Last Madame #3 TI4583 CaptionCube

Officers

What a pleasant surprise

I would like to see your mistress

Unfortunately, she's busy at the moment

Inspector -I would...

What a pleasure

We found him in the patch of jungle behind the Kuan Yin temple

What was left of him

The wild dogs found him first

That's the Celestial Kings' territory

I heard he had a fight with the Kings last week

I heard that too

But Ah Yat was poisoned

I may be new here,

but I know the local gangs prefer their fists

They see poison as weak,

womanly

I didn't know wild dogs used poison

The newspapers are going to have a field day

The dogs left a hand

It was discoloured

You are new to the city, Inspector

Otherwise, you would know that we are in Sam Hap Wui's territory

Seh's men protect us

Why would we attack his nephew?

I was told Ah Yat was throwing his weight around

Rumour has it...

he roughed up one of your girls

Mr Yat was the perfect gentleman

Gentleman?

From what I've heard,

that must have been a new experience for him

There are many in Chinatown who would kill over a stray insult

But in our business, Inspector,

we can't afford to be so reckless

You may be right

Seems like I will have no shortage of suspects

I hope we've been helpful

When I told Master Seh about his nephew's death,

he reminded me of another attack on one of his men years ago

He was found by the river...

in pieces

That was in the papers for months

That's Seh's man?

The triads take care of their own

Whoever's involved will pay dearly,

more so if the police are not the first to find them

Then I most certainly hope that you'll find them,

Inspector Mak

Goodnight

Madame

I'm tired. Goodnight

When I told Master Sehabout his nephew's death,

he reminded me of another attackon one of his men years ago

He was found by the river...

in pieces

- I'm as surprised as you are - Yeah, no, I didn't expect it

Like, when did you fly in?

This morning? -Yeah

What happened to your leg?

Oh, it's fine. Nothing happened

No, it's fine

It's fine

Guo Wen?

Stop working for a moment

I want to introduce you

Okay

- I mean, we should probably go check it out - No, it's nothing

- You sure? - Yeah, it's a small thing

Harry, this is Guo Wen -Hi

He's the historian who's been helping me value the contents of this place

Hi

Harry

I'd say "nice to meet you",

but I'm a little upset my fiancée dumped me in Hong Kong...

to go gallivanting with a...

handsome historian

Chi Ling's been really professional, and so have I

Please ignore him

He thinks he's funny

Oh, my little ice queen

How I've missed you

Do you like this cheongsam?

We found it in the house

It's nice, no?

I like it, but...

it's a little plain

I think you need something to...

match this

Oh, babe

Thank you -Come on, try it on

Wow

Looks good

Why don't you two... talk for a bit,

and I'll go change, yeah?

Okay

So, historian, huh?

Does it pay well?

- It's not why I do it - It's not why you do it?

Come on, don't you guys dig up antiques from dumps like this...

and sell them for millions?

You're thinking about an auction house

I'm just here to help Chi Ling catalogue anything of historical value that...

a museum might find interesting

And do museums pay well for such... artefacts?

I'm not a salesman

Owners usually donate them

Donate them?

I thought she said you were valuing these things for sale

Well, actually... -Harry

Are you okay?

What's wrong? -I'm just really hungry

Take me out to lunch? -Yeah

Guo Wen, you can work here alone, right?

I thought you didn't trust me in the house on my own

He's harmless

I mean, he said he's not in it for the money, right?

What was your name again?

Guo Wen -Oh, Guo Wu

Listen, I gotta show you this place. It is fantastic, okay?

You're gonna love it -Okay

Hon, you okay? -Yeah

You okay? -Yeah

Hey, are you free to meet?

11 years

11 years...

since Ah Tou died,

and his killer...

still walks free

And now it's Ah Yat

I promised my sister...

I would let her watch...

as we feed Ah Yat's killer...

to the dogs!

But first,

we must find them!

Ah Yat fought with the Celestial Kings and the Red Sons

And those damn pimps...

The new inspector is investigating

James is bringing him here today

That useless westerner!

We fed him so much money,

and then he got himself off the case

He'd better let us know who this new fella is...

and what he knows about...

Come in

Inspector Mak

Welcome

Please take a seat

Where is Inspector James?

CI Russell has been reassigned

I'll be taking over all his cases

Just the case I was hoping to speak to you about

The victim was your son, correct?

I am sorry

Sorry?

Your "sorry" won't bring him justice

Justice?

I've been told your idea of justice is...

flexible

Tell me, Master Seh -

how did you get these police photographs?

They're evidence,

not to be shared with civilians

Was CI Russell aware you had them?

Or...

did he give them to you?

Can I ask you something, Inspector Mak?

My men found this last week...

just...

lying in the street

As a police officer,

I'm sure you know what to do with lost money, right?

Your integrity is heartwarming, Master Seh

But it is best you report it at the station

Keep it above board

CI Russell ran into some trouble with certain...

unclaimed money

I would not want either of us to be accused of bribery

That will not happen, Inspector Mak

I know how honourable you police are

Now,

it's my turn to ask you something

Since you have our crime photographs,

perhaps you know who may have removed this unusual ring?

What does this have to do with Ah Yat?

The discolouration of Ah Yat's skin in death was similar to that of Ah Tou's

See?

Poison, again

But Ah Tou died... -11 years ago

Perhaps this is the chance for the justice you say you deserve

I will do everything in my power...

to solve Ah Tou's murder

For a start, I'll need the evidence

This ring was found beside Ah Tou's body

It is our key evidence

If we find it,

you will be the first person I call, Inspector Mak

I'll be expecting you at the station to report that money, Master Seh

Good day

Follow him

If he's as good as what they say,

he'll find the killer

Then we will show him real justice,

which isn't some Caucasian judge in a wig

And the House of Phoenix...

That woman loves a fight,

but she was quiet as a mouse...

after Ah Yat beat her girl

Find out what she's hiding

Cheers

I don't understand why you don't just pay somebody to deal with this house

And this Guo Min guy, he doesn't check out

He's a hack. He's just wasting your time

Guo Wen has actually been pretty helpful since I hurt my leg

And plus, he's not charging me anything

He's not charging you anything because he has a hidden agenda

Get rid of him

Hire a proper valuer

Unless, I don't know, you have a hidden agenda yourself

What's that supposed to mean?

Maybe you're just hung up on your past

Look, remember that time you got into a fight with your mum...

because she wouldn't answer your questions,

and then she passed away?

This has nothing to do with that

Look -

you didn't have to come here, okay?

Even the real estate agent said so

I think that you came here because you are looking for something,

even if you don't know what it is

I came here because I needed a break

Come on, you don't think I know you?

You haven't had a break since the day I met you

So what's so special about this place that you wanted to bring me?

Harry

Oh, I didn't pick it. She did

Hey, how are you? -Good

This is my fiancée, Chi Ling

Hi, I'm Emily -Hi

Nice to meet you -Please come, sit

So, are you two ready to sell?

You like what you see, handsome?

Sir

Thank you for agreeing to see me

Did I have a choice?

I've been told you're one of the most experienced girls around here

You've been around longer than most

I need your expert advice

You mean I'm one of the few who haven't died of syphilis

Anyway, if this is about Ah Yat, you're wasting your breath

I don't know anything

We know he's visited your brothel

Yes, but he likes younger flesh

Men like that can't appreciate a sophisticated woman like me

What about this?

Never seen it before

What is it?

It was found near a body...

chopped up by the river

I thought Ah Yat was killed by dogs

This is for an older case

Sorry, I can't help you

You know what this is about

You were a working girl back then

When Ah Tou was found,

his skin mottled from poison,

his eyes gouged out...

How can you feel safe...

knowing the one who did it is still out there?

Then you didn't know Ah Tou

Yes,

this city will never be safe for girls like me,

but...

it is better off without him

Does the House of Phoenix feel the same?

You should be looking for the jeweller who made this

No working girl would want to mess with a triad

Well, the triads disagree

Sam Hap Wui tells me Fung Lan fiercely defends her girls

And Ah Yat attacked one

And did you investigate him already?

If you're looking for a murderer, Inspector, go back to your boss

Seh has blood on his hands

They all do

And it's our blood

You police don't ask questions when a girl like me turns up dead,

do you?

Most of it is done

You just need to add photos and descriptions of the artefacts to the appendix

Then we can apply to the Historical Society...

and make the House of Phoenix a heritage building

Will they contact the property owner? -Yes

They will need to verify the claims

If all goes well,

the owner will only be able to sell...

if the buyer adheres to the strict guidelines for heritage sites,

which will keep the greedy developers away

Yeah, that's...

that's great

I think we have a good chance

This house is full of valuable insights into the lives of women...

and how they've been largely forgotten by history

Just leave this with me, Gerald

Thanks a lot

Good luck

That house is a gem

It would be a shame if it's just sold off to the highest bidder

All the best

Thanks

You know where to find me, handsome

Sir

Get me a list of jewellers that service the brothels

Yes, sir

You're having a nightmare again

Always had them

I'll have Ah Yoke get you some opium. It'll calm your sleep

Just a little

I'd rather have the nightmares

Ah Yat is dead

How?

Wild dogs

He was drunk,

and he stumbled into the forest

He can't hurt you now

There'll be another

There always is

Just when you think you're safe,

that no one has a reason to hurt you...

- You are safe - You can't promise that!

Everyone knows Ah Yat was here,

that he attacked me

They will suspect...

Me?

I have an alibi

I was here the evening he was killed

Ah Yoke!

Hey, don't cheat -Madame

Madame

Is my bird's nest ready?

I'll go and prepare it now

Thank you -Soup

Please bring it up to my room when it's done

Yes, Madame

I'm having a headache. I do not want to be disturbed

Ah Yoke made me bird's nest, and then I retired to my room

All the girls saw it

It doesn't matter

This will dredge up the past

Master Seh will suspect, and you know he owns all the police

Yes

That old British policeman was in his pockets,

but he was stupid

This...

this Mak, he is sharper

But...

any man can be outsmarted

Look -

we'll just keep our heads low, and it will pass

You think you're invincible

Have you ever thought about what would happen to us...

when your luck runs out?

Good chance?

All right, so I'll... Yeah, okay

Hey

Why didn't you tell me we were meeting a real estate agent?

Because you said you were busy. I figured I'd take care of it for you

- You know, I thought you'd be happy - You're rushing me

- And it's my house - Which you are looking to sell

I don't understand why you're getting so upset

You're right

I am sorry

I just don't like surprises

I want to get back to our life,

our wedding, yeah?

Which I think will be amazing...

because she said she could get $18 million for the place

Then we can have a wedding to rival those crazy rich Asians, yeah?

Float down the altar?

Okay

Let's celebrate

You go back to the hotel first

I just need to pick something up from the house, okay?

All right, I'll come with you -No

It's fine. I'll see you later, okay?

Hello

Thank you for agreeing to meet me here

The police make my usual clients...

nervous

No offence

None taken

Do you know what it is?

Oh, yes

We don't get many orders for these

There aren't many places or girls that know how to use them

Go on

Well...

They are...

instruments of pleasure,

used in the art of love

This part here...

goes over a man's...

you know

Thank you

You're the first person who hasn't pretended to not know what it is

You know it, then?

Must be the adventurous type, eh? Inspector?

May I?

Yes, just as I thought

The snake design, the choice of stones...

This was made for an establishment known as the Peony Palace

I don't know it

Where is it?

Closed, years ago

Her madame ordered it specially...

in the year 1928,

I think

1928?

How can you be so sure?

It was the year of the gruesome murder

You know, the one with the dismembered body?

My wife and I were celebrating our 25th anniversary...

when we saw all the people at the river and the police bringing the body back

Soon after, the Peony closed

Her mistress returned to China,

leaving behind her account unpaid, I must add

Thank you, Mr Samy

You've been most helpful

If you have further questions,

you should speak to Madame Fung Lan from the House of Phoenix

Her most experienced girl is very adept at its use

I've only heard, of course

Thank you

I will certainly pay them a visit

That would be fine

Yeah, she'll be mad, but...

she's got a fiancé

She'll fly back to Hong Kong,

live her rich life

It'll be fine

I can't seem to...

Can you help me with this?

I can't do this

She's gonna hate me

Oh no...

Hey

Hi

You're looking for Chi Ling?

Yes, is she here?

No, she's not, but...

I've brought the listing paperwork for the sale

The sale?

Sorry, I can't stay

Could you just ask her to sign this for me?

And then we can start advertising

Thanks

Do you think any of your girls saw me come in?

They're all in their rooms

Though I don't know why I took the risk

You reek of trouble

Don't be a shrew

I came to warn you

The new police inspector, Mak,

is sniffing around about the snake ring to do with Ah Tou's death

And what has that got to do with me?

How many girls do you know can use one of those?

It won't be long before he comes to question you

And even if he doesn't come,

Seh will

He doesn't care who pays the price for Ah Yat and Ah Tou...

as long as it involves plenty of blood

You'd better get your story straight

You seem to know a great deal about what Seh is thinking

Did he send you?

I was a fool trying to help

Wait

I haven't seen you in years

Why are you helping me now?

I had a daughter...

at the Peony Palace before you came

Where is she now?

I looked...

for years

But maybe it's better not to know

The last time I saw her,

she was just starting to walk

Then he took her

Ah Tou

You know what he was...

to any child or woman cursed enough to cross his path

He liked his girls broken

I still pray that she's dead...

so maybe she didn't suffer

No

He deserved what he got

His death was justice

I don't care if you're involved or not

Just be ready when they come for you

Madame

What do we do now?

We move first

Guo Wen?

Are you there?

Guo Wen?

Hello?

Oh, god

You scared me

Did you get my messages? I tried calling

I'm done

I was gonna tell you in person

You keep trying to pretend that you don't care about your great-grandmother,

that you're disgusted by her, that you're nothing alike

But at least she was honest about selling herself for money

What's your excuse?

You have until tomorrow

Then the movers are coming to clear this all away

You know,

I've been killing myself...

trying to figure out a way to tell you this...

because I know it's gonna kill you

What is that?

Fung Lan didn't start a family after she left the House of Phoenix

Whoever told you that lied

I did the maths, all the way back three generations

Even if she was a bit older or younger than the average age,

the child would've been born in...

In the brothel

Yes

Your grandmother

Who's there?

Inspector Mak, did you want something?

No

Madame thought you might need a rest...

after all that walking

Your madame is very kind

Tell her I'll visit her soon

Goodnight
