Chad. I'm Rosalyn. And we have a two
-year -old daughter named Aurora.

Also, we have a cat named Zachary.

He is so loving and affectionate and
sweet and social, but he sprays

urine all over the house.

He likes to spray all over the pillows
and the back of the chair. And then he

has decided it would be fun to spray
into the closet.

When he sprays, it hits a lot of
pillows, bedding, carpet, walls.

Oh my gosh, gross.

He does use Litterbox, but he will still
spray while he's in Litterbox.

We're especially concerned about our
daughter, Aurora, because he does it in

room the most.

She's two. She's roaming around, putting
everything in her mouth and touching

everything. It concerns us for her
health and safety.

We just want our home back, our lives
back, and we want...

our daughter to be healthy and happy and
not have to worry about urine being all

over her room.

I'm meeting up with Rosalyn, Chad, their
daughter Aurora, and Zachary, a .k .a.

the pee machine.

Apparently, that boy is leaving his mark
all over this house.

Of course, that's why I'm here, right?

stress -wise, when she came along, he

being such a cat. He's like, you come

Is this kind of a Zacharias thing to be

It's very interesting to me because
usually the cat that I call them the

cats, right? The mojito cats are the
ones who meet you at the door. They're

like, come on in, have a mojito, that
kind of thing, right?

He's kind of a mojito cat in that way.
He's the one who greets, right?

Definitely. He's coming right up to me,
and he wants to be loved and pet and

whatever, walking up to everybody.

Not the one that you would expect who
would be doing all of the marking,

I mean, marking is an unconfident
expression of territorial horror.

Yeah, it's almost a bipolar kind of
thing. It is. I mean, it's actually a

weird dynamic.

Being this present, this mojito, that
he's going to come out here and just...

spread himself across the table. So this
is normal Zachary behavior.

Right off the bat, he is so friendly, so
present. I can't believe that he's the

cat who's peeing all over this house.

First things first, is Zachary neutered?
Yeah.

Okay, so we can rule that out. Now, how
did you guys wind up with Zachary? I was

working at an animal rescue sanctuary.

He actually got in a lot of fights
there.

Interesting. Yeah. He started getting
picked on there by some of the other

males. Ah, okay. Now that's important.

We open doors and windows. There are a
few neighbors. Yeah, I was about to say.

Did you notice I went... Yeah.

And we have feral cats out there, right?

Feral or neighborhood or belong to
anybody, do you know? I've tried to pay

attention to see, you know, if they go
into anybody's house, but these cats

seem to go everywhere. They go in
everybody's yards and in front of

house. Are they tame?

They tend to run away if we try to get
pretty close. So you haven't been able

touch anybody?

No. It didn't take long for me to start
putting the puzzle pieces together.

Zachary always peed when he was anxious,
but it was never all that much.

They moved here, and boom, it happened.
And when did it happen? Around

springtime, when it starts to thaw and
cats come out. Let's start looking

around. Show me all the places that
Zachary has peed up, which is apparently

lot.

He has peed in the corner of the couch.

This corner here?

It was between both of these.

Which spots Zachary likes to mark gives
me important clues to figure out why

this really confident cat feels like he
has to mark up the whole territory.

Using my black light, I can find stains
that have already even been cleaned up.

He can spray this high.

And that is really, it's like mom, the
house is on fire.

This will all help me formulate a plan
that will give this family some peace of

mind, hopefully.

You've never seen cats hanging out right

There's two different ways of marking.

that kind of thing. Very confident,

you've got Napoleon marking, over

-owning, and that's pee.

It's unconfident, it's territorially
threatened.

Going with this whole concept of mojito,
Zachary, right? So now we're into

Now he's the over -owner. Look, right?

He needs to be everywhere making sure
that everything is cool.

But that's confidence.

This is pretty major. Now, how many
times have you done this?

Right, but she never slept in here.

Having Aurora at two years old still
sleeping in their bed because Zachary's

peeing in her bed, it can't be normal.
And we can't let it continue to be

normal. Obviously, this is a very, very
important spot for him.

Otherwise, I wouldn't be getting this
kind of attention.

This isn't just love that I'm getting
from him. He has marked me from head to

toe. Cats are covered in scent glands,
right?

So when they rub up against you, whether
it's their side.

Right here between the eyes, in between
all of their pads, their scent glands.

So when they scratch, they're leaving
scent. When they butt up against you,

they're leaving scent. That is a
confident way of leaving scent.

Not, right? So that's what we're looking
at with him. What turns him into

Napoleon? Because the cat I'm meeting
right now is just uber mojito. See how

he's picking this spot here?

Look at what our view is, right? I know
something's going on out there.

Let me give you some homework. All the
fact -gathering is done for now, but I

got a theory, and now we got to test it.

So, my theory is Zachary is just
panicked territorially. He feels like

barbarians at the gate, and they're
busting through, and he's trying to warn

guys on a daily basis that the world is
not a safe place for him.

Now, the homework comes down to you guys
proving that theory.

The first step to that is detective
work. I need you guys to work the

neighborhood. I need you to figure
out...

who those cats belong to if they do also
detective wise you can also take the

black light that i'm going to give you
and document every spot in the house

he pees i'm going to give you guys a
motion activated camera that hooks into

your wi -fi all you got to do is set it
up and just monitor it and that way this

time of day you're going to get your
evidence and what they're doing and how

they're torturing this guy the second
part of the homework is catification I'd

like to get a bed of some sort right on
Aurora's bed. Give him that place of

ownership at ground zero. See where he's
sitting right now? That's one of his

favorite spots.

Okay, because he's soaking scent in
there and he can see out there. Any

that he can put himself, I want his
scent strong in there.

Cats need signposts that represent
confident ownership of territory.

Scent soakers, litter boxes, food
dishes, blankets, beds, scratchers,

All these things where a cat can walk
by, smell themselves, and go, I own this

place. If the top part of this house has
nothing that says cat, what's he going

to do? He's going to put his mark down
when he feels insecure.

I'm Sheila. I have a beautiful black cat
with a miniature head and big yellow

eyes. She's eight years old. I've had
her since she was pretty much born.

I found her about a day old.

And she's been naughty ever since.

Her name is Freddy Krueger.

Freddie loves to attack me when I'm in
the bathroom, going to the bathroom,

brushing my teeth. Even sitting in the
bathtub, she will come up and give me a

little swash.

I've woken up to her biting my face and
pulling my hair at the same time.

If you even touch her, she will draw
blood.

Friends come over and I fear for them
being attacked.

How many times did she get you in there?

I don't know too many times to count.
I've been on very few dates in the past

eight years because of Freddie's
personality.

I don't know how much longer I can live
like this.

She's pretty much a nightmare.

I'm heading in for my first visit with
Sheila and her cat, Freddy Krueger. Yes,

and just like Freddy Krueger, her
namesake, she is the master of

causing nightmares all throughout this
home and spilling a lot of blood in the

process. So hopefully I can end the
bloodshed before I get my blood shed.

Where's Freddy? She's right under here.

Freddy, uh... Hi,

Freddy.

Meeting Freddie the first time, I just
get the impression that she's a scared

cat, that she doesn't trust her
environment right now because there's a

in it.

Oh, so we have two cats. We have Freddie
and... The captain.

The captain. Hey, captain.

Just wondering, did you name Freddie
before or after her Freddiness came out

her? I named her before because I found
her in the boiler room.

Freddie Krueger's from the boiler room.
Uh -huh. And you've had her since she

was what?

Since she was about one day old.

Really? A bottle baby.

The problem here is that Freddie was
brought up without her mother, without

litter mates, and with very limited
exposure to other humans.

As a result, Freddie was left with no
other option than to mirror Sheila.

Captain is like, Freddie, why are you
being so chicken?

She attacks mainly people who try to put
their hands in her face or they try to

pet her.

Do people just sort of...

They insist on doing that? Yeah, it's
kind of like, you know, you want what

can't have.

It's like, please don't touch my cat.

And, you know, they want to touch her.
And they think I'm crazy because I tell

them not to.

But I have to do this because, you know,
I got to figure out what makes Freddy,

Freddy. Hey, Freddy Krueger.

Sheila's telling me that Freddy has a
real aversion to being touched by

strangers. And when I make my own
attempt to touch Freddy, she scampers

So it appears to be true. But what
Sheila and her friends need to

that it's okay not to want to be
touched. It's not terribly abnormal.

Freddie may have some real issues, but
this one doesn't make her a nightmare by

any means.

day because I do always usually have

made after she has killed me. I'm

a good picture painted of who Freddie
is, but now I want to see what the

territory has to say to me. I want to
see the hot spots where Freddie seems to

act up the most and maybe things will
start making sense to me.

Here she throws tantrums. Why? She bites
her own feet and screams and hisses on

her own. Wait, wait, wait, wait.

Yeah, because she does it every time I
have someone over, biting her on the

and screaming and throwing her tantrum.
And she also does it if I'm on the phone

or if I'm watching TV.

The fact that there is a situational
connection, that every time Freddie

Sheila's undivided attention, she throws
this tantrum, and then, of course,

Sheila gives her what she wants, makes
this a very obvious thing. Sheila is

creating a conditioned response.

Freddie knows that if she does this
action, tantrum or not, she gets this as

result, whatever that payoff is.

So when you're sleeping, what does she
do? Show me.

She starts by pressing her face here and
licking my nose. It used to be

biting my nose very hard.

Ow!

And you stopped her from doing that? I
stopped her from doing that. How did you

do that? Well, I used to just shove her
off of me and tell her, no, Freddie.

No, hey, hey, no.

But I don't feel like I can do that to
her when she's just licking my nose,

obviously.

Obviously.

There's nothing obvious about that
statement at all. But she's kissing my

so I feel bad. Oh, this is going to be
difficult. Okay, okay, okay.

What Sheila doesn't realize is that her
tolerance of all of Freddie's behaviors

is actually exacerbating the problem.

And then I wanted to show you the other
hot spot, if we're doing hot spots.

Let's do it. I sit down, I go to the
restroom, and she bites my butt from

side. What do you do when she does this?

I've learned to just go like this and
sort of almost play with it. So she gets

me like three times. Sometimes she gets
me a little hard. Sheila, seriously?

Now, if Sheila were to just say no, this
would probably stop.

But instead, she offers up her foot as
an alternate toy.

That's not the way this is going to
work.

I want to meet up with Freddie. I want
to see how comfortable she is with me

how she acts towards strangers.

Hey, babe.

I can kiss her almost any time of the
day with my face.

You know what I mean? Like if I do this.

But I wouldn't dare touch her butt with
my hands.

You're telling me that if I put my hands
in, she'll scratch and hiss and

whatever. But if I put my face in, she
won't. Exactly.

As long as there's no hands involved.

Now, if Sheila is right in saying that
Freddie is generally put off by touching

and petting but doesn't mind nuzzling
humans, well, that tells me a lot about

Freddie. So I want to try it. But on the
other hand, a lot of Sheila's notions

about Freddie have been suspect at best.

Clearly, she's a little on edge.

Give her some room to breathe a little
bit. I feel like I've spent enough time

trapping her in a corner. So in this
challenge line, I have learned the hard

way. Face, hands, it doesn't matter.

Freddie is just not comfortable with
anybody besides Sheila getting close to

her. Now, first thing that we're going
to do.

is to ignore unwanted behaviors.

The thing about bottle babies is that
they are the most individual of cats,

right? Because you bring them up just
with you. You've got a very specific set

of behaviors that's a product of you
guys having your own language together.

So I think that we've got to start with
you. And starting with you is rewarding

behavior.

Looking at all these pictures that
Sheila's friend has drawn over the years

gives me an idea in order to better
convey the homework that Sheila must do

Freddie. We're going to start with this
one.

When you sleep.

So you are used to, in the morning,
before the sun comes up, having teeth in

your nose, which you said no to. Now
it's a tongue up your nose, which is

not fun and not comfortable and very
smelly. Well, that's not going to happen

anymore. You're going to completely
ignore her, not say her name, not get up

feed her, not do anything.

Don't engage her when she does this
routine with you. Here, better example,

right? This, the tantrum.

Kids throw tantrums.

Because they get a desired result.

The day that mom stops rewarding the
tantrum, they stop doing it. She's not

hurting herself, but she's causing you
to freak out and do something to assuage

her. You're not going to do that
anymore. You're going to totally ignore

okay? Number two is play therapy.

For every time that you say no, this is
not going to give you payoff, there's

got to be a creative yes. Whether it's a
scratching post, game playing time,

feeding, rewarding the silence.

Those kind of things. Okay? Yep. And
last assignment is to instill friendly

boundaries. If your friends want to pet
a cat, we got Captain right here. He's a

petty cat.

It's time for me to talk to the
neighbors. Chad and Rosalyn have too

invested in this neighborhood to be up
in people's faces, and guess what? I

don't. I just want answers.

So I am working with your neighbors way
down there. Okay.

And I'm trying to locate two cats.

Okay. Black cat, gray cat.

Oh, they're mine.

And they're causing a big problem. Okay.
They just hang out and make themselves

at home. We have a cat inside their
house who has completely destroyed the

to help fix the problem

Okay. So tell me about your cats.
They're indoor -outdoor. So my cats have

ability to go in and out of the garage.
I have a heated garage for them. He's

reacting so strongly to these guys.

There's no legal thing that we can't
keep the cats outside.

So here in Colorado, an outdoor cat is
considered free roaming, which means

can't be picked up by animal control
unless they're sick, injured, or have

attacked somebody.

They're allowed to just kind of roam.

I mean, this conversation is
frustrating. It's really frustrating. I

you're going to let your cat out here in
the middle of the night with all these

coyotes around here? I mean, I don't get
it. It has to go out at night. They

have always been outdoor cats.

There's no legal thing that we can't
keep the cats outside.

They're allowed to just kind of roam. It
has to go out at night. They have

always been outdoor cats.

There's nothing I can hold over
anybody's head.

It's absolutely up to the human. If she
wants to let her cats roam around

outside in coyote country, it's up to
her.

Probably have to do stuff to keep them
out of the yard.

The nature of cat diplomacy with
neighbors is you shoot for the stars and

settle for what you can get.

Today, I'm not even sure we got off the
runway.

She's a very nice person, but I've dealt
with enough people that I know that

there's no changing her mind, and it is
so frustrating.

This could all be solved if the cats
were kept inside, and that ain't gonna

happen.

Let's start with what I discovered at
your neighbor's house. I cannot convince

her to keep those cats inside, okay?

Really?

That's disappointing.

It is not okay for these cats to come
into your yard and say, yo, litter box,

and create a second home. Not good. So
we're going to use deterrents to create

boundary. One of them sprays water,
okay? So every time a cat comes from a

certain angle, bang, they just get hit
with some water. They're going to define

boundaries around their yard with
deterrents, and it's a training tool.

cats will come into this yard three,
four, five times. Every time they get

sprayed, they'll stop coming around.

Next thing that we're going to do is
complete your catification, okay? All of

the cat stuff is still downstairs for
the most part, but it's time to

everybody, right, and start bringing it
upstairs.

Your room has got to be catified, okay?

I'd like you to put a litter box in your
bedroom, okay?

If the stakes are high enough for you,
you'll find a way to make it work.

Finally, it's time to push Zachary's
challenge line. Have you ever harness

trained him at all?

No. The first step is just to get him
used to it.

You put it on, you give him treats, you
take it off.

Within a week, you'll have him trained
to the point where you can take him

outside. I want him to be able to take
control of his territory.

If you can get him into a harness and
take him out to that front yard, he goes

out there, smells what the other cats
have turned into a litter box, and he

goes. That's his challenge. Go outside,
claim your space in a constructive way

so that you don't have to over -own it,
over -claim it inside.

been going on here and see if Freddie's

behavior has changed at all.

part of it was the play, right? Yeah. So

wanted to make sure that you're draining
energy out of her so she doesn't have

all that built -up energy in the first
place.

She won't play with those darn toys.

I feel like when I'm doing this, she's
more interested in, oh, what's that?

What are you doing with that part of it?
I think that what you want to do is

take it from this motion to that
sneaking motion so that it's a toy that

around on the floor.

All cats will play. You just have to
find that sweet spot with them. Well,

really hard to say.

But we can work with Freddie to interact
with humans more positively. It just

won't be based around petting.

I don't want Freddie more than anything
to associate.

to associate me with something positive,

There's a great little combination here
of her seeing Captain and also seeing a

hand in a way she's never seen it
before.

Nothing feels better than when all of
the lessons that I brought to the table

can be summed up in one moment, and
that's Freddy taking food off my finger.

changes who Freddy is perceived to be.
It changes how Sheila approaches her

and it should change how Sheila allows
her friends to approach her cat as well.

Now we have proven that Freddy isn't,
you know, the Freddy Krueger that...

We think she is. The more that Freddie
has experiences like the one we just

she's going to start trusting people.

So over time, she's going to learn to
accept touch from humans.

Just remember to keep using food as a
motivator.

The outlook for her future is great
because I'm going to keep working with

I'm going to do everything that I can to
make her even better.

I really feel good about where she's
gotten to and you as well.

Draven. When we brought Draven home and
people would come visit us in the house

and he would go up and think, you know,
they came to see me.

That's just how he is.

I realized very early on that he didn't
mind being around strangers, so we would

take him to visit patients in the
hospital, and he just kind of got into

rhythm of, hey, we're going to see
people, and bring that little bit of

happiness into their room. This is
Draven.

Look at him, man. He does make room.

He loves to give foot massages.

It's amazing to me. He takes no time at
all to adjust to anything.

Sometimes if you give him a treat, he'll
come up and go get a lick. It's

incredible. We've had a lot of practice,
a lot of different situations, so he's

used to a lot of different things.

Draven seems to enjoy doing the therapy
work. Nothing really seems to rattle

him. It just makes him feel a little
better about having to be in the

Watching Draven at work today shows me
that therapy animals are not just... a

luxury. They should be seen as a
necessity.

him, and not only physically is there
measurable benefit, but there's also

emotional benefit of being a little bit

I'm back in Colorado for my final visit
with Ted and Rosalind. Now, neighborhood

cats have been coming into their yard
and tormenting their cat, Zachary, to

point where he's peeing all over the
house.

And then my hope walking in today is
that the homework I assigned works,

is feeling fully confident, and the
marking has stopped. We had a lot going

the last time I was here. Let's start by
taking a look at your video homework.

you guys are putting out some deterrent.

Glad to see Chad and Rosalyn putting out
the deterrent. There's no way of saying

that the cats didn't come around. But

bottom line is that the video shows that
no other cats are coming around, which

is great.

Well, so far, so good. I'm happy that
Chad and Rosalyn have taken me seriously

in regards to the harness training
Zachary. And now he can leave his mark

outside, which is good for his
confidence, and keeps the other cats

And I hope that means that the peeing
has stopped inside.

So apparently, after taking a break from
peeing in this room for a while,

Handed it on the counter right here and
sprayed.

Man, Aurora's room and other places
around the house are just hit like

no tomorrow. I mean, obviously, Zachary
felt really threatened. We've got to get

to the bottom of this.

What could have been going on that could
have set him off? The day before that.

We had been in the storage area and were
pulling out old boxes and bins.

Okay. And the last time that it was out
was in our house in Florida, and we had

foster cats at the time. Oh, God.

He had been doing pretty well since he
left up until that point. Yeah.

So that could have been a trigger. We
have now put... deterrents outside, he's

going outside, all this stuff we can
totally zero in on. This is why we do

work. At the end of this, the three of
us sit down and we say, this makes

this makes sense, but does it make
sense?

Is it a rational response to stimuli?

No. We know Zachary has peed multiple
places and multiple times since my last

time here. We did everything that we
could to try to solve the problem, and

the end of all that, he still needs a
little bit of help. I think I've had a

realization recently that

Being at the sanctuary and being around
the other cats that bullied him so much,

it's sort of like PTSD that he has from
that. And, you know, sometimes people

need meds and sometimes animals need
meds too.

Zachary is post -traumatic. He is
suffering from PTSD.

He had a really bad start to his life,
which included being completely

terrorized by many other cats.

Now he's perceiving that that's
happening again.

alarm system is completely out of whack.

In his mind, the world is still on fire.

The only solution in my book is that we
put him on a short course of meds. Just

for long enough to decrease his anxiety
to the point that he can see the world

is safe.

And then hopefully, we won't need the
meds anymore.

It would be really easy for you to take
the P at face value and go, we've gotten

nowhere. And I hope you know that.

You've gotten really, really far. I feel
like there's been an amazing amount of

progress in this home. And if you had to
look at one huge piece of progress,

it's in the guardian.

These guys know their cat so much better
now than they did before.

I have so much faith in Chad and
Rosalyn, and I have faith in Zachary.

going to keep working, and after a
couple weeks, we're going to check back

see where he's at.

Okay. We've really gotten to know him a
whole lot better, and now we can get him

feeling better.

degree of this house, especially with a

young child whose room is being
targeted, it's really stressful.

These guys came through in an amazing
way, and we know this cat better than we

ever did, and now we can make the world
better for him. That's the important

thing.
