city inside.

to control it.

This is where hundreds of
people were hanged

in this exact spot.

in its labyrinth of tunnels.

But no, I'm talking about
the Rock of Gibraltar.

That's the place that's in
Spain, but it's British.

That's the one.
Very confusing, I know.

It is a British territory
surrounded by Spain.

It is known as the gateway to
the Mediterranean,

and it has been a center of
trade for millennia.

But recently, there has been
a surge in something else--

paranormal activity.

Well, there were a bunch of wars
that were fought over it, right?

And doesn't Spain still want it
back from England today?

Yes, and yes.

Look, there's arguably no
smaller strip of land that has

been as fiercely fought over
as Gibraltar.

And those thousand-plus years
of violence have reportedly led

to unexplainable activity,
not just around,

but inside the Rock.

Towering 1,400 feet above sea
level, the Rock of Gibraltar

has cast a shadow over the mouth
of the Mediterranean Sea

since mankind first set sail.

This looming limestone mountain
sits on a peninsula on

the southern coast of Spain.

It overlooks
the Strait of Gibraltar,

the eight-mile-wide
stretch of water

separating Europe
from Africa.

It's said whoever holds
the Rock controls the gateway

to the Mediterranean.

The first documented battle for
Gibraltar comes in 1309,

when the Spanish Army
defeats the Moorish forces

that had held the Rock for
the preceding 600 years.

The vicious battle claims
hundreds of lives.

- [screaming]
- [weapons clanging]

Over the next 400 years,
Gibraltar changes hands

many times
and much more blood is spilt.

Ultimately, a staggering
100,000 people will die at

the Rock in a succession
of sieges.

[cannon blasts]

And those who don't die trying
to claim the Rock

often end up
with an even worse fate.

They're jailed
in the Moorish Castle

on the northwest side
of Gibraltar,

a brutal prison specializing
in torture and executions.

In 1713, Gibraltar is conquered
for the last time

when Britain
captures it from Spain.

To defend it from future
invaders, the British begin

digging tunnels into the rock
itself, transforming it from

a mountain into a fortress.

These defenses
are heavily tested

during the Great Siege
of 1779.

[indistinct command]

[Josh] For nearly four years,
the British army

repels wave after wave
of Spanish and French troops.

Over half a million cannonballs
are fired at the Rock.

But the British hold firm.

A thousand soldiers
and civilians suffer within

the mountain's labyrinth during
the brutal war.

[anguished screaming]

From the end of that siege
to the present day,

Gibraltar has had
a notorious reputation

for being extremely haunted,

with accounts of locals
seeing shadow figures

dating from the 18th century.

Today, the city of Gibraltar
has 30,000 residents.

Many have reported seeing
strange lights and hearing

impossible voices emanating
from deep inside the Rock.

They also speak of a pair of
persistent apparitions.

One appears to be
a legless man.

The other looks like
a robed figure,

referred to
as the "Mad Monk."

The motto
of Gibraltar's military is,

"No enemy shall expel us."

But does that apply to both
the living and the dead?

is fascinating,

not only because of all
of the deaths,

but the rock itself is made
from limestone,

and some people think

that limestone can record
traumatic events.

and I'm beginning to wonder if
that one thing could

The journey to Gibraltar starts
with a six-hour flight to London

before a three-hour hop down
to the small British territory

on the southern
Spanish coast.

A scenic cable car ride then
takes Heather and Phil to

the top of the Rock.
- Hello, Gibraltar!

Yes!
Right across the water.

Oh, we are really high up
right now.

There to greet us at the top of
the Rock are Gibraltar's most

famous locals,
the Barbary macaques.

Oh, my goodness!
I see my first monkey!

Native to the mountains of
North Africa, these monkeys

were likely brought here during
the Moorish period more than

800 years ago,
and they never left.

Beautiful--

Kevan Sercombe has lived in
Gibraltar all his life.

For years, he's been coming
here to personally map out

the Rock's unsettling
limestone labyrinth,

one tunnel at a time.

Kevan, tell us about
these tunnels.

What is going on inside
this Rock?

From the very top
to the sea level,

it's all been carved
hollow, basically.

There's about 35 miles of
tunnel that we know of,

and they all are connected
one to another.

They actually made the city
inside the Rock.

- [Heather] Oh, wow.
- [Kevan] You've got
a generator room.

You've got hospitals,

and they've actually installed
an aircraft inside.

Not all of it is accessible to
the public because some of

the areas are still used for
military purposes.

- Even today?
- Even today.

[Phil] How many soldiers
could fit inside this rock?

It originally catered for
16,000 during World War II.

- 16,000?
- 16,000 soldiers.

[Phil] Wow.

I assume there was a lot
of death?

[Kevan] There was thousands of
soldiers and civilians killed

during these sieges, yes.

So we understand
that you've had

some incredible
paranormal experiences

inside these tunnels?

Absolutely.

A group of friends,
we went into

the generator room,

we heard a sound, and we saw
this figure go by.

It looked like a monk
wearing a cloak.

So there's a local ghost story

about this Mad Monk,
and you think you saw it?

I'm quite sure I saw it,
to be honest.

It's a very dense black figure,
hooded, walking slowly across.

Have you ever seen
anything else?

There's another energy which
is also talked about,

and it's
the legless apparition.

It's like an energy
of a man with no legs,

and it sort of hovers
around near the hospital.

Wow-- so do you think
he died in the hospital,

or who do we think
this legless apparition is?

We don't know, but it could be
a miner who was killed when

the tunnel caved in
and he died suddenly.

really knows for sure,

but he's been seen
by several people.

I have to ask about monkeys.

I'm seeing them around,
the things you're describing.

Could it just be that there's
some monkeys in the tunnel?

But monkeys keep out of
all tunnels.

I think they've had their own
share of experiences.

are sensitive

to this paranormal energy

with another kind of energy.

The amount of effort
it must have taken

to carve out all of
these tunnels.

The generator room should be

It just keeps going.

that Mad Monk.

something to keep an eye out

for any visual anomalies

Since witnesses reported
seeing the apparition of

the Mad Monk here,

I decide to set up
a video camera

and a scrolling laser plane,

which can help reveal
potential shadow figures.

any natural causes that could
explain the paranormal claims

inside the Rock, like sudden
drafts, strange echoes,

I take that wailing as a sign
that this is a good spot

to set up my gear for a call
and response session.

I've detected
throughout the tunnels.

This, I gotta measure.

This is an anemometer.

It's essentially a mobile
weather station.

And it's detecting everything
from temperature

to humidity to wind speed,

which is something
that's really interesting to me.

And it's bluetooth connected
to my phone,

so I could start the recording.

I think right now we're
measuring at 15 miles per hour.

That is definitely the fastest
wind I've detected.

So this is gonna take
measurements all night.

To someone who's walking
through here

maybe a little bit afraid,

they may interpret what
they observe as a ghost story.

But when you look at the data,
it may show that, in fact,

that apparition they saw was
nothing more than a cloud

coming in from the side of
a cliff, entering the tunnels,

and then flying through
at 15 miles per hour

past their flashlight.

Could look like
an apparition, but really...

it's just water vapor and wind.

Now, we gotta find
that cave-in site.

that are emanating from
the earth around us.

The next day, intrigued by
the castle response,

Phil and I split up
to gather more intel

on the historic Moorish castle,

which for centuries was a place
of torture and torment.

I'm meeting with a local
historian, Clive Finlayson,

who is the director of
the Gibraltar National Museum

and an expert on
the Moorish Castle's dark
and disturbing history.

There are so many
miles of tunnels

in the Rock of Gibraltar.

Do they connect
to the Moorish Castle at all?

[Clive] Yeah, everything
is interconnected.

The Moorish Castle has had
many, many functions over

the years, but the thread that
links all these throughout is

it was a place of suffering
and in many cases, cruelty.

What types of cruelty?

[Clive] Some of the women
were kept in black holes.

[woman] Let me out!

Deserters, people trying to
escape, would be hanged.

And what they would do is

they would hang them in
the gallows inside the prison.

And then from there,
you take them to a lime pit.

Oh, Lord!

So you put the body in
the lime, and the lime would

burn or eat away
all the flesh.

[pained screaming]

And what they would then do
is crush the bones,

put them in a leather container,

and put them in the wall
of the castle.

[Heather] Wait a second.

Are there remains still
in the walls?

- Oh, yes.
- Can you see them?

You see the little plaques on
the walls which mark

where they are.
They're just behind there.

So, if we're trying
to understand

the full picture of Gibraltar,

it seems like we have to go to
the Moorish Castle.

I would say it's essential.

[Phil] While Heather meets
with a historian,

I'm heading straight
to the Moorish Castle,

which is currently
being restored,

to speak with a witness

about mysterious activity
he's seen there.

Douglas Attard was a night
watchman here for decades

before the modern version
of the prison

finally closed in 2010.

What was it like working here?

This prisoner was hearing
someone below

him trying to get out.
- Oh yeah, yep.

experiences like this here?

So what did your nephew do?

They were doing construction.

the Moorish Castle.

Now that I know it's linked
with the tunnels inside

the Rock of Gibraltar,
I'm eager to figure out what

sort of paranormal connections
the two sites might share.

these are the isolation cells.

This is where
the worst-of-the-worst
prisoners were kept.

I'm wondering if what people
are calling the Mad Monk that

they've seen in the tunnels is
actually a hooded executioner.

Because how many
executions took place

in the Moorish Castle?

- [Phil] Like, probably
hundreds, thousands.

And not only that, look at all
these signs of renovation.

This is gonna make them angry,
because you're disturbing

their resting place.
We need to be careful.

The gallows are right
underneath the scaffolding,

But shockingly,
some of those ghosts

During World War II,
the British Navy initiated

a top-secret plan to turn
a handful of brave soldiers

into living ghosts
hiding within the Rock itself.

Fearing Germany would
seize Gibraltar,

the Brits commissioned a hidden
underground tunnel complex that

would see six men secretly
sealed in the Rock for up to

seven years, spying on
the Germans from within.

Who helped come up
with this audacious plan?

Ian Fleming,
who would go on to create

legendary spy, James Bond.

Luckily, those six
courageous souls

did not become living ghosts,
as the Germans never invaded.

But it wasn't all for nothing.

The plans at least seemingly
inspired the lairs

of various Bond villains.
