"Wizards of Baking" has returned!
Every year, millions of Potter fans journey to Leavesden
to walk amongst the breathtaking original sets.
But eager Muggles aren't the studio's only visitors,
because we've invited the world's finest
- bakers here, too. - [man #1] That's cool.
- [woman #1] What in the world? - Do you need a hand?
This season, eight brand-new teams will take part in
a most extraordinary competition...
[cheering]
for the coveted Wizards of Baking Cup.
You can't come to Hogwarts and not do magic.
They'll conjure up all sorts of spellbinding, sweet creations
[ribbit]
Inspired by the world of "Harry Potter."
Then they'll present them to our formidable
"Ministers of Baking,"
a top chef all-star whose very mantra is to
cook with love, Chef Carla Hall,
and an acclaimed chef who has worked in
Michelin-star kitchens around the world,
- Chef Jozef Youssef. - Yes.
There we go!
As well as some very special guests.
This is what I've waited 20 years for.
Guiding us are two chaps who are no strangers to Hogwarts.
Fred and George Weasley themselves.
- Ready, Fred? - Ready, George?
James and Oliver Phelps.
- Well, isn't the Food Network amazing? - [cheering]
So, let the magic and the baking begin.
- [whoosh] - ["Hedwig's Theme" by John Williams plays]
[orchestral music plays]
- Wow. - [excited murmuring]
[Caitlin] Oh, my God.
We are literally in the Great Hall.
This is like a dream come true.
I'm a huge fan of the books and the movies.
Oh my God. Oh my gosh.
I can't believe that we are here.
- [overlapping excitement] - Look, look, look.
[man] Whoa.
I don't even know where to look.
[woman #1] Dude, the trophy has Jordan and Zoe's name on it.
[woman #2] No way!
[whimsical music plays]
OK now, play it cool.
- Attention, bakers! - [cheering]
Come on, come down, come down, come down, come down.
When James and Oliver Phelps, the Weasley twins themselves,
came in, they snuck in so quiet for such tall boys.
- I know. - We couldn't hear them.
[Priya] I don't think I'm normally a very starstruck person,
but I kind of felt a bit starstruck.
They're like "Harry Potter" royalty.
You've made it!
Welcome to "Wizards of Baking" chapter two.
- [cheering] - [clapping]
And a competition grander than even the Quidditch World Cup.
- I'm James. - And I'm Oliver.
And if you can't tell us apart, just think,
I'm the handsome one.
[laughing]
So, of course, this is the Great Hall.
And it's been the scene of some truly unforgettable moments...
The Yule Ball,
Dumbledore's iconic speeches...
Welcome, welcome to another year at Hogwarts!
[James] And most impressive of all...
Fred and George's fireworks display.
- [laughing] - Ready when you are.
- Whoo! - [popping, blasting]
- [roar] - [whoosh]
[laughing]
If the "Harry Potter" stories taught us anything,
it's that success is rarely achieved alone.
It requires teamwork, cooperation,
and normally, Hermione telling everyone what to do.
Naturally.
[Oliver] So for this competition, you've been placed into pairs
based on your complementary skills.
- So, you ready to get started? - [all] Yes.
Good, because it's time for your first challenge.
Each team will be assigned a Hogwarts house to use
as the inspiration for your first showpiece.
[James] Now, there are eight teams, but only four houses.
That means that you'll be facing off
- in four head-to-head duels. - What?
The winning team in each duel will live to bake another day.
The losing team could be heading home
before the Fat Lady sings.
[laughing]
But which houses will you get? Jenny and Alex,
Heather and Kate, could you step forward?
Oh my goodness.
So, it wouldn't feel right for us to assign you guys a house.
So, we asked a special friend to do the honors.
The suspense is killing me.
[Sorting Hat] Hmm, difficult.
Very difficult. Plenty of courage, I see.
[Kate] Oh my gosh. It's the Sorting Hat.
I think the Sorting Ceremony is so epic because it's one of
the first things that happens when the students get
to Hogwarts, and it's the first thing that's happening to us
here in the competition, and so it really feels like
our entrance into the "Harry Potter" world.
[Sorting Hat] There's talent. Oh, yes.
- But where to put you? - Not Slytherin.
[Sorting Hat] Better be... Gryffindor!
[cheering]
So, Gryffindor students are known for their courage,
bravery, and determination. So, do keep that in mind.
- OK. - OK.
[James] But before we head off to the kitchen,
here are a few rules.
The showpieces need to include a mouth-watering
tasting element.
[Oliver] And they also need to feature one effect.
And that has to be inspired by the element that your house
- is famous for. - [James] For Gryffindor, that is,
of course, fire.
- Yeah, yeah. - It's gonna be so cool.
And in six hours, you're gonna bring your creations
- back here to be judged. - [all] Yes, [indistinct].
Good luck, and, I've been waiting ages to say this,
let the baking begin!
- [cheering] - [clapping]
- [giggling] - [Heather] Oh my god.
- [train whistle blows] - [suspenseful music plays]
- Oh my. - [Heather] This is so cool.
- Do you see...? - Oh, the Sorting Hat.
-[Jenny] Loot at... -[laughing]
- Oh, this is nice. - Oh, my god.
- Oh, my god. - Whoa.
[Alex] It's a dream. Look at that.
[Jenny] Oh my god. I can't believe it.
- Look at Dobby. - Oh my god, I love Dobby.
- Me too. - [overlapping chatter]
[Jenny] OK, OK, OK.
When you think Gryffindor, what are you thinking?
- Courage, passion. - Yeah.
We should go with Hagrid. I love Hagrid.
- Oh, my god. - Yeah, yeah, yeah.
He's with Harry right from the very beginning, isn't he?
What scene are we gonna use for Hagrid?
We should go with, uh, baby Norbert, maybe?
- [Jenny] He's setting fire to it. - [Alex] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- Setting fire to the beard. - Let's go with that.
- Perfect. - Yeah.
- [hiccup] - Ooh.
Ooh.
Whoa!
He'll have to be trained up a bit, of course.
- Yeah? - So we've got Hagrid...
- Mm-hmm. - [Jenny]...holding baby Norbert...
- [Alex] There you go. - [Jenny]...within his oven gloves.
[Alex] Yeah. I'm a chocolatier,
so I think I should be doing the egg,
- also the chocolate flames. - Oh my god.
Are you ready? Are you ready?
[Alex] Let's do this. We got this.
Let's just go.
Don't be fooled by her bubbly personality.
Self-taught cake artist Jenny is a force to be reckoned with,
with an impressive cake resume and a knack for hyperrealism.
Hoping to mix up the competition
with his chocolatier skills, Chef Alex pairs
innovative techniques with flavors that are sure
to surprise and excite.
[Jenny] I think we both know that we've got some crazy skills.
Your chocolate work is just phenomenal.
[Alex] What about your cake skills?
- [Alex] Oh, come on. - [Jenny] Yeah, thank you.
I'm not very good at compliments, but OK.
Um, OK, well, the Gryffindor is represented
- by the lion. - [Heather] Yes.
[Kate] Our showpiece is inspired by the iconic elements
of Gryffindor. I think making sort of the lion
- represent the fire. - [Heather] I love it.
And I think we have to include the sword, right?
[Kate] Godric's sword, yeah.
[Heather] And I always think of, like, Hermione.
She's carrying books all the time.
[Kate] When I think of the Gryffindors, I think
they're always in their robes and the scarf.
- [cheering] - Gryffindor!
We're the newbies. We've got to make a big impact
- right out of the gate. - Right.
It's really surreal being here.
A little overwhelming.
We haven't ever done any of this before,
- so it's all new for us. - [Heather] Like Kate, I haven't competed
in a competition of this magnitude.
But we got something up our sleeves.
Yes.
I will soak this one in the microwave so it is faster.
[Jenny] Alex is making our tasting element.
He's the king of flavors, and the tasting element will be
hidden underneath a chocolate egg.
This is my first TV show, so I'm really excited.
I wanted to replicate Norbert's egg as real as possible.
I'm just spraying some bronze cacao butter
so it looks more realistic.
For me, chocolate, it's my life.
I really love how to create new things and making
these weird ideas that I have in my mind.
How does it look?
- [Jenny] That's looking gorgeous. - [Alex] Yeah, right?
I'm from Cuernavaca, Morelos.
It is a little town next to the capital in Mexico.
I am kind of a bohemian. I love writing poetry.
- I play the guitar. - [Jenny] Really?
I used to have a band, yeah.
I've been playing the horn now for nearly 40 years.
Are you kidding me?
- We should have a band. - [laughing]
- So Jenny... - [Jenny] Hmm?
how big of a fan of "Harry Potter" are you?
- I'm actually obsessed. - [Alex] OK.
[Jenny] Obviously, I've read all the books numerous times.
- [Alex] OK. - [Jenny] I've seen all the films.
- [Alex] OK. - [Jenny] I've listened to the audio books.
[Jenny] I have the outfits. I have the wands.
We have the costumes. I have the jewelry.
- Ooh. - Oh, yeah.
[Oliver] OK, bakers.
So one house has been allocated, three to go.
Molly and Priya, Angel and Rui, you're next.
I don't want to get Slytherin. I'm worried about that.
- I really don't like snakes. - [laughing]
[Sorting Hat] Ah, right then.
- [Sorting Hat] Hufflepuff. - Hey.
[James] Hufflepuffs.
The Hufflepuff house element is earth, so you need to
keep that in mind for your first showpiece.
Right, guys, what are you waiting for?
Your time's already started. Come on.
You've got six hours. Go, go, go!
[clapping]
[whimsical music plays]
- Wow. - Oh my God.
- [Molly] Oh, my. - [Priya] Wow.
- Oh, my gosh. - Excited to cook.
- Hi. - [Molly] I've never baked anywhere like this before.
- This is incredible. - [Priya] Amazing.
- [Molly] So... - What do you think?
So, we need to do something that's really big.
- Yep. - How about if we do a forest scene?
- A forest? - Yeah.
I like that. I like the garden.
I like the, like, soil. What I am good at is animals.
I think that should definitely be carved cake, because that
kind of is my specialty. So the badger's gonna be cake.
We need something on the top, like...
Why don't we do the greenhouse classroom on top?
How do we make it look like glass, though?
We could do a little sugar work.
[Molly] The cake is mainly gonna have, like, three main focal points.
It's gonna have the badger, the watering can,
and then we've got the Professor Sprout's
greenhouse on the top, because Professor Sprout's
- a Hufflepuff. - [Priya] We'll have mushrooms.
And snails and just every element of a perfect
enchanted forest scene.
I'm also a little bit concerned with the greenhouse on top.
Like, we've got to go for it.
A renowned master of chocolate, Canada's Priya,
arrives onto the scene after earning global recognition
for her chocolate artistry.
The daughter of a celebrated English comedian
and a showgirl, Molly always makes an entrance.
She sculpts lifelike cakes that never fail to impress.
Molly and Priya are hungry to rewrite the rulebook
- for all "Wizards of Baking." - Oh, hello.
We've realized we have similar tastes, similar style.
[Priya] We both run our own businesses.
[Molly] We also are, like, incredibly strong,
independent women, and we are here to win.
[whirring]
Oh, wow.
[Priya] The first thing I'm doing is the greenhouse on the top
made of isomalt.
I've already set all of my bars to create the shapes
for the front, back, sides, and top of the greenhouse.
Wow.
I honestly think it looks fantastic.
- [Molly] Yeah. - It is striking,
just clear as glass.
So I'm putting the pieces together, very carefully
warming the edges.
- [clunking] - [gasps]
OK.
And the isomalt is cracking.
- It's so fragile. - [Molly] Priya, no.
It's the focal point. It's the top of the piece.
Terrifying.
[sighs]
The gazebo has had an accident, but it's OK.
- We're gonna keep going. - [Molly] You're fine.
Just stick it back together
[Priya] On this one?
Like, I've got some gaps here.
- [Molly] I like the crack. - [Priya] You do?
Yeah, we're gonna add a vine to it.
I'm adding the stained glass to the isomalt.
I drew the stained-glass design.
I'm just gonna stick it on with a bit of piping gel.
We had a crack in the isomalt, but then we realized the real
Professor Sprout's greenhouse has got cracks in it
and great big vines growing through it.
So we're just making it a design feature.
So if anything, it's gonna look even better.
- [Molly] Look, Priya. - [Priya] Yeah, Molly.
So good.
[Angel] I am so ready to do this challenge.
Angel is definitely a person with good energy.
I can feel your vibes.
[Angel] We have a very different personality,
but it's a good complement.
Known as a culinary mad scientist, molecular gastronomy
specialist, Chef Rui creates edible experiments that dazzle
and delight, packed with copious amounts of flavor
in every single bite.
Chile-born and Colorado-based Angel is a creative force...
whose sculpted cakes
and clever problem-solving skills are equal parts
art and ingenuity.
[whimsical music plays]
I think I'm a Hufflepuff because I am very connected
to the earth. My family loves to go camping.
We go to fishing and skiing and everything that involves
- to be outside. - Oh, I hate camping!
It's so uncomfortable. There's no...
There's no mattress, there's no air conditioner,
there's no heater there. It's so uncomfortable.
You're so bougie.
We have our armature for our garden box.
Our element, it's earth.
So we really want to make the mandrake.
[crying]
Got it, and now,
we dunk it down into the other pot and pour
a little sprinkling of soil to keep him warm.
- [crying] - [thud]
[Angel] In our garden box, we're gonna have a big mandrake.
We're gonna have dirt inside made of cocoa crumble.
And then we're gonna have three little baby mandrakes.
So this is a mandrake.
I'm gonna be carving this out of cake.
And this is the mouth.
And it's gonna be moving and screaming...
[laughing]
Hello. How are you?
I have to make sure it's not too heavy, so it actually goes
up and down.
That's why I'm using rice cereal, because that's
the lightest thing I can use, and modeling chocolate on top.
I'm adding these roots to give it a little bit more height.
I'm loving him.
Beautiful.
[Oliver] Jujhar and Katie,
Marj and Sarah, front and center, please.
- Mm. - Oh, boy.
So only two houses left, Slytherin and Ravenclaw.
[Sorting Hat] Ha,
I know just what to do with you.
Slytherin!
- Oh my gosh. - Yes.
Slytherin.
Slytherins are known for their pride,
ambition, and cunning.
Their house element is the suitably slippery...
substance of water.
So you need to keep that in mind for your creations.
Guys, time to slither off to the kitchen.
Good luck.
- Yay, Slytherin. - Slytherin.
[Katie] We're very ambitious.
We're ready to give it everything that we have.
We have to win.
I want to win, but we have to win.
[ethereal sounds]
- Wow. - What just happened?
- [Jujhar] Oh, my god. - Oh, my god,
we just went through the floo network.
- Oh, my god. - [Marj] I'll try to not freak out.
I might cry. I get a little anxious.
A little bad under pressure, so, you know.
[Sarah] It's OK. You'll have me.
I'll be your personal cheerleader.
- Yeah? - Yeah, we'll be good.
[Jujhar] Hi, guys.
So I've competed on five baking shows, and I won three.
I'm so glad you're my teammate because I've never competed
on a TV show before. I'm a chocolatier.
I've been asked to be on competitions all the time,
and I'm like, "No, I don't do TV.
That's not for me." When they were like,
"It's Harry Potter," and I was like, "Today.
I'll go there today." Lucky for us, I'm a 4.0 student,
- and I'm here to win. - You want to know a fun fact?
- Mm-hmm. - I was also a 4.0 student.
- [chuckles] - [clap]
We've got to create something really epic.
- Could we do, like, Voldemort? - Why not?
- Right. - All right.
So, you know what I'm thinking?
So, we have to integrate water.
Oh, the scene, you know, when the water is spinning
- in the end. - In the Ministry of Magic?
[Katie] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- [rushing] - [whistle]
- [groans] - [splashing]
- [gargling] - [grunts]
[water whooshing]
[Jujhar] So, we can do, like, a cascading,
like, gravity-defying isomalt.
[Katie] This is going to be really, really challenging,
- because of the weight. - Let's get started.
What is something that is so Slytherin it's unmistakable?
So, we have to use water.
When I think water, I think of the Chamber of Secrets.
Maybe we'll do, like, a multi-level floor view.
Like, you start at the top in the hallway of Hogwarts
where it's, like, the wall that has the warning
of, like, "The heir... beware," right?
And then maybe, like, as you go downward,
there's the snake door
that you have to speak in Parseltongue to open.
And then below that, it could be, like,
the Chamber of Secrets.
It's like the big, cavernous crypt.
Perfect. Yes.
[Marj] Our show piece consists of three tiers.
The middle tier will have stalagmites and stalactites
added on either side of the door.
The entrance walkway will be surrounded by water and lead up
to a cavern with a huge carving of Salazar Slytherin's face.
Emerging from the entrance of the wall is a large Basilisk.
On the walkway lies the diary of Tom Riddle.
Rip it off like a Band-Aid. Wow.
Marj, this has been crazy so far, right?
Like, I feel like we just met each other.
Yeah, I know, we actually did just meet each other.
Now we have to force ourselves to work together
with our different styles.
I am obsessed with pro-wrestling.
That is my thing. Going to Comic-Con.
And I love cosplay. I'm not really girly,
I would say, I've always been a tomboy.
People look at me and they always tell me
they're so intimidated by me.
[Sarah] When I first saw you, I thought,
"Maybe she'll hate me. I don't know,"
but honestly, you're the sweetest person.
I think we're pretty polar opposites.
When I'm not baking, I love spending time with my two cats
at home. I love gardening,
everything to do with flowers.
Sarah's like a princess, like a...
[laughing]
All right, yeah, this is lining up so good.
The top tier of our showpiece is made out of dark chocolate
that I cast into a silicone mold.
I'm just giving it a little hair-dry.
That looks so cool.
I'm doing a lot of cocoa butter spraying
to give some dimension.
I then go back with a really fine brush and red cocoa butter
to hand-paint the ominous message.
- We're good, we're good. - [Marj] Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
[Katie] I am a chocolatier.
I don't usually work with rice cereal, but this is fun,
learning new mediums.
[Jujhar] This is where the tasting cake is gonna go.
So build this guy up to here and then leave the spots
- for cake, OK? - [Katie] Perfect.
[Jujhar] OK. And what about yay-high for the cake?
- [Katie] Very technical. - [Jujhar] Yay-high.
[Katie] Yay-high.
I am now a cake artist.
[Jujhar] It is looking a little bit messy right now, but we will
save time to clean it up. But it's looking good.
[Katie] Yep.
Best for last.
Well, with only two teams left and one house to go,
- any guesses? - Ravenclaw.
- That is right. - [Caitlin] Yay.
Who knew?
[Oliver] Caitlin, Jaleesa, Andy, and Stefan.
Ravenclaws are known for their wit,
their wisdom, and their learning.
- And the house element is air. - So, come on, then.
Get cracking. Off you pop.
Good luck, guys.
This witch is very, very clear.
That trophy needs to say, "Caitlin and Jaleesa,
- season two winners." - I actually have previously
competed with Jaleesa before.
I did beat her... seeing if I could do it for a second time.
[dramatic music plays]
[Andy] Oh my God.
[Stefan] What?
- Come on, come on, come on. - [Andy] That's crazy.
- [Andy] Whoa, this is our station. - [Caitlin] Oh, my god, OK.
I think, "Raven." Raven needs to be,
- like, the main part of it. - [Stefan] Yeah.
Because I know you're good with, like, chocolate and stuff like that.
You think you could do, like...?
I could do some chocolate wings.
[Andy] Yeah, let's do some chocolate feathers.
Yeah, yeah.
If we do, like, maybe, like, an open book,
we still have to include, I think, like,
a really important part of Ravenclaw, like,
part of the movies, the diadem.
[Stefan] Then we could maybe create that with sugar.
[Andy] We can kind of set it on, like, a pillow.
[Stefan] Could that be my entremet, then?
[Andy] Yeah, so the entremet would be the pillow.
I like that. We need to do something really theatrical.
It's actually my motto for life, is to make it magical.
And I try to make it magical every day, and that's whether
it's with my desserts, whether it's DJing, whether it
is having a gospel night with my amazing wife,
who is a powerful singer.
- [Stefan] What about the wings? - The wings.
- That's ambitious. - [Stefan] Yeah.
[Andy] I am a cake artist.
I definitely had to convince my parents to let me go
to culinary school, and they were like, "Yeah, I mean,
as long as, you know, you pay, and then you can go."
So, you know, I'm in debt, but we're good.
[Stefan] ] Taking a risk, but I think it's cool.
A little bit more than we need to, but I think that it's
- the first episode. - Honestly, let's go for it.
So we have to do air. So something with, like...
What if we did a bird actually flying?
- Yes. - Love that.
- [clap] - OK.
From Maryland, mum of two, Caitlin, is bringing
her enthusiasm and passion for bold cake designs
with her into the kitchen.
New Jersey mum of two, Jaleesa, enters the competition
equally determined to take home the trophy.
Both of these strong-minded bakers have their eyes focused
on the prize.
[Caitlin] You know, we're both very competitive.
I'm very good at what I do.
I've won two competitions before.
[Jaleesa] I competed on Spring Baking Championship, won that.
We're not going into this very cocky and big-headed, like,
"Oh, yeah, I'm really good at what... "
It's like, yes, we're good at what we do, but we're also...
- We can back it up. - Yeah.
You know how when they cast a spell, the gust that kind of
shows on the outside of the wand?
- Yeah, yeah, yeah. - I want to somehow try to
incorporate, like, some movement.
So should we do, like, Wingardium Leviosa?
Yes, yes, like Hermione, the way she's, like,
- trying to pronounce it. - It's Levi-O-sa, not Levio-SA.
You do it, then, if you're so clever.
Go on, go on.
[students repeating] Wingardium Leviosa.
Wingardium Leviosa.
What if one of the books is open and that's where
the magic comes out, -And that's how the gust comes out?
- I like that. - [Caitlin] OK, so we're doing a table and books.
[Jaleesa] Our tasting element will be inside of the books.
Also, we're gonna have a homework scroll that says
the Wingardium Leviosa spell.
[Caitlin] And then the raven on top is our showstopper.
[playful vocalizations]
I had no idea how competitive I was,
until I started competing.
I just thought, like, "Oh it's a friendly competition,
I'm gonna, like, try my best, and, like, yeah."
And then it was like, no, I'm elbowing people, and I'm a track star,
and I will run to grab what I want, and I will take
the last one and not care, because I want to win.
The whole point of a competition is to win.
[whimsical music plays]
- Whoa. - Whoa.
Isn't the Food Network amazing?
[Sarah] Oh, my god.
So remember, teams, you all began 30 minutes apart,
so some of you will finish before others.
Oh.
Gryffindor teams, you started first, so you'll be
the first to step up and present to the judges.
- OK. - Yeah.
[Oliver] Hufflepuff teams, you will present yours
30 minutes later. Slytherin will be next.
- And then, finally, Ravenclaw. - [cheering]
Awesome.
- [Heather] Looking good? - That looks really good.
Start adding the dry and the...
So, for my bit, when I make baby Norbert, I've got
this really cool technique.
I'm thinking, I'm gonna make his wings, but I'm gonna
make them out of edible skin.
What I'm gonna be doing is painting an underlayer of these
wafer-paper sheets.
So, I'm just giving this a base coat of gelatin.
And then when this gelatin dries,
it's gonna look like skin.
So, what I will do is sandwich his fingers
inside two layers of paper.
And then what that's gonna do is give the wing structure,
so it'll look like the bone underneath the skin,
and I'll be airbrushing it and dusting it and making it
look even more realistic.
- Ooh. - It feels good to be cooking.
[Kate] For the tasting element, we'll be making
a buttermilk cake with a rhubarb and blood-orange compote filling,
and it will be right behind the eyes
in the lion's forehead.
So, I have our blood-orange puree.
I'm gonna combine that with a little sugar,
our rhubarb, cook that down in a compote.
I'm going a little bit savory with my rhubarb,
so there could be a little bit of an error
in balance between that salty and that sweet.
You know, I get in my head, and I get really, you know,
I'm nervous, and I'm like, "What am I doing?"
It's intimidating.
I mean, the whole thing is terrifying.
I live in Nashville, Tennessee,
and I'm the executive pastry chef at a hotel.
I'm a little bit whimsical. I like to have fun.
I'm a little bit cheeky.
[thunk]
So, I think that that translates into my desserts.
[Heather] I'm from Michigan. Detroit Lions.
Love.
I have owned my own bakery for 12 years, and we always did
these really big window displays.
It took me a long time to find my own stride,
and in my 40s now, it's time. Look out, world.
I am going to probably work on the lion now.
- [Kate] OK. - [Heather] All right.
[Heather] Let's get it going.
Now I'm starting to shape the mane so we can give it
a lot of power and strength, like Gryffindor house deserves.
[Kate] I think it looks really good, you're really fast at this.
[Heather] I'm so happy with it.
Bigger is better, and more is more.
Absolutely.
[James] We're back for Chapter Two, back in our lovely kitchen.
16 bakers at once in the kitchen, all working
really, really hard. How exciting is that?
I know. Over the course of this season,
we're gonna see challenges which are tougher than before.
We're gonna push these bakers as far as they can possibly go.
I can't wait to see what the judges think.
So, I know what I've noticed,
there's a tribute to a lot of different characters in here,
including Goblet of Fire's very own Cedric Diggory.
- [James] Yes. - Where's our tribute?
Yeah.
Have we just got to stand in a plinth?
We didn't get a shirt. We'll do this.
You're good like that. I'll take over, shall I?
- [Oliver] Caitlin, Jaleesa. - [Caitlin & Jalessa] Hello.
How are we today?
It's definitely like hyperspeed that
- we're working in, but... - [James] So what are you doing
right now then, Caitlin?
[Caitlin] So, the bottom of our showpiece is a desk,
so I am marbling fondant, basically three different
colors, and what that does is, like, it makes wood grain
striations, so then when I put it through the sheeter,
- it looks like this. - That size?
[Caitlin] Yeah. That's this.
- [James] Wow. - Which one of you girls is the biggest Potter fan here?
[Jaleesa] That's definitely Caitlin.
[laughing]
I almost burst into tears when I walked into the Great Hall.
I've been a fan since I was, like, 11, so it feels like
I kind of grew up with all of you guys, really.
[Oliver] OK.
I can, like, quote the movie and, like, do
- the voices and everything. - The voices?
- Go on, do a voice. - Where have you been?
That was really good.
Where have you been?
- Guys, we'll leave you to it. - [Jaleesa] Thank you.
[Molly] I'm making the yuzu sponge.
So we wanted it to be the Hufflepuff colors
of yellow and black. So we've got the yellow
of the sponge, and then I'm making
a black sesame buttercream, and that's gonna add,
like, a really nutty, like, earthy kind of flavor.
It's got multiple ends, and it's really giving me
that sugar threadiness.
I'll be doing a sesame nougatine as well,
and that's gonna add a little bit of crunch,
texture, and color to our cake.
This build is bigger and has more components than anything
I've ever done before.
It really needs to be a team effort.
I've just got to be...
positive.
I have some Szechuan buttons.
[Rui talking]
It will be part of the rosemary
and Szechuan button tasting element.
- Sure. - And it works...
[Rui talking]
I really have to use the goggles.
I'm a chef, food designer, and professor
at two universities and three different schools.
In Portugal, Lisbon, I'm really trying to make my name
as a mark and as a stamp for Portuguese gastronomy.
Beautiful, that's it.
[Angel] Oh, I got the best partner... [laughing].
So the Szechuan, it's something really nice
because it gives you the numbing effect.
It's gonna feel like you're having electrical impulses...
- Oh, my gosh. - in your tongue.
- Are you sure? - Sure, trust me.
Oh, my gosh, I can't feel my tongue now.
Boys, be careful.
Try one each.
[Angel] They should probably sign something before.
So we've got something which makes your tongue go to sleep.
- [Rui] You're going to feel like, electric. - Risky.
You're going to feel like, electric sensation
on your tongue.
OK, so I'm feeling like if you were to get a car battery
and lick it, that's probably the best way
I could describe it.
I have never had anything like this before...
- [James] It's magic. - [Oliver]...in my life.
[Rui] The molecules, everything, yeah.
- It will go... [laughing] - [James] See you later, guys.
I'll let you know if you start salivating too much.
[laughing]
[Marj] We're, like, starting the tasting element stuff.
My instant thought is make matcha cake, right?
It's green, obviously represents Slytherin.
[Sarah] So I'm doing the lime curd right now, and I'm also gonna
scale out the white chocolate whipped ganache.
I'm not the biggest fan of matcha.
- Do you like matcha? - I love matcha.
That's why it was my first thought.
- I mean, we could have done pistachio cake, but... - Right.
Matcha is a flavor that can go very bitter very quickly,
and we don't want it to be too earthy.
We just want to show a little bit of that bitterness
to then get balanced with the lime.
[Marj].Right now, oh, my god, now I'm throwing myself off!
- Oh, god. - What?
Now I'm like, "Did I put six in here...?"
So, basically, I am building the cake right here.
So, for our Slytherin tasting element, we are creating
the heart of dark magic.
It's gonna be a cardamom cake, and then I'm gonna add
a cardamom Swiss meringue buttercream, a orange curd
to add some tartness, some roasted salted pistachios,
and it's gonna be topped off with some candied orange peel.
Cardamom is a really popular flavor in my Indian culture.
It's known for being really herbaceous.
You know, it has some healing powers, and it's kind of
magical and mysterious.
I really want to win because I want to show the younger me
that, you know, you did it.
Growing up, when I used to watch all these cooking
and baking shows, I never saw someone like me, so I really
want to inspire everyone who's watching, who looks like me
maybe, to follow their dream.
Say, "Ah."
Oh my gosh, that's so good. Snack time.
Everybody gets snacks.
Hailing from Clermont, Florida, master chocolatier Katie
is hyper-competitive and uses her knowledge
and book smarts to always be top of the class.
A fierce competitor, Jujhar is Canada's luminary
of achievement, his fearless creativity
and bold flavors in baking have enabled his rise
to international prominence.
[Katie] I'm so glad you're my teammate because we're both really,
really driven and ambitious.
We're going up the best of the best and we want to be
the best of the best.
You know what?
- What? - [Jujhar] We're on schedule.
- [indistinct] - [Katie] That looks delicious.
[Stefan] Sponge is going in. Whipped ganache is going in.
- [Stefan] We're good, OK? - Yeah, nice.
So because I'm the pastry expert of the team, I am doing
a stunning layered entremet.
And what's that gonna be is multiple layers of textures
and flavors, starting with a crunchy base
with protein milk chocolate.
Then we've got a milk chocolate custard, an incredible
caramel sponge.
We then have the most amazing chewy caramel, some crunchy
pearls of chocolate, and finally a whipped ganache,
which is what I'm making now.
And that's gonna be a pillow for the diadem to sit on top.
I've got my whipped ganache. I'm gonna pipe that in.
We're then going to paint in all the detail to make sure
the mold catches all of that detail, and then I've got
my amazing layers to go inside the cake.
We've selected a mold which is shaped just like
this amazing pillow, and it's just the perfect platform
to present the diadem.
I grew up with cooking and food in my family.
My grandmother was a celebrated chef and cookery author,
so going into pastry was natural for me.
It's exciting to be here, representing sort of
- the family culinary spirit. - [Andy] Oh, yeah.
We're gonna make the Potterheads proud.
Buttoned-up executive pastry chef Stefan looks after
all the desserts at an exquisite English Yorkshire
five-star hotel.
His joyful, upbeat persona is reflected in
everything he bakes.
Arriving from New York, Andy is a creative whirlwind
of imagination.
He balances all his skills to deliver captivating creations.
Will magic happen when their worlds collide?
I think that, you know, two different sides of
the world can come together and make some cool stuff.
You know, New Yorkshire.
[chuckling]
[Heather] Our biggest risk from a construction standpoint
is gravity. It's not cake's friend.
Before my very eyes, pieces of the lion's head
are falling off.
[singing] Ooh, this is a mess.
[normally] I'm gonna just have to be a lot more careful.
It's a big problem.
I mean, it's the focal point, it's got to be perfection.
Gryffindor teams, three hours gone.
You are halfway through your bake.
Wait, what? Oh my gosh.
[Heather] I'm hoping, with the amount of time we have left,
that it's saveable.
So we're gonna get to it and see what can happen.
I used much more chocolate than it was expected,
but the chocolate is doing its job, and it's holding
the rice cereal in its place.
- [Kate] We haven't given up yet. - [Heather] We got time to rally.
[Kate] We're trying to blend that tall, skinny, tasting piece
that we have into the face, so almost like a little frame.
And we're just wanting to make sure that this all stays
in its place.
I'll definitely be trimming some of this away, but we just
need to fill in those little gaps for now.
We don't want our lion having a double chin.
We're covering the face in fondant so it can be nice
and rigid and soft and solid. So happy with it.
I couldn't be happier at the moment.
Ooh, she pretty.
[Jaleesa] I just need one more egg.
[Caitlin] For our tasting element, we really wanted the flavor
to encompass Ravenclaw. What do you do when you study?
You have a nice, hot cup of tea.
But also, we kind of wanted that to reflect Professor Trelawney
- because she does the tea leaf readings. - Yes.
[Jaleesa] So we are going for a London Fog-inspired cake.
It'll be an Earl Grey cake with a Earl Grey milk soak that has
a blueberry lavender jam with a vanilla and honey
Swiss meringue buttercream dressed up as books.
So I'm all about natural flavor, so this is right up
my alley for making a London Fog cake.
So, instead of using some weird, like, extract, I'm just gonna
put Earl Grey tea leaves and make the natural flavor
in my cake.
[Caitlin] This smells so good, Jaleesa.
So once the cakes are out of the oven, I apply the milk soak
while it's still warm.
So this kind of helps reintroduce the Earl Grey
flavor and also a little bit of sweetness.
So the hole in the center is to fit through my armature
in the bottom where the books are gonna sit.
So, it's gotta make a little hole for it so it can sit
perfectly inside.
Do you want to try the cake?
- Give me that. - [laughing]
[Caitlin] I definitely feel confident in us going far in this
- competition and winning. - [Jaleesa] Oh, we're winning.
Hold my butterbeer.
We love Stefan and Andy, but they got to go.
- [Oliver] Jenny, Alex. - Hey.
Hello.
What does it feel like to be in this kitchen
- in this competition right now? - My mind is blown.
- I'm very warm. - [Oliver] Yeah?
But it's a bonkers experience, isn't it?
Jenny, have you done this before, then?
[Jenny] I've done a show before.
Do you remember last year's winner, Zoe?
- [James] Yes. - So I was on a show with her.
- [Oliver] Right, OK, yeah, OK, OK. - So it's her fault I'm here.
She said to me, "Enjoy the ride."
- OK. - "You're gonna be shattered."
- No pressure. - No pressure.
And what about other competitions?
Well, yes, we have something in the UK
called Cake International.
And I may have won that in 2022.
And then I was voted as the number one cake artist
in the UK in 2023.
So you're pretty good, that's what I'm guessing.
No, not bad. I'm British.
- We don't brag. - [James] Exactly, yeah.
Is this the first type of bake that you've got to bake
- a dragon or anything like that? - For me, it is.
So I'm a bit nervous, to be honest.
[James] So what are you doing to push yourselves?
[Jenny] I just think we've got a winning concept.
I think we've got a cracking idea.
We've got some stupid sort of techniques that we're using.
You know, for goodness sake, edible skin.
We're making also a really super shiny
Norbert's chocolate egg.
Also some sugar rocks and you will see we have
we have quite things going on here.
I mean, his tasting element down the bottom with the egg
is just bananas.
It's not really bananas, but you know what I mean.
[James] So what are you doing now?
[Alex] So we are smoking the whipped cream.
This is a smoke gun. I'm using walnut chips.
- [James] Walnut chips, right? - Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- Oh, it is smoky. - [Alex] It is smoky, yeah.
[Alex] There you go. So it is coming inside.
- It smells like bonfire now. - Yeah.
[James] I mean, it sounds very unique.
Bye, boys. See you later.
[Alex] We are planning on making a smoked hazelnut [indistinct].
With a passion fruit cremeux.
I'm just putting the passion fruit cremeux on top of
the hazelnut cake, and I'm gonna cover it
with a mirror glaze.
Oh, so the glaze is looking great.
It's perfect. It's really shiny.
Cool. Done.
We are creating little baby mandrakes.
And I will start assembling together with the mousse,
and then I'm going to dip in chocolate.
I'm making the belly of the baby mandrakes.
- [Angel] They're chubby. - [Rui] They are.
[Angel] Although I do feel like they're always kind of angry.
Big nose. It's gonna be so whimsical.
[Rui] I'm now becoming a makeup artist.
- Molly, Priya. - Hi.
- Hi. - First time working as a team.
- How's it going? - [Priya] Yeah, it's going great.
I love having a partner.
I'm used to working on my own, so this is nice.
- What is all that cake for? - [Molly] This is the badger.
[Molly] It's roughly probably a life-size badger.
They are quite big.
How many badgers do you carve on average weekly,
- would you say? - Not loads,
but I have done them before.
What context was that?
'Cause I can't imagine there being that many...
I think it was a plumbing company that were called
- Badger Plumbing. - That's awesome.
[Molly] I've had my bakery for three years, and it's very pink,
it's very fun, it's like if a unicorn went
into a bakery, that's what I would have.
Molly, I've got to ask, are you a quick carver
- like this normally, or...? - [Molly] Yeah.
Not quite as sweaty and stressed, but, yeah.
All the best, and we'll see you soon.
[Molly] Thank you.
Right now, I'm unmolding the basilisk head that I cast
out of chocolate.
Ah, oh, OK. Look at that.
- [Sarah] That's perfect. - [Marj] That's beautiful.
[Sarah] OK, so now I have a base, so I'm gonna make the body
and attach it to the head and build off of that.
Now I'm an official dentist.
[whirring]
OK, I feel a lot better now that that's done.
- [Marj] That's awesome. - Perfect, Marj.
- [Marj] Perfect. - Perfect.
[Sarah] I am an assistant pastry chef.
I specialize in doing a lot of chocolate and sugar work.
[Marj] My wheelhouse is artistry, honestly.
I'm a cake artist, but I've always
drawn and sculpted.
Our love for pastry and artistry in general
really connects us.
I feel like all of us here are artists, and our art is edible.
[Marj] I like that.
[Jujhar] With Voldemort's cloak to make it dramatic,
we want to really impress the judges.
You know, I want this to look really organic, and I want
the entire cloak all moving in one direction.
And Voldemort's cloak will be airbrushed
in an emerald green color.
I got to add some shine. I got to add some highlights.
That's really gonna bring this piece to life.
Stunning. It's perfect.
Caitlin, look. Look at Voldemort.
- [Caitlin] That's cool, dude. - [Molly] Oh, it looks so good.
Hi, Caitlin. How are you?
Love you.
I am painting some blue wafer paper black with glycerin
and gel color. It's gonna soften it,
and I'll be able to cut all of my feathers for the Raven out.
I'm gonna do individual feathers.
I honestly didn't think this would take this long,
so I'm a little behind.
I did not want to be still doing this at this point,
but here we are.
[Jaleesa] The most important part of our showpiece is our mascot,
and because Caitlin has such strength in hyper-realism,
she's definitely gonna take lead on that.
- [Caitlin] These are sticking together. - [Jaleesa] Huh?
[Caitlin] These are sticking together.
My feathers completely didn't work.
I don't know if I added too much glycerin or the water
completely dissolved it, but they're so flimsy,
it falls apart, and the other ones are sticking to the tray.
So, OK, this is definitely not how I thought today
was gonna be. I'm humbled real quick.
I wasted an hour for no reason, and now I don't know
what to do. It really sucks.
[dramatic chord strike]
- [Caitlin] These are sticking together. - [Jaleesa] Huh?
[Caitlin] These are sticking together.
My feathers completely didn't work.
OK, full pivot.
I'm just gonna have to do white and airbrush it.
- Yeah. - I mean, it's not gonna be black-black,
- but it'll be... yeah. - Black enough.
[Caitlin] So I have to fix my feathers.
I'm just gonna cut all the feathers
and individually airbrush them.
The airbrushing's working.
[Jaleesa] OK, no, it looks good!
This is the last thing I wanted to do.
Before, I was cool as a cucumber, but now I am
having full crash-out moment.
I am feeling behind, but as soon as I can get
these feathers on this last wing, I can start moving
rather quickly. You know, famous last words.
Jaleesa, we cannot go home.
[Jaleesa] You know we're not going home.
So now I'm starting to build the body of my raven, so I just
want to get the body set and covered in ganache
so that I can start sculpting it.
I do want to spend a lot of time on making sure this raven
looks 100%.
I'm using modeling chocolate just to model the beak,
the eyes, and get all that feather work in,
and the face area. I think I'm on the right track.
[Stefan] To create these feathers, I'm taking tempered chocolate.
We have hundreds of feathers to make and then to stick onto
the wings, and we're kind of getting to a stage where
we're a little bit worried if we can actually do it.
[Jenny] Oh, I need to start working on Hagrid.
This is black modeling paste.
This is where I'm gonna be attaching all the sparkly lights,
where Norbert fires his burp at his beard.
I'm gonna do his face at the top, but just his nose,
and his goggles. A really big, bushy beard.
It's actually edible corn silk. I'm quite happy, actually.
Oh, that's perfect.
[Molly] So I'm gonna add some more detail.
I love it.
Our showpiece was really a celebration of earth
and growth, and so we'll have mushrooms and snails and slugs.
- [Priya] We love those guys. - Cute.
So cute.
[Molly] I'm making the snails made from textured fondant
and modeling paste. I'm really obsessed with color
and making sure things visually look balanced.
Whoo. Great.
[Oliver] Ravenclaw teams, you still have two hours to go.
Slithering teams, there's 90 minutes left
in the Slytherin duel.
Ah, no.
- OK. - Wow, we gotta hustle.
[Katie] I have to pour this boiling hot isomalt onto the spiral.
Here we go.
Water is our magical element, so this is a cascading swirl
going upwards looking like water.
I'll use a couple mediums of isomalt, some cold,
some ribboning, and then some sponge sugar.
It's a little dangerous, truthfully.
We haven't tested it. We don't know.
I've never poured spiral isomalt.
[Jujhar] It's kind of insane, yeah, because this whole
showpiece can just all fall apart.
Looks good. Like, it looks like water.
[Katie] OK.
- Stefan, Andy. - [Oliver] How are you guys finding working together?
So far, it's been awesome working with Andy,
and we're having fun.
How much of a Potter fan are you, then, Stefan?
Well, yeah, I love the "Harry Potter" movies,
but I've got an interesting connection.
We actually shared a scene together in the first movie.
- Yeah, yeah. - I was stood in the background,
yeah, and they recruited the extras
from the locals from the area.
Our job is to make sure that you don't get bloodied up too bad.
Can't make any promises, of course.
That scene was actually the first scene that
- we had dialogue. - Oh, seriously?
Oh, wow, that's your first dialogue scene.
What scene were you in in "Harry Potter"?
- [Andy] Um... - [laughing]
Because everyone at this table has been, you see, so...
But at least you can say you filmed in
- the Great Hall now. - [Andy] Right?
Exactly.
[Caitlin] Don't like that.
I am freaking out because I've lost all this time
with the feathers, and now I am completely hand-sculpting
the body of this raven.
I grab my black modeling chocolate.
I just kind of, like, lump it on.
I don't care. I don't care.
And I'm basically just going triple-time, slashing away
at the body and the head and making these
little striations to make it look like it's got its fur
and its feathers.
I took my aggravation out on it.
Jaleesa, I feel like I'm gonna puke.
[Jaleesa] Don't puke.
Gryffindor teams, one hour to go.
Whoa.
Hashtag newbie problems.
[whooshing]
[Angel] Oh my gosh.
[cheering]
Did someone say we're making a sequel?
[James] Bakers, I'd like you to meet your judges.
- Hello. - Hi.
- Hello, bakers. - Hello, bakers.
[together] Hi!
Carla and Jozef, oh my gosh.
I am just, I don't know. I don't know how to feel.
I'm sweaty. I'm shaky.
So how's it working out on this first challenge?
- [Carla] You excited? - [all] Yes.
- Excited. - Well, good.
So we just dropped by to wish you some good luck and to let
you know all season long we'll be judging your cakes on story,
execution, and taste.
And we also have some news.
[woman] Oh, boy.
This challenge is all about your four head-to-head duels.
If you win yours, you're through
to the next round.
But if you don't,
Jozef and I can only save
two losing teams.
Wow.
That means two teams will be leaving the competition.
- Oh. - Oh, boy.
We're gonna leave you to think about that,
but rest assured, we can't wait to taste
your Hogwarts House creations.
So we'll see you all in the Great Hall.
See you there.
The judges dropped a bit of a bombshell.
- Oh, my gosh. - My guts are like, ugh!
[Kate] I feel like I might pass out or throw up right now.
Can I go somewhere else?
I panic a little bit. There's so much pressure.
[dramatic music plays]
[suspenseful chord strike]
Gryffindor teams, you have 30 minutes left.
- Whoa. - Agh.
I feel a lot better. Thank you very much.
It's my first time ever competing like this,
and it's scary to put yourself out there, but you kind of
put on a brave face and you get it done, just like
- true Gryffindors do. - Gonna make it happen.
[Alex] Wow. Come on.
Did I ever tell you I'm not very delicate?
[Alex] Yes, several times. Careful with those.
[Jenny] Yeah.
We're making a little stack of textbooks that'll go next to
the lion head. So, just cutting them to size.
We've packed as much detail as we can into it while working up
- against the clock. - [Heather] We're gonna make the scarf happen.
Just giving it that knit feel.
[Jenny] At the moment, I'm considering fainting.
- [Alex] Don't. - No, I'm really seriously not very good.
OK, Gryffindor house teams. Arresto momentum.
Time is up!
[James] Heather and Kate, Jenny and Alex, grab what
you can, and our house elves will help with the rest.
[Oliver] When you get to the Great Hall, you'll have just five minutes
to assemble your bakes, ready to cast a spell
on our judges.
[Kate] There's a little bit of anxiety.
Will the judges like it? Could we have done more?
It's all looking gorgeous. Don't worry.
- [Jenny] Don't panic. - [Alex] I'm not panicking.
- Are you panicking? - No, darling.
- [whimsical music plays] - [creaking]
[Jozef] Hello, Gryffindor teams.
It's simple.
Our winning team from this duel will move safely through
- to the next challenge. - [Carla] The other team...
will be in danger of having their journey end
before it really begins.
- [Carla] It's Norbert. - No, it's Norbert.
- Norbit. - [Jozef] And Norbert's mummy.
- [laughing] - [Carla] Norbert's mummy.
[Jozef] You've even got his oven mitts in there.
I love the textures that you have throughout,
and especially on the beard there,
- it looks really good. - [gasps]
[laughing]
- [Jozef] Oh, get this. - [Alex] You can turn the lights on.
Oh, my god. It is so Norbert when he burps.
[Jozef] That's a great part of the story to have brought to life.
Thank you. Thank you so much.
Let's move on to the execution.
I love the colors.
Lovely sheen on that chocolate.
I mean, that looks, that's tempering at its best.
I think you guys did a great job.
- Thank you. - Now it's time for taste.
OK. So I'm just gonna...
take this one out. There you go.
- [Jenny] Here we go. - There you go.
- Thank you. - Enjoy.
- Enjoy. - I love the little dragon.
- I love the mirror glaze. - [Carla] The mirror glaze is beautiful.
[Jozef] Very nicely done.
OK, so we decided to make a smoked hazelnut mousse.
It is like if baby Norbert finished the dessert, you know?
- [Jozef] I love it. - [Alex] And I decided to make a passion fruit cremeux.
[Alex] And also, we have this amazing roasted hazelnut cake.
I'm like this. I'm like this.
- I'm like this. - [Carla] I really like the flavors.
And the smokiness?
Lost.
- Oh. - [Jozef] To me.
I think it's perfect, only because if it was
too much smoke, it would blow everything out.
[Jozef] You guys have such a nice balance.
Your flavor profiles that you've got, I think
- they're wonderful. - Thank you so much.
- Thank you very much. - Thank you.
[Carla] Wow. Courage.
[Jozef] Oh, that's cool. That brings it to life, doesn't it?
[Carla] Yeah, it really does.
[Jozef] Yeah, all the kind of main symbols and emblems of it.
You've got the lion, you've got the scarf there, you've got
the sword of Gryffindor.
So what do we think of the storytelling here, Carla?
I like it. Gryffindor traits of courage,
determination, bravery.
I mean, nothing embodies this more than this.
- Thank you. - Thank you.
I think you'd make Godric Gryffindor proud
- with this piece. - [Carla] Let's talk about execution.
- I love the coloring. - [Jozef] The texture on the fabric
of the scarf, the texture and the detailing on the spines
of the books.
Everything is really beautifully executed.
- Thank you. - Talk to us about your tasting element.
It's sad to see you cutting in such a magnificent beast.
- I know. - I'm so sorry.
[Kate] So our tasting element involves a rhubarb and blood orange
compote paired with a honey crema.
- Thank you. - Thank you.
[Kate] Some white chocolate milk crumb just for a little bit
- of crunch and a buttermilk cake. - Oh.
My kneecaps are quivering.
I think the rhubarb and blood orange is a very nice acidity.
I think maybe another layer of the blood orange?
Yes. You have white chocolate,
you have honey, you have all of
those sort of creamy, sweet notes, and then that
would just balance it out. I like this cake.
Thank you.
Look, it's good, but good is the enemy of great,
- as they say. - [Kate] Thank you very much.
- Thank you, ladies. - [Kate] Appreciate it.
[suspenseful piano keys play]
Two great Gryffindor showpieces, but there can
only be one winner.
We've decided the victorious Gryffindor team in this duel,
safely through to the next round of this competition...
- [are... - suspenseful music builds]
Jenny and Alex,
Congratulations.
- You are safe from elimination. - [Heather] Well done,
- well done. - [Jenny] We won.
-We won! -That's what happened. We won.
But what that does mean, Heather and Kate,
your place is at risk.
We'll see you back here once we've judged all of the duels.
- Thank you. - Thank you.
I feel a little bit like I let Heather down,
because I'm kind of the flavor person here.
It could be the thing that sends us home, or it could be
the thing that sends us on to the next challenge.
This is a great start, and I can't wait to see
- what's next. - [Jozef] Yeah.
One hour to go, Slytherin teams.
- [Sarah] Oh, my gosh. - Hustle.
Hufflepuffs, you have 30 minutes remaining.
[Molly] Detail, detail, detail. I need to finish his face.
The airbrushing takes it to another level.
Sometimes if you add a little bit of black shading
or dark brown, it gives it another...
another element of realism.
This is intense baking and time slipping away.
- OK, Hufflepuff teams. - [James] Five minutes to go.
[Priya] Where do you want the pots?
[Molly] I'd do one full and then one laid down.
[Rui] You don't want it all mixed, right?
Just a little bit.
- Hufflepuffs, time is up. - It's gorgeous.
- It is gorgeous, to be fair. - We did it.
[dramatic music plays]
[Angel] I think we did a great job.
It's nice and clean.
The little mandrakes are beautiful with those
- big bellies. - [Rui] All the elements
- are there. - [Angel] We feel great.
[Priya] We're done, and that's a huge relief.
[Molly] I hope they see how much work and technique and skill has
gone into it.
Hello. Wow, look at all of this.
- [Jozef] Wow. - I mean...
That looks like straight-up taxidermy.
I mean, the snail, it looks nice and wet,
like, its leaves, its slime.
Anywhere else, that wouldn't be a great compliment, but...
[Priya] Uh-huh.
[Jozef] You're loving the slugs, aren't you?
- [Jozef] I'm loving the greenhouse. - I think the story, incredible.
You didn't need to say a word. We got it.
Yeah, you look at this and you know what house
- this is representing. - [Carla] Yes.
I think execution...
Everything is executed beautifully.
- Thank you. - [Carla] The texture.
- [Carla] I mean, it feels like... - [Jozef] And the eyes.
- [Carla] The eyes. - [Jozef] The eyes.
- [Carla] The eyes. - [Jozef] Look at that.
No, but the devil is in the detail.
- That's incredible. - [Molly] Thank you.
[Jozef] Really, and you've certainly delivered
on the house element of earth.
- You really have. - And then we've got some...
mm, growth coming from the earth as well.
- Growth. - Growth.
- [Carla] Oh, oh, oh. - [Jozef] Here we go.
- Oh, oh. - [laughing]
So, what is the tasting element?
[Priya] So for our tasting element today, we're doing
a black sesame and yuzu cake.
- Oh, you got a slug. - Oooh.
[Jozef] I love it.
We've done the sponge yellow, and then we've got
a sesame nougatine in there, a yuzu curd.
The acidity of the yuzu is perfect.
Black sesame overpowers a little.
The sesame nougatine is really nice.
I don't know if the balance was there.
- OK. - All right, thank you so much.
[Priya] Thank you.
- [Jozef] Wow, we know what this is. - Oh, my gosh.
[Carla] This is one of the most iconic plants.
- Absolutely. - You know.
[Jozef] You know exactly where this is from.
You know exactly what you're trying to say with it.
From a story point of view, you've definitely nailed it.
Thank you.
[Jozef] The detailing looks incredible on this.
I love the leaves.
I love the mandrakes themselves.
- [Carla] All of the different faces. - [Jozef] Full of character.
And we've got the Hufflepuff colors.
- Oh, yes. - [Jozef] Don't forget.
I think, just to be safe, you guys should probably
- put these on. - OK.
Ooh.
It's so interactive. You look cute, though.
Oh my god.
- Ooh. - [crying]
Oh, ooh, it's moving.
[crying]
- [Jozef] Love it. - [Carla] Oh.
- Oh, my gosh. - Fantastic.
[Carla] I loved it. I love the movement
up and down, I love the mouth.
The execution, I think, is great.
All right, so let's taste it.
First of all, I'd like to say a huge honor to be judged
by Chef Jozef, because it's been over a decade that I follow
- your work. - Thank you.
And all this multi-sensory experience.
So we use the Szechuan peppers, which has, like,
this numbing effect in our tongue.
So we did the white chocolate mousse
with the coriander seeds.
Angel did an amazing toffee caramel with Szechuan peppers.
And then there's a thin layer of pate frire
with pear and fennel.
And the cake soaked in whiskey syrup.
No, I'm getting a little zing. I am.
Which I think is good because, to be honest with you,
you don't want it going too far the other way as well,
where you end up with a really numb, petrified tongue.
No, I actually think that that's got a really nice
balance to it.
I get the acid, I get the creaminess,
I get the Szechuan, and then it's almost like
my mouth is watering for another bite.
- Are you not salivating? - I am salivating.
Well, what's a good dessert if it doesn't
make you salivate?
We're literally salivating, wanting that next bite.
Carla, look at me, tucking away into it with my tongue
numbingly salivating.
Yes.
This is an experience we are not soon to forget.
- It was incredible. - Absolutely.
- Thank you. - Thank you.
[whispering] Good job.
[suspenseful music plays]
Teams, there can only be one winner.
The team moving on in the competition...
[suspenseful music plays]
Is Rui and Angel.
- [clapping] - [triumphant music plays]
Molly and Priya, it's lucky that patience is
a Hufflepuff trait, because you won't find out
your fate until a little later.
We'll see you at the elimination.
We're not gonna go home. I'm just, I'm quietly confident.
- [giggling] - Is that jinxing it?
OK, so we're down to our final four teams.
Slytherin teams, we have 30 minutes left for you.
Oooh.
[Sarah] Marj, what do you think about something like this
- for the fang? - That's amazing.
The judges will take the basilisk fang and stab
Tom Riddle's diary, which will then ooze red ink.
I'm gonna fill up a little water balloon with it,
and then I'm gonna practice poking it with an X-Acto knife.
- [Sarah] All right, Marj. - [Marj] Oh.
[Marj] That's nasty.
[Sarah] Yeah, that's a good consistency.
[Marj] Does this look like a good size for the Tom Riddle diary?
- Yeah. - [Marj] We're gonna, you know, carve it out.
- [Sarah] As long as there's room for that balloon in there. - [Marj] For sure.
We need to get our isomalt spiral on, and now both of us
have to get this entire spiral of our piece, and this is
the hardest thing. What if it's the wrong size?
What if it doesn't fit? We don't even know.
- Yeah. - [Katie] Oh, my God.
Please, please, please, please don't crack.
Please don't crack. I'm, like, I'm so nervous, my heart.
- [Katie] I'm sweating. - [Jujhar] I'm good, I'm good, I'm good.
[Katie] Oh, my gosh.
[Jujhar] Nearly everything can all shatter into pieces.
The spiral can nick into Voldemort.
- I'm slowly going down. - [Katie] Clearing the elbow.
- [Katie] Other arm. - [soft cracking]
- [gasps] - [Katie] I hear the crack.
OK, here goes a piece.
- OK, I'm spinning. - [Katie] OK.
[Katie] And it's down. How does that side look?
[Jujhar] It's good.
[Katie] We did it. It didn't break.
It didn't break.
[Oliver] OK, Slytherin teams.
[feigning Parseltongue]
Are you all right, mate?
Yeah, I'm just telling Slytherin they've got
10 minutes left. You know, Parseltongue
[Marj] OK, we're almost there.
The clock is winding down, so, as a team, we really
have to prioritize.
Not my best work, but diary is done.
This piece is pretty ambitious.
Basically three different levels, but at this point,
we have to sacrifice things like details.
[Sarah] For the sake of time, I'm just gonna do
two different shades of green for the stalagmites.
[whining]
You're good, Marj. You got this!
You got this. I believe in you.
[Katie] Don't break. Don't break.
Stay there. Stay like this.
[James] OK, Slytherin teams.
- [James] Six, five, four, three... - We just have to finish strong,
- we're good, we're good. - [James]...two, one.
Arresto Momentum. Your time is up.
- Ooh. - [Sarah] Marj.
- [Sarah] That was madness. - [Katie] Oh, my gosh.
We did it. We did it.
- [Oliver] Jujhar and Katie... - Yes.
Marj and Sarah, it's time to present
your superb showpieces.
[dramatic music plays]
[Katie] This is such an ambitious piece,
but I think I really showed the judges that
we are here to compete at the top level.
[Sarah] We thought our showpiece is gonna be tall, but I'm seeing
even larger-than-life on the other side of the room.
- [Marj] I'm very nervous. - [Sarah] You're good, Marj.
[Sarah] Breathe. Breathe.
I gotcha.
[dramatic music builds]
[Jozef] Well, if it isn't the bad boys and girls of baking,
the Slytherin teams.
It's time to judge your head-to-head duel.
Oh, my god, I am so...
[Jozef] Marj and Sarah.
[Carla] All right, I'm interested in what you think about this,
because you are a fellow Slytherin.
Well, I am, yeah. We're on home turf here.
So, this is obviously the Chamber of Secrets
at the bottom.
It's got some lovely details, even though you've got
the Basilisk fang there and Tom Riddle's diary.
So, if you have the urge to stab it
- with our Basilisk fang... - I'm not going to say no.
- [Carla] Oh, wow. - [Sarah] Yeah, be careful with it.
Oh, OK, here we go.
- Ooh. - [Marj] There we go.
- Oh. - That's cool.
OK, the water is bubbling up.
I like dark things, so I think that's a really,
really cool effect.
Look, story-wise, I love that you guys have transported us
to somewhere, but do I feel you've necessarily told us
a story with it? I don't know.
[Carla] Yeah, I agree.
In terms of execution, I thought the bubbling
of the water, the color, the smoke,
Tom Riddle's diary looks really great.
I would have liked more stalagmites, stalactites
around here.
[Jozef] I just think sometimes the little finishing details,
that is what really takes something from being
a nice piece to an incredible showpiece.
But now I think what we need to do is try the tasting element.
- Yes. - Well, let me ask you this.
So do we need to speak Parseltongue, or maybe you do,
to actually get some of the cake?
I would love to hear it.
[feigning Parseltongue]
- [Jozef] There we go. - [Sarah] That was great,
- that was great. - Not bad, not bad.
[Carla] Well, it didn't work.
Well, I didn't say I was fluent.
[laughing]
[Sarah] So we made a matcha cake with a lime curd and a white
chocolate whipped ganache with some ginger toffee pieces.
- Wow, my gosh. - [Jozef] That's a real Slytherin green there for you, isn't it?
Oh, my gosh.
[Marj] That's good, right?
My face doesn't lie.
I think that the ratio of cream to cake is...
perfect.
The matcha, you hit the nail on the head.
I would get a doggie bag of this.
Oh, thank you.
[exhaling]
[whispering] Oh my god.
[Carla] Jujhar and Katie.
[Jozef] "The Order of the Phoenix."
This is, I'm guessing, the final battle
between Voldemort and Dumbledore.
- It is. - Stuff of legends.
Yeah, you definitely tell the story.
[Carla] The movement of this piece.
Yeah, you have a great sense of motion in this, and I love
the way you kind of represented the water.
So you've done several different textures
to build that up as opposed to just having one isomalt.
- [Jozef] That's really cool. - Thank you.
- [Jozef] Looks great. - I mean, really great on execution.
- Thank you. - Let's move on to taste.
[Jujhar] We're calling this The Heart of the Dark Magic.
Ooh, I like that.
[Jujhar] We did a cardamom cake.
It has a cardamom simple syrup, an orange curd,
cardamom Swiss meringue buttercream, candied oranges,
and some salted pistachios.
I've never had a cardamom cake before.
I think that's brilliant.
I like the zing of the citrus, I really like the salted
pistachios, but I kind of feel they could be a bit crunchier.
OK, so, oh, well, do you like it, Carla?
What does my face say?
All of the flavors work. The crumb of the cake is...
- so good. - Thank you.
Thank you, guys.
[suspenseful music plays]
The team that's come out on top in this duel...
- is... - [suspenseful music builds]
- Jujhar and Katie. - Thank you.
Good job. Good job.
I'm so relieved. There's so much work that went
into this piece, and it feels like the longest day ever,
but we wanted it very, very much.
Good job, guys.
Marj and Sarah, unfortunately, that puts you
in our bottom four teams,
and we can only save two,
so you're in for a bit of a nervous wait.
[Sarah] I am trying to stay positive.
You never know what's gonna happen.
Ravenclaw teams, you are our final duel.
- [Andy] Right, so diadems are done. - [Stefan] Wonderful.
Just 30 minutes left, Ravenclaws.
[Andy] I'm making sure I don't spell anything wrong.
One of the last things is the handwriting and calligraphy
on the individual pages of our book,
which will be the riddle.
I really need to get started on sculpting the rest
of the books. I'm very stressed out,
and I wasted a lot of time.
I'm not happy.
This is definitely not how I wanted this to go.
I mean, honestly, we're running out of time.
Breathe. Breathe.
[exhales]
We really want to make sure we incorporate a lot of air,
because that's our element.
So, this is supposed to be our magical gust.
So, first, I get some modeling chocolate, and I start to
marble it slightly to give it more dimension.
Going for, like, light and airy.
And I start to put it on my showpiece.
OK, OK, OK.
Every time I put it on, it just keeps falling,
and it keeps falling, and it keeps falling.
It was very, very frustrating.
Just stick a little bit.
The fact that I'm doing this over and over and over
is making me lose it.
Oh, my god.
And I'm trying to, like, keep my cool, but I'm like,
"If this does not stick, it's not gonna look like
anything, it'll be an empty tube."
[groans]
It's totally fine.
[suspenseful chord strike]
OK, the best technique to get it on is to get a hot gun
or a heat gun and heat up the modeling chocolate,
because chocolate melts, right?
So now that it's soft, it sticks.
[Caitlin] Is it working better?
[Jaleesa] Yeah, I got to pinch it on the edge.
But we need to also remember time.
So I'm just pushing stuff on. It was just like...
I'm not happy with how the gust came out, because some parts
could have definitely been smoother than others.
[Caitlin] When you do this at home, it's like, you plan for weeks.
You take your time to make sure everything's precise,
and here it's just like, slap it on.
I swear I'm a better artist than this.
[Jaleesa] All right.
Just 10 minutes to go.
[Caitlin] I have never done a showpiece like this before.
Now I'm trying to go triple time on these books.
I've lost way too much time.
Just trying to have a finished showpiece at this point.
[Stefan] You guide it with your hand.
Make sure it doesn't hit the raven.
Yeah, you're good, you're good.
[Stefan] Actually grab the bottom of the shield, if you can.
Going into head-to-head competition is tough.
We've gone for height, we've gone for a lot of
- chocolate on there. - [Andy] Wow.
It's not my best work, but at the end of the day,
like, I'm really proud of us.
- [Caitlin] Jaleesa. - OK.
Ravenclaw teams, arresto momentum.
- Your time is up. - I'm sorry.
I'm sorry we had to pivot so much.
We did it, we did it, we did it, we did it.
That's as good as it's gonna get.
[suspenseful music plays]
[Jaleesa] Everything has to get put on just in the right spot,
and the details, they're very delicate,
so I'm worried.
Take your time. There you go.
I've got one more feather on, then we can paint this as well.
We've got to hope that the judges love what we do
and that we can progress and win head-to-head.
[Andy] Oh, my god.
[Jozef] Hello, Ravenclaw teams.
It's time to judge your efforts and to find out
which Ravenclaw showpiece really took flight.
- [Jozef] Caitlin and Jaleesa. - [Carla] Wow.
This makes you want to study, right?
This is the raven creating a whirlwind of air.
We've got a wand down there.
- Wingardium Leviosa. - There you go.
- [gasps] - [cawing]
[Jozef] Whoa.
It feels a bit menacing up there, the way it's kind of
coming towards us.
[Carla] Great use of air as your house element.
Sort of this whirlwind and turning.
Story, we're getting all of your elements.
[Jozef] I do like the composition of what you've got,
but I don't know if it necessarily tells me a story.
On execution, look, guys, you've got some great
detail in there.
I love some of the textures that you guys have used,
the wings on the bird look great.
I like the little sugar bubbles.
You've got a lot of different technique going on here.
But the kind of sense of levitation that you're getting
there, the elements look quite heavy.
- Yeah. - [Carla] With the modeling chocolate,
I think you just needed a lighter medium.
Yeah, maybe like pulled sugar or something.
The books, I feel like the pages needed to be
a little bit more detailed, and that's what really is
required to make these showpieces stand out.
Now, let's talk about the tasting element.
Yeah, so because we are representing Ravenclaw,
Professor Trelawney, one of the classes that she teaches is
how to read the tea leaves.
So, we decided to go with a tea-inspired flavored cake.
- [Jozef] Love it. - [Jaleesa] So this is our take on London Fog.
So it is a Earl Grey cake with a Earl Grey milk soak.
There's a blueberry lavender jam with a honey vanilla
- Swiss meringue buttercream. - [Jozef] Yum.
- [Carla] Nice. - [Jozef] You were telling me
- London Fog's one of your favorites, isn't it? - [Carla] It is.
I love a London Fog beverage.
[Carla] I love the flavors.
What I am not enjoying are the bits of tea.
So I think what you needed to do...
- Sorry. - [ominous chord strike]
Is maybe take the sugar,
pulse it with the tea so it's finer.
It's sticking in my teeth. It's not really pleasant.
- It's rehydrated in the batter. - Oh, OK.
- That makes sense. - [Jozef] The flavor of the Earl Grey is lovely.
It comes through nice and clean.
The crumb, for me, is very dry.
You think about the ratios of what you have, I think
there needed to be more jam.
I think it's probably dry because once that tea
rehydrates, it absorbs.
It soaks up a lot of the moisture
from your cake, yeah.
That makes a lot of sense scientifically, yeah.
Mm-hmm.
Your cake is not where I think you wanted it to be.
- Thank you, guys. - Thank you.
[Jaleesa] Regardless of what happens, I love our showpiece,
and that's it. That's it.
[Jozef] Hello, gents.
- Oh, look at that raven. - [Jozef] We've got the colors.
We've got the blue, the silver, the scarf.
- Oh yeah. - That looks very nicely knitted.
- So this is the diadem that belongs to Rowena Ravenclaw. - [Jozef] Mm-hmm.
[Jozef] We've got the book of riddles, it would seem.
- We love a riddle. - We love a riddle.
[Andy] I have no voice, but I can speak.
[Stefan] I have no body, but I can't move.
I have no hands, but I can feel your skin.
- The element of air. - That is correct.
- Wind, air. - Very good.
Here we go. Top of the class, Jozef.
- [rustling] - [Carla] Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
- [gasps] - Oh.
- [laughing] - [Carla] Oh.
- Oh. - Very cool.
[Carla] Oh, I loved it. I love that.
I tell you, I love the book.
I love how light the pages look.
In terms of story, we get Ravenclaw.
In terms of the execution,
I love the textures that you guys have from the wings.
This little detailing here is beautiful.
- [Carla] I love that. - [Jozef] Yeah.
And if we're going to go into the details here,
I love the book and I love the page.
I think there could have been other text on other pages.
That's one of the things I have to say about being
in this space where we are. The devil is in the detail.
Every corner you look in, and I just think having
one random riddle there, I think it would have been nice maybe to
have other Ravenclaw-related content, images, whatever,
on the other pages. Little details.
- And then the feathers. - [Jozef] And then the feathers.
So, the only way to follow that explosion is to taste.
Obviously, displaying the beautiful diadem,
we've created this velvet-style pillar for it to sit upon.
And inside there, we've layered up
multiple flavors and textures.
We have a lovely base of a crunchy feuilletine
with almonds and blonde chocolate.
- [Carla] Ooh. - [Jozef] Ooh, I like the layers.
[Stefan] We then have a beautiful blonde chocolate sponge,
a layer of milk chocolate custard, a salted caramel.
[Carla] The layers of Ravenclaw.
We finally have a beautiful whipped ganache of
milk chocolate.
- [chuckling] - No poker face here.
[Carla] The mousse is so light.
You have the blonde chocolate cake and the fouilletine,
the sable, but as you're eating it, the salted caramel really
is the sauce in your mouth. It's almost like a sundae.
On the taste side, you guys have absolutely
nailed it with this.
[Andy] Thank you.
[suspenseful music plays]
The team...
through to the next challenge is...
- Andy and Stefan. - [Jaleesa] Congrats.
[Caitlin] Good job, guys.
It feels incredible to be safe and actually progressing
into the next round.
Caitlin and Jaleesa, unfortunately,
that puts you at risk
of leaving the competition for good.
[Caitlin] This is really nerve-wracking.
I know what we're both capable of, and that was
not our best foot forward.
Let's just pray that we make it through.
[James] Thank you for a wonderful first challenge
all about the houses of Hogwarts.
Jenny and Alex, Angel and Rui, Jujhar and Katie,
and Andy and Stefan, you won your Hogwarts house
duels, and that means that you'll all move on
to the next Harry Potter location, well done.
- [clapping] - [triumphant music plays]
So that leaves Heather and Kate,
Molly and Priya,
Marj and Sarah,
Caitlin and Jaleesa.
Unfortunately, this adventure must now end
for two talented teams.
Over to you, judges.
[Jozef] The first team we are saving...
is...
Molly and Priya.
[clapping]
[Heather] Congratulations, you guys.
The second and final team we're saving is...
Heather and Kate.
- Oh, my god. - [clapping]
I think the first challenge
was a good learning experience for us.
I think we're just gonna get better and better.
Marj and Sarah, Caitlin, Jaleesa, we're truly
sorry, but your time on "Wizards of Baking" must end here.
It's just you have full faith in your concept, and you work
very hard on it, and sometimes things
just don't go the way you want.
It's really hard to accept that when you know
- what you're capable of. - 100%.
[Carla] There were a lot of wonderful elements to your piece.
It really was the Earl Grey cake that didn't quite meet
the level that we thought it should.
At the end of the day, like, I'm really proud of us,
and I would not change who my partner was for anything.
[Jaleesa] I just feel like I let Caitlin down.
[Caitlin] You did not.
You did not.
[Jozef] Marj and Sarah, I think we both thought your matcha tea cake
was phenomenally good, but the finishing
and the detailing just wasn't quite where we needed it to be
for this competition.
I put everything I could into this piece.
And I know that I can walk away knowing that there was
nothing else I could have done.
[Marj] Even though I didn't get to stick around as long
as I wanted to, I think I showed what I'm capable of,
showed my personality, and that's all I can do.
[Oliver] OK, good job, bakers.
You've all made it through to the next challenge.
Congratulations.
