have a well-established reputation

of being regular season darlings.

They've been one of the best teams
in the league, but they always fall short.

It's hard to fathom.

The consistency that has led them
to the playoffs has always been good.

They really need that push
that's gonna send them

to the next level in the playoffs.

I was lucky enough, growing up,

he'd let me play with him
and his buddies a little bit.

I was trying to work hard
to be as good as them,

so I could play with them.

Whether we were playing basketball,
football, baseball, hockey, anything.

I just wanted to be around them,
and it made me a lot tougher for sure.

we really look identical now,

which sucks because
I called him ugly forever.

He means probably more to me
than he'll ever know.

Well, my writing still looks the same,
which is good.

"Make the NHL,"
which is circled about 40 times.

Growing up, he was such a good athlete
that it was almost, whatever he did,

he was very naturally gifted at.

He could pick it up right away.

[crowd cheering]

[Jarvis] You hit high school,
and that's a whole different dynamic of,

"Why weren't you at this party?" or,
"Why weren't you at this person's house?"

I was like,
"Oh, I got hockey in the morning."

It's just like little stuff you have to do
to get to a certain level.

I had no want to go out
and go do stuff like that.

I wanted to shoot pucks.

I moved away at 15
to go play junior hockey.

At that point, I was playing well.

[announcer 1] Seth Jarvis, left-hander!

On the left wing, he scores!

[Jarvis] Got an email saying
I've been selected

for the World Junior summer camp.

[upbeat electronic music playing]

Going into it, I was pretty confident.

You're kind of at the top of the world
at that point.

[Subban] World Juniors is super important.
It's important for the players.

It's the first time for most of those guys
that they put their country's jersey on.

And it's a dream, right?

And in Canada, it's the biggest thing.

Obviously, he was so excited
to just get that opportunity,

but we didn't really know
how everything was going.

[whistle blows]

[player] Yo!

All growing up, I've been a good player.

And then when you go into the Team Canada
locker room, you're not the best player.

And it's a big switch-up.
I had no friends.

I didn't know anybody.
I had no one to talk to.

I was struggling on the ice.

I would just kind of internalize it

and just kind of try
to deal with it on my own.

That was my first run-in
with kind of mental health.

I was definitely in my own head.

And then it was like 6:00 a.m.,

and you get a knock on your door.

And it's never usually a good knock.

So I opened it up,
and they broke the news to me.

[somber music playing]

They told me, "You're getting cut."

Um, I was devastated.

I remember, like,
I didn't know what to think.

I... I called my mom.

I was embarrassed to tell them
what was going on

because this is something you dream of.

My family together have dreamed of this.

And so I was embarrassed
to tell them what happened.

[pensive music playing]

To be so close, but not make it
makes him question a little bit, you know,

"Am I good enough? Should I have
been there in the first place?"

[Jarvis] Mental health is something
I struggle with a lot,

so I still get in my own head.
It is tough.

[birds tweeting]

[sticks smacking ice]

Sat in the hot tub yesterday. Oh, jeez.

I got tub legs.

So when he constantly
makes fun of himself,

you wonder how much does this guy
really kind of battle with himself?

And that self-doubt does creep in

and does hold weight in your heart
and in your brain.

People look at him as a guy who's ready
to pop on that big stage.

But to fulfill his potential,
he has to overcome his own self-doubt.

when I'm swearing at myself,

calling myself some not-so-nice stuff.

So the positivity is something
I've been working on

and making sure I believe in myself.

You go to your first job, and you expect
you're gonna be there for 20 years.

[Jarvis] It's a massive trade and kind of
flipped his whole life a little bit.

You want everyone to feel as comfortable
as possible in that locker room,

and I know if I was in his shoes,

it would mean a lot for someone
to reach out to me

and just say,
"Hey, we're happy to have you."

Like, "If you need anything, I'm here."

And so that's just kind of what I tried
to do and try to be nice.

[Blackburn] When they go out and trade
for Mikko Rantanen,

that is absolutely seen
as the final piece.

it should be a wake-up call to say,

So I think that kind of kicks your ass
a little bit into gear.

more responsibility.

But at the same time,
Seth has an amazing opportunity

to represent Canada
at the 4 Nations Face-Off.

Recently named to the 4 Nations
tournament roster for Team Canada.

That's a huge honor.

Canadian players in the NHL.

[Jarvis] I got the call in my apartment.

My heart started racing.
I didn't know what was going on.

I called my mom right away,
and she started crying.

I was at a loss for words.

Obviously, there's so many
great players to pick from.

I thought maybe that kind of
spoiled my chances.

Immediately get up. Push it up, right?

Five of them.

I'm a little off on this one.

[Blackburn] His election to the roster
wasn't a slam dunk.

This is an opportunity for him to show
that he belongs

and that he earned
and deserved that roster spot.

There's a lot of guys in this locker room

When you're sitting next to Crosby,
it's something special.

I was terrified.

I didn't want to ruffle any feathers,

about how superstitious he is,

so I was like, as long as you don't
mess up what he is doing, it's a win.

And so there's that little bit
of impostor syndrome,

and "Should I really be here?"

There's a lot going through my head.

I have to kind of self-prep talk
a little bit

and try to keep my own
negative thoughts out of my head.

It's tough.

I had no clue I was up.

being one of the younger guys,

and to go into a room
with names like Crosby,

um, he was a little bit intimidated,

and he had kind of that feeling of,
"Do I belong, or should I be here?"

Do we keep it the fuck out of my hands?

I'm just trying to stay out of Sid's way.

I was a little worried about you.

I was gonna stop
and make sure you're okay.

And someone that I'm super happy
I got to experience being around.

How old do you think that thing is?

how are you sort of absorbing all this,

and what do you think it will do
for your career going forward?

I mean, I'd be stupid not to try to take
as much as I can from this opportunity.

I'm surrounded by all
these absolute superstars, legends.

And so just being able
to pick their brains,

just see how they operate
on a day-to-day basis,

how they take care of their body,
how they approach practice.

Just being able to take those little bits
and add them into my game

is gonna only help me.

I've ever been a part of.

maybe as much as it did in the past.

We've been a good team.
We know we have a good team.

And just we haven't gotten over the hump.

Everyone dreams of winning
the Stanley Cup as a kid,

but when you get to this point,
you've gotten close a few times,

it drives you a little crazy.

Washington's a very good team this year.

They got obviously elite players.
