for the last 10 years

to keep her going,
keep her mind off of things.

Oh, goodness.

I got aileen wuornos' letters

from the beginning
to the ending.

the mail people would say,

"wow, you get mail
from her all the time."

I said, "oh, I sure did."

I got a whole lot of mail.

Nobody normally would do that
with a serial killer,

but I loved her
'cause she was my friend.

Aileen: Dear dawn,
believe it, it's me,

even though this letter

is being written
on April fools' day.

I am quite amazed
you still care.

I'd love to tell you
what's going on.

Botkins:
When this picture was taken,
she was a very angry woman,

she's not the same girl

that I was raised with
when we were kids,

but...[ sighs ]

just --
I don't know what to say.

That's when she was arrested.

She was just pissed
she got busted.

She wrote about
all seven of the murders,

and she wrote about
the experiences with them,

you know, why she killed them
and stuff like that.

What really gets me is that
this actually happened,

that people died,

because all my life,
I asked god --

one of the biggest
things I would say to him --

that I pray I am never involved
in somebody's death.

she had nobody else
to tell it to.

"get it off your chest, aileen.

You're on death row,
for chrissakes."

as for what really went down,

the world will be surprised
to learn.

taylor: Back in the late '80s,
daytona beach,

it really was the vacation
destination of the world.

♪

but along with that,

there were times where people
would visit this location

that had not what we would call
"good intentions."

♪

♪

this is where it all started.

♪

back in 1989,
an abandoned car was found here.

♪

it's not uncommon whatsoever
for abandoned cars

to be found throughout
the state of florida.

But in this particular case,

this began florida's
worst nightmare.

♪

inside that vehicle
were the keys.

Bloodstains were found.

♪

a wallet was found.

Inside that wallet was
a driver's license

with the name
of richard mallory.

We checked
with local law enforcement

to see if his name has popped up
in any criminal investigation,

any cases where he could
possibly be a suspect

or a named victim,

so trying to identify
why he was here.

And then we found a body.

♪

dear dawn,
I never wanted to kill,

but satan had me
run into mallory.

♪

right now, we're at the location
just off of u.S. 1

where the remains of a body
was found

wrapped in some carpeting.

Pockets were turned inside out,

there were no personal
identifiers on the body.

The autopsy investigation
revealed, in fact,

that the victim
had been shot three times

with a small-caliber weapon,
the .22 caliber.

The body was in a moderate to
advanced state of decomposition.

but there was still
some skin tissue off the fingers

that were viable,

and a fingerprint
identification was made.

The remains were positively
identified as richard mallory.

♪

the investigation
from a missing person

now turned into a very active
homicide investigation.

♪

one of the things that we
learned about richard mallory

was that he pretty much
lived life in the fast lane.

♪

jarvis:
He'd go out, and he'd drink,

and he would visit
the strip clubs in tampa.

He would patronize prostitutes.

♪

dear dawn,
in my 5 1/2 years as a hooker

working basically every day

all over the highways
of florida state,

everybody I met,
I introduced myself as "lee."

♪

I weigh my sins on the male
domination of society.

They will threaten women,
girls, teens --

it don't matter --

and never think twice about
what they've done

as if females are not human,

just automatons for
their pleasures and commands.

jarvis:
With richard mallory's car,

we were able to determine

that there were several items
that had been taken --

a toolbox and a camera
and a radar detector.

One of the things
that I find unique

is that the driver's side seat

is moved in
the forward-most position.

Richard mallory was
approximately 5-foot-7.

He probably would not have had

that seat pulled
all the way forward.

Maybe the person that killed him
drove the car,

and that person
may be smaller, shorter.

Taylor: Numerous
leads were identified.

They were explored.

But unfortunately,
those leads evaporated,

and sadly, you know,
his case became a cold case.

one of the most amazing things
in aileen wuornos' letters

is she does
some great cartoons,

and it's usually when
she was having a bad time,

or mainly when I was
not feeling good.

She would write things
to cheer me up.

She just was a smart woman
that just never got to be seen.

But she gets in
a different frame of mind

when somebody
pushes her buttons.

Boy, she'll fight back
in a heartbeat.

she had a awful childhood
from the get-go.

It was horrible.

Aileen's parents was alcoholics,
and they fought a lot.

They did a lot of drugs
and stuff like that.

That's why the kids
were taken away from them.

They didn't feed them

because they were high
all the time or drunk

and using their money on that.

So the grandma said,

"unh-unh. I'm taking
those kids away from you."

aileen got angry.

I don't blame her.

I would too after so much.

Geez.

She had a lot to be angry about.

[ siren wails in distance ]

[ police radio chatter ]

jarvis: Six months after
richard mallory's death,

our patrol division
in marion county

came upon
an abandoned truck on I-75.

♪

it appeared
to the patrol officers

that it had been abandoned

because the truck
had a flat tire.

But when they ran

the vehicle identification
number,

they found that it belonged
to a missing person,

a man by the name
of david spears.

♪

taylor: Two weeks later,

the badly decomposed remains
of david spears

was located in the
chassahowitzka national forest

in citrus county, florida.

♪

dear dawn, there is one thing
about the victims

I forgot to mention to you.

♪

david spears --

I was with him from 1:00 p.M.
Until 9:00 at night.

♪

me and him were drinking
together all day,

so we learned something
of each other.

♪

taylor:
His remains were nude.

Numerous items were located
and identified as evidence --

condoms, condom wrappers.

A subsequent autopsy revealed

that david spears
had been shot multiple times,

specifically with
a small-caliber weapon, a .22.

Jarvis:
David spears was a tall man.

He stood about 6-foot-4.

The vehicle had
the driver's side seat

in the forward-most position.

I knew after his killing,
it was over for me,

so I decided
to just keep trucking,

doing what I have to do,
hustling to survive.

If more trash I run into,
oh, well.

♪

a few days later,
mr. Carskaddon's body

is located in a remote area
in pasco county, florida,

and he had been
shot nine times.

That indicated to us
extreme rage.

♪

at this point,
we have three bodies

in three different counties
across central florida.

Everybody is independently
working their own investigation,

but we weren't communicating
well enough

to tie them together.

We missed the fact that these
cases could be connected.

♪

if I have to do this,

it'll just keep others
from their cruelty in life,

and I know I'll die from it.

So to kill any more down
the road as I hook

will only be the same
as killing one.

botkins: When aileen
used to live in that house,

it was yellow.

It was a cute little yellow
house with white around it.

But that's where
aileen was raised.

She had the best time.

She loved that, being --
living there with her grandma.

♪

aileen's grandmother made sure
she went to the bright schools

and went to church,
had clothes,

and took every care
of her completely.

She loved her grandma more
than anything in the world.

♪

this is aileen wuornos
and her brother and her sister.

It's a beautiful picture
of them.

That's when she was happy.

♪

then it all changed.

♪

when she was 12 years old,

there's this one guy that would
let the kids come and get high.

♪

he was an older man,
and his wife had died.

He was, like, 50 or 60.

And they would all party
in his house,

and he would buy them beer
and stuff like that,

but the rest of them went home

because they had school
the next day.

Well, aileen didn't,
and she passed out,

and he raped her,
and she got pregnant.

♪

aileen: Dear dawn, boy,
that kid I had was huge.

I sure remember well the pain,
24 hours of labor.

The stretch marks from him
wrack my bod.

They're all over.

Wound up naming him
keith arnold wuornos

in honor of
my wonderful brother.

I loved him so.

Her baby was adopted right away.

She never got to see her child.

Then they let her
out of the hospital,

and that's when she had to
go home to grandpa and grandma.

It changed, I think,
everything with her.

She had so much anger
in her life.

Her anger is, like,
10 times the normal person's

when it does go off.

dear dawn, now I hitchhike
these roads of florida --

I-27, I-75, I-4, I-95,
u.S. 41, u.S. 1,

the only highway
from key largo to key west,

and catching a ride
wouldn't take forever.

Sometimes you couldn't tell

if it was a female, male,
or a kid driving.

I'd have to have
a pair of binoculars,

look through all the twigs
and everything

to pick out someone alone."

siems: That's a picture
of my uncle pete.

It's kind of fuzzy,
but that's him.

[ chuckles ]

my uncle pete
was a very kind man.

He was one of the kindest men
I ever met.

He'd do anything for anybody.

He told me he liked
to pick up hitchhikers.

He says, "I like to talk to them
about the lord, about god."

[ laughs ]

you have a captive audience,
I guess, you know, so I said,

"uncle pete, still,"
I says,

"it's just far too dangerous
to do that," you know?

And he looked at me and said,
"dave," he says,

"if I get taken out
or hurt or anything,"

he says, "at least
I'll be doing the lord's work."

I was sitting on my front porch
having a beer

when I heard a car
racing down the road.

♪

they came around that corner.

They lost control,

and they shot up into the woods
and hit a tree.

And these two women
come walking out.

I asked them
if they needed any help.

They were like, "no, no,
we don't need help,"

you know,
and the blond-headed woman,

you know,
was telling the other girl,

you know, "come on!
Come on! Let's go!"

it struck me as very odd.

The blond-headed woman,

I noticed she had blood running
down the sleeve of her arm,

and that was the last
I seen of them.

dear dawn, a house nearby
saw what happened,

and some of the people asked us
if we were all right.

I said, "yeah,
we live just down the road,"

so we scurried out of the car,

but I was losing a lot of blood

from my whole right arm
cut up and hand,

and I was already passing out.

Jarvis: When deputies arrived
on the scene

and saw this vehicle
that had been damaged,

and when it was run,
it came back to a missing person

by the name of peter siems
from jupiter, florida.

Peter siems had been reported
missing about a month earlier.

♪

woman: Peter siems of jupiter

vanished on his way
to arkansas.

Yesterday, officers found his
stolen car in orange springs.

Hopefully
we will find some new evidence,

possibly the body.

When you get the news,
your stomach just drops out.

It's just a terrible feeling.

It is just something you don't
want to wish on anybody.

Taylor: We had two eyewitnesses
that observed two females

walking away from
peter siems' crashed car.

The next thing we did is,

we utilized the services
of our forensic artist.

♪

smith: I received a call to
interview a couple of witnesses.

One of the challenges
of being a forensic artist

is to be able to lead
the witnesses

into a place
where they feel comfortable.

You recall from your memory
a lot better

when you're relaxed.

♪

♪

subtle changes
in those features,

as a forensic artist,

is what you have
to really concentrate on,

and that's where the drawing
starts to come to life.

My drawing with these two women,

when I turned
those sketches around,

I had that satisfaction
of their response of,

"that's them."

jarvis:
Peter siems had been reported
missing in June of 1990,

and now we had somebody
we may be able to identify

that we could tie in
to being in peter siems' car.

So we started going to the
local stores and gas stations,

but we just were not coming up
with anything at all

that would help us
to identify who they were.

At this point, we didn't release
the composites publicly

because all we had
was a missing person.

Unfortunately, at that point,

we didn't tie
the peter siems case

into the homicides.

aileen:
Dear dawn, the real aileen
never killed anyone.

I'm sure you know
just what I mean

since you've seen
the real aileen from years ago.

Something was wrong royal,

and something else
was controlling me."

reporter:
50-year-old troy burress
was found murdered

in florida's
ocala national forest.

Troy burress worked
for a florida sausage company

as a truck driver.

Tired of life on the road,

he had planned
on quitting his job.

Burress was found shot...

Woman: The people that did this
just cannot imagine the grief,

the hurt, the anguish,

that they have caused
this family.

This is a man
that I hugged for 50 years.

He was my best friend
and my buddy,

and I'll never see him
again.

jarvis:
Troy burress had been shot
with a .22 caliber weapon.

At that point,
we found that we had reports

of two other cases
in central florida

that had .22 caliber weapons
involved in the shootings.

♪

and we thought,

"could there be some type
of connection between them?"

so we got together
with the detectives

in these three
different agencies,

and we found that there were
a lot of commonalities.

All the men were driving alone
on the roadways.

Their vehicles had been taken.

The driver's seat pulled
to the forward-most position.

The tags had been ripped
off these vehicles.

Jarvis: Finally, the interior
compartments were wiped clean.

Taylor:
The term serial killer had not
even been mentioned yet,

but there was a high likelihood

that these cases
could be connected.

The clock really is ticking.

Who is out here
shooting these men?

Aileen: Dear dawn,

males are the very cause
of women in stress.

They gave me hatred,
so I gave it back,

and the master
behind the scenes

of all their evil inbred

was none other
than lucifer himself.

♪

I was easy prey
for lucifer's divine will.

♪

jarvis: On September 11th,
mr. Humphreys was working

for the division
of children's services,

and he made a number of checks
on different families that day.

When he didn't come back
to work that evening,

he was reported
as a missing person.

♪

the next day, there were two
young boys riding their bicycles

in a remote area
of southern marion county.

As these boys rode down

to the end
of a small cul-de-sac,

there was a dead body
behind a little cement culvert

at the end of this cul-de-sac.

Mr. Humphreys had been
shot multiple times.

A .22 was for shooting birds,

and one shot
would never do a thing,

and the assailant would still
be fighting with you,

even after five shots,
like humphreys.

The bullets
didn't even faze him

until the wounds
started to take an effect.

Jarvis:
We were looking into what
may have happened to him

between the time
that he last visited a home

and his body was found.

And we took that route.

We stopped at every place
he could have stopped at.

We got to the truck stop
on I-75 in wildwood

and found that he had stopped
in there for a soft drink.

It was at this point we figured,
"let's take a chance."

when were talking to the clerk

at the convenience store
at the truck stop,

we showed her
these two composites

on the off chance

that she might have seen
somebody in the store

that resembled them.

And she said she did.

She said they were
acting kind of giddy.

She felt pretty sure
that they were in there

between 4:00 and 4:30
in the afternoon,

which would have been
about the same time

that mr. Humphreys
had stopped there.

we had now that extra piece

to tie these composites in
to a potential victim here.

♪

then we had
our seventh victim --

walter jeno antonio.

At this point, we got together.

We said, "we feel we need
to go public."

reporter:
Seven men have been shot
to death in cold blood

on florida's highways.

For the first time
in u.S. Criminal history,

these killers
could be murdering

with a feminine touch.

The main suspects
are these two women.

They play damsels in distress

before becoming dames of death.

The media jumped
all over this case.

"we're looking for two females,
possible serial killers."

we were on edge.

"when is the next killing
going to occur?"

man: Seven men shot dead
across central florida.

Police say...

Aileen: Dear dawn,
I should have quit

after the first incident
in prostitution,

but due to a love
beyond words for tyria

and wanting to
keep her well secured

and not ever losing her,

I continued to hustle.

While so many times
I wish I never had met her,

yet I still love her to death."

botkins: This is tyria moore,
aileen wuornos' lesbian friend.

She looks pretty happy there.

I mean, I could see why aileen
would want to hang out with her

because she looks like
a happy person

that would just like to party.

She liked barbecued ribs
and things like that,

and would go to the bar with her
and hang out with her

and let her pay for everything,

and she was always
joking with her

and talking about her family.

Ty apparently really loved
her mom and dad.

They used to call home
and stuff like that.

Aileen was always very jealous
of that relationship.

Aileen: She's not a good-looker,
but, oh, did we party

and do most everything
together.

I still love her,
can't let her go.

She could shoot me,
and if I survived,

I would have had open arms
with lots of love to give.

I know for a fact ty and I

would have stayed together
for life

if this hadn't happened.

taylor:
One of the things that we did
was compile a list

of all of the property
that was known

to have been taken from these
victims and their vehicles.

You know, florida being
a very transient state,

there's pawn shops
literally on every corner.

You start looking
for these items.

That's just routine
investigative police work.

The investigation got lucky.

It was at a pawn shop

that property
belonging to richard mallory

was actually identified
and recovered.

whoever had pawned
the radar detector

and the camera,

when that transaction was made,

they were required to produce
a photo I.D.

With the name, address,
phone number, et cetera.

And it was like, "bingo!"

bells and whistles
start going off.

The name on the pawn ticket
was cammie marsh greene.

♪

who was cammie marsh greene?

My name is cammie marsh.

30 years ago,
my name was cammie greene.

This is me
when I was cammie greene.

I was working
at publix supermarket.

I'd been there for a few years.

I went out to lunch from work,
and when I came back,

I heard two men in a suit
was looking for me.

Come to find out,
it was the f.B.I. Asking me

when was the last time
I was in a pawn shop,

and I told them,

"it's been years since I've been
in a pawn shop. Why?"

the fbi told me they received
a lot of stolen merchandise

in a pawn shop
under my name.

And I said,
"well, it wasn't me."

I was --
I couldn't believe it.

Taylor:
You're looking for literally
anything and everything

that will give you
a little break.

Florida had just passed
a law

that required anyone engaging
in a pawn transaction,

they had to leave
behind their thumbprint

on the actual pawn ticket.

But we found that
the fingerprints

jarvis: Just didn't match
cammie marsh greene,

and she was eliminated
from the investigations.

The fingerprint that was
on the pawn ticket,

that was turned over

to the florida department
of law enforcement,

to a fingerprint examiner.

♪

ahern: Volusia county
sheriff's office

had a pawn ticket
with some items

that were from
the homicide of richard mallory.

They had contacted us
about running that fingerprint

through our fairly new database

to determine whether or not
it could be identified

with prints
that were in the system

for people that had been
previously arrested.

We had run that print
several times

and was not able to identify it
with anybody in the system,

so I told them we would go
through the file manually

and look at every
single fingerprint.

The best way for me to explain
how huge this task

was going to be

is if you think about megabucks.

When you buy a ticket
for megabucks,

do you really think that
you're going to win that ticket?

Do you think you're going
to get all those -- that money?

How many people
actually do that?

Well, that was kind of the task
that we were facing in this

because each of these cabinets

have thousands of prints
in them.

And I started at
the very first drawer.

One of my coworkers
was at the last drawer,

and then one
was in the middle,

and we were going to
work towards each other.

The way we do a master-file
search is,

we pull out
the first stack of cards,

and then we put them
on the counter,

and we look at the print
that we're looking for,

and then we flip through
each one of these one at a time,

and then what happened was,
after 15 minutes of doing this,

I came across a card
and took the print like this,

and then took my glass,

and it was one of those
feelings like,

"this cannot be happening.

This is impossible.

I think I just won megabucks."

you don't feel like you
can even breathe.

We flipped it over,
and on the back it said

that it was a white female,

about the same height
that they had said,

and the person had been arrested
for a weapons charge,

and I believe it was a .22.

We had a name of aileen wuornos
on that fingerprint card.

woman: Paranoia on the rise --

seven murders,
all white, middle-aged men,

victims of a serial killer.

Florida police are looking
for two women

that match these drawings
of suspects in the case.

Greene:
The f.B.I. Showed me a picture,

and I knew both
of these girls personally,

tyria moore on the left
and aileen wuornos on the right.

So I was thinking,

"when is the last time
I seen them?

You know, it's been years,"

and I was just, like,
blown away.

♪

this is where I used to live,

and aileen lived with me
for a few months.

Around back, I used to target
practice with her.

In those woods, we'd just
shoot through the woods here.

[ gunshots ]

tyria used to live here
with me,

and tyria would
babysit my kids.

She went out one night,
and that's when she met aileen.

She met her in a gay bar.

I was married at the time,

and aileen did not get along
with my husband.

aileen liked to be
in charge of everything,

and most guys like to be
in charge of everything,

and I remember one time,

we was going to sit down
at the table and eat,

and we told her she had
to sit at the table,

and she wanted to eat dinner
in her bedroom,

and she just exploded.

She said no guy was going
to tell her what to do.

You know, she actually said

she was going to kill
my husband at the time.

Tyria had to actually
pick her up

and push her in the bedroom
and told her to calm down.

There's no sense
in getting upset like that.

one day, I realized I didn't
have my driver's license on me,

and I'm like,
"oh, I lost it somewhere."

♪

and then I realize
five years later

that aileen had my license.

[ news theme plays ]

woman: The last time the two
female suspects were spotted...

Aileen: Dear dawn,
tyria and I both saw sketches

while watching
the 12 o'clock afternoon news.

Man:
Police are looking for two women

who match these suspects in --

ii told her,
"tyria, go call your parents

and get them to send you bus
or plane money for home.

She did, and her parents agreed
to send her a bus ticket.

We bought some beer,
went behind a laundromat,

started drinking,
talking about memories,

and now our relationship
ending probably forever.

Jarvis: We now had prints.
We had all the aliases,

and we now knew
who we were looking for,

but the problem was,
the prosecutor said,

"you don't have a case."

damore: We didn't have enough
at that time to charge her

with any of the homicides.

We had no physical evidence
at that moment connecting her.

Let's understand
the siems' homicide,

which we believe
is a homicide.

There was no mr. Siems.

There was no body.

Being in possession of
a missing person's vehicle

doesn't lead you up
into a homicide.

Taylor:
We had to have a confession,

and we were going to do
what it took, lawfully,

to acquire that confession.

Jarvis:
We decided that we would bring
several undercover officers in

from all different areas
in florida

and have them go
into the places

that we thought
maybe she would frequent.

taylor: Mike joyner has been
in law enforcement a lifetime.

They don't come any better
at playing the undercover role.

♪

if you wanted to identify
a person

that's a suspect
in seven murders,

you only have one guy to go to,
and that's mike joyner.

Joyner: My assignment was to see
if I could find aileen wuornos

because they had got information
that she was hanging around

in all the biker bars
around here.

When I first walked
into the bar, I saw her.

♪

she had a scar
over her left eye,

and I knew that was her.

I went and bellied up to the bar
to her,

started talking to her,

and I asked her
if she wanted a beer,

and she said "certainly."

♪

well, I had probably $500
in my pocket,

so I pulled it all out
and paid for it,

and she seen all that money.

My story was, I'm from georgia.

I got ripped off
for 70 kilos of coke,

and I was down here
to kill two people.

You know what she said?

"buy me another beer."

taylor: So now you have
an undercover operation

inside the last resort bar.

♪

investigators
in an unmarked vehicle

across the street

with surveillance equipment.

Joyner: Well, pull up,

and I'll give y'all
a fair moment to get in here.

You had mike joyner
that was wired for sound.

Well, we were capturing
all the conversations

between
he and aileen wuornos.

We were hoping that there
would be dialogue

where she would make

some incriminating comments
or admissions

about the murders
that we suspected her of.

mike had to keep her occupied.

He had to keep his eye on her.

We did not want to let her
out of our sight at that point.

My job was simple.

It was drink beer,
smoke cigarettes,

and keep her in my sight.

Was it stressful?

Sure it was.

Mike did not know
where the gun was,

where she kept it,
what access she had to it.

Taylor: Operations like this
can go south

in a beat of a heart.

Oh, I seen them.

♪

she was very distraught
because I kept asking her,

you know,
"what's wrong with you?

You're real jolly
and happy-go-lucky,

and then all of a sudden,
you get depressed."

and she was distraught because
her girlfriend had left her.

She just said that that was
the love of her life.

She'll never have anybody
that close to her again.

She was just a ugly,
fat-ass lesbian

that had a double-ugly
fat-ass girlfriend.

She had a bag and a pocketbook,
and that was one of the things

I wasn't gonna let
get out of my sight,

and I honestly thought
she had the gun in there.

And we danced and shoot pool.

She said, "let's go out tonight,
and you bring all your money,

and I'll show you
a good time."

that was the cue that I was
gonna be her next victim.

Joyner: Aileen wuornos telling
me to bring all my money

and take her out,

and she was gonna
show me a good time.

I said, "okay, I'm ready to go
if you are."

I said, "but one thing, aileen.

We've been in this bar
for a long time,"

and I said, "you stink.

You got to have a damn bath
before I go out with you."

I said, "I'll go get a motel
room, bring you the key.

You go clean up."

buy me a beer, paul.

Paul:
You got it, buddy.

Right past the pool,
just about a mile.

She took the key and picked up
the phone and called the motel.

Okay.

But we never made it
to the motel.

Oh, look.

Lee, you go
back up here...

Taylor:
Once she came outside,

you go to an acute level
of stress instantaneously.

Commonwealth.
That's commonwealth.

It goes this way

a serial killer on their hands,

the first female serial killer

was awful on her.

She just lost the one thing

That must have crushed her.
