foreign armies

and the Congolese armed forces
have been locked in a struggle

which has siphoned off most of
the country´s natural wealth.

And in the middle of this
are 53 million civilians

´most of whom have been
displaced and are outside´

´the reach of aid workers.´

While I was there,
one of the villages

I was stationed
by came under attack.

Bombs were going off
all around me.

And I set out to find
whatever survivors I could.

There weren´t many.

You´ve gone through losing
patients but this was different.

You cannot imagine this much
death all around you.

I found a boy
in one of the huts.

He´d been abandoned
by his family.

He couldn´t have been
more than three years old.

I didn´t know
how long he´d been there

´and I couldn´t imagine
why they´d left him.´

But then I saw

some sores around his lip
and a few lesions on his back.

And then it all made sense.

´He was bleeding terribly.´

I couldn´t save him but I wasn´t
gonna leave him to die there.

So I picked him up
and I held him in my arms

until he passed.

It wasn´t until
after he died

that I noticed
the gash on my arm.

It must have happened
during one of the explosions.

I don´t know what to say.
