hauntings-- the case of "The Conjuring."

We discover the shocking true story that inspired

and everyone in that house thought

they had just seen my mother die.

Yes. Terrifying.

When that demon jumps off the closet,

that gave me nightmares.

But it's based off of a true story.

The case files from Ed and Lorraine Warren.

That's right, acclaimed paranormal investigators,

the Warrens, helped the Perron family,

who believed that they were being attacked

by a demonic spirit at their home

in Rhode Island in the 1970s. And here's the kicker.

Apparently, it's still happening today.

Please tell me we're not talking demons

jumping off closets.

Well, we kind of are, actually.

There's a family who lives on the property now called

the Boylans, and they claim that they are dealing with

the exact same kind of paranormal activity

that afflicted the Perrons 50 years ago.

And since the Warrens are sadly no longer with us,

they've turned to "Expedition X" for help.

- [ominous chord strike] - [camera shutter snaps]

1971.

In the sleepy, rural town of Harrisville, Rhode Island,

the Perron family moves into the historic Arnold farmhouse.

Roger and Carolyn, plus their five daughters

expect a quiet life.

What they get instead is one of the most haunted houses

in America.

Within a week, the family begins experiencing

unexplainable horror.

Objects moving on their own, hearing the impossible sound

of crying-- and even seeing disturbing apparitions.

And much worse is to come.

Carolyn soon becomes the target of physical attacks

by what the family comes to believe

is a malevolent entity.

She frequently wakes up covered in inexplicable bruises.

And in one terrifying incident, a hay knife flies off the wall

of their barn, slicing her neck and nearly decapitating her.

In 1973, the overwhelmed parents

call in the pioneers of paranormal investigation,

Ed and Lorraine Warren, for help.

Even with 20 years of casework already under their belts,

nothing could prepare them for what they encounter

at the farmhouse.

The Warrens confirm the family's frightening claims

and decide to conduct a seance.

They want to contact and purge the demonic entity

that they're now certain is plaguing Carolyn.

But according to multiple accounts,

the ritual quickly explodes

into a violent battle between good and evil.

The Perrons' 200-pound kitchen table levitates on its own

moments before Carolyn is hurled across the room

by a powerful, invisible force.

These shocking events are the basis

for the hit film, "The Conjuring."

right next door to the Perrons' former home.

and Patrick even claims he survived an attack

The Boylans' stories are clearly very unsettling.

But, I mean, think about where they are.

If you lived in the shadow of the "Conjuring" home,

wouldn't you also be prone to seeing spirits?

Yeah, I really loved "Poltergeist."

- "Poltergeist"? - But I was not scared of it.

I thought it was so cool that Carol Anne got to communicate

with ghosts. And we had the same haircut.

I don't think that was the point of that movie,

to make you want to be that little girl.

Well, look at me now. I got sucked into TV.

- [laughing] - Yes, you did.

Wait. Is that what I think it is?

[Phil] Is that the original "Conjuring" house?

[Heather] Yes.

[Phil] And there's the Boylan House.

They're literally right next door to each other.

That is crazy.

Let's see what this family has a say.

Patrick Boylan, his wife Sherry,

and their teenage sons Kyler and Hunter have lived

in this house for decades.

Sherry's been here since the late 1970s,

just a few years after the infamous events

of "The Conjuring."

- So you're born and raised here? - [Sherry] Yes.

I raised these two in this house.

- It's a pretty interesting childhood. - Yeah.

[Phil] You're living next door to one of the most famous

haunted houses in the world,

and your house itself seems

to have a lot going on. - It's terrifying.

It's kind of just something, like, that we live with

at this point. - Have all of you had

strange experiences in this house?

- Yeah. - Absolutely, yes.

[Heather] What sort of activity are y'all experiencing?

[Patrick] Shadow figures.

- Noises. - [growling]

Sometimes, even whispering.

Things moving or getting thrown.

So where are y'all having experiences around the house?

I hear footsteps all the time up in the attic,

which is now my bedroom.

There's a crawl space, and you'll just hear footsteps

at least two or three times a day.

- [Heather] Hmm. - [footsteps echo]

Have you ever looked in there?

- I've opened the doors to it, but-- - Ever crawled in?

I'm never gonna go in there.

[creaking]

[Heather] Where else have you had activity in the house?

The basement.

I spend 12 hours a day down there in my guitar repair shop.

At least once a day, something happens.

- I was pushed down the stairs... - [screams]

...on more than one occasion. It was pretty terrifying.

- Yes. - Wow.

[Sherry] In the dining room, the table,

you can hear it moving.

[heavy thud]

One of the craziest, probably, most terrifying things

that's happened since I've been here took place in the bedroom.

Middle of the night, 3:00, this woman came to me

over the bed. She was floating two feet

in front of my face. She was trying to grab me.

I knew it wasn't a dream because I woke up

with human bite marks.

Has anyone else had any sort of violent attack?

I was working on the computer on his side of the bed,

and then I felt like a burning sensation,

and I had a scratch on my neck.

- That's the same spot that you were? - Yes.

Did these happen near the same time?

I would say within a week apart?

Yes.

Do you have any physical evidence?

Do you have any recordings, any photos, any videos?

I took photos of our bedroom before and after

I painted the walls.

And on the mirror, you could clearly see

it looked like a face. Actually, I have it here.

[Heather] Oh, yeah. Wow.

I mean, that looks like a face.

Do you have any ideas on who could be haunting

this house?

It could potentially have something to do with next door.

[Heather] The "Conjuring" house.

So, what is the connection between this house

and the "Conjuring" house?

Well, at one point, it was an Arnold Farm.

There was about 200 acres here.

So this foundation to this house,

there was a section where it's all stone.

[Phil] So the foundation of the house is older than the house itself.

- Yes. - It may date back to the Arnold farmhouse.

[Patrick] Yes.

That would be my only explanation

for anything that happens here.

Has anyone had any experiences in the land

in between the houses? - We hear children laughing...

[child laughing]

...behind the houses, towards the water in the woods.

If you truly believe all of this is happening,

why do you stay here? - This is where I grew up,

and I just feel attached to this place.

I don't want to move.

I feel the opposite, actually.

There's times I just want to move away, just to get away,

start over kind of thing.

But I can't.

I mean, I can't obviously leave everyone.

We're kind of at a loss. Like, we don't know...

actually, what to do at this point.

Like, things have just been escalating.

I'm at my wit's end.

[Heather] The Boylans turned their home over to us

for the next 48 hours, desperate for us to find out

exactly what's happening on their property.

First, we set up surveillance cameras in all the rooms

where the family reported paranormal activity.

The main bedroom, where Patrick was bitten

and Sherry was violently scratched.

- How's it looking? - Looks great.

[Heather] The attic, where Kyler hears footsteps in the crawl space.

Tilt up a little bit.

The dining room, where the table apparently

moves on its own.

and the basement,

where Patrick claims he was shoved down the stairs.

How's that look?

[Phil] Perfect.

[Heather] And it's not just surveillance cameras.

I wanna try the same tools the Warrens used

in their ghost hunting, back in the days of "The Conjuring."

We use cameras a lot in our investigations,

but this is old-school.

This is something that the Warrens would have used

to document their investigations.

And we'll see if something interesting shows up.

What else you got? Oh, VHS camcorder?

- I bet your dad had one of those. - [Phil] Oh, yeah.

[Phil] So, here we can get a little haunted home video.

[Heather] Well, here's my thought.

A lot of paranormal technology is tracking changes in EMF.

So a VHS recorder works by printing images

on magnetic tape. It's like a visual EVP.

- I think it's worth a shot. - Guess we'll find out.

[Phil] Our plan is to start the night in the attic,

which is also Kyler's bedroom, in search of a source

for the footsteps he hears.

Over there's the crawl space Kyler said he will not go into.

- [Heather] Exactly. - [Phil, normally] Watch your step over here.

[whispering] For all we know, there could be some animal living in here.

That could explain all the footsteps

and all the movement.

I'm seeing some rodent scat,

but nothing big enough to sound like footsteps.

Oh, there's a dead animal in the corner.

This is it, where they both were physically attacked.

And this is the mirror where that face showed up.

I'm telling you, Heather, it was as if there was

a flash response to mine.

This must be his workstation.

Everywhere you look, there's wires hanging.

So, maybe...

something just short-circuited.

Doesn't explain the door shutting,

and doesn't explain the footsteps.

the old foundation.

with the "Conjuring" house,

with that Arnold farmhouse property.

I just heard a knock.

I feel a cold breeze coming through.

I think this goes outside.

This was locked from the inside.

[Heather] I saw the door close in.

Heather, this takes us outside, straight out back.

And that's right after I heard the knock on the door.

I think we need to dig more into the actual history

of this building and the "Conjuring" house.

While we're at it, let's get these photos developed ASAP.

[Heather] The next day, we have a crew member stay behind

at the Boylan house to monitor their surveillance feeds,

while Phil and I split up to find out more about

this mysterious property.

I'm meeting with Andrea Perron, the eldest daughter

of the Perron family, who spent her teenage years

living in the horrifying "Conjuring" house.

I really want to understand what you went through.

- So do I. - Take me back to the '70s.

Take me back to when y'all moved in to the house.

I mean, the day we moved in, the day we moved in,

I walked into the house, took a hard right into

the dining room-- and there was a man standing in the corner.

And he was dressed oddly, and I figured it had to

have been a neighbor or something.

He looked like a middle-aged man.

He appeared to me as solid as you, and he looked

right through me. - So, literally,

from the first moment you stepped into that house,

you saw a spirit.

Yes, and the energy, around that property is

off the charts. So terrifying.

Did y'all experience any violent activity

before the Warrens got there? - Yes.

There were several incidents that could have claimed lives.

The first time my mother was attacked was about maybe

two weeks after we had moved in.

I want to show you something. Don't be afraid.

[Heather] OK.

- This is a hand scythe. - Wow.

It's used for baling hay.

This is the object that almost claimed my mother's life.

[Heather] This exact object?

[Andrea] It was hovering in the barn, spinning, and then crashed down

across her neck, knocked her to the ground.

And then it was this way, and it trembled and trembled

and trembled, and then fell on the floor and went silent.

She didn't know what to make of it.

It blew her mind. It absolutely blew her mind.

And that was the first incident

a threat presented itself.

[Heather] That must have been terrifying.

I can't even tell you, I can't...

[Phil] I've arranged to meet with Tony Spera,

the son-in-law of the Conjuring investigators

Ed and Lorraine Warren.

Tony runs the Warrens' Occult Museum

in Monroe, Connecticut, which houses hundreds

of haunted artifacts

collected from the couple's most extraordinary cases.

All these objects that you see here are the opposite of holy.

They're like the unblessed, the unholy.

There's one object here, though, that's very,

very famous, actually infamous.

This is the Annabelle doll.

It's very dangerous. It's in a glass and wood case.

Crazy because it looks innocent,

but it's not innocent.

It has done some horrible things to people.

[Phil] The real-life Annabelle doll, which supposedly sliced someone

open in the '70s, then caused a priest

to nearly die in a car crash,

sits across from its film prop counterpart.

It's just one of many strange items in the museum.

There's also a summoning mirror that supposedly drove

a New Jersey man insane in the 1980s,

and a satanic worship idol that Tony claims

put Lorraine into a catatonic state

for three days in 1991.

Did Ed and Lorraine ever share details with you

about the "Conjuring" house?

Oh, the "Conjuring" house, yeah, of course.

So, we're here because we're investigating

the house next door. - Mm-hmm.

It is actually part of the original Arnold farmhouse

property, and the family that lives there is terrified,

and they're feeling like they need help.

What do you think Ed and Lorraine

would say about that?

Well, I think they would try to help them if they were here.

I'd say it's probably linked

to the original "Conjuring" house,

if it's the same property, because the demonic

doesn't have any boundaries.

Ed used to call it "the bewitched farmhouse,"

because they were called in by several people to do

an exorcism of the house.

So you can actually do an exorcism of a property?

[Tony] Yes.

Lorraine immediately felt something bad in the house.

She knew there was problems going on in the house.

She felt scared in the house.

So the Warrens show up to the house,

and they, they quickly recognize something is wrong here.

- [Tony] Yes, absolutely, yeah. - What did they do?

What was their solution?

Well, they had a seance in the house, you know.

That was their big mistake.

Tell me what happened the night of the seance.

It was very short.

The Warrens had asked my mother's permission

because Mrs. Warren said that my mother was being oppressed.

Well, what we saw that night was she conjured the spirits.

It was like she threw open wide the doors to the netherworld

and invited everyone in, so that she could determine

who was causing the problem in the house.

My mother...

put her neck down, I mean, she wrapped herself into a ball

to the extent that you would expect to hear bones breaking... - [Heather] Hmm.

...and she started to growl.

And my mom threw her head back

and howled like a banshee, and then started speaking

in a language that does not exist on this planet.

Oh, goodness.

And then her chair started to levitate.

And she was...

It wasn't Mom. It wasn't Mom.

She was being infested.

She was being attacked, and the chair lifted

off the floor, and then, in a split second,

she was thrown in the chair, 20 feet into the parlor,

and her head hit the floor, and everyone in that house

thought they had just seen my mother die.

Including you.

- That's horrific. - It was awful.

I've never seen my father that angry.

He threw everyone out of the house.

Mrs. Warren was shaking. Her whole body was shaking.

The medium was passed out unconscious on the table.

The priest was standing over in the corner of the room shaking.

So they didn't close the ritual?

They never closed the ritual.

It was a very dark energy.

I don't know if the house was cleared.

Maybe it moved right next door.

Maybe it moved right next door.

One of the most fascinating things that happened

when we lived at the farm was when my baby sister, April,

God rest her soul, um

went for a walk in the woods near the creek that comes down

between the houses.

And she came running back to the house, and she's like,

"Mom, Mom, I met so many kids.

There were so many of them."

And my mother, knowing that the property was haunted,

that there was activity all over the property,

immediately sat my little sister down at the table

and said, "Tell me everything."

- So, she heard children's voices? - She saw them.

You know, that is incredible, because the two boys

of the Boylan family have heard children's voices in the woods.

[Andrea] In the woods.

Because they come back to play.

[Heather] Wow.

[Phil] Here we go!

[Heather] I share Andrea's terrifying account with Phil,

and we head straight to the creek that runs

behind both houses, trying to find answers

for the strange sounds heard by both the Perron daughters

and the Boylan boys.

from the first night investigation.

but you're definitely gonna want to check it out.

It's pretty crazy.

So, look, these are the pictures that we got

So, there's attic and crawl space.

According to legendary paranormal investigators

Ed and Lorraine Warren, this doll is pure evil.

Meet Annabelle. The Warrens' case files claim

that in 1970, a woman referred to as Donna

receives a Raggedy Ann doll as a gift.

Donna believes the doll moves around her apartment

on its own.

She goes to a psychic who says it's inhabited by the spirit

of a girl named Annabelle. But then things turn violent.

Donna's friend is allegedly attacked by the doll,

leaving behind seven claw marks.

The Warrens investigate and say Annabelle isn't

possessed by a girl,

but by a demon trying to seize a human soul.

The Warrens lock up Annabelle within

a protective case inside their occult museum,

where it remains to this day.

The story of this demonic doll is the inspiration

for the "Annabelle" film series.

Maybe it's just the stuff of legend,

but also let's keep that case firmly locked, right?

[Heather] For over 400 years, the Catholic Church has

officially practiced exorcisms in cases of suspected

demonic possession.

Phil already learned about the power of such a rite

from Tony. - So you can actually do

an exorcism of a property? - Yes.

[Heather] So we found a priest who specializes in exorcisms

to help us finish what Ed and Lorraine Warren started

in 1973.

So they didn't close the ritual.

They never closed the ritual.

[Heather] Hopefully, with less terrifying results, this time.

Father Bob Bailey has performed dozens of exorcisms

during his 25-year career with the Catholic Church.

We'll do what we can and do battle.

[Phil] Right this way.

[Heather] OK.

[Father Bob] I'll set up a little altar here.

[Phil] Father Bob builds a makeshift altar

at the foot of the bed, including holy water and tokens

of St. Joseph, St. Michael,

and the Virgin Mary.

Most importantly, the priest sets up a relic that

he says is a splinter from the cross that crucified Jesus.

We ask you, Father,

to cleanse this house of all evil presence.

May the army of warrior angels surround us and fight with us

against negative entities inhabiting and infesting

this property and crush

the spiritual enemies.

OK, now we'll go to the individual rooms.

So if you want to join me with holy incense.

We beseech thee, O Lord, this room and drive far from it

all the deadly the power of the enemy will leave now.

[Phil] Father Bob continues the exorcism in the younger son

Hunter's bedroom, where things take a very disturbing turn.

[Father Bob] So, there's something in here.

[speaking in Latin]

- [Father Bob] Whoa. - [Phil] Are you OK?

[Father Bob] Something pushed me back.

[Heather] Oh.

[Father Bob] In the name of Jesus Christ, I command you to leave now.

By my authority.

Oof, there was some kind of a force that just

pulled me right back when I went in that room.

That hasn't happened in years.

[Josh] After that frightening encounter, Father Bob went

through the rest of the house...

[speaking in Latin]

Let your holy angels dwell.

...finishing the sacred exorcism ritual in the Boylans' basement,

where Dad, Patrick, says he was attacked.

I was pushed down the stairs on more than one occasion.

[speaking in Latin]

[Josh] Since Patrick seemed to be the main target

of the evil entity said to be haunting the house,

Father Bob thought it best to bring him back

for a personal blessing.

In the name of Jesus Christ, I command you now to leave him.

- Amen. - [Josh] Based on what we found

while investigating the truth of "The Conjuring,"

it seems the priest's actions were more than justified.

Descending into the basement, Phil and our cameras caught

a mystery flash on the stairs. - [Phil] What the [bleep] was that?

[Josh] A review of our surveillance footage showed no explanation

for the strange and sudden light.

[Phil] What the [bleep] was that?

[Josh] There was unsettling audio evidence, too.

First, there was the shriek they heard in the woods.

[distant shriek]

[Josh] Phil did a comparison analysis with hundreds

of local animal and bird calls.

It turns out this, at least, was not the scream

of a ghostly child, but rather, the call

of an everyday blue jay. - [caws]

[Josh] However, the sounds from inside the house

were not so easily explained.

Analyzing the recording made in Patrick and Sherry's bedroom,

Heather was able to identify over 20 distinct voices. - [spirit box]

More than she'd ever encountered in one session.

- [spirit box] - Many.

[Josh] And there was much more disturbing activity

from this session to be discovered.

In addition to the eerie shadow figure Phil's vintage camera

caught in the mirror...

This really looks like the silhouette of a person.

[Josh]...Heather's camcorder...

Why are you in pain?

...recording from the dresser at the very same time,

caught this.

[whoosh]

For six frames exactly, in the same corner of the room

where Phil also photographed the anomaly, you can see

the distinct shape of a figure.

We confirmed that this could not be a shadow cast by Phil

or any member of the crew.

Whether or not Father Bob's exorcism has put an end

to the curse of "The Conjuring,"

only time and the Boylans will tell.

For now, at least, it seems this brave family has gained

something truly precious, hope.

This is the first night in weeks,

probably I slept through the night.

Wow.

- [Patrick] Yeah. - We can enjoy our home peacefully now.
