They call me Mad Jack.

And if there's anybody in these
mountains that knows the real story of

Adams, that'd be me.

So I'm putting it down and writing just
the way it happened in hopes of setting

the record straight.

Now, my friend Adams was accused of a
crime he didn't commit.

So he escaped into the mountains,
leaving behind the only life that he

knew.

Now, that wilderness out there ain't no
place for a greenhorn, and his chances

of surviving were mighty slim.

There was no time at all, for he was
beaten down, ragged, and nearly stopped.

Long about then, he come upon a grizzly
bear cub, all alone and helpless.

Now, Adams knew that little critter
couldn't survive without his help, so he

started right down that cliff, risking
his own life to save it.

Now that cub took to Adams right off.

And that was when he discovered he had a
special kind of way with animals.

They just come right up to him like he
was a natural part of the wilderness.

But that bear cub, he was extra special.

As he growed, he became the best friend
Adams ever had. And together, they

became a legend.

There's a time we'll call our own.
Living free in harmony and majesty.

Living in the wilderness has lots of
pleasures to it. Especially if you've

hankering for good eating.

Like... Fresh honey from the hive for
your morning flapjacks or your evening

flapjacks. New ripe apples from the hill
country. Well, there's enough juice in

one bite to float a canoe.

But I reckon my favorite is them
blueberries.

Just right for making my special
weakness, blueberry pie.

Adam's had a mighty taste for it, too.
Not to mention Ben.

So, every year...

When them wild blueberries was just
busting with goodness, Adams would make

two -day trip to Berry Valley and load
up with them, knowing that I'd be along

to do the baking when he got back.

But in the wilderness, well, a lot of
things can happen in two days.

I know you're tired, Ben, but we've
still got a long way to go.

All right.

I guess we can take a little breather.

Calm your bones, Ben.

We gotta save these berries for Jack's
special blueberry pie.

First the berries go into the filling,
and then the pies will be a filling you.

Doesn't that sound like a dandy idea?

I just quit messing with that pack.

that you don't believe is there?

These tracks were like nothing I've ever
seen before.

I tell you, they were... They were
unholy. Well, then I'm going to go find

unholy tracks.

I'm going to go find me a monster.

One with yellow eyes and purple tongue.

It was purple eyes and a yeller.

You probably couldn't find them tracks
anyway.

Well, I'm going to do the best I can.

It's got to be something natural.

It's got to be a natural thing you say.

Can't be nothing else.

Hold on, Adams.

Now, in all my years out in the
mountains, I never heard tell of no

running about.

But I knowed for sure that what I saw
was more than just an ugly buffalo.

Call it what you will.

But whatever it was, I didn't have no
hankering to go looking for it.

Of course, I couldn't let Adams know
that.

He was dependent on me to protect him in
case he got in a tight spot.

Now, it was right about in here

that thing come thundering out of the
bushes at me.

What's that?

Maybe that thing's eyes weren't exactly
purple. It was probably more like blue

with just a touch of devil fire in them.
The precise color don't matter anyhow.

What matters is that thing was out there
and we was walking thumb smack dab into

its territory like a couple of dummies.

You sure take a heap of convincing.

You still believe there's something out

I never thought I'd run into anybody

We go out looking for some monster and
what do we find?

We find a bird and a tree.

Ben comes out of the bushes.

We see some man waving a stick and
yelling something.

Yelling at something that ain't even
there.

And you can call me stubborn without
even flinching.

Now I can talk to somebody sensible.

This old codger here's a -funnin' with

Because I won't swallow his tall tale
about some monster in the forest.

if he can't tell the difference.

Jack says that there's a monster out
there somewhere.

Well, he's having hallucin...

But when the coma tells him that there's
a monster out there, why, it's a gospel

truth.

You think for him I'm good -natured.

I'm still gonna bake them pies because I
promised you and I promised Ben.

And I promised me.

Now, don't you two argue. There'll be
enough for everybody.

Jack, Nekoma just told me that Grey Wind
thinks there's a monster in the forest

and he's gone to track it and kill it.
Well, that's a good idea.

Now, I don't know anybody, white man or
Indian, that's as good as Grey Wind when

it comes to tracking and hunting in the
woods.

Well, I want to find him before he does.

Why bother?

Why not just let Grey Wind kill it?

Because it ain't reasonable, that's why.

He thinks it's a devil beast.

He figures it stole his grandfather's
spirit because he heard the thing of

bellowing when the old man died.

The only way he can release his
grandfather's spirit is to track it and

I ain't gonna ask Nakoma to go because I
got respects for his belief.

The deeper we got into the woods, the
more spooked I'd become.

Suppose it was just as well that we
didn't know that stranger was also

around out there.

It would have made me as jumpy as a fly
on a horse's ear. I was dead sure that

fellow was a lawman, or worse yet, a
bounty hunter.

And for Adams...

That spells more trouble than any
monster.

Adams!

There's your prints.

They look like they're fresh ones.

Now, if you want my advice, Adams...

we'll go back to the cabin and wait for
it to show up there, that is, if it ever

does. Jack, I'm telling you, there ain't
no monster out here.

Oh, of course.

There's no weird monster. The birds are
jumping out of their feathers, three

-toed tracks from no critter that's ever
been in these parts, and a banshee

howl, and branches broke off of trees
with no claw marks.

Of course there's no monster. I know
there's got to be a reasonable answer

it.

I just can't wait to hear it.

Now, that weren't the wind whistling
through the trees.

Tacoma, stay with Ben and Jack. I'm

Critters are only afraid of things that
they don't know.

It's funny how animals take to one
another.

I've seen Ben do it all the time.

Well, I certainly do appreciate your
hospitality, but me and High Jolly got

Then he stuck his head up. He kept

laughing at me, saying I couldn't hit

doors closed.

Well, sir, I must have shot 50 balls and
a pound of powder.

After a while, he quit sticking his head
up.

I went around that log.

You know what I found? I found a whole
wagon load of rattlesnakes with their

head shot off.

That's the truth.

She's coming after High Jolly.

I gotta get her away from here. No,
that'd be the worst thing you could do.

He's just trying to spook you. I don't

mountain man.

great warriors, so High Jolly can't be

He said that evil spirits often use
trickery to save their own lives.

You know the great bear spirit wouldn't
protect something that's evil.

Now that critter that's in there has got
to have a good spirit, too.

Mr. Adams, what in the world? It's right
nice the way critters take care of one

another.

I know when we set our mind to doing
something, we get blind to a lot of

things.

I know you thought you were doing the
right thing.

I want you to go back to your people
proud.

I just darn near saved your life.

Many moons from now, your children's
children will be singing songs of you.

and how you eased their mind and proved
that there was no devil beast.

What if Gray Wind hadn't taken hold of
that rope?
