The story of Grizzly Adams is big and
powerful and beautiful.

They call me Mad Jack.

And me and my burl number seven been
traipsing these slopes and valleys for a

long spell. So I know the story from the
beginning. My friend Adams was accused

of a crime he didn't commit.

So he escaped into the mountains,
leaving behind the only life that he

knew.

Now, that wilderness out there ain't no
place for a greenhorn, and his chances

of surviving were mighty slim.

There was no time at all, for he was
beaten down, ragged, and nearly starved.

Long about then, he come upon a grizzly
bear cub, all alone and helpless.

Now, Adams knew that little critter
couldn't survive without his help, so he

started right down that cliff, risking
his own life.

To save it.

Now that cub took to Adams right off.

And that was when he discovered he had a
special kind of way with animals.

They just come right up to him like he
was a natural part of the wilderness.

But that bear cub, he was extra special.

As he grew, he became the best friend
Adams ever had. And together, they

a legend.

like to call these my mountains.

But if the truth be told, I guess they
rightly belong to the trees and the

streams and the animals who was here
first.

Yep, there was a time when this place,
like the rest of the world, was a garden

of Eden.

Then along came men, all sorts of men,
some that didn't think the animals had a

right to live free and easy the way it
was intended.

But there was other men who cared a heap
about the animals, like my friend James

Adams. He just naturally figured if
things ain't right with the animals,

owed it to nature to do what he could to
set things straight.

But I recall there was one time when
setting things straight came mighty

Now, what do you plan on doing with that
wood, Ben?

You gonna help me?

Well,

I'll be.

I've seen everything now.

But, Ben, you remember this is your
idea, not mine.

everything. A fine, upstanding grizzly
bear turned into a woodchopper.

I didn't ask him to do that, Jack. He
did this on his own.

The next thing you know, that green
hornet is going to have poor old Ben in

harness and making him into a plow
horse.

Now, you know better than that. I can't
make nothing out of Ben.

He's going to do darn well what he
pleases.

You found this up by Summit Ridge?

You think there's more of them?

You can bet your cross -cut saw they is.

Well, how do you know there's more?

Because I know the man that made this.

A fellow named Trapper Tom.

And he don't do nothing unless he does
it in big way.

Look at that.

There ain't nobody makes them any
slicker.

Well, I guess you and I ought to get up
to Summer Ridge and bust up as many of

these things as we can find.

You mean as I can find?

Now, you remember Trapper Tom. I've told
you hundreds of stories about him. I

know all the stories about Trapper Tom.

Well, then you know there's only one man
in these mountains that can outsmart

him, and you're looking at him.

Besides, I've got to protect you in the
coma.

From what? These traps?

This here is only a come on.

You can bet your bottom dollar that
wherever he found this, it's just

with traps.

Biggins. And each one more terrible and
clever than the next one.

And he makes bear traps, too.

Because that used to be his specialty.

You know, I think it'd be a lot easier
on all of us if we just let him go along

with us.

No, sir.

There ain't no way that mean old number
seven is going to let you and the coma

traipse around these mountains with
Trapper Tom afoot.

Wait, are you coming?

Ben had heard so many stories about
Trapper Tom, he wasn't about to be left

behind.

Did I ever tell you about the time I
first come to these mountains? That was

long before you, number seven.

The old Trapper Tom and me were the last
two contestants in a blanket shootout

up on Flat Mason.

What's the matter, Ben? You heard that
story of four?

That bear's gonna get himself in trouble
going off by himself like that.

Like I've been telling you, Jack.

Ben can take care of himself, and he
does what he pleases.

Well,

he didn't listen to one word I told him
about Trapper Tom.

I tell you, Tom's dangerous.

Now, what's the matter with you?

Now, are you going to come or are you
afraid I'm going to tell them about all

the good burrows I had before I found
you?

All right. Just come at your own pace.

Well, don't just stand there looking
stupid.

We'll get you out right quick, Jack.

Ben hadn't left for no reason.

That nose of his smelled an animal being
somewhere it shouldn't be.

In big trouble.

And the trouble was a pit trap made by
Trapper Tom.

And the animal in it was a mountain
lion.

Hurt real bad.

All Ben could do was tell her to rest
easy while Steve went for help. Are you

all right?

Yeah, I think I'm all right. Just get me
out of here.

Give a chase.

Why'd I step in it?

I'll tell you why I stepped in it.

It's to show you, Greenhorn, what could
happen if you're not watching every

minute.

Well, you know, if I hadn't have stepped
in that, one of you might have stepped

in it and got hurt real bad.

Oh, that Tom, he's a sly devil.

Meanwhile... Ben was a -running about as
fast as a bear can run, looking for us.

This man looks like he's been here for
over a year.

All right, Ben, I'll come with you.

A lot of help you were, number seven.

Why didn't you tell me that thing was
there?

Let's catch up.

Ben brung Adams and Nekoma direct to
that pit.

It's a mountain lion, Nekoma. It looks
like it's hurt really bad.

You better come down with me.

You took quite a fall, didn't you?

Looks like she hit her head on these
rocks.

Lucky she's alive at all.

Is she hurt bad?

Yeah, she's hurt awful bad, Jack.

We're gonna have to make a travel voice
and get her out of here and get her back

to the cabin.

You're going to be all right.

But I don't want you to give up.

You hang on, you hear?

Jack, throw me down your canteen.

That's okay. That's just Jack and the
coma with the Travois.

And we're going to take you with us.

We're going to put you on this Travois
and take you back to the cabin.

But you've got to help us.

You've got to want to live, so you hang
on, okay?

All of us.

Even Ben knowed that Cougar was hurt
about as bad as it were possible to be

hurt. It was going to take all the love
and skill that Adams had.

Plus maybe a lot of luck to Odin to save
her life.

Adams figured she had a fighting chance
if we could get her back to the cabin.

I think we got to her just in time.

All we can do for now is just keep her
nice and quiet.

Hope she gets her strength back.

Try and get a little food into her.

Now, I think she was trapped in that pit
for about two or three days.

Ben,

if it weren't for you, she wouldn't be
alive right now.

I'll be.

What? She's a recent mom.

She is?

But there weren't no cub back there
where we found her.

I know it, Jack.

That means that there's a little lost
mountain lion cub out there in the

wilderness.

Alone and lost and frightened.

That poor cub was calling out for its
mama and wondering where she was.

Good morning, Ben.

How's she doing?

I can't get any food in her.

But she's still hanging on.

You know, it's like she hasn't decided
whether she wants to live or not.

You're thinking about that cub, ain't
you?

Yeah.

I think if we could find that cub, it'd
give her a reason to live.

Now, just a minute. You're not going
anywhere.

Not without me, you ain't.

Now, we'll start it to pit, and we'll
track that cub, and we'll find it.

That is, if it's still alive.

I think that that cub will have a lot
better chance if all three of us look

it. Now, just a minute.

You've been up all night.

Besides, somebody should stay here and
look after her.

I've done all I can do for her, Jack.

All I can do is just leave her some food
and water.

What she really needs is that cub of
hers.

You're right, Nekoma.

The cub was here.

Those horse prints and the man's
footprints are fresh.

I'd say they aren't more than an hour or
two old.

Look at those heel marks.

There's only one man I know wears a boot
like that. That's Trapper Tom.

Yes, sir. Tom's afoot in these
mountains, and that means trouble for

We got good reason to believe that
Trapper Tom was here.

But how do we know he found that cub?

You're right, Nicoma, this is fresh.

This trap had to be set sometime this
morning.

Well, this is one trap.

It ain't gonna keep a poor cub on the
wall.

Adams, there's something bothering me.

What's that, Jack?

Now, if Tom didn't catch that cub and it
doesn't look like he did, is it dead or

alive?

Well, how about if we split up?

If you take the summit ridge?

Ben, I want you to take the high
country, you hear?

Nakoma, you go check all the water
holes.

I'm going to go back to the cabin, Jack.
I got an idea I want to try.

What kind of an idea?

We know the cub was here.

I'm going to take some of this dirt.
Maybe she can pick up its scent.

Well, that's pretty long odds. That
scent's cold.

Yeah, I know, Jack.

That animal's got a real keen sense of
smell.

If that cougar could just pick up her
cub's scent, that might make all the

difference in the world.

Well, at least why is it give her
something to hang on to until we can

cub? I'm going back to the cabin.

Meanwhile, by some miracle, that cub
were still alive.

But it wasn't Nicoma, Meen, or Ben who'd
seen it first.

It were a pair of coyotes.

If ever a cub needed its mama, it was
then.

But that cub had an instinct for
survival.

And he scampered off hoping somebody or
something would come along and kind of

even things up a bit.

Well, about that time, old Ben had
picked up its scent. And it sure

have come at a better time.

Ben scared them coyotes away, but when
he looked for the cub, it had skittered

away too.

So Ben put his nose to work again and
tried to pick up the little one's trail.

Well,

would you look at that.

A bear trap.

Unless I miss my guess, that's a worker
trapper, Tom.

Yes, sir.

Uh -huh.

See there, number seven?

He's got it baited with honeycomb.

Some poor old unsuspecting bear comes
along here.

Goes inside, thinking he's going to
satisfy his sweet tooth.

And the minute he touches that
honeycomb, wham!

That meat falls down and he's locked in.

That cage is made out of solid logs.

It's worse than the jail cell.

Here, I'll show you.

Now, don't be scared.

Well,

you see that, number seven?

Looks like old Tom's lost his touch.

He made this here trap out of green
logs.

Now they're so dried out and shrunk up
that the door won't even close.

Well, I tell them down to Rendezvous how
I out -foxed old Trapper Tom.

Well,

had some left over, did he?

So that old codger made himself a double
-wheelie spare trap,

huh?

How about all the dirty, cantankerous
things for a man to do?

Butting one of Tom's bear traps.

I gotta get out of here.

Can't let anybody find out about this.

I'll be the laughing stock of all the
high country.

I'm sorry, girl.

We haven't found your cub yet.

Are Ben and Jack in a coma?

They're still looking for her.

I brought some of this dirt back.

I want you to take a good smell of it
and see if you can pick up your cup's

scent.

Meanwhile,

I was recognizing something, too.

I was in real trouble, and I know who to
thank for it.

get out, you're going to have to answer
me personal.

That is, if I get out.

But if we don't find that cover of hers,
I don't think she's going to make it.

I don't know where they are.

I'm not worried about Ben. He can take
care of himself.

And anybody that's been around the
mountains as long as Jack has, he knows

to stay out of trouble.

old Mad Jack a favor, huh?

Now, you remember all those many
kindnesses I did for you, all that good

and nice care?

Now, how would you like to repay old Mad
Jack for that, huh?

Now, if you'd like to show old Mad Jack
that there's no hard feelings,

you just move right over here, huh?

And let old Mad Jack get into that pack
and get his hands onto that hatchet.

Then he could chop his way out of here.

Now that cougar cub

didn't stay out of trouble very long.

Because coyotes ain't noted for giving
up.

They had found that cub again, and this
time they was determined to do something

about it.

It sure looked like it was all over for
that little fella when once more old Ben

came by just in the nick of time.

Poor Ben.

He had found the little cub and he knew
the little fella should be with his

alien mom.

He could leave the cub and go get Adams,
but not with those coyotes out there.

All Ben could do was stay where he was,
standing guard and hoping that things

would be better in the morning.

What are you doing here? Get on out of
here.

Ain't you never seen a fella in a cage
before?

Do you want to know who I am? I'll tell
you who I am. I'm a mountain man. My

name is Mad Jack, and I'm a friend to
all critters.

Like my friend Adams and his blood
brother Nicomar.

And there ain't no call to make faces at
me. It ain't neighboring.

See?

One of you couldn't drag that knife over
here for me, could you?

I didn't think so.

Oh, thank you, Hawk.

It ain't that I'm hungry or nothing, but
this old stomach of mine has got kind

of used to eating regular.

And I finished the last of the honey
this morning.

Or, say, Hawk, let's not say anything to
Adams about this, hmm?

I wouldn't want him to think that old
Mad Jack couldn't get out of a bear trap

by himself.

That cougar cub was still alive in the
morning because Ben stayed there all

night protecting it.

So when the cub up and moseyed along,
Ben knew it were looking for his mama.

There was only one thing Ben could do.

Follow it best he could and see that the
cub stayed out of trouble.

Ben kept bellering now and again, hoping
one of his human friends might hear it.

Hi, fellas.

You haven't seen a little mountain lion
cub around, have you?

Well, for that matter, how about a big
old grizzly?

Well, I suppose not.

I hope Nekoma's having better luck than
I am.

Lucky for me, it was Nekoma who number
seven come across first.

Number seven.

I knew you'd come back. Where are you?

I doing in here? I'll tell you what I'm
doing in here. I just got here a while

ago and there was some honeycombs in
here. And I'm looking for some more of

them. I don't want no innocent bear
coming along, wandering in here and

caught. Because he'd never be able to
get out.

Well, there's something there.

It appears I sprained my wrist a little
bit here.

Would you open the door for me? I don't
think I can make it.

Well, once it got out here in the fresh
mountain there, it cured up just like

that.

This mountain men, we don't hurt for
very long.

I don't want you falling in any traps or

snares. You got to keep a sharp eye out
to avoid them.

Ben was happy to see the little cub
taking some water.

He was mighty thirsty himself, but
calling out for human help come first.

Poor little critter. You've been through
a lot, ain't you?

Yeah, but now his ma ain't here.

We know. She's gone when we got back
here. We've been out looking for her.

He's got the scent of his ma.

And now your ma's out there looking for
you somewhere.

Adams, you know about these things.

The condition she was in, what chance
she got?

Her chances aren't good, Jack.

Not good at all.

Almost as if that cub knew what Adams
was saying.

Did you hear that?

The coma's picked up your mama's trail.

Let's get going.

Don't look like she's moving too good,

I just hope we can reach her before

That mama cougar was a gainin' on

Trapper Tom.

Drawn to him by the scent of her cub on
his shirt.

Now she was attracting Tom.

The hunter had become the hunted.

When Tom saw all

those critters moving along, he didn't
connect it with a dangerous cougar being

in the neighborhood.

He figured he was just lucky to find so
many small animals in the area just

waiting to be caught.

But for Trapper Tom Johnson, that day
was just business as usual.

Those horse prints and shoe prints,
those belong to Trapper Tom and his

That mountain lion's following right
behind him.

Suppose she could be tracking him?

I mean, why would she be tracking him
when she's looking for her cub?

I don't know, Jack.

You suppose it's possible that Tom could
have picked this cougar cub up and got

the cub sent on himself and that's why
he's following him?

Could be.

Jack, does Tom carry a rifle?

You bet he does.

And he's a crack shot, too. At least he
was.

Well, he's the second best shot in these
mountains until he become the second

best trapper.

Well, as weak as that cougar is, if he
wounds it, we're going to have to move

fast.

This little guy just might be an orphan
by nightfall. Let's get going.

trying to find that little cub of hers.

all my little animals loose?

get back to where they come from.

beads or just soon plant corn.

the animals.

But since I already quit trapping for
pelts, now I'm gonna stop taking them

for the zoos.

I just don't know what I'm going to do.

Tom, my home here, well, it's kind of
become a place for sick and lost

And when they wander off from their old
kind, well, I take them in.

But that still leaves them orphans to
these here mountains.

And I was thinking that, well, maybe you
could take a few of these little

critters down to the city with you.

Hey. That makes it a whole lot easier
than me having to go out trapping them.

Yeah, I like that idea.

New homes for your homeless critters.

But are you sure you'd be willing to
turn these little orphans over to me?

Well, it's going to be on one condition.

And you promise me that you don't put
them in any cages.

And that you let them live in the open
like nature intended.

Promise?

That's a good idea.

And knowing old Tom's way with animals,
he'd have them so those kids could pet

them.

And the ones I feel the sorriest for is
the children.

But once they get a chance to see some
of these little critters up close, I'll

bet they'd get curious enough to come up
and give these old mountains a visit or

two. I'm not so sure I like that.

I don't know if I want a lot of
greenhorns traipsing around the

use for greenbacks, so I brought you

some flour and sugar and all kinds of
things, but mainly a new steel axe to

with them stumps you got around here.

You know, going out there setting traps
is getting to be mighty hard work.

How'd them kids down at the city take

Oh, you should have seen them little
boys and girls fussing over them little

baby animals.

Petting them and talking to them just
like they was tame puppies and kittens.

You know, not putting them into cages
was the best idea I ever had.

Anyway, after a night's rest, I'll be
ready to take on another load of your

little strays.
