I mean, we're getting so close to

that we all want to be in the final,

We're all starting to
think about it.

I want to be an interior designer.

I want to change my career.

But it's heating up,
the competition.

So we've really got to start
making our mark now.

After winning last week's challenge,

it's put even more pressure on.

But I want to see this
to the end now.

I've got as good a chance as any of
the rest of them

of maybe winning this.

They've arrived at Michelle's London
studio to hear their next brief.

So, after all the stress and
shenanigans of shops,

I thought we all deserved
a little break.

So I'm taking you to the seaside.

We're going to have a little fun
with beach huts.

I mean, what could be more British?

Winston Churchill having a Greggs
at a car-boot sale?

THEY LAUGH

These quintessentially British
seafront beach huts in Essex

boast panoramic views.

Each designer will take on an
existing hut

and use their skills to transform it
based on an individual design brief.

Of course, it's not really going to
be a holiday

because, for the first time,

you're going to be working
on your own.

Five beach huts, one per person.

That means no hiding behind
anyone else.

I really want to see what you can
offer me as individual designers.

And the two designers of the
best-looking beach huts

will be through to next week.

The rest of you will be with
Michelle on the sofa,

and one of you will be going home.

their unique creative specs,

and get together to discuss
the challenges ahead.

So, what have you got?
My brief is "home from home".

I've got "ice cream sundaes".
That's quite fun.

I've got "New England Hamptons...

"..but not Hamptons".

So, like, not classically blue and
white, nautical stripe.

So, what are you thinking of?

How are you going to do Hamptons,
not Hamptons?

Just stay away from blue.

Living in Devon, I think you do
frequent the beach a lot,

but not a lot of people have
beach huts,

so I'll have a think.

Yeah.

Designing a beach hut sounds simple.

What's the catch?

I bet there's a catch.

We're not talking huge spaces here.
No, no.

The smaller you go, the cleverer
you've got to be.

It's going to be tricky, isn't it?
It is.

But this is going to be our first
chance to see each designer

completely on their own.

I mean, that's the bit that's going
to sort of throw

the curveball this time.

They've each got a fantastic
opportunity

to just go for it.

Yeah. They can have fun here.

I think, for me, it will be about
opening those doors

and just being...

You need that wow moment, don't you?
Yeah.

I don't want to open it and go,
"Oh, OK. That's quite nice."

I suppose you're right, yeah.
But it has got to be practical.

I mean, if those doors are opening
and closing every day,

you can't have tricksy bits
of design.

What do you mean by tricksy?

Fiddly, overly complicated bits

that I've got to work out
how they work.

It's got to be simple.
Oh, OK. Right.

Is that clear?
That...that's clear.

And I don't like your tone.

The only thing I think I'm going to
struggle with

is that, like, fun, quirky element.

My interiors are quite serious.

I don't think we're going to get
much time to take in the view

and have a paddle. It's going to be
quite stressful, isn't it?

Probably my most stressful visit
to the beach ever.

So, Siobhan, tell me about your
brief.

So, I got "Tropicana".
Oh, nice.

So I'm kind of thinking, like,
add some pink this week.

Yeah. Because I've been holding back
with the pink.

They held you back! You know, you've
been working with other people.

This is the first time you can
go crazy.

Yep.I'm just worried you're going
to go too crazy with the colours

and people can see it from
Google Earth.

It's a definite possibility!

My mind's just kind of going a
little bit wild right now.

I'm just trying to, like, be as
creative as I possibly can

for this one.

And also, I found it...

I didn't think I would, but I found
it quite hard

not being lead designer last week.

So I'm actually looking forward to
doing the designing this week.

Being the ice cream boss.

Something like that.

I was on the sofa last week

and it's really resonated with me
that I need to work on

not just being, like,
as architectural and structural,

and to push myself with the fabrics
and materials more.

So I suppose I've got a point to
prove this week.

So, Paul, are you happy
with your brief?

Yeah, in the past I maybe haven't
had the briefs

that I would have particularly
wanted,

but this theme I absolutely love.

And what is it?
It's " '50s American retro".

And it's got to be practical,
that's what Michelle was saying.

Because it feels like an easy brief,

but I think it's a little bit
sneaky, innit?

I think it is a bit sneaky because
it has to be able to fit

anywhere from two to maybe
ten people.Yeah.

So not a lot of space for dancing,
Alan.

I think every task now so far,

there's been a bit of me with
a bit of dread

and I have in the past held back.

But I just want to keep winning,
and this new design,

I'm just going to really push
and go for it.

Overlooking the sandy beaches of
this small family resort town

in Essex sit five classic
beach huts.

PAUL: That must be for you, Siobhan,
it's pink!

Oh, my gosh!

3 by 2.5 metres wide,

waiting to get a design makeover.

Oh, wow, this is really snug.

Such a tiny little space!

MICAELA WHIMPERS

I've got to keep this weird
stained glass.

I'm not allowed to take it out.

So it does give me a minor headache.

They can choose to use the existing
furniture or go bespoke.

I do like this piece of
old furniture,

and I think I could make that look
quite retro.

As in the other weeks' tasks...

Hi, guys. How are you doing?
Yeah, we're good.

..builders, carpenters and painters
will help

bring their vision to life.

Oh, it looks better already.

They've only two days, a budget
of £1,000

and cramped working conditions
to navigate

before they must complete
their designs.

First things first today -

I want to get the
internal wall down,

if that is indeed possible?

OK.

MICAELA LAUGHS

How's that going on?
Fine, yeah.

Yeah? So maybe, like, two coats
for that

because it's just untreated wood.

Paul is keen to get started with
his ambitious plans.

Thank you.

The brief is 1950s American retro.

And in that era there was, like,
so many films and musicals

like Grease that was all based
around a '50s diner.

And I think that's been my
major inspiration.

So we'll have a really nice
chequerboard,

black and white tile effect
vinyl going down.

But one of the main features is
going to be

the 1950s diner seating,

which is kind of like a
banquette seating.

I'm a bit nervous about it
because it is a biggish job,

but I really want to show that
I'm not afraid

of woodwork and carpentry, and I'm
not just all about wallpaper.

And that, yeah, I can do that.

Along the promenade...

I like that colour still.
That's good.

..Micaela is preparing a subtle
blended paint effect

for her walls.

Can you just splodge a bit on the
bottom of the wall?

Just so I can see if it dries
much darker.

I'm going for, like, an ombre,
so dark pink at the bottom

and then fading up into white
at the top.

So four slats per colour
is about here.

Yeah.

And then the next will be here.

Yeah, I like that.

For her home from home brief,

Micaela will be opening up
her beach hut

by tearing down the interior wall,

painting her kitchenette on the
back wall a teal colour,

and treating the other walls and
the exterior to an ombre finish.

She's filling the space with vintage
pieces and soft furnishings

covered in teal waterproof fabric.

I've just tried to go for
quite a warm and inviting

kind of, like, cosy feel.

Colours that aren't too
bright and vivid.

And obviously, at home, you do have
some upholstery,

so I've been able to work some of
that in as well.

But of course, there's a niggle
in the back of my mind.

Will Michelle see that as
a positive?

Last week, I didn't have any
upholstery in the shop.

And I'm not going to lie,
I did miss it.

SEAGULLS CALL

Oh, my gosh, that colour's looking
gorgeous!

When people walk in, I want a wow.

I want a real, like, wow factor.

Siobhan is putting our own spin
on her Tropicana brief.

So, this is my tiki beach hut.

And what we're doing in here is,

we're going to clad all this
kitchen in bamboo.

There's going to be grass skirts
hanging over there,

in that back area.

And I love bars.

I've got a bar in my own house.

So we're actually having a
proper bar,

like a bamboo bar, here, that's
going to be on casters.

So you can kind of move it around
as well

so it's multifunctional.

I'm kind of just thinking, like,
for this beach hut,

it'll be proper, like, for
social media as well.

Like, if there's groups of girls
coming out

that like to hang out for the day
by the sea and have a few drinks.

And, yeah, I think it's just going
to be really cool.

For her ice cream sundae brief,

Lynsey is developing an intricate
colour scheme.

I found this really nice textured
tile

and I thought this was really, like,
a swirly ice cream.

And then I'm speckling these pink
and green

and mirrored tiles in here,

a bit like sprinkles on top
of the ice cream.

Nice and cheesy.

Lynsey's beach hut will be given
subtle hints of pastel colour,

creating an ice cream sundae feel.

Her crafty design hides shelves
behind a folding table,

and seats on casters can combine
to form a day bed.

She's adding vinyl flooring,
a changing area,

and finally, her cherry on the top
of the sundae,

a waffle-looking wooden pegboard.

The owners like spring-summer
pastels,

but I'm not really a pastels
kind of girl

and I wouldn't really use them
in my home,

so I had a bit of a, "Mm, what am I
going to do?"

Because it's not really me.

But then, it's not about you.

It's mainly about you taking
the client's brief

and creating something which you
feel they would like,

but making maybe a slight tweak
on it.

So mixing the coloured tiles
onto the white

was getting the colour in there,
but quite subtle -

without doing big blocks of it.

But I've got all of this wall to do

and all of that wall over there
to do.

So I need to get all the tiles up
today

so that I can grout tomorrow.

No pressure.

Further down the beachfront...

We're breaking the hut.
It has to go.

..Charlotte is grappling with her
Hamptons, not Hamptons brief.

I could keep it. You're going to
keep that, aren't you? Yeah.

I've been looking at kind of
interior designers

that are kind of doing new spins
on the Hamptons

that aren't blue and white.

And there was a lot of kind of
curved,

really fun contemporary furniture.

And also a lot of stuff came
up about Jackson Pollock,

as he was one of the people that
first found the place

and made it cool to have
a house there.

And I thought that would be quite
nice to inspire my own....

..scheme.

Charlotte's design will have two
distinct areas.

In the back is a dark forest-green
nook hosting two bespoke benches.

A lighter minty-white colour
at the front of the hut

will show off a kitchenette.

And an art piece paying tribute to

abstract expressionist painter
Jackson Pollock

will double as a table.

Green and white striped fabric and
pops of orange and yellow

with black accents will pull the
Hamptons scheme together.

It's a real mixture,

but I think a good design has got
layers and different inspirations.

I just wanted to prove that you can
make a cheery, bright space

and it doesn't have to be a garish
colour on every wall.

Like, the matte black finish is
quite luxy-looking

and is good for wood and things
like that,

so it's still beachy.

Probably the worst feedback
I could get, like,

"Why the hell did you choose those
colours? They're disgusting."

Ah!

Now I just need to do the back.

Unlike the other designers,

Paul has chosen to do the exterior
of his beach hut first.

So, once I place all these sticky
polka dots on this panel,

we're going to paint over it pink,

and then, when I peel them off, the
blue polka dots will be underneath.

So it'll hopefully give a real nice
clean edge.

Right.

Oh!

Absolutely love the bamboo cladding.

I realised, actually, the original
hut was pink and turquoise,

which isn't far off the
dusty pink and teal

that I've changed it to.

"Where did this idea for pink and
turquoise come from?"

So you're going against the brief,

No, the brief is "don't do
blue and white."

Do an alternative.

Yeah.
But that's, like, what do you do?

It's one of those things where you
could get it wrong very easily.

just to do your own thing
and do my own design.

You know, you're managing the trades
and all that kind of stuff.

I wouldn't say I've got, like,
major concerns,

but I'm looking round now
and I'm thinking,

"Gosh, it's really, really bright."

on function over decor.

We had to build things to be clever
to make most use of the space,

and I started off thinking of doing
it in wood,

but then the metalwork has made it
more elegant

and kind of sit back
and tuck out the way

when it's all folded up a bit
better.

And it's meant it could be
a slimmer profile.

Is this something deep and
meaningful?

No, it's so when you're sat at the
table behind you,

when it's folded down and you're
sitting that way,

eating your dinner, you can still

The paint that I'm using, I've been
ambitious and mixed this myself,

back in Belfast,

and brought it the whole way here
with me.

You know, it's easy to lift a paint
chart.

Already you see the outside,
how good it looks

and how strong it looks.

It's a real sharp pink.

I'm not probably the best
upholsterer in the world,

maybe the best tiler,

or the best painter and decorator.

But I'm willing to give it a shot

and I think, as long as it
shows that I'm trying,

and I can't try any harder.

New England beach hut...

I was carving with my nail.

..Charlotte is etching
flower patterns

into her mint-white paint.

Hamptons interiors are quite famous
for having floral prints,

so I'm going to try and bring in
a floral element with this wall

and, like, do a base layer of gesso,

and then kind of carve flowers
and stuff -

so it feels a bit floral.

Rather than having, like,
a floral cushion.

That's the plan.

Now there's only five of us,

you want to be more and more
ambitious.

You will get picked apart if you're
not managing the time well.

So, yeah, I'm worried I'm not
going to finish.

Ooh, it's getting a bit windy.

changeable weather.

So, there was a little incident...

the kitchen area...

The inside looks a bit wet still.

Yeah, the wood was so saturated
yesterday that the paint, in places,

still isn't dry.

And the designers have just 12 hours
to get their first solo projects

fully finished before judgment time.

So, I think we'll have this one
where the bird's looking in.

And then we're going for the other

Isn't it lovely to be
by the seaside?

Oh, in the sun, definitely.
It's lovely today.

We've got so lucky today with the
weather, haven't we?

So, tell me what you're doing,
Queen of Upholstery.

I've made some benches

and I'm just cutting out some
back cushions for them...

Yeah. ..which I'm going to attach
to the wall. A bit like a headboard.

Now, home from home's
quite a generic brief.

How are you going to put
your stamp on it?

What's your home like?

I mean, my home's full of soft
furnishings, obviously.Of course.

So I'm just trying to find
that balance between having enough

home furnishings, making sure
that the seating area, the kind

of sofa-y, lounge sections,
are nice and comfortable.

And this is such a small space.

I'm not putting too much in. I don't
want to...Well, you can't, look at
the size of it.

It's like a telephone box.
Yeah, exactly.

So it's going to be nice
and spacious and open and fresh.

And this is the first time
you're working by yourself.

Yeah, it's tough, because you don't
really have an opportunity

to make an error.

You know, if you don't manage
to pull something together

in the time, that's it, really,
so...

We'll see what Michelle says.

At Lynsey's, yet another storage
solution is under construction.

I am building some cubes,
which will be seats on casters,

or can come together
and form a daybed

with the bench that's at the back.

So I've really tried to think about
the functionality of the space.

Everything in here is for a reason
and a function,

except from that.

Just liked it.

There's going to be a changing area
there that'll fold out.

It's not very ice cream sundae,
but it reflects all the colours

from outside into the room
and breaks up all the white.

So it's not functional,
but it looks beautiful.

building and woodwork, Charlotte

has her brushes out, crafting
the painting at the heart

of her vision.

So, I'm doing a Jackson
Pollock-inspired table that,

basically, I want it to look like
an artwork on the wall,

and then, when it's down,
it's a table.

I think people that own houses in
the Hamptons are quite affluent.

It's quite an expensive place.

So maybe they enjoy having a nice
piece of abstract art on their wall.

Yes. OK, that needs to dry.

I'm loving that bamboo.
It's cool, isn't it?

I know a panda that'd like to
eat that.

Look how thick that is.

How do you get bamboo that thick?

Well, I think that's just
how it comes.Right.

I've got to know you over the weeks.

Obviously I don't

but I feel this is pure Siobhan.

And what about the... Now, I'm not
being rude, is this the floor

No, this is going and I've got
a bamboo print liner going down.

I think with the colours
and everything, I think

it'll just kind of balance it out.

And I've got some grass skirts
going up here, so I've got these.

Right, guys, these are going on the
painting list.

What colour? Black. Obvs.

I'm going to start getting these
glued up now.

What I'm doing is glueing
the base of an LED light

to the record on the ceiling,

and then I'm going to have, like,

an LED spotlight on it.

So it will look like that.

And there'll be 12 of those
inside the hut.

I don't try and go completely
off the wall in my designs,

but I always like to add in
a wee quirky touch.

Wow, this is looking gorgeous.

It's like an artist's
beach residence.

Oh, I'll take that.

That's so cosy in there.

I kind of feel like going in
and having a sleep.

There are only
a few hours left on day two

before the designers
have to down tools.

Start there square. Yeah.

But Lynsey has just started building
yet another multi-functional

piece of furniture.

So this is like a peg board.

The users of the hook can put these
pegs in wherever they want,

so it can either be a hook

or, if you put them next to each
other in a row, it's like a shelf.

I'm hopeful everything
that I've got planned can get done.

But there isn't a lot of time.

If it's not, it's going
to be a bit of a nightmare.

The clock is ticking and Paul
is also feeling the pressure.

If I leave more stuff here,

Yeah, it feels very diner-y.

And does that table fold away
and stuff? Yes.

That table just lifts up, the leg
folds down, and then I have another

seat pad attached to a board
and it just slots in the middle

and then that turns into a bit of,
like, a daybed or somewhere kids

can go for a nap or read a book.
Very cool.

Very smart.

Seeing Paul's hut has shaken
Micaela's confidence

in her own build.

You know, I go into all of the other
designers' rooms and I think,

"Oh, that was good that they did
that and, you know, they thought

"about something in a way
that I wouldn't have."

I mean, before I started
this competition, if I wanted

to have a piece of furniture,
I always would have looked for it.

But now I realise you can
just build it from scratch.

But, yeah, there's still a long
way to go, I think,

still lots more to learn.

In her tiki hut...

I think maybe just, let's just take
it a little bit further that way.

..Siobhan is creating texture by
adding bamboo cladding

to her pink wall.

Do you want a little bit showing?

Yeah, a little bit showing, yeah.
A little bit of pink, you know,

like, just popping out.

Yeah, perfect, let's get that
stapled up.

I kind of tried to use the bamboo
in a clever way,

but, oh, I hope people don't think
that I've designed this for me,

because I have made sure that I am
designing with the client in mind.

It just depends if they think
I've gone too far, I guess.

I always, you know, second-guess
myself, really,

and have these conversations.

And it's like, "Oh, you know,
have I hit the brief?

"Is Michelle going to like it?" And,
you know, at the end of the day,

I just want to kind of stay
in the competition.

So, you know, I kind of want
to make sure that it's right.

I think three up here, the same
sort of thing as that.

The designers have just one hour
left to complete their vision...

Normally, I'd have all
my accessories in by this point.

..and it's a race against time.

I need to get a piece of
artwork hung.

The carpenter has to put
up the awning here, so...

..yeah, I'm pushed for time.

It's frantic!

Once again, Lynsey's pushed herself
about as far as she can go.

Stressed. Just wish I had a bit
more time.

I don't know if I can reach.

And it's to give extra
shade, I'm guessing.

Yeah, or maybe you could just stand
and hold it.

I've got nothing else to do.
That would be a good selling point.

My career's down the toilet,
I could stand here.

Most huts are close to completion...

Oh, yeah!

..but Paul has to deal with yet
another time-consuming setback,

this time with his awning.

We've just had to rejig how we're
going to fit the hinges.

eye over the beach huts, the judges.

We've got the five separate
beach huts, the five separate

designers, and each one
has got a very specific brief.

We do everything from kind of
'50s retro to Tropicana.

Helping Michelle this week is
Queen of Unapologetic Colour

Sophie Robinson, podcast host and
interior designer for over 20 years.

I mean, beach huts really
are that perfect combination

between fun, because you want this
kind of escapist interior,

but also big on the practicality.

Yeah, I love small spaces.

They present the ultimate
challenge, don't they?

And I'm going to want to see loads
of clever design solutions.

I mean, there's going to be picnics,
beachwear, surfboards.

How are you going to fit
all of that in a tiny space

and still make it look fabulous?

First hut to be judged, Micaela.

OK, I think I'm done.

Yeah, I'm happy with everything.

I hadn't designed any rooms
before I started this competition,

so I'm kind of figuring it out as I
go along, but I'm feeling pretty

good about my hut.

My design has come together
exactly as I'd planned.

Definitely feels homely,
which is my brief.

Well, my first impressions
are I think that's so beautiful.

Shall we go and have a little look?
Yes, let's have a look.

I'm loving the colour palette.

I have to say, I really agree
with you.

There's some lovely kind of quite
warm pastel colours going on here,

the ombre on the wall
as well, even the towels,

all the fabrics chosen.

What she has achieved is a feeling
of softness, somewhere to

kick back and relax.

And this is where her soft
furnishing comes into play.

And I think really clever
to use these outdoor fabrics.

And they mirror the view outside.

I'm really loving the connection
that I've got inside,

and the outside beach scene as well.

I mean, I imagine that the theme
of, like, being homely is simply

to make it feel like a little house.

It's like a little Wendy house.

And in that respect, that is exactly
what this is, isn't it?

It's a rather lovely little
Wendy house.

I mean, I guess it's quite
predictable,

if I was going to be quite harsh...
Are you not wowed?

No, I really like it.

I feel very comfortable here.

I think it's really, like,
super-pretty.

If I was going to start
getting really nit-picky, I guess

I would imagine everything is quite,
sort of, the predictable things

you'd do in a small space - put
things on casters, foldaway tables,

kind of housing everything
over here.

And look at that beautiful
wool rug on the floor.

It's quite large.

Can you imagine sandy, wet
footprints running

in and out of here?

I mean, that's just going
to get dirty and smelly.

We've got candles...

Lynsey is adding her final
decorative flourishes.

The budget on this one
was difficult.

I got a lot of things
from charity shops.

The clock was £1.50.

Done.

I really hope I've hit the brief.

Tried really hard, read it loads
of times this week and kept checking

through and picking out
the key points.

So, I think in terms
of the multifunctional use,

still feeling spacious, feeling
light, using the pastels

that they wanted,

I really hope I hit it.

It feels really fresh and modern.

I don't feel like I'm in
the archetypical vintage
ice cream parlour.

Yeah. This wall, I love it.

I think it's absolutely beautiful.

I love the balance of the pink
and the turquoise and the texture

and how this fits and the little
bits of mirror.

I'm really impressed with how she's
thought multi-function.

I think there's some clever ideas
in here.

I am super impressed to see her
utilising the ceiling space,

because when space is really tight,

you need to use absolutely every
opportunity for storage,

and even, like, paddle boards
and stuff could go up there.

There's lots of, like, great
practical ideas,

like we've got the storage
under my bench.

You've got the little kind of
seats on casters again.

Different ways to hold things up.

But I'm finding it very busy.

I'm just so distracted
by the sort of

lack of finesse in the decor.

You've got something like that,
that's quite sort of pragmatic
and clever

and I could pull out the pegs
and I could hang my things.

Why, then, have these funny
twinky little shelves?

Why not carry that language across?
Cos they're two different things.

And like the little trolley
with the funny twinky bits on it.

She's over-egged this. Yeah.

I don't feel like you need
the gold and the black.

And actually, I would have lost
the black because, for me,

it's just quite hard in
quite a soft pastel-y space.

And it's a shame because in terms
of planning, thoughtfulness,

layout, innovative design details,
she's really impressed me.

Next up, Siobhan is feeling
the pressure.

I love doing, you know, the final,
the styling bit,

but just stressed.

I just wish I had a bit more time.

There's no denying, it's definitely
a tiki vibe,

but I must admit, I am the least
confident this week
out of all the weeks.

I don't know, like, overall,

like, if I've taken the brief
too literal.

So, yeah, I'm... Mixed emotions.

This hut has been designed by
Siobhan, who I think you are going

to have a natural affinity with.

Well, already I've been transported
from the British seafront

and I'm feeling like I'm in some
tropical tornado.

Aloha!

THEY LAUGH

Oh, yeah, we haven't quite got
the swaying palm trees views

but, I mean, I'm in heaven.

I'm just going to come straight
out and say it.

Well, I am compelled to go inside.

Come on.

Pina colada?

It's just so much fun.

I love it.

I mean, look at this brilliant
kind of tiki bar thing

that's been set up. At last, a great
big mirror

at the back of the beach hut
to reflect that gorgeous view.

It might surprise you that I love
this, too.

OK? I'm speechless.

Because it's a coherent vision.

It all fits together.
It's all about brightness -

from the orange to the turquoise
to the pink,

they're all full-fat colours.

One set of materials carried through
on every floor.

Even the flooring,

it's vinyl, but it has that
kind of idea of bamboo,

which is taken up the walls,

down from the ceilings,
onto the walls.

I mean, it's...

Yeah. It's verging on genius.

It's fabulous.

Practicalities - has she answered
that brief?

I mean, you have got loads of
cupboards, I think, which is good.

I've got storage underneath there.

Yep.

OK, I can't fold my tiki bar away,

but using a kind of curved...

..makes it kind of, sort of not
take up too much space.

The chairs fold. Buckets and spades
and stuff could go in those.

It's just, it's a complete and
singular and coherent statement

that's unapologetic, and I love it.

A few beach huts away,
Charlotte is still painting.

Ooh!

I just wanted to finish off things
and like, you know,

paint more and make everything
like pristine.

I'm done.

I hope Michelle will like my design.

I think it's sophisticated,
which was in my brief,

but then I think it's also like
my new spin on the Hamptons.

There wasn't a set way to do that

because it was down to me
to make that decision,

so I just hope she likes my
interpretation of the brief.

I couldn't have done any more.

Now, New England is such
a classic, well-known look.

It's that pared-back,
blue-and-white nautical,

and I'm so glad she hasn't gone
for that.

So instead, we've got kind of
minty green, black,

dark green, racing green. Yellow.

What do you think of the colour
scheme? Does it work?

It's not...

..got that sort of
naturally uplifting kind of feel
to it, has it?

This is probably my happiest place.
I love this.

I love the sunny yellow, I love how
it links with this.

I think that's quite important

cos this is a design detail
that had to stay.

But this whole treatment here

is puzzling me,
I'm not going to lie.

This is very much something that's
become almost a bit of

a kind of Charlotte signature.

I mean, you can see it behind you
in the kind of

ode to Jackson Pollock table
as well.

Would you really know that's
a Jackson Pollock painting,

or would you think someone's
dribbled paint on the back
of a table?

I don't think she's pulled that off.

No. What works really well
is having this minty-green front,

and then, as I go back here,
having the darker colour.

It does make this feel kind of quite
cosy and safe.

But I feel like it's missing soul.

Even maybe just a bit
of vintage wood, something with
a bit of patina.

It's all very painted.

There are no natural textures
in here. It lacks warmth.

I think that's where the black
was quite a tricky choice.

Yes, it helps elevate and make
it look a bit sophisticated,

but it's a very hard, cold colour.

And I guess, also, we're constantly
pulled and pushed

between that sort of battle between
kind of adding the clever bits.

So we have got the foldout table.
We've got some kind of poles.

A pole for hanging things here.

Practical flooring.
Durable materials.

Tick, tick, tick, tick, tick.

But it's very simple.

Is it too simple?

Yes, is the answer to that.

Last but not least, Paul.

Oh, I'm just running on adrenaline
at the minute.

I've given it everything I've got
for two full days,

but, yeah, I'm finished.

My head's absolutely pounding.

I feel sick.

But this is what I want to do,
and if I felt like this every week,

I'd still do it.

So I hope it's clear to the judges

how passionate I am about
interior design

and how much I want to be here.

So this is Paul's ode
to a '50s retro diner.

Can you tell? I'm really impressed
with how he's treated

the outside of the beach hut
before I even get

to the inside. The signage,

the typography is totally spot on.
And the polka dots.

Yeah, it's fun, isn't it?

And the theme is thoroughly carried
out inside, too.

He's absolutely nailed it
from the colour scheme,

the chequerboard floor,
the chrome furniture.

He's hitting all those 1950s
design references.

For me, possibly, this is tipping
it a little bit too far.

This is going into bad taste,
but maybe I'm being over picky.

Can we talk about the ceiling?

SHE LAUGHS

This is... It's just fun.

You know, some might find it
a bit kitschy, but it works.

And it also is of the language
of the rest of the design,

because the whole thing
is kind of retro.

It goes with the dresser.
It goes with this.

But then we've also married in
the kind of clever ideas

with the table that folds
back completely,

and then there's an extra little bit
here that comes out

and can slot in between. It makes
this into a whole little bed.

Yeah, well, that's really clever,
isn't it?

And I suppose one thing as well
I love is there's a place

to put boards,
multifunctional furniture,

and yet I don't walk in here
and think,

"Oh, this is very practical."

I literally think
I'm just in a 1950s diner.

Well, that's it. I mean, that's what
we started talking about

at the very beginning of looking
at these huts.

It's that marriage between
the practicality and the beauty.

And suddenly, here it is
in three dimensions.

And that's when I think design
and decoration come together

and really, really work.

Before the designers return
to the studio,

they take a sneaky peek at their
rivals' efforts.

when you see each other's designs

and seeing Siobhan's,
hers is incredible.

I would definitely, like, definitely

Everyone's very much taken
a different approach.

Paul's is like an amazing diner
that you literally feel

like you're in, like,
a beach-side restaurant.

And Lynsey's got kind of insane,
like, architectural things in hers.

as best we can, but...

..someone's got to go in there.

There is a career-defining contract
at stake

as the designers return
to Michelle's studio

to discover their fate.

Yeah, it's hard. It'd be great
to do a Paul, fly through

and not go on the sofa.
That would be amazing.

My confidence has now dropped
a little.

Probably the most nervous
in the whole...

..the whole competition so far.

Yeah. We did. It was lovely.

I'm just not an
outdoors person, Alan.

It was not what I expected at all.

Right, enough of this chitchat.
Let's hear the results.

The judges both agreed
that this challenge wasn't as simple

as it first appeared.

But for Michelle, good design
is getting the right balance

between the practical
and the decorative,

and that's what the judges
were looking for this week.

There are two designers who got
this spot on.

The confidence that they showed
in their designs

really set them apart.

One in particular added that
little extra magic

that wowed the judges.

Siobhan, your hut
was universally loved.

So the three that we have on
the sofa is kind of almost

someone who did a bit too much,
in my opinion,

someone I think didn't really
do enough,

and then kind of someone in
the middle, and that was Micaela.

I quite liked it, though.
I felt it was very homely.

It was lovely. But did she push
the envelope enough?

Did she try different things?
Could she have done more?

Now, Lynsey's again, very clever.

You know, tick, tick, tick in terms
of ingenuity

of that multi-purpose design,
which is a big part of the brief,

but then, aesthetically,
it missed, didn't it?

This is where I started getting
the right heebie jeebies

because there was just too much
going on there for me.Yeah.

Now poor old Charlotte. What didn't
you like about that?

It was just paint.
Where was the texture?

Where was the kind of excitement?
Yeah. Where was those extra layers?

Where was the real kind of design
and decor?

A lot got missed out, I feel.

Well, shall we see what they've got
to say?

Absolutely.

Hi. Hi. Hello. Hello.

It was tricky, this one,
wasn't it?

It had to be pretty, it had to be
attractive, it had to be practical,

it had to have small space ideas,

and you're probably wondering, like,
"Why am I here?

"I answered the brief. You know,
what could I have done wrong?"

So, Charlotte, if I can start
with you.

I mean, you seem to me that you...

..sometimes don't really do enough.

And then the next one, you show
me that you can do all this
amazing stuff. Yeah.

And this one I just felt,
"Oh, the hut was quite plain."

Cos, in the end, the surfaces
were just painted.

Yeah. But I wondered
if you were distracted

by the fact that you had to keep
the stained glass panels?

Because maybe I would have just
run with those.

So I could have, obviously, extended
the yellow and extended the blue,

but then, maybe the window would
have got washed out,

so I chose to use pops
of the opposite

to make a feature of the window,
if that makes sense.

It does, cos the thing is
when you start talking about colour,

you get really excited. Yeah.
And I can feel that.

But that's not what
translated to us.

And forest green and black
isn't the colours

that I would automatically
put with a seaside, uplifting...

They're quite heavy colours,
aren't they?

So I was surprised
at that colour choice.

But green is just... Dark green's
quite sophisticated to me,

and that was in my brief.

And then the black made my deck
chairs look really expensive,

with the yellow.
I really liked them, so...

But then, knowing you, you're all
into the pattern and the texture

and prints and artistry.
Why did you not, then,

take the sort of
Jackson Pollock thing

and, like, Pollock the whole hut?

Cos that would have been
a really explosive alternative view.

So that was obviously a choice
I had to make.

I could have Pollock-ed a wall
versus that,

but then I thought, "I'm pushing it
into like a maximalist brief."

Like in the Hamptons, you don't
really have

big feature wallpaper walls
or anything like that.

OK. If we move over to Lynsey.

By contrast, I feel that you threw

loads of clever ideas and colours,

and yet your brief
was just ice cream colours.

So as I was thinking about the
different...all the kind of, for me,

the ice cream sundae's got different
elements in there,

like the smooth, soft ice cream,

which is what I was doing
with the tiles on the back wall,

but then there's like the big dark
sauces and chocolate sauce

and the hundreds and thousands

and, I suppose, I've kind of gone
down that route of it as well.

I've put in quite a lot of bits
in there,

because that's how I kind of see
the function...

You know when you put a sundae
together and you've got all the pots

of the different elements, you've
got all the different sweets
and the different jars,

so I tried to think of ways
of bringing those ideas in,

but combining them with
the practical side of the brief.

I just... There was just too much
going on.

It felt overwhelming in there.
It felt quite cluttered and busy

and not that tasty, sweet,
soft sundae.

And you talked about the chocolate
sauce being the dark,

but that's not black, is it?

Can you imagine a beautiful sundae

with jet-black, tarry
treacle on it?

So it's that nuance of colour.

You know, that black is - a little
bit similar to you, Charlotte -

it's such a hard, deadening colour.

And yes, interior designers love
it cos it makes things look

sophisticated and high-end and sexy,

but look, the brief was
for something quite soft and tasty.

Yeah.But can I say as well,
you wanted clever storage.

You so delivered. It was ingenious.

I mean, if Q, who works
for James Bond, ever, like, retires,

you'd be perfect cos there's
gadgets, there's things folding up,

there's multi-use.
It is amazing to see.

Micaela, your brief was like
a home from home.

It felt lovely and sweet and cosy

and had a very, I think, convivial
feel is the word I would use.

Maybe if I'm going to...

Cos this is the point
where we get super picky.

It was a bit predictable.

Yeah. I guess it was perhaps
a bit predictable

but, then, a home, for me,

should be a bit more typical.

I tried to think of it
as a small space,

but, you know, how could you change
it each time you went there

and move the benches round or take
bits outside conveniently,

so I tried to tick those boxes.

I mean, do you think you could
have pushed it more?

Could you have had a little bit more
of, like, kind of Lynsey's

fold up, flat down kind of thing,
action going on?

Yeah, I did really focus a lot

on making things kind of versatile,

like my benches. I wanted them
to have storage in,

and I wanted the backs to be also
kind of multi-purpose

that you could have them there
as the backs or you could take them
down if you wanted to.

I made my kitchen area
so that you could pull bits out

and I decided to layer some rugs
that would give kind of a warmth.

There's nothing warm
about a soggy, wet, wool rug...

No, that's true. ..at the end of the
day that you're squelching across.

Yeah, yeah. I can totally see that,
to be honest.

So...

Loads to love about all
your projects,

and in that exotic jigsaw puzzle
that is design

of concept, the magic,
the colour, the innovation,

two of you bundled it together

better than the other one - just.

So this week...

..Charlotte, I'm afraid I'm going
to be sending you home.

It is getting harder and harder to
draw a line between these designers,

and Charlotte has the most
incredible eye for colour,

for texture and for pattern.

It just didn't gel together

as well as I wanted to see
this week.

I feel gutted, obviously,

but I'm definitely proud of myself.
I really like my beach hut,

so I'm glad to have left on
something I really was happy with.

It just makes me want to do

like a whole beach-side hotel in
that design, so it's kind of...

Yeah, thinking bigger now, I think,
than just the beach hut.

Surprised? Relieved? Shocked?

Really relieved.

I was convinced I was going

cos there was a lot of
kind of negatives,

so I'm a bit disappointed in myself
for that.

Yeah, I am happy to go through.
Quite phenomenal, really,

to be in the final four.

I think we can start to dream now,
the four of us,

and think what could be.

If I could give both of you,
like, one piece of advice,

it's just enjoy it, OK?

Have faith in yourself, courage
in your convictions and just enjoy.
