- That's being organized by Mr. Sonny Silverton.

- He's here at the hotel?

- He's staying with the staff.

- Well he's the man I got to see.

You worked here long?

- Not too long.

- I'm from Colorado originally.

But since I've been working for Club Med

I've been all over the place, France, Haiti, Egypt.

When I came here a couple of months ago

it was just like coming home.

- You must do a lot of skiing.

- Yeah, I do lots of skiing, but I do more eating.

(Bobby laughing)

- There's some really nice looking ladies here.

- That one sure is.

- I have trouble meeting them

because they think I'm crazy.

- Try the macho approach.

It seems to work sometimes.

- You think so?

It's all a matter of style.

You just gotta work at it.

I kind of half promised it to Yogi though.

- Sure, I'm easy.

- So all I really have to do

you know what I mean?

I can't wait.

Did you see how those girls

were hanging out with the pros last night?

- Oh, they loved the skiers.

They do, the girls love 'em all the time.

- No, go right ahead.

- You ever been flanked this early in the day?

- No, not recently.

- Aren't you Sonny's assistant?

- That's right.

- Yeah.

Well I'm Jackson Reach, this is Bobby Todd.

- [Michelle] It seems everybody does.

- Yes, I do.

- Really Jackson, you ought to go at this slowly.

- Look, the only thing that's gonna be moving slowly today

is that humongoid coming down the hill.

You know what I'm talking about?

I have some prep work to do on my skis.

my hometown.

- No, but I think I made the mistake

of falling in love with my boss.

Makes it impossible for me to do my job.

I love my work and I love him

so I have both to lose.

- Doesn't he feel the same way?

- He thinks I'm just a kid.

I don't know how to make him notice me.

and that would hurt worse than being fired.

- I asked him what his name was and if he drove a truck.

featuring the one and only romping Ronnie Hawkins.

It will be continuing until the semifinals

and the finals of this dual format.

It's head to head world pro ski championships, as you know,

and they'll be getting underway here this afternoon.

There's plenty of action coming up.

to the top of the hill right now.

We have an amateur challenge race about to start.

It'll be between Jackson Reach of Chicago

and our own Yogi Hebadaddy of Dillon, Colorado.

- How you been keeping, Yogi?

- Not bad.

Got a race today.

- [Jackson] How you doing big fella?

- Hey, I was worried about you.

- Just waxing my skis.

- Sounds serious.

Which course do you want, the blue or the red?

- I'll take the red, thank you.

- [Dan] The winner of this race

is going to qualify, as you know, for the Pro-Am

that will take place immediately

after the championship. - Thanks for the sandwich.

- In the starting heap right now,

it's Jackson Reach and Yogi Hebedaddy.

They're getting ready for the start.

Jackson in the red course, Yogi in the blue.

And they're off.

Yogi's off with a good start.

He makes it to the first gate.

(upbeat music)

More Hebedaddy.

Jackson Reach is well behind him at this point.

Jackson makes a good turn,

lining up well to the top of the course,

setting up well for that next gate.

There he is setting up that gate.

He's off to the jump

and it's a good one.

Hebedaddy is still taking the race

by a considerable amount.

And he's gotten to the finish line.

Hebedaddy with a 1.150 second lead.

This is a significant victory

and it means Hebedaddy will move right now

into the celebrity program.

- Nice race, Jackson.

- We are now down to the semifinals

in the World Professional Ski Championship,

ladies and gentlemen,

from that original field of 32.

And in the top half of the draw,

it will be Stein Halsnes of Norway.

He will be on the blue course

and he will be going against Hans Spiegel of Austria.

He's in the red course

in our first semifinal of this elimination type event.

They're at the top.

Ready at the start,

both racers are in start position.

There goes the signal and they're off.

Spiegel got a little better start,

but he's a bit ahead of Hals

as Hals is skiing very well

in the top part of the course.

Here he comes over that first hill.

Still very even.

A very close race down the flat.

It's Halsnes and Spiegel going side by side,

a really good side of what pro racing's all about.

Here they come.

Hals is trying to see

but here he comes.

And he's down across the finish line.

And so Stein Halsnes of Norway

advances to the finals.

And he is one step away

from the World Championship

that he has trained so hard for

over the past couple of years.

In the blue course,

Edwin Halsnes, brother of Stein,

ready to go against William West.

Ready to start,

it's West with a slight lead.

Both skiers really skiing.

Hals is the man to watch at the top of the course.

Let's see who goes down there.

The shot of West coming in,

heading out for that first jump,

it's gonna be Hals with the lead off that first jump.

Hals is maintaining a lead

of about one half a gate.

It'll be about 23 seconds.

(upbeat music)

Hals still has that slight lead.

He's maintaining that lead.

It looks like it's gonna be Hals coming in.

Halsnes in first.

The finals in the World Professional Ski Championship.

At the top, it's Halsnes versus Halsnes.

They're at the top and they are ready.

They're getting through the starting gate

and they're off very fast at the start.

(upbeat music)

He's very fast, but Edwin has a slight edge

on the slalom course.

He has the lead right now.

Both very good racers.

Young, aggressive, both very fit.

Let's see how they do.

It's gonna be close.

It's Edwin across the finish line first.

(skier clapping)

- How you doing, Bobby? (laughing)

Hey, it's okay.

Michelle told me all about it.

I want to thank you.

- Oh really?

- Well I do Harry Mulligan a lot better.

You know, you can really go far with those impressions.

- Yeah, not with women I won't.

when I start up with that stuff.

It scares them away.

The problem is when I get around women,

I can't be myself, whatever that is.

- Yeah, well you know something, Bobby,

I used to be a lot like you.

No, I don't mean I did impressions or anything,

but I thought I should be other people.

- Hey.

- I'm all right,

except for losing my race

to that skiing beer mug down there.

- I know, the beer mug can ski pretty good.

- Yeah everybody knew it but me too.

- Some knowledge is sacred.

- Yeah, you know he's not such a bad guy either.

You know, he could have beaten me a lot worse I think.

- Oh, come on.

- Yeah, he let up on me a little bit.

Nothing worse than getting beaten

by somebody you've been bad mouthing

and he turns out to be a decent guy.

- Pro-Am, Jackson Reach of Chicago

will replace Yogi Hebadaddy

and he will be going up against Edwin Halsnes.

- What's that all about?

- You're in the race.

- I'm not in the race.

Yogi beat me, thank you very much anyway.

- Yogi also got you in the race.

- Yogi did?

- Yeah.

- How did he do that?

- Simple, he had Sonny put you in instead of himself.

- Yogi did that?

- Yogi's had his day.

Used to be on the US ski team for 10 years.

He's got nothing to prove.

- You're right, Sonny.

I've been trying too hard.

- Maybe. - I got to loosen up,

have some fun.

I'm gonna learn how to ski.

- Hey, that's the spirit.

Hey, and it's easy.

You know, all you have to do is imitate Jean-Claude Killy.

- Get out of here.

(Sonny laughing)

- Or do Bruce Dern doing Jean-Claude Killy.

Hey that's good.

- Where are the poles?

- It's the waterbed salesman,

Jackson Reach in the blue course

against Edwin Halsnes who'll be going in the red course.

And this one should just be a fun event.

But the waterbed salesman, Jackson Reach, seems very keen.

He wants to prove his stuff against Edwin Halsnes,

who doesn't seem to be letting up a bit at all.

And I'm a bit surprised

at the speed at which Jackson Reach

seems to have reached today.

Of course, Edwin Halsnes is first off the first bump,

but it's a very close race.

Both skiers look very good at this point.

I didn't know that Jackson Reach

was this fast of a skier.

And I do not think that Edwin Halsnes

was aware of that fact either.

It's gonna be a fun race indeed.

We may have a surprise upset.

That remains to be seen.

Across the finish line, of course, Edwin Halsnes.

But our hats off to Jackson Reach of Chicago,

a great racer.
