Well, since I have retired from formal
corporate life, I've been busier than

ever. I'm doing podcasts, workshops,

I thought retirement was putting my legs

If I had a dollar for every time

is deeply personal.

It is personal because I have already
done it. I was 10 years in.

At PepsiCo. In January of that year, I
had successfully negotiated the deal

A few months later, we discovered that
my husband had terminal cancer. Peter

Daniel St. John was my husband.

I was looking for my Black Prince
Charming.

And then here comes the ginger haired.

Italian background, gold chain wearing,
no black friends type of guy.

Everything that could be different
between us was.

But it worked for us.

And three months later, he died.

You know, all these years later, I still
can't find the words, really, to be

honest with you. I can't describe what
it felt like. One of the most difficult

things about losing Peter was knowing
that Lael would be fatherless. They

each other so.

He was robbed of the chance to be a
father. And Lael was robbed of a chance

be loved by her father for the rest of
her life. My daughter was turning four.

Lael and I have a really special bond.

I mean, you know, I think it was born
the day her dad died because it was just

the two of us.

In February of the following year, 2014,
I was up for review.

And so sitting there,

directly across my boss, who then said
to me, you know, you haven't hit enough

home runs in this job.

I knew in the moment, but it was time
for me to move on.

So that trauma and that pivot is what
has led me to this moment right here.

Well, this is a new era in my life. The
last ladder I climbed up in corporate

America was built by other people. This
new ladder is built by me, rung by rung.

The things that are happening in your
life don't have to make you sit down.

You can get up and do something.

You are the actual pivot.
