The original Playboy Mansion

was in Chicago.

And that's where Hef held
all his legendary parties.

They could get a little wild.

[Holly]
And the Bunnies that worked
at the Playboy Club in Chicago

could live on the upper story.

[Beverly] Adie decided

that she wanted
to live in the mansion.

[Laurie] But the Playboy life

took its toll on Adie.

[telephone ringing]

Adrienne didn't show up
at work.

-[camera shutter clicks]
-She was found dead.

[Laurie] We agreed immediately

it was murder.

[Michele] The one person
that benefited from her death,

whether he wanted it or not,
was Hugh Hefner.

Hefner was the epitome

of the evil society.

[Beverly]
What was she involved in

that led to her demise?

[Laurie]
If she was trafficking drugs,

that's something that
could get somebody killed.

[Beverly] We realized
there's much more to this

than meets the eye.

[theme music playing]

[David] In September of '73,
a man called to report

that his girlfriend
was found unresponsive

on their bed
in their apartment.

[Michele]
When the detectives arrive
on the scene,

they locate a victim
who is lying
in her bed, face down.

She's got blood
on her clothing.

And there's also blood
coming out of her nose
and mouth.

[siren wailing]

The victim is transported
to a local hospital,

where she is pronounced dead
on arrival.

They don't know exactly
what caused her death,

but this is clearly
not someone who just died
in their sleep.

The victim's name
is Adrienne Pollack,

and she is a Playboy Bunny

at the Playboy Club
in Chicago.

[Holly]
The very first Playboy Club

was opened in Chicago in 1960

to provide
a themed environment

where customers could go

to enjoy the world of Playboy.

When people think
of Playboy and Hef,

they often think of LA.

But Playboy was actually
started in Chicago.

It's where Hef was from.

That's where
the original offices were.

It's where the first
Playboy Mansion was,

where the first Playboy Club
was opened.

So, it was really headquarters
for a long time.

And the Playboy Club
in Chicago was unique

because it was the one Hef
and his friends

would actually go to,
since it was in his home city.

It was kind of,
like, the test kitchen

for the Playboy clubs,

and it became very popular
in Chicago

for the high-society people.

These Bunnies became
so iconic.

It was such an exciting job
to have,

and not necessarily easy
to get.

What Playboy
was looking for in a Bunny,

was a beautiful,
personable girl

who felt approachable,
but not too approachable,

like Adrienne Pollack.

We never did
really call her "Adrienne."

We always called her "Adie."

[Beverly] We grew up
outside Chicago.

It was a newer, growing,
middle-class community
called Niles.

Growing up, we did
a lot of things together.

Both my parents
worked full-time,

so she would watch me
after school.

We would sit there
and watch the old movies.

And a lot of times,
they'd be romantic old movies.

Prior to high school,
she was, I would say,

more of
a homely-looking person.
[chuckles]

She went from having
the buck teeth
and having the braces

and, uh,
the brown curly hair,

to having blond hair,

and this beautiful smile
and green eyes.

And at that point,
she'd walk into a room,

and people would just
want to go towards her.

[Laurie] Adie always liked
to be around people.

She did not like
to be at home.

She liked having fun
and joking around.

[Beverly] She was fun.
She was very outgoing,
very free-spirited.

She just had a sparkle to her.

When she graduated
high school,

she started working
towards becoming
a dental hygienist.

But she wasn't making
enough money, and she wanted
a better quality of life.

And then she met somebody
that was going to be working

the Evel Knievel
motorcycle show.

And she got the job
as a promotional model.

When she was there, uh,
there was someone from Playboy

that approached her
and asked her if she wanted
to be a Bunny.

When you're working
for a company like Playboy,

it's only natural
to kind of have your eyes open
all the time

for somebody who might make
a great Bunny candidate.

[Angelyn] I worked
at The Chicago Club.

At the time,
Playboy was an excellent way

for young women
who were looking to find
their own independence.

[Beverly] I think
she had thought about it,

and then she decided
to go ahead

and apply for the job.

Because it seemed like,
at that time,

being a Playboy Bunny
was glamorous

and maybe a stepping stone
into something else.

And it was later on,
in the early summer of 1972,

where she was finally approved
as a Bunny.

There was definitely a cachet
that came with being
a Playboy Bunny,

especially in Chicago.

The Bunnies that worked there
would live on the upper story

of the original
Playboy Mansion in Chicago.

They called that
"the Bunny Hutch,"

and the girls
would kind of dorm
in those rooms.

It was not mandatory
for the Chicago Bunnies
to live at the mansion,

but if they wanted to,
there was that option.

[Beverly] Adie realized that
it was a long drive for her

to go from Niles to Chicago.

So, she had decided
that she wanted to live
in the mansion,

and then it would be cheaper
than getting an apartment
on her own over there.

[Holly]
The original Playboy Mansion
was where Hef held

all his legendary parties
in the '60s and early '70s.

[Angelyn] Life at the mansion

was always very exciting.

The parties were fun,

and they could get
a little wild.

[reporter]
When Hef throws a party,
the magazine comes to life.

His Chicago mansion
is a Peeping Tom's paradise.

Forty live-in Bunnies
are there to be enjoyed,

but only by the eye
of the beholder.

If you wanted to go
for a swim, there was
an indoor pool.

[reporter]
The underground swimming pool

is kidney-shaped
and filled with bikinis,

entertainment for the barflies
next door.

You would often see Hefner

in the living room, ballroom,
with his pipe in his mouth

and just being very casual.

Sometimes after work,

I would go there
just to chill out.

It was always fun.

[Beverly]
Living at the Playboy Mansion,
Adie had indicated

she met many famous
movie stars at the time.

Vic Damone, Warren Beatty.

She met a lot of comedians.

They always had a good time
when Don Rickles came to town.

Adie had the excitement
of meeting new people

and doing things.

She would also do traveling.

She went to different areas
like Hawaii,

Jamaica, Florida,
Las Vegas, California.

It was a different world
for her,

something that she
hadn't experienced before.

[Holly] Must have been
so exciting to be surrounded

by all these parties
all the time.

But that catches up
to you pretty quick.

[Beverly] Eventually,
she started to get bogged down
by the day-to-day grind.

I think part of it
was tiredness, traveling,

and dealing with people
that were not always so nice.

[Gera-Lind]
The Bunnies were like
the celebrities themselves.

The constant parties,
posing for pictures,

I imagine it got
very exhausting for them.

[Holly] It's just parties,
parties, parties all the time.

That can have a huge effect

on your mental health.

[Beverly] She had a lot
of people that would try
to take advantage of her.

Living in the dormitories
began to be hard.

People taking her things,

or interested in her.

[Laurie] Eventually,
life at the mansion

took its toll on Adie,

and she wanted to move out.

[Beverly]
Also at the same time,

she had rekindled
her relationship

with her ex-boyfriend, Jerry.

She had met Jerry

in high school
in their sophomore year,

and they were dating
through all of high school.

[Beverly] They were
like magnets.

They would have their fights,
they'd grow apart,

and then they would
get back together again.

My family initially was okay
with Jerry.

But then as time went on,

they saw that he was kind of
a bullying-type person.

He was aggressive,

and they really
didn't quite like him,

and were hoping that she
would meet somebody else.

But in spring of '73,

a year after moving
to the mansion,

again, that magnet
drawing each other
back to each other again.

She was committed to being
in a relationship with him.

[Gera-Lind] For the Bunnies
to live at the mansion,

there were a lot
of strict rules.

Number one.

Your boyfriends cannot come
to the mansion.

[Beverly] She wanted
to move out

into an apartment with Jerry.

My parents
were not ultra-thrilled,
but they realized that

they didn't have
any say in the matter.

They accepted the fact
that they were making
a fresh start.

But we really didn't see her
all that much

for the next few months.

Then, she did a surprise visit
on her birthday.

It was her 23rd birthday,

and it was late at night.

My parents were already
in their pajamas
and I was outside.

And she had come to the door,
and it was her and Jerry.

And we hadn't seen Jerry
for a long time,

and he looked
quite a bit different.

His eyes, to me,
looked really unusual.

They didn't focus.

And, to me, he was dressed
kind of unusual.

My sister was wearing
this blond wig.

She had this...
these red satin pants on,

this sparkly tank top
and... and high platforms.

Even though our parents
were in their pajamas...

[chuckles]
...we took pictures together.

[camera shutter clicks]

[camera shutter clicks]

But when I hugged her,
I know I felt this boniness.

It was no more like this...
uh, just a lean girl.

She was really bony.

She had lost
an enormous amount of weight.

But she said she was happy.

She had indicated
that Jerry and her

were getting an apartment
beginning of September.

It was near Playboy.

So, she had a way of getting
to Playboy quickly for work.

She was excited.

They were getting
their furniture,
get their place set up.

And she goes, "I'm gonna
have you over, Bevy.

I'm gonna
have you over... overnight,

and then we could spend
some time together."

And I thought,
"Wow, that's exciting."

But that never happened.

[Laurie] One morning
in September,

my son was going
to be born at any time,

and we still couldn't pick out
a name.

So, I remember we were
in bed laughing,

picking out these horrible,
stupid names for a baby,

and... the phone rang.

[telephone ringing]

And my husband went
to answer it,

and all I could hear was,

"Oh, no. Are you sure?

Do you know how it happened?"

And then he came back

in the bedroom and told me,

and all I
could remember was...

[sniffles]

Sorry. This is the hard part.
[voice shaking] Um...
[sniffles]

That, um...

she was dead.

They didn't know
when she died.

They didn't have
much information,

but they indicated
she was found dead
in their apartment...

by Jerry.

I was just in shock.

I mean, we were all in shock.
We couldn't believe it.

We had all kinds
of questions and...

and I just remember,
just, feeling crumbled inside.

I just...
like, couldn't believe

that I lost my sister.

I mean, it's, like...

That's so traumatic.

I was 18 and she's 23.
How could that happen?

And my parents,

I mean, I can only imagine
how they feel.

Their child is gone.

[Michele] So,
the crime scene investigators
are on the scene

-at Adrienne
and Jerry's apartment.
-[camera shutter clicks]

Adrienne's lying face down.

She's got blood
on her clothing.

And there's also blood
coming out of her nose
and mouth.

They don't know exactly
what caused her death
at this point.

Because of the fact that
this is a young 23-year-old,
seemingly healthy female,

you process the crime scene

and treat it
the same way you would

if you knew it was a homicide.

So, the apartment
is sealed off

until further investigation
will take place.

[camera shutter clicks]

[David]
And from the very beginning,
her boyfriend,

Jerry, would have been
the number-one suspect.

So, the detectives
interview Jerry.

[David] He was,

as I recall,
was kind of squirrelly

in the, uh, interrogation.

And he explains that he
and Adrienne went to a concert
the night before.

And at the concert,
she complained
of a really bad headache.

So, they came home,
and she took

a couple of Excedrin
and went upstairs
to sleep by herself.

[Michele] There's no mention
of any further contact

with Adrienne
after she went to bed.

So, the next morning,
Jerry says

he went and got some coffee
and donuts,

and he actually came back
to the apartment,

and he assumed
that Adrienne left
for the day.

[telephone ringing]

But at 6:00 p.m.,

Jerry actually got
a phone call

from one of the Bunny Mothers,

who was wondering
why Adrienne didn't show up
at work that day.

And that is when Jerry says
he located Adrienne lying
in her bed, unresponsive.

Uh, there's a lot of problems
with Jerry's statement.

The fact that her boyfriend
is sitting downstairs

while she's upstairs,

probably deceased,
and doesn't go
to check on her.

He doesn't really make
any mention of it.

Was there an argument
or a fight that led to them
not sleeping together?

Or perhaps was he
just giving her some space

because she didn't feel good?

Or did something else happen
that night?

[David]
He had credibility issues.

And that would have
also contributed to their,

shall we say, suspicions

about what
the actual circumstances were.

[Beverly] The police told us
that it was 18 hours

from the time that she
apparently went upstairs

to sleep after the concert,

to the time
that he found her dead.

We couldn't understand,

in those 18 hours,
that he wouldn't have had

some contact with her.

[David] That would have been
the first questions
officers would have asked.

"When's the last time
you saw her?

And you're living
in the same apartment with her

and you haven't seen her
since the previous evening."

And that doesn't make
any sense.

So, they would
pretty quickly speak
to the family

and get more information
about Jerry,

and about the interaction
between Jerry and Adrienne.

[Beverly] I told them
I did fear Jerry,

and I couldn't understand

why she would go back to him.

He was very, very aggressive,
not just verbally.

He did beat her up at times.

[Laurie] What infuriated me,

was that my parents knew this.

But they never reported this.

They never went to the police.

They never did anything
to prevent Jerry from visiting

because they didn't want
to cause trouble.

[Beverly] I do feel maybe
something happened.

Maybe they got
into an argument
when they got home

from the concert.

Maybe there was something more
that happened.

There was no sign of her being
beaten or physical abuse,

even though I recall
there was some blood
at the scene on the bed.

But we needed to do an autopsy

to get to the bottom
of cause of death.

[Beverly]
When Adie's service was held,

Jerry did come.

He was not excluded from it.

And he was crying.

He said,
"Your mother keeps telling me,

'I know you murdered her.
I know you murdered her.'"

The next thing we knew is,

he was throwing himself
over the casket, crying.

I mean, they... they...
It took two men
to pull him off the casket.

[Beverly] We were grieving.

There were people
that she went
to high school with,

relatives, Bunnies,
that brought roses there.

Hefner called the funeral home

and gave Jerry
his condolences.

But he didn't talk
to my parents.

Hef definitely
would have been saddened
by the death of Adrienne.

But Playboy, as always,
tried to distance themselves

from any scandal
as best they could.

So, it was never really
commented on.

[Beverly] There was
also another gentleman there,
by the name of Fred.

He said that he knew Adie,

and wanted to come
and meet us.

He was a tall,
pale-looking gentleman,

cordial, but...

saying really bizarre things
to us.

He said,
"I was one of the ones
that found her dead.

And I was with Jerry,
and I was in the apartment."

My parents
and I had no knowledge

that anybody else was
at the apartment

at the time
of her being found dead.

We thought it was just Jerry.

And then he indicated
that he knew...

the real reason she died.

[Beverly] The whole thing
with Fred was just a...

a very big surprise to us.

We found out he was a man
that visited Playboy often.

He befriended a lot
of the Bunnies there,
especially my sister.

And he wanted to see
the apartment

because Adie had said
it was really cool.

So, the day
she was found dead,

Fred showed up at the door.

[David] And that's around
when Jerry had gone upstairs

and discovered her
as being unresponsive.

Fred was saying
a lot of strange things

to my parents and my sister.

[Beverly] He indicated
that Adie did not die
of natural causes,

that Adie's death
was planned weeks before.

He was concerned
about the fact
that he knew all this stuff,

and was fearing for his life.

He said that he was
going to meet with my mom

at a later date
and discuss it with her.

[Laurie] I don't know
if he wanted to be

a big deal,
or did he really
know something?

[Beverly]
And then Jerry came in
and he said he knew Fred.

He was saying that Fred
was an unusual character,

that... that the girls
were afraid of him,

and that they really
didn't like him.

But he just
kind of hung around.

And he was at the apartment.

[David] Fred was questioned,
of course, immediately.

And had a lot of wild theories

and hypothetical situations
and scenarios.

[Michele] He said that he was
an expert of chemicals,

and said he believed
that someone threw acid
on Adrienne's face.

[David] If you have acid
in your face,

trust me, you are going to see
the results on one's face.

And there was
no indication of that.

Fred also said
that she had been drinking
at the concert.

[Beverly]
But Fred was nowhere near them

during the concert.

He didn't know
what she was doing.

So, why would he even say
that she was drinking heavily?

[David] Basically, Fred said
a lot of things at the time,

but had no credibility.

[Michele] When the autopsy
was completed,

there was no alcohol detected.

It also did not show
any signs of strangulation

or suffocation.

And there were no signs
of violence,

blunt force trauma
or bruising.

She had pulmonary edema,
and that's just fluid
that collects in the lungs.

And a lot of times
this fluid has blood in it.

And that would
probably account for the blood

that was coming out
of her nose and mouth,

and the blood that was seen
on the side of the bed.

And it's a typical,

if not common thing,
that occurs when you overdose.

The toxicology report
basically indicated

she died from an overdose
of Quaaludes.

[Holly] A Quaalude is a pill

that will make you
very relaxed to the point

where it's very easy
to take advantage of someone,

because they basically
don't have the inhibitions
they would usually have.

Quaaludes were a common theme

with Hef
and the Playboy Mansion
from the '70s on.

I know he told me
that he liked them
because, you know,

it made it easier
to get a woman in bed.

[Michele] In the 1970s,
Quaaludes were
basically party drugs.

And they actually called them
"the leg spreaders."

[Laurie]
My parents didn't know
my sister did drugs.

So, them listening
to somebody saying she died
of Quaaludes

and they're already confused

about all of this.

We weren't sure
how she got access
to the Quaaludes,

how she took them.

[David] Law enforcement
never really had drug units
prior to the '70s.

They said,
"Jerry is more to blame,"

that it was his lifestyle,

from all indications,
that introduced Adrienne
to the drugs.

But this is, again,
in the early '70s.

You've got to understand

that a homicide detective
in Chicago, at that time,

is absolutely swamped
with cases.

And unless he's got something
to really grab onto

and can solve
a situation quickly,

he has to move on
to his next file.

And when he had
a drug overdose possibility,

they closed the homicide

or potential homicide aspect
of the file,

and classified it
as a drug overdose.

[Laurie] At the time,
that had to be accepted.

Case closed.

And my mother was angry

because she wanted
to see Jerry paying for this.

[Michele] Unfortunately,
this is a common occurrence.

We often have people
who die from overdoses,

and there are people

that may be responsible
for their death,

but they're never charged.

Finally,
after the investigation
was over,

we were able to get
into her apartment

and get all her clothing.

[Beverly]
After going through her items,

we found different things
that were...

were suggestive
of the fact that Adie
was more involved in...

in drugs
than what we had thought.

[David]
And that convinced them

that now, they have
to ask more questions.

We contacted Jerry
because some of the things
that we got were probably his.

When he came,
he started to reveal
some of the information

that we... we didn't have
about Adrienne.

He said that Adie was afraid
and wanted a gun.

And we found wigs
in her belongings,

and he says, "Yeah,
she would wear those

as a disguise."
And we were like,
"A... A disguise? Why?"

And then Jerry dropped
a bomb on us.

[Beverly]
Jerry said that the reason
why Adie did get the wigs

and she wanted the gun,

was the fact
that she was trafficking drugs

through the Playboy Club.

[David] Jerry outlined
a scenario

where she was basically
a drug mule for Hefner.

[Beverly] We didn't want
to believe him,

but when we thought about it,

the pieces of the puzzle
were coming together.

She did fly
on the Playboy jet a lot.

[Beverly] And we're thinking,
"Is that why she was traveling
to Hawaii, Jamaica,

all these places
that she normally
couldn't afford?"

Then in her apartment,

we found letters
that were from a Bunny

in England, um,
asking her to send ludes,

that she needed ludes.

No one's gonna make mention
of Quaaludes in a letter
and ask to send them some

if they didn't have
prior knowledge

that this person
can get it for them.

[Beverly] There was
a cartoon talking
about Quaaludes

talking about the individuals
that were at Playboy,

including Jerry,
that were depicted
in this cartoon picture,

saying that, like,
Adie was the head

of this... process.

We were questioning,
"Well, maybe this is true.
Maybe Jerry's right."

We don't know
his involvement but,

apparently, there was
something more there
than just a simple overdose.

[Laurie]
If she was trafficking drugs,

that's something that
could get somebody killed.

I have heard a story
from one of Hef's girlfriends

from the '70s,
Sondra Theodore. She said

that she was sent out
to go pick up cocaine for Hef.

And she was like,
his 19-year-old girlfriend.

So, I don't disbelieve it.

[Beverly] After that,
my mom decided to talk
to the investigators

to explain
what Jerry had told her.

And they said,
"Well, it's just
a simple overdose."

And she's like "No,
there's much more to this
than meets the eye."

But it went nowhere.

So, my mom decided
to take things
into her own hand,

and she was very persistent
about trying to figure out

what really happened.

[Michele]
She's contacting anyone
that will hear her,

because she wants
to get to the bottom

of her daughter's death.

[Beverly] She tried
to contact Fred again,

and he was basically gone.

He... He would not
return calls,

and he would not
return letters
or anything like that.

But she didn't know
of a senator

who previously lived
down the street
from us in Chicago,

and contacted his office
and talked to him,

and explained to him
about what that happened,

and he agreed
to send information

to the Cook County
State's Attorney,

Bernard Carey,
to look into this.

[David] Well,
the state's attorney's office

is a political office
in a lot of ways. So,

if a higher-ranking official,

uh, or politician
is asking you to look
at a specific case,

the answer, of course, is,
"We'll look into it."

[Michele] In the '70s,
drug use was rampant.

Many people died
from drug overdoses.
And I think

the government wanted
to stop it.

And the way of doing that
was to do the war on drugs.

We must wage,
what I have called,
"total war"

against public enemy
number one
in the United States,

the problem
with dangerous drugs.

[David] The war on drugs

is really a number-one subject
for, uh,

a lot
of the political campaigns.

[Michele] They want
to get a conviction,
and when you get a conviction,

what happens
to your political aspirations?

They get more realized.

And I think
that Hugh Hefner basically had
an X on his back.

[David] Hefner was sex,
drugs, rock and roll,

and he was the epitome
of the evil society

by the Conservative
politicians.

So, if drug trafficking
was proven as linked
to Hefner,

it would have
taken down Hefner

and all
of Playboy Enterprises.

And that was the goal
of law enforcement.

[Holly] When I moved
into the mansion,

Hef always tried
to present himself

as being very anti-drug.

And I kind of came
into the situation

thinking that was the case.
And on our very first
night out,

he offers me a Quaalude.

So, I think that was
kind of all a facade.

[David] The assumption
that law enforcement took,

looking at Playboy was,

"We know there's got
to be drugs there.

We just got to figure out
how to make a case."

[telephone rings]

[Beverly] And that's
when the investigators,
uh, re-contacted my mom

and said that they were going
to look into Adrienne's death.

[David]
I was personally involved
as the investigator

for the state's
attorney's office.

And they said,
"Go over the case again."

But in the bigger picture,

I wanted us to look
at the whole Hefner world

and the Playboy Enterprises,

and find out if they
were trafficking drugs.

[Beverly] We realized
that Adie was a smaller part

of this particular
investigation,

but an important part
in understanding

what Hefner was involved with
at the time.

[David] We ran
an undercover operation.

We went to the Playboy Club
in Chicago and tried
to solicit sources to see

if there was drugs running
in the clubs.

But we had real problems
breaking through
with the Bunnies.

The staff wouldn't talk to us,

and everybody
would just deny anything.

We needed one witness.

If one Bunny had come forward,

one staff member
had come forward,

we could have had something.

But we just couldn't get it.

Hefner took care of everybody.

He was hiding witnesses,

protecting witnesses
and luring them all up.

[Michele] Then,
things got really interesting

in March of 1974.

[Gera-Lind]
As the state's attorney office
was investigating,

they learned
that Bobbie Arnstein,

the top secretary
of Hugh Hefner,

was arrested outside
the Playboy Mansion,
with cocaine.

She was arrested by the Feds.

Not by us, the locals,
but by the Feds.

The Feds were already looking
at the drug involvement.

So, we were looking
at it simultaneously.

Bobbie was charged
with conspiracy
to distribute cocaine.

Bobbie Arnstein was one
of Hef's social secretaries

back in the '60s
and early '70s.

[Michele]
She was his girl Friday.
She did everything for him.

She was basically probably
his closest confidant.

[David] Potentially,
Bobbie Arnstein was
the missing link.

She had the knowledge.

If they get Bobbie Arnstein
to talk,

they could get Hefner.

[Holly]
Police thought Bobbie Arnstein

might be a weak link

that they could exploit
to bring Playboy down.

[Michele] She figures,
because she is
a first-time offender,

she'll be able
to probably avoid
any jail time

and get probation.

So, Bobbie refuses to talk.

But Bobbie
is actually convicted

and sentenced
to the maximum in prison,
which is 15 years.

The Cook County
State's Attorney's Office
then decided

to open
a grand jury investigation

into Hugh Hefner,

and also the death
of Adrienne.

Ideally,
in the best case scenario
for the Feds

would be for Bobbie
to cooperate

with the investigation,
and give information about Hef

and about
the narcotics distribution

inside the Playboy Mansion.

That would, in turn,

lower her sentence,
or at least give her
the possibility

of not spending 15 years
in prison.

They figured
that would be their leverage
against Bobbie Arnstein.

I'm sure Hef was very worried
about what Bobbie might say.

Bobbie was so close to him.

Bobbie would have
known everything he was doing,

everything that was going on
in the mansion.

And there's
so much pressure on her
that anybody could crack.

I mean,
he must have been petrified.

[David] The Feds were trying
to just squeeze her

in every possible way
they could to try
and get her to testify.

In fact, they said,
"Well, we've heard rumors

that there may be
a hit on your life."

They said,
"If you don't testify
against Hefner,

uh, we can't protect you.

Uh, things could get dangerous
for you."

[Michele]
The pressure was the highest
at this point for Bobbie.

[siren blaring distantly]

And then...

January, 1975,

Bobbie Arnstein is found dead

inside the Maryland Hotel
in Chicago.

[Beverly] She died
from a drug overdose.

Police suspected suicide,

but it was the day before
she was supposed to go
to the grand jury.

[Laurie]
I had turned on the news,

and said she was dead.

And I immediately called
my sister.

I think we were both
a little surprised,

a little shocked.

But we agreed immediately.

It was murder.

[Beverly] We never felt
it was suicide.

I... I feel like it was
so coincidental.

[Michele] There was
definitely conspiracies
about Bobbie being taken out.

And if you look at it,

the one person that benefited
from her death,

whether he wanted it or not,
was Hugh Hefner.

[Laurie] Names were
going to come out.

Trafficking was
going to come out.

I just think he was
going to be destroyed.

I think that Bobbie
knew enough all these years

that she could take him down.

[David] There's a lot
of rumors that she was killed

to prevent her
from testifying.

There was no information
that we ever learned

that there was a hit out
on Bobbie Arnstein's life.

It was just a bluff.

Bobbie committed suicide,

and I'm absolutely sure that
that's what it was.

When she was found,
there was a suicide note
she had left.

And in her suicide letter,

she never, ever said anything
to implicate Hefner.

Right to the very, very end.

Did she know
about Hefner's drug use?
Of course she did.

Of course she did.

But she was loyal
to the death.

Hefner bought time

on all the major
television stations in Chicago

after Bobbie died.

And gave
a very emotional speech,

blaming the government,

saying they did this,
they killed her, basically.

An already
emotionally-troubled woman...

was pushed beyond endurance.

And she killed herself.

[Holly]
When Bobbie passed away,

that must have been
incredibly devastating
to Hef, and scary.

I know it was

a big regret in his life.

But he probably wouldn't admit
he felt responsible for,

even in a remote way,

but probably did.

[Gera-Lind]
With Bobbie Arnstein's death,
the Hugh Hefner investigation

almost seemed
to have vanished,

as well as the investigation

into Adrienne Pollack's death.

[David] And I think
a big part of it
was the media blitz

that occurred
after Bobbie's death,

and Hefner's appearance

on all
the television stations.

And all of a sudden,
he was somewhat
of a sympathetic character.

So now,
the publicity was going

against the government
at that point.

And the most difficult part
of that, quite honestly,

was going with my partner...

back to
Adrienne Pollack's house,

and talking to her family,

and saying, "I'm sorry
we couldn't give you closure
on this."

[Beverly] It was just,
like, over with.

It was done. That was it.

[Laurie]
It's devastating to know

every one of these people
got away with it all.

Nobody paid.

But my sister and...
and Bobbie, really,

they paid with their life.

I think of Adrienne's family
and how tragic it is

that they probably
will never get answers.

It must be so hurtful
to have a loved one

just brushed off
as an accidental overdose,

when you're so sure
there's something else
going on.

[Beverly] My mom wrote
to so many individuals
over the years.

She wrote to whoever she could

to try to find answers
or to open this up.

And she did write
to Hugh Hefner.

And I do have
a copy of the letter,

and I'd like to read it.

[reading] "The truth
will be made known,
and perhaps not in our time.

But someone
will be inquisitive.

And a great movie will be made

with Playboy
as the background,

with the glitter,
the dazzle, disillusion,

heart-break story

that a sensitive director
shall bring to the screen.

I do not believe
Adrienne died in vain.

God chose this time
to shake up

many young women
who had dreams of grandeur,

only to result in tragedy."

Lisa Kaehl went from
an unknown waitress

to a Playboy sensation
overnight.

I never thought my safety
could be at risk.

I saw blood everywhere.

How could someone look at her
and do this?
