Professor, when did you see
your daughter for the last time?

That was in the year 1939.
When I came out of the concentration camp...

and we sent her to live with her grandparents
in Villefranche.

What was your first reaction...

when you found one thousand
autobiographical drawings?

We were deeply moved.

We were very moved to begin with...

Because it was the first time
we returned to the place...

where we lost Lotte.

The garden was kind of a escape for her.

She believed nothing could happen
to her in the garden.

In this basement, some of Charlotte's work
survived the war.

It was everything Charlotte
painted in the garden.

- Look, this is hers.
- How's that?

- That's hers.
- It is indeed. Beautiful.

Do you feel that Lotte's death
was perhaps predestined?

I mean, in another less horrible time,
would she also... have been doomed?

Absolutely not.

I'm sure she would have become
a very talented artist.

- Did she love life?
- Very much so.

And she rediscovered it
time and time again.

But these thousand gouaches
give the impression...

that she knew how little time
she had left. They seem hurried.

That's what makes it
so incredibly tragic.

You can see in them that
she looked death in the eye.
