then all of a sudden, it was like 30.

If you feed them and you don't fix them,

It is kind of an issue.

You're dealing with a community that is
pretty close to the end of their rope

here. It's go time. We are setting up
the trap.

He tripped all of them.

We're starting to think that maybe
somebody doesn't want us here.

I don't want to leave him here, but I
got no place to put him. His life is

to be a short one. It's a distressing
reality. This breaks my heart.

And... A neighbor was feeding cats, and
I thought, that's so nice of her.

And one day she said to me, I'm moving.

I didn't even give it too much thought,
and I just started feeding cats.

Here, here's some chicken.

The minute you start feeding a cat,
they're yours.

I'm a cat lover myself. We want to help
them, but it keeps growing.

This is a mom cat right here.

She's had about three or four litters
already.

Do I feel like a crazy cat lady?

Probably from the outside looking in,
but I don't feel like a crazy cat lady.

do it because I feel like it's my job.

There's a lot of stigma having a cat
colony.

My neighbors go crazy because there's so
many cats.

I worry about mom because the
responsibility she takes can sometimes

emotional. You know, it's sad. They
don't have a home. This is magic.

I am feeling overwhelmed, but I wouldn't
stop helping cats because they're my

responsibility. I took them on.

Every morning, my mother wakes up early.

I'm going to feed a lot of cats.

And when she comes home from work, she
needs to feed the cats late at night. So

I like to help her. It smells delicious,
doesn't it? If I'm not around, I feel

bad because it has so many trays.

It's heartbreaking for me because they
keep multiplying.

And I can't get a handle on it. This is
the other mom cat.

I'm asking for Jackson's help now
because if he can help me get any of

adopted, it would be wonderful.

Figuring out a solution with Jackson
helping us, that would be awesome.

And we need all the help we can get.

Today I'm dealing with a feral colony in
Southern California.

Feral cats, they're not just stray cats.

They have been born out on the street.
They have no social contact with humans.

They are feral, which is to say that
they're not pets.

They're meant to be out here, not in
your house.

I'm scoping out the neighborhood before
I go in to meet the family so I know

what I'm looking for.

This feral cat... all over the country.
Now, what makes Southern California

special is that there is no winter. It's
always hot.

Cats can go into heat when the weather
conditions are right. And the weather

condition is always right in Los
Angeles, which means they're always

Angeles, there's over 2 million feral

cats roaming around here. The only way
that we can effectively manage feral

communities is a system called Trap,
Neuter, Return, TNR.

We trap these guys.

We neuter them.

We put them back out here.

And so that way, they don't reproduce.

And just like that, this colony will be
contained. It is by far the most humane

approach. And that's what we're here
for.

How long have you lived here?

25. 25 years? Yeah. Okay. And in that 25
years, when was the first time you

realized you had... A feral cat issue.

Well, here's the thing. The neighbor was
taking care of these cats.

And then she told me she was moving. And
I just sort of naturally fell into

feeding the cats.

Yeah. Do you remember how many that you
were dealing with?

Say 10.

Okay. And then all of a sudden, within,
you know, just recently, it was like 30.

Recently? Yeah.

It was just overwhelming.

I can't get a handle on it. I totally
hear you.

If you spend enough time around the cat
rescue community like I do, you see

people like Ellen and her sons, and you
just recognize them immediately.

They're people with huge hearts who just
care about the cats. But in this case,

the size of that colony has just gotten
out of control, and we've got to step in

right now before it gets any bigger.
These guys just need a little bit of

direction, hopefully.

When your neighbor was like, I'm out of
here, I'm moving, had you any history

with trapping?

I rented five traps one time. I got one
cat.

So you put out traps.

and these guys just won't go in.

Right. Okay. Do you have neighbors who
are not so happy about the TNR efforts?

See, I don't know. A lot of the
neighbors feed the cats, but I have had

with the neighbors before. Yes, the cats
poop in everyone's yard.

They want me to take care of the
problem.

Every single thing falls on me. For the
whole neighborhood.

I can see the frustration written all
over Ellen's face. She needs some help.

It's very important for me.

to be a source of education for this
entire neighborhood.

We are presenting a humane solution, and
hopefully the entire neighborhood is

going to jump behind it because we have
no chance of success here unless we have

community buy -in.

The best thing that we can do is get a
lay of the land here, where you guys

feed, where these guys congregate, so I
just have a good picture in my head. So

if you want to just lead me around, that
would be great. Go for it. Go.

There's feeding stations all over here.

I don't like the fact that they're out
in the open.

I don't like the fact that there's so
many of them, because in terms of

everybody, having them right outside
your window is the best place, because

the trap goes off, you'll be right
there. So what I would love to start

especially with the across -the -street
cats, let's start getting them over here

into one basic feeding station.

Tonight, I'm just going to come out here
around feeding time with Ellen, watch

how she does it, because I want to see
what makes up this colony.

I also want to talk to a few neighbors
today to talk about their experience

the ferals. What's your name? Oh,

of experience trapping, so we're really
hoping to at least start to get a handle

on things. It is kind of a nuisance. We
don't want 40 cats roaming our

neighborhood. If we keep getting three
litters of kittens in my backyard every

year.

I don't want 12 cats living in my
backyard. I have small children. We want

population to decrease.

I come across one of Helen's neighbors
who feeds these cats as pests,

You know you're dealing with a community
that is pretty close to the end of

their rope here. The second you get a
colony Tienard, the numbers go down.

I'm just concerned about the people who
like to still feed them because they

enjoy the company of the cat.

Which we know is just going to make the
population grow. Right. People think

that they're being kind by feeding the
feral cats.

But if you feed them and you don't fix
them, you are breeding.

You know that whole thing, it takes a
village? We need complete community buy

-in or we don't stand a snowball's
chance in hell of containing the

Once we're done feeding, I'm just going
to spend the rest of my time walking

around and getting a lay of the land.

Tonight, what I'm hoping to do is I want
to see where she puts food. I want to

know when and where I'm going to stand
the best chance of success when it comes

to traffic. So that's what tonight's
recon's all about.

So I want to get a feel for how many
cats we have out here, but at the same

time, I want to get a feel for how many
kittens we have that are tame enough to

be adopted, because really, feral
kittens only have a very short window of

socialization. After a few months, by
and large, they become too wild to be in

household. And that life that they're
going to have outside is a lot shorter

than the life they would have had
inside. It's a distressing reality.

It's a rare thing to come up across a
six, seven, eight -month -old kitten on

the streets who's feral, who is actually
tame and can go home with somebody and

isn't in a home from somebody. And what
these guys have to realize, this is a

ticking clock.

They are soon going to be adults who are
unadoptable, and they are going to live

a very short life on these streets.

I mean, you've got to figure if you get
them once, you're going to get them

again.

And the last place I want to check out
is straight down this way.

And we already found out that one of
them is this close to tame.

There's a lot of cats out here.

I think I saw a lot of the guys you're
dealing with.

Let's sit down and I will give you your
homework.

So there's part of this homework that's
going to be very easy for you guys and

part that's going to be hard.

The easy part is consolidating the
feeding station.

So I'd like you to get, I'd say, two
feeding stations left.

What we're getting to the point where we
can do is stage our first sort of mega

trap. The second thing I'm going to have
you do, here's the hard part, is start

talking to the neighbors.

Okay, because we all have to be on the
same page at the very least 48 hours

before nobody else feeds. Then we can
trap. Otherwise, we don't have a chance.

The cats have to be fed in one place and
one place only. Okay. So let's just

start there.

Oh, good. I'm glad you're happy at

I'm telling you these things and I know

that it's a lot of weight.

There's a lot of work to be done here.
Ellen has to go around her neighborhood,

let her neighbors know what she's doing.
It's really important to get community

buy -in, and it's on Ellen to get that

Russian hairless cats.

Boris is two years old, and Igor is a
year and a half. And they are insane.

Living with Boris and Igor is like
living with two toddler chimpanzees with

razor -sharp claws.

It is constant chaos.

They knock over all of my Day of the
Dead stuff. Can't think it's the

thing ever.

My bathroom is one of the hot zones. If
I do not keep the door shut, all hell

will break loose.

They make it nearly impossible to do
anything.

Boris, come out of there, please.
Cooking is one of my favorite things to

and it is now one of the most stressful
things that I do.

Now I've got to clean up this disaster.

They've gotten shy now, and they're
hanging out in the closet at the moment.

everything. So what differentiates a

Donskoy from a Sphinx?

Donskoy, the hairless trait, is
dominant.

So they don't have as many health issues
as Sphinx do.

Their one kind of weak spot is they're
prone to gingivitis.

That's the worst? Yeah. Yeah, that's the
bad.

They're highly intelligent. They're both
smarter than what I call a hair cat.

I got Boris from a Ukrainian breeder,
but I could not bear the fact that Boris

would be by himself.

So I decided to get Boris his own
kitten. From the moment Igor arrived,

been constant chaos.

Fill me in. What's going on? My two
Donskoy's are...

They're crazy pants.

Wait, I'll write that down. That goes in

Crazy pants. They have what we call
riots, where they just get the spins and

running around the apartment like
lunatics with razor -sharp claws.

They get in my face when I'm cooking,
Boris especially.

He sits on the stove next to a pressure
cooker by making homemade chicken stock.

Right on the stove. He's also taking a
flying leap at the oven when there's

something in there cooking.

Wow. Debbie's kitchen is a playground
for cats. Debbie is literally and

figuratively playing with fire up there,
man. What about if we were just sitting

here hanging out watching TV?

I mean, Boris has an appetite for
destruction.

What have they broken around here? Have
they caused a lot of... Everything.

Welcome to his scratching post.

Really, really beautiful.

But, I mean, if I was him, I'd be like,
game on.

You know what I mean? That cabinet, game
on. I mean, there's a lot of game on in

this place.

The entire house is this wonderful folk
art playground for little energetic

cats. Come on. If you already have cats
that are Dennis the Menace incarnate,

you put stuff like this out there and
you are asking for it. How many hours a

day are you away from the home?

You know, on a good day, 10.

On a day if I have to take clients out
or I have an event.

then I don't get home until, you know,
11 o 'clock at night. Yike. Debbie

home as late as she does is a problem.

Her being gone for 10 to 12 hours a day
and then expecting these already

energetic cats to just adhere to her
schedule is completely unrealistic.

It's like having two preschoolers at
home. If you've left two preschoolers at

home for 12 hours expecting when you
come home for the place not to be

destroyed, you'd be wrong.

Well, what do you do?

I'm executive producer for a music
company that does music for commercials.

Oh, right on. And I have taken them to
the studio.

Seriously? Mm -hmm. Are they good there?
Yeah. That might be a lifesaver there.

All right, let's get up, take a walk
around here and see the kind of havoc

This is like the back -jumping zone.

Thinks I'm a human ladder. And he does
it primarily in the closet when I'm

trying to pick out my clothes in the
morning. And then I get a cat hanging

my back every day.

They are tree dwellers. They like to be
up high.

And if you present that wonderful
target...

Bang, man.

Donkeys are firmly tree dwellers. I
mean, they perch on the top of a door

so I want Debbie to put up shelves that
will lead to this final shelf where the

donkeys can be as gargoyly as they want
to be, but they're not going to get in

their way at the same time. And that's
something for us to work on. Yes. Okay,

great. I'm seeing some of your toys that
are hanging out here. Go through this

with me. Mm -hmm. And show me.

What has high value? There is one toy
that they really, really, really, really

like. I have no more of them because
they break it in a day or two. Now I'm

getting to know your cats.

If it breaks, it's high value.

These guys destroy what they love.
Right. You look at their toy basket and

just this mess of tangled nonsense.

It's time to get down and dirty about
this kind of thing and show Debbie that

the only way your cats are going to be
satisfied is if they have toys that

actually work for them. Now, moving over

This stuff is just begging for it. Oh,
he utilizes it. He's knocked all this

stuff over. And this guy has made it
almost 20 years, and he just broke it

week. Oh, man.

We have, I mean, this.

Oh, my God.

I just became a dance guy. I'm so sorry.

Debbie's house is 90 % no zone.

I knock stuff off the shelf. Everything
is a no. There's got to be a yes behind

every no, or nothing's going to work in
this house.

So I like to cook a lot.

Okay. The last time that I was making
soup stock, Boris got on the stove. He

turned on the burner with his foot.
Whoa.

That stove, that's a disaster waiting to
happen.

I'm in Marina Del Rey and I'm going
through the house with Debbie. He turned

the burner with his foot. Whoa. That
stove is a total catastrophe.

He's going to blow this place to kingdom
come. Why you're not?

Home, that could happen.

Now, I'm not taking this lightly.

That stove has got to be child -proof,
and it had to happen yesterday.

I've seen plenty. Now comes the hard
part. I need to give you some homework.

We've got to start thinking about the
land of redirection.

What is the payoff for him jumping on
your back in the closet?

Getting to the shelf.

So if we give him another way to get to
that shelf, problem over. For Debbie's

homework, I want Debbie to be thinking
about the concept of redirection.

Because we can say no, but we've got to
leave them someplace else. The next

thing that we're going to work on is a
sense of ritualizing their lives.

Eating is a ritual. In a perfect world,
part of that ritual would also be the

play that comes before the meal.

Debbie works long days. Because of that,
Boris and Igor accumulate energy as the

day goes on. They have to release that
energy. It happens.

So I want her to feed them meals during
the day and also to have a play session

before that meal so they get some energy
out of them. Then they can rest. When

she comes home, it should be, hey, how
you doing? Let's play and have a meal

go to bed.

Let's be as unbelievably safe as we can
be. The first thing that you can do is

the child -proofing of the stove.
Because the idea of those guys doing

that when you come home,

The tragedy awaits you is it's really
not cool.

I am putting her to the test.

Everything's got to change in order for
there to be success in here. We've got a

lot to do here to give you a sane life,
but I think we've got a good start.

house. I was called in here by a woman

her sons who are feeding a lot of cats
and the colony is completely out of

control. And I'm ready to go. This is a
neighborhood problem. We're here to

provide a neighborhood solution.

Are you guys as excited as I am? Yeah.

Thrilled. So our plan was very light
feeding last night with no goodies.

And today we're hungry. Right.

Okay. They're hungry.

Ellen's done exactly what I asked her to
do. The key thing here was to stop

feeding the cats about 24 to 36 hours
ago so they'd be hungry enough to get in

those traps. Because if they're not
hungry, we don't catch cats.

Okay, so the next stop here, we've got a
bunch of your neighbors who have come.

We've got representatives from SNP LA
and Best Friends.

And we're going to go out there and just
talk to everybody about what's going on

here today, okay?

This is a neighborhood thing, and that's
why I thought it was so important to

call in people from the neighborhood so
that we could explain this all to them.

We've got some serious A -rated trappers
here. We've got my friend Destiny,

who's the cat initiative supervisor at
Best Friends of L .A. She's got some of

her employees here with her. And these
guys have been on, I don't even know how

many of these trapping expeditions.
They're experts, if there ever have been

experts. Plus, I've got my friends here
from the Spay and Neuter Project of L

.A. These guys do thousands and
thousands of cat and dog spays and

every year, and they are all going to
explain this to Ellen and her neighbors.

I'm going to let everybody start getting
work done around here. I know we've got

information we can hand out, but at the
end of the day, this is a neighborhood

issue. And in that respect, I just want
to thank you guys so much for showing

the support that you are. Yes, and I
thank you for supporting me. Right on.

down, and then we're going to go catch

some cats.

So one of the things that we want to do
with these traps is we'll go ahead and

bait the back of the trap.

This is where we want them to come.

The plexi door, which is really great
because the cats think they can get all

the way through.

And then what we usually do is we start
it off covered just because then it

doesn't look quite as scary as a big
metal cage.

So what will happen is the cat will walk
through and then they hit the trigger

and it closes.

I can't tell you how awesome it is that
Tomahawk donated all of these traps to

our PNR cause in Los Angeles.

So we're aiming for it like in a perfect

I mean, we are doing everything we know

We're putting down traps all over the

We're disappointed, for sure. A lot of

it's cats who don't get spayed or

of them. So a little bit of an issue.

That was a human.

So we're starting to think that maybe
somebody doesn't want us here.

That is saying, I don't want you doing
this at my house. A lot of the locations

that we go to, it's interesting because
especially if a large family lives

there, it could be a family member who
is nervous about us coming because he

doesn't believe that the cats will be
returned.

It's very common to have people divided,
not just in the community, but in a

household. Very complicated.

I'm staying as long as it takes, yeah.

I just want everyone else to sort of
settle in.

What's happening is disappointing for
sure, but it's not going to stop our

progress. We're going to continue moving
forward.

We've set our traps in other places, and
hopefully it's game on right now.

them catch whatever I'm playing with.
And then I feed them, and then they give

themselves a bath, and they get in their
bed.

ceiling cat tree complete with cats on

They'll lead up to the top of the closet
so they don't have to jump on me. Good

boys. You guys are so smart.

Brilliant. Brilliant. We got the crow's
nest in the closet, another one in the

bathroom. At this point, we got Don's
toys with places to go, things to play

with that have nothing to do with Debbie
or her shoulders. She can get ready in

the morning without having her clothes
shredded at the same time.

I would never have thought to use the
ladder that way. Never in 10 million

years. But now, I think it's brilliant.

Yeah. Igor likes water, but he's afraid
to get wet, and I didn't start bathing

them when they were kittens like I
should.

So that's why they get a little ring
around the collar, you know? Yes. And I

chase them down with, like, baby wipes
and stuff. Now, I think Don's boys are

the same as things they need baths,
something like once a week, right?

So they say. So they say.

Whether you're Sphinx, Donskoy, or any
hairless cat, you create a lot more oil

from your skin. And if your hairless cat
absolutely won't take that bath, you

can try a fragrance -free baby wipe
because these guys can get skin

just like that. You did a great job, and
you did really good by your cats. I

passed the Jackson test. You did, man,
with fine colors. I don't even have to

come back a third time. Debbie's a
perfect example of what happens when you

listen and follow along with
suggestions. Yeah, I get it. Debbie has

now. She knows how to utilize them. She
knows how to look for trouble. If there

is any trouble, she knows how to fix it,
but she's not going to need that

because the boys are fulfilled right
now.

Mission accomplished.

Taking on all of Jackson's homework has
really impacted the quality of all three

of our lives pretty drastically. It's
not perfect yet, but these cats haven't

seen anything yet. I've still got a lot
of my fruit.

In my years of working with cats, I've
seen them contribute to our well -being

in multiple, unexpected, inspirational
ways. And now you can too.

Animals can sense danger well before
humans can. Now Herbie is no different.

here on Staten Island to visit with
Herbie and his family after he saved a

from dying. I just got to thank him.

Hey!

Hi, Jackson. Thank you for coming.

My name is Janine. I'm a single mom to
two kids. I'm going into a master's

program, and I do a lot of cat
fostering. So, Janine, tell me about

Herbie was a cat from the Pets on Death
Roller.

I work with Staten Island Hope Rescue,
and they had asked me if I would foster

him, and I said, sure.

And he just fit in right away. The one
thing I can tell you is that this cat is

so friendly.

It absolutely comes to you, rubs up
against you. You've got to think.

that he was put in your path for a very
good reason. Yeah, so it was July of

2014. I was up all night. I was a new
mom. I had two kids. I was in school.

I was so tired I just wanted to go to
sleep. But then...

Herbie was jumping on my bed and jumping
off and running to the door. And I was

so tired. I was like, all right, he's
just being a cat. But something said

is not his personality. There's
something wrong.

So I followed him, and he led me to my
daughter's room.

And when I opened up the door, he jumped
into her crib. And she had had her

little blank.

And she must have rolled over, and it
went onto her face. And she was making

these, like, smothering noises, like she
couldn't breathe.

He jumped into her crib and he was
pouring at the blanket.

He saved my daughter.

That's incredible.

Every cat that's come into my life,
there has been one moment where you go,

this is why you're here.

And I knew at that point, I was like,
enough, he's my family.

You just earned it.

Meeting Herbie today is fantastic in so
many ways. He saved a little girl's

life. Hi, Isabella.

Hi, Herbie.

And they saved his life. This cat was
about to be killed in a shelter. He

wouldn't have had the chance to save
these lives. This is this life -saving

cycle right in front of me.

Herbie looks like one big ball of
perfect cat, but is there anything that

might need?

When I started fostering him and he came
to the house, he started to pee and

poop in the tub.

At first I thought it was just, oh, he
didn't like the cats, it's a new home,

but it's two years.

Does he use the litter box at all? He
does. He just prefers to use the tub as

toilet. When I see cats that go into the
bathtub, a lot of times it's sensitive

paws. And when they go to step in a
litter box, it's those little pellets

really, really hurt them. The really
kind of sand -like litters, that I would

definitely try.

Herbie is very sensitive and in tune
with my family, but he also may be very

sensitive physically.

So I'm going to use the litter that's
better for Herbie's sensitive cause.

glad you were able to meet him. Having

Jackson in my home, it's just very
validating that Jackson knows that

feral colony for my last visit with her.

Now, we have had tremendous success
here.

Seven cats the first night, but we had
some serious unfinished business. I

that one of the cats that was trapped
was a tame kitten that I was able to

up the last time I was here.

Cats tame enough that apparently they've
named him Blondie and one of Ellen's

neighbors wants to adopt him, maybe.

Now, I have no idea how this is going to
turn out in terms of making these cats

into domestic indoor companions.

But I do want to check in with Ellen's
neighbor to see how it's going.

Okay. I can't tell you how excited I am
to see this little boy.

The first night I was here, I met
Blondie in the street. And at the time,

the most mortifying thought to me that I
don't know what to do with him. I

wasn't expecting a tame cat while I'm
out here scouting for ferals. If the cat

is tame, he should be in a home.

Hello, my little boy.

I couldn't stop thinking about him. Hi.

Is he at this point your cat?

Absolutely, 100%. Fantastic. I'm really
glad that you made the commitment to

actually adopt him because there's that
line where you say, are you feral or are

you mine? And you said you're mine.

And how could you say no? I couldn't be
more happy. Seeing Blondie again

in the context of being in someone's
life as their cat.

is an amazing feeling.

I mean, to know that he's going to be
safe means more to me than anybody could

ever know. I can sleep at night. I know
he's got a home. You're his adopted dad.

Yay. Okay. Thank you so much for that,
man. Thank you for taking this boy off

the street. Yeah. All right. You take
care, man. Yeah, take care. Bye.

All right, I'm on my way back to Ellen's
house, and since the last time I

checked in, we're still trapping cats in
this neighborhood because the job's not

done yet. But there's still feral cats
out here.

If we're not trapped and neutered, that
means that they're just making more cats

than all of us just for nothing. Look,
there is no 75 % effort here. We're not

stopping until we're done. So now what's
our grand total right now? How many

cats do we have?

Hello. Hello, ma 'am.

Since last I checked in, we're still
trapping in this neighborhood because

job's not done. We're not done until
we're sure we got everybody.

So now what's our grand total right now?
How many cats have you caught?

What?

Fifteen. Fifteen.

That's amazing.

That is so cool.

Since Jackson was here last time, we've
had eight more cats.

It's been a ride.

It's been great. It's really been great.

When I met you, you had... These cats,
you had the fact that you were tired.

had been trying to do this by yourself
all these years. Do you feel like that's

better now?

Yes, I do.

Thanks to you. I got to say, you look
relieved.

I am. I felt like, you know, I was alone
on the ship, but you helped me a lot. I

mean, as far as I'm concerned, in terms
of helping this community's cats shrink,

I think we did it. We did it. We did it.
And it just takes people who care about

animals like you do.

The first time I came here, Ellen was
literally up to her neck in feral cats,

and now she doesn't have to live in
constant stress.

But these cats don't have to either.

We had about 30 cats out there. We
trapped and neutered over half of them.

call that a huge win.

We have a long way to go to make sure
that every feral cat has an acceptable

life and that they stop reproducing. But
it's days like this where I can look

around and say, yeah, man, we did our
part. And doing your part, it's all it

takes.
