H has told me the first thing we've got
to get sorted is the car's boiler, and

today is mission critical because the
inspector's coming in.

Pulled the top and bottom off it so you
can have a good look at it, Al, and get

We've had a lot of leaks.

And I think it's a combination of the
fact that the damn things have dried out

I've been looking forward to this day,
and now I'm dreading it.

at the thickness on the top of the
plate. This is ultrasonic testing.

the thickness of the top plate is, and

then we'll have a look at the bottom
one.

That's the boiler, wire -wound boiler.
And what you're doing is checking... I'm

just checking the thickness of the
plate.

So it's not going to explode? Yeah,

he's going to do now is he's going to
tell you actually what the condition of

the boiler is, yeah? We're 5 .3 on the
top, but that would originally have been

6mm, so it's down a bit on that. Where's
it gone?

We're down to three mil on the bottom.

On the bottom of the boiler.

really. We can't do much else with that

at the moment.

what's the most important thing in the

steam car. It's the bit that makes steam

the car, I've spent money on the car,
and I've got to spend more money to get

We've got a bit of an issue here. It
seems our original engine mount isn't

to match up with our engine mount hole.

Well, I'll go into the engine then and
see if I can actually get some made up

it quick so it doesn't hold us up.

alongside him, he makes a hell of a

difference. He's got a bit more
experience than me, so I can feed off

The one thing I've been missing since
Dad left is that communication of not

Big progress. Yeah.

I must admit, I did feel rather bad
about Richard's steam car boiler.

And I do think there is a good way round
it that's not going to cost the earth

and take months and months and months
and months.

We're going to reuse the actual outer
tube of the existing boiler and just

machine off the ends and then put new
ends in and then re -tube that. So

technically that's a repair.

While H tries to resurrect the boiler,
the rest of the car has been sent down

Somerset to a specialist in vintage
leather.

I'm really hoping the original 105 -year
-old seats can be saved.

This whole steam car experience, I'm
loving it, because it's opening up all

these specialised skills and crafts, and
I'm desperately keen to preserve the

original leather wherever I can, rather
than replace it.

i've managed to patch a couple of them

leather as possible which is the whole

point and then we're going to replace
this panel here

Because unfortunately, the rips are too
close to the seam.

With a piping around the edge.

I've got a hide of leather here, which
is new leather, but it looks old.

This is to glue the piping cord inside
the leather.

Basically giving a little pull on the
leather as you go along.

Now we've got that done, it goes over to
the sewing machine.

somebody doing something exactly the way

was done 100 years ago and that's the
only way to save those seats it needs

somebody who knew well who knows how
they were built in the first place to do

Well, there's nothing like being thrown
in at the deep end for my first repaint

at the cog. I've got a beautiful Lotus
Europa.

Unfortunately for me, it's made out of
fibreglass, which is much harder to work

on, because when the materials are
laminated, it tends to trap air

which creates air pockets.

So it makes pinholes, basically.

So obviously you need to make sure that
they're all filled.

So obviously when you paint over the top
of them, it'll look horrendous.

I basically spent a whole day just going
over each individual panel to make sure

that I hadn't missed anything.

Especially with this being my first job,
obviously I've got big boots to fill.

So hopefully everything will run nice
and smoothly for me. The job will turn

lovely. The customer will be really
happy.

And we'll refuse to do one again.

Treat it the same as metal, but
obviously there's a lot more work that

into getting the reshaping and all that,

the world for his first respray, but it

This is quite a critical conversation
now because we've reached a point where

there are going to be decisions needing
to be made. So we figured, come in and

things that we've rectified so far? A

of them are to do with how big it is and
how small the space is. Yeah.

So positioning, for one, is that you've
got hardly any clearance here.

If you move it this way a bit, it's too
close to that.

Radiator, if you look where the outlet
is on the bottom, it's right in line

where that steering column bracket is.

So we're going to have to step around
and then come up. Either that or we move

the position on the radiator.

But Brian, when he was alive and still
reasonably compus mentis, he went

a hell of a lot of this, how he wanted
the car finished. I think he half had in

mind that him and I would do it
together, but obviously... That didn't

Sam. Yeah, the dementia set in and that
wasn't to be, but it would be lovely to

It's been, well, 40 -odd years since it

with what's been done and the standard
it's been done to.

hearing it run just where we are at the

moment so like with the fuel lines and
stuff if you pop the doors they're not

sent down yeah you can see where the
time's gone you suddenly get to engine

and fitting it suddenly you end up yeah
there's a lot of hours yeah yeah the

work to do so the alarming result is we
are fast burning through your budget and

that's why we want to talk now and say
hang on a minute with something like

Because we've never done one before,
because nobody else has ever done one

before. They've got some decisions to
make about how do they preserve the

in it, all of the memory of the man who
built it, but not break themselves doing

it. But nor do they end up going down a
cul -de -sac where they haven't done

enough, spent enough, and then they've
spoiled it.

I got rather carried away with the idea
of collecting the signatures, and now

I've realised, great, I can go and race
at Silverstone in a really big race. Oh,

So this is the inside of the boiler. You
can see we've machined out the top and

bottom. We've been busy making new
plates for this, so we've lasered them

machined all the holes.

So now we've got it that the plates are
tacked in and we're just about ready to

weld the ends back in the boiler. And
it's not just a normal weld because it's

pressure vessel. So therefore we've
brought in a specialist who only does

And today is the moment of truth.

This guy that's coming.

He's like a superhero welder, is he?
Well, yeah, he's probably the most coded

welder in the shire. And that's good.

Yeah, that's very good, yeah.

it. And you wouldn't do it that way
nowadays. You can't have steering

failing. The other bit I think needs
attention is the bump steer on it and

geometry and this front wishbone.

And what I mean by that is the wheels
are going over bumps.

Instead of them tracking evenly when
they go like that, as they go over

they need to go up and down together.

They tend to go like that as they go up
and down over bumps.

So that needs fixing.

Everything needs doing. The brake
system, the fuel system, the suspension,

geometry.

To be honest, there's not anything in
this car that doesn't need doing, but it

is what it is and it deserves doing
properly.

It's their decision, but it's going to
be a big one.
