ferals. And I now have 20 -plus cats
that roam my property, with new ones

showing up every day. All of this has
now affected my personal kitty, Chloe.

The problem is, until I'm able to trap

They've adopted special needs animals of

all shapes and sizes. And then there's
Lily, who bullies every single one of

them. And she doesn't stop there. She's
violent towards the humans, too.

Bruce thinks that if Lily's not happy in
the home, she should find another one.

Miriam just wants everyone to get along.

And so do I. So I'm going to get over

We have Louie, the three -legged cat. We
have Daisy, our blind and deaf dog. We

have Olivia. She's Daisy's senile dog.

And we have a crazy cat, Lily.

She's crazy. She fights. She hisses.

youngest.

She's what, seven now? And we've had her
since she was six weeks old. Oh wow.

She came from Skid Row and she was
living with a homeless woman at the

of the problems they're having with her.

When one cat blocks another cat from
getting to food, getting down from

somewhere, it's a territorially
aggressive move. And it's often the cat

perceived as the weakest in the house
that's going to get bullied.

Those are the only attacks on animals in

With Daisy, Lily attacked Daisy for no
reason.

Why did she attack him then?

Yeah. We don't know.

Wow. For me, being psychic, I could tell
the energy. Something was drastically

have a clear path to her. You have a

turn that area of fear where Lily pees
into a play zone. If she views that area

as her own private hunting ground, it
could get her to stop being so fearful.

And it's that fear that could be the
reason that she's urinating there.

Instead of cutting the carpet, use a CO2
cleaner for the odor. The rug's

replaceable, but at what point is she
going to start peeing in a corner?

Yeah. And, you know, now your hardwood
floors reek of cat urine. You can't get

rid of that. 20 grand. You've got to put
in new hardwood. And at the end of the

day, we want to do what's right for her.
Right. And maybe this isn't. Things are

going well, but the peeing, I don't know
who will go first, Bruce or Lily at

this point, because his head explodes
every time she does it.

We just want her to be happy. If she's
not happy, then we have to look at

something else.

here, Lily had stopped bullying Louie,

who's deaf and blind.

But she was still peeing repeatedly on
the living room rug, which to Bruce is

very unacceptable.

I got a chance to look at their video
homework, and I was able to see that

Miriam has had success with feeding Lily
out in the open. Lily always has a lot

of fear, and that translates into
aggression. So I thought if she's able

fairly normal for other cats, which is
to eat. Otherwise, I would tend to agree

thinking about what's best for her.

to see Lily walking confidently around

of that room with a lot of confidence

what we're dealing with here is an out
-of -control feral colony that's taken

over the family's backyard.

It's affecting Kimberly and her parents.
I mean, it's a burden.

They're trying to do the right thing.
They're losing the battle. I'm going to

over there right now, and hopefully we
can win the war.

I'm Kimberly, and my neighborhood is
inundated with feral cats.

In 2009, I was in a really bad car
accident and couldn't take care of

parents asked me to move back in. I'm
Mike. I'm Bobby.

All I know is my daughter being a cat,
and all of a sudden there's a bunch more

cats, and this has become a serious
problem.

We have a feral cat colony of 20 cats
that are currently living on our

I'm afraid it's going to cause a rift in
my parents' relationship with me. This

is their property, and these cats right
now at night are in the garage, so they

cannot use their garage.

I also have a kitty named Chloe.

There have been quite a few behavioral
changes with Chloe since the feral

has stepped up to the numbers that it
is. She will start running and screaming

around the house doing donuts. She is a
nightmare.

The ferals have come to depend on me,
and I care about them. All the ferals

been fixed, except Mama Cat, who is
responsible for all the kittens on the

property. She's very intermittent, and
until I'm able to trap Mama Cat, my

colony will continue to grow.

Mama Cat is the mother of all the cats
that we have here. I saw some little

kittens in the bush right on my
driveway, and I was just screaming, oh

more. There's one kitten.

There's the other little kitten.

I have kitties pooping in neighbors'
flower boxes. I have them peeing on my

neighbors' doors, and it smells like cat
pee. If nothing changes with the feral

colony, we're in dire straits. We need
life.

coming in here that the feral problem is

not just in Kim's backyard. It's in the
whole neighborhood.

But I've got to help Kim first, and then
once we get her situation under

control, we can go from there.

So what's the history of the colony
here? The history is, ever since I was

little, there was always a house two
blocks down that had cats everywhere.

As far as I know, the gentleman that
lived there never fixed the cats. Years

later, the gentleman moved, and I was on
the couch one day and looked out the

back door, and I see ten cats I've never
seen before.

Man, a feral cat is a domestic cat that
was born in the wild and has had little

or no human contact at all.

In a neighborhood known for feral cats,
it's not unusual at all to suddenly have

the population surge and congregate in
areas where there's shelter and

food. How many cats do you think that
you're dealing with in your backyard

alone? Roughly 20.

20. Now, over the years, I know that
you've been active in TNR, but you still

haven't caught Mama Cat. Correct.

TNR stands for Trap, Neuter, and Return.

The idea is to spay and neuter these
cats so they can no longer reproduce,

then you bring them back to their colony
so that the colony will eventually die

out, naturally.

Typically, animal shelters try not to
even take in feral cats due to the fact

that they don't have any socialization
with humans, and statistics show that 99

% of ferals never get adopted.

So the best way to stabilize feral cat
populations is through TNR.

The cat population here never goes down.
It always goes up. Right. It's a burden

financially. If we were to move, what do
we do with all the cats?

There's a burden there. Did that happen
in discussion with you guys? Yes, it

has. About moving?

Well, the problem for me is the fact
that Kimberly has to feed all these

We can't go anywhere.

You've got to get them adopted out
because nobody should have 20 cats.

And it could have been a way bigger
problem.

But I also think that my parents don't
understand.

You can absolutely feel the tension
rising in this house. You got Kim on one

side who's trying her best to stop the
situation. We have her parents on the

other side who don't think she's fully
understanding what she's doing. I really

feel like a bomb is about to go off. I'm
the only one in the neighborhood that

stepped up to do anything.

So if I didn't, we might have 200 cats
right now.

Kim has fixed all the cats in the
colony, except for one called Mama Cat.

if we can trap Mama Cat, that will
definitely help contain her feral

I trapped her one time.

Somebody told me, you have to let her go
or the kittens are going to starve and

die. I did not know that they can still
nurse full term after being fixed. And

now, of course, because she was trapped
once.

She ain't coming back. Now she traps
Abby. Now let's start talking about the

She's gotten very highly agitated. She
pins her ears, tucks her tail, and just

runs. I can't just pick her up and
snuggle with her like I used to. When a

Kim keeps these ferals in the garage at
night to keep them safe from the

this colony for a couple years, so it

makes sense that Uncle Gray and Big Red
are more social than these feral

kittens. If ferals have constant human
contact over a long period of time, it

possible to socialize them some of the
time. So in the meantime, there's one

missing piece of the puzzle left, and
that is, where is Mama Cat?

We haven't seen her yet. She will show
up first thing in the morning. That is

going to have to be a priority, isn't

I want to know who's adoptable and who's
feral. The way we do that is I want

someone else to come up to the cats, be
able to touch them, that whole thing.

Since some of these ferals are
socialized, there's no reason not to try

them into homes. This is going to help
diminish the colony and calm tension on

the home front.

The next thing to do is map out mama's
movements.

which brings me to your last assignment.

My goal is, obviously, this is the most
obvious statement of the day, we're

going to trap Mama. This is the most
important thing, important enough that

Now, by trapping Mama Cat, of course,
she's not going to be able to reproduce

I took a look at her video homework and
saw that she was able to get two cats

socialized with her friend.

Great stuff.

Now, that means these two cats could be
adoptable.

I also saw Kim mapping out all of Mama
Cat's movements so we can have better

luck trapping her. That leads me to the
last homework assignment, and that was

my homework, too, and that's to trap
Mama Cat.

What we're going to do today is we're
going to catch Mama.

I've got friends from Stray Cat Alliance
that are going to meet us outside. Come

Right now, we're baiting our traps. Now,
these traps are the most humane way to

capture these feral cats.

The cats are not hurt in the process,
and it allows our trappers to get them

safely to the vet. Now, we've got these

to have Mama Cat spayed. Mama Cat was

the last cat in Kim's colony that needed
to be fixed. And now that Mama's

caught, it means the colony's going to
stop growing, Chloe will be calmer, and

life for Kim and her parents are going
to get better.

Oh, what do we have here?

Look at her climb.

Just like on my first date, Chloe was
literally climbing the walls.

Once Mama's fixed, there won't be any
more kittens, or even better, no

neighborhood toms coming around. Now
that we've gotten Mama taken care of, I

want to give you guys some homework.

So, number one, I want you to commit a
little more to the education by just

walking around with some of these Fixed
Nation flyers to your neighbor's homes

and just hang them on the doors.

Now that the feral colony here is
contained, it's time to help the rest of

neighborhood, because as much as I like
the warm welcome I got on my first

visit, I do not want an angry mob
waiting for me on my final visit.

Just get rid of them.

The next part of the homework, Kim, I
want you to lead the effort to PNR your

entire neighborhood because it is part
of your mission as well as mine, as well

as everybody in Stray Cat Alliance.

We can take care of Mama Cat.

There's hundreds of others in this
neighborhood.

is to continue to socialize them as
you've been doing, but step it up a

bit and get them ready to be adopted

video homework, I saw that Kim was able
to TNR even a few more cats in her

neighborhood, and that's brilliant work.

And I'm just hoping now that the feral
cat colony is in order, life inside the

house is going to get better because her
parents were at their breaking point.

yard. So her being released, I think, is
a great thing. I do realize how

Before you came, I thought trapping was
coyotes and raccoons. Right, exactly. So

it's taken a whole different
perspective.

Great. I feel like I had a bonding
experience with cats because I'm getting

to come up to me a little more.

I'm getting them to be a little more
social.

What I think I learned, it is hard work
with young cats who have never had a

home. So, adopting out red and gray,
how's that been going?

I can't exactly say goodbye to the cats.

Wow. These are our cats. You're blowing

always us two against one, and now it's

Since my last visit, in terms of Chloe's
behavior, how has it changed?

She's much calmer cat now.

There's no more running. I love hearing

helped drain that anxious energy as she
adjusts to the feral population.
