and landed in this beautiful
house inherited from my father,

and we've been stuck with
what to do with it ever since.

well, I'm in California.

But during the pandemic,
my dad got sick with COVID.

- And then it just
went downhill from there.

- Yeah, and so then that's
when I found the will

and discovered that he had left
everything to me to manage.

whto the conclusionll

that it would be in our best
interest to uproot the family

- YeaAand relocate. that's

- Dad was a large
personality,

and an overall joy
to be around.

We always just had
a real chill time together.

Liked to laugh together.

Dad was proud
to buy this house.

He was very much
in bachelor mode

as far as the design
and furnishings.

- A big man with taste
lived in this house.

- Yeah.

Not a single woman's touch
to be found.

That's all Herman.
[laughter]

- He got what he asked for.

- He did,
by all the means necessary.

- Right, right.

But he's not necessarily here
to enjoy it.

- Actually, we feel as though
that he's still with us.

- Yeah, very much.
- Yes.

- In what ways?

- OK, so we're sitting
in the family room

watching television,
and we hear steps upstairs,

which used to be his bedroom.

These giant footsteps...

- Get outta here.
- Walking across the room.

- And we look at each other
like, now who's doing that?

His electric shaver

by itself in the bathroom.

- Yes.
- Just on.

His presence is still very much
alive in this house.

- And he had a sense of humor,

so we know
that he's messing with us.

- He turned on your shaver.

He's like,
I don't like this scruff.

- Yeah, yeah.
- Let's get rid of it.

He's like,
I donHere's an idea.ruff.

Well, do you want to maybe
show us

a little bit more of the house?

- Absolutely.

- We'd love to see more.

- The presence of Dad's spirit
is definitely comforting.

Sometimes we do wonder
what his reaction would be

if we made any drastic changes.

I don't want us
to do anything

that would make him
stop visiting.

This was our immediate
solution to what to do

with all of
our little knickknacks

and things that we still
haven't figured out

what to do with.

- But not enough storage
or space because of the things

that belonged to him.
- Absolutely.

- His clothes, furniture

was now dropped in our laps.

How are we going to
make this make sense?

- We need a plan.
- Yeah.

- So why do you feel
you've been stuck

in finding what that plan is?

- We came here
with the intention

of keeping this house up
in his name,

keeping his spirit alive,

and taking on the
responsibility of the home

and making him proud.

We want to make him proud.

Having this house fall into our
laps and all of the expenses

that come with home ownership--

it's been a challenge
navigating all of that.

- When you take on a house
for the first time,

ityou have all thesee
navidifferent thingsat.

you didn't have to worry about.

But maintaining the house is
also giving it a personality.

Giving it a little color.

Giving it a little design.

GGiving it a little flow.

- Renovating the house
is so important

because we intend to keep it
in the family forevermore.

We don't want to completely
erase his memory nor presence,

but we feel
it's beyond time for us

to start making this house
our home.

He dressed in the colors
of the rainbow.

Like, he didn't shy away
from any of it.

- And there's that smile.

- Yeah, not afraid of color.

- This is one of my favorites.

I just love this shot.

fishing rod matches his outfit.

This was the last time
he came to visit in California.

You know, you embrace your
parents when they're older.

You really embrace them
and take opportunity

to love on them.

Capture the moments.

Because you just never know.

But, yeah, this is my big guy.

a fun nickname for you?

- He referred to me
as his little ladybug.

- Aww!

- And I didn't know that.

I mean, I have a couple
ladybug tattoos,

but I didn't know

- He had quite a watch

Who is this handsome man
in the navy outfit?

- This is our son, Makai.

in the footsteps of Grandpa.

We both had serving
in the US Navy in common.

That was one of the things
that broke the ice

between he and I.

He was a radioman.

So the captain would
communicate to him

what he wanted to communicate
to another vessel.

- Being in the military
is kind of dressing the same,

looking the same, tucking
your shirts in the same way.

But when he was not in uniform,
he let his personality fly.

- Yeah, absolutely.
Absolutely.

- We'd love to see
more of the house.

- Sure. Let's go.

- Show you the kitchen.

- When I first walk
into the kitchen,

I'm hit with
-how much I would love.

to change the countertops

and the drawers
-that are peeling back.

That's my office.

I love to cook,
and so you got to have

counter space and storage space

in order to
keep everything together

and make it neat.

- When you're in this kitchen,
when you're in this space,

do you think about him?

- When- Oh, absolutely.itchen,
when you'- Yeah.his space,

- So it's been difficult as far
as not wanting to erase him

totally from the house.

He created the drawers.

The things that are in them
is because he put them there.

So I just put it back
in the drawer.

It's like, I feel like
he's still with me.

- My dad,
he was a woodworker like me,

and there was certain things
that you just couldn't touch

- My dad,
because they were Dad's tools.

And then all of a sudden,
Dad's gone,

and I'm allowed
to touch all the tools.

So it feels super intimate,
you know.

- Very much so.

And that's that sentiment
with this entire house.

- Yeah, that's right.

So a lot of cooking was done in
this kitchen and is continued.

Cooking is a big part
of what you guys do.

- Yes.
- It's a big part of what I do.

I've been cooking
since I was 12.

- Wow.
- So to land in a real kitchen

I've been cooking
versus an apartment kitchen?

Fun.
- Yeah, yeah.

- Yeah.
- But even that being said,

I still notice the crock pot
lives in the dining room.

- We don't have places forot
everything to necessarily go.

- And it definitely lacks
the color

that we've seen
in his wardrobe.

He did not carry that over
to the kitchen.

Is that something you
would like to see change?

- Yes.

- For sure. Some personality.

- I notice this
little area back here.

- We use this space for,
you know, coffee

and laptop time
and things like that.

- And I noticed,
it gets good light.

This peninsula is so tall,
it just sort of cuts off

all that really beautiful light

pouring in from the windows.

- In your dream dreams,

what does your kitchen
look like?

- That's a beautiful question.

- She can make it happen, too.

- The appliances
are all original.

Of course, an upgrade of those.

Cabinets--just a lot
of wear and tear.

The floor--no matter
what you do to it,

Definitely a new faucet.

do it, so it works pretty good.

And the cushions reflect that
because his body imprint

is in that section
of the couch.

But it just needs an upgrade.

It's very worn in.

Well, it definitely feels
like the space

also doesn't have the
personality on the walls.

lacking that.

And so this is
the perfect opportunity

for us to be able to put our
personality into this space.

- He never used the fireplace.

A little sadness, though,

because there's also elements of
it where we're saying goodbye.

I'm still dealing with
letting things go.

- But we definitely embrace
the newness of what's to come.

The house is tired.

But we're fun. We're energetic.

We're still with it.

So we need the house to,
like, represent our vibe.

is just not totally
replacing my dad.

And in general, the house is
in need of a real refresh.

and they just don't know
what to do with everything.

- It doesn't feel like theirs.

I want to do something with this
house that honors her past,

her dad,

and honors the navy tradition
in the family.

So I think it's clear.

We're gonna give Mark and Kisha
a brand-new den and kitchen.

- I was inspired
So by these photosear.

that she showed us of Herman
in his red and blue suit.

- Yeah, he's a dapper man.

- He is a dapper man.

So another picture.

And it happens to be
the perfect color scheme

for what I want to do.

- I would love to take
this color palette

and interject it
into the fabrics

and the furniture of the space,

'cause it also ties
into our naval theme

with the reds and the blues
and the whites.

I just thought we could give
her a Georgia coastal feel.

- So let's talk
about that kitchen.

You've got that weird
little island

that serves no purpose
whatsoever.

And you remember that
really tall peninsula wall

that just cut that breakfast
area off from the kitchen?

I just want to take that down
to countertop level,

open that entire space up,

so now it becomes
an eat-in kitchen.

- So just to recap a little bit,
in the kitchen,
open that entire space up,

Mark and Kisha will get
all new cabinets,

hardware, and appliances.

- Don't forget countertops.

It'll all have a breezy
coastal color palette.

- And we got to do something
about the floor

in the kitchen.

- I would love to do tile.

You know,
something bright and airy.

Blues, whites, maybe some grays
to go with that coastal feel.

- OK, we can make that happen.
- Perfect.

- So in the den,

I had an idea
about using reclaimed wood.

Now, this is a way to kind of
infuse texture, character,

and also a way
ato honor a bit of history.

- Yeah, it's weathered.

It has a little bit
atmore personality to it.y.

- And to that point,

something that I see
in a lot of households

that have military families

is portraits of them
in their uniforms.

So if we can feature

each member of the family
in a portrait--

- I love that.
- Yeah.

And we could use even
some of that reclaimed wood

- I love that.
to sort of trim it out,

which gives it
a little more character.

Because they talked a lot
about Herman sort of

maybe still being in the house,

or his spirit still being
abouin the house, of

it'd be nice to give him his own
little pocket in the house.

So I thought that
his picture frame

could do something special.

Maybe behind it,
we open it up

and we see some memories of him.

I want this to be a special
focal point in the room,

and I like that it has
a hidden meaning

I want this to be a special
fjust for Kisha and Mark.

I believe that this
is a beautiful way

to honor all three men

and their contributions
to our country.

- I found an old mantel
that will be perfect

for their fireplace,
and I want to use salvaged wood

to frame out the pass-through
between the two rooms.

We're gonna replace the floors,
definitely,

and use that reclaimed wood
to build the picture frames

out of.
- I love that.

So I'm going to replace
all of Herman's well-loved

but worn-out furniture with
more family-friendly pieces.

You know that picture of Herman
in his snazzy red and blue suit?

It matches our coastal
navy theme perfectly,

so I'll be carrying those colors
into the furniture too.

- And remember Herman's
big china cabinet

from the dining room?

I want to use it to fill
that blank wall in the den.

- Yes, I had the same idea.

But I have a twist to it.

I think we should paint that
piece so that it coordinates

with the rest of the room.

- Oh, yeah, that's a good idea.

to spray it down.

Starting with a set of
custom picture frames

made from salvaged lumber

to showcase all three
generations of navy men.

But I feel like
Herman's big personality

to showcase all three
deserves something unique,

so I'm building a special
sentimental keepsake box

in the back
of Herman's picture frame.

The picture frame will be set
on invisible hinges

to open and reveal
a secret box behind it.

The box itself will be 21 inches
wide by 3 1/2 inches deep,

with shelves to store precious
keepsakes from her dad,

all tucked behind
Herman's formal navy portrait.

For this box, I'm using one of
the first woodworking techniques

I ever learned from my dad.

It's simple:
overlapping butt joints.

The corners are glued
and reinforced

with a few taps
from the nail gun.

I need to start.

I'm loving working with
the salvaged wood I found,

and it's gonna be perfect
for the picture frames

and for casing out that archway.

I also found a beautiful old
mantel I'm going to restore

to add more of that
and frustic charm, warmth,chway.

and character we want
for this den.

All right, I think
this mantel is really nice.

It's exactly that vibe
that Kisha is looking for.

Kind of beachy.

Kind of a little bit weathered,
but in a good way.

Sort of tie into
that barn board,

sort of reclaimed timber
that we're gonna do as well.

But it needs some work.
