Happy Homes Animal Rescue in Old Bridge,

New Jersey.

All our rescues are from
euthanasialists.

We also have a foster named Twinkle, but
he's a different story.

Twinkle's been here about four months.
We noticed that there was a major issue

with him when he began attacking the
other foster cats.

As we learn more and more about him, we
see that there is an aggression pattern

towards other cats.

Twinkle has attacked me several times.

I currently have to keep Twinkle in the
garage to assure that he will not get

into the house.

My goal for Twinkle ideally would be to
have him adopted and to go on to his

forever home.

If Jackson can't help Twinkle, This cat
is going to be permanently living in my

garage. The longer he stays here, that's
another spot for another cat to get out

of a kill shelter.

So tell me a little bit about Happy
Homes Animal Rescue.

We can foster anywhere from 5 to 15 cats
here. What do we got right now?

Right now we have 11.

11 fosters.

Through the years, I've fostered over 1
,000 cats. Oh!

That doesn't happen.

Elaine adopting out 1 ,000 cats over the
past few years, I mean, that's

incredible. And I owe it to her as a
fellow cat rescuer to do everything I

to help out her situation.

All right, so that leads us to where we
are. Give me a little bit of history

about Twinkle.

He was rescued from the euthanasia list
about...

four months ago. He's sweet and he's
social with people, except he's

cat aggressive.

We're not messing around. He sees them,
he goes for blood.

He sees the sight of another cat.

He makes me bleed.

Damn it.

So any aggression towards humans is
redirected aggression, right?

He'll look at you with these dilated
eyes and this fur hanging out of his

and I'm like, what did you do?

What did you do?

Right, yeah.

How old is he again?

He's only a little over a year.

He's a teenager.

He's more rambunctious than he will be
at any other point in his life. Right.

You take that energy, coupled with the
cat aggression, coupled with the

isolation, that's a problem.

Let's start digging in here.

The first place I want to check out
would be the cat room. Okay. You guys

taking me there? Sure. All right, let's
go.

I want to take a look upstairs because
something about the way the cats are

housed here could be causing Twinkle's
cat aggression.

I need to rule out the rescue
environment at Adelaide first before I

anything else.

These are the rescue cats.

Look at everybody in here. So we have 11
cats in here? Mm -hmm.

Okay. They'll start coming out as they
get more comfortable.

So all 11 cats get along just fine? Yes.

That's kind of remarkable. By the time
you come back, the goal is this will be

all new cats.

Okay. A lot of these guys, some of them
are special needs right now.

Okay.

Seeing 11 cats in one room get along
like this isn't just heartwarming. It's

proof that whatever is behind Twinkle's
cat aggression, it has nothing to do

with the guardians or the foster
environment itself. So now it's time to

Twinkle. All right, let's go.

Jackson's about to meet Twinkle, and I'm
just wondering what is Twinkle going to

do? Is he going to bite? Is he going to
attack?

Okay.

So he's just immediately wanted out of
here.

Although it's a nice big space, that
tells me something right off the bat. He

doesn't want to be in here.

So immediately, he's taking himself and
erasing the smell of the other cat's

office. That's what he's doing, right?

So he's taking his cheek glands.

He's taking, you know, anything he can.
He's got a job right now. He is making

sure that, look at that.

that we are not going to smell like
anybody else by the time we leave here.

that's really important to him. In the
meantime, he's getting very activated

while he's doing that. This is a job.
This is not play.

If you start petting and petting and
stuff like that, you are getting him to

point where he is going to get worked up
and he's going to start doing that.

This is all because of the other cats.

That's it.

Okay, Twinkle, my friend. No bite, no
bite, no bite.

He's biting me now. Ow!

Elaine is, she's a little bit too much
of a mom in this situation.

So Twinkle starts acting up, and she
wants to pet him into control.

She's petting him out of control.

They're having a hard time adopting him
out because all they're seeing is this

bad behavior.

They're not in any way thinking this is
ideal. They want it over as much as

anybody else does.

What's that?

Okay, you see how well I knew what he
was going to do, right?

Boom, boom. Oh, we are totally, like, on
the move now. The garage. It's cold.

It's lonely.

There's no interaction with other
humans. And then you meet Twinkle, and

this energetic, trouble -seeking, Dennis
the Menace type of cat, and this is no

place for him.

This is the same thing as what he was
just doing to you. This is not

He is just so filled with that static
energy that he has to get it out of his

system.

He's about a year old, and he just wants
to get in trouble and play.

The second I break out that toy, we know
who this cat is.

Here's what I want to do.

I want to have Twinkle in the room.

I want to see, once another cat comes
into the space, can we redirect him? Can

we get him interested in something else?
Or is he going to go so singular?

that we won't be able to do it. I mean,
normally we'd try to make an assessment

without seeing that, but I don't think
there's any way.

All right, maybe we should do Linus.
Linus, we'll try Linus, see if they can

interact. Okay. So you want to go try to
get Linus? I'll keep this door closed

so that we have an airlock going on. We
currently have five of our own cats.

Linus is the baby. He's extremely laid
back. He loves to play with other cats.

And if Twinkle could be friendly towards
any other cat, it would be Linus.

But when I brought Twinkle here,
instantly he attacked my cat, Linus.

Twinkle comes anywhere near Linus, Linus
will start growling automatically

because he knows.

with other cats.

But when Twinkle comes anywhere near

It's a horrible feeling when a guardian
gets attacked by their cat when I'm in

their presence. Linus attacking Elaine
because of how scared he was of Twinkle.

We just got a pretty loud shot across
the bow from the other residents of the

house. They're scared of him. Elaine,
that's not scared. That's terrified.

I know. I am shocked that Linus attacked
Elaine.

Elaine bottle -fed Linus since he was a
few weeks old.

Just shocking.

Okay, come on in.

All right, so I still need to see
Twinkle with another cat.

I've seen Twinkle work out.

I've seen him redirect that energy. Now,
the only thing that I have not seen is

I haven't seen Twinkle with another cat
in the room.

Now, in terms of another cat, where's
the closest cat to him right now?

There is a cat. Hyann is an outdoor cat.

She comes in and she sleeps in the
garage.

Oh. She's on the other side. Other side
of what?

Now she has experience with him as well.
Yeah. Okay, well here's the plan. I do

want to see him in the visual vicinity
of another cat.

I'd rather there not be carnage. So what
I'd like to do is use what I would call

sight blockers. So when I know the fight
is beginning, I would plunk in between

and that way they just have that moment
and then we can guide them away.

I figured that the most... organic way
to make this exercise happen is to open

the door, separating the two parts of
the garage, and have Twinkle come into

room where Cayenne is.

And if anything goes down, we can stop
it before it gets too bad with sight

blockers. Basically, you can use a
cardboard box, anything where you don't

to bend down and put your hand into the
fray, then you can split them up. Oh,

here he goes. Okay.

So, in he comes.

Now he's just doing the... He may run

What's really important, we get out of
that room. Elaine and Eric are shaken

this energy that he's got in him can go

I wasn't expecting as much energy as he
had to expend on that. And by the way,

he's still expending it. One of the
things that we've seen today is it's not

just about him.

The damage that you took to your face
today is because your other cats are so

terrified that they will attack you in
order to not come face to face with him.

Go back in the living room and figure it
all out. Okay. All right. Great. So far

in the course of just a few hours, I've
seen Elaine's favorite cuddly sweet

house cat just carve up her face because
he was so terrified of Twinkle. If

that's not enough, I saw Twinkle go to
war with the other sweet cat living next

door in the garage.

And I already know from going upstairs
that Eric and Elaine and the other

cats have nothing to do with the
problem. I'm just going to hang out

I'm going to sleep here.

So that leads me to one stark conclusion
about what's got to happen next year,

and I'm really afraid that Elaine's not
going to like it.

I mean, here's my take, and it's plain
and simple.

I think that the effort to get him
socialized to other cats in this house

going to be a frustrating waste of time.

It's not a matter of, you know, let's
get him to work with other cats in this

house. It's a matter of the only way we
can work with him is not in this house.

He needs social interaction.

I really seriously feel that every day
that we spend trying to find a solution

here is a day that's detrimental to him
and for his development and detrimental,

potentially, to every other cat in this
house.

So here's what I want.

By the time I get back here next time,
he's got to be someplace else.

A home with no cats.

Eric and Elaine's foster cat Twinkle has
been terrorizing the other cats in the

house. After witnessing a pretty bad
fight, I've had to make a tough

It's an emergency placement.

He's just not here. And no cats.

A quieter house would be great. I want
Eric and Elaine to utilize their local

Happy Homes Rescue Network to find a
permanent home for Twinkle. I know that

there's a lot riding on this for you
guys and for him and for every other cat

this house and potentially the home that
he's going to.

because he's in the garage and because
of his hatred for all these other cats

trying to figure out why certain cats

their upbringing because they were taken

and sometimes that'll wind up as a cat

It makes sense that Twinkle needs to
find a home right away and not be stuck

a garage where he gets very minimal
playtime. But that is a big undertaking,

I just don't know where I'm going to put
him. I'm going to try as hard as I can.

I'm here for my second visit with Eric
and Elaine and the cat Twinkle. And the

last time I was here, I made a really
strong request, which was Twinkle had to

get out of here and into a home with no
cats.

Hopefully what I'm going to find out
today is that we're going to a new home

integration work and get him settled

-old, a three -year -old, and a five

Twinkle is a high -stimulation cat. And
as far as I know, kids under the age of

However, if this family is willing to
follow my guidelines closely about

integrating a cat into a new home, I
think I can make this work.

This is my last shot with him, I feel
like. If we can make this work.

This could be a great thing. If we're
ready to go, let's pack Twinkle up and

on the road. Let's do it. Twinkle is a
victim of circumstance right now. He is

high -energy, one -year -old cat cooped
up in a garage with absolutely no human

interaction. I've got to get Twinkle out
of this house, and I cannot wait to

figure out who this new foster family
is.

Fears are that he can be so overly
excited and rambunctious that he acts

one of the kids.

They feel he's too much. He's all over
the place. He gets wound up.

It's a guarantee any cat, let alone
Twinkle, any cat is going to get riled

there's three rambunctious kids running
around him.

You know, we need to set him up in the
proper way.

If you don't get it right...

The stakes are fairly high, because not
only does the family lose confidence in

him, we double the chance of him coming
back to your house, and we do not want

that. My goal is not to move a cat out
and be done with it. It's to make sure

the cat's in the right forever home, and
that's really important to me. I agree.

Twinkle's a good cat. Having a home
where he can cuddle up on a couch with

somebody is really what Twinkle needs.

He can be extremely loving at times,
very social and sweet.

is where we're going to set up

Twinkle's base camp. Base camp is really
important because it gives the cat a

sense of ownership, of territory.

A scent soaker literally soaks scent in.
So that's everything from his tower,

which is great, his bed, his dishes, his
litter box is the king of all scent

soakers. Once the cat owns that first
spot, that first piece of real estate,

then we take all the things that define
safety and we move it out to the rest of

the house. Wherever there's a scent
soaker, There's home.

Yeah? Come on in. I just wanted to show
you the concept I got here. This is all

Twinkle's stuff.

And the way that I've laid it out here
is we're making something that I call

Base Camp.

So I took his tower and put it right by
the window. That way, he can spend time

getting the vibe of the whole
neighborhood just by that window. We can

the window. Plus, when the kids come in
to visit him, he has the option of going

up, away from fingers and hands, and...

seeing what they're all about, right?

And the cherry on top is this bed.

This bed is on your bed. Now we're
starting to mingle his scent with yours.

as soon as he gets out of this thing,
he's going to go, okay, them plus me.

Equals something, right?

My hope is he falls into the rhythm of
this family.

It takes cats a good week to fall into
that rhythm. So allow that. Allow Base

Camp to really be his chill place.

The reason why it could take up to a
week for a cat to become confident and

ownership of their territory is because
their scent is so strongly associated

with the sanctity of that territory.
Plus, it does take a while to build up

trust with the new guardians.

Because this is a home with three kids
under the age of five.

It's a bit of an uphill battle.

mouthy, right? So it's really

because, you know, your kids are at a

young age right now.

reach and grab, he's going to get it.

Most important thing is to not set
Twinkle Up for failure.

I want to teach you guys really fast how
to play with cats.

It's important that we start teaching
the kids right now that play is not done

with hands because I give you three
hours and someone's going to get there.

I'm concerned about Twinkle biting my
children. It would be a deal breaker.

However, Jackson teaching us that play
is essential for a cat, I think will

definitely help defer any type of
scratching or biting.

So this thing is your best friend. So
look, there's all this stuff going on.

He's immediately into this. Look at
that.

Immediately. This is all he cares about.
And this is a way to get all of that

electricity out of his system right now.
Now, here's a great little tool for the

parents right now.

If you want him out of the way of the
kids, this is the way to do it. Watch.

Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang. Right? So
I've got him up and out of the way of

the kids right now. So they can be
watching him.

And look at that.

This is one of those cats.

You want to bring the thing out of them.
When they're hunting.

they feel like a complete cat, right?

If you guys can get this kind of
behavior out of him, and I'm talking

almost an hour a day, you won't have to
worry about any of this. You want to

this is the best part, right?

There are the hands.

There's the toy.

He's had so much vented up energy at my
place. He is one of the most energetic.

I think they're going to tire him out.

I would be the happiest guy in the world
if that were the case, man.

These kids are always going to know that
playing with this cat means having your

hand on a toy.

The kids are all fighting over who gets
to play with the cat with the toy.

That's fantastic.

At the same time, having three children
under the age of five and a cat is

barely contained chaos.

But if I can get these kids playing with
Twinkle, he's going to get that energy

drained out. As long as we can control
his energy, things might work out here.

I'm really encouraged by what I'm
seeing, but I also have concerns.

For instance, maybe he shouldn't be
around kids under five.

But in the meantime, I hope it works.
And to maximize the chances of that

happening, I taught you both how to
play.

It is the most important tool that you
guys got because number one, you saw

that toy, it keeps hands far away from
the action. Next thing, I have a concept

called the cat superhighway. The cat
superhighway is this concept where if a

can be in a room and go around the room
without hitting the floor, everybody

wins, right? Kevin, if you could find a
way to attach that tree,

for instance, to these shelves where
it's just a little shelf so we could

up and then he's up.

Get him to stay out of the kid's way so
he can make that choice.

I'll meet them on the floor. It's my

is all I'm saying, is I'm trying to set

you up for success. I'm doing it
because, like... If he makes your kids

a regular basis, then he's coming back
to Elaine's garage, and I don't want

Even if it's temporary, even if it's
something that we can set up and you can

rip down, I'll put it out there that the
only way I know how to make this work

is to keep him up.

I'm concerned because of who he is. I
mean, we're not pulling punches. He's a

cat who gets overstimulated easily, and
he's got sharp nails and sharp teeth,

and he's used them before.

So I just want to make sure that we stay
as safe as possible. I don't want the

kids to freak him out or him to freak
them out. I want it to be a great

relationship, so, like, I just want to
see it work.

When I come back here next time, we're
going to come to a decision. Is Twinkle

going to just be here temporarily?

we need to be working towards a forever

home for Twinkle. I'm totally excited

Little Bunny Suru was born with a rare
condition called terminal transverse

hemimelia. Terminal in this case means a
permanent condition that is not life

-threatening. This cat does not see
herself special needs. She's a cat.

She gets her out.

You've done a great job with her
because, I mean, just behaviorally,

so present. She's so fearless.

We continue to be so impressed by her.
Is there anything going on here that's

not kosher? Well, one thing with Rue is
she doesn't travel very well for a

medical reason or even just coming to
the clinic for a regular checkup. Is it

because she hates the carrier?

Yeah. So how about you take me to where
the carrier is, and let's start working.

Cats generally don't like the carrier,
and that's because they associate it

going to a place they don't like. In
Little Bunny Throughroof's case, that's

vet. Now, it's not uncommon at all, but
it doesn't have to be this huge

challenge to get them to make that
positive association.

So it's all about positive
reinforcement.

And then you start training her. Train
her to go in. And as soon as she gets

click treat, right? And then come right
back out again.

Oh boy, this is going to be easy. Now
she's going to go in, and as soon as she

crosses the threshold, there you go, now
the treat. See how easy this is.

We use click and treat method. So when
little bunny Suru hears the click, she

knows she's done something right and
that a treat is coming. Me too.

And this process keeps her coming back
and creates a positive association with

the carrier.

Now the second she eats that, she's
going to see the laser, come back out,

now again, as soon as she's out.

Exactly. She's going to go back in.

And then there we go.

This is her place. She loves it. There's
no problem. Now we're out again. What's

going to happen very quickly is that
she's going to not have any association

with in, out, in, out. And then you go
up, you go down, click treat. Zip, zip.

And then pick up, pick down. Break it
down into every last motion. And once

do that, you really shouldn't have much
of a problem with it. So Jackie's going

to break it down to micro challenge
lines to make sure that the carrier is a

positive association.

She is an amazing presence.

At what point were you like, we've got
to show her off to people?

Our number one intention was to just
have her. And then it was like, hey,

share her with the world.

Overnight, she gained 20 ,000 followers.

So how many fans do we have on Instagram
right now? She is just about to hit 300

,000. Goes really quickly, yeah.

It's been a really wonderful thing to
share her. So many people all over the

world love her just as much as we do.

There's plenty of people that say, I
want one, or I want Roo, which they

have Roo. You've got 300 ,000 people
that are telling Jackie and Curtis, I

your cat.

And it suddenly occurs to me, these guys
can be a massive instrument for change.

I can hook you up with pictures of one
adoptable special needs cat after

another, and you can make the most
unbelievable difference in the lives of

thousands of special needs cats.

I would love that. I'm looking forward
to using Rue's Instagram page in order

help other special needs cats.

I know that there are a lot of other
animals that would certainly enrich

people's lives and give them the same
joy that we found with Rue. I am so

psyched that I came and spent some time

So the first time I was here, we needed
to see Twinkle with another cat.

That happened to be Kyanne. She's like
totally back to the amazing cat that she

is. It's incredible. I mean, I've had
the experience too. You have one cat in

house full of cats and kaboom,
everything twinkles down.

The twinkle down effect.

Yeah, it added a lot of stress to the
household.

On a scale from 1 to 10, I'd say it's a
10 that Twinkle is not here right now.

Things are great.

I got to tell you, I was actually
pleasantly shocked when we went over to

McGinn's house. We walked in there.

Mayhem. I mean, I was so overstimulated
that I couldn't even be in public for 24

hours after that one.

But he was just like, this is my energy.

This is what I'm all about.

It seemed like a good fit.

Listen, I mean, I don't know about you,
but my worry was...

Kevin was brutally honest, and he said,
I don't build for Kat.

They fit into my life, but if Twinkle
has to compete for floor space with

children under the age of six years old,
that's too much. So if for some reason

the McGins aren't going to work out,
then we'll make something work out, but

he's not coming back here. Thank you.

After seeing how much better life is for
Elaine and her animals at Happy Homes

Animal Rescue, I realized that I can, in
good conscience, allow Twinkle to come

back to this house. So I'm going to
personally take on the responsibility

whatever happens to Twinkle from this

It's make or break time. The last time I
was here, Kevin had reservations about

commitment, which gave me my own
reservation.

I mean, not that I'm shocked or
surprised or anything like that, but I'm

shocked and surprised.

This is the first time I've ever seen
him sitting still before.

When I left you guys, I was worried
about him with the kids. Have you had

problems with him?

No. Nothing. Nothing. He seems just so
well -adjusted to your life. Look at

You'd hear the kids starting to scream.

He does not give a rip.

Well, from what I'm seeing and hearing

Twinkle seems to love his new home, so
that's nice.

Sure, it's nice that this family gave
Tucker his new name, but that's still a

far cry from actually committing to him
for the rest of his life.

Also, there's just something about
Kevin's body language that's just off.

But regardless, it's time to put them
and Tucker's future to the test.

If you guys want Tucker as a forever
home, I want you to have him if you want

sign the papers.

I'd like to talk to you one -on -one
outside for a minute.

Heaven needs to talk to me about
something. It feels like you're in the

of a wedding and the preacher says

your peace. It can't be a good thing
when they speak. I do have a few issues.

B I've got here is me taking Tucker

back. And to where, I have no idea. So
I'm really hoping it doesn't come to

it too when I brought him over here, and

I was really concerned. But when I saw
him interact with your kids, and I know

that he's been okay for two solid weeks
with you guys, I will stake my

reputation on this one.

going to go ahead and adopt Tucker.

magical the way he just got here and he
