- [Dan] Imagine being
swallowed whole

by a 60,000-pound sea monster.

- The whales open their
mouths wide and surge up

and take a big gulp.

[videographer gasps]

- Before they can react,

it actually takes
them under the water.

[kayakers yelling]

- Or learning the hard way

that dogs aren't
very good drivers.

- That sweet, adorable
Boxer dog jumps

through the driver's side door
and lands on the accelerator.

- Suddenly, the van is hurling
backwards towards James.

- How about being in
the middle of a fight

between a snake and a hawk?

- The snake coils even
tighter around Peggy's arm,

and that hawk is persistently
pecking at the snake.

- Peggy's arm is
going through it.

She's like, "Jesus, take
the snake and the hawk."

- [Dan] These are the freak
accidents so strange,

they are truly "Unbelievable."

[suspenseful music]

- Any homeowner knows DIY
projects can be dangerous,

but next time you whack
your thumb with a hammer

and mutter every swear
word under the sun,

you'll want to remember the
story of Forthman Murff,

and realize it could
be a lot worse.

[foreboding music]

- Forthman Murff is a guy
that likes doing hard work

and he's a guy that likes
doing the job by himself.

He's a 74-year-old
retired lumberjack.

And Forthman has decided to
retire to a multi-acre property,

where he's far away
from everything,

and he's surrounded by trees.

- One day, he looks up at
a hundred-foot tall tree

on his property and
decides its day has come.

Forthman fires up the chainsaw
and is ready to get to work.

[chainsaw rumbling]

- He performs this technique
that's called notching,

where he expertly
cuts this V-shape

into the side of the tree,

where he wants the tree to fall.

And then on the other side,

he makes this horizontal cut.

- [Dan] With the
chainsaw still roaring,

Forthman steps back
to admire his work.

- The tall tree tips over
just like he wants it to,

but as it falls,

[tree creaking]

it hits the massive limb

of another tree nearby.

The rogue limb
comes crashing down

and slams into
Forthman's shoulder,

knocks him back 10 feet.

- He ends up falling
into this ditch.

- Then another nearby tree falls

and crushes his foot
and breaks his leg,

but he has not let
go of the chainsaw.

- He twists his body and he
ends up landing on his face.

He blacks out.

- [Dan] A few seconds later,
Forthman wakes up to a sound

he's never heard before.

- The chainsaw is still running

and he can tell it's
cutting something,

but it's not wood.

He sits up, he looks down,

and he notices there's
this giant pool of blood.

- [Dan] That's when he's hit
with an excruciating pain.

- Somehow, as he was falling,

still holding onto the chainsaw,

he manages to land on
top of it with his neck.

- And it continued to
cut through his windpipe,

his esophagus, and muscles,

and now his head is only held on

by his carotid
artery and his spine.

- Forthman realizes that the
only way he's gonna be saved

is by getting to his truck.

Problem, his truck
is 150 feet away,

which means he now has to
hop all the way to his truck

while also maintaining the
integrity of his severed head,

literally holding it
on top of his neck

so it doesn't fall off.

- As he's hopping along,
he's struggling to breathe.

The saw has cut his
esophagus and his windpipe,

and things keep
filling up with blood.

So every so often he has
to stop, lean forward,

lift his head like
a Pez dispenser

so he can clear his
airways of blood,

so he can breathe again.

- Miraculously, he
makes it to the truck,

opens the door, turns the key,

and starts driving the half a
mile to his neighbor's house.

- [Dan] Despite being shocked
by the gruesome sight,

Forthman's neighbor drives
him to the nearest hospital,

20 miles away.

- When they get there, this
hospital is a rural hospital.

It is not equipped to
put a man's head back

onto his shoulders
and neck properly.

- So they put him
in an ambulance

and tell him he's gotta
go to a bigger hospital

in Tupelo, 30 miles away.

- [Dan] Two hours
after the accident,

Forthman finally
makes it to Tupelo,

but he's barely hanging on.

- Forthman goes
through six surgeries

to reattach his head and
fighting off all sorts

of infections along the
way, and he makes it.

- Unbelievably, after
all of these surgeries,

seven months later, he's
able to talk and breathe

and speak completely normally.

Forthman's surgeon
can't even believe it

and says with his injuries,

he shouldn't have even survived

if that had happened in
the hospital parking lot,

let alone two hours away
by himself in the forest.

- Forthman Murff
lives another 18 years

and continues cutting down
trees until the age of 92,

still using that same chainsaw.

While his miracle survival
is one in a million,

at a Sacramento ice cream
parlor, the odds aren't so kind.

- It's a beautiful
Sunday in September

and the Golden West Air
Show is in full swing

at the Sacramento
Executive Airport.

- There are about a thousand
airplane enthusiasts

and families watching
from the ground

as all kinds of military
planes, old aircraft,

as well as experimental,
newer planes buzz around

and do various tricks
in the sky above.

- [Dan] By 4:30 PM, the
show comes to an end

and spectators are looking
to make a fun afternoon

a little bit sweeter.

- Across the street
from the air show

is a place called
Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor.

There's a huge crowd, many of
them coming from the air show,

and they're gathered
enjoying some ice cream

with family and friends.

- And one of the
coolest things about it

is that it's located
directly in line

with the end of the runway.

So while you're
enjoying a banana split,

you can actually watch
the planes taking off

right above you.

- [Dan] Back on the tarmac,
pilots from the air show

are ready to head home,
including Richard Bingham,

and his vintage
Korean War era F-86.

- The F-86 is one of
the fan favorites.

This airplane is built
for dog fighting,

and the cool thing
about that airplane

is that it's actually seen
combat during the Korean War.

- Bingham, who is a
very seasoned pilot,

taxis to his runway position.

Then on command,
he throttles up,

and speeds down the runway.

- And about a third of
the way down the runway,

things start to go bad.

He goes to lift the
nose of the airplane up,

and for some reason,
he can't get airborne,

and he's still cruising
across the ground

in excess of 150 miles an hour.

- Bingham tries to
abort the takeoff,

but it's too late for that.

He runs out of runway.

- [Dan] In a matter of seconds,

the F-86 speeds past the runway

and through a chain link fence,

causing the external
fuel tanks to explode.

- The plane is now on fire,
completely out of control.

It crosses the street and
crashes through a passing car.

- [Dan] Both people in the
car are instantly killed,

but this freak accident
doesn't end there.

- This out of control fireball

plows through a parking
lot and slams violently

into the crowded
Farrell's ice cream shop.

- An explosion rips through
the ice cream parlor.

It's like a missile
that's torn through it.

- Inside, people are
pinned under pieces

of plane and roof, many
of them already dead.

It looks like a war zone.

- [Dan] Firefighters
are quick on the scene

and able to save 28 people,

but many others aren't so lucky.

- 23 souls are lost that
day at the ice cream parlor

and countless more are injured.

As for Richard Bingham,
miraculously, he survives.

As he's being carried to safety
with a broken leg and arm,

he begs the first
responders, "Don't save me,

save the people in the fire."

- [Dan] It appears to be a
powerful moment of selflessness

until the truth behind
the accident is revealed.

- In a later FAA investigation,
Richard testifies

that he'd only spent
three and a half hours

in the cockpit of this plane,

yet still claiming
prior to the flight

that he'd mastered the aircraft.

- Richard is a master pilot.

He's got over 2,000 hours under
his belt, but in Learjets.

This is a military aircraft.

Experts say you need 100 hours
minimum to become proficient

in a Cold War era
fighter plane like this.

- Due to his inexperience
flying this airplane,

he had no idea that the
F-86, the way it's designed,

is you can't be aggressive

in bringing the nose
of the airplane up

before you get the
right amount of speed.

Had he had more
experience flying it,

he would've known when that
nose comes up too quickly,

you kill all the
airflow over the wings,

causing the airplane not to
be able to generate lift,

destroying your chances
of being able to take off.

- By the end of
the investigation,

while Richard Bingham
isn't criminally charged,

he does have his
pilot's license revoked.

- While a tragic day,

the Farrell's ice cream
disaster compels the FAA

to impose heavy restrictions

on retired military
aircraft operating

in densely populated areas.

- Our greatest
pleasures often come

from the simplest things.

For a young Ukrainian lab
tech, it's chewing bubblegum.

But his obsession for never
ending flavor backfires

in a truly unbelievable way.

- Vladimir Likhonos is
a 25-year-old student

at Kyiv Polytechnic Institute
with a passion for chemistry.

- He's there training
to become a scientist,

but he has a habit of taking
chemicals home from the lab.

- Not because he's
trying to steal them

or for any nefarious purposes,

he's just very, very into
the study of chemistry.

- [Dan] That passion even
extends to Christmas break

when Vladimir's home
for the holidays.

- Vladimir spends a lot of
time in his bedroom at home,

running various experiments.

And while he does, he
chews a lot of gum.

- Like a lot of people,
Vladimir hates it

when you're chewing your gum
and all the flavor disappears.

It's just like
chewing cardboard.

- [Dan] Luckily, Vladimir
figures out

how to solve this
problem using chemistry.

- On his desk next
to his computer,

he keeps a little saucer
of powdered citric acid.

Citric acid is
incredibly powerful.

It's a flavor enhancer
for candies and sodas.

And when he dips his gum in it

and puts it back in his
mouth, it restores his flavor.

- He has his lab stuff
strewn all around his room.

And in this particular day,

next to his saucer of
citric acid powder,

he has a little baggy of
another powder from his lab.

- Vladimir is so
focused on his work

that while he's dipping and
chewing, dipping and chewing,

he accidentally dips
into the other bag.

And then puts the
gum back in his mouth

and continues chewing.

- [Dan] Without warning,
that small mix up

triggers a violent explosion.

[explosion echoes]

- His brother, Rostislav,
goes into Vlad's room

to check on what had happened.

And when he gets there,

he sees the most
horrifying thing

you could ever imagine.

He sees his brother Vlad
sitting in his chair,

blood covering his face,

because his lower jaw
is completely missing.

- It turns out the other powder

that he had dipped his
gum in was an explosive.

- It's later
discovered that Vlad,

in addition to being very
passionate about chemistry,

also had an affinity for
making his own fireworks.

- While the actual name
of the explosive powder

was never released,
it's estimated

that it was four times
more powerful than TNT.

- Many speculate that it
could be tert-butyllithium

or cyclonite because both
of those are white powders

that react explosively
to pressure.

- So while Vlad is
chewing this gum,

which has been dipped
in this chemical,

the act of chewing
compresses all

of these explosive
molecules repeatedly,

which causes it to explode.

- Police and paramedics
rush to the house,

but by the time they get
there, it's too late.

Vladimir's dead.

- A lot of the first responders

that arrived on the
scene described it

as one of the most
terrifying things

they've ever encountered.

- Death by bubblegum is awful,

but two years later, on the
other side of the world,

another man finds himself

in a different kind
of bubble trouble.

- Steve McCormack
is a truck driver

from Opotiki, New Zealand,
which is on the north island,

and it's a small
town that's miles

from the nearest hospital.

- Steven is at work standing
behind his truck cab,

hooking it up to a trailer,

something he's done a
thousand times before.

- [Dan] It's just
another day on the job

until one small
misstep changes that.

- All of a sudden, Steven slips.

And he feels a sharp
pain in his left buttock.

And at first he thinks,
oh, he fell on a nail

or something sharp.

- Then he hears a whoosh
sound of compressed air.

He turns to see what he's
fallen on and it's not good.

- [Dan] It's a high
pressure air hose

that's now embedded in his
rapidly expanding left buttock.

- Within seconds, the
valve is releasing air

into his body up to a
pressure of 160 PSI.

That's more than twice enough

to burst the tires of his truck.

- [Dan] The air
pressure is so powerful

that Steven starts to inflate.

- His skin is pulling
taut and expanding.

- Skin's not
supposed to do this.

Yeah, does skin expand when one
is pregnant or gains weight?

Yes, but this is done
over a period of time.

Not instantaneously.

The pain is excruciating.

In a matter of minutes,
he's twice his normal size.

- His face is unrecognizable.

Even his eyes are
getting bigger.

And one of them, he loses sight.

- His bosses rush over
to see what is going on.

The valve is still
embedded in him,

and Steven is howling in pain.

- He's so firmly
affixed to this nozzle

that his bosses can't
pry him from it.

His skin is expanded around it.

- [Dan] With no way
to pull the hose out,

they quickly shut
off the air supply.

- Now after they're able to stop

the air flow going into Steve,

his coworkers are
actually able to lift him

off of the valve and
lay him on his side,

which is a good start.

There's just one problem.

The air isn't
coming out of Steve.

- His bosses put
ice packs on him

to help relieve his suffering,

but he is laying there
in agony for over an hour

before medics finally arrive.

- When the emergency
service gets there,

their first thought
is let's give him

something for the pain.

So they try to put something
in one of his veins,

but the pressure from
the air inside his body

just shoots the
needle right out.

- When the doctors
examine Steven,

they realize that the
air from the compressor

has filled his body cavity,

it's separated muscle from fat,

and it's putting pressure
on his heart and his lungs.

- One thing the doctors
do note right away

is how lucky he is
because if that valve

had hit an artery or a
vein, it would be deadly.

But thankfully, it
was just embedded

in the fat tissue of his
buttock, which saved his life.

- Doctors insert a tube
through Steven's ribs

and into his lungs
to help him breathe.

- So the tube was able to
help him breathe better,

but it didn't do anything about
all of the air in his body.

Oh, no, unfortunately,
he would have to wait

for it to pass the
old fashioned way,

through belching and flatulence.

- After three days
in intensive care

and an inordinate
amount of passed gas,

Steven is restored
to his normal size

in one of the most
bizarre accidents

the doctors have ever seen.

- Except for a
small puncture scar,

Steven walks away good as new,

and with a bloated
reputation to match.

Forever known as the
real-life Michelin man.

- When you've got a dog,
excitement is

part of the package.

Unfortunately, that exuberance

can sometimes have
unexpected consequences.

- 68-year-old James
Campbell lives in Florida

and he loves his pet Boxer.

- What's not to
love about a Boxer?

His squishy little face,
a little knob tail.

It's his best friend.

- So one lovely day,
James and his wife, Iris,

decide they're gonna hop
into their 1995 Chevy van

and head out to get
some errands done.

- Iris hops in
the driver's seat,

'cause she's gonna back
the van down the driveway,

and then James will get
out and open the gate.

- As she's always done,
Iris has the van in reverse

with her foot on the brake,
and she opens the door

so she can keep an eye on James

to know when the gate's open,
so she knows when to back up.

- And at that very moment,
the couple's 70-pound Boxer

comes barreling
through the yard,

wondering where his
owners are going.

- And then while
Iris's door is open,

that sweet, adorable
Boxer dog jumps

through the driver's side
door, down to the floorboard,

and lands squarely
on the accelerator.

- Suddenly, the van is hurling
backwards towards James.

- Iris tries everything to
stop the van, but it's no use.

The van hits James,
runs him over,

and ultimately, traps him
underneath the wheels.

- [Dan] When paramedics arrive,

they find James completely
crushed by the van.

They believe he died instantly.

- You can't blame the parents,
you can't blame the dog.

It's just a tragic,
awful, unbelievable,

and bizarre accident.

- Being run over by your
own car is certainly ironic,

but it pales in
comparison to the man

who meets his maker by way
of his own money maker.

- When you watch
someone ride a Segway,

it's almost like they're
defying the laws of physics.

They're kind of floating by.

- In the 2000s, Segway
is a growing company.

People are using them
all over the place.

Tourists and mail people,
even cops are using them.

- [Dan] By 2009, perhaps no one
is a bigger fan of the Segway

than British millionaire,
Jim Heselden.

- At 62 years of age,
Jim Heselden is a guy,

who just loves to
ride his Segway.

There's not a
morning that goes by,

where he doesn't
have his morning roll

through his neighborhood of
West Yorkshire in England.

- Jimi's is truly a
rags to riches story.

He spends his youth
in the slums of Leeds.

And at 15, he starts
working as a coal miner.

- Growing up in the coal mines,

Jim becomes pretty
rough and tumble,

but he also has a few good ideas

and sort of fancies
himself an inventor.

- In 1989, he comes up with
an idea that makes him rich.

It's a gigantic
foldable container

to be used on the battlefields.

- These containers
become a huge hit

with militaries all
around the planet.

And by 2009, Jim's become one

of the wealthiest
people in Britain.

He's worth about half
a billion dollars.

- [Dan] That's when
Jim goes all in

on his favorite pastime.

- Jim loves his Segway so much
that on Christmas day, 2009,

he buys the
fledgling Segway Inc.

And being the owner
of the company

doesn't change a thing for Jim.

He's still out there writing
his Segway every morning.

- So nine months after Jim
buys the Segway company,

he's rolling around on a
hilly dirt road near his home

that he's very familiar with.

He's rolled on it
hundreds of times.

As he's on his roll, he
notices about 50 feet away,

there's a dog walker
approaching him.

- So as Jim gets closer
to the dog walker,

he decides to be courteous
and let him pass,

so he backs up just a little
bit to give him room to pass.

- Jim backs up his Segway
just a hair too far,

and he and his beloved Segway

go careening down
this 42-foot drop

complete with jagged
rocks and tree limbs,

and he ends up
falling face first,

dead in the river wharf below,

his Segway floating nearby.

- For Segway, this
is terrible PR.

The hard truth is anytime
after Jim's death,

every time you saw a Segway,

all you could really think was,

"Hey, didn't the owner of the
company die on one of those?"

- It's a really
unfortunate story.

This was a guy who was
loved by his community,

poured money into the town,

and he even employed
350 people in Leeds

to work at his factory.

- [Dan] Jim Heselden's
tragic fate reminds us

that it is sometimes
the things in life

we love the most that
hurt us in the end.

- Ah, the monotony
of household chores.

What some of us wouldn't
give for a little excitement

to save us from the drudgery.

A Texan named Peggy
Jones would tell you

to be careful what you wish for.

- Peggy Jones is out riding her
lawnmower in Silsbee, Texas,

just having a good
time living life.

When all of a sudden,
out of nowhere,

a snake falls from the
sky directly onto Peggy.

- Clearly, the snake is just
as frightened as Peggy is

because it wraps around her arm
and then lashes at her face.

- [Dan] The snake clings
desperately to Peggy

as she tries to fight it off.

As bizarre as this
aerial anomaly is,

it's about to get even stranger.

- As she's fighting
with this snake,

she hears this crazy loud
screech coming from above.

[hawk screeching]

- When she looks
up, she sees a hawk,

and it starts diving
directly in her direction.

- The hawk latches
itself onto Peggy's arm

and starts pecking at the snake.

- [Dan] Peggy's now
caught in the crossfire

of a ravenous
raptor and a snake,

who's determined to
go down fighting.

The snake coils even
tighter around Peggy's arm

and that hawk is persistently
pecking at the snake,

but it just keeps missing
and hitting Peggy's poor arm.

- Clearly, the hawk
had caught the snake

and was planning on eating
it for lunch, but it dropped.

And now, it wants
its snake back.

- Suddenly, the hawk flies away.

Peggy's like, "I've been saved,"

but the hawk just
does a couple circles

and then dive bombs it again.

- It's the same horror
show over and over again.

Peggy's arm is going through it.

Peggy just wants
to mow her lawn.

She is like, "Jesus, take
the snake and the hawk."

- [Dan] Finally, the hawk
gets a grip on the snake

and flies away with its lunch.

- Although, she's relieved that
the snake and hawk are gone,

when she looks at her arm,

she realized that she's
suffering deep puncture wounds.

She has scratches.

She's covered in bruises.

She runs to the house, she
screams for her husband,

and he drives into
the emergency room.

- The doctors in the
emergency room do not believe

that this woman has
not been stabbed.

It looks identical to wounds

that would be
sustained from a knife.

- And he just kept
on it and kept on it,

and I just couldn't
get rid of the snake.

- This is the first time
they've seen a hawk attack

on a human like this.

This is probably gonna be the
last time they'll see this.

- Lucky for Peggy, she
makes a full recovery.

The snake does not.

If Peggy's tale cautions
us to keep our heads up

while mowing the lawn, the
next one warns lucky fishermen

to keep their mouths shut.

- It's just another day at
Boscombe Pier in Bournemouth,

and 28-year-old
fisherman, Sam Quilliam,

is out with his friends

and they're hankering
for some Dover sole.

- Sam casts his line, he
gets a bite, he reels it in,

and him and his
buddies are ecstatic

that they've caught a fish.

- When Sam pulls the
fish up over the pier,

sure enough, it's a Dover sole.

- [Dan] With his catch secured,

next is the most important part.

A tradition that's
been practiced by

anglers for decades.
Time to pucker up.

- Sam holds the
fish up to his mouth

and has done what so many
fishermen before him have done.

He plants a big smooch
right there on the sole.

- [Dan] Unfortunately for
Sam, this is one flirty fish.

- The fish squirts out of
his hand like a bar of soap,

and it goes the only
direction it can go,

directly into Sam's mouth.

- This fish moves fast.

Instinctually, it's thinking
it's returning to the water.

So within a matter of seconds,
it's down past his molars

and it lodges itself
in Sam's throat.

- Sam is in an all-out panic
because he can't breathe

and he starts running
around like a chicken

with his head cut off.

- Sam's friends, Steve and
Matt, at first, are laughing.

They think it's a joke,

but they quickly realize
that he's in trouble.

They try to grab the fish,
they reach into his throat,

but they can't get it.

- The fish has fins
around his body

and they fold in one direction
allowing it to go in forward,

but if you try to pull
the fish back out,

they open up and so
that prevents them

from pulling it
out of his throat.

- [Dan] Soon, Sam's turning
blue,

and ultimately, passes out.
-Sam goes into cardiac arrest.

One of his buddies
attempts to perform CPR

while the other is calling
emergency services.

It is chaos on this pier.

- The paramedic arrives
within three minutes.

And when they see what's
going on, they're in shock.

They've never seen a fish lodged

in someone's windpipe before.

The paramedic grabs some forceps

and attempts to go in there
and pull the fish out,

but they have the same
problem his friends have.

It's stuck.

- Finally, after seven tries,

he's able to pull the
fish, in its entirety,

from Sam's mouth.

- [Dan] On the way
to the hospital,

medics in the ambulance
successfully revive Sam,

leaving him with an
unbelievable story to tell.

- After he gets out
of the hospital,

Sam returns to the
scene of the kiss

to thank the paramedic
who saved him.

- I've never seen
anything like it.

- Also, to take photographs

with the fish that
almost cost him his life.

- When asked if he will
ever kiss a fish again,

Sam says he will, but
only if they are too big

to fit in his mouth.

- The Old Testament
speaks of a prophet Jonah,

who spent three days in
the belly of a whale.

While nobody has since
matched this feat,

two California
kayakers come closer

than probably anyone wants to.

- It's a gorgeous and
calm Monday morning

in San Luis Obispo Bay.

Making the day extra special,

20 enormous humpback
whales have been spotted.

- Kayakers and paddle boarders
are flocking to the bay

with the hopes of watching
the animals feeding.

- Two women, Julie McSorley
and her friend, Liz Cottriel,

are enjoying Julie's
two-person kayak.

- [Dan] That's
when the two ladies

spot a massive humpback
whale just below the surface.

- Julie, for one, is
thrilled at the sight

of these real life
giants and wants to go in

for a closer look.

- Liz, on the other hand,
is a lot more hesitant,

but Julie assures her that
nothing bad will happen.

- [Dan] Liz finally
agrees to go.

Meanwhile, just
below the surface,

something very big is
getting ready for lunch.

- Humpbacks feed on what
are known as bait balls,

giant dense swarms
or schools of fish

that gather near the surface.

When the whales are
ready for a bite,

they open their mouths wide

and surge up through the bait
balls and take a big gulp,

taking whatever
fish they can catch.

- Julie and Liz are getting

an incredibly close front row
seat to this amazing sight.

But maybe they're
a little too close

because the women suddenly
find themselves surrounded

by a very frightened
school of fish.

- And before they
can react, suddenly.

[tense music]

[water sloshing]

Their entire kayak is
lifted up into the sky.

[kayakers gasping]

- [Videographer] No.

- Engulfing their entire kayak,

with the two women
inside the boat.

- Julie and Liz are now in
the mouth of this 50-foot,

60,000-pound humpback whale,

and it actually takes
them under the water.

- [Dan] Although, it's a
truly terrifying scenario,

there's actually
a silver lining.

- Unlike sharks or
orcas, humpback whales

do not have teeth. They use
frilly plates called baleen

to filter small fish and
crustaceans from the water.

They couldn't swallow a human

because their throat
is only the width

of an average grapefruit.

- The whale very
quickly realizes

that something in it's mouth
that shouldn't be there.

So it spits out Julie and Liz,

and they find themselves
popping up to the surface

of the water with
their kayak upside down

right next to them.

Surprisingly, they are
completely unharmed.

- If there's any
question just how close

these women got
inside this whale,

as they're walking to their car,

Liz shakes out her shirt
and a bunch of fish fly out.

- When Julie and Liz get
back to their vehicle,

Julie checks her pockets,

and it appears there is
one casualty on the day.

Her car keys are missing.

- While kayaking the high seas

might seem a bit on
the adventurous side,

sometimes, even the most
benign tourist activities

can take a catastrophic turn.

- It's a busy Saturday
in a suburb of Barcelona,

and a father and his young
son are enjoying a stroll.

They're walking along
the center of the city

and they come across something

that would be cool to any kid.

It's a recent installation,

a giant, 20-foot paper mache
statue of a Stegosaurus.

- The dad sees this as the
ideal time to get a selfie,

so his kid poses near the
dinosaur, and suddenly,

they're hit with the
most foul rotten stench.

- [Dan] That putrid
smell seems to be coming

from the depths of the dinosaur.

- The father starts
investigating.

He's looking all
around this dinosaur

and he notices a crack
in the back right leg

of the Stegosaurus.

- He looks in the crack
on the Stegosaurus's leg,

it's the body of a dead man,

upside down inside
the Stegosaurus,

and he is horrified. - So
instead of taking a selfie,

the guy dials
emergency services,

all while wondering just
how this guy got in there.

- Police arrive at the scene

and soon investigators
pieced together

the unbelievable story of
the man's final moments.

- A few days prior,
a man was walking

through the town
also taking photos

when he sees the giant
paper mache Stegosaurus.

- Much like the father and
son who found his body,

he's fascinated by it.

- [Dan] It's believed that
he then decides to reach

into the dinosaur to take
photos of the inside.

- And then he accidentally
drops his phone,

and it falls inside
the dinosaur's body.

- The man who obviously
wants his phone back

crawls inside the belly
of this Stegosaurus,

and he sees this
faint glow coming up

from the back right leg.

- Desperately, he's
reaching deeper

and deeper into the leg,
trying to grab the phone.

- And then he slips, falls
and smashes head first

into the ground, probably
killing him instantly.

- [Dan] That's where he
remains for the next two days,

stuck inside the
Stegosaurus leg.

- After the man is discovered
by the kid and his father,

firefighters decides
to open the statue

and remove the dead body.

- Police immediately
identified the body

as that of a 39-year-old
man, who was reported missing

by his family just days earlier.

- Turns out, extinct or not,

dinosaurs are mighty dangerous.

- As gender reveals
get more creative,

some ideas do not go as planned.

Like one dad-to-be in Arizona,

whose vision turns into
a nightmare in seconds.

- In Arizona, south of Tucson,

a guy named Dennis Dickey
is there with his wife,

who is very, very pregnant.

Now surrounding them is all
of their friends and family,

and they have been assured
they're about to see

the most exciting
gender reveal ever done.

- Out in the brush,
about a hundred feet away

from any of their friends
and family is a giant box,

and it's labeled boy or girl.

- Now Dennis, who happens to be

a U.S. border patrols
agent who's off duty,

pulls out his rifle.

And he takes aim at the box.

- [Dan] After missing
his first three shots,

the fourth time is a direct hit.

- The box explodes.

And it releases a giant
powerful plume of blue smoke.

It's a boy!

- Unfortunately, the
explosion doesn't just let out

a cloud of blue smoke.

Fire immediately catches
the surrounding dry brush.

- Within seconds, the
flames are out 30 feet

in every direction.

Dennis Dickey runs to the fire,

which is already out of control,

and he's trying everything
he can to put it out.

He's throwing dirt on there.

He's trying to
stomp parts of it,

but nothing is working.

- Start packing up.

- And the blaze just keeps
growing and growing and growing.

- You gotta feel
bad for the mom.

She's celebrating that
she's having a boy,

but on the other hand, her
husband just started a wildfire

that ends up
burning 47,000 acres

of Coronado National Forest.

- How did he possibly create

such a massive explosion
with one bullet?

Because days before,
Dennis had stuffed the box

with something called Tannerite.

It is something
very similar to TNT.

It's an explosive
charge that ignites

when it's hit by a
projectile like a bullet.

- Immediately after accidentally
setting off the fire,

Dennis does the right thing

and turns himself
in to authorities.

While the Sawmill Fire
causes $8 million in damage,

Dennis Dickey is ordered to
pay $220,000 in restitution

and serve five years probation.

- Of course, gender reveals
aren't the only celebrations

that can end in chaos.

A century earlier,
college football fans

found that out the hard way.

- It's Thanksgiving
Day in San Francisco

at Recreation Park Stadium.

It's the game of the
year between rivals,

Cal Berkeley Golden Bears
and the Stanford Cardinals,

and everyone within a 30-mile
radius wants to be there.

- The battle between
Cal and Stanford

is actually one of the oldest
college football rivalries

in the United States.

It dates back to 1892,

and it comes to be
known as the Big Game.

- [Dan] The stands
are packed to the brim

with nearly 20,000 spectators.

But outside, thousands
more are trying to get in.

- So now you have
all these fans,

who can't get into the game,

and they're now looking for
anywhere to catch a glimpse.

- Turns out, they're in luck.

Recreation Park is in an
industrial part of the city

that has a lot of
tall buildings.

From some of these roofs,
you can get a good look

into the stadium and all the
action on the football field.

- [Dan] But the best view
is from the San Francisco

and Pacific Glassworks factory,

just across the street
from the stadium.

- Now it being Thanksgiving Day,

there's really only a skeleton
crew working at this factory.

And regardless, you
can't really do anything

about droves of college students
trying to get on this roof.

- [Dan] About 400 young men
climb onto the roof,

just in time for
the 2:30 PM kickoff.

- You've got scores
of fans up there,

but this metal corrugated
roof held up with wooden slats

is not really designed
to hold hundreds

and hundreds of
cheering football fans.

- About 15 minutes
into the game,

some of these fans start to
hear these little creaks,

these little cracks
in the rooftop,

but they're not really
paying too much mind

because people are cheering.

They're yelling,
they're screaming.

- A few moments pass
and then a loud crack.

The crowd scrambles to find
safety, but it's too late.

- [Dan] As the roof gives
way under the heavy weight,

fans begin plummeting
into the factory.

- Now luckily, the majority
of the people on the roof

fall only a few feet
onto the wooden slats

that are holding up the roof.

But unfortunately, not
everyone is as lucky.

- Because this is a
glassworks company,

they have a giant 500-degree
Fahrenheit furnace

burning inside, down below.

- Surrounding that giant
furnace is this metal grate

that some of the spectators
actually fall onto

and get tangled up in.

And because this metal grate

is only a few feet
away from the furnace,

they are slowly and
agonizingly burning to death.

- [Dan] Some survive the fall,
only to face another horror.

- The fuel pipes in
the factory are severed

and cut open by the falling
debris from the roof,

causing a sprinkler-like
effect of this burning hot oil

to scatter all
around the factory.

- Everyone in the stadium
is so caught up in the game

that it doesn't even
register to them,

the mayhem that's
happening just next door.

- Ultimately, the
event claims 23 lives.

All young men and
hundreds more are injured.

The 1900 Thanksgiving
Day accident goes down

as the deadliest disaster
in American sports history.

- Whether it's almost
choking to death

on the catch of the day,
or coming within an inch

of complete decapitation
via chainsaw,

these are the freak accidents

that are so surprising.

They are truly "Unbelievable."
