The story of Grizzly Adams is big and
powerful and beautiful.

They call me Mad Jack.

And me and my burro number seven been
traipsing these slopes and valleys for a

long spell. So I know the story from the
beginning. My friend Adams was accused

of a crime he didn't commit.

So he escaped into the mountains,
leaving behind the only life that he

knew.

Now, that wilderness out there ain't no
place for a greenhorn, and his chances

of surviving were mighty slim.

There was no time at all, for he was
beaten down, ragged, and nearly starved.

Long about then, he come upon a grizzly
bear cub, all alone and helpless.

Now, Adams knew that little critter
couldn't survive without his help, so he

started right down that cliff, risking
his own life.

To save it.

Now that cub took to Adams right off.

And that was when he discovered he had a
special kind of way with animals.

They just come right up to him like he
was a natural part of the wilderness.

But that bear cub, he was extra special.

As he growed, he became the best friend
Adams ever had. And together, they

became a legend.

Us mountain folk have been blessed with
rivers and streams, trees and flowers.

But if there's any one thing that shows
a man the glory of God in the

wilderness, I reckon it'd have to be the
animal.

And my friend James Adams had a sense
and feel of him like nobody I ever knew.

Take that little fox pup.

He'd found it near gone one day about a
month ago.

But he'd made it well, and now...

He was a -taking it back to its mama.

While Adams was telling the little fox
he'd soon be back home, Ben's nose was a

-telling him there was a stranger in the
bear, a black she -bear.

And as hard as Ben tried to make
friends, that other bear just moseyed on

like she'd never seen or heard him.

Ben, you coming with me or you got other
ideas?

Well,

I'll get you back to your family and
then I'll check on Ben later.

Ben's other idea was to follow that bear
and maybe find out why she was acting

so unfriendly.

Well, now, come on, number seven, drink.

You've been asking for water the last
six miles. Now you're here, drink.

I didn't know it, of course, but I was
going to meet that there bear before Ben

did.

Now, don't get skitterish. You've seen a
bear before.

Probably a friend of Ben's, anyway.

No, I don't guess it is.

I've never seen that bear before.

Now, that's close enough.

You come any closer, you and me's gonna
tangle. Now, there's enough room in

these mountains for everybody, so you
just get.

Howdy.

I hope my bear didn't give you a start.

Is that your bear?

Yeah. She's called Babe.

And they call me Marvin.

Marvin the Magnificent.

Well, they call me Mad Jack.

Mad Jack Mountain Man. How'd you get
here?

Why, horses and a wagon.

There, over there, behind those trees.

Well, you've got to be scatterbrained or
just plumb out of your mind to bring a

wagon up into this country.

Scatterbrained verily, sir.

You know, if you could just direct me to
the way to the settlement, I'd be very

much obliged.

Settlement.

All right, well, you see that row of
trees yonder?

You follow them right on up to the top
of the ridge there.

And then you start down.

And you just keep going down and down
until you come to the wagon trail.

Then you turn east.

After a bit, you come out into the
valley floor, and there's where you'll

the settlement.

How long is that going to take?

Well, me, it'll take about three days.
But you, it's going to take ten days,

maybe two weeks. Two weeks?

That is, if you heard.

Two weeks.

You hear that, babe?

Our luck is just going from bad to
worse, isn't it?

This was our last chance, too.

I heard there was going to be a
trapper's rendezvous at the settlement.

Well, there was, but you're about a
month too late.

What do you want there anyway? You and
the fur trade?

Oh, fur trade? Oh, horrors, no, no, no.
We perform, Babe and I. We

do magic and entertainment and... Well,
I... Really,

she looks an awful lot better when she's
feeling well.

But lately...

The poor old girl, she's been off her
feet. I guess it was my fault, really.

I'm just lost without babe. I mean, I
don't know what I'd do without her.

You know, we share everything. She's my
whole life.

Why, we share food and luxury and
success.

Although I do confess that there has
been precious little of the latter

recently.

Tell me.

You suppose they have poor houses for
bears, too?

Oh, now, if you and your bear is hungry,
old man Jack, he's got a lot of good

things in this. You got any magical
elixir in that pack of yours, sir?

That perhaps could put new life into
babe?

No, I ain't got none of that, but I got
a friend up country, and he thinks about

as much as his bear as you think of
yours.

You got a pet bear?

Well, he ain't exactly a pet, but he's a
friend.

And this fella's got a way with animals,
big or small.

Babe and I have come to the end of the
road.

The sooner we get back to town, the
better it's going to be. I can see now

it was just madness for me to come up
here.

Oh, now, don't you feel that way?

Won't you get some of old Mad Jack's
flapjacks inside of you? Why, you...

hello, Ben.

Don't be scared now. That's the bear I
was telling you about. Really? That's a

grizzly. Yep.

Well, he thinks he's a grizzly. I think
he's almost human.

Yeah, well, you know, grizzlies are not
friendly by nature.

Ben?

Where's Adams?

Usually where you find Ben, Adams isn't
far off.

Who's Adams, his owner?

Well, in this relationship, nobody owns
nobody.

But they is about as close as an animal
and a man can get. Sort of like maybe

you and Babe there.

You know, Ben, something tells me that
you and I are going to get to be real

good friends. Yeah.

Maybe you can even help Babe here, huh?

Think so?

Hey, Ben.

How would you like a honey cake, huh?

You know, it does seem to me that I saw
one of those honey cakes around here

somewhere while there it is. Look at
that.

Right in your friend's ear.

Here you are, Ben.

You know, I sure would like to meet this
friend of yours.

If Adams was surprised

when he seen that strange wagon, it
weren't nothing to what were to come.

You must be Marvin the Magnificent.

No, sir, that would be me.

Howdy, Adams. Howdy, Jack.

Adams? This here is Marvin.

I, uh, come across him and his bear up
there in the woods, and they was kind of

lost. I deem it a great pleasure to meet
you, Mr. Adams.

You have a mighty fine bear here, Mr.
Marvin. Thank you, sir. Ben, you been

behaving yourself?

Look at that. That is a remarkable job
of training.

Adams?

Marvin's bear here is acting kind of
sickly, and I told him, was he to bring

down here, that you'd fix her up right
away.

Yeah, you know, Adams, there was a time
when she was just as nimble as an

acrobat and as strong as a wrestler.
That's the way she was.

But a few years ago, she caught a cold.
She caught a cold, and it's just gotten

worse ever since. It's as though now her
joints were rusted through.

Yeah, it...

Babe, sit up here now and shake hands.
Shake hands with Mr.

Adams there.

Babe, shake hands.

Shake. Babe.

Well, yeah, that's the way it goes
sometimes.

Well, I'll tell you what we'll do.

Babe, just stand right up here and give
us a salute.

Babe,

babe, salute.

It's been a long time since you stood on
your head or walked a tightrope, eh?

How old is Babe Marvin?

I tell you, we have played every leading
opera house and music hall in the

entire country.

And you know the way they build her,
huh? They build her as Babe the Wonder

Bear. And that's what they called her,
too, didn't they, old girl?

Yes, sir.

Come on in here a minute. I'd like to
show you something.

Now, here is what I wanted to show you.

You're an artist in more than one way.
Yeah?

Well, I do not have your skill at the
healing arts.

I'm not a doctor, Marvin.

But sometimes the trouble can come with
what you're feeding them.

Oh, babe has eaten everything that I eat
all of her life.

Well, you know, Adams, if I have cream
pie, she has cream pie. Then nothing but

the best for her. No, sir.

But you know, the doctors I've been
taking her to, all they know about is

animals. You know, farm animals.

Who knows about bears in the towns and
cities, eh?

How long are you going to be in these
here parts?

Just as long as it takes. You think you
can cure her?

Well, all I know is Mother Nature takes
care of her own kind in her own way.

And we're just going to have to figure
out how to help her along.

That's real nice.

Yeah, baby.

There's something bothering that man,
Jack.

Well, sure, this bear here.

No, there's more to it than that.

It seemed like the best thing for Babe
was to spend a little time with Ben,

doing, well, bear things like going
fishing.

If Babe saw how Ben was doing it, well,
maybe she'd get the knack of it.

But it didn't work out that way.

While Ben was doing his best to show
Babe how to fish and inviting her to

on in the water, well, poor Babe had all
she could do to just sit there and

watch. The only fish Babe had ever ate
was served to her on a fancy dish, so

didn't understand what Ben was doing in
the water with a fish in his mouth.

Well, the whole thing frustrated her so
much that she just up and walked plumb

away.

Why do you figure Marvin wouldn't tell
us the age of his bear?

Because he's worried about her age.

And his own.

Nobody likes to admit they're getting
old.

Oh, lookie here.

Hiya, babe.

You back from the woods so soon?

Did you have a good time out there?

Yeah. Bet you found yourself a nice
berry bush, didn't you? Ate some nice

roots?

That meadow grass is good for your
stomach.

That'll make you feel a lot better.

Bet you old Ben showed you where all
them good natural vittles were, didn't

I'm just gonna squeeze around here a
little bit and feel your bones.

Her bones are older than she is.

Well, how can that be?

That kind of living she's been doing
just ain't natural for a bear, Jack.

Eating all that rich city food.

And only accounts for half of it.

Her shoulder's all swollen up with
lumbago.

Lumbago, huh?

But... I know just how you feel, old
girl.

I might have a piece of jerky here for
you, babe.

I sure wasn't looking forward to Marvin
hearing what Adams told me.

So... Maybe it was a good thing when
Nekoma dropped by when he did.

miracle, either he believes it's gonna

It ain't easy for any of us to face the
truth, especially Marvin.

He thinks if Babe's young, it's going to
make him young.

He's been using Babe like a crippled man
uses a crutch.

He's going to have to learn not to lean
on Babe anymore.

He's going to have to let her lead her
own life.

Once in a while here in the wilderness,
one wishes that one had a little summer

teepee, eh?

Somewhere to retire and rest on warm
summer evenings.

Perhaps one might consider building a
little teepee of cards.

carnivore.

eyes.

Now, Ben, I hope you haven't forgotten
how to do this.

There you are. Have you got a good grip
on the pail, Ben?

Eyes on the pail. Oh, my goodness.

Ben, where's the pail?

Ben, I find that hard to believe.

That was great, Marvin. I mean, just
terrific.

fact, you can get me some sugar for
Babe.

And I think I could use a little salt,

Oh, upon second thought, I think I'll
just pick that up when I get in there

myself. Well, why don't you try trading
for what you need like I do?

Trading? Yeah, when Jack can't sell my
carvings, he trades for what we need.

Well, I don't think my sketches are
nearly good enough for that.

Adams, it ain't hardly likely that

Adams and Ben spent the week making Babe
feel at home in the wilderness.

They seemed to it she got plenty of
exercise, ate bare food, and, well, kind

got the feel of what an acre was all
about.

Now just sit still a minute and I'll be
all done.

Marvin, I want you to follow me and
bring your sketch pad. I got something

you to draw.

Oh, what is it?

It's Babe.

She's fishing in a stream.

Adams took Marvin right down to the
stream.

Gosh, look at that.

She never caught a fish before in her
life.

It's not easy, Marvin. Ben has a hard
time catching them.

Look how fast she moves.

It helps when you're hungry.

Watching Babe do this, Marvin, reminds
me of the time old Jack stopped to make

camp. He was as hungry as a bear's own
self.

Suddenly, I'll tell you, it was
something like...

Something like a mountain lion must have
spooked number seven.

Poosh! Quick as a brush fire he took
off. Straight for these cliffs.

All the vittles and goodies were right
in the backpack.

Well, I don't know if you can believe
this, but a man Jack's age passing up a

spooked burrow, I... Well, I'm telling
you, that was one hungry mountain man.

Hey, I tell you, I've heard some of
Jack's stories, but the only ones he

exaggerated was the one about your
capabilities.

You're a fisherman.

I said, baby, you're a fisherman. You're
a fisherman. Go and get it. Go and get

it. Don't let it get away.

So you know what?

We could put that in the act.

We could have a tank of fish, bring it
right on the stage, and Babe would reach

in and pull out a fish alive without
hurting it at all. I tell you, Adams,

you sure gave her the right medicine.

I hope you'll give some to me when I
leave.

Marvin, you'd have to take the
wilderness and everything that's in it.

I don't understand.

Marvin, what's helped Babe doesn't come
in a bottle.

There ain't no medicine, except in
what's out here.

I didn't do anything for Babe.

I couldn't.

I've got eyes. I can see she's better.

Believe what you want, Marvin.

Babe's old.

Her legs are stiff. Her joints are
swollen.

We may be old, Babe and I, but we are
not ancient.

We have lots of good years left
together.

I know you do.

But Babe can't roll around and turn that
hurdy -gurdy anymore. She's not an

acrobat. She's finished.

I do not accept that.

I've trained her all of my life.

You've done wonders for her.

But somewhere there's got to be a doctor
who can cure Babe permanently.

Even if you can't.

Oh, you believe what you want.

But the truth's the truth.

I don't make the rules.

Nature makes them. You are wrong.

Babe is no more finished than I am. You
are wrong!

You've got to be.

Nobody said anything about being
finished, Marvin.

There's still lots of important things
you can do.

For yourself and for others.

Sir, I will not be patronized.

I guess Marvin felt so bad about what he
said to Adams, he just couldn't face

him in the morning.

So, when everyone was asleep, he wrote
Adams a letter, saying he was sorry and

that he was leaving.

Get in the wagon.

We sure are going to miss you.

You've been a great friend to me and
babe.

Goodbye.

The combination of it being dark

and... Marvin thinking so hard about his
problems.

He didn't notice it were Ben and not
Babe who got into that wagon.

Not wanting to wake anyone up, Marvin
led that wagon away as quietly as he

could.

There was no way he could know that it
wasn't Babe riding in that wagon, but

Ben.

Come morning, Marvin still thought it
was Babe sleeping in that wagon.

Well, babe, I guess you're going to miss
the wilderness and being among your

own, huh?

But don't you worry, babe.

Don't worry.

I'm going to find us a place where we
can be together.

Yes, sir, with maybe some trees and a
river with

fishing.

Not too far away.

Adams was right, babe.

I guess I just never wanted to reach the
day or face the

fact that we is finished.

Well, I just hope you'll forgive me for
being unkind.

Adams found Marvin's letter right off.

And it made him feel mighty bad.

I guess maybe he felt kind of
responsible for Marvin leaving like he

Naturally, when he seen Babe, he
couldn't figure out why she was still

Morning, Babe.

You haven't seen Ben around, have you?

Mighty peculiar, Babe. Marvin going off
and...

Not mention it.

Leaving you behind.

Says here that he couldn't face me for
what he'd said.

Shucks, I wasn't mad at him.

Well, you had your walk.

I reckon I'd have mine.

With Ben staying in the wagon being real
quiet and all.

But why would he go off and leave Babe?

Adams, it's that shave, aren't you?

Oh, yeah.

I got a funny feeling something ain't
right.

Where's Ben?

Well,

Adams was telling me what happened.

Ben was showing Marvin a shortcut back
to the cabin.

There ain't no other answer.

That man had Ben on his mind ever since
he first saw him.

No.

If Ben went with him, it's because he
wanted to. How long has Ben gone?

I don't know. Well, we can get Nekoma
here to track him. He can't have gone

far.

No. Now, Adams.

The man took Ben, and that makes him a
thief, and he ought to be treated like a

thief.

I'm going to fix a tear in this little
guy's leg.

Well, let that don't be, though.

Here Adams has been worrying about
Marvin selling his drawings, and all the

all Marvin was thinking about is getting
a hold of Ben, taking him away, and

taking him east.

Ben's back.

Ben. Well, hello, Ben.

Oh, Ben.

It's good to see you.

Where you been?

You got some new place I don't know
nothing about?

Yeah.

Oh, oh.

The place he found was in my wagon.

Adam.

Last night after I decided to go,

I told Babe to get in my wagon.

Now, I know this is hard to believe, but
in the darkness, I didn't know it was

Ben.

Well, that's the easiest thing for me to
believe I've ever heard, Marvin. Oh?

Marvin, I think Jack's got something to
say to you.

Yeah.

Marvin, I, uh...

I owe you an apology. I... I misjudged
you.

Well, I think you can make up for it by
telling him about his drawings.

Oh, yeah.

The trading post took them in trade.

Well, not exactly.

But how would you like to make your
drawings and have them put into a book?

Are you serious?

Sure, I'm serious.

I ran into that Meriwether fellow down
at the settlement.

And he wants you to make your drawings
so he can put them in his maniac book.

Maniac book?

The whole thing sounds crazy to me.

Does that there stagecoach ticket look
crazy?

He wants you to come to St. Louis right
away.

The ticket looks genuine enough, all
right, all right.

Oh, no, no.

No, I... I couldn't desert Babe.

She needs me.

She's been doing just fine here, Adams.

But I can't take the wilderness with me.

Marvin, there's plenty of room out here
for another bear.

And Ben and I will be more than happy to
look out after her.

You know, Marvin, Babe's kind of like a
thoroughbred racehorse, you might say.

Her racing days are over.

It's time to give her a rest.

You got to put her out to pasture,
Marvin.

Yeah.
