Welcome to day 100
of Fortitude, the Newfoundland edition.
Only three contestants remain
isolated from the outside world
and each other.
Living off the land
with meagre tools.
As I tell the kids that I help-
The universe always provides.
Relying-
on only themselves for food and shelter.
The wild will be tamed.
As they self record their own trials and tribulations
entirely-
alone!
I'm more at home here-
than home.
And whoever lasts the longest-
wins-
a million bucks!
Someone's favourite show is on, huh?
Of the ten original contestants
only Grimes, Tuttle, and Belfry remain-
having lasted longer than anyone
in the entire history of the Fortitude franchise.
And to mark such an auspicious occasion-
we're coming to you live!
Okay, Keith, get all the cameras hot and ready.
On it.
That's right.
Live to air!
And-
each contestant will get a live video call
with their spouse-
broadcast to thousands and thousands of viewers!
Standing by, Keith.
Lucy, coming to you.
First-
Lucy and Zack Belfry.
Okay, switch to the Belfrys.
Honey, can you hear me?
I can see you!
Loud and clear, Love.
How do I look?
Strong.
And in need of a bath.
More from you two later.
Now let's check in on the Grimeses.
Okay, live on Grimes.
Got him live.
Here comes Janis.
Oh, Perry!
Are you okay?
You look so weak.
I'm hanging in there.
No worries.
Wow.
That Grimes guy can't last much longer, right?
And now our final couple.
Jim Tuttle and his wife, Miriam.
Okay, go to the Tuttles.
Where is the contestant?
Give me a second.
We don't have a second.
Jim?
I can't see you.
Can you hear me?
Miriam, just stand by.
Okay, I think I've got him.
Don't think, go live!
Donovan says the mayor's all over this.
He wants to assure the public
that the death is being properly investigated.
Half the island was watching last night.
Yeah.
Meanwhile, it looks like a bear attack.
Wildlife officers are searching for it now.
Bears are rare on this part of the island I hear.
Are you sure this wasn't some other kind of animal?
Well, I'll show you what we've discovered so far.
The coroner's already removed the body from the scene.
But I'll be performing the autopsy.
Awesome.
Is there any sign of foul play?
My gut tells me something feels off.
Tuttle's body was found here.
There was a large volume of blood
indicating his jugular vein
was likely punctured.
I'll know more after the autopsy.
But there were no visible defensive wounds.
Might have been too weak to fight back.
Rex and I have been watching the show.
These contestants have been out here a long time.
Rex was watching?
He remembers when it's on-
Oh yeah.
And whines-
until I watch it with him.
Are these the bear tracks here?
There's a clear imprint-
here in the mud.
We'll take a cast.
It's not much of an indentation.
The bear must have been pretty lightweight.
Or it could have been sick.
Starving?
A healthy bear
wouldn't normally take the risk
of attacking a human.
Then again-
there's always the odd predatory animal.
Rex?
Hold up there, buddy!
Killer bears are no joke!
No more tracks.
What have you got there?
Could be fur.
Might be a bear.
I'll bag it and send it to the lab.
What's this?
More bear tracks?
Tires.
Maybe an ATV?
It could be how the TV crew reaches the campsites.
Well, Jesse's holding the crew of the show at their base camp
to be interviewed.
It's a couple of kilometres west of the campsites.
Can you get me an ATV?
It'd be great to have some wheels out here.
Yeah, I'll see what I can do.
Thanks.
Tires, huh?
Here you go!
Ah, thanks. -Yeah.
Who's who?
Well-
Okay, that's Sloane Castle over there.
She's the producer.
She seems a little bit stressed.
Because of the bear attack?
Well, it might just be her permanent state.
Can somebody get me a latte?
Okay thanks.
Yeah, I think I see what you mean.
Yeah.
Also, I spoke to the rest of the crew.
Nobody's actually seen a bear
since they started shooting out here.
Okay, could they be covering up-
saying what they've been told to
because production could be negligent?
It's possible.
I mean, if I had a boss like that-
I'd certainly keep my mouth shut.
An energy drink, something!
I have a call with the network in ten!
Wish me luck.
Yeah, good luck.
We're all in shock, Detective.
We've never had a significant animal attack on the show.
Was Tuttle supplied with bear spray?
No, all of our contestants are experienced outdoors people.
Hunters, fishers, foragers.
Nobody comes on Fortitude
without extensive bush craft experience.
I have to admit, I've been watching.
Oh, you're a fan?
I'm not sure that's totally accurate.
But I've seen enough
to know that some of the contestants are pretty weak
by the time they throw the towel in.
In no shape to fight for their life.
You're not suggesting
that production is somehow
responsible for this tragic accident?
I'm not a lawyer, Ms. Castle.
I'm just looking into the man's death
out of public interest.
Okay, well, I can assure you-
all of our contestants sign waivers.
So Mr. Tuttle participated at his own risk.
Sloane!
I hear the network wants us to film a tribute
to go before the next episode!
Ratings were through the roof!
Nico, this is Detective-
Hudson.
Rex and I have been looking into
this big ratings boost of yours.
Yes, um-
Horrible.
Tragic.
Yeah.
So you're continuing
the competition?
Even with a killer bear on the loose?
I'm sure you've heard the old saying, The show must go on.
Speaking of which, Nico.
I have to go shoot some social media clips
about Tuttle's tragic loss.
Uh-
Make up!
Is there anything else, Detective?
Uh, yeah.
Rex and I found an old ATV trail
near Tuttle's site.
And I see you have some all terrain vehicles here.
Yeah, we use the trails for emergencies
and to transport contestants when they drop out.
Okay.
Sloane!
Network's holding!
I beg you, I have to take this.
And now our final couple.
Jim Tuttle and his wife, Miriam.
Jim?
I can't see you.
Can you hear me?
Miriam, just stand by.
A killer bear on the Avalon.
And Rex was tracking it.
You are one brave dog.
But there was something odd about those tracks.
Odd how?
I don't know.
It just seemed strange how Rex suddenly lost the scent.
Sarah's back from the autopsy.
Wants me down there ASAP.
On it.
You found something?
Yeah.
I thought it might be easier to explain
with a little help from the tactical department.
So Tuttle's jugular was punctured, as I suspected.
So what was there to discover?
Here.
Looking straight on-
The edges of the wound are rough, right?
Torn.
But-? -But-
a cross-section of the cut reveals that the deepest part
is smooth.
You see?
Precise.
You mean like a knife blade smooth?
Exactly.
So the bear mauling
obscured the actual cause of death.
So the bear didn't kill Tuttle.
No.
No, he was murdered.
Just got off the phone with the studio that produces Fortitude.
Filming has been suspended pending the investigation.
What about the last two contestants?
Well, they're planning on staying at their campsites
until the show resumes.
They don't want to risk being disqualified.
Even though there's a bear and a murderer on the loose?
People are willing to take a lot of risk for a million dollars.
Jim Tuttle was stabbed.
And then his body was mauled by a bear.
Yeah.
Lucky the bear didn't make a meal of him.
Sarah never would have found the knife wound.
Guess the bear was scared off.
Yeah.
But by who?
And presumably, the murderer fled.
And the contestants
are supposed to be entirely alone out there.
No contact with crew or each other.
Then explain this.
Tuttle's shirt?
Yeah, bloodied-
and shredded by bear claws, but look
at the bright orange stain on the sleeve.
Let's see.
Yeah, you know what it looks like?
That, um-
that artificial cheese flavouring.
You know, from nacho cheese puffs.
There's more of the same in his stomach contents.
Assuming the neon orange didn't come from Mother Nature-
somebody was sneaking Tuttle food.
The same person who killed him.
What's up, Rex?
Nacho cheese fan too.
He's more of a liver bites kind of guy.
What's he up to?
What is it?
Borax?
Could this be on Tuttle's shirt?
Borax is a laundry supplement
used to brighten whites, not plaids.
So you're a laundry expert now?
Yeah, I like my T-shirts to pop!
Sarah, could you test the shirt for borax?
Absolutely.
Did you determine
a time of death?
Approximately an hour before the broadcast.
Rex and I should see what else we can discover
at the Fortitude site.
I'll talk to Tuttle's wife and see if she knows
who may have wanted to harm her husband.
A million dollar prize is a good motive for murder.
Millions in ratings could be, too.
It took me a while to figure out hunting.
But I bagged my first rabbit today.
I know my wife will be proud.
Okay, that's great, Keith.
Now switch to Tuttle-
eating the stew.
You're preparing clips of the victim?
For a tribute show, Detective.
We're airing the best of our Tuttle footage
since you've shut our production down.
Well, I hope you don't mind taking a few moments out
just to provide us with a list of everyone on your crew.
You can't suspect any of us.
We're all too busy to commit a murder.
Time of death was one hour before broadcast.
The campsite is just 20 minutes away.
That's plenty of time
for someone to get there and back.
I stand behind every one of my people.
I hired them all myself.
They're all professionals.
Are you sure that no one could have slipped out unnoticed?
Grabbed one of the ATVs?
Anyone missing would have been noticed.
We were scrambling to go live
and having trouble with one of the satellite feeds.
We only added
the live cameras to the site a couple of days ago.
Trouble with which one?
Tuttle's?
It happens, right?
Live TV is a nightmare.
Couldn't get his camera up at all the hour before.
Otherwise, we would have seen the body
before broadcasting that grisly image.
And possibly the murder.
You think-
the signal could have been tampered with?
It could have been interference.
Sun flares.
I'm going to have Detective Mills check on that.
But as long as those two contestants
are still out there-
keep their live feed up.
And call me if you-
if you see anything suspicious, please.
Will do.
I do not like the idea of someone messing with my show.
Well, I'm glad that you have your priorities straight.
Ms. Castle.
Do you always have these available here?
Coffee is my primary food group.
But help yourself if you like.
Good eyes, Rex.
Or nose, I suppose.
Hey, Sarah!
Hey!
I need your opinion on something.
Sure, anything.
So I have been watching episodes of Fortitude-
for research.
For research.
Yes.
And-
I've got to say-
I'm really into it.
It's really inspiring.
Okay!
I read they have a new season coming up.
Uh-oh, where is this going?
I'm going to try out for it.
You?
Yeah, I think it would be a great experience!
Have you ever even camped out?
I've glamped.
Mmm!
But the bed was terrible.
Jesse, these people are sometimes out there for about
three months.
You know what?
I'll start small.
Two weeks in Gros Morne.
Mmm.
You want to come with me?
No, I don't think so.
Okay.
That's a good talk.
Okay!
Papers?
Yeah, just work.
Jim was murdered?
I'm sorry to have to tell you.
Can you think of anyone
who may have wanted to harm your husband?
Anyone in his past?
No.
No one.
Jim was a mild-mannered man.
He had no enemies.
And how were things between the two of you?
Excuse me?
I'm sorry-
Mrs. Tuttle, but I have to ask.
It's a homicide investigation.
We were fine.
I can't believe you'd even suggest-
If anyone might have wanted him dead-
it'd be one of the other contestants.
Wait-you suspect Belfry or Grimes?
Would it have been difficult to get from one site to another?
Not with a million dollars on the line.
And Jim was never going to give up.
He was quiet, but stubborn at his core.
He would have been the last man standing.
Sorry for your loss.
A glitch in the satellite feed seems pretty convenient
if you ask me.
Well, someone may have interfered with it somehow.
Which means they knew about the addition of the live cameras.
Exactly.
Must have been connected to the show somehow.
I just interviewed Tuttle's wife.
She seems to suspect one of the other contestants.
Do you think it's possible one of them left their camp
and got to Tuttle?
I'm going to head out there right now.
Ask those very questions.
And I've got some cheese puffs for Sarah to analyze.
Well, she's interviewing some of the other contestants' spouses-
seeing if they have any other insights.
Look.
You be careful out there, you two.
Yeah, it might not have killed Tuttle.
But there's still a bear roaming around.
We've got each other's backs.
Right, Rex?
Yeah, you know.
Bye.
Not for you.
Not for you!
I hope you don't mind
that I invited Lucy over at the same time, Doctor Truong.
We've been really supporting each other through all this.
Even before Tuttle's death.
I understand your husbands have been in the wilderness
and out of contact for months now.
It must be stressful.
And now that the death has been deemed a homicide-
I had no doubt my Zack could fight off a bear.
He was literally hoping for a chance for a big game kill.
Lucy, please!
Janis, I know you and Perry are-
vegetarians.
Vegans, actually.
Regardless-
Zack was ready
to tackle anything to win this competition.
But now, with a murderer out there targeting contestants-
You think Tuttle was murdered because he was on the show?
Someone's jealous that our boys got further than they did.
Or it's a super fan gone haywire.
I mean, it does happen, right?
But we're not giving up.
Zack and I plan
on opening the hunting lodge we've always dreamed of
with this prize money.
Harry and I plan to spend ours teaching troubled youth
vegan bush craft techniques.
It's his dream.
The gear in that tree.
Is that the satellite camera
from the production?
Yeah, they just wanted
to leave it somewhere secure-
hoping to go live again.
Oh, I'm sure it will happen.
Neither man will give up-
even if it kills them.
Oh, God.
Hey hey hey, get back.
Get back!
Perry Grimes?
Uh-huh?
I hope Rex here didn't startle you.
I'm with the SJPD.
Oh, yeah.
You're here to look into Tuttle?
Yeah.
Yeah, production sent a note
and said that they want us
to film a tribute or something?
But I hope you know
that I'm not going anywhere
until they start shooting again and-
I win.
I've been forewarned.
But I do have some questions for you.
Have you seen anyone else out here in the last few days?
Um, yeah, it's been a blur.
Uh, I did hear some yelling
one morning coming from the east.
Yeah, um-
Tuttle's camp is to the east.
Oh.
Can you tell me anything else
about this, uh, yelling?
I couldn't really make out the words.
But, uh, the vibe was definitely negative.
I thought maybe just-
you know, Tuttle was losing it.
Did you ever try to reach his camp?
No, no no, no.
It's against the rules.
I'd get disqualified.
Besides, you know-
I barely have enough energy to forage these days.
Yeah, you do seem pretty, uh-
run down.
I'll be fine.
Mind over matter.
Spirit commanding the body.
You know who would have the strength
to reach Tuttle's camp, though, right?
Zack Belfry.
I mean, the man is built like an ox.
Protein has its benefits.
Oh, hey!
Thank you buddy!
Thank you!
Animals are the best, eh?
Yeah, that's why I stick to to nuts and berries.
What's up Rex?
Yeah.
That's a military plane.
It goes by every few days.
Bothers me too, buddy.
Hello!
Zack Belfry?
Hello!
What is it, Rex?
A foot trap.
Thanks for the tip.
Belfry!
SJPD!
Don't move!
Show me your badge.
What?
I'm sorry again about the attack and all.
You can't be too careful
with the murderer running loose out here.
You could always just leave.
Over my dead body.
There's no I in quit.
I'm not sure that's how that saying goes.
Rabbit jerky?
Snared and dried myself.
I got grouse, too, if you prefer that.
Think I'll pass.
Thanks.
You know, you seem
to be doing pretty well out here, Mr. Belfry.
I'm pretty good at the hunting and such.
Just waiting it out now.
Loneliness is the worst part.
I miss my missus.
Enough to take out another contestant?
You know, try to hurry things along?
I'm a man of honour.
So I'll pretend you didn't even ask such a thing.
You know, Grimes says that, uh-
he heard yelling coming from Tuttle's camp one morning.
You, uh-
know anything about that?
Can't say I do.
Never heard anything but the coyotes myself.
But, uh-
I'm surprised to hear that Grimes is still in the game.
Maybe the lack of protein is making that man confused-
mistaking his yips for yaps.
Do you mind?
Go ahead.
Fine animal.
He'd make a great guard dog
at the lodge we're going to buy with the prize money.
Rex already has a job.
He's, uh-
He's pretty good at that one, too.
Okay, well just keep me posted.
I'll get it logged in.
So what do we have so far?
I analyzed the cheese puffs we found
at the Fortitude base camp.
They were a match to the orange powder found on Tuttle's sleeve
and in his stomach contents.
But-
it's a very popular brand.
Grimes claims to have heard
someone at Tuttle's camp one morning.
It could be the person supplying him with the puffs.
Or hallucination.
Starvation can lead to psychotic incidents.
Any luck finding borax on Tuttle's shirt?
Trace amounts.
But the fur we found in the tree is definitely bear.
So I'm going to test it
for borax as well.
I have a question.
Do bears do laundry in the woods?
Well, Rex alerted for a reason.
I'm just trying to find what he's already smelled.
Yeah, but we're still no closer
to narrowing in on a single suspect.
The million dollars on the line and huge ratings.
Everyone has motive.
But no one has clear opportunity.
Yeah, the spouses were at home and ready to broadcast live
when the murder happened.
The crew and the other contestants, too.
I'm looking into the satellite glitch.
Nothing concrete.
But a signal blocker is looking more and more likely.
Could be a strong signal from an FM band or radar.
You'd need special skills for that.
And proximity.
The surviving contestants spouses
think the murderer could be a past contestant or a super fan.
Oh, maybe we should look into this.
I got Keith from production to send me any unused
Jim Tuttle footage that was shot but never aired.
And we found this.
Thank you, Keith.
What are you doing here?
This is my territory!
You don't belong here!
What are you doing, man?
Stop!
Who's that yelling at Tuttle?
Is that Harvey Phelps?
Yeah.
Who's Harvey Phelps?
He's a well-known hermit.
He's been living in the wilds of Newfoundland for decades.
Yeah, wildlife officers have run off
a number of his campsites over the years.
But he just moves and sets up again.
He refuses to be housed.
Do we have his location?
I should probably go speak with him.
Yeah, people are tracking him online.
I'll send you the coordinates.
He doesn't seem like the kind of man
who'd know how to jam a satellite signal.
Or even have access to the equipment.
He could have heard something.
Seen something.
And living out in the wild that long-
I mean-
who knows what he's capable of?
Who goes there?
Show yourself!
I don't need any do-gooders showing up here today.
SJPD, Mr. Phelps.
I just want to ask you a few questions.
Oh.
Cops.
Even better.
Okay.
Thanks for the drink.
We appreciate it after the hike in.
You must be pretty eager
to talk to me-
to track me down out here.
Let me guess.
You found my location online.
I wanted to talk to you about an encounter that you may have had
with a man named Tuttle.
Oh, the contestant guy?
He came to a bad end, I heard.
A radio with a hand crank.
Oh, I-
didn't think you'd have any technology out here.
Caved in a while back.
Caved to junk food, too.
Can I ask where you
where you got these-
Mr. Phelps?
Ah, call me Harvey.
I never met a mister I ever liked.
And I got it from this
producer lady named-
sounded like something from a soap opera.
Sloane Castle.
Yes, that's the one!
Why would Ms. Castle be giving you snacks?
Well-
I'm not proud of it.
But I went over to Tuttle's one day-
making a fuss-
knowing that they'd offer me some stuff
to cut it out.
So you weren't really angry with Tuttle
for intruding on your territory?
Oh, no, no, no, no.
Tuttle was a great guy.
We hung out a few times.
I shared some snacks with him.
The guy was hungry.
But he was desperate to win.
And we could both use the company.
You know.
Did Tuttle ever mention spotting a bear?
Mmm!
There's no bears around here.
There's no tracks, there's no scat.
There's no claw marks on trees.
Tuttle mentioned a lot of things.
But bears wasn't one of them.
So what did you talk about?
Ah, I don't know if I should say.
We're trying to find his murderer, Harvey.
Any information could be helpful.
Well-
the guy said
he thought his wife might be stepping out on him.
Blamed himself for spending so much time in the woods.
So then he decided to leave her for another three months?
Well, he didn't think he'd be that long.
And he figured, well, a million bucks might help win her back.
Hmm.
What are you doing out here, Miriam Tuttle?
Strange place to drive to in the middle of a workday.
Well, maybe she just likes the view.
Yeah, like this guy.
Or maybe not.
Come on, Rex.
You've got to admit.
This doesn't look good for you.
You have to believe me, Detective.
I love my husband, but he left me alone-
over and over again, to head off into the woods.
And then he doubled down
by entering the Fortitude competition.
He said it was for me.
For us, but-
there I was.
Alone again.
So how did you meet Sami?
He's a food delivery guy.
I just started ordering more and more.
Who wants to cook for one?
And then we just-
You have to believe me.
I would have ended things when Jim came home.
Sami's just a distraction.
I wish with all my heart none of this had ever happened.
I questioned Sami as well.
He said
he was working the day of Tuttle's murder.
Um, the delivery company backed him up.
Sent over his GPS records to confirm.
So is Harvey Phelps cleared?
The woodsman has no alibi, but I don't see much motive.
I mean, he admitted that the confrontation with Tuttle
was to squeeze the production company
into giving him more free food.
I mean, I wouldn't consider cheese puffs food, but-
Would you?
Mark-good.
I was hoping to find you and Rex here.
What have you got?
Well, it turns out-
maybe bears do do their laundry in the woods.
Sorry, what's that?
The bear fur we found on the tree tested positive for borax.
So Rex
was right-
as always.
But wouldn't borax make more sense on a polar bear?
Whiter whites, you know?
Maybe there's a better explanation
for borax being on bear fur?
Perhaps-
since Borax is also used in the taxidermy process.
Here you go.
Okay, so-
what is the takeaway from all this?
Someone stabbed Tuttle-
but then used
a taxidermy bear claw
to make it look like it was a mauling.
What about the bear prints on the ATV trail?
Was it used for that as well?
Yeah, and then the fur
would have ended up on the tree nearby.
That would explain the bear's low weight
and the fact that
neither Wildlife Control or Harvey had seen
any live bear action in the area.
So someone was trying to cover their tracks.
I mean, literally.
But who?
Jesse, can you bring up
the live feed of Lucy Belfry from the broadcast?
Yeah, I'm on it.
Let's see.
Okay, well there's taxidermied animals
in the background.
Access to the weapon and motive.
But this live stream has got to be a rock solid alibi.
Lucy's house is three hours away from Tuttle's site.
Working together with her husband maybe?
Smuggled the bear claws and the equipment in to him?
Yeah, let's see what Belfry has to say about that.
Take Rex to the site.
See if he can find signs of borax.
Will do.
Rex.
Joe.
I was looking at the satellite feed.
And one of the cameras at Belfry's site went down again.
Just like before Tuttle's murder.
Is that smoke, Rex?
Belfry!
Easy, easy.
Hold on.
Hold on, hold on.
Joe.
Mark.
You and Rex okay?
Yeah, but Belfry's in rough shape.
We need EMS and forensics out here right away.
Looks like another murder attempt.
Belfry is recovering
at the hospital?
Yeah, his wife is with him.
Says he was asleep
when the pine bough roof was suddenly smouldering.
Nearly asphyxiated him.
Well, it could have been the sparks from his fire.
Possible.
But his campfire was only smoking when Rex and I arrived.
Guys, hey.
So I have something.
Uniforms-they searched the Belfry house.
But none of the taxidermy there
match the bear prints left at the crime scene.
But-?
But-
a local taxidermy shop was broken into just about
a week ago.
They stole a stuffed bear?
Even better.
Bear claws.
And the culprit-
left behind a single glo, sized small, pleather.
Who would wear a fake leather glove to rob
a taxidermy shop?
A vegan, maybe?
Grimes?
The contestant
who was starving on mushrooms and berries?
Uh-no.
I was thinking his wife.
Grimes was struggling.
The million dollar prize was slipping away.
So the only way to win
was to take out her husband's competition.
First Tuttle, then Belfry?
Janis and Belfry's wife became close.
So Janis would have known about
the Belfry's taxidermy collection.
So-
if the staged bear attack failed to disguise the murder-
then all suspicion would fall on Lucy.
Wait wait, hold on.
But how did Janis
jam the satellite signal?
She was miles away during the murder.
Or was she?
Play the clip through.
Yeah.
Oh Perry, are you okay?
You look so weak.
I'm hanging in there.
No worries.
Is there any more footage
before Janis went live?
Uh, let me check.
What's up with Rex?
Yeah, he did that once before at Grimes's campsite.
Wait-hold on.
Is that a plane?
Grimes said
a military plane flew over regularly.
You know-
I can identify the plane based on the sound of the engine.
One second.
Okay, it's a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III
used to transport military.
Apparently, there is a training exercise on the island.
Find the flight path.
Lay it over top of the Fortitude map.
It's right over the campsites.
Now show me Janis's house.
That's nowhere near the backyard where she was shot live.
And there's no way the engine sound could travel that far.
No, there isn't-
because she wasn't in her backyard.
She had to be close enough to Tuttle's campsite
so she could jam the signal and murder him.
Jesse, is there any way to prove that this footage was altered?
With time.
But whoever did this has mad skills.
Do we have time?
Because if she's a killer, she's a definite flight risk.
I think I know a faster way.
Jesse.
Dig up Janis's past.
See how
she might have found out how to do all this.
And send me the schedule of that cargo plane to the second.
Where are you headed?
To talk to a reality TV producer.
I've got a pitch on How to Catch a Killer
live on television.
And you're sure you can pull this off?
Of course not.
It's live TV, but I'll do what I can.
No one messes with Fortitude Newfoundland.
Okay, people!
We're going live in three, two, one.
Tonight-
we're bringing you a very special edition of Fortitude.
You've already been watching our tribute
to Jim Tuttle.
But now, once again-
we're coming to you live!
Okay, get camera B
hot and ready.
Camera C in position.
Copy that.
Because-
following the tragic medical ejection
of Zack Belfry-
it's time to award our final contestant
one-
million-
dollars!
Get Janis in position.
But make sure she's hidden.
Joe.
Tell me you've got something solid on Janis.
Jesse found some info on Janis's past.
We're sending a photo your way.
Perry Grimes has no idea
that he's won.
Here he comes now-
thinking he's being pulled from the game.
Move in on Grimes.
No, no no, no, I'm fine, I'm fine, I'm fine!
I want to stay in the game!
You think Perry's in on it, too?
I doubt it, Mark.
I found a one-way ticket
to the Cayman Islands
booked under Janis's name.
First class.
Solo- and she ordered the steak.
Not very vegan.
Got it.
Must've been tough on you out there!
Yeah, man, I-you know-
I did my best.
I did it for my wife
and for the kids who we want to help.
Perry.
Yeah.
I have a surprise for you.
Look who's here!
Janis!
Are you-?
You won! -Oh my God!
You did it! -We won!
Okay, props.
Have the giant cheque
on standby.
We won?
We won?
Wait a minute.
That cop and the dog just walked into Janis's shot.
Just go with it-go!
Oh my God, yes!
Congratulations.
Yeah!
But, uh-
What are the-
What are the cops doing here?
Yeah, I hate to break it to you, Perry.
But Janis Grimes, you're under arrest
for the murder of Jim Tuttle
and the attempted murder of Zack Belfry.
What are you talking about?
What are they talking about?
This is insane!
Are we-?
Is this-are we still-?
Is this in the script?
Keep rolling!
Every camera, every angle!
Copy that.
We know about the taxidermy robbery.
We know about the Cayman Islands.
And now, we know about your time
in the US Army Reserve
before you moved
to Newfoundland.
She wasn't in the army.
She's a pacifist.
They got the wrong person.
Yeah, I don't think so, Perry.
Your wife is trained in the communications division.
Knows how to scramble satellite signals-
set up green screens to mask her true location.
Because you were not in your backyard
during the live broadcast.
You were out here murdering Tuttle.
Then you came back
to try and finish off Belfry
so you could take the money and run.
You killed a man?
And then you were going to leave me?
Huh?
What-?
What happened to living off the land, Jani?
You know, it's ironic, Janis-
because it was the military who gave you away-
thanks to Rex and his sensitive hearing.
Oh, look at that.
Looks like they are right on time again.
You want to wait for my tech team
to prove that your footage was altered?
Or you just want to confess now?
One camera on the dog, one on the cop!
One on Janis!
Rex!
Let's go!
Go go, go, keep rolling!
Go with it!
Are we rolling?
Can you get this?
Your guys could have helped stop her, you know.
No, this is ratings gold.
Good job, Rex.
Don't cut.
Wow.
You guys are going to be famous.
No thank you.
I'm just glad that Sloane went along with the ploy.
Otherwise-
Janis could have got wind we were on to her and fled.
No, we would have caught up with her eventually.
Also-
by closer examination-
it turns out that there was green screen bleed
on the edges of her image.
And we found
the stolen bear claws in a neighbour's garbage bin.
Exact match to the ones Rex tracked from Grimes's site.
Janis certainly is resourceful.
Hmm.
I wonder if she'll have the Fortitude
to live through her long prison sentence.
Please don't encourage him.
Meanwhile, Grimes is recovering in hospital.
Malnutrition, dehydration-
and a broken heart.
Janis said
she couldn't take their restricted lifestyle anymore.
Yeah, well, living rough isn't for everybody.
But there were other ways for her to leave her husband
and start a new life.
So I hear the show
is awarding both the surviving contestants
and Tuttle's widow
with a million dollars each?
That's the least they could do
for the ratings this grabbed for them.
They've been renewed for another
five seasons.
Asked if Rex and I wanted to be contestants on their next show.
Oooh!
Okay!
Rex, are you ready for your close-up?
Attaboy!
That's my boy.
