- Isn't this land beautiful?

- Yeah, beautiful piece of land.

And look at this house! - It's gorgeous.

- Something about the scale of it, a big wraparound porch.

A- That's so Southern.! - It's gorgeous.

- That doesn't get any more classic.

It feels really welcoming.

- It really does.

I can't wait to see inside.

- Yeah, I can't wait to meet them.

- Yeah.

I'm Jessica. - I am Adam.

- We have four kids.

Camille is 14, Phillip is 12,

Henry is 9, and Finn is 7.

- OK. Camille is 1- Wow.llip is 12,

- So tell us a little bit about the house.

Everything about it just feels classic

but also kind of contemporary.

What year was the house built?

- Early '90s, we believe. - Yeah.

- OK, it seems like it was built much longer ago than that.

- We get that a lot.

People think that it's, like, an old farmhouse,

but it was custom-built.

- How long have you all lived here?

- Oh, it's 10 years. - 10 years.

- What was it that drew you to this kind of a house?

- We're a multigenerational family here.

I lived with my extended family growing up,

so we wanted the same for our family.

When I was little, my family lived with my grandparents.

And right now, my mom currently lives with us.

And she loves being around her grandchildren.

It's priceless being able to wake up and have those mornings

Andand snuggleseing awith the kids at night..

Oh, my gosh, when we found this house,

it was love at first sight.

Our old house really didn't have any room for the kids

to run and play outside, so we had to get out.

- And you knew you wanted something...

- We wanted space. - With space.

- Adam and I had dreamed of starting

a legacy home for our whole family to enjoy together.

And when we saw this house, we knew that it was the one.

Because family is everything. family tI mean...ogether.

- Yeah.

- It's what keeps you going even when things get tough.

- Family is your legacy. - Yeah, exactly.

- I think that's what we're all here on this planet for.

- FamIt's to leaveegacy. some sort of a legacy.

That's what family provides. all here on- Aw. planet for.

- Wow, so this is a family that likes to spend

lots of time together. - Yes.

Many generations of our family

have lived a lot of life in this house.

My grandparents lived here as well.

And sadly, we've since lost both of them.

My grandma did hospice in our homeschool room, which

my husband dubbed the action room because my son Henry was

born in the homeschool room iexactly a month to the daych

after my grandmother passed.

- That homeschool room has seen some action.

- Yeah. [laughter]

- That's what I'm saying. It's the action room.

- That's the action room. - Yes.

This home means family.

It means memories.

It is such a special place and such a unique property.

- It means everything to us.

- It's a great space for the kids,

you know, place to have people over in and entertain in.

- We're entertainers. - Yes.

- OK. - Yeah, yeah.

- We are always having people over.

- A great entertaining property.

- We've made lots of memories here.

My sister-in-law was married right where you're standing.

- We have a big Easter egg hunt.

- We have made many traditions here.

And we also hybrid homeschool our kids,

so we wanted room for them to be kids

and have the kind of childhood we had where

they were building forts and making

mud pies and things like that.

And this really lets that happen.

- That's the big benefit, we can just send the kids outside.

They're being rowdy?

- Go outside. Go play. - Go outside. Go play.

- That's right.

- And having something like this porch.

You know, this porch is really special to us.

It's a gathering place where we can have all our friends

and family over and really live life to the fullest

with those around us that we love.

- It's just a gorgeous house. - It's very Southern.

- Yes. - Yeah.

- There's lots that we want to do with the house,

and we haven't been able because a couple years ago,

our oldest son, Phillip, had a bad accident

and the multiple hospital stays

really depleted our savings, you know.

Anything we were planning to put towards the house

went to him because the family is the priority.

Thankfully, he has fully recovered,

and we are so grateful that you're here to help us.

- We are happy to be here to help you now.

- Yes. I'm very excited.

It's such a blessing.

Luke and Olivia would be a great help because for me,

design is definitely not my strong suit.

And I almost get into what a gris called, I guess,r me,

an analysis paralysis.

Like, I see so much that needs to be done,

and I have so many ideas, but I'm not

Lireally sure howch tto put them together,

or how to make them cohesive.

And it's really almost overwhelming.

But I want it to be a usable space.

I want it to be a place that we want to spend a lot of time in.

- I have a quick question for you guys.

I noticed this here. Do you have dogs?

- We do. Mm-hmm. Yes. - OK.

Are these in an effort to keep the dogs kind of in?

- We- That doesn'tes. really keep them in.

They can get off the back of the porch.

You know, I don't love how closed off it is.

- It doesn't give you the grand entrance

that this porch deserves. - Yeah. Yeah.

It's almost overwhelming, the amount of work

that needs to be done on this porch.

It definitely doesn't have the inviting

that needs feel I'd like it to have.

ItIt's a little bit't depressing compared

to what it was when we first bought the house because it

does need some work, and there's a lot of issues.

to what- It's white.we first bought the- Yeah.because it

- You know, it's constantly having to wipe it down.

- And these porch slats are really bulky and outdated.

And we can't see through them, so we feel cut off

from the property when we're sitting out here.

- And then with your kids playing out in the front,

I would imagine it's difficult to keep eyes on them too.

- Absolutely, especially when they were younger.

Like, it would drive me nuts.

-I'd have to go and sity whout in the driveway..

I'd want to be sitting here

working with someone on the homeschool.

Maybe someone who finished I'd wawanted to play.g here

And it's like, but I can't-- I can't see you.

What are you doing over there?

- It's an interesting challenge, though,

because at the same time, we also want to preserve

the aesthetic of this home. - Exactly.

- Right. - I don't want to lose the charm

of what this house is.

- Don't want to lose that country style.

- Exactly. - Yeah.

- Show me a little bit more on the front porch

because this front porch is not just this area.

It goes all the way around.

- No, it goes all the way around.

We have the rockers here, which are

great when we're entertaining.

- Did your grandfather spend a lot of time out here?

- He did like sitting in the chairs,

especially when he had company because he loved to visit.

- This is such a great space. - I feel like it's unused.

- Yeah, yes, yes. - Yeah.

- Yeah. - Yeah.

- Yeah.

- Well, the vibe I'm getting from you guys is,

you like to do things well that last.

- Well- Mm-hmm.e I'm - It is not a transient life.

- Mm-mm, no. - You guys love

the idea of roots.

- We want a place that our kids love to be

and that hopefully, one day down the road,

they'll maybe want to bring their family

and take over this house, you know.

This is a-- - Forever home.

- It is a forever home.

- I think we're getting an idea about how we can help,

but I'd love to see the rest of the house.

This home is all about family,

and we're going to do our best to honor the love

that they all have for each other.

I love how open it feels.

- And that's one of the things we love

is the real tall ceilings I loand the openness.els.

- Was there a service member in the family?

I noticed the flag.

- My grandfather was retired navy,

so that was on his casket.

So we had it framed.

He was such an important part of this family

that we always want to make sure he's still part of it.

Well, can we see the rest of the house?

- Absolutely. - All right.

- Please lead the way. - Let's take you this way.

- Absolutely. This is our homeschool room.

Tell us about how you use this space.

- Well, obviously, they work here, and I have their books.

We've got crayons and other supplies all over the place.

- WellI really feel likework hereit's not a great setupks.

because I feel like there's so much wasted space.

- WeThe desks are a littlerk hereibit beat-up and old.pks.

They've been here a few years, and they don't

quite line up with each other.

And they're a little wobbly now.

- Well, and I wonder, too, with the kids

getting older--because now you have one in high school, right?

- Mm-hmm. She just entered high school.

- Does this space still function for the purpose

that they need?

- It works good for my little guys.

But once you get to middle and high school,

they have so many books

or might have a laptop and a notebook.

- How often are all four of them in the room at one time?

- All the time, every day. - All the time?

- Mm-hmm.

- Do you feel that it would be helpful to separate

the two age groups?

It sounds like they have different needs...

- Possibly, yeah. I hadn't thought about it.

- Different levels of schoolwork.

- Yeah, possibly, yeah.

- So maybe creating spaces in the room

where somebody could be reading...

- Mm-hmm. - Somebody could be working.

- Absolutely, because there's always

reading involved -and a nice place for themg.

to sit and get comfy because--

- Well, yeah, just have to give the metal chairs a break, right?

- Yeah. - Yeah, yeah.

- Yeah, they don't love the metal chairs, but--[laughs]

- Yeah. - Yeah.

So maybe something more multifunctional.

When I think about the elementary school

where my kids are, they have different...

When - Mm-hmm.bout the el- Right. school

- Stations that they go to where they may be doing

some art projects or some reading projects...

- Mm-hmm. Absolutely. Yeah. - Mm-hmm.

- To be able to have different orzones within this space..

And that way, you can separate...

- Absolutely, yeah. - Yeah.

- The two age groups when you need to.

- Yeah. - Yeah, the bigs would

definitely appreciate that, you know,

because their stuff takes up a lot more space.

- That's what we call them, the bigs.

- The bigs and the littles? - Yeah.

- The bigs and the littles, yup. - Yeah.

- [laughs] - That's really cute.

And I couldn't help but notice that you are

still teaching them cursive. - Absolutely.

- And I'm looking at this and having

so many flashbacks of memories of my own education.

Wow. And we also have some pictures.

This is everybody? - Absolutely.

With the start of school, we were

working on pulling pictures for their About Me projects.

- OK. - And that's one of our

family pictures for Christmas cards.

And that's Henry and then Phillip and Camille.

Finn hadn't made his appearance yet.

- Well, I appreciate the coordination there,

a family that's coordinated.

- Yeah, a bunch of lumberjacks. - Good coordination.

- And here we are again all together.

Oh, right. - Yep. That was before Finn.

That was right after Henry was born.

- Oh, that's great. Beautiful family.

That was right after - It's such a big space.

There's so much potential.

- Well, we're really excited.

We feel so lucky, so blessed to have this opportunity.

- It is exciting.

And we want to incorporate who you are,

who your family is, what you love into what we design.

just because you have to put a lot of trust, but I'm excited.

We love the idea of, you know, maybe our children one day

jusinheriting it, maybeo put a raising their family in it,ed.

growing, changing, maybe one day them taking care of us.

- Absolutely. We want this home to be here forever.

- What do you think?

- Oh, I got lots of ideas. - [laughs]

- What d ♪ ♪u think?

- All right, we have an interesting challenge

with this family.

It's a new home to them.

It's not a house that they grew up in,

but they really want to live a certain sort of way.

And I think we have to try our best to sort of

reflect that in our designs.

- They are really into family and community.

- Absolutely.

But because I think they're so busy with everything,

they just haven't had a lot of opportunity

to make the space as special and unique

and really reflect what their personal interests

and styles are.

I'm excited about this project.

Jessica and Adam have been taking care

of a multigenerational family for a long time,

and this is our chance to give back to them.

- Yeah, and they're hoping to leave this to their children

and their children's children, toso we are starting.

a legacy house here, which is pretty cool.

- That's a great way to put it. - We haven't done that yet.

- No, we haven't done that.

So the two spaces we're going to focus on

are the front porch and the homeschool, or action room,

as they like to call it.

- We know that with all of their gatherings,

the whole house sees a lot of action,

not just the room, right?

- Not just the action room, yeah.

- And so I want to make sure that that porch

feels cozy and comfortable for them.

It's so empty right now.

There's a small table aand a couple of chairs,.

not nearly enough seating for the family

or for their entertaining. aand a c- Mm-hmm.chairs,.

- And it's just fallen in a bit of a disrepair,

and I want to bring that back to life.

- So we're thinking maybe we're going

to change the old spindles on the front porch.

- So- For sure.king maybe- Yeah.going

- Remember, the ones that are there now,

they're really thick and wide, and she has a really

hard time seeing through them.

She has a hard time cleaning them.

- Yeah, and I also think changing those spindles

is going to give it more of a refined, classic American vibe.

- And the front entry area has a gate,

so it makes that really grand entrance feel closed in.

- Kind of claustrophobic when you come to the front door.

It needs a grand entry...

- Absolutely agree. - To go with it.

- So I'm interested to see what you're thinking

as far as the overall aesthetic of the front porch.

- This house gives me farmhouse vibes.

- Mm-hmm.

- I would love to lean into that a little bit more.

So I'm thinking obviously lots of seating - Mm-hmm.

because being with their family

is what's most important obvioto them, right?ating - Mm-hmm.

Maybe we even rethink

where the dining room table is located at the moment.

In terms of color, I really love

wthe color of that red barn is loin the backyard,ent.

so I'm going to try to tie in that warm red of their barn

by adding some red accents. is loin the backyard,ent.

I'm thinking in the chairs and pillows.

Oh, what if we paint the rocking chairs red?

That would be fun.

And what about painting the front door red too?

That's so classic farmhouse.

And we need a porch swing?

It's so Southern. - It is.

And we need a porch swing? - It's almost like a must-have.

It's so Southern. - It is. If you're going to have a porch down here,

you have to have a swing.

- Absolutely.

So what if I build one?

Something that is traditional,

classic cross pattern at the back.

And I want to feature the wood, so don't think

I'm going to paint it.

And Think I wantature tto maybe just oil it,nk

keep it sort of natural, be able to see the grain.

- That's so you. Not surprised by that at all.

And of course, that would be painted red.

No, I can always do a red cushion...

An- Right.rse, t- If I want to bring ind.

some color, some red pillows.

- Yeah. Great. - OK. I love this.

So this is part one...

- OK. - The porch.

Part two... - Is?

- The action room.

But right now, it's pretty boring.

- Yeah. - Everything's white.

Bookcases are white. Walls are white.

There's nothing inspiring about that space.

- Yeah.

- And it's not really functioning well for them

anymore because of the different age ranges

that we have now. - Mm-hmm.

an- They don't havethe enough space to sprawl out...

that- Mm-hmm.now. - All on that one central

table space there in the middle. enough space- Yep.rawl out...

- So I have a few thoughts about what I want to do there.

- OK. - I love the bookcases.

- Yeah. - I still think that they serve

a really great purpose for function.

So let's reimagine the bookcases - Yeah. - I still think that they serve

to give them individual workstations.

I would also love to give them an area for imagination

and creativity, but in order to do that, we need color.

I'm an artist at heart, so I cannot wait

and to start picking outrder to dthe color palette.lor.

I'm talking color on the bookcases, the walls,

andthe seating, the rug.rder to dthe color palette.lor.

I really want to drench this entire room with color.

- Great. - So I'm thinking wall covering.

- Ooh. - It's your best friend.

- It's a way where - Iyou can interjectend.

the most personality... - Uh-huh.

- For the least effort... - OK.

- In my opinion. - Mm-hmm.

- I love this wall covering. - Yeah.

- I love the colors in it. - Mm-hmm.

-- It has some really deepg. turquoises.

I love the pattern.

It's very dynamic.

Some of this vibrant green in there, and it

shimmers a little bit. Can you see that?

- Oh, yeah, definitely. - Isn't that fun?

- And there's lots of light that comes in

that could reflect off that.

- I just want to make that space very energetic.

And I want it to be a place where they get excited to go.

- Mm.

- Right now, it's the schoolroom.

Who gets excited to go to the schoolroom?

- Well... - You do?

Who- I like school. go t- Oh, you nerd.m?

- - No... - [laughs]

- Olivia, something else I want to do with the kids

is give them the opportunity to sort of express

things that interest them, maybe hear a little bit

about what they think about the family,

about things that excite them,

and try to find a way to interject that

into the room as well.

and- That's sweet.way to in- Yeah. that

- I'm interested to hear what they would say.

- Kids also tend to really not hide their feelings very well.

- That is true. - Are they going to like it?

- I don't know. [laughs] - I--

- It is going to be - Are quite the testlike it?

to design something that all of them love...

- Because the last thing I want is for them

to walk in and say, what?

- We don't like it.

Well, we'll just go and find out what the children want.

to meet up with the kids because I'm guessing

they might have some ideas of their own

for a special project we have planned.

I wanted to ask you guys some questions because you know

that we're doing something special for your family

and for your house.

What we want to do is we want to get you guys to help

collaborate on a piece of art that we're going

to put up in your action room.

- So if you had to draw a picture

of something that makes you think of your family,

what would you do?

- Christmas is our biggest party,

so I feel like that kind of reminds me of our family.

- I love that.

- Our house. I don't know.

What about you, Henry?

- Your house. - I'll draw Grandpa.

- Like, what was Grandpa interested in?

Do you guys have pets? - Yes.

- We have two dogs, Jack and Charlie Waffles.

- Why Waffles? - Why not?

- [laughs] That's a good answer.

- And two cats, Cupcake and Molly.

- That's Molly.

- Could someone draw a picture of Molly?

- Yeah. - Not me.

Molly's legs are moving very quickly.

Molly wanted to see the picture. - [laughs]

- And when you think of your mom, what do you think of?

- Love. - Love.

- That's a beautiful idea.

What about foods?

- I am going to draw a taco.

- OK. - I don't like--

- You don't like tacos?

- No, I don't like my mom's tacos.-

- You don't like--OK.

- I love my mom's tacos.

- I love that. That's fantastic.

I feel like we've gotten really fascinated with tacos,

which I think is wonderful.

Whatever you guys draw, we are going to try to turn it

into something awesome and beautiful.

We really wanted to create a space where Jessica and Adam

could spend time with their kids,

and I came up with a classic design for a porch swing

perfect for two.

But now that I've seen the porch demoed

and I've spent time with the family,

this design definitely needs seento be bigger.moed

And I think I have the solution.

- I see a table saw. I see some wood.

- [sighs] And you see a sketch for a daybed, a cozy corner.

I ordered a mattress.

It's 75x35,

so that's going to be a nice generous space

for everybody to hang out on.

- Oh, that's nice and big.

And it'll be deeper than the swing was, right?

- So it'll be less swingy, more chill.

And we were able to locate the studs right up above it,

so it's hanging strong.

- What are we hanging it with?

- We got a really nice piece of rope

that's kind of got a little bit of character to it.

- I was hoping you'd say that. - Yeah. Chain?

- You just made my day. - Rope is nice.

- Yeah. Awesome!

I love the design. Has a lower back.

- Yep. - I've got to go find

some really fun pillows, maybe some bolsters.

- All right.

- There are still so many decisions

to be made for this home.

And honestly, I'm putting a lot of pressure on myself

to make sure that every detail is handled

with love and care, since this house is going to be

a legacy home for many years to come.

- While Olivia continues to work on solidifying design details,

I've called in my friend Jamie

to help us create a special project for the family

inspired by my conversation with the kids.e

- So let me tell you a little bit what our plan is.

And in general, this room a lhas seen a lot of lifen is.

in the family's history. -This is wh- Oh, wow.o school.m.

- So we want you to help us turn some of the kids' ideas

about family and memories that -Thiwe can put on a specificl.m.

art piece and feature in this room

so the kids can look at this

and see a little bit of themselves.

- For sure, that's important.

- I'm going to show you some pictures, OK?

- I'm ready.

- Hopefully, it's going to be your inspiration

for how to fill this canvas.

Now, this was a really sweet picture.

Here's everybody in the family.

It did give me the idea that having

gatherings is a really big part of the way

they spend family time.

- Family is huge for them.

- Family is very theyimportant, yeah.me.

I love this picture. Henry did this.

And I said, what do you think of when you think of your mom?

I loAnd he said,ure. she has a big heart...

- Mm-hmm. - And she also has red hair.

I thought that was really sweet in a way

to sort of honor their mom. - Yeah.

- I think that could be a really fun thing.

Here's one important thing that we have to somehow incorporate

in whatever you do.

- And Grandpa, they love him very much.

- Is he? Oh. OK. - Yeah.

- Yeah, that's great to know. - Yeah.

Something that came up a lot was their cat Molly.

- Yeah, that's great to know. - Oh, she's a star.

So- She's definitelyup a lot a part of it. Molly.

- OK, so now that I have some good information,

I'm going to sketch out some things with chalk...

- OK.

- And really incorporate everything.

Yeah, I'm excited.

- With all the old spindles gone from the porch,

it's time to install the new ones.

[drill whirring]

So I think the best way to do this,

like, we started here, space it out from the center.

Perfect.

Yeah, this is going to work out really nicely

because with their old porch, the spindles

were so wide that they couldn't see the front lawn.

I also am really happy with the navy blue

here up on top and the white pickets.

I think the contrast is really interesting

and nice and easier to clean.

That's a lot of spindles.

- We want to do something really special

to honor Jessica's grandfather,

so I'm going to liven up the rocking chairs

with a fresh coat of paint.

You know, he really loved rocking away on that porch.

And now his grandkids get to enjoy them as much as he did.

- I thought you were going to paint those rocking chairs red.

- Well, you know, I thought they would

get redder as they dried.

[laughs] Yeah, it's wishful thinking.

You know, I was trying to pull the red from the barn,

but this is not the right one.

It's not red. It's coral.

Material-wise, I would love a big, chunky wooden table,

something that feels warm, people can gather around.

So that's definitely the kind of table we're on the hunt for.

But I mean, we'll see what we can find.

that chunky wood element from the swing on the other side...

I've always loved this porch.

It was one of the things that drew me to this home,

but we haven't utilized it as much as we could.

You know, I was hoping to like it,

and I didn't know that I would absolutely

fall in love with it.

I think Luke and Olivia have added a ton of heart

fall to our home. it.

I am really excited to use the space

and spend quality time with my kids here as they grow up.

- To see them grow, to see them prosper,

that's very important to us.

And I'm kind of eager to see if the kids can remember some

of the things they talked about because they're all kind of

mixed up in that portrait.

depending on how you feel.

It's a room about colors, so why not have

different color lights too?

The chairs, they're going to love the painting station,

that they have little cubbies.

I'm really excited to see their excitement over it.

- One of the funnest things about doing this,

it was the opportunity to design a room

from the perspective of your kids.

It was really fun to just be so much more open to things.

- And I absolutely had the best time.
