jeweler and then like they got it back

like before game one but we're like we
need this back asap so young when she

passed away he was only 10 but he said
one of his earliest memories that he

remembers was that he was at one of his
super young games his mom was sitting

like in the outfield

and he hit a home run, and it literally,
like, almost hit his mom, and I guess

she was just jumping up and down, like,
freaking out, like, so happy.

Oh, that's going to make me want to cry,
but I feel like she was probably doing

that in heaven when he hit his current
slam.

Baseball is such a crazy game. You can
be like Aaron Judge. You're incredible

all year, but it's like impossible to be
good the whole time. You know, it's

like you get hot at a certain time and
you can't control when you're hot or

You left the door open in truly great
teams. When you give them an inch, they

have a chance to kick it down.

I think we're, like, the first team with
a 3 -0 lead to not win in Game 4 in

life since, like, 1973 or something like
that.

So, oh, my God, I wish we were on the
other side of that, but we still have

three more chances to get one more win,

you a lot about Aaron Judge and tonight.

It was crazy just the first inning.
Mookie had hit almost the exact same

that Rizzo had fielded and just made the
out himself.

So I think when Cole saw Mookie hit that
ball, he kind of just had deja vu and

was like, okay, that's the same ball
Rizzo's going to get to first.

As a first baseman, the ones that are
spinning, those are probably the hardest

plays. So I just played the hop
conservatively, and I looked up to flip

Garrett, and there was just a
miscommunication on both of our parts.

That's basically three errors in the
same inning.

The fundamentals on this team are just
so bad. That's terrible.

Gratterall, he's typically an efficient
pitcher.

I'm counting out and trying to figure
out how I keep this game as close as

possible. Guy they call Bazooka,

Can have his work cut out for him here.
Soto, Judge, and Chisholm coming up.

nobody out.

Ball four, and a go -ahead run is the
board.

Well, here comes Aaron Judd.

Fives of fives and low blows in this
game for him and for the Yankees.

The last inning, it was tough to
swallow, but definitely didn't feel like

were out of it.

We always knew we were one swing away.

That's always our mentality.

It's just about coming in and not
letting it affect you. You have to stay

focused on the next pitch.

That point in time, I was thinking, was
I going to be all in or not?

Because, you know, we were stretched
pretty thin with our staff.

But I just thought our guys did enough
to earn the right for me to exhaust

option to play to win that game that
night and not look towards a potential

game six.

Dave Roberts looks like going to make a
change here.

Blake Trinan's ready to come in as early
as he's been deployed in this

postseason.

We couldn't give up any more runs, so I
went to Trinan to stop that momentum.

It was earlier than I'd been called in,
so that aspect caught me off guard a

little bit, but I was like, okay, I've
got to go at least one plus.

Trinan's been their top guy in this
postseason.

Is Blake Trinan running out of gas,
though? He's given up a run in three

consecutive outings.

Trinan, fired.

Swing and a ground ball, right side,
luck.

Doubles it up, throw to first in time.

And that ends the sixth inning. So
Trinan comes out of the bullpen, strands

pair, but the Yankees score one and take
the lead back.

Six -five, Yankees on top. We go to the
eighth.

Tommy Canely will take over.

And Canely to face Quique Hernandez.

Rips a line drive, base hit to left
field.

He started the rally in the 5 -1 fifth.
He starts this eighth with a base hit.

The Dodgers have the tying run on base.

That's what I said. Get to the bullpen.
We got this game.

Now here's Tommy Edmond against Canely,
and he's batting from the right side.

Runs in that frame. Tommy Edmond broke
the back ground ball. He dives, grabs

but everybody's safe.

Hope he's able to smother it, but that
didn't mean much. Hernandez to second,

and Edmond on a broken bat roller has an
infield hit.

Smith all for three.

Inside, ball four, a four -pitch walk.

Load them up to Gavin Lux.

Jesus Christ, it's the bottom of the
lineup.

And here's Aaron Boone, and he's not
going to wait any longer. He's going to

to his number one guy in the bullpen.

Weaver, for the first time in his
career, is going to pitch three

days.

And he'll come into a bases -loaded
situation in a one -run game.

There's not going to be any nails left
to bite in the Bronx by the end of this

one.

lead the Yankees 7 -6.

But New York has exactly the part of the
order due off that they want.

I looked at Doc and I was like, hey,
I'll keep going. And he was like, all

right. My calf had, like, cramped up a
little bit on me that previous inning.

And I have our trainer, Greg.

I was like, Greg, you just got to loosen
me up. It's cramping. And I'm just

prepping myself. Like, Lord, we
scratched all the way back. Let me put

another zero for these guys.

One gone in the eighth, and Aaron Judge.

This crowd's so nervous.

You're really silent in here.

Judd's trying to bring him to life.

Captain at the plate.

One. Face it. Over third. Down the left
field line.

Extra bases for Judd.

thinking.

So Doc's walking out, gives me the
hands, kind of like pumping down, like

down, like we're going to talk.

I wanted to slow the game down, hit
pause, and just check in on Blake.

And he comes out, and he's like, how are
you feeling? I was like, I feel fine,

Doc. And he's like, can you give me one
more out? And I was like, absolutely.

Like, I want this guy.

Wanted to look him in the eye, put my
hands on him, see how he felt.

And he's like, okay, this is your last
guy.

And I was like, all right.

How about this call from Dave Roberts to
lead Blake Trinan in the game?

He is approaching 40 pitches.

The Yankees have the tying run on
second, the go -ahead run on first, one

the eighth inning, and the Yankees' most
clutch postseason hitter at the plate,

Giancarlo Stanton.

First pitch.

Lifted down the right field line.

He's under it.

He's got it.

Stands the second out.

Doc told me that if I looked in the
dugout, he was pulling me.

I'm looking at Blake. Blake doesn't look
at me.

You can't take me out after just one
pitch. Like, there's no way. You got to

leave me in for one more day.

I'm on the top step, watching his
demeanor, knowing what I told him. But

one pitch.

Stuff was still good. I look at Freddie
in the distance.

And I'm just staring at Doc. Doc looks
at me and I said, mm -mm. I just shook

head and I was like, let's die with
Blake on this mound. We have to.

Freddie's been in this game for a long
time.

I trust his feel, his heartbeat, his
gut, all that stuff.

I trusted in that particular moment
because I was wavering.

And I just decided to stand down.

And I said, this is his guy.

Well, here's Rizzo with runners at first
and second two out.

Late trotting, giving it all he's got.

He's on fumes right now.

The Dodgers are three outs away from the
World Championship.

It was probably the most special moment
of my career to have gone two and a

third and hopefully have bought
ourselves a clean inning for whoever was

to come in.

I don't know who Dave Roberts is going
to go to next. Man, he's running out of

arms quick.

And look who is warming up in the pen.

Walker Buehler now throwing.

We're getting on the bus to go to the
stadium, and Walker sits down behind me.

He's like, hey, I feel good. It's my
bullpen day.

I'm good to pitch if you need me.

And I was like, look, Walker, we are in
a really good place.

He's like, all right, if things get
wonky, I'll be ready. I'm like, okay.

So I let Doc and everybody know.

And I tell them to text Walker back, no
thank you, because he was our game seven

starter. He had just pitched two days
ago.

So then we're going through this game.

And the sixth inning rolls around. So
Walker, being a smart player, is looking

at who's available to him. He goes to
me. I'll be in the bullpen if you need

I don't think anyone really thought I
had a chance to get in that game, and I

messed around and said, I just came out
here to hang out with you guys.

But as that game keeps getting a little
weirder and weirder, and you're kind of

looking around doing the math in terms
of who's left and who is tired and who's

this and who's that by the eighth
inning.

trying in a Herculean spot in terms of
going two and a third, and there was no

one else left.

And it's like, all right, I think I've
got the ninth inning.

We have the lead, so I'm just thinking
we have to just go for it right now. And

if something happens and they tie it up,
I'll be prepared for the fallout for a

potential game seven walk that would
certainly be spent for the series.

When you're exhausting everything and
you're putting everything out there,

no margin for error, that's scary.

It comes down to this in game five.

Bottom of the ninth, Yankee State with
Dodgers seven, the Yankees fifth.

L .A. three outs from a world title.

When Walker came in, I was like, wait a
second, you're supposed to be starting.

Something if we need, like, this is, oh
man, we're going for it.

The Dodgers are turning to Walker
Bueller.

Out of the bullpen for the first time
since the end of June in 2018.

And it comes in a potential World Series
clincher.

I felt so weightless and I think that
adrenaline and kind of the feeling of

moment. You're just trying to get your
warm -up pitches going and never really

done it before.

So we'll see what happens.

Obviously, this is a very difficult
moment for us to get to this point.

You know, as I said to the guys, it
stings now, but this is going to sting

forever.

You know, I'm 51.

You know, I poured my life into chasing
that, and when you get that close, you

know, it's... I'm heartbroken. I'm
heartbroken.

I'm heartbroken for those guys that pour
so much into this.

The ending is cruel.

To make errors, you know, and we were
capitalizing on our mistakes.

That's how you win baseball games,
capitalizing on the other team's

You know, we came up short, and that's
just, it's brutal.

What do you take away from your first
World Series?

A lot of different things, to be honest.

Getting a chance to see Yankee Stadium
rocking and rolling like that the past

couple nights was pretty special.

You battle through so much throughout
the season. All for it to come to these

final games like this.

I think falling short in the World
Series will stick with me until I die,

probably.
