- I am Adam.

- We have four kids.

Camille is 14, Phillip is 12,

Henry is 9, and Finn is 7.

- So tell us a little
bit about the house.

Everything about it
just feels classic

but also kind of contemporary.

What year was
the house built?

- Early '90s, we believe.
- Yeah.

- OK, it seems like it was built
much longer ago than that.

- We get that a lot.

People think that it's,
like, an old farmhouse,

but it was custom-built.

- How long have
you all lived here?

- Oh, it's 10 years.
- 10 years.

- What was it that drew you
to this kind of a house?

- We're a multigenerational
family here.

I lived with my extended
family growing up,

so we wanted the same
for our family.

When I was little, my family
lived with my grandparents.

And right now, my mom
currently lives with us.

And she loves being
around her grandchildren.

It's priceless being able to
wake up and have those mornings

Andand snuggleseing
awith the kids at night..

Oh, my gosh,
when we found this house,

it was love at first sight.

Our old house really didn't
have any room for the kids

to run and play outside,
so we had to get out.

- And you knew you
wanted something...

- We wanted space.
- With space.

- Adam and I had
dreamed of starting

a legacy home for our whole
family to enjoy together.

And when we saw this house,
we knew that it was the one.

Because family is everything.
family tI mean...ogether.

- Yeah.

- It's what keeps you going
even when things get tough.

- Family is your legacy.
- Yeah, exactly.

- I think that's what we're
all here on this planet for.

- FamIt's to leaveegacy.
some sort of a legacy.

That's what family provides.

- Wow, so this is a family
that likes to spend

lots of time together.
- Yes.

Many generations of our family

have lived a lot of life
in this house.

My grandparents
lived here as well.

And sadly, we've since
lost both of them.

My grandma did hospice
in our homeschool room, which

my husband dubbed the action
room because my son Henry was

born in the homeschool room
iexactly a month to the daych

after my grandmother passed.

- That homeschool room
has seen some action.

- Yeah.
[laughter]

- That's what I'm saying.
It's the action room.

- That's the action room.
- Yes.

This home means family.

It means memories.

It is such a special place
and such a unique property.

- It means everything to us.

- It's a great
space for the kids,

you know, place to have people
over in and entertain in.

- We're entertainers.

- We are always
having people over.

- A great
entertaining property.

- We've made lots
of memories here.

My sister-in-law was married
right where you're standing.

- We have a big
Easter egg hunt.

- We have made many
traditions here.

And we also hybrid
homeschool our kids,

so we wanted room
for them to be kids

and have the kind
of childhood we had where

they were building
forts and making

mud pies and things like that.

And this really
lets that happen.

- That's the big benefit, we can
just send the kids outside.

They're being rowdy?

- Go outside. Go play.
- Go outside. Go play.

- That's right.

- And having something
like this porch.

You know, this porch
is really special to us.

It's a gathering place where we
can have all our friends

and family over and really live
life to the fullest

with those
around us that we love.

- It's just a gorgeous house.
- It's very Southern.

- Yes.
- Yeah.

- There's lots that we
want to do with the house,

and we haven't been able
because a couple years ago,

our oldest son, Phillip,
had a bad accident

and the multiple hospital stays

really depleted
our savings, you know.

Anything we were planning
to put towards the house

went to him because the family
is the priority.

Thankfully,
he has fully recovered,

and we are so grateful that
you're here to help us.

- We are happy to be
here to help you now.

I'm very excited.

It's such a blessing.

Luke and Olivia would be
a great help because for me,

design is definitely
not my strong suit.

And I almost get into what
a gris called, I guess,r me,

an analysis paralysis.

Like, I see so much
that needs to be done,

and I have so many
ideas, but I'm not

Lireally sure howch
tto put them together,

or how to make them cohesive.

And it's really
almost overwhelming.

But I want it to be
a usable space.

I want it to be a place that we
want to spend a lot of time in.

- I have a quick
question for you guys.

I noticed this here.
Do you have dogs?

- We do. Mm-hmm. Yes.
- OK.

Are these in an effort
to keep the dogs kind of in?

- We- That doesn'tes.
really keep them in.

They can get off
the back of the porch.

You know, I don't love
how closed off it is.

- It doesn't give you
the grand entrance

that this porch deserves.
- Yeah. Yeah.

It's almost overwhelming,
the amount of work

that needs
to be done on this porch.

It definitely doesn't
have the inviting

that needs
feel I'd like it to have.

ItIt's a little bit't
depressing compared

to what it was when we first
bought the house because it

does need some work,
and there's a lot of issues.

- You know, it's constantly
having to wipe it down.

- And these porch slats
are really bulky and outdated.

And we can't see through them,
so we feel cut off

from the property
when we're sitting out here.

- And then with your kids
playing out in the front,

I would imagine it's difficult
to keep eyes on them too.

- Absolutely, especially
when they were younger.

Like, it would drive me nuts.

-I'd have to go and sity
whout in the driveway..

I'd want to be sitting here

working with someone
on the homeschool.

Maybe someone who finished
I'd wawanted to play.g here

And it's like, but I can't--
I can't see you.

What are you doing over there?

- It's an interesting
challenge, though,

because at the same time,
we also want to preserve

the aesthetic of this home.
- Exactly.

- Right.
- I don't want to lose the charm

of what this house is.

- Don't want to lose
that country style.

- Exactly.
- Yeah.

- Show me a little bit
more on the front porch

because this front porch
is not just this area.

It goes all the way around.

- No, it goes all

We have the rockers here,
which are

great when we're entertaining.

- Did your grandfather spend
a lot of time out here?

- He did like sitting
in the chairs,

especially when he had company
because he loved to visit.

- This is such a great space.
- I feel like it's unused.

- Well, obviously, they work
here, and I have their books.

We've got crayons and other
supplies all over the place.

because I feel like there's
so much wasted space.

- WeThe desks are a littlerk
hereibit beat-up and old.pks.

They've been here a few
years, and they don't

quite line up with each other.

And they're
a little wobbly now.

- Well, and I wonder,
too, with the kids

getting older--because now you
have one in high school, right?

- Mm-hmm.
She just entered high school.

- Does this space still
function for the purpose

that they need?

- It works good
for my little guys.

But once you get
to middle and high school,

they have so many books

or might have
a laptop and a notebook.

- How often are all four of
them in the room at one time?

- All the time, every day.
- All the time?

- Mm-hmm.

- Do you feel that it would
be helpful to separate

the two age groups?

It sounds like they
have different needs...

- Possibly, yeah.
I hadn't thought about it.

- Different levels
of schoolwork.

- Yeah, possibly, yeah.

- So maybe creating
spaces in the room

where somebody
could be reading...

- Mm-hmm.
- Somebody could be working.

- Absolutely,
because there's always

reading involved
-and a nice place for themg.

to sit and get comfy because--

- Well, yeah, just have to give
the metal chairs a break, right?

- Yeah.
- Yeah, yeah.

- Yeah, they don't love the
metal chairs, but--[laughs]

- Yeah.

So maybe something
more multifunctional.

When I think about
the elementary school

where my kids are,
they have different...

- Stations that they go to
where they may be doing

some art projects
or some reading projects...

- Mm-hmm. Absolutely. Yeah.

- To be able to have different
orzones within this space..

And that way,
you can separate...

when you need to.

- Yeah.

definitely appreciate that,
you know,

because their stuff
takes up a lot more space.

- That's what we
call them, the bigs.

And I couldn't help
but notice that you are

still teaching them cursive.
- Absolutely.

- And I'm looking
at this and having

so many flashbacks of memories
of my own education.

And we also have some pictures.

With the start of school,
we were

working on pulling pictures
for their About Me projects.

- OK.
- And that's one of our

family pictures
for Christmas cards.

And that's Henry and then
Phillip and Camille.

Finn hadn't made
his appearance yet.

a family that's coordinated.

- Yeah, a bunch of lumberjacks.

There's so much potential.

just because you have to put
a lot of trust, but I'm excited.

We love the idea of, you know,
maybe our children one day

jusinheriting it, maybeo put
a raising their family in it,ed.

growing, changing, maybe one
day them taking care of us.

- Absolutely. We want this home
to be here forever.

- All right, we have
an interesting challenge

with this family.

It's a new home to them.

It's not a house
that they grew up in,

but they really want to live
a certain sort of way.

And I think we have
to try our best to sort of

reflect that in our designs.

- They are really
into family and community.

- Absolutely.

But because I think they're
so busy with everything,

they just haven't had
a lot of opportunity

to make the space
as special and unique

and really reflect what their
personal interests

and styles are.

I'm excited about this project.

Jessica and Adam have
been taking care

of a multigenerational family
for a long time,

and this is our chance
to give back to them.

- Yeah, and they're hoping
to leave this to their children

and their children's children,
toso we are starting.

a legacy house here,
which is pretty cool.

- That's a great way to put it.
- We haven't done that yet.

- No, we haven't done that.

So the two spaces
we're going to focus on

are the front porch and the
homeschool, or action room,

as they like to call it.

- We know that with all
of their gatherings,

the whole house sees
a lot of action,

not just the room, right?

- Not just the action room,
yeah.

- And so I want to make sure
that that porch

feels cozy
and comfortable for them.

It's so empty right now.

There's a small table
aand a couple of chairs,.

not nearly enough seating
for the family

or for their entertaining.
aand a c- Mm-hmm.chairs,.

- And it's just fallen
in a bit of a disrepair,

and I want to bring
that back to life.

- So we're thinking
maybe we're going

to change the old spindles
on the front porch.

- So- For sure.king
maybe- Yeah.going

- Remember, the ones
that are there now,

they're really thick and wide,
and she has a really

hard time seeing through them.

She has a hard time
cleaning them.

- Yeah, and I also think
changing those spindles

is going to give it more of a
refined, classic American vibe.

- And the front entry
area has a gate,

so it makes that really grand
entrance feel closed in.

- Kind of claustrophobic when
you come to the front door.

- Absolutely agree.

- So I'm interested
to see what you're thinking

as far as the overall
aesthetic of the front porch.

- This house gives me

into that a little bit more.

because being with their family

is what's most important

Maybe we even rethink

where the dining room table
is located at the moment.

In terms of color, I really love

wthe color of that red barn

so I'm going to try to tie in
that warm red of their barn

by adding some red accents.

be able to see the grain.

And of course,

that we have now.

I feel like we've gotten
really fascinated with tacos,

We really wanted to create
a space where Jessica and Adam

could spend time
with their kids,

and I came up with a classic
design for a porch swing

perfect for two.

But now that I've
seen the porch demoed

and I've spent time
with the family,

this design definitely needs
seento be bigger.moed

And I think I have the solution.

- I see a table saw.
I see some wood.

- [sighs] And you see a sketch
for a daybed, a cozy corner.

I ordered a mattress.

It's 75x35,

so that's going to be
a nice generous space

for everybody to hang out on.

- Oh, that's nice and big.

And it'll be deeper than
the swing was, right?

- So it'll be less
swingy, more chill.

And we were able to locate
the studs right up above it,

so it's hanging strong.

- What are we hanging it with?

- We got a really
nice piece of rope

that's kind of got a little
bit of character to it.

- I was hoping you'd say that.
- Yeah. Chain?

- You just made my day.
- Rope is nice.

- Yeah.
Awesome!

I love the design.
Has a lower back.

- Yep.
- I've got to go find

some really fun pillows,
maybe some bolsters.

so many decisions

to be made for this home.

And honestly, I'm putting
a lot of pressure on myself

to make sure that
every detail is handled

with love and care,
since this house is going to be

a legacy home
for many years to come.

- While Olivia continues to work
on solidifying design details,

to help us create
a special project for the family

the rocking chairs

with a fresh coat of paint.
