Once upon a time, there lived a king
who had an incredibly beautiful daughter.
She had blue eyes, blond hair,
and a beautiful body under her precious clothes.
Legend of her beauty spread throughout the world.
Soon, suitors started coming to ask her hand in marriage.
Princes, courageous and handsome,
but she didn't have eyes for any of them.
All day long, she would look up at the sun
with tears in her eyes.
Everybody thought the tears were because the sun was so bright,
but no one knew that it was because
she had a secret longing.
She had but one wish:
to meet the Sun, Lord of the Sky, and become his wife.
One morning she mounted her horse, which galloped like the wind,
and began her journey.
She crossed mountains and forests, through hills and by lakes,
until finally, before her eyes, appeared the sea.
Out in the middle of the sea,
there was an island and on it the Castle of the Sun.
She spoke to her horse, "What a pity you can't gallop over the water."
The horse replied,
"My brother, the horse of the sea,
he can carry you across to the island."
It whinnied to the waves and out came a beautiful sea horse.
She got on and like a gust of wind they galloped to the island.
But the castle stood empty, for the Sun toiling away in the sky.
Only late in the evening did the Lord of the Sky return home.
He saw the girl and instantly fell in love with her.
The next day, he took her with him up into the heavens.
He held her close in his arms.
But his rays were so fiery
that the girl burned and fell back down to the earth.
The Sun was inconsolable and transformed the girl
into a tiny skylark.
Into a beautiful tiny skylark.
Now, every spring she flies up to the sky
and falls back down.
She flies and flies up to the Sun
and falls back down again.
She tries over and over...
...and always falls again.
And every spring
she serenades Lord of the Sky
with songs of love
and longing
SUMMER
That's mine!
You'll pay for that.
I'll draw my own line!
You can't do that.
That Veronika's piece.
I don't know whose is whose anymore.
That's yours!
I'm taking this piece.
Watch it, my hand!
Stop mothering me!
- It's choking me. - You're freezing.
You're choking me.
Good night.
Thank you.
Have you been eating grapes?
My little magic dove.
Tonight, your little bum is gonna get thrashed.
Anishoara!
Hold on tight!
Here with the watermelons!
There's enough for everybody!
Take it easy!
- Who's the fastest? - Okay, go!
Let's go!
He who knows what longing is,
he who knows what longing is,
He knows when the moon rises
and how long the nights can be
He who knows not what longing is,
he who knows not what longing is,
send this man to me,
for my longing is far to great for me alone to bear.
For there is nobody on this earth,
for there is nobody on this earth,
for there is nobody on this earth,
who longs for no one.
AUTUMN
You lightly press the gas pedal.
After you speed up, use the clutch.
When you stop step on the clutch right away.
- Can you drive on your own? - Yes.
Step on the clutch.
Give it some gas, now.
- Ready to drive alone? - Yes!
Okay, then stop.
I'll turn on some music for you.
Drive careful!
Guten Tag!
Here, for you.
- You're welcome. - Oh, thank you.
Cheers! To a long life!
And let us not forget the past!
What's his name, actually?
Mr. Schmidt!
- To your health! - Cheers!
Why is he sitting so far from us?
Thank you for coming to Moldova.
Moldova...
Cheers!
Prost!
Aunt Nina.
Here's your cane. What would you do without it?
You can toss it on my grave.
On Ionitza's garden gate
sit two nestling doves.
On Ionitza's garden gate
sit two nestling doves.
The oldest one already wants to fly,
but the little one's wings are still too small.
I'd like some ice cream, please.
Ice cream.
Five ice creams.
Goodbye.
Good day.
What does this German want here anyway?
I'm going to show you some pictures.
These are sparrows.
House sparrows.
Dove.
Rock dove.
White stork.
White stork.
The bird that brings the babies!
- Hello. - Hello.
You are a bit late, but ok...
Where is the little one?
She's coming.
There's Carolina.
She looks like Ana-Maria.
Here, stand next to it.
Ana-Maria is taller.
Come on, let's go.
It's a bit thick.
Not the teeth.
Wait 15 minutes.
"Minutes."
Veronika, come out here, you have a visitor.
Carolina, come out.
- Good day. - Good day.
Here's a little present for you.
There you go.
Good day.
Come in.
Thank you.
And here comes my granddaughter.
- Hello. - Hello.
I brought you a present.
Thank you.
It's pretty.
Very pretty.
You are wonderful. Beautiful.
Guten Tag.
Here, have some nuts.
- Oh, hello! - Hello.
From Moldova. For the souls of our dead.
Nuts of the losers?
Mommy.
Wait! I want to go to Germany too!
WINTER
Is anybody here?
Thanks a bunch. Have a good one.
Now, time for the surprise.
Stop.
Don't faint.
- Dragosh, let's go. I'm cold. - You're cold?
Let's go this way.
Are you still cold?
Yes.
Take this.
What's with Vasili?
I don't know.
He's angry.
Pour us a glass.
Where's he going?
- What's that nutcase up to? - No idea.
Good evening.
Good evening.
- May we get warm? - Come over to the fire.
Aliona, a chair.
Have a seat.
Should we get introduced?
Okay.
- Denis. - Dragosh.
And the girl?
- Ana. - Anishoara.
Interesting name...
Oleg.
- Nice to meet you. - Aliona.
- Let's drink to this. - Good.
To our encounter.
The beach was cold.
We'd like to warm up. My motorbike is broken.
You rode a motorbike in this weather?
The weather isn't so bad.
She's never seen the sea.
That's why were here.
You've never seen the sea?
Did you like it?
Yes. It's beautiful.
- Not too cold? - Oh yes, a bit.
In summer it's much nicer.
What are you doing now?
Stay a couple of days. Get the bike fixed tomorrow, maybe.
Look at the sea, walk around.
A view of forever...
We'll see.
Try the pickled melon. It's very good.
We have to go.
Have a nice evening.
What's wrong with the bike?
I don't know. It's leaking oil. No idea what's the matter.
Oil pressure? Ignition?
The gearbox is new.
The pressure is fine.
We found your horse.
We have to take off the gas tank together.
I can't do that alone.
- Did you see this here? - Hold the pliers tight.
...the summer is hot,
and the climate is humid enough.
Wine grapes like both heat and humidity.
That makes the grapes sweet.
Yes, there are many varieties.
SPRING
Ana, are you still waiting for Dragosh?
He'll be here soon.
- Cleaning up, boys? - Yeah, a little.
You should have done it before Easter but, oh well...
Bravo, bravo. Cleaning is good.
That's life.
Springtime is coming
across the whole country.
Flowers bloom in the fields.
Children, let us go pick some.
Flowers bloom in the fields.
Children, let us go pick some.
The green grass grows higher,
and the skylark sings.
Children, we long to hear,
the skylark singing in the fields.
Veronika, get in.
Oh, won't Vasili give you a lift anymore?
Leave me be.
- Hello, Ana. - Hello.
You're giving us too much to drink. Do you want us to sleep here?
Why not?
You can sleep great on the green grass.
You can listen to the quiet and feel the fresh air.
- Let's go eat something. - We'd be glad to come back.
Here's the bread.
Oh finally.
Wait a moment!
You were singing with the other children.
Yes, that was you! Come and sit with us.
- She's not in a pleasant mood. - She's shy.
- Who is she? - My granddaughter.
- What's her name? - Anishoara.
- You only have the one? - Yes.
I've got seven grandchildren!
Mr. Petru, that was so nice today,
when at the pension where I'm staying,
a group of children just showed up...
An old Moldovan la la la
likes to drink a bit of wine, la la la.
That's what we do!
...if Petru pours enough for us!
Do you want to go for a walk with my hat?
With this hat, I'm sure to find a pretty girl.
Let me tell you something...
- Welcome to our party! - Try my hat!
Yours is nicer! Here, take it back.
I'll try this one on. Oh... How nice!
Look at me.
The only thing I'm missing is a white horse.
To your health, Sochirca! Cheers, Petru!
Look out teeth, look out gums, look out liver, here it comes!
Dance, groomsmen and bridesmaids! Hop and again hop!
Come Andrei, we have to go.
Dragosh!
Dragosh wait!
The cuckoo sings his whole life alone.
Oh mother! There is only one mother on this earth!
Now, the cuckoo sings forever,
but our mother we must bury some day.
Then we can only visit her grave...
How does the liquor taste?
I'll try some.
Happy Easter! Long live Petru!
With God's help.
- This is your nephew? - Yes.
No. Not my nephew, he's my cousin.
The moon shines brightly.
A moth flutters in the night.
Bitter is the leaf of a certain tree.
I'm on my way back to my village.
On Ionitza's fountain
sit two nestling doves.
One flies away,
the other stays behind
and weeps.
