[Josh] The Rock of Gibraltar is a hulking European mountain

that hides a secret city inside.

[Phil] Just keeps going.

As soon as you enter, you know you're not alone.

- [loud clatter] - [Heather gasps]

Oh, my god.

[Josh] For centuries, nations have battled

to control it.

[Heather] This is where hundreds of people were hanged

in this exact spot.

[woman's voice] Let me out!

It was a place of suffering.

[Josh] Today, it's said to be haunted by those who died

in its labyrinth of tunnels.

Ooh [bleep]! It's going off like crazy.

Lights.

[Josh] Now, Heather and Phil will wage their own war.

[Heather] Oh, my god.

[Josh] As they dig deep...

Looks like it opens up up here, Heather.

...into the horrors of the Rock.

Are you the executioner?

Ooh, I love this. This is great.

But no, I'm talking about the Rock of Gibraltar.

That's the place that's in Spain, but it's British.

That's the one. Very confusing, I know.

It is a British territory surrounded by Spain.

It is known as the gateway to the Mediterranean,

and it has been a center of trade for millennia.

But recently, there has been a surge in something else--

paranormal activity.

Well, there were a bunch of wars that were fought over it, right?

And doesn't Spain still want it back from England today?

Yes, and yes.

Look, there's arguably no smaller strip of land that has

been as fiercely fought over as Gibraltar.

And those thousand-plus years of violence have reportedly led

to unexplainable activity, not just around,

but inside the Rock.

Towering 1,400 feet above sea level, the Rock of Gibraltar

has cast a shadow over the mouth of the Mediterranean Sea

since mankind first set sail.

This looming limestone mountain sits on a peninsula on

the southern coast of Spain.

It overlooks the Strait of Gibraltar,

the eight-mile-wide stretch of water

separating Europe from Africa.

It's said whoever holds the Rock controls the gateway

to the Mediterranean.

The first documented battle for Gibraltar comes in 1309,

when the Spanish Army defeats the Moorish forces

that had held the Rock for the preceding 600 years.

The vicious battle claims hundreds of lives.

- [screaming] - [weapons clanging]

Over the next 400 years, Gibraltar changes hands

many times and much more blood is spilt.

Ultimately, a staggering 100,000 people will die at

the Rock in a succession of sieges.

[cannon blasts]

And those who don't die trying to claim the Rock

often end up with an even worse fate.

They're jailed in the Moorish Castle

on the northwest side of Gibraltar,

a brutal prison specializing in torture and executions.

In 1713, Gibraltar is conquered for the last time

when Britain captures it from Spain.

To defend it from future invaders, the British begin

digging tunnels into the rock itself, transforming it from

a mountain into a fortress.

These defenses are heavily tested

during the Great Siege of 1779.

[indistinct command]

[Josh] For nearly four years, the British army

repels wave after wave of Spanish and French troops.

Over half a million cannonballs are fired at the Rock.

But the British hold firm.

A thousand soldiers and civilians suffer within

the mountain's labyrinth during the brutal war.

[anguished screaming]

From the end of that siege to the present day,

Gibraltar has had a notorious reputation

for being extremely haunted,

with accounts of locals seeing shadow figures

dating from the 18th century.

Today, the city of Gibraltar has 30,000 residents.

Many have reported seeing strange lights and hearing

impossible voices emanating from deep inside the Rock.

They also speak of a pair of persistent apparitions.

One appears to be a legless man.

The other looks like a robed figure,

referred to as the "Mad Monk."

The motto of Gibraltar's military is,

"No enemy shall expel us."

But does that apply to both the living and the dead?

Look, the activity of Gibraltar is fascinating,

not only because of all of the deaths,

but the rock itself is made from limestone,

and some people think

that limestone can record traumatic events.

It's called the Stone Tape theory.

OK, so Heather thinks the Rock

is a giant VHS cassette. What do you think?

You know, I do know one thing about Gibraltar,

and I'm beginning to wonder if that one thing could

explain everything. Monkeys.

Monkeys!

Gibraltar is home to Europe's only wild population

of monkeys, specifically the Barbary macaque.

And they're apparently everywhere--

in the town, on the mountains.

And think about what those witnesses describe...

strange sounds, dark shapes.

I'm beginning to wonder if maybe it could all just be...

Your mission is to get to Gibraltar and investigate these

disturbing reports in and around the site.

The journey to Gibraltar starts with a six-hour flight to London

before a three-hour hop down to the small British territory

on the southern Spanish coast.

- Ready to go up? - Oh, you better believe it.

[Josh] A scenic cable car ride then takes Heather and Phil to

the top of the Rock. - Hello, Gibraltar!

[intrepid music playing]

- Is that what I think it is? - Africa!

Yes! Right across the water.

Oh, we are really high up right now.

There to greet us at the top of the Rock are Gibraltar's most

famous locals, the Barbary macaques.

Oh, my goodness! I see my first monkey!

Native to the mountains of North Africa, these monkeys

were likely brought here during the Moorish period more than

800 years ago, and they never left.

Beautiful-- here you are!

[monkey chittering]

Oh, he's about to go through your backpack.

- No. - He's going through your backpack.

- Is he? - Yeah, he's trying to open it up.

- Do they know how to do zippers? - Yeah, yeah.

No, he's opening up your little flap right there.

- Tell him not to. - What do you want me to do?

That was amazing!

All right, let's go meet our guy.

Kevan Sercombe has lived in Gibraltar all his life.

For years, he's been coming here to personally map out

the Rock's unsettling limestone labyrinth,

one tunnel at a time.

Kevan, tell us about these tunnels.

What is going on inside this Rock?

From the very top to the sea level,

it's all been carved hollow, basically.

There's about 35 miles of tunnel that we know of,

and they all are connected one to another.

They actually made the city inside the Rock.

- [Heather] Oh, wow. - [Kevan] You've got a generator room.

You've got hospitals,

and they've actually installed an aircraft inside.

Not all of it is accessible to the public because some of

the areas are still used for military purposes.

- Even today? - Even today.

[Phil] How many soldiers could fit inside this rock?

It originally catered for 16,000 during World War II.

- 16,000? - 16,000 soldiers.

[Phil] Wow.

I assume there was a lot of death?

[Kevan] There was thousands of soldiers and civilians killed

during these sieges, yes.

So we understand that you've had

some incredible paranormal experiences

inside these tunnels?

Absolutely.

A group of friends, we went into

the generator room,

we heard a sound, and we saw this figure go by.

It looked like a monk wearing a cloak.

[low muttering]

So there's a local ghost story

about this Mad Monk, and you think you saw it?

I'm quite sure I saw it, to be honest.

It's a very dense black figure, hooded, walking slowly across.

Have you ever seen anything else?

There's another energy which is also talked about,

and it's the legless apparition.

It's like an energy of a man with no legs,

and it sort of hovers around near the hospital.

Wow-- so do you think he died in the hospital,

or who do we think this legless apparition is?

We don't know, but it could be a miner who was killed when

the tunnel caved in and he died suddenly.

[Heather] Oh, wow.

[Kevan] So nobody really knows for sure,

but he's been seen by several people.

I have to ask about monkeys.

I'm seeing them around, the things you're describing.

Could it just be that there's some monkeys in the tunnel?

That's what people are experiencing?

That's a good question.

But monkeys keep out of all tunnels.

I think they've had their own share of experiences.

So even the monkeys are sensitive

to this paranormal energy that's inside these tunnels?

[Phil] We leave Kevan cliffside, grab our gear, and make our way

into the underworld of the Rock of Gibraltar.

Into the tunnels we go.

Our first stop is the generator room,

which hasn't powered anything since World War II,

but according to Kevan,

may be buzzing with another kind of energy.

The amount of effort it must have taken

to carve out all of these tunnels.

The generator room should be down that way.

[eerie music playing]

This is a huge room.

[Phil] Wow.

It just keeps going.

[indistinct whispering]

[Phil] Shh, listen, listen.

Hello?

[indistinct whispering]

Again.

[indistinct whispering]

- Sounds like voices. - Like murmuring.

Hello?

[Phil] Hello!

This is where Kevan saw that Mad Monk.

OK, well...

it could be a mad monkey.

So when I get out the FLIR, make sure there's nothing else

running around back here.

What is going on in here?

- [Heather] You see anything? - [Phil] No, nothing so far.

[Heather] Are you the Mad Monk?

[heavy exhale]

What the [bleep] was that? Was that you?

What?

- Did you hear that? - No.

It was like a-- like a... [heavy exhale]

[Josh] Nothing is coming up on the FLIR.

[Heather] I want to set up something to keep an eye out

for any visual anomalies in this room. - [Phil] OK.

[Heather] Since witnesses reported seeing the apparition of

the Mad Monk here,

I decide to set up a video camera

and a scrolling laser plane,

which can help reveal potential shadow figures.

[Heather] I also place a digital recorder to capture

the strange sounds we've been hearing.

One, two, three. Lights.

- [Phil] Nice. - [Heather] Awesome.

[Phil] Looks good.

So if anything walks across this plane,

we'll have a recording of it and we'll see it.

I think, at this point, we should probably split up

because there are literally miles and miles of tunnel

to investigate. Stay on walkie.

[Phil] While Heather heads off in search of the former hospital

and its supposed legless apparition, I'm on the hunt for

any natural causes that could explain the paranormal claims

inside the Rock, like sudden drafts, strange echoes,

or maybe even monkeys.

Wow!

Big wind gusts coming through here.

- Oh! - [wind whistling]

I think it opens up to the outside.

Phew.

Whoo!

Look at that! Wow.

The city right outside.

Oh, my god, and there's a nest. Must be for one of the gulls.

Nature reclaiming this spot a little bit.

Something like this was built

for this, this giant searchlight that would light up the sky,

light up the sea to look for enemies approaching the Rock.

And it's causing a heck of a lot of wind,

which could explain a lot.

[Heather] Think this is it.

This is a operating room.

And this would have been the pathway.

Everyone would have been walking right here.

[Heather] It sounded like someone in agony.

I imagine...

operating table would have been somewhere right about here.

I take that wailing as a sign that this is a good spot

to set up my gear for a call and response session.

I lay down an EMF trip wire.

You can touch it. You can get close to it,

and it'll change different colors.

And take out my XLS camera.

I'm here to understand what's going on.

I've got an audio recorder.

You can say anything you want on there.

Can you make any of these objects go off?

The wind velocity here, this is the highest

I've detected throughout the tunnels.

This, I gotta measure.

This is an anemometer.

It's essentially a mobile weather station.

And it's detecting everything from temperature

to humidity to wind speed,

which is something that's really interesting to me.

And it's bluetooth connected to my phone,

so I could start the recording.

I think right now we're measuring at 15 miles per hour.

That is definitely the fastest wind I've detected.

So this is gonna take measurements all night.

To someone who's walking through here

maybe a little bit afraid,

they may interpret what they observe as a ghost story.

But when you look at the data, it may show that, in fact,

that apparition they saw was nothing more than a cloud

coming in from the side of a cliff, entering the tunnels,

and then flying through at 15 miles per hour

past their flashlight.

Could look like an apparition, but really...

it's just water vapor and wind.

Now, we gotta find that cave-in site.

I've never seen anything like that before.

In paranormal research, some say orbs indicate

the presence of spiritual energy not fully formed,

and these can be detected by the XLS camera.

Seeing a parade of orbs like this could suggest

multiple spirits are trying to manifest.

Kevan saw a legless apparition.

a tunnel collapsed...

...killing a British miner, Kevan believes, could be

the legless apparition he saw in the abandoned hospital.

Having no luck at the hospital, I'm hoping to communicate with

that spirit at the site of the actual cave-in,

if we can find it.

- Whoa. - [Phil] Look, water!

[Heather] Oh, my goodness

[Phil] Look at that!

[Heather] That water is super clear.

[Phil] This must filter through the entire rock,

through the limestone down here.

- [loud bang] - [Heather gasps] Oh, my god.

[Phil] Sound like it came from up there.

Goes back pretty far.

Look, we've been chasing noises all night.

- We gotta get up there. - OK.

Maybe it started further up.

It's pretty narrow up here.

Looks like it opens up up here, Heather.

- [Phil] See that? - [Heather] It's a tunnel.

[Phil] Excavated tunnel, which intersects with this cave.

So you think this is the spot where that miner was completely

dismembered and killed? - Could be the spot.

[Heather] This is a great place to get answers.

I've got the geophone with me, so...

I can use this,

place it into the rock, and listen for these sounds

that are emanating from the earth around us.

OK, this is Heather and Phil.

We are where we believe the cave-in occurred,

starting our AVP session.

Is this where a cave-in happened?

Heather, I'm getting this murmuring.

I swear, it almost sounds like a heartbeat.

Are you the legless entity that people have seen

in these tunnels? Is this where you died?

The way I see it, this is a sign of activity.

Ghosts drain batteries as a source of power

so that they can communicate.

With our gear batteries dying,

we can't collect more evidence tonight,

so we start heading back to the surface.

The next day, intrigued by the castle response,

Phil and I split up to gather more intel

on the historic Moorish castle,

which for centuries was a place of torture and torment.

I'm meeting with a local historian, Clive Finlayson,

who is the director of the Gibraltar National Museum

and an expert on the Moorish Castle's dark and disturbing history.

There are so many miles of tunnels

in the Rock of Gibraltar.

Do they connect to the Moorish Castle at all?

[Clive] Yeah, everything is interconnected.

The Moorish Castle has had many, many functions over

the years, but the thread that links all these throughout is

it was a place of suffering and in many cases, cruelty.

What types of cruelty?

[Clive] Some of the women were kept in black holes.

[woman] Let me out!

Deserters, people trying to escape, would be hanged.

And what they would do is

they would hang them in the gallows inside the prison.

And then from there, you take them to a lime pit.

Oh, Lord!

So you put the body in the lime, and the lime would

burn or eat away all the flesh.

[pained screaming]

And what they would then do is crush the bones,

put them in a leather container,

and put them in the wall of the castle.

[Heather] Wait a second.

Are there remains still in the walls?

- Oh, yes. - Can you see them?

You see the little plaques on the walls which mark

where they are. They're just behind there.

So, if we're trying to understand

the full picture of Gibraltar,

it seems like we have to go to the Moorish Castle.

I would say it's essential.

[Phil] While Heather meets with a historian,

I'm heading straight to the Moorish Castle,

which is currently being restored,

to speak with a witness

about mysterious activity he's seen there.

Douglas Attard was a night watchman here for decades

before the modern version of the prison

finally closed in 2010.

What was it like working here?

This prisoner was hearing someone below

him trying to get out. - Oh yeah, yep.

[man moaning]

Are you the only one who's had experiences like this here?

[Phil] So what did your nephew do?

- He quit? - Yeah.

They were doing construction.

What are the chances someone else could have walked through

while he was working?

How does it feel being back here after all these years?

[Heather] Just after sundown, I rendezvous with Phil at

the Moorish Castle.

Now that I know it's linked with the tunnels inside

the Rock of Gibraltar, I'm eager to figure out what

sort of paranormal connections the two sites might share.

[Phil] All right Heather, so, these are the isolation cells.

This is where the worst-of-the-worst prisoners were kept.

[man screaming]

[Heather] I'm wondering if what people are calling the Mad Monk that

they've seen in the tunnels is actually a hooded executioner.

Because how many executions took place

in the Moorish Castle?

- [Phil] Like, probably hundreds, thousands. - [Heather] Right.

And not only that, look at all these signs of renovation.

This is gonna make them angry, because you're disturbing

their resting place. We need to be careful.

- OK. - So where are the gallows?

The gallows are right underneath the scaffolding,

that side of the wall.

All right, I'll find my way there.

- Stay safe. - You got it.

This is where hundreds of people were hanged

in this exact spot.

This is a great place to start our investigation.

This is an illumination case. It is not touch-sensitive.

The lights will not go off from touch.

It uses IR sensors.

So if anything is moving around here,

even something we can't see, those lights will go off.

And it's set up in the exact spot where the gallows was.

told us reports of hearing unusual, unexplainable sounds.

we heard some unusual things.

So I'm hoping I can not only identify what the sound is,

but where that sound is coming from and maybe track it down.

Some of them have been singular pings,

others kind of in a grouping.

Clearly there's a lot of spirits in this place.

These are the walls that are actually packed with

the remains of prisoners.

What I'm looking at right now is a graveyard.

To think of them just throwing decomposing bodies into this

and then to be shoved into the walls.

It's coming from behind you.

[Heather] I'm gonna take out my K2 meter,

see if I can get any readings.

So is K2 is what a EMF detector-- oh!

[Phil] It's going off right in this area.

I've not seen anything that looks electrical running

through here. Zero modern technology.

Oh, my god. There's a room down there.

Reports of ghosts have always been

at the very heart of Gibraltar's history.

But shockingly, some of those ghosts

might have had hearts too.

During World War II, the British Navy initiated

a top-secret plan to turn a handful of brave soldiers

into living ghosts hiding within the Rock itself.

Fearing Germany would seize Gibraltar,

the Brits commissioned a hidden underground tunnel complex that

would see six men secretly sealed in the Rock for up to

seven years, spying on the Germans from within.

Who helped come up with this audacious plan?

Ian Fleming, who would go on to create

legendary spy, James Bond.

Luckily, those six courageous souls

did not become living ghosts, as the Germans never invaded.

But it wasn't all for nothing.

The plans at least seemingly inspired the lairs

of various Bond villains.

This is Heather and Phil, deep underneath the prison in

the Moorish Castle. Is there anyone here with us?

Is the executioner with us?

[Phil] The tunnels are connected to the castle.

So potentially that could be coming from...

- Anywhere. - ...anywhere.

- Why don't we walk a little bit. - Yeah.

[Josh] Heather and Phil continued to search for the sound

they heard, moving deeper and deeper down tunnels that

took them back under the Rock of Gibraltar.

They never found the source, but it was as if whatever

they heard was leading them back

into the mountain's dark heart.

During their unprecedented expedition inside the Rock,

the team investigated many of its strange secrets.

[Josh] The phantom breath Heather heard

in the generator room was analyzed.

It can only be detected on Heather's microphone.

have been literally breathing down her neck?

that put the team on edge.

the thousands of lives lost here,

[Josh] And the name Heather identified in

her call-and-response led to a shocking connection.

Lieutenant Colonel Lawrence Bolton

was a British officer who died in the 1941 cave-in.

Is this proof that he is the legless apparition

frequently witnessed, forever trapped in

the mountain's endless tunnels?

was confirmed as primate, suggesting at least some of

the Rock's strange encounters

really are just plain old monkey business.

But there was one more piece of remarkable evidence,

and it concerns the Rock's most infamous ghost, the Mad Monk.

Heather now believes she's uncovered his true identity--

a hooded executioner who once ended lives

at the Moorish Castle.

Are you the executioner? Oh [bleep], it's going off!

It's going off like crazy.

[Josh] Potential proof of the Mad Monk would come

weeks later as Heather analyzed our footage.

Reviewing the camera left behind in the Generator Room,

where the monk is often reported, Heather found this--

For just a moment, you can clearly see a tall

and dark figure passing through our laser plane.

He appears as if his head is bowed in prayer.

But then again, perhaps he's contemplating

something more unholy.

Gibraltar's vast, looming rock has been brutally battled over

for a thousand years.

My team left Gibraltar feeling that the battle continues today

between the living...
