Original subtitles

[intriguing music playing]

[Sig] All right, we're gonna start setting.

Set it when you're ready.

Just be careful.

As far as fishing opilio right now,

we're 600 miles from town, and there hasn't been boats

out here in three years.

You know, it hasn't been open for a couple of years now, so.

I got an offload date in a couple of days.

I just want to get this caught

and then move on to our bairdi season.

[Rick] I'm already behind schedule,

so I'm taking a little bit of a gamble.

I'm going way, way up north, all the way up.

Buying a boat is a pretty big chunk of money

to try to come up with.

And the neighborhood's starting to get crowded.

You can see the fight is to get to the gear

and haul it and put crab in the tank.

[Keith] Now I'm just fighting over crab.

You know, it's a brute force fishery.

โ™ช I'm a cowboy โ™ช

[Karl speaking]

Ow.

That's real bad right there.

โ™ช On water โ™ช

It is so dang cold outside. It'll kill the crab.

[Jake] That's a huge boat.

โ™ช Dead or alive โ™ช

These bottom trawlers want to war.

โ™ช Dead or alive โ™ช

We'll get more.

โ™ช Dead or alive โ™ช

I don't like this.

Watch the rail. Watch that rail.

["Wanted Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi fades away]

[Clark groans]

[narrator] 136 miles north of Dutch Harbor.

[Keith speaking]

Pick it up [bleep].

On the Wizard.

It was only a matter of time before the Bering Sea broke me,

I think it has occurred.

[OJ] [unintelligible]

It's unfortunate, but we'll get myself in the clinic.

We'll find out how banged up we are.

But first, we need to find some crab.

After a 25-foot swell heaved Captain Keith Colburn,

kidney first, into the galley counter.

The veteran skipper fights through the pain

of a possible renal hemorrhage,

gambling he can tank another 100,000 pounds of bairdi

before heading to town for medical care.

[Keith] The last thing we need to do is go in early and light.

[OJ] All right [unintelligible].

-[Keith speaking] -Roger.

That's about 70 crab too few.

We've got to come up with a plan.

Jake's got gear stretched all over the place over here.

He's got a ton of...

bottom covered, so he may be on to something here.

Just 40 miles northwest.

[deckhand] Yeah, man, let's keep going -- [bleep].

It's not looking good.

[bleep]. It's not looking good.

On the western side of the bairdi grounds.

[deckhand speaking]

Seven-zero-seven.

[Jake sighs]

Aboard the Titan Explorer.

[Jake] So I just got back to the fishing grounds.

We had issues with the steering.

I have 200 pots to catch 332,000 pounds of crab with.

I have -- I don't know how many hundreds of thousands

of square miles to look.

Just tired of hauling fives and sixes

and tens and sixteens. -[deckhand] Eleven.

Eleven crab.

Eleven.

If I don't catch my bairdi, then not only do I lose

my chance of buying into a business,

but I'll probably lose my job.

While most of the fleet chases

the newly-opened opilio fishery,

Captain Jake Anderson gambles his entire season

on the higher priced bairdi crab,

hauling the first of five strings

spread over 50 square miles of terrain, still $1.4 million

away from boat ownership.

[phone vibrating]

Hey, Keith. How's it going?

Well, it's not very gnarly where we're at yet, but...

How are you?

[Jake speaking]

I'm hauling teens and have been for hours.

Well, you've got so much information sitting

in the water now.

[Jake speaking]

...all I know is I got a lot of bairdi to catch, and I'm...

If you want to try and work together,

All right?

Yeah, that's fine.

[Keith and Jake speaking]

-[Jake] Bye-bye. -Bye.

He can help us...

Mouse.

Oh, without a doubt.

There's no way that we won't get,

as long as he's honest, positive information.

[Jake] Well, I need help.

But I got to trust him,

giving him my information. And he has to do the same.

[Felipe laughs hysterically]

There's crab.

Holy [bleep].

[crew cheering]

Easy hundred.

[crew cheering]

134.

This could be just one pot.

That's how [bleep] bairdi works, too.

You just get one big pot,

and then there's nothing around it.

Here it comes.

[Felipe screams]

Oh, my God! Oh, my God!

Oh, my God! Oh, my God!

Oh, my God!

-[crew cheering] -[bleep]

Oh [bleep]!

Oh [bleep]!

[bleep]!

[bleep] if it keeps going like this,

I'm really gonna regret calling Keith in.

One-eight-zero.

One-[bleep]-eighty is the high pot of the season so far.

But what have I done?

Mother lode, dude.

[crew cheering]

[Jake] Damn it.

[tense music playing]

[Jake] I think I screwed up.

I don't need a partner for this.

I need more pots.

Let's see what we got before I call Keith.

We can just destroy and decimate this area.

Ah!

460 miles northwest.

On the opilio grounds.

Aboard the Northwestern.

It's just starting to perk up.

We're expected to see 18, 22-foot swells.

And 40 plus knots with 50 gusts.

When you get these westerlies pushing up against that ledge...

that's what gives that surge.

With building four knot tides on a collision course

with a steep 80 degree underwater ledge or cliff face,

Captain Sig Hansen races to haul his final 25,000 pounds

of opilio before wave heights exceed 30 feet.

Every hour is critical.

I just wanna get these crab caught so we can get back down

and start fishing our bairdi.

[Sig speaking]

[deckhands] Roger.

[Clark speaking]

Let's go!

Here it comes, first pot coming in!

[deckhand] Let's get some bairdi!

[Sig] You can feel the tension on the line

'cause you can hear it.

So we're gonna have to get the pot up safely

and without snapping it.

[deckhand] That's all right.

Let it do its thing.

OK, we're in 90 fathoms right now.

[Clark] Coming up!

Here we go -- OK, come on.

[deckhand] Whoa.

Not too sexy.

That's not gonna do it.

[deckhand] Kind of weak.

[Sig and Clark speaking]

[Sig] Not good.

But we need more.

We're inching our way deeper and deeper.

[Clark] There it is!

[Karl] Watch your head.

Whoo! Hang in there.

[crew] Go, go, go, go.

[Clark groans]

Big one.

-[Clark] [bleep]! -[Karl] Oh.

[Sig] Oh, what the hell?

-What's going on? -[Clark] Oh, [bleep], man!

Stop, are you good?

I don't know.

[Sig and Karl speaking]

[Sig] What?

-[Clark groans] -[Sig] Damn it.

[Karl speaking]

[Sig] Damn it.

[Karl and Clark speaking]

[Clark] Ah, [bleep], dude.

On the Northwestern...

There's so much tension on that line.

The surge, plus the weight, snaps out of that block

in a half a second.

[Clark groans]

[Karl] Oh!

[bleep] damn it!

Yeah, it cut me.

That was the hardest I've seen it pop out

of that block, single-potting.

[Clark and Sig speaking]

I -- I got a cut under there, but it --

Oh, so you kind of hit your, just kind of got --

Just like right in the jaw, yeah.

My jaw hurts bad.

[Sig] All right, well.

Ah!

-You want to keep going, or you wanna just stop? -Yes.

No, as many as we can put on here.

It's not as bad right now.

[sighs] All right, well, let's try to get this pot up.

I don't know maybe it's cursed.

-We'll find out. -[Clark] It'll be all right.

I'll just keep my face out of there.

[Karl] Whenever you're ready.

It really knocked him in the jaw and got his teeth.

Hopefully, his jaw's not broken.

[Karl] What do we got? What do we got?

We got something here.

Oh, I see some on the top.

That's a good sign.

[Karl] Oh, here you go.

-[deckhand] Looks pretty good. -[Karl] Yeah, buddy.

All right.

[deckhand] Oh-ho, ho, ho.

Oh-ho, ho, ho.

Eight-three.

Let's see here.

So far, the deeper end is better.

If I go even deeper...

you get more of a surge coming off that edge.

But we're running out of time.

-You can set it back. -[Karl] Roger.

Yee-haw!

We're gonna just take a chance, take a gamble,

and stay a little deeper on this one.

I'm hoping that hunch is correct.

[deckhand] Ready.

[Sig] Ah!

[Karl] Going over.

[Sig] I'm afraid to ask what's next.

75 miles north

aboard the Aleutian Lady.

[deckhand] Yee-haw!

[crew speaking]

[deckhand] Whoo-hoo!

[Rick and deckhand speaking]

[loud alarm]

[Rick] We were seeing a lot of good sign in this depth curve.

So, I mean, I took the gamble

packed it up, ran up north...

and we're setting our prospect string.

But I got more quota to catch than almost everybody else.

So...

I got to get moving.

[deckhand] Over!

Going over!

I got it, watch out. Watch out, I got it.

I got it, I got it.

[Todd speaking]

Yeah, hey, Todd. I got you here.

[Todd speaking]

Oh, damn! You guys need any help?

Or what's going on?

[Todd speaking]

Yeah, we do got 'em. So we'll get those boxed up,

and then I'll jog over.

[sighs] He's [bleep] far.

All right, Todd, I'll head towards you, full throttle,

but I'm heading your way right now.

[Todd speaking]

That's what all of us are out here for,

is to help each other.

-[Todd speaking] -Shoot.

All right, guys, I got to make a turn here.

[Rick speaking]

[deckhand speaking]

[Rick] Damn it.

He's straight east, and we need to go to the north.

It's not what I'd like to do,

but they're just drifting.

I mean, this is in the middle of nowhere.

A lot of bad things can happen.

500 miles southeast...

on the bairdi grounds...

[Mac] Yeah, look at that.

Oh, yeah, look at that, look at that, look at that.

[deckhand] This is a nice one right here.

Damn, dude.

It's just getting better.

...aboard the Titan Explorer.

It's over!

[Keith speaking]

[deckhand speaking]

[Keith speaking]

[bleep].

[bleep].

[bleep], damn it. What do you do?

I'm about halfway to my goal and dream,

and that's buying this boat.

And if I get Keith in here, he's gonna come

and slam this area.

There's a lot of [bleep] crab here, dude.

A lot.

I need to consolidate this [bleep] gear.

[Andres groans]...[bleep]!

-[Andres groans] -[Felipe] You, dude, hey.

-[Andres groaning] [bleep]! -[Felipe] Keep 'em over in the bucket.

[Andres groaning] [bleep], [bleep], [bleep] my arm.

Felipe!

[Felipe] What happened?

[Mac] What happened?

[Andres groaning]

[groans]

Did you see what happened?

[Felipe speaking]

[groans]

[groans]

Ah [bleep]!

[groans]

Right now, is a serious situation 'cause we're down

one of our main people.

Now we're hauling gear, trying to set, four men.

Hopefully, we don't have to go into town

and lose a crew member.

[Jake speaking]

[Felipe speaking]

[Jake] Andres!

On the Titan Explorer...

-[Jake] Let me see that thing. -[bleep].

Oh, man, that's [bleep] up.

That's real bad right there.

So that must be the muscle right there.

[Andres speaking]

[Jake] I really got two choices --

take you in now or take you in later.

What do you think is best for you?

Well, it's up to you. I mean...

[Jake] Um...

I don't want to get to town and then the clinic say,

"You should have came two days before,"

or whatever. -Yeah.

[sighs] I'm very sorry, Jake.

[Jake] OK.

What do you do?

What do you do?

This is the hottest spot to fish right now

in the Bering Sea.

And I got to go back into town.

The whole fleet's gonna come and just destroy

and decimate this area.

I think I have an idea.

[phone ringing]

You got me, Keith?

[Keith and Jake speaking]

Oh, you're [bleep] kidding me.

Torn -- torn bicep.

...135 on the first one.

Sounds to me like you're on something that's definitely

worth [bleep] working on.

Well, what I will do is this.

I'm gonna spot check some of your gear,

and if I find something, I'll put your gear on top...

[Jake speaking]

...for all your help.

[Keith] All right, bye.

Well, Mouse, my back, if you're curious, is, um...

is not good. But let's start [bleep] bombing

right on the meat.

I jumped in bed with the monster.

I've got Andres, who's injured, and I gotta go back into town.

But Keith knows where I'm at.

I'm trusting him.

Hopefully he plays nice.

450 miles northwest

on the opilio grounds.

[Sig speaking]

Smile.

-Let me see. -I can't really [bleep].

-Can't smile? -It [bleep] hurts.

[Sig] It hurts.

Got really lucky he didn't get his head cut off.

Aboard the Northwestern.

Whoo-hoo!

We got very [bleep] weather right now,

and it's just getting worse and worse.

[deckhand] Watch out!

OK, we're coming up on our first pot this morning.

All the sign led to the deep, so hopefully there's a reward,

you know, for being here.

The swell's really picked up.

I think it's good 30 now.

Tide is backwards to the wind.

So you have a lot of strain.

That's when the line can pop out of the block real easy.

And people get hurt that way.

So we're just gonna have to try something different here.

I don't know, guys...

I got to turn on every one of them and then come around

and go back up to the next one.

[deckhand speaking]

They know what's going on. If I try to haul straight up,

it's just gonna start snapping lines.

The problem is the rail's gonna be exposed on every pot,

so the guys just got to be real careful.

There it is.

Now I make my turn, and we expose the crew.

OK, making a turn. Watch the rail.

[Sig speaking]

[deckhand] Let's go!

[Sig] Well, we got the first pot in the block.

Come on, baby. Let's go.

Every pot --

oh, it's rolling.

[deckhand] Come on, crab! Come on, crab!

Here it comes.

What do we got?

[crew cheering]

-Ha! -[Sig] Ooh, look at that.

[crew cheering]

[deckhand] Good stuff.

[Sig speaking]

Yeah, big and clean.

[Sig speaking]

[Sig sighs]

Ooh, my God.

Watch the rail.

Oh [bleep], [bleep] damn it.

Watch the rail. Watch that rail.

Watch out, watch out.

On the Northwestern...

[Sig] Oh [bleep].

Watch the rail.

Watch out, watch out.

Man!

[alert beeping]

What happened?

[Karl] Yeah.

-You got it? -[Clark] Yeah, hold on.

What is it? What's going on?

[Karl] Clark went down in the engine room.

[Sig and Karl speaking]

-So you can smell it? -[Karl] Yeah.

[Sig] Oh...

This weather's not helping.

It's just getting worse.

All right.

[Clark speaking]

There's no suction on that at all.

We usually have a spare, we got a spare on board?

[Clark speaking]

[Sig] That's not good.

For now, pump both the tanks with that one pump.

OK, all right.

[Sig] The crab pump is what circulates the water

to keep the crab alive.

We can't be out here with a broken crab pump.

We need it.

We got a lot of money in that tank,

and just having it being circulated on a spare pump

like that that's pressing for two tanks

for the whole way into town, there's no way in hell

I'm doing that.

So we got to fix it at sea. I'll get on the radio.

It's not gonna be easy.

Can't win!

90 miles northeast...

Do you guys see any lights out there?

I don't see nothing.

...on the Aleutian Lady.

The American Lady is dead in the water right now.

The American Lady, they lost her generator.

Then the main died, which means

they're a completely dark boat. I mean, he's just drifting.

In this weather...

at night.

Ah, jeez, man.

The salt water going in burned up the nozzles.

We have the same generator, so we had spare nozzles,

but I really just want to fish.

I'm behind even farther,

and I do not see them out the window.

Todd.

You got me here?

[Todd] Aleutian Lady. American Lady.

Yeah, hey, Todd. I got you here.

What are you guys seeing?

[Todd] Just, it's just sputtering,

and we've got smoke going out.

I'll get those injectors, and we'll swing them around

and float them over to you guys.

[Todd] Thank you, man.

[Rick] All right.

We got a bit of a tricky maneuver coming up.

I had the guys put it into a plastic case.

And since they don't have power,

we got to drift it to them.

And this can be very dicey.

[Nico] So we're gonna send a fuel injector

tied to a trailer bag setup, throw a strobe light on it

so they can actually see it since they're totally dark.

Hopefully, this will get them going again.

-Were you able to find a light? -[Nico] Yes.

Nice.

[Nico] And it works, not bad.

[Rick] All right, guys, hold on. Don't throw it till I say.

We got to time this perfectly.

[Nico] Roger that.

If we take the wrong roll while I'm coming around the bow,

we could slam right into them.

And then, we're both gonna be in danger.

I don't like this, come on.

Don't take a roll.

All right, hang on.

Hang on.

Hang on. Let her go, let her go.

There she goes.

[tense music playing]

[Rick] All right, it's drifting to 'em.

[Todd] Think I see it floating over here.

[Rick] All right, guys, it made it, way to go.

-[Nico] Nice. -[deckhand] Hell, yeah.

[Rick] Nice work.

[Todd] I'll run down there. I'll get back with you.

Thanks, Ricky.

Roger that. I'll stand by.

All right, they got the part. Let's see if it works.

Come on, come on.

-[deckhand] Oh, nice. -[Rick] Oh.

Oh, they're lighting up.

-Oh, I think they got it. -Hell yeah.

-Oh, sweet. -Lights just came on.

[Todd] It's running.

It's sounding pretty decent here so far.

Oh, that's good news.

[Todd] I really appreciate what you did for me.

Roger that.

Yeah, well, hey, maybe next time it'll be us in need.

-We'll be in touch. -[Todd] Sounds good.

-Bye. -[triumphant music playing]

[Rick] Oh, that feels good.

Now all we got to do is haul.

I need to get my gear hauled.

It's not where it's supposed to be.

But I need it to hit. I can't afford to have it miss.

I'm running out of time.

580 miles southeast...

in Dutch Harbor.

[Jake] So I want you to get home, get fixed, and get back,

because we all like having you on the boat.

Yeah, man.

And I appreciate all the -- everything you've done

for me. -[Jake] Yeah.

I take care of my people, especially when someone gets hurt.

All right wish us luck.

[Andres] Yes, sir.

Andres is gonna go see an orthopedic surgeon.

That was a big pile of crab, man.

And I'm sitting at the [bleep] dock.

So my biggest fear right now, is my partner,

he's gonna eat it up.

That could be game over for me,

or Keith will lay me in on a spot,

and we'll get the hell out of here and start fishing.

160 miles north...

[Keith speaking]

[deckhand] Roger.

...on the Wizard.

Jake saw some good numbers northwest of us.

And hopefully... [exhales heavily]

[groans]...[bleep].

I smashed my back in the galley.

I gotta get to the clinic.

We'll find out just how bad this back is.

But we need to find hot fishing first.

[intriguing music playing]

[metal clanking]

[knocking]

-Yeah! -[deckhand] Oh, yeah!

Bang! [grunts]

[Keith sighs]

I wish I could just lace it right through here.

But Jake's a good kid, you know?

We're not gonna sucker punch the spot, right, Mouse?

We leave room for our [bleep] partner.

That's correct.

[OJ speaking]

9-5, all right.

[deckhand] If you have bridle right away,

I'll put it back in there.

By the time he gets back,

I will have that area dialed in for him.

Now, hold up, hold up, guys. We're not setting yet.

I got to find out what this boat's doing up here.

[bleep] me. [bleep] damn it.

I can tell right now by the gantry on that boat,

that is not a crab boat. That is a trawler.

[exhales heavily]

It's a big trawler, too.

The bottom trawler's the one that's just

destroying the bottom.

And if they come through our gear,

they're gonna destroy our gear, too.

Um, trawler, um, about four and a half miles north

of my current position, it's the Wizard.

I have gear in the water right on your course.

[trawler crew member speaking]

There are at least 250 pots in this neighborhood,

Uh, right where you're at, down where I am here as well,

and all the way between us.

[trawler crew member speaking]

[bleep].

I'm not leaving.

I am leaving my gear in the water

where it has been set.

I'll be damned if these guys are gonna chase us off

a good fishing. Ain't gonna happen.

-On the Northwestern. - Whoo !

[Sig] Very good fishing,

but we want to find that consistent number

and stay on it. It's like...

imagine an artist, and he's painting a Picasso.

And all of a sudden, he's got the finishing touches,

and he ran out of paint.

He's gonna be a pretty angry painter.

That's our Picasso. I want to finish it.

Just need that paint.

Great analogy. You really --

you really think of yourself as a Picasso, [bleep]?

Oh, my God!

All right, here we go.

Hey, Picasso, I got another idea, how about you,

Vincent van "Gogh," catch some crab? ["Go"]

I'll be damned if these guys are gonna chase us off

a good fishing. Ain't gonna happen.

On the Wizard.

He can pull his net out of the water

in probably less than ten minutes.

For me to haul 250 pots is a couple of days worth of work.

I got a deadline to meet, I got crab to catch,

and there's crab right here.

I'm not letting him drag his nets through here

and destroy this school of crab.

You know what?

These bottom trawlers want a war.

We'll give them a war.

110 miles outside Dutch Harbor...

[phone vibrating]

[Keith speaking]

What problem?

...aboard the Titan Explorer.

[Keith speaking]

into your gear right now as we speak.

Um...

swallow all of our gear in, like, no time.

[Keith speaking]

[Keith and Jake speaking]

OK, right on.

All right, see you there.

[Jake] Ugh, not good.

We've got real problems on our hands.

I'm not running.

The whole [bleep] damn season's riding on this.

[Rick speaking]

[deckhand] Let's go!

[Rick] The American Lady, we help them out.

You always help each other. You help a brother in need.

We dumped a bunch of pots on our way over here,

so maybe we'll find a little something and that is payoff.

[deckhand] Coming up!

What the [bleep]?

[exhales heavily]

[deckhand] All bad, all bad.

I'm gonna kick myself in the butt pretty damn hard

moving all our gear over here.

Kinda weak.

Wow.

Yeah, stack it, guys. Put it on board.

Damn it.

We need to go north.

This one's going right up the Russian border.

We got 400 to 600 in that same depth curve.

It is frigid cold weather.

It's no joke, but I'm also running out of time.

[tense music playing]

[Sig] Keta,

you out there?

How about now? You got me?

[Svein speaking]

Oh, yeah.

[Svein speaking]

[Sig] No, our pump went out.

I mean, I could have swore we had a spare.

You know, normally we do.

But last time it happened, we didn't order one, so.

But it was the drift-less one, right?

You got a spare on board?

[Svein speaking]

[Sig] Why don't I just meet you at the south side of that ridge

right there?

[Svein speaking]

No, that'd be good, Svein. No, I appreciate it.

OK, Svein -- thank you.

I'm out.

That's Svein Langaker.

Running a boat called the Keta.

Maybe we can get lucky.

Fingers crossed.

We can't be out here with a broken crab pump.

We need it.

We got a lot of money in that tank.

We're walking on thin ice here.
